efore this issue leaves the racks, Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook will present the iPhone 5 in a packed auditorium at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., campus, and millions of impatient tech fanatics will start checking their work calendars, trying to determine if they can ditch work to stand in line at the Apple Store on release day. This is how we get our jollies now: We actually contemplate taking a sleeping bag to the mall to buy a phone. I say “we” because I’m not exactly a scornful Luddite chastising the conspicuous consumers he considers fools or easily led techno-sheep. Having seen the drool beginning to accumulate, my wife “bought” me an iPhone 5 for my birthday earlier this month. She knew I wanted one — that, and the just-released Bluray of “The Big Lebowski” — but because customers cannot preorder what officially does not yet exist, she essentially set aside the money, knowing that one of the last things my 3GS would be called to do would be a 4 a.m. alarm setting on the release date before being carted away to the obsolete robot destruction rally from “A.I.” A generation ago, people pitched tents in front of box offices to buy Bruce Springsteen tickets or queued up at midnight in front of Sound Warehouse to purchase “Achtung Baby.” If anybody breaks out the long underwear and camping supplies to stand in front of a stadium in 2011, it’s because they are nostalgic for having done it in 1986, or they are street performers, or they

just roused from comas that commenced with the advent of the personal computer. Sure, there is something vaguely romantic in a “Dazed and Confused” kind of way about sitting outside a convention center all night, watching your breath fog, just to buy $12 tickets to see Geddy Lee’s nostrils from the sixth row. But count me out now, unless it involves something shinier, lighter, bigger, smaller, thinner, brighter or more powerful. Here’s the problem: I know the morning will be tragic. By 10:30 a.m., most people will be ready to strangle most of the other people they’ve gotten to know so well for the previous five hours, especially the one lady who refuses to let the people around her step out of line for bathroom breaks. Then the whisper trail will begin: not enough iPhones to satisfy everyone in line. After that, the conspiracy theories commence when the really loud guy in the really loud Tommy Bahama shirt five people in front of you informs everyone that the store only received 25 units. And he knows that because he has a friend who works there, but that apparently didn’t keep Tommy Bahama from waking up in the middle of the night like the rest of the dupes in line. Sounds awesome, right? And this column will probably be fodder for an early round of accusations that I’m purposely trying to depress the turnout so I can buy my phone in peace. Like that would work. Of course, I didn’t mention the smelly circus clowns who always show up on release day to make balloon animals but only know how to make snakes, or the guy with the guitar who wanders up and down the line, singing only John Mayer’s “Your Body is a Wonderland” until the store opens. Because those wouldn’t scare you away, either. Would they?

No excuses, go to a local show

M

SHOWS TO SEE, OR NOT TO SEE

y dog ate my trombone case. That’s an excuse I used on my middle music teachers when I didn’t want to practice 10 hours a week. They requested photographic evidence. It rarely worked. I hear similar excuses after people skip out on concerts. Excuses pop up often, especially when people discuss why the Oklahoma music scene isn’t bigger and bolder. I’ve constructed a few popular ones that keep people out of music venues across the state.

Sept. 30: It’s no mistake that John Moreland’s latest release, “Earthbound Blues,” continues to be one of the best Okie releases this year. He is not to be missed. The Dead End Drifters and Robert Steel will join Moreland in Norman. I suggest you do the same. @ The

Bluebonnet Bar, 321 E. Main St., Norman

Sept. 30: Stillwater’s psychedelic rockers BrotherBear open for Austin’s surf punks YellowFever. @ The Opolis, 1311

1. I don’t know who that band is… Sometimes Google and iTunes can’t find everything.

N Crawford Ave., Norman

Oct. 1: The 2011 Plaza District Festival is hosting a healthy collection of local talent at its celebration of Okie art and music. The Boom Bang, Junebug Spade, The Wurly Birds and Brother Gruesome are just a few of the bands performing. Kite Flying Robot and Tony Brown’s Happy Hour are set to play the after party show at Saints. @The Plaza District, NW

2. I didn’t think the show was that night… Life happens. Sometimes a concert falls on the same night as Zooey Deschanel’s new sitcom. You can’t make it to every show. 3. I don’t know what to do at a show that’s not headlined by Coldplay… Local shows are different from arena shows. When I went to my first show at The Conservatory, not only did I not know where to stand but also I didn’t know if there was a cool way to stand. 4. I don’t know anyone going… Fear of flying solo. It’s like seeing Sandra Bullock’s new romantic comedy alone in a movie theater. She ends up with Ryan Reynolds. You end up with popcorn in your teeth.

16th Street and N Blackwelder Avenue

Oct. 13: Explosions in the Sky and Wye Oak are landing in Oklahoma City. Prepare yourselves for a concentrated brain punch of noisy and powerful rock. @Diamond Ballroom, 8001

5. I’m broke… Bills are the worst. We all have excuses for everything and often times there isn’t enough time in the day to think about Oklahoma’s local music scene. Luckily, it’s easy to destroy these excuses. There’s a concert almost every night of the week. Local shows are often free or cheaper than a movie ticket with 3D glasses. There’s no wrong concert to go to and the music scene in Oklahoma is full of familiar faces. I’m not saying every band in Oklahoma is worth your time, but we have quality musicians to create an opportunity. We can change the definition of a local show. If we put down the excuses and embrace a local music scene then we can continue to foster an environment for band’s to grow. If you help bands get big here then you’ll be surprised where they end up.

‘THIS IS MY BLOOD’ – THE DIRT DRIFTERS

A

blue-collar authenticity all too often missing from contemporary country music flows through “This Is My Blood,” the long-delayed, worth-the-wait debut album from The Dirt Drifters. The Drifters — Moore natives Matt Fleener (lead vocals/guitar) and his brother Ryan Fleener (vocals/guitar), New Jersey-bred Jeff Middleton (vocals/guitar), Tennessee-raised Jeremy Little (bass) and Louisiana-born Nick Diamond (drums) — mingle heartland rock, honky-tonk and Americana in their sound. But they actually sound like a real band rather than a manufactured product. As seasoned survivors of the Nashville, Tenn., music machine, life has provided plenty of experience in the automotive, construction and related industries for the band members. So when they pay tribute to the working man’s blessings and curses with “Name on My Shirt,” his easily justified celebratory drinking on “Always a Reason” or his frustrated hope for “Something Better” on the toe-tapping first single, they can do it with tuneful authority. The road-tested songwriter/musicians aren’t novices, and they aren’t afraid to let the age or the mileage seep into the cautionary tale “Married Men and Motel Rooms,” the melancholy ballad “Hurt Somebody” or the go-for-broke rocker “Just Got Tonight.” The Drifters don’t have to name-drop Willie Nelson or Waylon Jennings in an attempt to co-opt some outlaw credibility; “The Red Headed Stranger” can be heard crooning “On the Road Again” as the band boldly opines about politics, the media, celebrity role models and more. For the title track, the band delivers an affecting acoustic anthem about country living blessedly devoid of the put-on rural pandering that has become so trendy in modern country music. Hopefully, The Dirt Drifters will soon get the chance to record a sophomore album that will show more of their blue-collar blood. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer LOOKATOKC.COM

‘STRANGE MERCY’ – ST. VINCENT

A

nnie Clark’s music as St. Vincent is equal parts silk and sandpaper, a quality that makes her finest songs sound like bloodbaths inside Cinderella’s castle. Three albums into a truly singular creative path, the Tulsa-born Clark’s lyrical acuity and guitar virtuosity is only improving. “Strange Mercy” unfolds as a series of beautifully arranged, exquisitely wrought psychodramas, as told in Clark’s ghostly Broadway voice. When she sings “best, finest surgeon/ come cut me open” on the first single, “Surgeon,” it is to purge the darkness that permeates even the most beautiful corners of “Strange Mercy.” That Walt Disney-style fairy tale swirl that enveloped “The Strangers” from 2009’s “Actor” drifts over the propulsive “Cruel” like a malevolent fog, as Clark sings about casual violence in which “They could take or leave you/ So they took you, and they left you.” In “Cheerleader,” she sings that “I’ve played dumb when I knew better,” embodying the title character who wants out of the pom squad for good, probably because, as “cheerleader” becomes “dirt eater” toward the end, the teen dream is turning into a nightmare. Clark often sings obliquely about victims, but her avenging angel vocals always seem to imply that the villains distressed the wrong damsel. Clark’s guitar work on “Strange Mercy” volleys between ethereal bell tones in the midsection of the title track to buzz saw distortion on “Neutered Fruit” and “Hysterical Strength” — she is exploring texture in a way that frequently recalls Robert Fripp’s most experimental bents with King Crimson. Producer John Congleton makes every unsettling noise count and puts Clark’s vocals in the spotlight for every arrangement. St. Vincent is creating soundtracks for velvety fairy-tale nightmares, and “Strange Mercy” shows a true artist finding glory in the grim. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘AMERICAN GOLDWING’ – BLITZEN TRAPPER

F

or Pacific Northwesterners, Blitzen Trapper sound more authentic South-Centralist than ever on “American Goldwing,” the Portland, Ore., band’s third full-length album for Seattle’s seminal alternative label Sub Pop. A brokenhearted, pedal steel and banjo embroidered drinking song such as “Love the Way You Walk Away” and the loping, harmonica-laced title cut would sound right at home on some well-established Nashville, Tenn., imprint. But there are edgier tracks such as the rollicking 12-string-acoustic-electric “Might Find It Cheap,” the slide-and-piano strutting “Fletcher,” the harp-wailing, distortion-scorched “Your Crying Eyes” and the searing, string-bending “Street Fighting Sun” that sound like samples from the dear departed, Southern-rocking, Macon, Ga.based Capricorn Records catalog. Then there are sad rustic sunset ballads such as “My Home Town,” “Girl in a Coat” and “Stranger in a Strange Land” that are strongly reminiscent of products from the folkie Rounder Records roster, with Blitzen belter and chief songwriter Eric Earley letting his love of Bob Dylan turn his vocals all nasal and downcast. But mixing all these elements together - the way only Earley and company can - adds up to a sound that is distinctly Blitzen Trapper’s own, at turns rocking and celebratory, melancholy, nostalgic and moving, and some of the best electrified alternative Americana you can find, past or present. — Gene Triplett, Entertainment Editor

‘DRIVE’

Rating: R (Strong brutal bloody violence, language and some nudity) Running time: 1 hour, 40 minutes Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston.

Gosling takes audience on a really fast ‘Drive’

N

icolas Winding Refn’s “Drive” feels like an alternate-universe Michael Mann film, a tense, stylish Los Angeles heist movie bathed in the chrome and neon of that city during its New Wave 1980s and shot with the icy tones and kinetics of French cinema du look films such as “Diva.” It looks and sounds familiar, and yet this crime thriller feels like the beginning of something new, as if it could be a “Pulp Fiction”-like force that influences the next several years of art-house gunplay operas. Ryan Gosling plays the Driver, a “man with no name” who stunt-drives on Hollywood sets on days when he’s not working in an East Los Angeles repair shop owned by Shannon (Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad”). Shannon also sets the Driver up with nighttime assignments: driving getaway vehicles on heists. At the beginning of “Drive,” Refn introduces the Driver by showing him in action, shaking off a phalanx of Los Angeles police officers by simply making the right sequence of turns at blinding speed and disappearing into the night. Not even the crooks in the backseat can believe what he’s doing. The Driver is a quiet man with a pleasant smile who never initiates conversations and answers as succinctly as possible. Talking too much might confuse the situation. He is an astute observer, and in his low-rent <<<

apartment building, he is observing Irene (Carey Mulligan), a seemingly single mother who lives down the hall with her young son, Benicio (Kaden Leon). Irene is only slightly less quiet, sad-eyed and a little confused by her situation: her husband (Oscar Isaac), who has the extraordinary name Standard Gabriel, is being released from prison in a few days, and yet there is this quiet, good-looking guy in the silver racing jacket who likes Benicio, can fix her dying car and seems dependable in all the right ways. Everyone is amazed at the Driver’s work, including Bernie Rose, the gangster played with extraordinary dark charm by Albert Brooks. Shannon gets Bernie to bankroll a race car for the Driver, but Bernie is not the kind of person who takes a loss on anything — Shannon’s constant, painful-looking limp is proof of that. Bernie and his crime partner Nino (Ron Perlman) seem to have a lock on stickups in the area, and when Standard gets out of prison, he is immediately indentured by the mobsters, and the Driver is more than happy to help a neighbor. All of this sounds hard-boiled, and yet Refn, who directed the oddly campy prisoner biopic “Bronson” in 2008 and then the hallucinatory Viking nightmare “Valhalla Rising” the following year, imbues “Drive” with a disarmingly romantic undercurrent — there is a key scene near the midpoint that will sweep viewers

LOOKATOKC.COM

off their feet just before delivering a sickening dose of ultra-violence. The chemistry between Gosling and Mulligan (“An Education”) is undeniable, but their characters are star-crossed: Irene met the wrong guy at a party 10 years ago and is paying for it, and the Driver moves through his increasingly bloodstained world as if he has no hope of things going well, and never really did. Everyone, including Christina Hendricks of “Mad Men” as a low-level bagman’s moll, is hitting the right notes, but the biggest thrill comes from watching Brooks, one of the most gifted comedic writers and performers of his generation, operate as if he were Satan’s earthly representative. Brooks rarely takes deadserious roles, and in “Drive” he only has a few funny lines, but he delivers them like knives to the abdomen. Refn and screenwriter Hossein Amini give Brooks a line that, for those paying attention, says volumes about “Drive.” Bernie is discussing his old days as a movie producer in Hollywood when he describes his 1980s films as “kind of like action movies, sexy stuff. One critic called them ‘European.’ ” Behold, from the icy electro-pop score by Cliff Martinez to the purple script font on the title and credits, this is exactly what Refn is making with “Drive.” — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘MONEYBALL’

Rating: PG-13 (strong language) Running time: 2 hours, 6 minutes Starring: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Chris Pratt, Kerris Dorsey.

‘Moneyball’ not quite a home run, but close

W

hen it comes to inside baseball, few films play the game as masterfully as “Moneyball,” the long-delayed adaptation of Michael Lewis’ best-selling book “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game.” You don’t have to be a baseball devotee or even a sports fan to appreciate director Bennett Miller’s (“Capote”) crisp storytelling, the crackling chemistry between stars Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill or the superb screenwriting combo of Oscar winners Steven Zaillian (“Schindler’s List”), with his penchant for digging into the drama of a tale, and Aaron Sorkin (“The Social Network”), with his knack for penning laser-sharp dialogue. Sorkin’s rapid-fire discourse is vital to explaining the concept of sabermetrics, which focuses on statistics rather than old-school scouting methods to evaluate players and build teams. The film opens as Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane (Pitt, who should earn his third Academy Award nomination) pitches one of his legendary temper fits. It’s hard to blame him, since his team has just been knocked out of the playoffs by the New York Yankees, and he knows the A’s are about to become “organ donors.” Before you can say “rebuilding year,” deeppocket outfits such as the Yankees and Boston Red Sox poach his most valuable players — Jason Giambi, Johnny

Damon and Jason Isringhausen — and the A’s front office refuses to boost his paltry budget to recruit star-caliber replacements. As he listens to the team’s graybeard scouts pitch potential prospects, Beane can’t shake the sinking sensation that the A’s won’t be able to win unless they find a way to level the playing field. He knows firsthand that the traditional scouting system is flawed; as revealed through a series of well-timed flashbacks, Beane was once a “fivetool,” highly touted player (Reed Thompson) who gave up a full ride to Stanford but never became the superstar pro player the scouts predicted. In a competitor’s office, Beane meets Peter Brand (Hill, whose character is a dramatization and pseudonym for Paul DePodesta), a 25-year-old, buttoned-down Yale economics grad and sabermetrics disciple who shares Beane’s belief that the old system has become inherently flawed as the sport has changed. Brand argues that teams shouldn’t be buying players, they should be buying wins. More specifically, they should be spending money on undervalued, overlooked players who have a knack for getting on base, since you have to get on base to score, and you have to put runs on the scoreboard to win. Beane hires Brand as the A’s new assistant GM, and they bury themselves in equations and percentages, spreadsheets and little-known names. To the consternation of head scout Grady (Ken Medlock) and the rest of the team’s recruiters, Beane and Brand rebuild the once

high-profile team with underappreciated journeymen including Scott Hatteberg (Chris Pratt, who manages to steal a few scenes from Pitt), a former catcher retrained as first baseman to take advantage of his impressive on-base stats; Chad Bradford (Casey Bond), a relief pitcher whose odd throwing motion has kept him on the sidelines; and David Justice (Stephen Bishop), an aging outfielder. While Brand successfully brings Beane into the sabermetrics camp, the GM neglects to convert grumpy manager Art Howe (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to the system. Howe obstinately tries to play the redesigned team the old-fashioned way, and it seems his stubbornness will keep the experiment from ever getting on base. In some of the movie’s best wheeling-and-dealing scenes, Beane and Brand force Howe to play it their way, and before long, the thrill of winning is competing with the exhilaration of turning an entire sport on its head. Miller’s film isn’t quite a home run. Like many baseball games, it runs a little long and occasionally loses its momentum. While Kerris Dorsey (TV’s “Brothers & Sisters”) is given a chance to shine as Beane’s teenage daughter Casey, the talented Robin Wright is underused as his ex-wife. But with Pitt and Hill swinging for the fences, “Moneyball” does more than just get on base. And as we’ve learned, that’s the key to winning the game.

hen you’re a wife and working mother, there’s this inescapable, self-imposed pressure to do everything right all the time. The idea of having it all — a great job and a loving family, a toned body and a sane mind — is as appealing as it is elusive. You’re constantly letting someone down sometime, which leads to guilt, which leads to more stress — which leads to more sleepless nights, which doesn’t help anybody. “I Don’t Know How She Does It,” based on the best-selling novel of the same name, gets that dynamic, that incessant juggling act, and the ways in which we self-flagellate in trying to perfect it. The complications are greater these days than ever, and director Douglas McGrath finds just the right tone in depicting that. Sometimes. Too often, though, he smothers those nuggets of insight with a jaunty, sitcom tone, with gags that are telegraphed from a mile away and music that works hard to cue our emotional responses. It doesn’t help that Sarah Jessica Parker, as the

film’s star, chimes in early and often with voiceovers that sound like the observations she used to make as Carrie on “Sex and the City,” the role with which she eternally, intrinsically will be tied. Here, as Kate Reddy, she’s usually a mess: shirt partially untucked, hair uncombed, a splotch of that morning’s breakfast lodged in a crusty clump on her blazer. Kate is an investment manager at the Boston office of a big New York financial firm, which already takes her away too often from her husband (Greg Kinnear), their 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son. But when she pitches an ambitious project to the firm’s head honcho (Pierce Brosnan), just as her husband gets a new gig, they find themselves even more crazed. McGrath is working from a script by Aline Brosh McKenna. Together they offer individual moments that ring true, such as the one in which Kate takes a moment from an all-night, out-of-town work session to sing her son to sleep over her cellphone with his favorite song. Parker has always been game for physical comedy, and she gets plenty of opportunities to show off those veteran skills here, but she’s

LOOKATOKC.COM

also maintained a girlish vulnerability — that petite body, that tiny voice — that endears her even further. That’s why it’s so frustrating when McGrath features supporting characters speaking directly into the camera about Kate as if they were taking part in a documentary about her. Rather than providing a sense of intimacy, as if we’re being let in on some juicy secrets, this device holds us at arm’s length and doesn’t make much sense within the straightforward structure of the rest of the film. Individual members of the strong supporting cast do get a chance to shine in these instances, including a radiant Christina Hendricks as Kate’s best friend, Busy Phillips as a judgmental stay-at-home mom and Oklahoma City-bred Olivia Munn as Kate’s humorless assistant. Parker has some enjoyable chemistry with Brosnan, her suave, sophisticated opposite, but the usually likable Kinnear barely registers because he just isn’t fleshed out. Not that any of this matters. The women this film targets are too busy to go to the movies anyway. – Associated Press

‘STRAW DOGS’

‘Straw Dogs’ will push you to the edge

S

traw Dogs is an artful provocation — a meditation on masculinity and societal mores in the guise of an explosive thriller. While remaking Sam Peckinpah’s controversial 1971 classic, writer-director Rod Lurie (“The Contender,” “The Last Castle”) has kept the plot virtually intact. What makes the two films feel radically different is tone. Where Peckinpah was borderline nihilistic, Lurie is unabashedly humanist, simultaneously celebrating and mourning the primal savagery we all harbor within us — a savagery that has been lulled into dormancy by civilization. On paper, Oklahoma native James Marsden and Kate Bosworth seem like odd substitutes for Dustin Hoffman and Susan George: These young, attractive actors are best known for their work in comicbook movies (“X-Men,” “Superman Returns”) and comedies. But their casting turns out to be a stroke of genius — so far removed from the stars of the original film that the inevitable comparisons are rendered moot. Marsden and Bosworth, delivering career-high performances both, make these characters their own. The story remains simple: Hollywood screen-

writer David Sumner (Marsden) and his actress wife Amy (Bosworth) relocate from the West Coast to her small hometown in Mississippi to restore and then sell her family home. The locals still remember Amy fondly, especially her ex-boyfriend Charlie (Alexander Skarsgard), a former high-school football star whose greatest triumphs are behind him. Charlie is obviously still in love with Amy, but he’s respectful of her marriage and doesn’t overstep his boundaries — at least for a while. The trouble begins when the Sumners hire Charlie and his crew to fix their roof. The workers’ constant presence and rude behavior — one of them walks into the house uninvited and takes a beer from the fridge without asking — gradually takes a toll on the marriage. Hairline cracks become fissures. David suggests that Amy stop dressing so provocatively (“Maybe you should wear a bra”). She responds with anger, claiming she dresses that way for him. The word “coward” is flung around. The men sense David’s emasculation: They can practically sniff it in the air, and they grow bolder in their transgressions. Charlie admires Amy from afar, hammer in hand. An aura of menace develops. Suddenly, even the most commonplace act seems fraught with danger.

In Peckinpah’s “Straw Dogs,” you watched the characters from a distance, like lab rats in a clinical study of marital dysfunction, but you never related to them as people: They were strange and unknowable. In Lurie’s version, you genuinely like the Sumners and understand their union — David is essentially the audience surrogate — so you feel the tension in your gut as the couple faces increasingly threatening intrusions and violations. Lurie’s “Straw Dogs” argues that we are products of our environment and that we learn to survive by embracing the attitudes and values around us, even when they contradict our own instincts. When a bored David walks out on a church sermon, he’s not aware of the offense he’s committing against the locals. But he, like Amy, will eventually learn by force. Much like Peckinpah’s film, the new “Straw Dogs” climaxes with an eruption of extreme violence, and the sequence is both cathartic and corrosive. There is a great tragedy to the bloodbath, but there is great victory, too. You can only push people so far before they break — or start to fight back. The conflagration that ends “Straw Dogs” is more triumphant than lamentable: Sometimes, you have to be taken to the edge of the abyss to find out who you really are.

‘ G E A R S O F WA R 3 ’

‘Gears of War 3’ gets the job done

T

here’s an old military adage that describes war as long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror. Video-game war is different, because no one would pay $60 for a game in which most of the action consisted of polishing your weapon or playing cards with the guys. So in “Gears of War 3” (Microsoft, for the Xbox 360, $59.99), you’re thrust into one battle after another, with just the occasional chance to catch your breath. It gets a little boring. The “Gears” trilogy, which debuted in 2005, tells of the war between mankind and the insectoid Locust on a planet called Sera. At the start of “Gears 3,” the bugs are winning, the last human city has fallen and the Lambent — an even more dangerous mutation of the Locust — are popping to the surface. All hope rests on the muscle-bound shoulders of Marcus Fenix and his fellow “Gears,” soldiers who once served in the army of the now-collapsed Coalition of Ordered Governments. Early on, we learn that Marcus’ father, the brilliant scientist Adam Fenix, is still alive, and may hold the secret to stopping both the Locust and the Lambent. And so the Gears begin a long march toward the tower where Adam is being held prisoner. The devastated landscape of Sera is eerily beautiful, but there’s not much time to admire the scenery — hostile bugs lurk around every corner. They range from the compact yet pesky tickers to the appropriately named leviathan, and you never know which mix of monsters is

going to pop out of the ground. You have plenty of weapons to choose from, starting with the series’ signature firearm: the Lancer, a combination of an assault rifle and a chain saw. New toys include the “digger launcher,” which sends explosives burrowing through the ground, and the Silverback mech suit, factory-

equipped with machine gun and rocket launcher. Most of the battles come in one of two flavors: Either you’re ambushed in a tight corridor or fighting through more expansive spaces, which allow for some rudimentary cover and flanking strategies. There’s nothing new here, but developer Epic Games

pulls off this kind of mayhem as well as anyone, and the firefights are usually exciting. The problem is that the single-player campaign settles into a predictable fight-march-fight rhythm. The occasional changes of pace, like a tedious submarine ride, are halfhearted. There are a few flamboyant boss battles, but the only one that really blew me away was at the game’s finale. Lead writer Karen Traviss does make an effort to turn Marcus and his squadmates into more than relentless killing machines. Dom, who’s mourning his dead wife, and Cole, who’s nostalgic for his days as a star athlete, both get big, dramatic cut scenes, and we’re supposed to grasp the wearying toll that war has taken on Marcus. But these would-be emotional highlights come off as phony, given the constant bro-dude chest-bumping in the action sequences. The 10-hour story doesn’t quite satisfy, but it does serve as a decent appetizer to a feast of multiplayer modes. The popular (and much imitated) Horde mode, in which players team up to fight waves of Locusts, is back; this time, you can earn money to beef up the defenses around your command post. The new Beast mode flips the script, turning you and your friends into Locusts fighting off waves of Gears. You can also team up with three other humans and play through the entire campaign. Or you can all turn against each other in the usual competitive modes, like deathmatch and king-ofthe-hill. It’s a meaty package that’s sure to remain at the top of Xbox Live’s most-played list for months to come. As the conclusion of a trilogy, “Gears of War 3” gets the job done, but it’s certainly not the last we’ve seen of this lucrative franchise. I’m hoping that the next trilogy will be a little less predictable — or that the talented designers at Epic will stretch their wings with something entirely new. – From The Associated Press

efore they headline the massive Riot Fest in Chicago and play to thousands th more at DeLuna Fest on Pensacola Beach, Weezer are pl playing a casino date in Thackerville. Now how did that gig get on their schedule? How does a solidplatinum band that commands top billing at major festivals and arenas all a over the world — a band that’s even headlining its own sea cruise crui — end up playing a rural gambling house in southern Oklahoma? Oklahom Certainly their alt-pop culture cred and music sales have shown sho no noticeable signs of slippage. “I think thi ‘cause we’re in the area,” Weezer cofounder Pat Wilson explained expla via cell phone from Seattle, where he was wandering through an outdoor fish market. thr “I “ don’t really know how those offers come to us. But I’m stoked because it’s near my friend’s house. My friend lives s just j over the border in Texas, so we get to hang out when we go there.” Unless Wilson considers their Oct. 9 date in Chicago to be “in the area,” Weezer’s sparse touring schedule shows no other concerts anywhere near Oklahoma. But that’s probably okay with fans who live within driving distance p of o WinStar World Casino, which houses the 2,500-seat Global Event Center where the Oct. 8 show will take place. G “It’s “ gonna be good times, man,” Wilson said reassuringly over the seafood-shopping crowd noise that surrounded him. Aside from frontman Rivers Cuomo, Wilson is the only other member membe of Weezer who’s been along for the ride since the band’s first practice pra session in Los Angeles back in 1992. The drummer and occasional guitarist, keyboardist and singer-songwriter has ridden ridd out good times and bad with the band, from their self-titled self-titl triple platinum debut in 1994 (aka “The Blue Album”) through the long hiatuses between records when Cuomo studied at Harvard, the initial negative reaction from fans and critics to their 1996 sophomore album, “Pinkerton,” their line-up changes and 2001 “Green Album” comeback to their prolific output in the 2000s. Weezer’s various ups and downs have been well chronicled in the past, including stories about Cuomo’s reclusive periods and bouts with depression and writer’s block. But Wilson says things are better these days.

“I’m actually quite surprised when I read stuff about us in print,” he said. “A lot of it’s news to me. But, you know, we’re all a little bit older now. We’re happy to be doin’ what we’re doin’. ” During those long breaks between albums and tours, Wilson joined former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp in the new wave revival band the Rentals. Wilson then moved on to form his own side project, The Special Goodness, which leans toward a more introspective style of power-pop. That band, which includes Rocket From the Crypt’s Atom Willard, released a self-titled album in 1998 and a follow-up, “Land, Sea, Air,” in 2004. Wilson said a third Special Goodness offering is in the works. “We’ve got 10 songs that we’re trying to finish up right now and that should be out pretty soon,” he said. “It’s pretty stripped-down. Just three-piece rock, really.” Meanwhile, after nearly a decade of acting as sole songwriter on “Weezer” (aka “The Green Album,” 2001), “Maladroit” (2002) and “Make Believe” (2005), Cuomo allowed Wilson and guitarist Brian Bell to contribute one song each to “Weezer” (aka “The Red Album,” 2008), while bassist Scott Shriner was allowed one co-writing credit with Cuomo. Since then, Wilson has penned one tune for “Raditude” (2009) and co-written one track with Cuomo on “Hurley” (2010), while Cuomo has been teaming on some songs with other composers. “I think with ‘Raditude’ and ‘Hurley,’ our last two, there was a kind of collaboration, actually, a lot of outside people working with Rivers,” he said. “I think it definitely made for a different sound than kind of like the classic Weezer sound. I think it’s fun ... You can’t really be a band for 20 years without trying different stuff once in a while. But, personally, it’s all about classic Weezer rock, and that’s what makes me excited.” One of the band’s most recent collaborations was with Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams on a whimsical pop-rock reworking of “Rainbow Connection” from the various-artists tribute to the Muppets, “The Green Album.” And one has to wonder if Wil-

son ever imagined covering a song by mainstream composer Paul Williams. “I did not think that that would happen, no,” he said. “Well, as you know, we’re big fans of the Muppets. We did the ‘Keep Fishin’ video (with the cast of “The Muppet Show,” 2002). They asked us, ‘OK, how about you do “Rainbow Connection” for the Muppets album. Brian Bell from Weezer was kind of the producer on that a little bit.” Another collaboration — this one with a strong Oklahoma connection — came to be on two consecutive nights in late July at New York’s Jones Beach amphitheater, when Weezer literally shared the stage with the Flaming Lips, each band playing their own sets then jamming together on Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf” and joining forces on the Lips’ “She Don’t Use Jelly”

and Weezers’ “Undone (the Sweater Song),” the groups’ big hits from the early ‘90s. “I know that old boy,” Wilson said of Lips leader Wayne Coyne. “Yeah, that was so much fun ... We realized we were playing a lot of the same shows together. You know we’re big fans and I think either Wayne or Rivers had the idea. We just split the sets up so that we would do like three songs apiece and, you know, switch back and forth. It was kind of a goofy idea but it worked out great.” It’s been reported in The Oklahoman that, after that second show, Cuomo told Coyne he wanted to join the Lips. Wilson’s reaction: “Well, he’d have to beat me to the punch, ‘cause I’m a little bit bigger fan than Rivers. About 10 percent. I’d say about 10 percent.”

t’s only fitting that as the American economy reeks of Tom Joad, the hour of the onion burger arrives. That’s because the onion burger was created for cost effectiveness amid the Great Depression but turned out to be an Oklahoma delicacy. Up until recently, the onion burger has been the domain of diners, drive-ins and dives — and there’s nothing wrong with that. Hopscotching from Sid’s to Robert’s to Johnny’s in El Reno to split a Single and a Coney with friends is a slice of heaven with fried onions. But now the onion burger has graduated to one of Oklahoma’s top restaurant groups, A Good Egg Dining. The people behind Iron Starr Urban BBQ, Cheever’s Cafe, Republic American Gastropub, and Red Prime Steak now boast Tucker’s Onion Burgers, 324 NW 23 St. A Good Egg’s claim to fame is elevating classic American fare with flare, but with Tucker’s they’ve kept it simple, according to owners Keith and Heather Paul. “The planning for this concept started probably two years ago,” Keith said. “We knew we could make a great burger, but instead of offering a bunch of different toppings we wanted it to do something different, something from Oklahoma. So, we settled on onion burgers.”

THE BUILDING Once upon a time, an old Texaco station sat on the southeast corner of NW 23 Street and Walker, across the street from Cheever’s. Since it’s original incarnation as a filling station, the building went through a number of faces, including a convenience store/pizza parlor called Las Palmas. When the space came available, A Good Egg bought it with Tucker’s in mind. In order to convert the space into a sleek, modern space with retro touches like their other concepts, an expert was needed. So, they called mom. “My mother, Tanya Turner, is probably the original ‘flipper.’” Heather said, referring to her mother’s house-flipping prowess, which is going on two decades. “She was

the foreman on this remodeling.” Keith laughed, “She’s been the foreman on most of our projects.” The result is a tidy, modern cafe with neon touches and a story to tell through a gallery of oversized photographs by Todd Scott Ballje. “All the art work around the dining room tells the story of A Good Egg,” Heather said. “Each of the people are a part of our history.” Among the pictures is a blackand-white shot of a pensive looking mastiff nose-to-bun with an untouched onion burger. The obedient pooch in the photo is the store’s namesake, Tucker, who is one of two of the massive dogs the Pauls own. The photo was not enhanced, but if you look closely you can see the collar is taut. “I was holding on tight,” Keith said. “But he’s a good boy, I didn’t have to work to hard. Don’t weep for Tucker because he did get to have a burger — no onions — when his photo shoot was finished.

EL RENO STYLE The menu at Tucker’s is as simple as you could ask for: burgers, fries, salad, soda, lemonade, beer and shakes. The end. But corporate chef Robert Black and assistant general manager Justin Hughes went to incredible pains to get the method down and the condiment ratios correct. The technique for cooking the burgers is straight out of El Reno. All-natural Black Angus Beef, which comes from Creekstone Farms at the Oklahoma-Kansas border, is topped with fresh onions and smashed into a hot griddle. Then the onion-dappled patty is flipped and pressed so the onions marry the beef as they caramelize. The only difference I detected between Tucker’s and El Reno was the char on the onions. In El Reno, you’re more apt to find onion edges cooked to a crisp, which isn’t for everyone. If it is for you, request burnt onions, I’m sure Tucker’s will accommodate. The bun is baked at Midtown’s Prairie Thunder Baking Company, specially for Tucker’s. Burgers come in single, double, and the Mother Tucker — a behemoth of more than a pound of beef.

Tucker’s has forced me to re-evaluate my onion burger standards. I’ve always been a mustard, pickles, and onions guys when it comes to onion burgers. But Tucker’s offers grilled jalapeno slices, which I couldn’t resist on my first trip and found that I couldn’t resist the second time either. I’m even considering test-driving mayo in the future. (But there will be no lettuce or tomato, that’s for a different breed of burger within my palate.) There is also a turkey burger but no veggie burger. Vegetarians will have to go with salad and doublefried fries. “We have one guy each shift who does nothing but fries,” Keith said. Fries are blanched in oil before the store opens, then reserved until ordered. Blanching removes starch, which leads to soggy fries. When an order comes in, the blanched fries return to the oil for a hotter session before going out to your table. As for the salad, children of the 1980s will recognize The One Salad, though you might know it as Catalina or Taco salad. We’re talking iceberg lettuce, red onions, pinto beans, tomatoes, grated cheddar cheese, Fritos chips and Catalina dressing. “There’s not a meal that goes out of my mother’s kitchen that doesn’t come with this salad,” Keith said. While dessert is usually the last thing you eat, it’s the first thing you see at Tucker’s. As the line leads up to the register, first you pass the ice cream. Hand-scooped ice cream rests on ice cream shakers, daring you not to order one. I dare not. (Strawberry, for the win!) Tucker’s offers soda, beer, lemonade and strawberry limeade to drink. In the hands of A Good Egg Dining Group, there’s no limit to how far the onion burger can reach, which would shine a light on the state from which it came. The annual El Reno Burger Day would grow exponentially. Perhaps some day, the humble onion burger will go toe-to-toe with the Philly cheesesteak on a show hosted by both Adam Richman and Guy Fieri. But that’s just daydreaming. As we wait for it to come true, might as well do it with an onion burger.

ACCESSORY,

Year-round wearability A GREAT SCARF CAN HELP YOU TRANSITION FLAWLESSLY FROM YOUR SUMMER TO FALL WARDROBE.

Emily Hopkins | Special Correspondent

Summertime is over, school is in full swing, the nights are getting longer, and there’s occasionally the hint of a cool breeze. All signs point to the coming of fall, even though Mother Nature hasn’t completely jumped on the bandwagon. Though temperatures are sometimes still semi-sweltering, you’re likely itching to break out the new fall wardrobe you’ve been dreamily admiring since July. Rather than run the risk of getting heat stroke with that hot leather jacket or those whimsical print tights, use fall’s favorite accessory to de-summerize your wardrobe. Scarves add a bit of sophistication to any outfit and are generally season neutral. Story continues

Becca Chansolme, owner of Violet Avenue, 763 Asp in Norman, said scarves that can be worn yearround are always in style. “The lighter-weight scarves are great because you can double a couple of them up in the winter or wear a single one loosely in the summer,” she said. Chansolme added that printed scarves are still popular. Violet Avenue’s plaid and floral scarf has a different print on each side, making it extremely versatile and easy to match with most any outfit. “Putting on a fun scarf adds some appeal,” she said. “You can pull all the colors of your outfit together and just look really polished.” Using a scarf to finish off a look doesn’t always mean wrapping it around your neck. Slip it through your belt loops or sash it around your waist for instant interest. A long, thin scarf works best, such as the organic and fair trade scarf by Sustainable Threads from Birdie, 566 Buchanan Ave. in Norman. The silk blend organic and fair trade scarf is made in India and is crueltyfree, meaning that the silkworms are not killed because they’re allowed to emerge from their cocoons before the silk is harvested. “I think anybody, given the option of something that was made in a sweatshop or something that’s made knowing that someone was paid a fair wage, would choose the latter,” said Katie Huskerson, owner of Birdie. “That’s an incentive to spend your money well.”

LEFT: Scarves can add an exotic look

to an otherwise simple outfit. Madison Bryant models a hand-painted scarf, which is available at Antique Garden.

But if you’re stuck with a scarf that just isn’t meant to be worn in a variety of ways, opt for one that was created for that very purpose. The infinity scarf, though simply a large circle of fabric, can be wrapped once or multiple times to give the illusion of wearing several scarves. Because the infinity scarf is such a fashion staple, buy one in a neutral color. The shades of black in the floral infinity scarf by Scrapbook, available at Antique Garden, 323

Barbara Fite, owner of Antique Garden, said a scarf can be one of the most powerful accessories in a woman’s closet. “A scarf is just an almighty thing,” she said. “It pulls a look together. Scarves fit bohemian, which is still in, but also there’s a real tailored, clean, more dressed-up look that’s in this year and that’s really a good way to accessorize that look, too.”
