Business Counts!

How Business Can Contribute to an Accurate 2020 Census to Shape Our Future!

The U.S. Constitution mandates a count of every person in America every 10 years, and our next census begins this month!

Data from the decennial count produce a basic picture of who is living in the United States, and it helps to allocate $800 billion annually in federal funding, including transportation, housing, education and workforce development services that contribute to a thriving economy. The

census also determines political representation at all levels of government, including how many U.S. Representatives each state receives. Texas is poised to have an increase in U.S. Representatives.

We get a chance once every 10 years to stand up and be counted. We think that every person in our trade area is important, and every single one of them must be part of this census. It is important to the future of our trade area and our state in federal funding.

This foundational set of population information is also used to inform the creation of many data products that the public and private sectors use every day. Companies have come to rely on the census for crucial demographic information about customers, the workforce, and the economic landscape.

Achieving an accurate population count is important and requires assistance from both the public and private sectors. Business can play a key role by encouraging customers, employees and the general public to complete their census questionnaires.

Advocacy Strengthening Longview by Advocating for Local Business are accounted for. This count is especially important in Texas because we are a fast-growing state. There have been estimates that Texas could get up to four more Congressmen who can advocate for us in Washington, DC. While other states are losing population, Texas is growing because of our favorable job prospects and business climate. One interesting fact about the census is that it calls for all residents to be counted, not just citizens. So, if you are living here on a temporary status, you should also participate in the census. On January 16, Carrie Sulivan, Director of Corporate Communications, presented the proposal to business leaders in Longview.

You Can Help Bridge the Talent Gap! TAKE THE SURVEY NOW

[ CLICK HERE ] You can help bridge our region’s workforce gap by participating in an employer’s view survey. Your Chamber was selected to participate in The Graduate! Network’s “Bridging the Talent Gap,” (BTTG) an employer and employee engagement initiative supported with funding from the Trellis Foundation. The survey identifies the challenges that you, as employers, face in finding the right skills and education for current and future positions in our region.

Filling the Gap for Student Success Student success is generally dependent upon three facets: parents, teachers, and the student. Deficiency in any of those three is like a 3-legged stool - without all legs; it cannot stand. So it is with students. Crowded classrooms and working families shorten those stool legs. As part of our Career Ready Plus Campus Certification initiative, the Chamber takes the responsibility of convening key partners – businesses and non-profit organizations – who have the skills, abilities, and resources to bolster the relationships among the parents, students, and educators, and fill in the gaps that exist between the three. The Chamber assists in this way at Ware East Texas Montessori Academy by recruiting mentors and tutors. These volunteers are assigned to a particular classroom where they work with students who need more indepth instruction to grasp the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) required at each grade level. As students master a core subject, they, along with their mentors, earn an exclusive dinner at The Summit Club to celebrate the achievement. These types of rewards incentivize students to set goals to perform at higher levels. The result goes far beyond the score earned on a test. These positive influences in a child’s life are developing key character strengths in them which “are as influential as IQ in determining life outcomes not only in school, but also in the workplace, and in areas such as health and criminality.” (Pekel et al., 2015)

This survey is thorough and takes about 30 minutes to complete. You can save it in process, take a break, and then return to your spot to complete it. THE DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION IS FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 2020. There are only five other Texas communities chosen for this endeavor: Austin, Corpus Christi, Ft. Worth, Irving, and San Antonio. BTTG is an initiative sponsored by The Graduate! Network with the goal of helping employers, learning providers and other community stakeholders understand the challenges of ensuring a skilled workforce. This information will be used to create a plan of action to help set communitywide strategies in the East Texas area. We invite you to create this change by collaboratively working together to advance education and talent development issues within this region.
