y brother-in-law is a Muay Thai fighter in Lewisville, Texas, and he was in town to cheer on one of his friends at a benefit fight for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation on Aug. 6, so I was with him, baking in a barely air-conditioned hotel ballroom in Norman when LOOKatOKC columnist Nathan Poppe sent a pitch-black text that pulled me out of the pummeling. “Call me now. The Lips got destroyed.” In short order, Poppe followed up with more details on the bad news. “Their lights got blown down. Show on hiatus. Instruments crushed. Need guidance.” Poppe was on hand at the 2011 Brady District Block Party in Tulsa, where the Flaming Lips, Primus, Mutemath, The Pretty Black Chains and others were playing for thousands of extremely hot fans. Given the apocalyptic weather we’ve been experiencing in Oklahoma this summer, heat was the main concern that day, and DCF Concerts had gone to great lengths to keep people cool and comfortable on a three-digit August afternoon. But it was a catastrophic wind and rainstorm, largely unpredicted and entirely unexpected by fans and organizers, that laid out the Brady Block Party, causing $800,000 in damage to the Lips’
famous light rig and several valuable instruments. It was a terrible loss for fans and bands alike. Fortunately, DCF and the Flaming Lips are working to reschedule the event, hopefully when our weather has moved out of this cataclysmic cycle. This was Poppe’s Herbert Morrison moment. Morrison was the radio reporter who was present at Manchester Township, N.J. when the Hindenburg airship caught fire in 1937. He’s the “Oh, the humanity” guy, as was Poppe on Aug. 6. He was terribly and understandably distraught, because Flaming Lips are his favorite band, a feeling many of us share. And yet, Poppe was ready to work. I stayed in contact with him throughout the evening as he took a series of illuminating photos and gathered information for an excellent deadline story. Several national Web sites, including Pitchfork, linked to his story and photographs on NewsOK.com the following week, and in this issue of LOOKatOKC, you can read his column about the experience. Poppe is only a couple of years into his career as a music journalist, but he’s already an essential element of the Oklahoma music scene. Always armed with a camera and good journalistic instincts, Poppe’s omnipresence at concerts sometimes makes me wonder if he secretly has a twin helping him out. At LOOKatOKC, we’re proud to have him on our pages — in times of both musical greatness and tragedy. Oh, and my brother-in-law’s buddy won his fight — his first, by the way. Both he and Poppe came out swinging that night.

felt like I had been thrown into Thunderdome with only a camera to defend myself. I’m being dramatic, of course, but this story is full of freakouts at the Brady District Block Party on Aug. 6. I was there to shoot a Flaming Lips headlining set and write a review of the show. The weather was there to punch downtown Tulsa in the teeth. In the early evening, a rainstorm with heavy winds started tearing through the music festival and toppled the Flaming Lips’ LED lighting rig. It’s that gigantic half circle panel that the band emerges out of at the beginning of every show. It was a blessing no one was injured. Nothing caught my attention more than a tent that collapsed on my noggin when the weather started getting rough. On my way back to my car, a group of rain-soaked fans stopped me in order to ask if the show was still going to happen. They might as well have asked Toby Keith to write a reggae concept album about the joys of cooking pastries. The collapsed and soaked stage wasn’t enough evidence for these fans. They must have really believed in the Flaming Lips and not in the laws of physics. A part of me thinks the fans were optimistic because the Flaming Lips are capable of making unbelievable things happen. The Oklahoma City rockers are risk-takers. They have been doing things such as lighting instruments on fire in the ‘80s (don’t act like you didn’t do crazy things in the ‘80s) and cleaning a flooded stage instead of sitting in a trailer. When you take risks doing the things you love, then you give people the opportunity to believe in what you’re doing. For example, running around in the rain and documenting a disastrous concert wasn’t the brightest thing for me to do. My camera is about as waterproof as a sausage biscuit. I should have started my car and driven back to OKC. But no one was there to cover the event, and I enjoy taking photos, so I ran with it. My story made it onto a few respected music blogs and garnered me more than enough indie cred to buy a dozen lensless glasses. Big opportunities occur at random, so don’t be afraid to do what you love doing, no matter the circumstances. Life is full of red traffic lights. I suggest you pretend they’re all yellow and speed up.

CONTRARY TO POPULAR COMPLAINT, THERE IS MORE TO OKLAHOMA CITY THAN FOOD AND DRINK
’ve heard it before, people: “There’s nothing to do in Oklahoma besides go to bars or go out to eat.” I’ll have none of it, though. I’ve been guilty, of course. I’ve been here my whole life, and sometimes I forget about all of the cool nightlife options out there. It’s an “out of sight, out of mind” thing due to work, proximity and laziness. But no longer will I say those belittling words about Oklahoma — there’s a ton to do other than sit at a bar.
I DANCE STUDIO Zumba is the craze right now. Everybody wants to get up and dance while working off some calories at the same time. It’s the efficiency expert’s dream come true. I Dance Studio hosts dance parties every second and fourth Saturday of the month. Ballroom, Swing, Salsa, Bachata and Argentine Tango are a few of the styles offered at the party. ‘WATCH THE THRONE’ – KANYE WEST AND JAY- Z
T
his dance began 11 years ago when 23-year-old Kanye West built the beats on “This Can’t Be Life,” a Scarface/Beanie Sigel track from Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella compilation album, “The Dynasty: Roc La Familia.” The results impressed Jay-Z so much that West was brought on as a key producer on his 2001 landmark release, “The Blueprint,” and throughout West’s subsequent solo success and Jay-Z’s continued world domination, the two men played important cameo roles in one another’s lives. Jay-Z would guest star on West’s albums as a rapper and subject of some of his protege’s angst (particularly on “Big Brother” from 2007’s “Graduation”) and West would come in as Jay-Z MVP on the mixing board, most recently on 2009’s “The Blueprint 3.” So “Watch the Throne” comes far more naturally than most supergroup-style projects, mainly because these individually confident hip-hop artists have an unusually codependent relationship and an easy chemistry. Beyond the shiny cover lie equally reflective lyrics, as both rappers look back on fatherless upbringings on “New Day” and expound on the pitfalls they will avoid as parents. The improbability of fame gets two distinct views on the instantly memorable “Made in America.” As Frank Ocean of Odd Future croons about Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, their wives, Mary, Joseph and Jesus, Jay-Z waxes philosophical about his beginnings while West winds up bragging about his preeminence. In some sense, these viewpoints are two sides of the same coin, as are the men espousing these sentiments. Beyond the ideas and the “luxury rap” that dependably shows up throughout “Watch the Throne,” this is an astounding collection of inspired music and production touches. Even when touting their own power on “Who Gon’ Stop Me,” these gold-plated rappers offer plenty of reasons to believe that the answer is “no one.” — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘SKY FULL OF HOLES’ – FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE
A
t first blush, the opening track of “Sky Full of Holes” sounds like a sunny anthem to the sultry months of blue skies and endless sandy beach playgrounds. But then a close listen to the words of “The Summer Place” reveals the tale of a 40-something woman haunted by dark memories of unhappy childhood vacations at an old family retreat. The story-songs spun by Fountains of Wayne have always been deliciously deceptive that way, and nothing has changed on the New York alt-pop band’s excellent fifth album (sixth if you count 2005’s delectable double-disc helping of rarities and B-sides). The tunes penned by multiinstrumentalist/singer Adam Schlesinger and lead singer/guitarist Chris Collingwood are always melodically attention-grabbing and immediately engaging on the surface and lyrically smart, sensitive, insightful, provocative and often sad and/or cynical at their heart.
They may taste sonically like they’re all bubblegummy goodness at times, but tracks such as the bouncy “Richie and Reuben,” about two would-be hipster entrepreneurs who turn out to be clueless losers; the soaring acoustic-electric “Action Hero,” which is an ode to an ineffectual husband and father who dreams of leaping tall buildings while doctors tell him his heart is failing; the brassy and unusually positive old-days
remembrance of drunken pickups and the one that finally paid off called “Radio Bar” (a happy ending!); the country-tinged ballad of drunken bumhood, “Firelight Waltz”; and the dirgelike, cello-shaded anti-war song, “Cemetery Guns,” tell tales in sharp contrast to the luscious, Brit-popinfluenced la-la of it all.

‘TORCHES’ – FOSTER THE PEOPLE
F
oster the People’s “Torches” delivers so much guilty psych-disco pleasure that listeners attracted by the surface sweetness of the first single, “Pumped Up Kicks,” might contract sugar shock before they delve into the sickness inside the candy center. Singer-songwriter Mark Foster appropriates the cadence of Ian Hunter’s “Cleveland Rocks” (Foster is a Cleveland, Ohio, native) for the chorus of “Kicks” and drizzles as much sonic confection as he can on the track, which almost obscures the lyrics about a preteen going on a killing spree. Not everything on “Torches” has that edge, but nearly every track has an irresistible piece of melodic bait on its central hook. Musically, “Torches” takes the druggy soul sensibility of MGMT’s “Electric Feel” and runs with it, so fair-weather MGMT fans put off by the stately psychedelia of “Congratulations” will find much to love. “Call It What You Will” incorporates

the syncopated piano sound used so frequently in early 1990s R&B songs and covers it with a layer of wooziness as Foster sings about the common questions asked of bands by fans and journalists. Foster has a talent for taking familiar pop sounds and distorting them just enough to make them appear fresh. Given how averse some listeners can be to outright appropriation, Foster the People still makes “TorchI

ing “Houdini” and so many other tracks on “Torches” ensure that this debut will prove dangerously addictive, even for people who think they know better. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

ideo game makers are bracing for an extended NBA lockout by focusing on former players who made the league popular in hopes of taking the attention away from the impact labor strife will have on their product. In the upcoming “NBA 2K12,” which goes on sale Oct. 4 despite the lockout, 2K Sports plans to introduce a new mode called, NBA’s Greatest, that will feature the league’s top 15 players of alltime and some of the most famous rivalries. Hall of Famers such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Julius Erving will be featured on the latest installment of the best-selling basketball video game franchise. Jordan, Johnson and Bird will appear on three separate covers on the front of the game. “NBA basketball is about the history and the future of the game,” said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing at Take-Two’s 2K Sports. “We love the current game and are looking to optimize it.” But an extended lockout would eliminate daily updates. The video game became popular through its in-depth mode, The Association. The mode includes 30 NBA

teams with daily updates for rosters, injuries, a player progression system, new rookies, trades and free agency moves, and an NBA Development League. “Hopefully people will go out and purchase the game,” said Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith, an avid video game player who appeared in a commercial to promote “NBA 2K11” last year. “They’re just as upset as us that there is a lockout. I don’t know. They might put a strike on video games until the lockout is over.” Greg Miller, the executive editor of
the gaming site IGN, doesn’t expect the upcoming NBA 2K game to sell more than last year’s game, which 2K Sports said it sold more than 5 million units. But with the addition of the former players, he believes the new mode can help the upcoming NBA 2K game continue to stay relevant during the lockout. “Sales will dip, but not super drastic,” Miller said. “Especially if they’re able to push the milestone cover with Magic, Bird and Jordan. If they push that way, I don’t see much of a dip.” Electronic Arts long-running video game series NBA Elite, formerly titled NBA Live, will not release a game for the second year in a row and expects to relaunch in 2012. But in October, EA will still offer “NBA Jam: On Fire Edition,” a 2-on-2 basketball game that is highlighted by exaggerated high-flying dunks. EA spokeswoman said the company announced in April that NBA Elite would be postponed before the lockout started in July. Since NBA Jam doesn’t keep track of player movement through the season, she said the game shouldn’t be affected by the NBA work stoppage. In preparation for the lockout, 2K Sports has already created its own “skeleton” list of the 15 greatest players and rivalries. But the video game company won’t come to a final decision on both until after they have gathered the opinions from fans through their own social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook. Picture a possible matchup of Jordan in his prime against the 2010 version of Kobe Bryant; or pairing one of Los Angeles Lakers squads from the “Showtime” era against this year’s champion the Dallas Mavericks. “All these various scenarios are debated in bars and barbershops,” Argent said. “People are debating about the outcome of these scenarios. Now, we’re looking to end that debate. We feel very confident about it.” – From The Associated Press

‘RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES’

‘Apes’ rises from cult classic to blockbuster
S
ince the days when human captive Charlton Heston railed against those “damned dirty apes” and Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter walked around upright in rubber masks and monkey suits in 1968’s “Planet of the Apes,” CGI technology has evolved by leaps and bounds. And so the chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans that populate “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the surprisingly smart and emotionally resonant attempt to reboot the fallow franchise based on Pierre Boulle’s 1963 sci-fi novel, are indeed a gnarly, frighteningly feral and hyper-realistic bunch. The original “Planet” (widely considered a cult classic with one of cinema’s great climactic scenes) and its four uneven sequels — plus Tim Burton’s lackluster 2001 remake — all demanded a rigorous suspension of disbelief by audiences. To accept the notion of talking apes, to buy into the upside-down world where simians dominated humans and to look past the mock monkey suits meant moviegoers had to subscribe to a pretty far-out “what if” concept. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is far more grounded in realism and a kind of visual verisimilitude that springs from cutting-edge, performance-capture technology developed for James Cameron’s “Avatar,” and that here produces apes that are breathtakingly
realistic and emotive. That realism concerns valid issues of biomedical engineering. And that sophisticated computer technology achieves its highest art in the work of Andy Serkis, an actor who specializes in the kind of motion-capture performances that so brilliantly animated the giant ape in 2005’s “King Kong” remake and Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. In this case, Serkis breathes vivid life, intelligence and roiling passion into Caesar, a gifted lab chimp who falls under the care of human Will Rodman (James Franco), a research scientist for a corporate lab in contemporary San Francisco. Determined to help his Alzheimer’s-stricken father (John Lithgow) and develop a chemical cure, Rodman employs chimpanzees in his research at the sterile GenSys lab, where his bioengineering work on the experimental drug ALZ-112 produces one female chimp with astounding cognitive and communicative abilities. But when the risky testing goes awry and his lab chimps have to be destroyed, Rodman furtively rescues the star chimp’s surviving newborn and takes it home. Dubbing the baby Caesar, Rodman soon discovers that the mother chimp’s gifts have been passed on to her child. As he raises Caesar like a son and charts his amaz-
ing abilities, the scientist struggles to save his fast-fading father. And when Caesar’s protective instincts result in a bloody confrontation with an irate neighbor, the chimp is locked up in the San Bruno Primate Sanctuary, a dank gulag for unwanted primates. There, cruel treatment drives Caesar to marshal his abilities and lead a riotous — and FX spectacular — ape rebellion and escape across the Golden Gate Bridge (that, by the way, leaves the door wide open for a sequel). The human performances here are fine if stereotypical: Franco as the scientist who learns the perils of tampering with nature; David Oyelowo as the ruthless, profit-obsessed GenSys exec; Brian Cox as the devious sanctuary owner; Tom Felton (“Harry Potter’s” Draco) as the cruel keeper who mistreats the apes. But the true wonder of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is in the performance-capture technology and especially in the precise, nuanced acting of Serkis, who fully inhabits Caesar, body and soul, and invests him with such wit and cunning, such regret and rage, such heart and longing that he turns a standard summer action blockbuster into something surprisingly touching and wise.

C
al Weaver is a portrait of middle-age, matrimonial ennui. At home, he’s a bland, straight-laced family man who takes his pretty, high school sweetheart wife, Emily, for granted. At work, he’s a t-crossing, i-dotting cubicle drone who wears sneakers with his khakis and oversize sports jackets. But in the shrewdly written, smartly directed and beautifully acted “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” Cal’s cozy cocoon home life and frumpy style get a harsh jolt of midlife angst when restless Emily (Julianne Moore, a lovely fount of fidgety frustration) announces in a restaurant one night that she wants a divorce. That opening stanza in the film’s intricate domestic roundelay is played for rueful laughs, but it sets up a story (scripted by animation veteran Dan Fogelman) that’s informed by loads of traditional romantic comedy conventions that are then turned upside down and played as much for poignant drama as for warm-fuzzy humor. Everyman comic actor Steve Carell portrays Cal with the sort of bewildered undercurrent of decency

and regret that made his performance in 2007’s “Dan in Real Life” such a heartfelt and appealing breakthrough. In this, he continues his inevitable transition from TV performer to movie star. Cast adrift in the garish, glassy world of singles bars — where predatory playboys such as the cool, sharp-dressed Jacob (Ryan Gosling in a revelatory comic performance) smooth talk their way through night after night of one-night stands — a morose Cal sinks deep into self-pity and listless drinking. Then one night, for no apparent reason, Jacob takes pity on woebegone barfly Cal and decides to oversee a sartorial makeover and to school this forlorn schlub in the oily ways of picking up women in bars. As Cal slowly morphs into a stylishly dressed player (through a series of playful montages), he struggles to keep up his relationship with observant 13-yearold son Robbie (Jonah Bobo, worldly wise), who is nursing his own romantic frustrations in a crush over his little sister’s 17-year-old baby sitter Jessica (former model Analeigh Tipton in a gangly, fawnlike turn). On a parallel track, we occasionally look in on the

dating disappointments of Hannah (the very hot and very busy Emma Stone), a bright law student who smartly rejects Jacob’s smarmy pickup lines and hopefully sets her cap for an uptight legal eagle (well played by singer Josh Groban). Co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (“I Love You Phillip Morris”) do a deft job of juggling diverse scenarios that have a way of dovetailing neatly as the story moves along (complete with a couple of sharp, startling plot turns). Small but pivotal performances are delivered by Marisa Tomei as a wacky teacher who allows herself to be picked up at the bar one night by Cal, and by a smiling Kevin Bacon as Emily’s too ingratiating office mate and illicit lover. The whole thing is held together with old comedy tropes seemingly made new by the vivid and spirited performances of the fine cast. And in the subtle, simple honesty of Carell’s performance, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” offers up a sane, intelligent romance that speaks enduring wisdom to all lovers, young or old. —Dennis King, Wimgo.com

A
n uptight lawyer and father of three switches bodies with his slacker actor buddy in a “Hangover”-style twist on the “Freaky Friday” theme. Jason Bateman plays Dave Lockwood a straight-laced lawyer and father of three who doesn’t know how to take a vacation. He’s been type-A, nose-to-the-grindstone his entire life, and he feels like he missed out on some fun he should have had somewhere. His best friend, Mitch Planko, is a hang-loose actor of dubious credits who has a distant relationship with his father and a tendency to slack. Still, his tales of leisure and loose women sound great to Dave. After an evening drinking, watching baseball and shar-
ing tales of their respective lives, the two men relieve themselves in a public park. Unfortunately, they’ve peed in a magic fountain, and the next day, they find themselves living in each other’s bodies. Mitch’s acting skills will be put to the test in an attempt to play lawyer well enough to handle the big merger; Dave’s morality is put to the test while filling in for Mitch. Leslie Mann gets several laughs as Dave’s wife, Jamie, providing an on-point female perspective despite the film likely being aimed at a male viewership. Olivia Wilde is Dave’s assistant Sabrina, on whom Dave has been harboring a crush. David Dobkin, who helped restart the R-rated comedy resurgence as the director of “Wedding Crashers” is
on board for this one, and he lets his lead actors both embrace and then work feverishly against type. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, who wrote “The Hangover,” provide the screenplay, and this is something of a married man’s “The Hangover.” At a certain point in a man’s life, when you wake up and can’t remember what’s going on, it’s not because of a bacchanalian evening, it’s because you were up changing diapers at 3 a.m. The plot doesn’t always make sense, but the characters are engaging enough and the laughs frequent enough that most viewers won’t concern themselves with plot holes.

‘30 minutes or less’ fails to deliver true comedy
I
n what’s shaping up to be the summer of the rude, crude R-rated comedy, “30 Minutes or Less” is a strong contender as the blackest and rawest of them all. It’s a bleakly comic crime caper that feels like a stoner’s riff on a macabre Coen brothers concept. It’s profane and nutty, it’s fast and furious, and it delivers a fair number of queasy laughs and goofball visual payoffs in a lean, mean 90 minutes or less. Edging out such gleeful summer vulgarities as “The Hangover Part II” and “Bad Teachers” for over-thetop raunchiness, this pitch-black crime comedy is freighted with the added, dubious dimension of being loosely based on a bizarre, real-life 2003 incident that ended in the tragic death of a bomb-strapped Pennsylvania pizza deliveryman. Playing real tragedy for twisted laughs is a dicey proposition, at best. But first-time screenwriter Michael Diliberti at least has the courage of his convictions and goes full-out brazen in carrying them out. And hip director Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”) smartly invests the proceedings with a gritty visual patina, rapid-clip pacing and a raw, jangly, guitardriven rock score that fit the movie’s off-kilter vibe.

The filmmakers characterize this as a “double buddy” movie as it focuses on two pairs of doofus best friends. Jesse Eisenberg takes the explosive lead as Nick, a slacker twentysomething drop-out who is happy enough screeching around town in a soupedup junker delivering pies for Vito’s Pizzeria (slogan: 30 minutes or less or it’s free) and smoking weed in his off hours. His pal Chet (Aziz Ansari) is a substitute teacher on track for a full-time job who nonetheless proves himself as hapless as Nick. The second buddy duo is the profane Dwayne (Danny McBride) and his sweetly stupid pal Travis (Nick Swardson), two lamebrains who — when they’re not cleaning pools for Travis’ ex-Marine, lottery-winning dad, The Major (a hard-case Fred Ward) — hang around the garage tinkering with explosives. The loopy plotline goes like this: Dwayne can’t wait for The Major to die so he can inherit his lottery lucre. So he and Travis decide to hire a hit man named Chango (a funny, creepy Michael Pena). But to raise Chango’s $100,000 hit fee they must rob a bank. Leary of being caught themselves, Dwayne and Travis hit upon what they deem a brilliant scheme. They’ll kidnap some low-level schmoe (that would

be Nick), strap a bomb with a timer on him and force him to pull the bank job. Hence, Nick goes to deliver a pie to a midnight junkyard and finds himself wired into an explosive vest and given an ultimatum – rob a bank or KABLOOIE! So, naturally, Nick rushes to his google-eyed pal Chet, and the two frantically set off planning their amateur heist. And, just as predictably, all manner of comic chaos ensues. While it’s impossible to take any of this seriously, the ticking-bomb deadline should give the action some sense of urgency and forward propulsion. But Fleischer wastes too much time setting things up and establishing the knucklehead bona fides of Nick/Chet and Dwayne/Travis and muddying the plot with a stalled romance between Nick and Chet’s twin sister (Dilshad Vadsaria). The bank heist itself is a laugh bonanza, but the planning and lead-up feel tedious. As a result, “30 Minutes or Less” seems oddly meandering and aimless, and it fails to cook up the sort of tasty, biting black comedy that director Fleischer’s zesty “Zombieland” delivered with such bloody —Dennis King, Wimgo.com efficiency.

Try to fathom 15 million songs — in your brain, on your iPod, in a record store, in a warehouse somewhere. You have a better chance imagining 15 million dollar bills than the number of songs that money could buy. That is the sheer volume of music available through Spotify, a music service based in Sweden that offers listeners access to a frankly bewildering number of albums and songs. Having launched in Europe in 2008, the U.S. version came online in July after years of wrangling with record companies and regulators. The free version of Spotify offers all that music at a slightly reduced sound quality, with commercials interspersed between songs, on a laptop or desktop only. For $4.99 per month, the same setup comes commercial-free, and for $9.99 per month, all 15 million of those songs are available on mobile devices, with audio quality as high as 320 kilobytes per second. Like DVRs, smart phones, tablets and video services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus, Spotify is proof of one undeniable truth about life in 2011: We live in the Age of Everything. Want to watch every episode of “Doctor Who” without changing a single disc? Just hit a button on your Blu-ray player. Got a burning desire to see the first 30 videos MTV showed when it went on the air in August 1981? They are all on YouTube. No time to watch “Modern Family” every Wednesday night? Let TiVo gather them all in a folder for later. This is what Internet proliferation and the miniaturization of technology has made possible in less than two decades. Need proof? Just close your eyes and think back 15 years, if your memory stretches that far. Back then, every home in suburbia organized its living room around a boxy tube-unit television with a blurry 480i display, and it was hooked up to a video-cassette recorder. If you missed an episode of “Friends,” that rectangular box was the only lifeline to Ross and Rachel, but only if you programmed it correctly. “Law & Order” fanatics with a desire to own every episode would be forced to devote an entire bookshelf to their questionable pursuit, and serious cinephiles might have to dedicate a room to their movie collections or else rent a climate-controlled storage space. In a heat wave, all that tape would be reduced to unplayable blobs of plastic.

cover story Furthermore, the only way for most people to store 100 albums of music in 1996 was in a crate, rack or shelf. The average listener’s concept of digital music was a compact disc — if you weren’t an audio engineer, mp3s were still a few years away. At that time, most people were just signing up for their first dial-up Internet accounts, and a seriously pimped-out home computer came with only one luxurious gigabyte of storage. Just a decade and a half later, thanks to vast improve-
ments in computing power and Internet connectivity, the only limits to instant viewing or listening involve legal agreements, in which services such as Pandora, Rhapsody, Netflix, Spotify, Mog or Hulu pay license fees to carry the content. As Netflix customers can attest of late, the sticky world of licensing can cause an Instant Queue to lose a lot of weight overnight. Spotify is not immune (more on that later), but having made agreements with most of the major music labels, the company has covered its bases unusually well.
THE TEST RUN Simply put, Spotify stores its music “in the cloud,” or on a massive bank of servers presumably lodged somewhere in the Scandinavian tundra. Thanks to a workable user interface — rather than
employing Web browsers, Spotify requires a downloadable program for desktops and laptops or an app for tablets or phones — music can be searched by artist, album or track, and it does not take long to see the value. For example, search for The Rolling Stones. Every single album from 1964’s “England’s Newest Hitmakers” to 2008’s “Shine a Light” pops up, ready for listening. Everything in Billboard’s Top 20 albums except for Adele’s “21” shows up in their entirety, and while the record company and Spotify sort out the rights for that one, fans can check out her previous disc, “19.” Spotify can serve as a one-stop source for musical taste expansion: Virtually every syllable sung by Elvises Presley, Costello and Perkins can be found there. The searches for Miles Davis and Johnny Cash can take awhile, mainly because Spotify is preparing to send 50 or more albums your way. Throughout my test, I searched for obscure albums by obscure bands, such as “Face in the Crowd” by the barely remembered Mod revival band of the late 1970s, The Merton Parkas. Spotify had the complete version. Long-treasured gems such as the Incredible Bongo Band’s 1973 classic “Bongo Rock,” the place where a thousand hip-hop samples were born, are there. Lou Reed’s “Metal Machine Music,” one of the most unlistenable albums ever created to fulfill a record contract, is on Spotify, as is Crispin Glover’s “The Big Problem Does Not Equal the Solution, the Solution Equals Let It Be” — both can come in handy for emptying rooms. The entire Ramones discography. Toby Keith’s recorded history. Classical music in abundance. Blues all the way back to Robert Johnson. David Bowie in all his incarnations. Beastie Boys from “Cooky Puss” to “Hot Sauce Committee Part 2.” Country music from Hank Williams Sr. to Luke Bryan. The volume of what is available can create its own brand of shock with listeners, a “deer caught in the headlights” stasis in which it’s hard to choose anything in the face of virtually everything. But “virtually” is a key word with Spotify. The artists missing from Spotify are the usual suspects, the artists who either are big enough to warrant separate legal agreements above and beyond their record labels, have independent and exclusive distribution deals with retailers such as Wal-Mart, or have notorious and loud complaints about digital distribution of their music. The list is not surprising: The Beatles, Eagles, Metallica, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Garth Brooks and Bob Dylan are all missing from Spotify. It’s a shame, but time and time again, most discussions about digital music boil down to whether those same artists have bought into the system. Chances are strong that The Beatles will eventually appear on Spotify: Paul McCartney’s entire solo output is there, and the Fab Four are readily available on Pandora. Because the band only recently made digital versions of

cover story its music available, it’s likely there is an Apple-bound commitment that is keeping The Beatles out of the Spotify system, at least for now. For what it’s worth, those gaping holes can be plugged with personal collections: the program allows users to merge digital files from their computers with their individual Spotify accounts. One other note: Spotify’s technical limitations can wreak havoc on classical pieces, concept albums and DJ mixes. Whenever there is a digital break between tracks, Spotify cannot bridge the sonic gap. This makes listening to the Beasties’ “B-Boy Bouillabaisse” sequence at the end of “Paul’s Boutique” or Todd Rundgren’s “A Wizard, A True Star” frustrating beyond belief. Engineering these recordings as single tracks would be worthwhile, but it seems unlikely that the company would focus on such a problem when it is constantly adding new music.

THE QUESTION OF THE HOUR: PANDORA OR SPOTIFY? Founded by the Music Genome Project in 2000, Pandora created the preeminent set-it-and-forget-it music system: a program in which songs and artists are matched by mood, genre, era, tone and rhythm. And it works beautifully for people who want a personalized alternative to radio. But there are limitations. The average sound quality does not meet audiophile standards and its comparatively paltry 800,000-song database means that your station dedicated to the French group Phoenix will eventually wind up playing Franz Ferdinand, as will almost all stations based on indie rock bands. Nothing against Franz Ferdinand in particular, but that band is the Bermuda Triangle destination for all indieinclined Music Genome matches, the Kevin Bacon of Pandora. Leave your Luciano Pavarotti station on too long and it will probably play “Take Me Out.” Eventually, every channel has an artist that shows up frequently and without welcome. Plus, there are the headaches involved with Pandora’s skip and thumbsdown limits, and rewinds are not an option. With Spotify, users get exactly what they want, can create playlists based on that desire, and may rewind or fast-forward as easily as they do on iTunes. One of the many joys of Pandora is having a service that can recommend artists and songs. If Spotify had an option that created automated playlists based on artists or styles, such a function could reasonably be seen as a “Pandora killer.” Since it does not, think of the two services this way: Spotify is your ridiculously voluminous record collection and Pandora is your remarkably intuitive radio station.

IS SPOTIFY WORTH THE PRICE, AND WILL IT REPLACE BUYING ALBUMS? After using the service for three weeks, I cannot imagine letting go of Spotify, and for a large number of music releases, it will be my go-to service. It is above-board and legal, artists are getting paid, and at $9.99 for the premium service, it is cost-effective for people who would otherwise buy at least one album a month. Ultimately, it is a question of buying that one album, or renting nearly every album for roughly the same price. But some albums are worth buying because listeners identify with them strongly and want to have them in their personal collections, where Internet service interruptions or a technology-destroying electromagnetic pulse can never take them away. Furthermore, the resurgence of vinyl as a popular music medium proves that some music is best experienced in physi-
LOOKATOKC.COM
cal form. Record stores should always exist and thrive, now and forever. On the flip side, some people simply don’t need or desire access to such a deep reservoir of music. They keep 10 albums or CDs next to their stereo, and that is all they need. Mathematically, there is a good chance that one of those 10 albums is Eagles’ “Their Greatest Hits, 1971-1975,” so Spotify is not for them on any level. As for the rest of us, there is little chance that we can ever listen to even a fraction of the music reportedly available on Spotify. There is neither the time nor the sufficiently expansive taste to listen to it all. And frankly, there is music that is simply not worth hearing and is represented in great abundance on Spotify. It is a service that is only as great as its user’s sense of musical adventure. Yes, 15 million songs are probably too much for anyone to experience. But in the Age of Everything, it is good to know that, thanks to Spotify, they are there, waiting, right now.

A perfect combination, food and film

S T O R Y B Y D AV E C A T H E Y, F O O D E D I T O R > Three-star chef Ferran Adrià is widely considered the best, most innovative and craziest chef in the world. In his kitchen, that which was once familiar disintegrates. Each year his restaurant El Bulli closes for half a year – time for Adrià and his team to retire to his Barcelona cooking laboratory to create the new menu for the coming season. Anything goes – except copying oneself. An elegant, detailed study of food as avant-garde art, El Bulli: Cooking In Progress is a tasty peek at some of the world’s most innovative and exciting cooking.
n a cold December afternoon last year, George Lang and I were doing what we do best: Keeping each other from getting our work done. Sometimes it’s reciting dialogue from the Rankin/Bass production of “The Hobbit,” sometimes it’s waxing nostalgic on days of New Romanticism, others it’s extrapolating the talent and success of Mila Kunis to project the future of Olivia Munn. From time to time, food is the subject. For instance, I like to threaten George, a pescatarian married to a vegetarian, that my vegetarian wife and I will buy all the Quorn products from the Crest Market with which we both do trade. But on this particular afternoon, our common love for food and film clashed. We agreed that great meals and great films mark time and are worthy of celebration. We wondered how great a festival celebrating both would be? We agreed if anyone should host it, it would be the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, considering it has both a first-rate restaurant and cinema. So, I said to George, “I think I’ll email Leslie Spears right now.” Within a couple minutes, Spears, marketing director for the museum, and I were on the phone. She loved the idea and told me she’d run it by film curator Bryan Hearn, which she did. Once Hearn got clear of the Sundance Film Festival in February, the slow wheels of planning began to turn. About a month ago, we finally worked out the details, Hearn came up with the perfect films and chef Ahmad Farnia’s crew came up with a menu to pair with the films. The result is the first-ever and hopefully not-last Foodie Film Feastival. The three-day event begins Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m., with “El Bulli: Cooking in Progress.” The documentary follows world-renowned chef Ferran Adria at his Spanish restaurant El Bulli. The opportunity to see this film comes right on the heels of the legendary restaurant closing its doors so that Adria can continue his exploration of flavor unbridled. The film also closes the inaugural festival at 2 p.m. on Sept. 18. On Sept. 16, and Sept. 17, we will screen “Soul Kitchen.” The German comedy revolves around a locals-only restaurant. Through a series of comedic set pieces, the film depicts people of various cultures hop-scotching international borders in pursuit of individual destinies. “Soul Kitchen” begins at 5:30 p.m. both days. Following “Soul Kitchen” Friday and Saturday will be “The Trip.” This comedy starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon follows the two British comedians as they tour England’s finest restaurants for a travelogue. It’s like ordering “My Dinner With Andre” but substituting the philosophy for a tasting menu of comedic one-upsmanship. Thursday through Saturday evening from 6:30 to 9:30, the Museum Cafe will host a Redhook Craft Beer and Food Tasting. Guests can sample five premium Redhook beers paired with artisanal cheeses and savory sides for $25. For more information about the event, go to www.okcmoa.com/see/films. We’ve got some other things up our sleeve, too, and we will release details between now and then. In the meantime, don’t dismiss that that idle work chatter. Maybe Congress should consider some.
> Young restaurant owner Zinos is down on his luck. His girlfriend Nadine has moved to Shanghai, his Soul Kitchen customers are boycotting the new gourmet chef, and he‘s having back trouble. Things start looking up when the hip crowd embraces his revamped culinary concept, but that doesn‘t mend Zinos’ broken heart. He decides to fly to China for Nadine, leaving the restaurant in the hands of his unreliable ex-con brother Illias. But brothers Zinos and Illias might still have one last chance to get Soul Kitchen back if they can stop arguing and work together as a team.
When Steve Coogan is asked by The Observer newspaper to tour the country’s finest restaurants, he envisions it as the perfect getaway with his beautiful girlfriend. But, when she backs out on him, he has no one to accompany him but his best friend and source of eternal aggravation, Rob Brydon. As the brilliant comic duo, freestyling with flair, drive each other mad with constant competition and showdowns of competing impressions, the ultimate odd couple realize in the end a rich amount about not only good food, but the nature of fame, relationships and their own lives.

others never cease to surprise us with what they’ll do to keep their nest populated. But Janet Farhood went to the extraordinary measure of opening a restaurant to lure her son Clayton home. It took nearly four years, but Clayton finally moved home from Indianapolis this year to partner with her to run Nunu’s Mediterranean Cafe and Market, 3131 W Memorial Rd. In March of 2008, Janet opened Nunu’s, which is her nickname given upon her birth in Palestine. Nunu’s, which she spent more than a year planning before she opened it, offers a kind of Middle Eastern food not often seen in restaurants. Yes, you will recognize falafel, tabouli and perhaps even kafta at cafes founded on the power of gyros, but you won’t find gyros at Nunu’s. Nor will you find French fries or Ranch dressing posing as yogurt. “Gyros are like hot dogs,” Janet said. “I like hot dogs, I just don’t want to cook them in my restaurant. Plenty of other people do a good job at it.” What you will find is the kind of food served at St. Elijah Antiochian Orthodox Church’s annual food festival. The kind passed down through generations of Oklahoma’s Lebanese community, which first came to Oklahoma City at the turn of the 20th Century and ballooned into prominence during the World War II. Janet’s family left for the U.S. in 1948 and found their way to Oklahoma not long after. It was then Janet learned to cook, watching her mother, Abla Musallam. “When my mother came to this country, she didn’t know how to cook,” Janet said. “She taught herself everything and eventually became great at it. We did a lot of entertaining when I was grow

ing up. We almost never ate without guests. “We didn’t help her much, but we just watched. And once I got married, I was amazed that I could do the same things. It’s just in the genes.” Apparently, so is the hospitality industry. Abla ran a successful catering business here. Her husband’s family founded Cedar’s Deli in Tulsa, and her brother and sister opened Marco’s International Restaurant many years ago with their spouses. So it was no surprise Clayton chose that vocation when he got out of college. He’s worked 15 years at various corporate restaurants, including The Cheesecake Factory. His first two areas of concentration are delivery and catering. “We think the food we offer is perfect for catering, and nobody cooks this kind of food better than my mom,” he said. Clayton said they’ve recently started offering what they call “Stone’s Throw Delivery” during lunch. “We’ve got a lot of business around us,” he explained. “And we thought it was a no-brainer to offer to deliver to them.” The food Nunu’s specializes in is cabbage rolls, kafta, stuffed grape leaves, tabouli, fatoosh, hummus, falafel, baba ghanouj and, my personal favorite, hashwa. There’s even a po’ boy sandwich that’s been served for 40 years at Cedar’s. “The po’ boy is probably the only non-Mediterranean thing on the menu, but I wanted a cold sandwich for the menu. We’ve always had to cart these sandwiches home to Oklahoma City for my son and my nephews, who just love them.” Hot off the grill, you’ll find chicken and beef tenderloin kabobs. The tenderloin I tried was cooked to absolute perfection - a nice sear withholding a perfect mid-rare as I’d requested. The hummus is lush and tasty, the Greek salad with grilled chicken an embarrassment of riches. As for the tabouli, Janet explained they serve their’s in the traditional Lebanese style that calls for far more parsley than grain. “I have a lady who comes in who likes hers with more grain, so I make it for her that way,” Janet explained. “I’ll make it how you want it, but the standard way we make ours is traditional.”

As for the hashwa, it might be the simplest dish they make but as I was enjoying a sampler platter, I found myself returning faithfully to it. It’s a simple mix of ground beef browned in butter and cooked with rice, cinnamon - but not so much that it loses its savory quality - and almond slivers. I’m certain to a fair degree that I could eat that dish every day, five days a week minimum. The cabbage rolls are second to none. Only those at Jamil’s are even in the picture. For dessert, there is baklava but be sure to ask if they have knafeh bijiban (don’t ask me to pronounce it!). It’s not on the menu and is only available from time to time, but this combination of sweet Arab cheese and ricotta topped with phyllo haystacks and orange blossom simple syrup is truly inspired. Nunu’s offers most of its products in its market. Found in the rear of the store, the market includes a deli case, specialty Middle Eastern goods, various grades of cracked wheat and grain, Middle Eastern cheeses, phyllo dough, Greek yogurt, Jordan almonds, sesame candy, pistachios, fresh buffalo mozzarella, and flatbreads. Janet, who worked four decades in health care, said she’s had to learn to write recipes as neither she nor her mother followed them at home. “I don’t know how to cook in small amounts,” Janet said with a laugh. “I just like to make people happy and hopefully this is a way of doing that.” Not long after Nunu’s opened, Janet said Abla’s memory was with her through the entire process. Nearly four years later, her mother’s memory clearly still never strays far. “It’s like she’s with me. I talk to her. I say, ‘Mom, am I doing this right? How would you do this?’” While Janet’s mother isn’t there to answer, she need look no further to her son Clayton for the answer. “No one cooks like my mom, no one,” he said shaking his head with a laugh, begging dissent he’s certain has as much chance as Tokyo on a day Godzilla’s in a bad mood. “She’s the best.” Nunu’s is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information go online to www.nunuscafe.com. For more information about Nunu’s lunch delivery area, call 751-7000.
