Teeing Off Success: Chamber Classic Golf Tournaments

The Longview Chamber of Commerce’s Chamber Classic Golf Tournaments have become the paragon of success, bringing together business professionals, community members, and golf enthusiasts for a unique blend of networking, camaraderie, and friendly competition. This year’s tournaments, both the Fall and Spring Classics, were nothing short of triumphs, setting the stage for an even more spectacular showcase in 2024.

The Fall Classic Extravaganza: In October, the Pinecrest Country Club played host to the Chamber Classic Golf Tournament’s Fall Classic, a day that seamlessly blended business and pleasure against the backdrop of a picturesque golf course. Business professionals from various sectors gathered in a laid-back, casual atmosphere that encouraged networking and relationship-building. In addition, the Tempest Golf Club provided the perfect setting for players to connect with fellow business owners and community members in March at the Spring Classic. The event offered a unique opportunity for participants to leave with more than just a lower score; it was a chance to cultivate sales leads, generate business referrals, and connect with prospective clients. The tournament’s success was not solely attributed to the competitive swings on the course; it was the overall experience that resonated with participants. From the outstanding food to the chance to win great prizes, every aspect of the event was meticulously curated to enhance the sense of community and celebration.

Looking Ahead to 2024: As the sun sets on this year’s Fall Classic, anticipation is already building for the Chamber Classic Golf Tournament’s Spring Classic in 2024. Set to take place at Tempest Golf Club once again, the Spring Classic promises to surpass the successes of its predecessors. With a projected field of over 100 golfers, the Spring Classic is poised to be a grand spectacle of networking and golfing prowess. The Chamber of Commerce is committed to enhancing the tournament experience, ensuring that every participant leaves not only with fond memories but also with valuable business connections that will extend beyond the greens.

Conclusion: The Longview Chamber of Commerce’s Chamber Classic Golf Tournaments have evolved into much more than mere sporting events. They are catalysts for community engagement, business growth, and the forging of lasting connections. The Fall Classic of 2023 was a resounding success, setting the stage for an even more impressive Spring Classic in 2024. As the Longview community eagerly awaits next year’s tournament, one thing is certain—the Chamber Classic Golf Tournaments have become an integral part of the city’s cultural tapestry, weaving together business, leisure, and the spirit of camaraderie.

Unlocking Prosperity: Longview's Journey to Economic Mobility Where the pines whisper tales of resilience, Longview stands at a crossroads. Economic mobility, the promise of a better tomorrow, is obscured by a complex web of challenges plaguing the low to middle-income residents of this city. Longview’s story mirrors the broader narrative of income inequality, limited opportunities, and economic disparities that echo across America.

A City Grappling with Economic Inequity Longview, with its population surpassing 80,000, boasts a diverse economy fueled by healthcare, education, and manufacturing. However, the jobs available to those with limited education or skills often lead to low-wage positions, creating a cycle of underemployment and financial instability. The affordability crisis in housing and healthcare exacerbates the struggle, while a lack of accessible public transportation hinders mobility. For low to middle-income families, the scarcity of affordable childcare becomes an additional barrier, forcing difficult choices between work and family. Racial and ethnic disparities further compound these issues, with minority communities facing even greater challenges in accessing opportunities, perpetuating a cycle of poverty fueled by historical inequities.

The Data Unveiled: A City of Contrasts In the shadows of prosperity, 18% of Longview’s population grapples with poverty. The working poor, comprising 42% of the population, outnumber those officially classified as impoverished. Hispanic and Black minorities bear a disproportionate burden in this struggle. Yet, hope flickers in Longview’s horizon, revealing stories of promise and potential escape from economic hardship. The data tells a tale of contrasting destinies within Longview’s zip codes. While certain areas boast average salaries of $47,000 at the age of 35, others, like the 75602 zip code, predict a drastically different outcome – a meager $23,000. Longview stands as a city of contrasts, where both heartache and hope reside side by side.

A Vision for Change: Bridging the Gap Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Longview Chamber of Commerce unveils a comprehensive, regional action plan. This plan, a beacon of hope, seeks to forge a connection between employers, employees, and the local community college. It aims to upskill and reskill

8 WWW.LONGVIEWCHAMBER.COM

low to middle-income workers, providing a ladder to prosperity and breaking the cycle of financial hardship.

Measuring Success: Concrete Steps Toward Prosperity Employment Opportunities: Between November 2023 and May 2024, the plan aims to place 30 low to middle-income workers in well-paying jobs. This involves establishing partnerships, identifying high-potential job sectors, and implementing mentorship programs. Inclusive Hiring Practices: Four employer commitments are sought to change recruiting, hiring, and training practices. Outreach, collaboration, and training programs like Skills-based Hiring will be utilized to improve recruitment and retention of diverse talent. Innovation Hub: By securing the commitment of two large companies, an innovation hub will focus on upskilling and reskilling workers for technology jobs. The plan involves identifying potential anchor companies, organizing site visits, and customizing partnership proposals. Community College Engagement: Engaging four companies to actively utilize the community college for certifications aims to enhance the skills of low to middle-income workers. This includes identifying companies, initiating discussions, launching certification programs, and establishing feedback mechanisms.

A Bright Future Beckons With these measurable steps, Longview charts a course toward a future where economic security is not a distant dream but a reality for every family. The community college emerges as a cornerstone of transformation, empowering individuals to shape their destinies. Longview, Texas, stands poised to be the architect of change, ensuring that every member of its community can grasp the promise of prosperity and break free from the chains of poverty.

Navigating Regulatory Challenges: The Chamber’s Unyielding Commitment to Business

Safeguarding Prosperity, Nurturing Growth, and Ensuring a Radiant Future for East Texas Enterprises In our tireless pursuit of advancing prosperity and championing the interests of our dynamic business community, the Longview Chamber of Commerce proudly stands as your advocate, constantly striving to address your needs and concerns. Today, we delve into the intricate landscape of regulations, shedding light on how we steadfastly represent businesses amid the specter of overregulation. Issue 1: FCC and Internet Access High-speed internet connectivity has evolved into an essential facet of modern life, shaping how we work, learn, access healthcare, and communicate. However, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has raised apprehensions by pursuing rulemakings that could potentially hinder Americans’ access to the internet. • Digital Discrimination: The FCC’s adoption of a disparate impact standard has triggered concerns, as it could hold businesses accountable for unforeseen consequences of their decisions. This move poses a threat to private sector investment and the escalation of costs. • Title II Reclassification: The proposition to reclassify broadband under a public utility framework dating back to the 1930s presents the risk of endowing the FCC with extraordinary control over broadband. Such control could impede efforts to connect all Americans. Issue 2: NASAA’s Proposed Rule Changes We staunchly oppose the proposed revisions to NASAA’s model rule on

10 W W W . L O N G V I E W C H A M B E R . C O M

Dishonest or Unethical Business Practices of Broker-Dealers and Agents. We fear that these changes might inadvertently discourage brokers from providing comprehensive financial advice, potentially limiting our community members’ access to diverse investments and expert counsel. Issue 3: NLRB Rule and Joint Employers Our active participation in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s lawsuit against the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) underlines our commitment to shielding businesses from regulatory burdens. The NLRB’s rule on “Joint Employer Status” carries significant implications, impacting franchise owners, contractors, and joint ventures. The Longview Chamber stands shoulder to shoulder with its members, ensuring that businesses maintain their adaptability and prosper, notwithstanding the regulatory challenges. Issue 4: CFPB’s Recent Rule Proposition We take immense pride in our recent triumph against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Our successful challenge to a rule that sought to limit late fees for credit card issuers symbolizes our dedication, not merely to financial stability but also to upholding constitutional principles and fostering a flourishing business environment. Issue 5: SEC Lawsuit and Share Repurchase Rule We are actively engaged in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s lawsuit against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding the Share Repurchase Rule.

LE A DING P EO P L E. L EA D I N G P RO S P ERI T Y.

Background: The Share Repurchase Rule, proposed by the SEC, aimed to regulate share repurchases undertaken by public companies. The SEC contended that this rule was imperative to prevent companies from prioritizing short-term gains over the long-term value of their businesses. It specifically targeted share buybacks; a common strategy employed by businesses to return value to their shareholders. Our Opposition: From the outset, the Chamber of Commerce and other stakeholders vehemently contested the SEC’s assertions regarding the necessity of this rule. We pointedly highlighted the absence of concrete evidence supporting claims that opportunistic buybacks were widespread. Throughout the comment period, our concerns reverberated, underscoring the stark lack of data to substantiate the SEC’s assertions. Acknowledgment of Flaws: In response to our unwavering criticism and concerns, the SEC made significant concessions. The agency stepped back from its initial stance that opportunistic buybacks were a regular occurrence. Instead, it conceded that “personal benefit may be a factor in determining whether to undertake a share repurchase.”

Medicare Supplement Insurance Medicare Advantage Plans

Remaining Challenges: However, it is vital to recognize that, despite these concessions, the SEC has not yet addressed the fundamental flaws within the Share Repurchase Rule. One of these significant issues is the inherent contradiction within the rule’s secondary price-discovery rationale, as highlighted by the court. What Lies Ahead: As we persistently champion your interests in these legal proceedings, we strongly encourage you to remain informed, engaged, and connected with us. Your input and support are not just invaluable but also indispensable as we continue to represent your interests and strive for a more robust and prosperous East Texas. In summary, the Longview Chamber of Commerce stands unwavering as your voice, your advocate, and your champion in the intricate realm of regulatory challenges. We steadfastly adhere to the principles of free enterprise capitalism, economic prosperity, and visionary.

Ribbon Cuttings November/December 2023 Hundreds of active Leadership Longview Alumni are involved every day across our community, serving, leading, and giving back. Together, they are a powerful force. Last year, we introduced a new concept for getting this group of people together on a regular basis based on a cycle of Grow, Connect, Serve. This year we held several webinars aimed at continuing the education of the Leadership Longview program as well as a workshop led by Chad Patterson on HEART. In addition to that programming, alumni were invited to the class of 2024 meet and greet where they got to meet the newest participants, catch up with classmates, and enjoy the fellowship of the members. Each of the different programs and events that are put on are tied to either grow, connect, or serve, the three goals of the Leadership Longview Alumni group. We are excited to continue that effort into 2024.
