Championing for a Thriving Community Through HealthyVIEW & ACCE Fellowship by Jennifer Ware, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System The program launched in October with a meeting at RWJF headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey. Last month, Kelly and Jennifer traveled to Los Angeles to participate in the second session held at the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. The meeting included a design-thinking lab; techniques to transform data into a community story; and opportunities to learn and share best practices with fellow participants. The participating chambers are all working on a health initiative for their trade areas, with projects ranging from reducing obesity rates to improving access to mental health resources. Kelly and Jennifer are using the fellowship as an opportunity to develop HealthyVIEW, the Chamber-led wellbeing initiative introduced at last year’s HealthyVIEW Luncheon.
Championing for a thriving community, HealthyVIEW serves as the catalytic driver to convene key stakeholders to share information and pool resources. Organizations from across industry clusters are seeking proven wellbeing tools with a ROI. Through HealthyVIEW we advocate for real, tangible solutions to create a culture of health for our community. This program experienced an exponential kick with a new fellowship. Last Fall, the Association for Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) launched a new year-long fellowship made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to help chambers of commerce lead community health and wellbeing initiatives. The Longview Chamber of Commerce President Kelly Hall and community partner, CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Jennifer Ware, were invited to join the fellowship program.
Through HealthyVIEW, we aim to advocate for real, tangible solutions to create a culture of health for our community, and the five critical areas of focus include:
“
(1) PHYSICAL HEALTH (2) EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL HEALTH (3) FINANCIAL HEALTH (4) CAREER AND WORKPLACE HEALTH (5) COMMUNITY HEALTH
The Healthy Communities Fellowship has provided invaluable tools and resources to help us further refine HealthyVIEW. -Kelly
”
“The lab work in the most recent session was especially helpful for developing our framework and crystallizing our next steps. I’m looking forward to sharing our HealthyVIEW progress at the Summit on March 27” said Kelly.
The fellowship will conclude in June with a final meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Little Rock Here We Come May 15-17, 2019
TO
Planning has begun to develop an itinerary for the upcoming InterCity Trip that will provide our community leaders a platform to discuss challenges and opportunities our region is facing. The visit creates an environment for interaction among city leaders and facilitates an exchange of best practices and lessons learned. Why an InterCity Visit? The visit is designed to acquire new ideas. It will provide an opportunity to introduce our delegation to innovative programs and impactful projects that may be adapted and implemented in our community. Candid speakers will alert our delegation to the challenges and pitfalls with which they are currently struggling. Little Rock, AR was chosen because of their commitment to making the Little Rock region a great place to live, work, and play. The Little Rock Chamber is committed to leading delegations to participate in learning experiences that will help them build a community for the future. Their dreaming, leading, and taking ACTION has recently resulted in:
• An exploratory study into Ford Next Generation Learning (NGL); comprised of 4 ISDs, the Chamber and business leaders. • Purchasing 300 acres, including a 130-acre tract that port officials say would in turn free up nearly 1,000 acres of port property to establish a large site for heavy manufacturing.
6
Like Longview, Little Rock also had a good foundation to build from as a result of a strong community and business leadership. They have done an excellent job focusing on amenities, housing, education, healthcare, social and civic capital, transportation, and redevelopment of their downtown! Little Rock knows how to tell their story! They focus on how far the dollar can go, great commute times, excellent weather, and picturesque outdoors (hmm…sounds familiar!). Their success is recognized by entities such as www.livibility.com and www.Forbes.com Best Places for Businesses and Careers, Forbes.com Best Employers List, as well as ‘Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List. As a participant you will be able to focus on best practices and experience true peer-to-peer learning. The networking and relationship building through shared experiences will help us move forward on building a common foundation of understanding. Activities begin on Wednesday, May 15 at 1 p.m. and will conclude on Friday, May 17 at 1 p.m. Each participant is responsible for securing their own travel and hotel accommodations. To take advantage of the early bird registration fee of $300, register by April 5. All registrations received on or after April 6 be $375. We recommend participants make hotel arrangements with the Capital Hotel in downtown Little Rock as soon as possible. ................................................................................................
• The development of a VC FinTech Accelerator Program.

• Learning how to tell the Little Rock story and receiving recognition by the 2018 Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation for its “Love, Little Rock” campaign by the Public Relations Society of America.

Education
The Road Less Traveled Creates Vitality in Longview
V
Many roads emerge for students at high school graduation and, for some of these graduates, transitioning straight to the workforce instead of a university will make an impactful difference. There are great opportunities for workforce entrants to make good salaries without having to invest in a four-year degree.
OC

Since the introduction of House Bill 5 in 2013, Texas students can get a head start on their career plans through selection of a defined path in high school, allowing them to begin education in a chosen field. There are five paths, or endorsements, from which a student may choose that begin at the start of their ninth-grade year:
they need in their organizations. Conversely, there are candidates in the labor pool who are willing to work but unqualified to fill the open roles. This mismatch of supply and demand is referred to nationwide as the Workforce Skills Gap, and it burdens our economy locally, statewide, and at the national level. Chambers of Commerce around the nation are addressing this problem, championing a demand-driven approach to closing the gap. U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO, Thomas J. Donahue states, “No single entity has a greater stake in the strength of our talent pool than the business community. We have the ideas, the innovations, and the incentive to drive change and create solutions. At this moment of rapid change and massive transition, we must put talent first. That requires us to bridge the gaps that exist between students and workers and the jobs that will provide them opportunity, security, and prosperity.”
• STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) • Business and Industry • Public Services • Arts and Humanities • Multidisciplinary Studies Health care/social services combined with manufacturing comprise 30% of jobs in Longview; there are many opportunities for good paying jobs right here in our own community. Unfortunately, employers often find it challenging to fill open positions due to lack of workers skilled in the trades
“
So, take the road less traveled or take the one forged ahead by many generations of university graduates before. Just realize that there are multiple viable options and all are vitally important to the health of our economy.
Educating the parents is the most important thing in the community because we don’t want them to think that getting a college education is not important. But what is the overall objective that you are wanting for your child? It’s to get a good-paying job.” – James Brewer, Longview High School Principal

Yet, a stigma still exists around Career and Technical Education, that it is a “less-than” career choice. Those jobs can be perceived to be “dirty” or too dangerous which is no longer the case. As partners in education, this coalition of business leaders, educators, and community organizations must break the stigma of choosing the road less traveled and help support students by educating them, and their parents, on the various career pathways available right here in East Texas.

Two local students had the opportunity to serve a day as pages to area state representatives during the East Texas Coalition’s recent trip to Austin, comprised of the Longview, Kilgore, Lindale, and Tyler Chambers of Commerce. While the chambers met with agency leaders and elected officials to discuss business issues in East Texas, these two students experienced our legislative process up close and personal for a day. Congratulations to our two new legislative representative pages!
