New Signs Help Visitors Find Their Way

B

y the time this issue of the Longview Progress Report is printed and distributed, the first group of new road and pedestrian signs will be at work in Longview. It’s called wayfinding or maybe it is way finding, and what it says is what it does. Wayfinding projects are what cities do to help visitors and newcomers find their way to important public facilities, locations and buildings in the city. Three years ago Longview Chamber of Commerce and the City of Longview partnered up to initiate an effective plan to have way finding signs installed throughout the city. In phase one The Chamber hired Babendure Design Group (BDG), a Dallas firm that specializes in urban graphic plan design and is expert in knowing the rules and guidelines required by the Texas Department of Transportation.

6 January/February

Several meetings with BDG resulted in a Master Plan that was already in compliance and had the stamp of approval from TxDOT. The Urban Graphics Master Plan for Longview included schematic drawings for each type and size of sign that would be needed. It also had a city-wide map with a key for every location a sign might be placed. A detailed legend specified what message was on each sign. A commitee of Longview Main Street volunteers identified and selected locations for signs that help drivers coming from any direction to downtown Longview. This phase calls for 21 signs, 16 road signs and 5 pedestrian signs. The road signs will be at locations across the city and the pedestrian signs will be installed at five key locations downtown Longview.

Developing Community Leaders

Leadership Longview - Leaders on the Move

H

ealth and Social Services was the topic for the December session of Leadership Longview. Sponsored by Longview Regional Medical Center, the 25 participants learned about the many excellent medical facilities and services that Longview has to offer. The day began with leadership skills training by John Grubbs with GCI, Inc. who spoke on the topic of Consensus Building for organizations. The morning sessions included presentations by Inman White, Executive Director of Community Healthcore and Psychiatrists Drs. David Brown and Dr. Wanda TerryNichols. The morning concluded with speakers from Community Healthcore in the departments of integrated

care and substance abuse services as well as Chris Hill from Personally Fit by Chris Hill. The lunch hour presentations were by Roxanne Stevenson with the Children’s Advocacy Center and Claire Hunter who talked about the upcoming Health Woman Wreath Run. Hospitals CEOs Ed Banos with Good Shepherd Medical Center and Jim Kendrick with Longview Regional Medical Center updated the class on healthcare reform issues. The final presentations of the afternoon centered on physical therapy options, updates on cardiovascular surgery options and the services of the East Texas Piney Woods Chapter by the American Red Cross.

The Leadership Longview Alumni Network will kick off the new year with an alumni event on Wednesday, February 22 called, “All About SYSCO” - an exclusive tour and luncheon hosted by the management and employees of SYSCO. Leadership Longview alumni will enjoy a tour of the SYSCO plant and be treated to lunch at the state-of-the-art facility. There is no cost to current paid Alumni members and only $20 for non-members. Event invitations will be mailed in mid-January.

Strengthening Our Local Economy

Outdoor Enthusiasts Help Longview ‘Build a Strong Economy’ with Annual EXPO

T

he 30th Annual East Texas Outdoor Expo being held January 27-29, 2012, will continue to help create a strong economy for Longview as vendors park more than 150 boats, 100 RV/travel trailers, ATVs and watercrafts into the 60,000 square feet of viewing space provided by Maude Cobb Activity Center and Exhibit Hall. It’s not just motor sports who will be revving up their engines. More than 40 exhibitors will be offering camping gear, gift packages, and financing options on some of the bigger toys. The EXPO will have some new exhibitors this year such as, a paint ball shoot and laser shoot for the family. Zoo Dynamics is bringing in Long Horns, camels, and a bird exhibit along with the pony rides. A favorite activity for children will return this year with the KIDFISH tank. The KIDFISH Foundation, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to educating young anglers about the environment, conservation of natural resources and making outdoor memories for children and families, according to J.P. Brazeal, director. “We have been involved with the Longview show for several years and the participants continue to grow each year,” Brazeal said. “There is not a better feeling than seeing a young angler catch a big fish. Not only are the participants smiling, the parents are getting a big chuckle

also,” he said. “I think the parents have more fun than the children.” Bringing families together and helping themselves a little in the process may have been exactly what Dale Clark and Gene Brady, owners of Longview Marine, had in mind when they helped start the annual boat show in 1982. With the help of volunteers from the Longview Chamber of Commerce, local vendors found a way to showcase their merchandise in a public forum. The earliest exhibits were primarily boats and yachts from dealers within the community. The expo has since grown to become the largest boat and travel Expo east of I-35. Vendors from a 60-mile radius travel to the heart of Texas Lake Country because of the long-standing tradition of participation and support they know they will find in Longview. Committee Chair Cliff Hale said this group has been planning this event for the last nine months. Doors will open from noon to 8 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Daily prices are $6 for adults, $2 for children ages 6 to 12 and 5 and younger get in for free. Admission is good for both the Activity Center and the Exhibit Hall. WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING … Fleur Décor Fleur Décor is a charming home décor store located downtown. It showcases wall art, hand-painted furniture and unique gifts. Emily Thomas, owner, said, “I joined the Chamber to get my store’s name out there. I wanted to get the scoop on local events and have the opportunity to network.” Emily recently teamed up with another Chamber member, Morgan Abigail for a progressive open house. Both stores agreed that teaming with another store owner helped reach customers they wouldn’t have before. If you are looking for unique home décor, check out Fleur Décor.
