our pop star is getting dimmer. Now granted, we knew that music sales have declined steadily since the beginning of the century, and there is plenty of blame to go around: BitTorrent, The Pirate Bay, subscription music services such as Rdio, Spotify and Rhapsody, waning interest in market-tested pop garbage written by men in their 40s to be sung by girls in their teens, etc. Numbers are down across the board, but at no time in recent memory is the perception of superstardom more out of step with the reality. While I was researching my cover essay on Katy Perry (page 22), I started digging through SoundScan data on her two pop albums, “One of the Boys” and “Teenage Dream.” I expected to see numbers in excess of 5 million for 2010’s “Teenage Dream” — after all, the disc produced five hit singles and the first one, “California Gurls,” was so omnipresent during Summer 2010 that those averse to AutoTuned dance pop were starting to consider sensory deprivation as a lifestyle option. But in the 13 months since its release, “Teenage Dream” has sold 1.7 million copies in the United States. That means that roughly 310,500,000 Americans have yet to buy “Teenage Dream.” Now, you can play this game all day with population statistics

versus album sales, but in 1983, when there were roughly 230 million people in the U.S., “Thriller” was selling 1 million copies a week during its peak. Not during its first week — every week. You could not swing a dead chimpanzee in a red suit without hitting somebody who owned “Thriller.” The thing still sells about 130,000 copies a year domestically, and it is 29 years old. By the way, Bubbles the Chimp is still alive, 27 years old and spry, but the modern pop star as we know it is dying. And the numbers just get worse: Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” sold less than “Teenage Dream,” and yet the perception is that Gaga’s latest is some kind of unstoppable juggernaut. Adele is far less flashy by a long shot, and yet “21” has sold roughly double the domestic numbers of either Katy or Lady, but 3.4 million is about one-third the sales of ‘N Sync’s “No Strings Attached” in 2000. But the promotional end of the record business knows no slump. We hear about Gaga or Perry as if they are selling Britney Spears in 2000 numbers or Madonna in 1989 numbers. It’s their job to make their stars seem as wonderful as possible, but the numbers are not equivalent to the hype. The real income is made on the touring end of the business. If Perry sells out the BOK Center on Sept. 17, she might make more from that night than she’s made for “Teenage Dream” sales. That is probably an exaggeration, but only a slight one. At this point, music sales are really a promotional tool for the tour, the perfume, the clothing line and the “Smurfs” voice work. And considering the budget for her music videos was probably charged to her, you might want to buy a ticket for Perry’s concert, just to cut her a break. After all, every little bit helps.

or a couple of months, the Internet has been alive with the sound of Spotify. The music service offers instant access to 15 million songs. It was the subject of George Lang’s cover story of LOOKatOKC last month, and it’s a beast of a music library. I took to the phone lines to interview a few music inclined Okies to see what they have to say about Spotify. Will Kooi, music lover/ blogger based in Edmond Sometimes even cell phones get carsick. On a road trip from Oklahoma to St. Louis, Will Kooi ran into difficulty with Spotify on his cell phone. The mobile app allowed Kooi to stream anything he wanted from Spotify’s collection, but he was relying on a questionable 3G connection that sabotaged his listening experience. Kooi’s songs wouldn’t finish, he had to restart the application often and switch between tracks manually. Although the soundtrack to his trip was spotty, he vouched for Spotify’s vast catalogue and its potential to attract more than just audiophiles to creating a music collection. up a phone to call Rome. He waited for the venue’s answering machine to list off upcoming shows. Harris had a better idea when he got his hands on Spotify. “Playlists, that’s the thing that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention on Spotify yet,” he said. Harris has created a few Spotify playlists. One shares a few of the bands he has recorded in his studio. His most helpful creation compiles songs from musicians who are touring through Oklahoma. He said it’s not a comprehensive list, but it’s an easy, quick way to dig through a band’s discography. I agree. Tony Romanello, frontman for Tulsa-based band Tony Romanello and the Black Jackets Only a handful of local bands have albums in Spotify’s library. Tony Romanello’s band is one of them. “It feels awesome,” he said. “Any way you can get your music out there cheaply is kind of your goal.” Romanello uses the free desktop version of Spotify. He has found it useful when digging through Ted Leo’s catalog and appeasing his wife’s random requests for ELO. He also does one thing that I’ve done with Spotify. Romanello keeps his iTunes library separate from his Spotify library. He said there’s a difference between music he bought and music he searches for free. Either way he has a prediction for the future of music. “Spotify is the next wave,” he said. “People will stop buying music. They will buy access. Things are going to continue to be more open and accessible.”

LACEY LETT

Local beer options are everywhere these days

I

’ve been drinking local beer since before I knew I was drinking local beer. My friend in college told me to try Choc because it was his favorite. It wasn’t until later that I found out it was born out of Krebs. My former coworker Chase Healey brought over a small batch of beer he had made back in 2007. Any type of homemade fermentation of a food product scares me, but luckily I took a leap of faith in my coworker and enjoyed my beverage. Four years later he would sell his brew under the name Redbud Brewing Company. For the past two years, COOP Ale Works has been the beer about town. They continually serve their beer at local sporting events, music events, and nonprofit events, and the owners even host an annual party at the brewery. The newest local beer on the block is Mustang Brewing Company. Its first full year of operation was in 2010 where they sold 12,000 cases of beer. So far this year they’ve hit the 27,000 to 30,000 range. What I’ve noticed with these Okie brew masters is their passion for the art of beer making and, in the past five years, it seems they are making a whole lot more than before. Maybe it’s Senate Bill 353 that allows Oklahoma breweries to sell to the general public or maybe it’s because more citizens are supporting local businesses that allow the growth. Whatever the reality is doesn’t matter. It’s allowing people like Tim and Carmen Schoelen, Mustang Brewing Company founders, to move from a garage experiment to quitting their day jobs and becomeing a business of brews. After selling their house and cashing out their 401K, the Schoelens created a business plan utilizing techniques of national beer makers, including Sam Adams and Boulevard. They found a brew master, production facilities around the region and a more permanent office in OKC. They are now filling the bars with beers and music. Every third Thursday of the month, Mustang Music presents a local show at the 51st Street Speakeasy. They’ve sponsored artists including Jeff Hobbs, The City Lives, Turnpike Troubadours and Brandon Clark. It’s just another aspect to their growing local support. Their goal is to be the “leading original craft beer brand in the state.” While Mustang Brewing Company is run by a few people, there’s a new brew on the block that’s completely solo. That solo businessman is Chase Healey, the former coworker I mentioned who started Redbud Brewing Company. “My beers are the expression of one person, while others are the result of a company. I don’t think that makes my beer any better, just more personal,” Healey said. Healey’s passion for fermentation came at an early age, growing up around brew masters, so it makes sense he’d

grow up to be one. Redbud serves two beers now, but he’s got big plans and hopefully a little help in store for the future. “My goal for 2012 is 12 limited release beers, three yearround draft beers, and four seasonal draft beers,” he said. It feels like COOP Ale Works has been around for years, but it’s just been since early 2009 that the brewery touched the lives of Oklahomans. I would call COOP the “party” brewery. Their beers and owners tend to pop up at events all over OKC. The names of the beers are as clever as their marketing. DNR (Do Not Resuscitate), Horny Toad and F5 are a few of the wild names. What makes them so delicious is their fearlessness. “We have been described as ‘full flavored’ beers.” I think it’s a combination of our research and the ingredients that we put into our recipes (that make them unique),” Co-owner JD Merryweather said. “We are also not afraid of high gravity.” The amazing part of COOP is their carbon footprint. They are 100 percent wind-powered, use local ingredients and use no chemicals, additives or preservatives. COOP will be at the OKC Zoo’s annual Zoo Brew event Sept.30. Choc Beer is the patriarch of the local breweries. Each of the breweries I talked to have nothing but respect for Choc, which even serves as a production facility for one of the Mustang beers. Choc dates back to 1925 in Krebs. It was made popular when coal miners came to founder Pete Prichard’s home for authentic Italian cuisine and of course, his beer. He ended up in jail a few times for selling illegally, but came out successful. You can find out more of the history with the “story beers.” Pete’s grandson Zack Prichard is the current president and can tell you what makes a great beer, having won dozens of awards since 2009. “Trial and error with a healthy dash of creativity,” Prichard said. Although a bit illusive about it, Prichard said they plan to release new beers and currently have a project in the works. I love that local businesses are thriving in a place where, not long ago, Olive Garden was your birthday dinner and Coors Light was what you regularly drank. Now there are more options from people who you can talk to about their passion. A lot of credit for the success of these breweries is the bars and restaurants that serve them. McNellie’s has gone above and beyond by not just selling the brews, but hosting special “pint nights” for these local brews. Republic, Louie’s, O’Connell’s Irish Pub, 51st Street Speakeasy and dozens more restaurants are making the general public aware of these fine brews and giving them more options for gourmet beer, all touched with a local hand.

‘VELVET’ – STONEY LARUE

W

arm, smooth and surprisingly mellow, red dirt standout Stoney LaRue’s long-awaited second studio album fulfills the promise of its sumptuous title, “Velvet.” The follow-up to the Edmond resident’s debut studio effort, 2005’s “The Red Dirt Album,” “Velvet” showcases a more mature, finely crafted sound that still maintains its rootsy authenticity. Seasoned producers Frank Liddell, who has helmed projects by Tishomingo resident Miranda Lambert, Jack Ingram and Lee Ann Womack, and Mike McCarthy, who has worked with Patti Griffin and Spoon, know just how to help LaRue polish his sound, including his intuitive vocals, without sanding the red dirt spirit out of it. In addition, Liddell paired LaRue with Nashville, Tenn.-based singersongwriter Mando Saenz, and together they co-wrote nine of the album’s 10 tracks. Their musical kinship becomes apparent in “Velvet’s” intriguing, finely woven songcraft. The album opens and closes with a pair of equally wistful but sonically divergent ballads, both featuring eerily beautiful backing vocals from Sarah Buxton and Aubrie Sellers. “Dresses” unfolds “Velvet” with a gypsy-soul tale of heartbreak, while the title track closes the curtain with a lush, romantic slow dance. In between, LaRue stretches his sound in all kinds of interesting directions, from the swampy blues of “Wiregrass” and “Sharecropper” to the Tex-Mex ardor of “Te Amo Mas Que La Vida” to the folksy musings of “Travelin’ Kind,” which includes Womack’s liltingly lovely harmonies. But LaRue’s die-hard red dirt devotees will be pleased to know that he is still cut from sturdy countryrock cloth, as evidenced by the album’s highlights, the experimental foot-stomper “Sirens” and the optimistic anthem “Look at Me Fly.” It’s worth the extra effort to buy an actual physical copy of this CD, since LaRue has wrapped his rich new music in fuzzy red faux velvet. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

‘CONCRETE’ – SUNNY SWEENEY

L

ike most mainstream music machines, Nashville has the maddening tendency to single-mindedly embrace certain trends while thoughtlessly casting aside potential movements. At the end of a long summer when cliched rural-rebel machismo has gushed like heat-wave-induced flop sweat over the country radio airwaves, singer-songwriter Sunny Sweeney’s second album, “Concrete,” breezes in like sweet balm for the ears, even as she boldly explores the harder side of love and

life. The East Texas native released her first album, “Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame,” on Big Machine Records in 2006, and despite critical acclaim, Sweeney’s debut went largely unnoticed. Apparently, the Music City machine wasn’t capable of supporting two strong Texas females devoted to sharp songwriting and old-school country music, and future Tishomingo resident Miranda Lambert had already started her slow burn to superstar status with “Kerosene.” Now signed to Republic Nashville, Sweeney finally is earning some muchdeserved recognition and chart success with “From a Table Away,” the heart-rending leadoff single from “Concrete.” An affecting story-song about a mistress witnessing her lover’s reconciliation with his wife, “From a Table Away” was released in March and became the highest charting debut single for a female country artists since Taylor Swift’s 2006 hit “Tim McGraw.” Sweeney again takes the other woman side with the acoustic ballad “Amy,” a sort of reverse “Jolene” in which she gently chides the wife who has neglected her husband. The singer-songwriter shows off her potent charm whether swaggering through the sultry “Fall for Me” or laughing at her own antics with “The Old Me.” She easily cuts down an unkind ex with the deceptively perkily “Mean as You,” cowritten by Oklahoma-bred songsmith Brett James, and belts through the pain on the deft two-step “Staying’s Worse Than Leaving,” which she penned with Jay Clementi and Radney Foster. If the Nashville establishment has any smarts, it will make room at the head of the table for Sunny Sweeney and keep an eye out for any more talented Texas-bred firebrands.

‘SEEDS WE SOW’ – LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM

F

ollowing two solo albums of gauzy beauty suggesting that placidity had settled upon Lindsey Buckingham’s restless mind, “Seeds We Sow,” his sixth solo studio disc, indicates that the Fleetwood Mac guitarist still has demons to exorcise. Indeed, “Seeds We Sow” finds Buckingham alternating between moments of pop transcendence and exhilarating songs in which he sounds like he might come unglued. It is his most interesting and varied solo work since 1984’s “Go Insane,” the last time he behaved as if he could take breaks from carrying the standard for Fleetwood Mac’s musical legacy and just be a freak. While “Under the Skin” and “Gift of Screws” sounded like the work of a rock god transitioning to indie singer-songwriter glory, “Seeds We Sow” is Buckingham’s first truly independent record, released on his own Mind Kit label, and it sounds completely unencumbered by expectations. The opening title song growls at the ghosts in his past before he lets his fingers fly on “In Our Own Time,” picking wildly as drum machines and blasts of orchestral synths thunder in the background. “Illumination” and “That’s the Way Love Goes” find Buckingham in off-kilter Mac mode, creating manic, multilayered pop music with a noticeable edge of menace. “I can’t see you anymore, but it don’t mean I’m blind,” Buckingham croons on the soaring centerpiece “Stars Are Crazy” before the chorus finds him howling at the sky. But not all turmoil is internal: “One Take” finds Buckingham inhabiting the callous soul of a corporate raider who “won’t be satisfied ‘til the middle class is gone,” before ending “Seeds We Sow” with the shimmering “Gone Too Far” and a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “She Smiled Sweetly,” a song about never being able to let the past lie. Buckingham might always be encumbered with an unquiet mind, but “Seeds We Sow” shows the artistic upside of living with a personal and professional history that curses as often as it blesses. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘Contagion’ spreads its scares with realism

S

teven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” intelligently and methodically traces the spread of a lethal virus, from its seemingly innocuous beginnings to a global outbreak that takes society to the brink of collapse. By avoiding the pitfalls of the medical apocalypse subgenre and unfolding with documentarylike realism, “Contagion” will scare audiences into rampant hand-washing and wholesale avoidance of the peanut bowl at the bar. “Contagion” begins with Beth (Gwyneth Paltrow) sitting with her hand in one of those bowls, talking on a cellphone at the airport after a business trip to Hong Kong. This is day two of the crisis, and Beth is “patient zero”: Everyone with whom she had casual contact is breaking out into sweats, coughing and losing equilibrium. The spread becomes exponential, and when people begin collapsing on trains and the footage winds up on YouTube, a blogger named Alan Krumwiede (Jude Law) becomes the first person to sound the alarm. cern by Matt Damon, is seemingly immune — he’s kept in quarantine in Minneapolis by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials, but ultimately he is released because there are insufficient resources to monitor him. The outbreak is in full force, and Dr. Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) of the CDC is tasked with managing treatment, overseeing development of a vaccine and working with a World Health Organization investigator (Marion Cotillard) to trace the origin of the virus. Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns achieve a pleasant victory with “Contagion” by avoiding all the standard plot points and behavioral cliches endemic to these movies. There is no overwrought shouting during the crisis and no evil military or governmental body scheming to horde the cure or wrest control of society from the powers that be. Ultimately, people do lose control and there is the expected looting of groceries and medical items, but “Contagion” unfolds with a bracing realism instead of following 1995’s “Outbreak” down the crowded path of melodrama.

LOOKATOKC.COM

Refreshingly, the heroes in “Contagion” are people who are simply doing their jobs, such as Dr. Ally Hextall (Jennifer Ehle), who spends most of the film in a lab, working on a viable vaccine. The villain is simply the virus itself and the inevitable chaos that ensues when the suspicious and ill-informed begin to point fingers and assign blame. Soderbergh and Burns stage some perfectly modulated scenes in which this takes place: Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN appears as himself in a debate between Cheever and Krumwiede that breaks down exactly as it probably would — it’s not pretty, but it feels exactly like how the 24-hour news cycle would treat the situation. “Contagion” unfolds over the course of hundreds of days and then incorporates an ingenious device to show just how a world-threatening disease took hold. It never entertains like a traditional thriller, but by removing the plot points that might create a safe distance between the audience and the unfolding drama, “Contagion” spreads its scares with an effective, unsettling realism. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

Helen Mirren is the killer queen in ‘The Debt’

H

elen Mirren may be crowned the killer queen of retired spies if she keeps this up. Less an a year after having played a former British Intelligence sniper turned homemaker in the tonguein-cheek “Red,” she’s back in yet another espionage thriller, “The Debt,” as an ex-Mossad secret agent who is something of an Israeli national hero for her work with two other operatives in tracking down a top Nazi war criminal in the mid-1960s. But while the former was based on a darkly comic, over-the-top DC graphic novel, the latter is based on the deadly serious 2007 Israeli film “Ha-Hov,” and this English language adaptation directed by John Madden from a script by Matthew Vaughan, Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan is the grittily realistic, dramatically potent polar opposite of Mirren’s last cloak-and-dagger outing. And it is much darker. The story opens in 1997 when some shocking news reaches retired Mossad spies Rachel (Mirren) and Stephan (Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciaran Hinds) which could uncover a nasty

secret stemming from the clandestine mission they undertook in 1965-’66 when they tracked down the notorious Nazi “Surgeon of Birkenau” (Jesper Christensen of “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace”) in East Berlin. Jessica Chastain (“The Tree of Life,” “The Help”), Marton Csokas (“The Lord of the Rings,” “Dream House”) and Sam Worthington (“Avatar,” “Clash of the Titans”) are well matched to the older actors as the younger versions of Rachel, Stephan and David, respectively, which makes for remarkably smooth transitions as scenes flash forward and backward in time. Chastain rings particularly true as the younger Rachel, with an admirably — albeit subtly — detailed performance that adopts the voice inflections, gestures, facial expressions and physical movements of Mirren’s mature Rachel. At the same time she is magnetic on screen and at the emotional center of every scene she’s in as the youthfully uncertain yet courageous novice agent, working and living in close quarters with two more experienced young males, both of whom fall for her and struggle to keep a lid on jealousies that could jeopardize their mission. Both Csokas and Worthington smolder at different

levels — the former as the aggressive alpha of the trio, the latter as the more sensitive, idealistic member of the group. And not since Christoph Waltz’s cold-blooded killer colonel in “Inglourious Basterds” has there been a more menacing villain than Christensen’s Dr. Dieter Vogel, who maimed and killed thousands of Jews and always poses a deadly threat, even after his capture, when he’s bound and gagged in the claustrophobic safe house where Rachel, Stephan and David are forced to hide until they find a way to smuggle him out of East Berlin. Tension among the four builds to a nerve-screaming pitch when all hell finally breaks loose, resulting in a violent disaster that all three Israeli agents vow to keep secret — until 30 years later when the truth threatens to surface like a long-sunken skeleton. Part thriller, part character-driven drama, with keenly observed portrayals all around — particularly from Mirren as the long-haunted Rachel, finally faced with the grave consequences of paying for an old mistake — Madden brings this pulse-quickener to a dynamite climax one won’t soon forget.

‘Warrior’ built on grit, guts and heart

O

ne brother is a teacher who struggles to keep home and family together in hard economic times. The other is a brooding brute, home from the war, living with his long-estranged father. Both grown men have daddy issues, issues hinted at in bitter, perfunctory conversations between the brute and his recovering alcoholic of a father. There’s history here — hard-fought, hard-bitten history. Dad, Paddy Conlon (Nick Nolte), is a man of principles, a former wreck looking for redemption, and his boys, Brendan the teacher (Joel Edgerton) and Tom (Tom Hardy), aren’t giving it. “Warrior” is a straight genre picture, a fight movie of the old school. But it’s a mixed martial arts tale, and as such, it’s the best MMA movie ever. A bare-fisted sports thriller with lots of Hollywood melodrama, “Warrior” pits these two brothers on a collision course with destiny, in the ring.

Co-writer and director Gavin O’Connor “(Miracle”) is on sure ground with the battling Conlons, mixing loads of personal crises into a standard-issue sports drama. Brendan needs money to keep paying the mortgage, but fighting gets him into trouble with the school district. Tom, a Marine of few words and much rage, just needs to fight. Brendan won’t let his dad see his grandkids. Tom would rather live with the old man so he can ostracize him from close range: “I think I liked you better when you were a drunk.” The film’s sports-movie journey takes us to the big winner-take-all tourney that both men enter, each with a need to win. That destination is entertaining, but it is the journey and the people who take it that recommend this film. Paddy is devoted to self-help, listening to “Moby Dick” on tape, resolving to train Tom the old way to get him ready for his bouts. The son isn’t having it. Nolte

plays the toughness as a memory, the guilt and wounds Paddy carries are his new persona. Hardy, the next Dark Knight villain, is a ferocious figure on screen (The British prison bio-drama “Bronson” was his breakout performance). He plays every moment with a chip on his shoulder. Edgerton, of last year’s “Animal Kingdom,” is a convincing physics teacher, a husband who lies to his wife (Jennifer Morrison) about his fighting, a man at the end of his tether. It is a brilliant turn as he lets us see the wheels turning with every argument with his wife or boss, every scheme he can think of to beat a superior opponent in the ring. “Warrior” is the first movie built around this relatively new sport to capture the grit, guts, heart and pathos of the great boxing pictures. It might not be MMA’s “Raging Bull,” but it’s good enough to compare to “Rocky” or “Body and Soul” and not embarrass itself or its sport. —Associated Press

‘ATTACK THE BLOCK’

Rating: R (Creature violence, drug content and pervasive language) Running time: 1 hour, 28minutes Starring: John Boyega, Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker

stars

****

‘Attack the Block’ shows its teeth

S

teven Spielberg and his cinematic inheritors wrote the current book on alien invasion, and by their rules, aliens prefer to land in the suburbs. Finally, after all that time on the outskirts of town, Joe Cornish’s “Attack the Block” features aliens invading a high-rise council estate in south London, and the shift of scenery completely changes the game to stunning effect. At the outset, a group of teenage boys led by the charismatic gangster Moses (John Boyega) robs a nurse trainee named Sam (Jodie Whittaker), but she gets away when what looks like a ball of fire lands on a nearby car. She runs just before that fireball reveals itself as a particularly nasty little alien. The boys chase the beastie into a shed, kill it and start showing it around to impress the neighborhood girls, but then thousands of fireballs start hitting the building. This time, each of the creatures is larger, with horrific glowing incisors, and Sam is soon thrust into company with her tormentors to survive against the attack.

Cornish’s directorial debut, “Attack the Block” gets immediate attention for wrestling some bloodygood special effects out of an extremely modest budget, but the joys of “Attack the Block” go far deeper than the immediate horror of the attacking monsters. The group led by Moses are tough kids on the street, but throughout “Attack the Block,” Cornish fleshes them out (especially Jerome, the sweet and brainy kid played by Leeon Jones), showing them as they are seen by their working-class parents and guardians, who scarcely know their boys are full-tilt gangsters pillaging the block to a dubstep soundtrack. Also, the initial perception of the kids gets shifted when they run up against the true villains of the neighborhood, led by murderous druglord HiHatz (Jumayn Hunter). Moses winds up being a great antihero and Boyega is quite a find. While he and Sam reach an understanding and he is marginally doing good for the sake of survival, Boyega and Cornish vividly depict a teenager who does everything for survival, aliens or no aliens. Cornish delivers some surprises about

Moses that offer real insight into who he really is and why he comes on like his own brand of monster. The other standout performance in “Attack the Block” belongs to Nick Frost as Ron, who is running a high-rise marijuana farm in one of the flats — a place so carefully hidden that it offers the boys a sanctuary. Frost is exceptionally funny as the boys’ deeply stoned protector, but the less-experienced younger actors are all up to the task of trading lines with the “Hot Fuzz” star. Cornish has said that a chief influence on “Attack the Block” was John Carpenter, and given that the film takes place entirely at night in a blighted urban landscape, it would run nicely as a triple feature with Carpenter’s “Escape From New York” and Walter Hill’s “The Warriors.” The film is tightly constructed with a swift running time, and Cornish, a talented newcomer, does not waste one of his 88 minutes. “Attack the Block” offers a bracing new take on aliens — where they land, how they look, how they fight and who fights back.

‘M A DDE N 12’

Madden is back, better than ever

L

ast year’s “Madden NFL 11” was a great football game, packing enough new features and improvements for fans of earlier EA Sports versions to justify shelling out more cash for an upgrade. “Madden NFL 12” ($59.99; Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, rated E) also is a solid game when judged individually, but the tweaks seem far less significant than in previous years. EA Tiburon again upped the ante in the game’s visuals, lighting and presentation. The broadcast style presentation is slicker than ever, weaving in team specific tunnel entrances, multiple camera angles and stadium exterior shots. Small touches such as more realistic textures on players’ mesh jerseys and grass blades and snowflakes being kicked up from the field surface are impressive. As a Buccaneers fan, I was excited to hear gunshots from the pirate ship cannon when the Bucs entered the Red Zone - so much so that after the next play, I paused and panned the replay camera up to the rafters only to see empty flagpoles instead of what should be raised pirate flags. Ridiculously nitpicky? Sure. But when a video game franchise is in its 23rd year of existence, these are the little touches that fans find themselves looking for each year. With the continued upgrades appealing to the sense of sight, it’s surprising that the franchise has made such little progress with sound. Gus Johnson and Cris Collinsworth are back in the booth, and though there’s a bit of improvement on last year’s

disjointed play-by-play announcing, there are some serious lag-time issues. “Touchdown” should be declared as the receiver crosses the goal line, not after he’s several steps into his celebration. The game’s player models clearly have been hitting the weight room during the NFL lockout, appearing bulkier than

in past editions. And the new collision system takes those weights into account, so larger linebackers likely will get the better of smaller running backs. The hitting animations are greatly improved, but the usual gameplay annoyances are still there. Quarterbacks take too many sacks

when they appear to have plenty of time to launch a pass or at least throw the ball away. On defense, corners and linebackers often bat down the ball when they should be making an interception, but I guess that too much the other way would make the game too frustrating on offense. This year’s “Madden” changed the kicking and punting system from the way-too-simple flick back-flick up motion to a golf game style meter in which you click once to start, click again for power and then click for aim. It’s slightly more challenging, but a better fit. EA’s new dynamic player perfor mance does a better job accounting for players’ gameplay styles in areas such as consistency and confidence, which can change week to week depending on performance and lead to hot and cold streaks. Another big addition this year are custom playbooks, which can include up to 400 plays and 50 formations. “Madden NFL 12” doesn’t offer any new game modes, but the franchise mode has been drastically revamped. Wannabe general managers can now begin a preseason with a 75-player roster and make cuts before the season opener. A new free agent bidding system allows managers to get into bidding wars for top players in real time, though NFL salary caps still apply. It’s fun to create your own team and design its uniforms and stadiums, but the “create a team” feature is too limited by its small selection of logos. “Madden” should considering something similar to the “NCAA Football 12” TeamBuilder add-on that lets users import their own images. EA Sports again offers us a great game, and with no competition from another brand, a recent “Madden” should be in everyone’s video game collection. But whether it’s worth an annual purchase will depend on the new features you’re looking for and your dedication to the franchise. – From The Associated Press

en years ago next month, the self-titled debut album by a 16-year-old singer named Katy Hudson landed in record stores and promptly flopped, a victim of bad timing on multiple levels. Hudson had a good voice and a pretty face, and the contemporary Christian songs on “Katy Hudson” were engineered to sound like the pop music of 2001 and geared for listeners who prefer their pop with some praise. But it was hard for anything new to get traction in the marketplace a mere six weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, and Hudson’s record label, Red Hill, was two months away from shutting its doors when the CD eked its way into record racks on Oct. 23, 2001 — two days shy of the singer’s 17th birthday. Flash forward a decade, and Katy Perry, now a long distance from God pop, fully ensconced in the machinery of fame and preparing to play Tulsa’s BOK Center on Sept. 17, might just be the perfect 21st century pop star, with all the good and the bad that entails. On her way to becoming a late-blooming “Teenage Dream,” Perry experienced an entertainment industry phenomenon that is rapidly becoming extinct: She was allowed to fail several times before achieving commercial success. After the Christian album failed to ignite, Perry signed to Island Records and worked with Glen Ballard, producer of Alanis Morissette’s

“Jagged Little Pill,” but an album failed to materialize and Perry was dropped from the label, though one song she did with Ballard, “Simple” was included on the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” soundtrack in 2005. Next up, Columbia Records and The Matrix, the songwriting and production trio known for crafting hits recorded by Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne and Miranda Cosgrove. The team (Lauren Christy, Scott Spock and Graham Edwards) wanted to record an album for themselves and enlisted Perry as their singer. Ultimately, the record was shelved and Perry, who wanted to exercise more control over her sound and image, was nearly finished

with a new album when Columbia dropped her in 2006. Finally, Perry landed at Capitol Music Group, which acquired the masters for that album as part of their deal, allowing her to complete the first proper album as Katy Perry, “One of the Boys,” featuring three huge mainstream pop hits, “Hot-n-Cold,” “UR So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl.” While many of her nearcompleted songs from the Columbia sessions turned up on the 2008 album, her hits were the result of an arranged collaboration with hitmaker Dr. Luke (Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.”), who helped transform STORY CONTINUED ON PAGE 25

Perry into an omnipresent, ultra-glossy dance-pop phenomenon. That transformation became complete on her next disc, “Teenage Dream.” The first single, “California Gurls,” was released at the beginning of Summer 2010, and with its Daft Punk-style synth melody, a guest turn from Snoop Dogg and a video featuring Perry squirting whipped cream out of a bra, the song became the inescapable hit of the season. Sales for “Teenage Dream” exceeded those for “One of the Boys,” and so far, the album has generated five hit singles: “California Gurls,” the title track, “Fire-

work,” “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” Why did Perry get so many chances in an industry that rarely gives artists more than one shot at success? It helps that she is “extremely marketable” — her airbrushed sexuality gives her the appearance of Zooey Deschanel held against her will inside the Playboy Mansion and inflicted with a soft-porn makeover. But also, Perry appears to be savvy enough to play every industry game and win them. “Controversial” songs such as “UR So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl” aren’t truly scandalous — they might push buttons, but they do little beyond tricking a few culture writers into wringing their rhetorical hands over

what these songs mean to society. No harm, no foul, mission accomplished. Same goes for that “California Gurls” video: It could be seen as a comment on sexuality in modern media, but it’s really just part and parcel of it. Perry is never so outlandish that she creates a division, and this is a key to her success. While Lady Gaga seems right at home being a “Fame Monster,” Perry seems perfectly willing to be a “Teenage Dream” as long as she can pull it off. It might be a long way from singing Christian pop songs on an independent label, but Perry seems to understand, after years of trial and error, that filling a niche will not fill a stadium or her bank account.

he cold front that blew in a few weeks ago turned Oklahoma City into Munchkinland after a shabby farmhouse from Kansas fell from the sky. If Oklahoma had either hills or dales, the death of the heat wave would’ve been celebrated over them. Everywhere except the corporate offices of Orange Leaf Yogurt, 14313 N May Ave. While those that work for the up-and-coming frozen yogurt company suffered at home like the rest of us, life was good at the office this summer. And why not? Orange Leaf doesn’t only sell desserts that are cool, it’s a cool place to hang out. The stores are designed like living rooms that happen to have yogurt dispensers. And then somebody raided the pantry to put out mix-ins such as gummy bears, cereal and candy bar pieces. Add in some fresh fruit or boba pearls, and you’ve got a tasty treat in a comfortable, kid-friendly environment. If you feel as if you’re seeing yogurt shops on every corner, you are. It’s true, they’re spreading faster than red cedar. None, perhaps, more so than Orange Leaf. And yes, if you’re wondering, Orange Leaf did used to be called Orange Tree. Owner Mike Liddell and his son-in-law Reese Travis bought a franchise in summer 2009. Liddell, chairman of Gulfport Energy, liked the results so much he bought the company and installed Travis as chief executive officer and settled on the name Orange Leaf A little more than two years later, Orange Leaf is set to open its 111th store on Nov. 11 in Louisville, Ky., boasting franchises in Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Louisiana, Indiana, Texas, Florida, New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Utah, Washington, Tennessee and Australia. Since Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, Travis decided to partner with A MillionThanks.org, which collects hundreds of letters daily from folks looking to thank our troops. Orange Leaf hopes to collect 1 million letters of thanks by Thanksgiving. No purchase is necessary to stop by and deliver yours. But who would want to skip out on flavors covering practically every known berry to cakes and variations on chocolate? If you struggle deciding on what flavors to try, download Orange Leaf’s new app, which was released in July. Not only can you find your nearest yogurt filling station, but you can devise your day’s flavor combination on the way. As for me, I go for the basic tart yogurt with some bobas, berries and pecans. And I don’t need a heat wave to inspire me.

moderneyes YOUR AUTUMN LOOK

Heather Warlick Moore | Mood Publication Editor

This fall’s makeup trends are bold, bright and colorful. In Mood we show you how to get three of the season’s sexiest makeup looks: the red hot lip, the colorful cat eye and the modern take on smoky eyes.

LOOK ONE:

the bold red lip Give your skin a subtle foundation with a light tinted moisturizer..

Begin with a clean palette.

Using a highlighter such as Mary-Lou Manizer, used by Alex Mendez-Kelley, makeup artist and owner of The Makeup Bar, brush over the areas where light reflects on your skin — your forehead, tops of your cheekbones, under your brow bone, and on the inside corners of your eyes.

Smooth a subtle cream blush on the apples of your cheekbones for a natural flushed look. Mendez-Kelley uses Matte Gloss from Lipstick Queen, which is a multipurpose product you can use on your lips and cheeks.

Brush on a light shimmery eye shadow in a Champagne or similar neutral. With a medium shimmery brown, accentuate the brow bone. Highlighter “gives you that angelic, soft, glowing look.”

Line lips with a liner the same shade as your red lipstick.

Fill in the lips with red lipstick. MendezKelley used a matte “Sinner Red” from Lipstick Queen.

Fill in eyebrows (if needed) with a brow pencil. Mendez-Kelley recommends the Universal Brow pencil from Brenda Christian.

Using liquid eyeliner, paint a thin linee along the top lashes only. Then, using an eye shadow applicator or a Q-tip, carefully apply a little charcoal eye shadow over the liquid liner and blend upward into the rest of the eye shadow.

Finish the look with a healthy coat of mascara. Mendez-Kelley uses a Two Timer two in one mascara from The Bomb.

colorful cat eyes

LOOK TWO:

Follow steps one through three from the bold red lip instructions.

Apply a shimmery eye shadow in Champagne gn nee or a similar color all over your eyelids

For your colorful cat eye, choose a pencil liner such as Pop’s Blue with a slanted applicator.

Draw a straight line in short pulses with the color along the top of your upper lash line all the way to the inner corner of your eye.

To draw the extended cat eye, use the line from your bottom lash line as a guide and draw the line about ¼ inch out and upward from the outer corners of your eyes.

Thicken your eyeliner as much as you like — the thicker, the more dramatic it will be. With a bronzer, brush a soft “c” shape from your temples to below your cheekbones. Alex Mendez-Kelley uses bronzer instead of blush for this look because, she said, “I think when you’re doing something this dramatic you should let this be the drama and the rest kind of take a backseat.”

Using the same logic, keep your lips simple. No need for liner, just apply a nude, mauve or other natural color gloss.

With a medium shimmery mery brown eye shadow, accentuate ntuate the crease just under your brow bone.

Finish the look with a thick coat of mascara or false eyelashes.

LOOK THREE:

the modern eye

Follow steps one through three from the bold red lip instructions.

Y can use almost any color to start your modern You eye. In this case, Alex Mendez-Kelley used a teal eyeshadow from the smoky eye palette from Pop. Brush your base color from the lash line upward, blending toward the crease.

Choose a contrasting medium color such as a deep shimmery mme bronze and apply it generously along long the natural n crease. Use the same color olor along your lower low lash line.

Bold lip colors go well with th this season’s modern eye as long g as you keep the rest of your face simple. mple. Here, Mendez-Kelley chose a Bordeaux aux lip gloss from Girlactik.

Give your skin a glow and accentuate your cheekbone with a light bronzer or neutral blush.

Along your top lash line, draw a soft line with a color similar to your base eye shadow color. Mendez-Kelley used a Pop eyeliner pencil in teal. Use the same pencil to line the inner rim of your lower lash line.
