PIE to Date • Host the first annual Partners in Education Conference in August 2017 • Create a Career Ready Plus Certified Campus at Ware Elementary in Longview ISD in AY 2017-present • Open the East Texas Advanced Manufacturing Academy in Fall 2018 • Establish a printed resource guide for parents called Every Child Has Access in 2016-present.

Next Phase • PIE Cases in 2017: Eastman Chemical Company, Texas Operations, and Longview Regional Medical Center • 2018 Objective: Expand the relationships to reach more students • Approach: Business – Education dialogue at the Superintendent’s Forum We teach the future as well as the past.

Dialogue Format • Each sector answered two questions -– Businesses were asked 1) the type of graduates they needed to be successful and 2) the ways they could help the schools graduate those students.

– School districts were asked 1) what they were doing to graduate career ready students along with what else they wanted or needed to do and 2) how businesses could help them graduate those students.

• Businesses and school districts addressed these questions in three different ways -1. Answering the questions within their organizations 2. Sharing and aligning their answers with others in their sector 3. Sharing those answers with representatives from the other sector in small group discussions

Work/Job/Career Skills • Skills related to getting a job – resume writing and interviewing skills, including making a good impression

• Skills related to doing the work itself – accountability, engagement, initiative, leadership, persistence, readiness to work, safety, self-discipline, service to others, teamwork, timeliness/punctuality, writing and a good work ethic • Higher-order, academic/intellectual skills used at work-critical thinking, problem solving and creativity • Technical skills We teach the future as well as the past.

Other Frequent Suggestions • Connect home and school to work – involve teachers and parents in industry-led tours and discussions and for teachers – offer summer training/ externships and conferences that would cover the jobs that were available – put business people in the classroom and teachers in the work environment.

• Offer more internships, apprenticeships and mentorships, coupled with strong instructional preparation and support.

Other Suggestions • Academies like ETxAMA • Survey the 72 State certifications • Incentive programs for students who accomplish educational goals • Subjects taught in school linked with their use at work • Junior Achievement as an extra-curricular program or as a class to teach work-related skills • Reflections on learning what was learned in classes and experiences, meta-learning, learning to learn • Work programs and service days (with non-profit organizations) with strong instructional support.
