Welcome As the Mayor of Longview, I welcome you to our community. Longview has experienced remarkable momentum over the last 4-5 years in spite of a struggling national economy. A new Longview is taking shape all over town. We have new schools, new churches, new walking trails, new medical facilities, new subdivisions, and new streets. We’ve also seen continued revitalization in areas such as downtown and our train depot. This momentum is the result of a collaborative effort by many people and their passion to make Longview a better community. We have worked together to make Longview a hub for many in the East Texas Region. This collaboration has been a partnership of both public and private entities. I am proud to say that the greater Longview area recently received the #1 ranking of cities in the state for job growth from June 2010 through June 2011. Our unemployment rate has been more than a full point better than the state average and nearly two points better than the national average. To maintain momentum we must continue to find ways to improve the quality of life for our residents, and I believe this community is doing that. Every day since being elected mayor in 2005, I have witnessed remarkable people throughout Longview accomplishing remarkable achievements. I am truly humbled to be given the opportunity to serve Longview. Jay dean

Mayor, City of Longview

Congratulations! You are holding the 2012 edition of Uniquely Longview, the award-winning publication of the Longview Chamber of Commerce. You’ll find it a valuable resource in learning about the many opportunities of life in Longview. One of America’s finest Christian universities, LeTourneau University, brought me to Longview several years ago. This year, I’m honored to give back to the community as Chairman of the Longview Chamber of Commerce. We have a great story to tell. Only the most professional chambers in the United States receive a 5-Star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber and Longview was honored with that recognition last year. The Longview Chamber of Commerce was also named as one of only two finalists in their budget category for Chamber of the Year by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. The Chamber staff is acknowledged again and again for their creativity and productivity. Led by President/CEO Kelly Hall and our Board of Directors, our Chamber staff is dedicated to representing the interests of the business community and our 1,200 members. Just one example of their leadership is the Total Resource Campaign initiative which will enhance the Chamber’s ability to serve and connect our local businesses in new ways. Longview has a strong economy and one of the healthiest business climates in the nation. It is a city that works together – beginning with the productive cooperation of local governments. In a multitude of ways, the Chamber works in partnership with the City of Longview and the Longview Economic Development Corporation to build our community. A nationally-recognized Chamber of Commerce, a vibrant business climate and a city with positive civic leadership are all uniquely Longview. I invite you to come find opportunity here. dale a. Geocaching is an outdoor sport in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches.” A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is often described as a “game of high-tech hide and seek.” Caches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica. After 10 years of activity there are over 1.3 million active geocaches published on various websites. There are over 5 million geocachers worldwide. (Wikipedia)

Anna Chamness climbs out of her SUV, searching the parking lot for the rest of her team. Geocache.com flagged that a new cache had been hidden on the Paul G. Boorman Trail and she wants to be the first to log on as its finder. This treasure won’t make her wealthy, but for people with an inclination toward curiosity, adventure, mystery, and the thrill of hunting — like Anna and her friends — it will make her happy. “It’s all about the hunt,” Anna says, checking her iPhone for waymarkers described on her geocache app. “Whatever is hidden in the container is just for fun. And, of course, bragging rights.”

She’s not dressed for swimming. “We’ll think of something,” she tells her teammates as they drive along US Highway 259 toward one of the many lakes that are famous to locals for water sports and fishing. “My grandfather taught me to fish at this lake. He says the bass practically jump onto your bait. But if I fall in the water you have to replace my shoes. I bought these with my first paycheck.” Charting caches often leads geocachers through unexpected locations: pastures, fields, creekbanks — think of it as off-roading for the sneaker set. Regardless of the struggles during the journey, the overwhelming consensus from geocachers across the globe is that discovering beauty in nature and seeing wildlife in their habitat is the real treasure in the hunt. WHICH SITE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

The aspect of social media that makes it a marketing gem is that, in this relatively inexpensive forum, businesses can develop relationships with consumers that they previously were unable to meet. According to Jody Underhill and Eric Kurit of Upside Down Iceberg, here are the benefits to businesses of any size with an intentional approach to social media:

• Makes a business credible to consumers • Increases referrals by customers • Creates new relationships with potential customers

When it comes to choosing which social media site is the best to extend a company’s brand, there are four common rules for success that Erik Qualman suggests in his book, Socialnomics:

Horaney ’s , Inc. Celebrates 71st Year In 1940 Harry and Lorene Horaney opened a feed store in Downtown Longview at 207 N. Court. Horaney’s quickly became a community gathering place. The business grew, evolving out of its rural heritage, and carrying new merchandise to keep pace with the changing society. The store began to attract homeowners as well as farmers, and Horaney’s Feed Store flourished. Albert, Harry’s son, married Betty Barkett of Marshall in 1958, and together they worked with Harry until Harry’s death in 1977. Albert relocated the store to a larger and more modern building at 301 W. Methvin. Today it remains the same friendly store it was in 1940. In 1996 Albert Horaney died, and as a tribute to his memory, the City of Longview changed the name of Court Street to Horaney Street. Betty, like Albert and his father Harry, has enjoyed helping many people over the years, never wanting recognition.

Today Betty Horaney continues the business with her son Ron, representing the third Horaney generation to run the store. Customers still come downtown to browse, shop, have a cup of coffee and visit, and find a large supply of birdfeeders, birdhouses, fountains, plants, chemicals, organic products, sprayers, garden seeds, farm supplies, horse supplies, tools, cattle feeders, wire, and an endless array of other items. Giving back to the community for all the goodness shown the family, Betty is active in many worthwhile projects in town. It is Betty Horaney’s hope that the Horaney business will continue through her son, and one day pass to her four grandchildren, keeping the family tradition alive in Longview. “God has blessed me,” she says, “not only with my family, but with my customers and the many friends I have made throughout the years through this wonderful business.”

Restaurants are full, retail outlets boast returning

customers, and new businesses are giving Longview

serious consideration since official indicators point to

the number one spot in the state’s record for job creation. Longview’s business owners, area high schools, and a

growing economic base prove the opposite of national headlines. With so much media attention on jobs, job

creation, the potential for another recession and desperate recovery efforts by all corners of the marketplace, getting something right is a reason to crow.

This data isn’t new, and, kudos to local business people, it hasn’t changed much either. From the business owner

to the person on the assembly line, everyone in this area is pulling his own and helping create an atmosphere for growth. The community pride shows.

The Marketplace Shines The redevelopment of Longview’s downtown

area — building facades, better roadways and parking,

restaurants, outdoor markets, and new shops — has created an energy that’s mobilizing downtown and is spreading throughout the city. Entrepreneurs are opening trendy shops, chefs are staking their reputations on their grill

skills, and artists are taking their products to the streets in a rejuvenation of an urban marketplace. Last fall, the

Longview Museum of Fine Arts expanded its downtown influence with the addition of ArtWorks — an art

center for children. These endeavors do create jobs in downtown, but the real impression is felt with the renewed buying power local

residents provide through confidence in their local marketplace.

With a Facebook page to keep local consumers motivated, The Longview Economic Development Corporation

continues the I Shop Longview campaign it launched to remind consumers how spending just 5% more of their paychecks shopping in the community (as opposed to

shopping in other towns or the Internet) would impact the local infrastructure by $225 million and potentially create up to 1,800 new jobs. Dr. Ray Perryman, of the

economic analysis firm The Perryman Group, revealed that consumers typically “leak” 19% of their shopping to other communities. This applies to retail as well as

manufacturing purchases. To stop this significant loss, the I Shop Longview program works with local retail and restaurant outlets by offering an incentive card. Local vendors indicate when purchases qualify for

the card and consumers can turn in their I Shop Longview

Infrastructure Residents, commuters and visitors have several means to access the area. One Interstate freeway and two U.S. highways run

through the City of Longview, and in addition, four Texas state highways also converge in Longview. Two Texas state highway spurs serve to connect highways in Longview and are one of the components that make travel in the city so convenient.

Interstate 20 is an east/west freeway that connects Longview to Dallas, approx. 125 miles (201 km) to the west and to Shreveport, Louisiana, approx. 60 miles (97 km) to the east. U.S. Highway 80 runs through the central district of Longview. U.S. Hwy 80 was once a coast to coast highway from Tybee Beach near Savannah, Georgia and ran continuously across the southern part of the United States to San Diego, California. Today its western terminus is Dallas, Texas, making the length only 1,032 miles (1,661 km).

U.S. Highway 259 is a 250-mile (400 km) north/south spur route connecting U.S. 59 from Nacogdoches, Texas and U.S. 59 near the Oklahoma/Arkansas border just south of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Before Interstate 20, US 259 went through the center of Longview on a route that now is designated Texas State Highway 31 and Spur 502.

The backup beeper’s strident warning pierced the hot, stale morning air as yet another 18-wheeler from Mississippi delivered hay to a rancher in Texas ravaged by the drought last summer. The cattle that hadn’t been sold off had crossed property lines desperately looking for green grass. The rancher wiped his sweaty brow, dumbfounded by the irony of having to import hay. The greatest drought in 50 years left an imprint on Texas that won’t easily be forgotten. By September 2011, east Texas was 15 inches below normal rainfall, leaving lake bottoms cracked, pine trees dropping needles, farms wracked by withered stalks, and ranches depending on outsiders to preserve their stock. Even if winter rains brought relief, it wouldn’t be enough to replenish the millions of dollars lost to the whims of the 2011 La Nina weather pattern.

became a second home for pets and livestock that had been evacuated. Volunteers from many local areas drove horse trailers to fire-ravaged locations to coax and cajole horses, goats, sheep, cows, and dogs into leaving before the fires swept through barns and pens. With blackened lawns, and long fingers of smoking damage dividing properties, the animals were sometimes the trickiest to evacuate. Devastating to all in this community, the news of loss of human life tore through the fabric of our collective soul when a mother and baby succumbed to the flames in Gladewater.

Still, the wildfires of Labor Day didn’t defeat the first responders. Motivated by inner resolve, they fought on, until within a week, these major fires had been contained or extinguished. In the weeks following, flames continued to pop up in pastures, interstate dividers and rural byways, but those undefeatable first responders — professional firefighters, volunteer firefighters and neighbors — were a three-corded rope no disaster could ruin. It’s estimated that by the middle of September more than 53,000 acres of east Texas were lost to wildfires, taxing the financial infrastructure of most communities. FEMA sent crews to help, meteorologists descended in number to evaluate conditions, and firefighters regrouped for a dry autumn that could feed more fires. But, the Texas character that shone through our folks in a crisis of wildfire proportion is the same in the residents that make up our cities, and that’s the kind of first response, and protection, people can count on. They’re real, East Texas people.

U.S. National Balloon race Announced this past summer, Longview and the Great Texas Balloon Race will host the Balloon Federation of America’s U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship beginning the summer of 2012 and continuing through 2014. The Great Texas Balloon Race’s reputation as a top-flight event and the efforts of Dr. Bill Bussey have landed Longview this premiere sporting event that the entire city will enjoy. Presented by Curves and the Great Texas Balloon Race, over 70 balloons will fly the skies of Longview as they chase after bragging rights, prize money and the camaraderie of a good competition. The caliber of pilots racing to win a total prize purse of $50,000 and qualify for an opportunity to represent the United States in the World Champion competition will guarantee an outstanding show for those entertained by a flotilla of hot air balloons floating over rooftops. But that’s not all... Longview will be in the national spotlight, and that translates to Real East Texas hospitality, hardworking volunteers, booked hotels, bustling restaurants and satisfied expressions from guests new to our city.

“The best pilots in the world come to Longview every summer because it’s a top notch place to fly.” It all started with one hot air balloon. Just one colorful,

— Johnny Petrehn, World Champion Balloonist

striped balloon attached to a wicker basket. That momentary enchantment has led to a 40-year avocation with the sport of hot air ballooning that distinguishes Dr. Bussey with holding world records, creating an internationally renowned hot air balloon festival institution (the balloon glow), and turning his hometown into a world-recognized leader in hot air balloon races. Now, due to his reputation, hard work, and ingenuity with the sport, he and a team of volunteers have landed a three-year contract to host the U.S. National Balloon Championship. But don’t look for Dr. Bussey in the flashiest or biggest balloon during the events. He’ll be doing what he loves best — flying a single passenger basket, Skydancer, and enjoying the feeling of flight.

The Great Texas Balloon Race, founded by local dentist Dr. Bill Bussey in 1978, has grown from a local gathering of friends to an international competition known as the longest running hot air balloon event in Texas. This world class competition features sport and special-shaped balloons and covers a three-day weekend every summer, from dawn to dusk. Dr. Bussey created the now famous “balloon glow,” and the grounded balloon light-up (a controlled firing of the gas burners that make the balloons rise) has been copied all over the world. Outstanding Medical Care in Longview by Kimberly Fish

One of the first questions people ask when relocating to a new city is,

“Where can I find good medical care?” If you happen to hear that question shout back, “We have two outstanding hospitals! You don’t even have to look far.” It’s true. Both hospitals, anchoring the middle of Longview, offer comprehensive trauma, preventative, or elective procedures, and you don’t even have to navigate one of those big city’s behemoth parking lots to access the quality care. According to the rave reviews from outside agencies and local patients, the temperature of Longview’s medical community is outstanding. And it’s convenient.

In addition, Good Shepherd provides care for the smallest of patients in a Level IIIa Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Staffed by a multidisciplinary team, they are able to care for babies born as early as 24 weeks and as small as 15 oz. Good Shepherd also offers perinatology services for high risk pregnancies keeping patients from having to travel to Dallas or Shreveport for these services. This service allows perinatologists to monitor the patient’s progress, collaborating with her obstetrician, to help manage the pregnancy. Not everyone suffers acute chest pain or a stroke, so for those who like their medicine with a bit of gadgetry, GSMC has developed a new minimally-invasive knee replacement procedure powered by the MAKO RIO©

In addition to launching the internal medicine residency programs, Good Shepherd is also hosting third-year medical students for the University of North Texas Health Science CenterTexas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft Worth. With a teaching hospital expertise, the benefit of exposing these students to the positive environment at GSMC might also influence them to pursue an internal medicine residency. Some of the life-saving innovations being performed at Longview Regional include beating heart bypass surgeries, minimally invasive heart surgeries, and valve replacement as well as robotic-assisted heart and lung surgeries. To further provide current and comprehensive cardiovascular services, Longview Regional has recently added a third cath lab and enhancements to the cardiovascular surgical suite. In 2012, LRMC will offer a dedicated cardiovascular floor to facilitate better patient care for those receiving cardiac care in the hospital. Emergency Room offering a unique 30 minutes pledge to their patients. The goal is for each patient who enters the ER to be seen by a physician, a physician assistant, or a nurse practitioner within 30 minutes of arrival. No one is rushed through the ER, but a prompt initial diagnosis and consultation can help turn an emergency situation into an effective and efficient care experience for the patient. LRMC records prove that most patients are being seen within 20 minutes of arrival, with the caveat that life-threatening emergencies always take precedence over non-life threatening situations. Residents of Longview, and the surrounding East Texas area, have convenient access to the most advanced cancer care provided by Texas Oncology/Longview Cancer Center. The Center works with both hospitals and offers medical and radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology, and gynecologic oncology. Patients of Texas Oncology Longview Cancer Center benefit from leading-edge medical services and participation in innovative research programs. In addition, support services are committed to addressing the educational, emotional, financial, and nutritional needs of patients during their cancer treatment. Texas Oncology Longview Cancer Center offers a state of the art cancer care that is close to home and includes PET/CT scans and mammosite therapy as part of the treatment. It also holds regular breast cancer and general oncology support groups. The Center treats all types of cancer, from the most prevalent forms such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, and lung cancer to any of the than 200 forms identified by the medical community.

CORE

From prenatal care to nutritional classes to help patients with weight management, Wellness Pointe covers a comprehensive level of care. HIV is on the rise nationally, and Gregg County leads East Texas in the number of people affected with HIV/AIDS because of a higher number of homeless and transient folks. But places like Wellness Pointe reach out to the hurting by offering treatment and direction to government services. And its clients overwhelmingly insist that they approve of the courteous and helpful intervention they receive at Wellness Pointe.

Windridge Therapeutic Equestrian Center The Center for Rehabilitation Excellence, CORE, has helped rehabilitate many Longview workers who have faced job-related injuries. In its concern for the ongoing recovery and general health of Longview’s workforce, CORE offers a program called WorkSTEPS, an analysis of the physical requirements of a worker’s job and his ability to complete them at a specific job site. CORE visits various employers and evaluates the physical demands of local employees, and then develops a prevention and recovery program best suited to rehabilitate injured workers. Keeping the workforce healthy is what makes Longview’s commercial enterprises successful.

Our Brand PrOMise

Longview offers an authentic East Texas experience for visitors, residents, and business. The people are friendly, possess a can-do attitude, and are hard working. Our healthy economic environment attracts businesses: job opportunities, strong/affordable workforce, retail, dining and manufacturing.

Dear Chamber Family: Together we rang in 2011 with many reasons to celebrate and count our blessings.

The strength of Longview’s business climate is evident when compared with other communities across the state and for this we are all thankful.

In a robust economy, the Chamber is there to promote your business. In lean

times, our Chamber rises to the challenge set before us and fills in the gaps such as

promoting entrepreneurialism and start-up businesses throughout the City, proposing alternate ways to communicate with potential clients, and providing cost effective networking workshops and on-line help centers.

The Chamber recently opened the new Visitors Center to welcome our out-of-town guests and educate our residents to all Longview has to offer.

The Chamber is now leading the charge for retail/commercial recruitment and

expansion and continues to work closely with LEDCO and the City of Longview to pursue new and innovative ways to attract new business and services to our beautiful home.

Through continued emphasis on strengthening our local economy, promoting

our community, and advocacy, the Chamber monitors movements in Austin and

Washington D.C. and brings relevant issues forward to the membership for review and action.

The Chamber is committed to the core value of taking care of business in Longview.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your 2011 Chamber Chairman. Hang on as we fly into 2012 – don’t get left behind, become an active part of your Chamber.

Spirited, strong and committed, the Longview Chamber of Commerce offers so many ways to promote your business and your community. Stay tuned. Sincerely,

Meeting the needs of our MeMbers improved Communications and Access to information Engaging members through the Chamber’s websites and social media platform continues to allow the Chamber to stay on the cutting edge of communications. The use of electronic newsletters, social media sites, LongviewVotes. com, MyChamberApp, and a new mobile messaging device, the Chamber serves as an example for using electronic means, in addition to the printed word, to keep its membership informed, educated and in the forefront of important issues and events that affect the business world on a daily basis. The Chamber Buzz and the Longview Progress Report continue to provide members and the community with important information on a weekly and bi-monthly basis respectively. In 2011 the Longview Chamber conducted a Communications Survey of its membership, gaining their input on how they would prefer to receive Chamber communications. A new membership marketing piece was also developed to continue the Chamber’s successes in gaining new members and informing current members of the numerous opportunities their membership affords.

The Chamber continues to provide local businesses with topical, relevant information that aids their day-to-day operations.

Community Pride and beautification efforts Beginning in 2006 and continuing today, the Longview Chamber has been a strong advocate for Keeping Longview Beautiful. As recently as 2008, the Chamber was a strong partner in supporting the request and receipt of the One Hundred Acres of Heritage Main Street’s $30,000 for its Façade Improvement Grant Program. Maintaining the character and beauty of Longview remains a high priority for the Longview Chamber.

Leadership Identification and Development The Chamber’s support of Leadership Longview (now in its 30th year) and its Alumni Group has been an important part of nurturing and empowering community leaders in the area. This year, Leadership Longview completed a healing garden for clients of The Arc of Gregg County. The Leadership Alumni Network hosted three events in 2011.

KEY STRATEGIC ISSUES UPDATE As identified in the Business Plan for 2010, these issues provided general direction for the Chamber for the next three to five years and addressed every major area of the Chamber’s mission and core value statements and business environment. Progress has been significant in the past year.
