ast September, during the kind of drenching rainstorm that signals the end of summer, I was invited to a small practice space below Warpaint Clothing Company in the Plaza District to witness the “Awakening” of The Pretty Black Chains. The group had just completed its first album, “Ceremonies,” but it was clear from the sentiment and the sound coming from the band that evening that “Ceremonies” was a memorial service for the group that The Pretty Black Chains were just a few months before, and the band was now prepared to become something else and something greater. I first met Kellen McGugan, Derek Knowlton, Jonathan Chuck Martin and Kurt Freudenberger two years ago when they first appeared on “Static,” and I quickly got used to the idea that the band is constantly five moves ahead of what they might be playing in public, continually absorbing new sounds, pushing forward like a long-distance runner who puts in 30 miles so he will be so much better when he has to run just 26.2. I loved the music on “Ceremonies,” particularly “19 6-4” and “Ambulance,” because they arrived so fully formed in their Britpop-inspired perfection and because they inspired such frenzy at PBC shows. I also knew that the band could not possibly play those songs forever; that stylistic parameters were for other, lesser groups. Knowlton, in particular, was ready for something greater.

Always a riffmaster at heart, the guitarist had spent the last several months studying Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, and that constant rush of words from his mouth (anyone who spends time around The Pretty Black Chains is familiar with this phenomenon) was evidence of his enthusiasm. The proof came when the band’s expansive new approach reverberated through that small space. They were ready for that upcoming opening slot with The Smashing Pumpkins. They were ready for a whole lot more. This brings me to “Awakening,” The Pretty Black Chains’ new album. The difference is like comparing the Yardbirds’ 1967 album with Page, “Little Games,” to what would appear two years later on the first Led Zeppelin album. Muscular riffology is matched by expert songcraft on “Lovers,” “Wicked Ways” and the epic “Color of a Tomb”; McGugan continues to amaze with the breadth of his vocals, and Martin and Freudenberger back it all up with power and grace. It is clear that in a relatively short time, The Pretty Black Chains achieved the kind of evolution it takes other bands years to accomplish, if the sound they hear in their heads is ever truly translated by their hands and their voices. I am so proud of this band, and I am honored that they thanked me in the liner notes. And chances are, as improbable as it sounds, they are already five moves ahead of “Awakening.”

Opportunities abound for local artists SXSW is another chance for local artists to showcase their talent to a larger audience

S

ix years ago my musical prowess got scissor-kicked in the headphones. I was sitting in my Putnam City North history class while dreaming up ideas for pep assemblies and figuring out cool things I could say to Sam Bradford if I passed him in the hallway. Out of nowhere, a fellow student handed me a burned CD-R with the words “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.” The Flaming Lips album not only linked me to idea of Oklahoma music being extraordinary but also jumpstarted my interest in local artists. It took one band to open my eyes to songs that weren’t being played on the radio. I’m seeing more opportunities for Oklahomans to notice the same thing. Last month Greyson Chance played a couple charity gigs in Edmond, and singer/songwriter Sherree Chamberlain opened for him. I spoke to her about the gigs, which weren’t her typical show in a cramped venue or local bar. She brought up the idea of how silly it would have been for her to decline playing based on indie credibility. Chamberlain made a smart move and played to one of her biggest crowds to date. She even sold a few dozen albums and got enough money to replace a guitar that was stolen from her. The most interesting thing Chamberlain said about opening for Chance was her songs having the potential to change someone who only has Taylor Swift on their IPod. Think about it. It’s not a huge jump from Swift to Sherree, but it could open a lot of musical outlets for a listener. I’ve shot video for The Pretty Black Chains while they were opening for Smashing Pumpkins and 311. Those acts are amazingly mainstream and attracted sold-out crowds. The hugs, handshakes and autographs I saw at the Chains’ merchandise booth after the show was enough to fuel my local music hope for years. I don’t believe in indie credibility or any attitude that involves not sharing new music or ideas. I do believe everybody starts somewhere and opportunities come to those who are generous and, more importantly, hard working. After a week, people will forget who’s opening for who and a show is often just a show. Making a link, now that’s important. Now it will be a matter of choosing how many I can see. I often hear advice from others about SXSW. They stress that I should see bands I can’t normally see at home. I think this year I’ll ignore that advice.

Shows to see or not to see: MARCH 20: Reading Rainbow is an indie two-piece hailing from Philadelphia. It’s hard to ignore the band’s adorable factor. Rainbow is in its name and the duo happens to be married. Regardless, you should focus on the sonic melodies and gorgeous punk tunes Reading Rainbow makes. If that sounds too sweet for you, Stillwater-based rockers Colourmusic are headlining. They’ll bring the mean. @ Opolis, 113 N Crawford Ave., Norman MARCH 22: It’s pretty obvious what a showcase named Acoustic Oklahoma features. However, the level of talent at these free, allages shows is growing. Even more impressive is that several musicians participate and it’s a different group every week. Videographer Casey Friedman hosts and brings enough enthusiasm to fill three venues. A true Irish party MOST ST. PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATIONS IN THE ARE ABOUT GREEN BEER, BEADS AND SHAMROCKS. NOT THE CASE AT SEAN CUMMINGS IRISH PUB.

L

et’s call a shamrock a shamrock: St. Patrick’s Day in the United States is pretty much just about partying. We love the green beer, the beads in the shape of shamrocks and the parades that flood the streets all across the country. There’s a ton of events going on in Oklahoma City this year, including the St. Patrick’s Day cruise on the Oklahoma River, the Bricktown St. Patrick’s Day Block Party and of course the parties at dozens of Irish pubs in the metro. We’ve got James E. McNellie’s, Dan O’Brien’s, Fox & Hound, Henry Hudson’s, and my favorite: Sean Cumming’s Irish Pub. It’s located on North May in a nondescript shopping center. The outside doesn’t look like much, but when you enter you feel like you’ve been transported to a European pub. There’s lots of wood and it’s very dark. Traditional Irish bands come in and play often. The bar is my favorite part. It’s bronze, but only because the bar top is made with pennies. The St. Patrick’s Day celebrations tend to be large at this Irish pub and since Sean Cummings knows how to put on a true Irish party, I thought I’d ask him some of the Irish traditions that go along with the culture. What are some traditional Irish food dishes? Sean Cummings: The real deal in traditional Irish food is eating seafood. It’s surrounded by an ocean and most people don’t realize that. Fishermen stew. Fisherman’s — that kind of stuff. Corned beef and cabbage? Not Irish. It’s actually American, and it was given to the Irish workers by the Jewish merchants in New York and they were just trying to give them something cheap to eat, and it became an American obsession. In Ireland they’ll serve it now, but it’s not traditionally authentic Irish. What I really found is that most everywhere has pork, because you can raise them in such a small area.

What’s a traditional Irish drink? Sean Cummings: Guinness is more well known than the country of Ireland. Guinness is supposed to be poured at 40 degrees. It’s not supposed to be poured at 33 to 35. What happens is the colder it is, the more bitter it is. This is the No. 1 traditional drink as well as whiskey. What about Irish Car Bombs? Sean Cummings: In Ireland, you’d never order an Irish Car Bomb because people wouldn’t know how to take it. Irish Car Bombs are about half a Guinness with half a shot of baileys and have a shot of whiskey. They’re probably our No. 1 drink other than beer or whiskey. Do people in Ireland really wear green on St. Patrick’s Day? Sean Cummings: The Irish just wear green to show they’re from Ireland. We [at Sean Cummings Pub] don’t do the green beer. We do the Guinness which is about as Irish as it’s going to get. Have some fun with it though. We don’t care. What is a weird Irish tradition that caught your eye? Sean Cummings: Here’s something embarrassing. We went to Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, and found out they go to church. They might have a little bit of a parade and then they have a family dinner. It’s almost like Christmas. Sean Cummings Irish Restaurant and Pub will open at 11 a.m. on St. Patrick’s Day with eight bands throughout the day. They take over Vito’s Ristorante next door as well. There’s a private bar out back. He said to get there early to get a table. The wait usually starts at 11:15. So as you enjoy the Irish holiday, remember: “It is better to spend money like there’s no tomorrow than to spend tonight like there’s no money!” Say that toast in Ireland and you’re sure to fit right in.

A burlesque resurgence has hit after-hours success in Oklahoma City

S

howgirls rarely show at Oklahoma’s plentiful casinos — they’re even becoming a rarity in Las Vegas where, in the 1950s and 1960s, nearly every casino boasted signature shows featuring beautiful, tall showgirls adorned in feathered headpieces, revealing and sometimes topless costumes and strategically placed giant fans. But showgirls are enjoying newfound popularity in Oklahoma City as a burlesque resurgence sweeps the nation. Oklahoma Showgirls, The Teaze Pole Team and 7 Deadly Sins Burlesque Revue, three local dance troupes that perform a variety of burlesque-style acts, are finding after-hours success in OKC. Lynn Crowe-Simon, owner of Teaze Dance and Fitness, a dance studio in downtown Oklahoma City, started the Oklahoma Showgirls and The Teaze Pole Team within the last two years. “There are just a few of us doing something in burlesque, but all of us who are doing something are very different in what we offer, which is kind of nice,” she said. Between these different groups, you’ll find just about every kind of burlesque act imaginable. Tierney James of 7 Deadly Sins, who is also known as Eva Aphrodisia, does a traditional fan dance, in which she strips down to nearly nothing. “Obviously, we’re stripping,” James said of the performances of 7 Deadly Sins. “No one’s going to try and be like ‘Oh, no, that’s not what’s going on here.” Oklahoma Showgirls are a different kind of burlesque dance troupe. Instead of performing individual acts, they usually perform choreographed group numbers in a variety of genres. They do French cancan, 1920s Charleston, traditional 1950s burlesque, 1960s go-go and Las Vegas showgirl routines. They wear elaborate costumes such as tuxedo corsets or dress as sailor girls or Grecian goddesses. At a holiday event in 2010, they performed a roller skating routine wearing Santa dresses. “We love to perform at themed events and we’ll go to great lengths to make exquisite costumes and choreographed dances to match that event’s theme,” Crowe-Simon said. The Teaze Pole Team delivers something else entirely: a performance STORY CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

based on physical agility. “The pole team is a lot different than the stereotypical pole dancing that most of the public thinks of,” she said. “These ladies are doing acrobatics and aerial art from the top of the pole as a beautiful form of dance and exhibition of strength. It’s really a jaw dropping experience to see them perform.” Crowe-Simon said her ultimate goal is to get her showgirl acts booked in Oklahoma casinos. “Casinos and showgirls go together like bread and butter,” she said. But Crowe-Simon and James agree that burlesque has a strong femaleempowerment element. “Hopefully, it defines feminity and sex appeal in kind of a different way. I think that’s why we don’t feel it’s demeaning because it’s completely on our own terms,” James said. James said she suffers from social anxiety disorder, and she finds that performing burlesque gives her a sense of power and order that she doesn’t find in other areas of her life. “Once I get up there, it’s totally what I’ve planned to do...” James said. “I orchestrated this entire thing. It’s like I’m the puppet master of everything that’s going to happen in the next five minutes.” “It’s about learning how to feel comfortable in your body and exude sort of a sexy attitude,” Crowe-Simon said. “I call it ‘Be a Goddess,’ because it’s all about us getting comfortable with feeling confident with ourselves.”

‘L ASERS’ – LUPE FIASCO

L

upe Fiasco’s “Lasers” offers proof that rappers who either cannot or will not crank out obvious hits will get yanked back in line or dropped completely. The Chicago rapper’s third album sat on the shelf at Atlantic Records for nearly two years, but the final results sound like two competing aesthetics — a socially and politically conscious album jockeying for position with a collection of glittery poprap. “Lasers” is the sound of Fiasco getting yanked back in line. Case in point: The first single, “The Show Goes On,” owes much of its appeal to an in-your-face sample of Modest Mouse’s “Float On” — it’s catchy but disconcertingly slight, and while Fiasco clearly gets in some digs at Atlantic for putting “chains” on his soul, the tone soon gets turned toward uplift and beating the odds. The old, forceful Fiasco can be heard on the opening “Words I Never Said,” but the music contains none of the inventive fire that fueled songs such as “Kick, Push” from 2006’s “Food & Liquor” or “Superstar” on 2007’s “The Cool.” He fares far better in his collaboration with Self’s Matt Mahaffey on “State Run Radio,” in which he’s clearly straining at his newly fitted pop straitjacket, and the social fantasy “All Black Everything,” but it’s hard to imagine Fiasco going along with the Trey Songz-accentuated “Out of My Head” without a fight. Calling “Never Forget You” a John Legend collaboration might be a stretch, because it sounds like a castoff Legend track with a Fiasco rap grafted onto it. Here’s hoping he got paid well, but if this disappointing final version of “Lasers” was born out of duress, Fiasco needs to find a new corporate home and get back to “The Cool.” — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor LOOKATOKC.COM

‘21’ – ADELE

A

dele Atkins became the brightest light of Britain’s Northern Soul resurgence when she proved better equipped for the rigors of fame than Amy Winehouse, but the more apt comparison would be Allison Moyet, the brassy British soul belter who first came to prominence in the 1980s with Yazoo. Like Moyet, Atkins has a seemingly bottomless reserve of passion and feeling that can transcend even trite material, and on her second album, “21,” she finds herself in that unfortunate quandary more than a few times. First the good news: “21” has plenty of songs worthy of Adele’s voice, most of which she co-wrote with Florence & the Machine collaborator Paul Epworth. The lead track and single, “Rolling in the Deep,” is a soul/blues barn burner propelled by a simple piano-drum-choir arrangement that gives Adele’s soaring vocals a killer showcase. Epworth helps Adele scale similar heights on the 1970s-style R&B of “He Won’t Go” and the horn-spiked “I’ll Be Waiting,” both of which give Adele organic musical backdrops and plenty of room to emote. But not all of Adele’s collaborations go so well, especially when she is allowed to drift toward the middle of the road. Her work with former Tulsan Ryan Tedder (of The Fray) on “Rumour Has It” and “Turning Tables” sounds maddeningly generic, and her songs with former Semisonic leader Dan Wilson are a mixed bag: “Don’t You Remember?” veers into formulaic power-balladry, but Wilson and Adele correct course on “One and Only,” reveling in formidable gospel-blues. Naming albums for the age she was during recording is a great way to chart Adele’s maturation, and while “21” does not improve across the board on 2008’s “19,” it should still make listeners marvel at what this gifted singer will be accomplishing on “29” or “31.” — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

Break out the fedoras for ‘Adjustment Bureau’

B

eware of men in sharp suits and snappy fedoras. They just might be efficient and officious agents of The Big Boss, assigned to keep us on fate’s straight and narrow path and prevent us from straying into the thorny thickets of free will. That’s the core idea behind “The Adjustment Bureau,” a smart if occasionally wobbly amalgam of thriller, love story and science-fiction conjecture extrapolated from a very short 1954 story by sci-fi guru Philip K. Dick. Screenwriter and first-time director George Nolfi (“The Sentinel”) deftly incorporates the core idea of Dick’s speculative story (that our destinies are tightly scripted and controlled by a behind-the-scenes cadre of spiffily tailored, hat-wearing bureaucrats working for some unspecified big-brother power) and weaves it into a star-crossed love story with headlong chase sequences and subtly sinister thriller undertones. Despite carrying a heavy load of thematic freight and projecting an uncertain tone, the story trips along lightly, thanks to Nolfi’s minimalist approach to special effects that turns New York City into a mind-bending M.C. 30 Rockefeller Center, Yankee Stadium, the Statue of Liberty and more. And stars Matt Damon and Emily Blunt as the accidental lovers turn in nice, naturalistic performances that conjure up some pretty potent and engaging romantic chemistry. The story opens with a meet-cute encounter in a men’s room, where Damon’s brash politico David Norris, just defeated in a close congressional race, runs into Blunt’s beguiling ballet dancer Elise Sellas, who is hiding out after crashing a wedding party. Sparks fly immediately, but skulking around the edges of this love-at-first-sight pairing is a shadowy gang of buttoned-down men in fedoras, led by the no-nonsense Richardson (“Mad Men’s” John Slattery) and his furtively sympathetic underling, Harry (Anthony Mackie). In a brisk series of narrative strokes, we learn that these guys are metaphysical operatives of The Adjustment Bureau (“We are the people who make sure that things go according to plan,” Richardson says), that David and Elise’s meeting was a mistake due to Harry’s tardiness, and that in order to set the lover’s fates back on course (David toward a presidential bid; Elise toward international acclaim as a choreographer) the two must never

LOOKATOKC.COM

cross paths again. To emphasize the point, Richardson gives David a peek behind the bureaucratic curtain and informs him that if he attempts to see Elise again, “We’ll erase your brain.” Naturally, love and free will are not to be held to fate’s rigid rules, and David defies the bureau and goes in search of Elise. This sets up an ominous intervention by the bureau’s big cheese, Thompson (an imposing Terence Stamp), and the film’s second half turns into a frantic, physics-defying chase as David persuades the disbelieving Elise to follow him on a desperate dash toward love. Damon, filmdom’s quintessential Everyman, and Blunt, quirky, sexy and irreverent, are an engaging enough pair to make us overlook most of the story’s gaping plot holes and its too glib treatment of some pretty hefty thematic issues (theological, philosophical and practical). But as a light, winning entertainment that piques our curiosity, doesn’t insult our intelligence and delivers a satisfying romance wrapped in pleasant thrills and a cosmic conundrum, “The Adjustment Bureau” gives us just cause to doff our fedoras. —Dennis King, Wimgo.com

‘Rango’ is good fun for adults, children

T

he character and background designs in the first animated feature from George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic appear to have been inspired by the unsettling grotesquerie of Ralph Steadman’s cartoons, which illustrated quite effectively the drug- and alcoholfueled “Fear and Loathing” reportage of the late gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson in the pages of Rolling Stone. In fact, the title character of “Rango” vaguely resembles Thompson somehow, albeit in the form of a chameleon with an asymmetrically-shaped head, crooked pencil-thin neck, frightfully bulging eye sockets and pinpoint irises. He is wearing a Hawaiian-print shirt, though, which Thompson often favored. And our hero even speaks with the voice of Johnny Depp, who portrayed the gun-toting scribe in the film version of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” But the star and filmmakers have stated publicly that any resemblance Rango bears to Thompson, living or dead, is purely coincidental. In fact, this nervous, chronic liar of a lizard owes more of an inspirational debt

to the kind of pop-eyed wreck of a character Don Knotts played so well in such vehicles as “The Shakiest Gun in the West.” Working from a hilariously quirky and inventive script by John Logan (“Gladiator,” “The Last Samurai”), Gore Verbinski, who’s directed Depp in three “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, fashions an homage to — and a poke at — the mythos created by the spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone. Rango is a sheltered family pet doomed to forever “blend in,” as most chameleons do, which is at the root of his raging identity crisis and his burning ambition to be an actor. When a highway mishap during a longdistance move leaves him stranded in the middle of the desert, he ends up in the gritty, lawless town of Dirt, which is populated by all manner of creatures furry and scaly, walking and crawling, great and small. The town suffers from a severe shortage of water, and its citizens live in mortal fear of a hungry hawk that is constantly circling overhead. The mayor of Dirt (voiced by Ned Beatty), a rotund turtle bearing a strong resemblance to John Huston as Noah Cross in “Chinatown,” seems a bit sinister himself, and full of shady secrets. When Rango, who’s been affecting false swagger, acci-

dentally does in the hawk, the critter citizens believe the less-than-courageous chameleon is really the hero he’s been claiming to be and promptly elect him sheriff. And Rango soon finds himself hopelessly outgunned by the crooked mayor, his evil rattlesnake henchman (Bill Nighy) and a large gang of cutthroat outlaws. It all seems too much for our wretched reptilian protagonist, who finally turns his long skinny tail and runs, until he encounters an all-too-familiar figure — the embodiment of the Spirit of the West — who persuades our hero his only shot at salvation is to rejoin the fray and redeem himself in his own eyes and those of his new lady love, Beans (Isla Fisher), she of very large eyes and unknown animal species. The gritty photographic realism and deep detail of this film’s artwork is fairly amazing to behold, and while it’s hard to determine the age range of “Rango’s” target audience, as the weirdness and humor seem more suitable to adults than children, it’s a story of good heart with messages of courage, determination and teamwork in the face of enormous adversity that people of all ages would do well to consider. And it’s also a lot of fun.

‘Battle: Los Angeles’ all about war with aliens

attle: Los Angeles” might be the first alien invasion film in which the plot barely hinges on aliens. Allegorical stories fill the annals of science fiction, especially the movies that arrived during the height of the nuclear scare, but “Battle: Los Angeles” is simply a film about Marines dealing with a formidable, unpredictable enemy — the fact that the enemy arrives in spaceships and looks like a human central nervous system on legs seems like an afterthought. Unexpected as it might seem, this film is a strong acting showcase for Aaron Eckhart, who gives an intense and thoughtful performance as Staff Sgt. Michael Nantz, a Marine who started his career in Kuwait and, in classic disaster movie form, thinks he is retiring after serving in three wars. Shortly after Nantz signs his papers, giant spaceships begin appearing over major

metropolitan areas, and they do not come in peace. What these alien forces want, and appear to be pumping out of the ocean at an alarming rate, is the Earth’s water supply. They are here to colonize, so they are wiping out the indigenous population. Nantz is assigned to Lt. William Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez, the new Bosley in ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels” reboot), who is fresh out of Officer Candidate School, and they lead a team of Marines and one Air Force technical sergeant (Michelle Rodriguez) through the ruins of Los Angeles, rescuing civilians and fighting off the invaders. “Battle: Los Angeles” will probably disappoint fans of the Roland Emmerich-led “blow up the monuments” sci-fi subgenre, mainly because it is far more concerned with how Marines might respond to an invasion and how they might bring their on-the-ground experience to that assignment. Eckhart’s Nantz brings the baggage of a full career to his new assignment, and his troops are

LOOKATOKC.COM

extremely aware of a particular blight on his war record involving several Marines who died on his watch. Eckhart plays Nantz as a man who carries all that in his mind and wears it on his face. One key scene in which Nantz confronts those demons ranks with some of Eckhart’s best work. Additionally, director Jonathan Liebesman delivers a truly hair-raising scene in which a young Marine finds himself hemmed in by aliens in an abandoned apartment complex. But the on-screen warfare plays havoc with the plotting and pacing, which means that the bulk of the film consists of protracted battle sequences that often diminish the emotional pull that Eckhart and Ramon Rodriguez bring to it. At its best, “Battle: Los Angeles” feels like “Black Hawk Down” with aliens, but then, as it does so often in real conflicts, reason and coherence get lost in the fog of war. — George Lang, LookatOKC editor

When he’s in front of the camera, Eckhart said during a one-on-one interview, he brings the same level of effort to both big and small films — an attitude he

came by the hard way. “I really don’t differentiate,” Eckhart said, relaxing in jeans and a sweater at Casa del Mar in Santa Monica. “In terms of budgets and all that sort of stuff, that really has no effect on my job. My job is to be real. For example, ‘Battle: LA’ has deaths in it, and ‘Rabbit Hole’ has deaths in it. I treat both deaths the same. I treat my character as a real person who has issues, has impediments, has flaws. You know, I’m paid to give the best, fullest performance I possibly can.” Eckhart’s philosophy is not exactly carved in stone on Hollywood Boulevard. Plenty of actors keep one foot in the indie film world while pulling a breadwinning paycheck in summer explosion epics. The second-string cast in blockbusters can often look like the front row at the Independent Spirit Awards: actors taking a small role in a big film to finance a big role in a small film. But Eckhart, 43, said the effort he throws into playing the bereaved father in John Cameron Mitchell’s “Rabbit Hole” is matched by his emotional investment in Staff Sgt. Michael Nantz, the nearly retired soldier who must lead troops against an alien insurgency in “Battle: Los Angeles.” “In ‘Rabbit Hole,’ you’re going in, and the actors and crew are invested in a low-budget film with very intense subject matter,” S E E STORY ON NE XT PAG E

he said. “It’s inherent that you’re going to be working in a very intimate, a very deep way. So you don’t have to convince anybody that you’re going to be serious. Here, over here (in ‘Battle: LA’), people take it a little less seriously, and that is the challenge. “Now you have a larger crew, it’s a popcorn movie, it’s a studio, it’s a big budget, you’re dealing with aliens,” Eckhart said. “And so, even while in my heart and in my mind there is no difference, I still have to be as full in this movie as I was in that movie, or try to be.” In terms of building this all-encompassing work ethic, Eckhart said he took a lesson from his co-star in 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” Heath Ledger. The film was that increasingly rare animal in Hollywood: a big-budget “tentpole” release garnering near-universal critical raves. Eckhart saw Ledger becoming fully immersed in his performance as the Joker, and it inspired him not just to give his all as Harvey Dent but to strive for excellence in all projects, big or small. “You look over and you see Heath, and then what do you do? He didn’t phone it in. He gives one of his greatest performances, and that’s because Heath took it deadly seriously,” Eckhart said. “I look at that and I say, ‘Well, here I am in this movie, and I always want to do the same thing.’ “ And so it goes with Eckhart’s Nantz, a battle-hardened Marine who recognizes that his stamina and commitment are not what they used to be after 20 years in the uniform and service in three wars. When a predatory alien force arrives to wipe out humanity and plunder Earth’s resources, Nantz must lead a team that is wary of his war record, including an incident in which many soldiers lost their lives. In a key scene that explicates Nantz’ commitment to both his current troops and the men he lost overseas, Eckhart recites the names, ranks and serial numbers of the deceased in a show of fealty and remembrance. It was a scene that was added halfway through the filming of “Battle: LA,” and Eckhart said he worked hard to find the right tone of reverence. “I went to Afghanistan on a USO tour, so it was important to me that these numbers meant something, that they have faces, that they are cared about,” he said. “So when the armed forces see this, they’ll say, ‘That’s right.’ And then when the audience that doesn’t have any relationship with the armed forces sees it, they’ll see that these are individuals, they have families, and each death sends out concussion waves around the world. We mourn every death. It’s important to <<<

us, and I felt that it was important to the character, too.” Ultimately, Eckhart said, the presence of aliens is almost incidental. In his assessment, “Battle: Los Angeles” is a movie about soldiers in the heat of battle, and the enemy just happens to be extraterrestrial. “I never thought of aliens,” he said. “I always thought of this as a war movie. We made this in a documentary style, and I feel like we achieved that kind of intensity.” Intensity characterized Eckhart’s first major role, playing a misogynistic whitecollar worker enacting a revenge scenario against a randomly selected female co-worker in 1997’s “In the Company of Men,” the feature film debut by Eckhart’s Brigham Young University classmate Neil LaBute. That role led to acclaimed performances in “Erin Brockovich” and “Thank You for Smoking,” but Eckhart said he also took a number of roles for all the wrong reasons, which led to a major career reassessment. “I haven’t found who I am until just recently, and that’s 13 years into it. I did a few movies that ... just were ridiculous,” he said. “I thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore, I don’t even know who I am, I’m betraying my craft, I’m not putting any of my own personality into these movies, there’s no reason for me to do these movies, I’m doing them for the wrong reason.’ And I said, that’s it for me, and I changed. “It takes guts to do what you want in this business, because what if it doesn’t work? ‘I can’t pass up this opportunity,’ or ‘The money’s too good here,’ or ‘This other dude’s going to take it.’ Sooner or later, you have to just get all those out of the equation and say, ‘Who am I and what do I want to say?’ “ Eckhart said. “It’s only very recently, in the last two or three years, that I’ve been able to establish that, and this movie is one that begins that odyssey.” The next films Eckhart said will display this commitment will be “The Rum Diary,” based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel, and “The Expatriate,” in which he plays a former CIA agent on the run with his daughter. Eckhart said it just feels different to be taking projects for the right reasons, and he thinks it shows in his performances. “I feel the difference when I’m acting. I’m more invested in what I’m doing in a real way,” he said. “It’s much more important to me that we get it right.” Travel and accommodations provided by Sony. LOOKATOKC.COM

DRAGON AGE II

I

DEVELOPER: EA PRICE: $59.99 PLATFORMS: XBox 3, PlayStation 3, PC

If you think U.S. politics has gotten ugly, wait until you’ve spent some time in the city of Kirkwall. The Templars want to subjugate the mages. The priests of the Chantry don’t trust the brutish Qunari. The Dalish elves want to avoid humans altogether. Take this stew of suspicion and corruption and stir in hundreds of desperate Fereldan refugees, refu on the run from the demonic Darkspawn spa that have overrun their homeland. Even Ev without the dragons, ogres and giant spiders lurking in the wilderness, Kirkwall spi isn’t isn exactly the Emerald City. It is the setting for “Dragon Age II” (Electronic (E Arts, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation tio 3, PC, $59.99), the latest role-playing adventure ad from the masters at BioWare. And A it’s radically different from the bucolic landscapes associated with epic fantasy la since “The Lord of the Rings.” Some RPG s fans f will find Kirkwall claustrophobic, but you y can sense mysterious, often nefarious doings behind every door — a feeling any d urban dweller will recognize. u The protagonist — also referred to as “the Champion” — is Hawke, and you can play as either a man or a woman. (Since I chose female, I’ll refer to Hawke as “her.”) c

You can start as a warrior, a mage or a rogue, and as you gain experience, you can evolve into a berserker, a healer, an assassin or one of six other job classes. Hawke’s initial goals are to find a new home for her mother and to protect her sister, a mage, from the Templars. As Hawke’s power and influence grow, she attracts an entourage of lively characters, with their own problems and ambitions. Anders (who returns from last year’s “Awakening”) is a mage who’s struggling to control the vengeance demon inside his head. Isabela is a saucy pirate who yearns to return to the high seas. Merrill is a wistful elf who’s alienated from her clan. There are about 800

more stories in this naked city, and almost all of them are intriguing. Most of the story is told through dialogue, and the way Hawke responds to friends, rivals and other Kirkwall denizens influences the course of the game. You usually have three ways to respond — polite, sarcastic or stern — but the choices don’t always break down that simply. And you cannot approach every conversation the same way; Isabela may enjoy your sense of humor, but that doesn’t make it appropriate at a funeral. Of course, there are thousands of enemies, human and otherwise, to battle, and BioWare has tweaked combat to make it feel smoother and more immediate. You control one fighter while the computer controls your three companions, but you can switch between bodies at any time. Get your mages, rogues and warriors synched and you can really dole out the damage. “Dragon Age II” is somewhat of a creative gamble for BioWare; shifting the typically sprawling role-playing genre into a relatively confined urban milieu is bound to leave some fans grumbling. But while it’s grittier and less grandiose, it’s still an epic drama, and the journey is very rewarding. Four stars out of four. - By The Associated Press

eaving the 18 to 34 demographic can be depressing. It’s an acknowledgment of reaching middle age. A reminder that we’re no longer desirable. We’re simply out of style. That is unless you’re a restaurant. Few restaurants survive for a decade. Fewer survive a quarter century. Surviving a quarter century plus a decade is camel-through-the-eye-of-a-needle territory, which is where Old Germany Restaurant now resides. Old Germany not only overcame the already long

odds of the industry but the added obstacles of a remote location and a style of food with little local advocacy. We might call the long-term growth and success of a tavern and cafe in the boonies the result of German engineering, but Mike Turek calls it a simple family restaurant. What started as a tiny burger joint with a single German dish has grown into a full-service restaurant with multiple dining areas, expansive German beer and wine lists while launching the state’s biggest Oktoberfest celebration. More growth is

Above left, a selection of wine and desserts available at Old Germany in Choctow. Above right, schnitzel is one of the most popular dishes available at Old Germany. Schnitzel is a cutlet, made of chicken, pork or beef and is battered and fried. Photos by Jim Beckel, The Oklahoman

cutlet, battered and fried. The cutlet can be chicken, pork or beef. But there’s a great chance you’re familiar with the term Wiener schnitzel. Be advised, Wiener schnitzel is NOT a hot dog. Der Wiener schnitzel, noted for A-frame buildings and coneys, has been creating this confusion from California to Texas and all Southern states between since 1961. Wiener simply means Viennese in German. The term for Viennese evolved into hot dog thanks to the popularity of Viennese sausages. Vienna sausages are still popular between buns and even have a place on shelves shoulder-toshoulder with the potted meat family. Austria is the birthplace of schnitzel. In Vienna it’s pounded veal battered in breadcrumbs and pan-fried. The only thing missing to make this a chickenfry is cream gravy. But if you like gravy, Old Germany serves several smothered schnitzels such as Schnitzel with Cream Sauce, Jager Schnitzel and Zigeuner Schnitzel, also called Huntersteak. The gravies vary from Swiss steak-like tomatoes and bell peppers to decadent cream-based sauces seasoned with various ingredients such as mushrooms, peppercorns or paprika. Sausage is one of the greatest contributions ever made to mankind, but it took the same lineage that gave us

Bavarian Motor Works and MercedesBenz to make the best of wurst. If you were to join Turek on one of his annual wine tours of Germany, you might be faced with having to choose among some 1,500 items that end in wurst. Old Germany offers charbroiled or smoked Bratwurst, Knackwurst, Chicken-Apple Bratwurst, Chicken Cordon Bleu Bratwurst, Nuernberger Bratwurst, Wiener Wurst and Curry Wurst. Old Germany makes its own sausage called Cevapcici, which are small beef sausages derived from a Yugoslavian recipe. All members of the wurst family commingle with mustard — brown, never yellow, with perhaps a blast of horseradish. If all this sounds too heavy, Old Germany also offers grilled versions of the schnitzels. The menu also includes sauerbraten, a variety of rye breads, sauerkraut, homemade German potato salad, fried potatoes, red cabbage, potato dumplings and spaetzle/ Old Germany has 10 German beers on tap and about 100 German wines. While the wines are excellent, the German people went to so much trouble to perfect beer that it really seems rude not to have at least one.

Burgers to bratwurst On Aug. 19, 1973 the family from Bad Soden became Oklahomans. Heinz bounced between odd jobs before landing work at a manufacturing plant. That only lasted until Dec. 23, 1975. Christmas spirit was sparse under the Tannenbaum, but the greatest gift for the Tureks was just a few months away and waiting for them on SE 29 near Indian Meridian. That’s where Alfred Panek decided he’d had enough of burgers, burritos and corn dogs. So, he offered Heinz Turek the opportunity to take over his little operation next to the Root-nScoot for $200 a month — up front. For that amount, he got use of the equipment to carry forth the established menu plus an option to buy in five years. The Tureks had $300 left in the bank and used two-thirds of it to pay the first month’s lease and the last $100 for supplies. The only change to the menu was adding Wiener schnitzel. March 1, 1976, Old Germany was born and within 18 months the menu evolved to all German cuisine. In 1985, a front dining room was added to bump the original 33-seat capacity to 80. In 1991, a cavernous wine cellar room was built, pushing capacity to 125.

With it’s new capacity and Mike becoming general manager, plans were made to host an Oktoberfest celebration in fall ‘91. The idea was to hoist a big tent in the field west of the restaurant and host a full-scale Oktoberfest with traditional dishes, German beer, music and dancing. But on June 1 of that year, Heinz Turek’s journey — which began in Hirschberg, Germany — came to an end at age 59. The loss of the family patriarch only emboldened the family resolve. The show did go on as planned that fall, and Oktoberfest has been an annual Choctaw event ever since, growing from about 1,200 folks that first year to about 40,000 a year in Choctaw Creek Park and under the Hardin Pavilion. Oktoberfest will expand in its 21st incarnation. “It’s gonna be two weekends this year,” Turek said. “It’s a little more work, but I think it’ll spread out the crowds and make it not quite so hectic.” Before Oktoberfest begins, the Tureks hope to open Schmitt’s and Giggle’s, which will be operated by Georg Turek, Mike’s older brother. The bar will be built out of the north dining room and offer beverages ranging from cappuccino to German beer to martinis with a heavy appetizer menu. “We’ve had a lot of requests for it,” Turek said. “As more and more people move out here, they don’t want to drive all the way into the city to find a place to have a beer and watch the game.” As the operation has progressed, much has stayed the same at Old Germany. Christel is only retired in theory. She still keeps everyone in line. Georg handles the bar and builds chairs for the restaurant, Jutta is the chef and maestro of the kitchen and Mike handles business operations. Old Germany’s food is mostly derived from a German cookbook that’s more than 100 years old. A scenic drive from Oklahoma City of 20 or 30 minutes seems rather short to experience a true family restaurant paying homage to its culinary roots.

Mutt’s Amazing Hot Dogs set for early May opening The multi-industrial gridlock borne of Oklahoma’s cruel impersonation of Antarctica in February has pushed back the opening of Mutt’s Amazing Hot Dogs. Partner Chris Lower says Taco Twins Cally Johnson and Kathryn Mathis (shown at right) continue working away on recipes, but work on the building won’t allow for opening until early May. Dogs will range from about 4 bucks with occasional rare breedss that might price as high as $12. Word on the street is that duck fat and freshcut potatoes will comingle in bath of hot oil on a more or less consistent basis. Meanwhile, the trio that brought you Big Truck Tacos did unveil the new Mutt’s logo, which is a rendering of the sign that’s been commissioned. You don’t have to be an Okie to pull off this cowgirl chic look — but it helps. And you don’t have to go all out like we did in this photo shoot — but it sure is fun. Take it from Lesta Oliver, owner of Simply Southwest at 1 N Broadway in Edmond. “It’s not for everyone, I realize that. But it’s fun. It makes you feel good; it makes you feel happy. It makes you feel 10 years younger,” she said. This look is all about bold jewelry, soft leather jackets and killer cowboy boots. Add in a full-length full-circle skirt hand-embroidered in beautiful vibrant colors, a buttersoft rawhide shawl or an embellished leather jacket, and you’ve got the complete cowgirl chic package. If you’re not ready to go all in, a few choice pieces can add just the right touch of country to your wardrobe. A stack of silver and copper bracelets on one wrist, a belt embellished with turquoise or a pair of oh-so-sexy snakeskin boots can do the job.
