acey Lett is everywhere. That was the main reason why, when I learned she was returning to Oklahoma City after a year of working for VH1 in New York City, I immediately starting thinking of ways she could be involved in LOOKatOKC. Lacey always manages to land at the epicenter of cool, wherever that might be. And now, she is looking for you. Starting in this issue of LOOKatOKC, on page 8, Lacey is devoting every other issue to examining the personal style of Oklahoma City’s trendsetters. Great style does not necessarily mean swaddling oneself in couture — if you have the means, I highly recommend picking some up — but style is usually more interesting when it happens naturally. Lacey wants to showcase the people who make it look easy. Most of us can learn a lot from these people. In terms of style, the only truly bold move I make on a daily basis is a pair of Ermenegildo Zegna glasses (that’s them in the photo at right) that jump off my face like Swifty Lazar’s spectacles — go to Google Image right now, and come back immediately afterward. See what I mean? Beyond that, I’m in simple jeans and T-shirts, and that’s attributable to having grown up in back-to-back decades that produced some of the greatest fashion disasters of the 20th century. I’m basic because I’ve been the opposite, and it haunts me. But Lacey is looking for people who are fearless — kind of like our cover subject, Matt Damon (page 22), who shapeshifts more than any actor working today (even Christian Bale) and is working with some of the best directors in the business. Bold is beautiful, and with her new approach to the Night Owl column, Lacey is out there, looking for the exclamation points in Oklahoma City’s ongoing style evolution.

The perfect song is out there

I

knew it had been a successful concert weekend because my pen felt too heavy to lift. All nine of my fingers were attached, but my body was beyond tired while I wrote this column. When Aug. 28 rolled around, I was only interested in napping and being in my underwear. I was much like a three-toed sloth that hangs out in the unmentionables department at Macy’s. The three nights leading up to my lazy Sunday were spent trekking across the state going to concert after concert. Indie hard hitters such as Delta Spirit and Cold War Kids were stopping in the state while local bands gathered in Norman for the Dustbowl Arts Market. The shows were fun, exhausting and almost made me wish remnants of Hurricane Irene would make a dramatic shift to Oklahoma to flood my driveway for a week. As my concert-rattled bones did their best to recover, I still felt an overwhelming urge to attend more concerts – especially the headlining show with Mister Heavenly (awesome band consisting of members of Man Man, Modest Mouse and Islands) that was at The Opolis. Instead of heading to Norman again, I stayed home and came up with an idea for a song that I would like to be written. This song realization came to me after succumbing to more than 20 hours of live music in three days and seeing an overwhelmingly positive reaction to shows. There needs to be a song that captures the enthusiasm for what’s happening in our music scene. I know we have a fittingly titled state song and a psychedelic state rock song, but I request a new song. Something that’s able to embody what’s happening in our state. A song that explains the thousands upon thousands who attend Norman Music Festival every year. A track that urges people to support bands even when the weather is disagreeable. A melody that welcomes more musicians to start making new music and empowers people to perform outside of Oklahoma. I don’t know if a single song could sum up what’s happening, but I’m glad to know there are enough good songs being made right now to make me look forward to next weekend.

SHOWS TO SEE, OR NOT TO SEE Aug. 31: Your mission is to put down this issue of LOOKatOKC and immediately plan to see The Dodos performing with The Luyas and Stillwater’s Deerpeople. When The Dodos canceled their Norman show earlier this year I cursed the band’s name, but now they’ve gone and totally redeemed themselves. Plus, the three bands have enough bombastic energy to fuel this heat wave until January. See you there. @Meacham Auditorium, Norman, 900 Asp Ave.

SEPT. 3: OKC’s own Junebug Spade releases its third EP “Extra Virgin Olive Oil” with opening support from The Wurly Birds. Both local acts have released impressive recordings this month and Junebug’s latest effort won’t disappoint. The band’s upbeat tunes not only are a throwback to the catchiest ’90s tunes but also channel a carefree, fun attitude that’s timeless. @Hi Lo, 1221 NW 50th St.

BAND TO WATCH >>> OKC’s Modern Rock Diaries released my favorite local debut of the year. The band’s first effort ,“Great Western Civilization,” departs in several directions within its five-track span, but the band does one thing very well: when it goes for it, it goes big. The EP was crafted at Blackwatch Studios in Norman and boasts a sound that doesn’t feel like it was the group’s first trip to a studio. Keep your eyes and ears on this band.

SEPT. 13: One of the strongest rock releases this year is “Dye It Blonde,” a bratty and beautiful album from Chicago’s Smith Westerns. Normanbased band The Evangelicals are on opening duty and frontman Josh Jones has been hard at work for several months on a follow-up to “The Evening Descends.” More than anything, I’m looking forward to seeing what Jones has up his sleeves. @The Opolis, Norman, 113 N Crawford Ave.

‘LIFE AT BEST’ – ELI YOUNG BAND

E

li Young Band scored its first Top 10 hit with “It’s Always the Love Songs,” and the Texas country quartet comes through with another appealing batch of ballads on its new album “Life at Best.” After finally making “Radio Waves” with its 2008 album “Jet Black & Jealous,” singer/guitarist Mike Eli, guitarist James Young, drummer Chris Thompson and bassist Jon Jones are in their 11th year of making music together without a lineup change - building on that breakthrough with “Life at Best ” The band, which helped pen nine of the new album’s 14 tracks, recently received its first gold certification for the leadoff single “Crazy Girl.” But the unexpectedly tender hit isn’t even the most affecting love song on the new album, which celebrates romance with giddy joy on “On My Way” and “I Love You” and mourns broken relationships in deceptively bouncy fashion on “Every Other Memory” and “The Falling.” Bray native Katrina Elam co-wrote “Say Goodnight,” which sizzles with sensual ardor. Still, the album’s best ballad, opener “Even if It Breaks Your Heart,” isn’t about a man loving a woman but about a musician adoring a dream. The group again delves into the themes of working hard for dreams and living life to the fullest on the anthemic title track, the motivational “Recover” and uplifting “The Fight ” The band pays tribute to father-son ties without getting too sappy on “My Old Man’s Son” and recognizes that everyone has personal demons with the muscular country-rocker “Skeletons.” A regional favorite esteemed for playing dynamic live shows, Eli Young Band will perform Sept. 2 at Choctaw Casino in Grant, Sept. 15 at the Oklahoma State Fair in OKC and Oct. 4 — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer at the Tulsa State Fair. ‘SKYING’ – THE HORRORS

T

he Horrors skip merrily through genres, having started out life as a buzzsaw Goth band in Edward Gorey-style makeup (2007’s “Strange House,” featuring “Sheena is a Parasite”) and then morphing into a shoegaze outfit two years later on the gorgeous, Geoff Barrow-produced “Primary Colours.” They are not merely malleable or evolutionary – The Horrors are quick-change artists, and “Skying” is yet another wild leap, this time into the widescreen, arena-sized new wave of the mid-1980s. The intent becomes evident on the first single, “Still Life,” in which singer Faris Badwan’s voice soars over an ever-expanding arrangement of pounding drums, bigsky synthesizer chords and epic horns. The messianic urgency of the track suggests Simple Minds at their most insistent, circa “Once Upon a Time,” and throughout “Skying,” The Horrors avoid making direct quotes but lovingly evoke Echo and the Bunnymen (“Oceans Burning”), Chameleons U.K. (“Dive In”) and My Bloody Valentine (“Monica Gems”). “Skying” is at its best when it turns the tables halfway through the game, as on “Endless Blue,” which begins with languid, ethereal tones before the band unexpectedly shifts gears into a rousing post-punk anthem – The Horrors can turn on a dime, whether it is a stylistic shift between albums or a sudden change of course in the middle of a song. Badwan’s gift for elastic, emotional vocals is used to great effect on the dramatic ballad “You Said” and the Gothic stomp of “I Can See Through You,” and his roaring delivery on “Dive In” suggests he would have fit in just fine during the era of black trench coats and dry ice. “Skying” is so exacting in its simulation of the alt-rock music of a quarter-century ago, The Horrors could be instrumental in revitalizing the entire aesthetic. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘MUPPETS: THE GREEN ALBUM’

W

ho’d have dreamed such aesthetically savvy modern music acts as Weezer, Alkaline Trio and My Morning Jacket would ever cover the sappy songs of Paul Williams? Well, somebody was hit with that very brainstorm, and its result is not the artistic disaster one might have feared “Muppets: The Green Album” to be. With a uniquely spare yet sparkling arrangement of piano, steel guitar, banjo and electronic effects, My Morning Jacket transforms “Our World” — a potentially saccharine plea for brotherly love from Jim Henson’s 1977 TV holiday special “Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas” — into a dreamy and poignant pop ballad reminiscent of the Moody Blues in their prime. Weezer teams with Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams to create a sunny soundscape where orchestral harps blend beautifully with muted electric guitars — as well as Williams and Rivers Cuomo’s nicely matched voices — on Paul Williams’ Oscarnominated “The Rainbow Connection,” from 1979’s “The Muppet Movie.” And Alkaline Trio pumps punk-pop spunk into “Moving Right Along,” another P. Williams ditty from the same film. But the moments that really get the frog hopping happen on non-Williams compositions such as OK Go’s raucous, rocked-up version of “The Muppet Show Theme,” The Fray’s hilarious reading of the Muppet’s earliest nonsense song “Mahna Mahna,” The Airborne Toxic Event’s dark and edgy, guitar-driven reworking of “Wishing Song,” and a blistering hard-rock take on “Night Life” from Atreyu’s singer-drummer Brandon Saller and Good Charlotte guitarist Billy Martin. And what Muppet tribute would be complete without Kermit’s gentle theme song of tolerance and acceptance, “Bein’ Green,” done with country-tinged acoustic breeziness by singer-songwriter Andrew Bird. This is all an effort to call attention to the upcoming Disney movie “The Muppets,” and it certainly succeeds in setting the proper mood for being green again, in an upbeat, Kermit kind of way. — Gene Triplett, Entertainment Editor

‘DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK’

Rating: R (Violence and terror) Running time: 1 hour, 40 minutes Starring: Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes, Bailee Madison

stars

***

The scares are there in ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’

N

early 40 years after the TV-movie version of “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” became a generation’s benchmark for haunted house chillers, Guillermo Del Toro, the master of baroque horror behind “Cronos” and “Pan’s Labyrinth,” revisits the scares of his youth. So with Del Toro as writer and producer, the new “Dark” spends half its running time on a sinister roll, but some misguided decisions by first-time feature director Troy Nixey diminish the icy, armrestgripping terror. Bailee Madison plays Sally, a precocious but sullen 10-year-old girl whose behavioral issues have her divorced parents playing hot potato with her. Ultimately, she lands with her father, Alex (Guy Pearce), who is refurbishing an ancient Gothic manse in Rhode Island with his girlfriend, Kim (Katie Holmes). Alex’s career is on the skids, and he thinks that an Architectural Digest cover story on the estate will help him sell the property and put him back on top.

Naturally, Alex is distracted and practically monomaniacal in his pursuit of perfection, which means Sally is getting only perfunctory, obligatory attention when she starts hearing voices. The voices are coming from the basement, of course, which was boarded up before Alex discovered a hollow section below the stairwell. They beckon Sally by name, asking her to play with them, and Sally is just lonely enough to go along until their demanding, murderous nature comes to the surface. “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” is set up by an absolutely harrowing prologue in which the original owner, a nature artist in the tradition of John James Audubon, falls prey to the horrible fairy creatures that now bedevil Sally. They are nasty little gnomes with spindly legs, hunched backs and faces resembling mummified monkeys, and the film is extremely effective in its scares until Nixey lets the audience see a little too much of the creatures. Up to that point, when Sally’s only defense against the light-hating beasties is a creepy old lamp and

the flash on an old Polaroid camera, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” is ready to join “The Others” and the original “House on Haunted Hill” in the pantheon of haunted mansion horror films. But then they show their spooky little faces a little too much, and while they are awful little things straight out that same recess of Del Toro’s mind that produced the Pale Man from “Pan’s Labyrinth,” they are far more frightening when seen in split-second attacks. Madison does a nice job as Sally, playing her with the cold, fixed stares and disaffection that can happen when children do not get enough love, but Pearce and Holmes are underserved by the material — Alex and Kim are little more than pawns in a grisly game — and there are plot holes close to the end that are nearly as disturbing as the hole where the creepy beasts live. These elements and Nixey’s second-act suspension of suspense keep “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” from achieving greatness, but along the way, the scares are there, waiting, down in the basement.

The new ‘Fright Night’ has plenty of bite

S

ometimes the original version of a movie is just a rough draft to be perfected later, and yet the default position for so many filmgoers is that the first is always the best. In the case of this new, killer version of “Fright Night,” they would be dead wrong. Director Craig Gillespie’s stylistic and bitingly funny new “Fright Night” uses the 1985 original as its template, but gives its characters and situations more resonance and spark. This “Fright Night” takes place in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Las Vegas, an expanse of sandcolored cookie-cutter houses. Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) is a teenager living with his divorced mother, Jane (Toni Collette). He’s a geek made good, a former Dungeons and Dragons nerd who became just cool enough to attract the beautiful Amy (Imogen Poots) and hang out in a higher social stratum at school.

The immediate problem at Charlie’s school is that the truancy rate is sky-high. Every day, fewer kids are showing up for class, and Charlie’s estranged friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) suggests that their old role-playing buddy is the victim of a vampire. Charlie writes it off as the ravings of a vengeful dork, but the guy who moved in next door, Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell), seems to be a real night owl. Gillespie’s first masterstroke is to get past the mystery, because there’s no question about it: Jerry is a vampire. Furthermore, Charlie knows he’s a vampire, and Jerry knows that Charlie knows. Charlie must make sure that his mother never invites the night beast into their house, and must destroy a guy who’s been doing just fine as a bloodsucking parasite for the past 500 years. Thanks to Marti Noxon, a television writer responsible for 23 episodes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and two key installments of “Mad Men,” the “Fright Night” screenplay is witty and as free of nonsense

LOOKATOKC.COM

as any vampire movie could hope. She incorporates some smart updates. This time around, the magician Peter Vincent (David Tennant of “Doctor Who”) is a high-dollar Vegas charlatan, a combination of Criss Angel and Russell Brand, driven to drink in order to keep the nightmares of his own vampire-infected youth at bay. Farrell’s quirky take on Jerry delivers on the palpable menace and dark comedy needed for such a role. The strong cast delivers Noxon’s lines with wit and energy, and Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl”) goes for a slick, dark tone that acknowledges the current vampire-centric pop culture while driving a stake through the heart of most of it. The first “Fright Night” will live on as a quirky, funny take on mid-1980s horror, but this time, the characters are more fleshed out, the screenplay is more full-blooded, and the film has bite. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘THE GUARD’

Rating: R (Language throughout, sexual situations and violence) Running time: 1 hour, 36 minutes Starring: Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham.

****

‘The Guard’ will keep you laughing for days

T

he Guard” comes armed with a brilliantly played undercurrent of casual hate that becomes more hilarious as the film goes on. Nearly everyone in this comedy of resentment has bones to pick with everyone else, and that cloud of petty prejudice hanging over Connemara, Ireland, makes the foulmouthed and gleefully eccentric Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) one of the few trustworthy souls in this stunningly acerbic comedy. Gerry is a veteran officer in the Garda Siochana, Ireland’s state police force. Portly and ruddy-faced but governed by extraordinary self-confidence, Gerry enjoys regular visits from escort services and occasional LSD adventures. He is like “The Bad Lieutenant,” except Gerry’s not so bad — he’s sort of a filthy uncle with no nephews he can corrupt. Connemara is fairly quiet on an average day, but then FBI Special Agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) arrives to coordinate the interdiction of a cocainesmuggling operation off the Irish coast. He is working with the Garda to apprehend a high-powered Irish drug kingpin (Liam Cunningham), his British co-conspirator

Clive Cornell (Mark Strong) and their staff murderer (David Wilmot) before they can distribute the halfbillion dollars worth of coke. Gerry has a way with people: His first encounter with Everett is a torrential litany of tossed-off prejudicial jabs, but it just seems like a blunt hammer in Gerry’s awesome set of investigatory tools, and Everett becomes intrigued by the hulking blatherer who he suspects to be a secret genius. Gerry can sling an epithet, but he might just be the least prejudiced character in “The Guard.” In his world, people who speak Gaelic hate English speakers, Galway residents think of Dublin as a cesspool of social diseases and end-of-days depravity, and the criminals don’t hate cops because they are opponents — they hate the kind of people who become members of the Garda. If this air of contempt smells familiar, that’s because it is a family recipe. Writer-director John Michael McDonagh is the brother of Martin McDonagh, the enormously gifted writer and director of the similarly nasty 2008 comedy, “In Bruges,” in which a hit man’s hate for Bruges, Belgium, continues to seethe hilariously until the bitter, bitter end. Gleeson seems to be the ideal

frontman for the McDonaghs’ brand of dark humor, and every chunk of bile in “The Guard” gets served with a smile. He is a master of misdirection. Watch Gerry carefully, because while his mouth says one profanityspiced thing, his eyes say another. Beyond the glorious rancor, McDonagh seems to be having fun at the considerable expense of Hollywood action films and conventional screenwriting. “The Guard” looks like a fish-out-of-water buddy-cop movie until people start opening their mouths. Crime scene photographers and child witnesses are not what they seem, and even Gerry’s terminally ill mother (the wonderful Fionnula Flanagan) has a wild streak. “The Guard” achieves the kind of subversive comedy that plants its laughs for later detonation. Viewers will likely find themselves laughing at lines or situations hours or days afterward. It is a fine example of taking timeworn plot elements of Jerry Bruckheimerproduced action films and spiking them with new life, and Gleeson, known for playing Mad-Eye Moody in the “Harry Potter” films, creates one of the best antiheroes of recent years.

‘OUR IDIOT BROTHER’

Rating: R (Sexual content including nudity, and for language throughout) Running time: 1 hour, 30 minutes Starring: Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel

Rudd, ‘Our Idiot Brother’ all over the place

P

aul Rudd hops from one sofa to another to another as the title character in “Our Idiot Brother,” and that’s sort of what the film itself does, too. Rudd stars as an amiable, ambling dude named Ned who has no real goals in life; what he does have is a guilelessness that consistently gets him into trouble, both with his family and with the law. (At the film’s start, he sells pot to a uniformed police officer, which earns him some brief time behind bars.) He has a knack for always saying or doing the wrong thing, even though he always means well. Director Jesse Peretz, working from a script written by his sister, Evgenia Peretz, and her husband, David Schisgall, follows Ned as he bumbles his way from one situation to the next with no great momentum or sense of character evolution. Ned grows increasingly irritating to his hippie farmer ex-girlfriend (Kathryn Hahn), the three sisters he mooches off of (Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel) and to us. But then supposedly once they’ve

<<<

all shunned him for causing so much inadvertent damage, they take him back because they realize what a positive influence he is in their lives. It makes no sense — there’s a gap of logic and emotion that’s hard to overcome. Still, the usually likable Rudd is totally committed to playing this annoying, goofy schlub: a Capraesque character in cargo shorts and shaggy facial hair. You don’t blame the sisters for ostracizing him, but then they’re all drawn in such an unlikable, two-dimensional way, you won’t want to be on their side, either. Director Peretz says they’re all meant to represent specific New York types, but they never feel fully realized. First, Ned stays with Mortimer’s Liz, the smug, hovering, ultra-P.C. Brooklyn mom; her kids are named River and Echo. She’s married to a skeevy and disdainful documentary filmmaker played by a surprisingly unfunny Steve Coogan. They are obsessed with getting their son into the right private school. When he wears out his welcome there, he moves in with Banks’ Miranda, an impatient and ambitious

LOOKATOKC.COM

writer for Vanity Fair (where Peretz the screenwriter is a contributing editor in real life). She’ll do whatever she must to get good play for her piece on a British royal, even if it means using Ned to obtain secondhand information. She also bosses around her neighbor (Adam Scott, who has some nice, easygoing banter with Rudd); he has a crush on her for reasons that are difficult to comprehend. (Again, it’s really hard to make Elizabeth Banks unlikable; “Our Idiot Brother” has achieved that dubious feat.) Finally he joins Deschanel’s Natalie, a bisexual, bohemian artsy type who lives in an already crowded loft. She’s dating a lawyer named Cindy (Rashida Jones), poses nude for painters and tries out awkward new material at poorly attended open mike nights. Unlike the other sisters, she’s not uptight; instead, she’s selfish and flighty to a fault. Whether Ned tears them all apart, brings them back together or finally finds a permanent home, it’s hard to care, because the film doesn’t seem to care, either. —Associated Press

‘DE U S E X ’

Part of a revolution, in it’s own way

I

f you could replace any part of your body with a more powerful mechanical substitute, where would you start? Do you get new legs that let you jump higher and run faster? New eyes that let you see through walls? Or skin implants that make you invisible for a few seconds? Adam Jensen, the hero of “Deus Ex: Human Revolution” (Square Enix, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, $59.99; PC, $49.99), can handle any of them. He doesn’t have much choice; in the prologue, he’s critically wounded by a bomb at a lab run by his employer, Sarif Industries. Fortunately, Sarif is the military’s leading supplier of human replacement parts. And since Jensen is Sarif’s security chief, he needs to get back on his feet and hunt down those responsible for the attack. He’s already half-man/half-machine, but you get to pick which parts of Jensen get upgraded — and your choices will affect your approach to the story. Almost every situation in “Deus Ex” can be handled in several ways. Faced with a warehouse full of armed guards, do you kill them all or try to sneak past? Or do you look for another solution — say, hacking the security robots so they turn against the guards? In some cases, you can even try talking one of the employees into just letting you waltz right through. Whatever strategy you choose, you need the right augmentations. If you’re trigger-happy, you’re going to need a dermal armor implant.

AUGUST 31 - SEPTEMBER 17

Stealthy agents will want to invest in a sound suppressor and upgrade their hacking skills. And more diplomatic types will want the “social enhancer,” which lets you read other characters’ moods and bend them to your will. I chose the sneaky path, mainly because good stealth games are much rarer than first-person shooters. And “Deus Ex” is very good, maybe the best in its subgenre since 1998’s “Metal Gear Solid.” The levels are cleverly designed with multiple routes that allow you to avoid detection; you’ll never look at an air vent the same way again. If you do get caught, you can always blast your way out. “Deus Ex” delivers all the weaponry, from stun guns to rocket launchers, that you’d expect in a contemporary shooter. You’re never restricted to one technique; you can sneak through one level and blow up everything in the next. The major exception to this freedom comes in the battles against major villains. Here, you have to depend on firepower, which can be tricky if you’ve been focusing on building Jensen’s spy skills. These boss battles aren’t impossible, they’re just unimaginative, a disappointing concession to a tired video-game convention. While “Deus Ex” does trot out some techno-thriller cliches — Jensen’s gravelly monotone becomes comical after a few hours — its globe-trotting plot is twisty enough to keep you guessing. And its primary urban hubs, in Detroit and Shanghai, offer so many intriguing side quests that you can easily double your playing time to 30-40 hours. “Human Revolution” is a prequel to 2000’s “Deus Ex,” and it has plenty of in-jokes for fans of that classic. But even if you’re unfamiliar with the original, do not skip this new chapter. It’s a worthy successor, and it’s revolutionary in its own way. OS ANGELES — Matt Damon did not want to catch that same old disease, and he knew the scene that worried him most could easily be infected with mediocrity.

In “Contagion,” a film by Steven Soderbergh that lays out in starkly realistic detail the consequences of a massive viral pandemic, Damon plays Thomas Emhoff, the husband of a woman who is suspected of being “patient zero” in a global medical crisis. In an early scene at a hospital, Emhoff must receive the worst possible news about his wife, and when he was reading the script, Damon feared that he might get caught in a “slump.” “I went to Steven and said, ‘Look, I don’t know what to do,” Damon said at a press event for “Contagion” at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles. “How do you do this scene? It’s five minutes into the movie (and) we’re not invested in me or her. Do I do...’ and Steven says, ‘The slump?’” Yes, the slump. It’s the scene after the doctor comes out of the operating room, pulls down his mask and tells the family, “We did all we could do, but she just was not strong enough. I’m sorry.” Then, as the camera tracks away from the husband, he is overcome by grief and ... he slumps. “Everybody knows the slump,” Damon said, laughing at this overused dramatic device. “You’re down the hall, and you just see the guy slumping over.” So Damon followed the same governing principle that Soderbergh was

and a night of drinking last year, in which the director loudly complained to Damon about how he wanted to quit making films before he repeated himself stylistically, led to a huge misunderstanding. “He wants to paint and he says he’s still young enough to have another career,” Damon told the Los Angeles Times in December. “He’s kind of exhausted with everything that interested him in terms of form. He’s not interested in telling stories. Cinema interested him in terms of form and that’s it. He says, ‘If I see another over-the-shoulder shot, I’m going to blow my brains out.’” Still with us, Soderbergh now chalks it up to many, many emptied glasses. “He’s got total recall when he’s drunk — very alarming,” said Soderbergh, sitting next to Damon at the conference table. Having experienced shoots with Hollywood’s best and brightest, Damon said he continues to work with Soderbergh because of shared vision and a taste for the unexpected. Part of this story also takes place in a bar, but there is no misunderstanding Damon’s appreciation of his friend’s creative process. “Working with Steven is different from working with anybody else,” Damon said. “To give you an example of a day (shooting ‘Contagion’), we’d go and we’d shoot, we’d talk about what we were going to do, figure it out, execute the plan, and then we’d go back to the hotel and go to the bar. “In the back room of the bar, they’d deliver the footage, and Steven and Scott and I and Greg Jacobs, our other producer... we’d just sit there and talk while Steven would put on headphones and opened up his laptop and kind of sat in the corner for 45 minutes or an hour. Then, at the end, he’d take his headphones off, he’d turn his computer around and show us what we shot, that day, cut.” Damon shakes his head in amazement at how it all came out. “When you’re working that way, it’s kind of like making a movie in your backyard with your friends,” he said.

standing by for the entire film — he found out what really happens. He and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, whom Damon worked with on Soderbergh’s “The Informant!” as well as “The Bourne Ultimatum,” met with an emergency room doctor who outlined the common emotional reactions exhibited by next-of-kin. The doctor told Damon that medical professionals following protocols use specific language about death, and the families of people who suddenly and unexpectedly die often react with quiet, disbelieving shock. And as a result, no slumps were experienced in the making of “Contagion.” At 40, Damon spends most of his time working with directors who are charting their own distinct paths through Hollywood. His filmography since the beginning of 2010 includes projects with Paul Greengrass, Clint Eastwood, Kenneth Lonergan, Joel and Ethan Coen and Soderbergh, with whom Damon has made six films and will make it seven with 2013’s “Liberace.” In fact, Damon and Soderbergh were ramping up to work on “Liberace” when Soderbergh abruptly decided to take a side trip into global disease. “Steven called and said, ‘I’ve got this other thing and we really got to make it now, because it’s really timely and it’s the best thing Scott’s written’ — which is saying quite a bit, because obviously I think a lot of Scott,” Damon said. “So he sent it over to me with a note that said, ‘Read this, then wash your hands.’” Much as it does with Damon’s hospital scene, “Contagion,” opening Sept. 9, studious avoids the storytelling styles and tropes associated with outbreak films such as, well, 1995’s “Outbreak.” Apart from “Ocean’s Eleven” and its two sequels, Soderbergh and Damon have managed to make films with different tones and feelings each time, although the fear of repetition led to a widely published, highly premature obituary for Soderbergh’s film career. Soderbergh and Damon are friends,

n a cold December afternoon last year, George Lang and I were doing what we do best: Keeping each other from getting our work done. Sometimes it’s reciting dialogue from the Rankin/Bass production of “The Hobbit,” sometimes it’s waxing nostalgic on days of New Romanticism, others it’s extrapolating the talent and success of Mila Kunis to project the future of Olivia Munn. From time to time, food is the subject. For instance, I like to threaten George, a pescatarian married to a vegetarian, that my vegetarian wife and I will buy all the Quorn products from the Crest Market with which we both do trade. But on this particular afternoon, our common love for food and film clashed. We agreed that great meals and great films mark time and are worthy of celebration. We wondered how great a festival celebrating both would be? We agreed if anyone should host it, it would be the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, considering it has both a first-rate restaurant and cinema. So, I said to George, “I think I’ll email Leslie Spears right now.” Within a couple minutes, Spears, marketing director for the museum, and I were on the phone. She loved the idea and told me she’d run it by film curator Bryan Hearn, which she did. Once Hearn got clear of the Sundance Film Festival in February, the slow wheels of planning began to turn. About a month ago, we finally worked out the details, Hearn came up with the perfect films and chef Ahmad Farnia’s crew came up with a menu to pair with the films. The result is the first-ever and hopefully not-last Foodie Film Feastival. The three-day event begins Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m., with “El Bulli: Cooking in Progress.” The documentary follows world-renowned chef Ferran Adria at his Spanish restaurant El Bulli. The opportunity to see this film comes right on the heels of the legendary restaurant closing its doors so that Adria can continue his exploration of flavor unbridled. The film also closes the inaugural festival at 2 p.m. on Sept. 18. On Sept. 16, and Sept. 17, we will screen “Soul Kitchen.” The German comedy revolves around a locals-only restaurant. Through a series of comedic set pieces, the film depicts people of various cultures hop-scotching international borders in pursuit of individual destinies. “Soul Kitchen” begins at 5:30 p.m. both days. Following “Soul Kitchen” Friday and Saturday will be “The Trip.” This comedy starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon follows the two British comedians as they tour England’s finest restaurants for a travelogue. It’s like ordering “My Dinner With Andre” but substituting the philosophy for a tasting menu of comedic one-upsmanship. Thursday through Saturday evening from 6:30 to 9:30, the Museum Cafe will host a Redhook Craft Beer and Food Tasting. Guests can sample five premium Redhook beers paired with artisanal cheeses and savory sides for $25. For more information about the event, go to www.okcmoa.com/see/films. We’ve got some other things up our sleeve, too, and we will release details between now and then. In the meantime, don’t dismiss that that idle work chatter. Maybe Congress should consider some.

> Three-star chef Ferran Adrià is widely considered the best, most innovative and craziest chef in the world. In his kitchen, that which was once familiar disintegrates. Each year his restaurant El Bulli closes for half a year – time for Adrià and his team to retire to his Barcelona cooking laboratory to create the new menu for the coming season. Anything goes – except copying oneself. An elegant, detailed study of food as avant-garde art, El Bulli: Cooking In Progress is a tasty peek at some of the world’s most innovative and exciting cooking. > Young restaurant owner Zinos is down on his luck. His girlfriend Nadine has moved to Shanghai, his Soul Kitchen customers are boycotting the new gourmet chef, and he‘s having back trouble. Things start looking up when the hip crowd embraces his revamped culinary concept, but that doesn‘t mend Zinos’ broken heart. He decides to fly to China for Nadine, leaving the restaurant in the hands of his unreliable ex-con brother Illias. But brothers Zinos and Illias might still have one last chance to get Soul Kitchen back if they can stop arguing and work together as a team.

When Steve Coogan is asked by The Observer newspaper to tour the country’s finest restaurants, he envisions it as the perfect getaway with his beautiful girlfriend. But, when she backs out on him, he has no one to accompany him but his best friend and source of eternal aggravation, Rob Brydon. As the brilliant comic duo, freestyling with flair, drive each other mad with constant competition and showdowns of competing impressions, the ultimate odd couple realize in the end a rich amount about not only good food, but the nature of fame, relationships and their own lives.

he restaurant below the Cattlemen’s Cafe sign has sparred with fate and fortune for 101 years and still hasn’t lost. Good fortune has always smiled on the restaurant. It once was won on a hard-six in a craps game from one reputed gambler to another. It has survived major changes to its surroundings, an epic local oil bust and furious Oklahoma weather. When one aging owner needed help, a pair of local restaurateurs stepped in to steer the place into the next century. And now, early into

its second century of operation, business has never been better. But none of that good luck would’ve been possible without great steak. When Dick Stubbs and David Egan took over Cattlemen’s Cafe in 1990, they turned it into Cattlemen’s Steakhouse to emphasize the one thing that made not only the restaurant viable but the whole of Stockyards City. Namely, beef. The former owners of Applewood’s struck gold with the idea, and two decades later the number of diners served daily is the stuff of legend.

the double-threes that fateful night is disputed, but the Wades’ taking control of Cattlemen’s in 1945 is not. The Wades, perhaps sensing an end to the Big House, took Cattlemen’s seriously. In fact, they ended up converting the Big House, which was at 2500 W Reno, into a restaurant, too. Gene Wade was in his 20s when he and his father took over Cattlemen’s, and he ran it until the early 1980s. “I was friends with Gene Wade,” Stubbs said. “He approached me to come down and help him out a bit; his wife was sick, and they found out later he was sick also. But a fresh coat of paint and few murals aren’t enough to draw the attention of Food Network, Travel Channel and countless national magazines and travel books. It takes expertly made steak to do that. “We take our beef very seriously,” Egan said. “We serve choice and prime cuts and age and hand-cut them ourselves.” Strips, fillets and rib-eye are all on the menu along with Blue Ribbon cuts from prime beef. “Our goal is for you to get the same steak today to taste just like the one you ordered 10 or 20 years ago,” Egan said. But man cannot live on steak alone. One must have lamb fries and the house salad and a few rolls to sop the excess dressing and forthcoming jus. Through booms and busts, dust storms and tornadoes, Cattlemen’s has served the packing district, traveling cattle traders, presidents, celebrities, carpetbaggers and now tourists from across the nation.

So many trends, so little time. This fall, pop culture meets classic chic in fashion trends. Whether you’re in love with the “That ‘70s Show” working girl look, complete with tie-neck blouses and flared pants a la “Three’s Company”; a more luxurious, glamorous statement made by cashmere and elegant comfort; or the retro looks inspired by style icons Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O. or even TV’s “Mad Men,” this season’s all about fun, imagination and channeling your inner diva. Dee Dee Benham, owner of Balliets, just returned from a trip to New York where she visited with several designers she might add to her lines at Balliets. She’s been dressing Oklahoma women for decades. How do Oklahoma women compare with the fashionable women of New York City? “I think (Oklahoma women are) definitely aware of the trends, but they like to buy the trends in a more sophisticated way. In other words, they don’t go to the extremes,” Benham said. What are Oklahoma women shopping for? Dresses. “Things that can go from work and can translate to evening,” Benham said. “Like, if you have a little jacket or sweater, you can wear it to work and then take it off and have it look great for evening.” That’s fortunate, because many of today’s strongest looks are dresses. Long and short, belted, layered, retro, toughened up by a leather jacket or dressed up with a feathery cardigan, dresses are on the hot list. This week in Mood, we look at a few of our favorites from the plethora of hot trends for fall: retro/pop culture inspired, classic chic and military. Mustard yellow is one of fall’s strongest colors. Wearing the color in this T. Tahini Cleo dress with black beaded accessories, model Jessica Taylor evokes a little taste of “Mad Men” fashion. Dress and accessories available at Dillard’s Penn Square.

Wear it on Wisteria Lane. 7 For All Mankind blue boot-cut jeans paired with a decadent plum Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater layered over a matching underpinning and finished with Diane von Furstenberg Zia suede platorms make a luxurious and elegant yet understated statement. Classic chic is what this look is all about. All clothing and accessories from Balliets.

Lilly Stone, owner of Sooo Lilly Exclusive Cosmetics, braved triple-digit heat on location for this week’s Mood photo shoot (at an abandoned house in Yukon) to work her makeup magic on our model. Military never seems to go out of style, especially when knocked out by a pair of Jimmy Choo Estate snakeskin and patent leather stilettos. For fall 2011, the typical olive green of military fashion is sticking around, but the standouts are in shades of camel, gray and even winter white. Here, we paired a Rachel Zoe military jacket with bronze hardware with black Paige Denim jeans. All clothing and accessories from Balliets.

Stone focused on perfectly lined red lipstick. And by lipstick, we mean a creamier, less shiny but equally luxurious red than seen in past seasons. She also recommends lining the insides of both the top and bottom eyelids — but make sure you use a liner that won’t irritate your eyes. Liquid liners will turn your baby blues bright red as will some pencil liners. Visit Stone at Sooo Lilly Exclusive Cosmetics at her new location inside Kokopelli at Northpark Mall, 12100 N May.

Dustbowl Arts Market > On Saturday, Aug. 27, Buchanan Street on Campus Corner was buzzing with activity. Artist and handmade crafters from the region lined the street, selling their creations, and 20 local bands provided entertainment throughout the day. Patrons enjoyed the laid back tunes of Denver Duncan or rocked out to this year’s headliners, Stillwater’s Colourmusic. >>> Photos by Adam Kemp
