Did you know one of the greatest challenges employers will be facing in the next 10-20 years is health and wellbeing in the workplace? Why? For the first time in U.S. history, we are raising a generation of children who may live sicker and die younger than their parents’ generation. Therefore, it is becoming more and more imperative for communities to create powerful partnerships to drive tough discussions, and change to give future generations the opportunity to thrive! What is the role of the Chamber as we prepare for the future? It is to serve as a 3C Chamber: Champion. Convener. Catalyst. We are to be the champion for building a thriving community, a catalyst for business growth and a convener of influencers to get things done. Plus, we are addressing the technology and global competition within a world of increasing unrest and political fragmentation through strategic and intentional planning. What is YOUR Chamber doing to encourage transformational change? We have not shied away from taking on the biggest problems and what needs to be done to create a great place to live. The path began to solidify in 2011 as the board demonstrated their willingness to think BIG and BOLD. The shift in our organization’s culture began as a direct result of leading the Chamber’s inaugural InterCity Trip to Chattanooga. Over the past eight (8) years, visits have encouraged community influencers to take steps to address the problems and challenges. Correlations can be drawn of a cultural shift within our community!

Children’s Children There are many results which can be reflected: • The passage and implementation of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. • Passage of the $104+ million bond election. • Keep Longview Beautiful’s work and opening of The Green. • Mainstreet’s continued focus on building a vibrant downtown. • Focus on completing the 10 miles of CONNECTED trails. • The task force that has led the work to see the new Arboretum is coming to fruition. The intentional work of the Chamber intensified in 2015 when we embarked on a collective impact initiative around Education/Workforce Development. A strategic and deliberate approach that brought people and organizations together to effectively address cradle–to-career solutions was birthed. Numerous outcomes have resulted in a short period of time, including:
What can we do to build a healthy community?
Longview leaders must continue to DREAM, VISION, and ACT to create a community for future generations. We must tackle the tough problems and find solutions. That is why your Chamber is embarking on a new partnership with Buckner International as part of our HealthyVIEW work to address the health and wellbeing of the current and future workforce. Together we intend to conduct an environmental scan. The scan will include a thorough analysis of demographic reports and existing community assessments. We will survey three specific segments: existing employees, social agencies and organizations, and individuals. Focus groups will help us understand key findings of the scan in our five (5) priority areas; • Physical Health • Emotional & Spiritual Health • Financial Health • Career & Workplace Health • Community Health
• Produce the annual resource magazine Every Child Has Access. The publication is a tool for students, parents, teachers, and counselors. • Meet bi-annually with area Superintendents on a wide variety of topics. Recently the education task force met with the senior policy team of the Governor’s office. Superintendents and key influencers reviewed and provided input on the recommendations.
The findings of the work will be released at the January 28, 2020, Annual Chamber Banquet. Dr. Albert Reyes, CEO of Buckner International, will present key findings and discuss potential pathways of continuing the transformational work to “LeadingPeople.LeadingProsperity.”
The BIG question for you is, will you help us keep Longview moving? What will we do to build a community of health?
• Produce Partners in Education Conference (P.I.E.). Outcomes have included the release of a new video targeting parents; showcased internship programs and job shadowing with employers. Slated to bring Lonnie Moore with the Leader in Me Leadership Model on August 28, 2019. • Served as a champion to open the East Texas Advanced Manufacturing Academy on August 28, 2018.

Frank Kenny is a successful entrepreneur, chamber board of directors Frank is the founder of: chair, and chamber President/CEO. He now coaches chamber professionals, consults with chambers, trains staff and members, and speaks professionally. He helps Chambers and Chamber Professionals reach their goals. He has worked with hundreds of chambers over the past 10 years on their staff and member training, strategic planning, board retreats and orientations, social media, digital marketing, technology, and most other areas of chamber work. As a chamber professional, his team was one of the first to embrace social media and digital marketing. Within 18 months of launching their campaigns, the membership of that 45-year-old chamber had doubled. While with his chamber, Frank was appointed to the executive committee of his state’s chamber of commerce (AWB) and the board of his state’s chamber professionals association (WCCE). He is a graduate of the Western Association of Chamber Executives (W.A.C.E.) Academy program. He has a degree in finance and an MBA. Frank serves on the faculty of the Institute for Organization Management (IOM) and W.A.C.E’s Academy program.

Education
Championing Raising Highly Capable Kids Program Expands to Equip More Parents in Longview Raising Highly Capable Kids™, a parenting program brought to Longview in the Fall of 2017 by the Longview Chamber of Commerce, is expanding! Pine Tree ISD received an 18-month community grant, which includes free curriculum supplies for facilitators and participants as well as formal training from the non-profit organization, Rezilient Kidz™. The Chamber initiated the program at Ware East Texas Montessori Academy as part of its Career Ready Plus Campus Certification to address parent engagement in education. The Chamber also received a community grant in 2017, which expired in February 2019. In its fourth semester, the program is going strong with 22 parents currently enrolled, and 39 who have already graduated. To graduate, participants must complete at least 10 out of 13 classes. The curriculum, offered in both Spanish and English, focuses on The Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets, which are positive, researchbased qualities that influence a child’s development and help them become caring, responsible, and productive. The program is FREE to participants. It is set up to utilize community partners for volunteer facilitators, childcare help, and dinner for participants, volunteers, and their children.
Miranda Chism, Parent Liaison for Pine Tree ISD, says she applied for the grant “For the opportunity to bring a positive resource to families in the community. If there are programs and resources out there to help increase healthy skills in parents, then I believe it’s important to seek those programs and offer it to our parents.” Chism learned about Raising Highly Capable Kids™ from the Chamber’s Partners in Education Conference in August 2018. She volunteered last fall as a facilitator for the program at Ware, though in a different school district, in order to observe the program to ensure its fit for Pine Tree. Pine Tree’s grant is a wonderful resource for the community, as it entitles any organization in our community who would like to host the program to get free curriculum materials beginning in August 2019 through February 2021. There is no limit to the amount available. Anyone interested must order through Ms. Chism by email at mchism@ptsd.org. Additionally, Ms. Chism is seeking community partners to fill the roles of facilitators, childcare help, or provide dinners throughout the semester.

Leadership Longview Project Provides Shelter to Longview Community Ministries Clients The 2019 Leadership Longview Class selected Longview Community Ministries (LCM) as their project. LCM was in need of a shelter or pavilion for their clients. This will allow people to have seating and protection from the sun and rain while waiting in line for services. In addition to the pavilion, the class built shelving inside for additional storage. The project was unveiled on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 4:30 pm, with a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony. The Leadership Longview Class of 2019 put in countless hours in preparation, planning, and executing on this important and much appreciated project.

Championing Speakers Bureau Benefits Chamber Members The Speakers Bureau offers Chamber members and community groups the expertise and insight on a variety of topics of interest to business professionals. These speakers can provide stimulating presentations, representing a wide range of professional specialties. Speaker formats include keynotes, lectures, panels and hands-on training. How do I find a speaker? Speakers are listed according to the topic of their presentations and alphabetically by last name. Requests for customized presentations will be assigned to a category and forwarded to all speakers listed within the category of the particular request. If a match is available, you will be contacted by the speaker within 7-10 business days.
How can I be listed as a speaker? As a member benefit, all members of the Longview Chamber of Commerce are eligible to be listed as a speaker at no charge. You must be a member in good standing to apply for participation. There is a maximum listing of two categories per speaker and/or company. Please allow at least two weeks for a written response. Unless otherwise agreed, presentations should not incorporate marketing of any specific company or service offerings. The non-member application fee is $300 per year.

Little Rock Here We Come May 15-17, 2019
Planning has begun to develop an itinerary for the upcoming InterCity Trip that will provide our community leaders an opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities our region is facing. The visit will provide an opportunity for interaction among city leaders and facilitates an exchange of best practices and lessons learned. Why an InterCity Visit? The visit is designed to acquire new ideas. It will provide an opportunity to introduce our delegation to innovative programs and impactful projects that may be adapted and implemented in our community. Candid speakers will alert our delegation to the challenges and pitfalls with which they are currently struggling. Little Rock, AR was chosen because of their commitment to making the Little Rock region a great place to live, work, and play. The Little Rock Chamber is committed to leading delegations to participate in learning experiences that will help them build a community for the future. Their dreaming, leading, and taking ACTION has recently resulted in: An exploratory study into Ford Next Generation Learning (NGL); comprised of 4 ISDs, the Chamber and business leaders. Purchasing 300 acres, including a 130-acre tract that port officials say would in turn free up nearly 1,000 acres of port property to establish a large site for heavy manufacturing. The development of a VC FinTech Accelerator Program. Learning how to tell the Little Rock story and receiving recognition by the 2018 Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation for its “Love, Little Rock” campaign by the Public Relations Society of America. Like Longview, Little Rock also had a good foundation to build from as a result of a strong community and business leadership. They have done an excellent job on focusing on amenities, housing, education, healthcare, social and civic capital, transportation, and redevelopment of their downtown! Little Rock knows how to tell their story! They focus on how far the dollar can go, great commute times, excellent weather, and picturesque outdoors (hmm…sound familiar!). Their success is recognized by entities such as www.livibility.com and Forbes.com Best Places for Businesses and Careers, Forbes.com Best Employers List, as well as ‘Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List. As a participant you will be able to focus on best practices and experience true peer-to-peer learning. The networking and relationship building through shared experiences will help us move forward on building a common foundation of understanding. Activities begin on Wednesday, May 15th at 1PM and will conclude on Friday, May 17th at 1PM. Each participant is responsible for securing their own travel and hotel accommodations. To take advantage of the early bird registration fee please complete the attached form and return with payment; $300 by April 5th or register online. All registrations received after April 6th the fee will be $375. We recommend participants make hotel arrangements with the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Little Rock as soon as possible.
