eople who watch this space know that the rapid shifts in how we consume media seem to have taken permanent residence in my thoughts — in the last issue, I was raving about Spotify, the streaming music service that made its U.S. debut last month, and earlier this summer I discussed the current experiments with fast-tracking movies to on-demand services after their theatrical runs. But next week in LOOKatOKC, we’re going to bring it all together. Consider this: if you were born in 1990 and are currently in your first year of legal drinking, your childhood was spent during the most rapid turnover of media technology in modern history. Your parents got their first dial-up Internet account when you were going to kindergarten. You watched VHS tapes until about 4th grade, when your mom and dad bought their first DVD player, and around the same time, your older brother or sister started downloading pirated mp3s on Napster. Then, around the time you were in middle school, rich friends started getting iPods, and by high school, nearly everyone had them. Sometime around graduation, your parents were learning how to use a DVR. They might still be. Now, we are at a point where technological change is so swift and fluid that new things come along on almost a weekly basis. So the next LOOKatOKC will focus on the new things in all areas: movies, television, music, news, gaming and computers, and whether they might all end up in the same place — one box, if you will. And of course, there’s always the chance that it will all be out-of-date by the time that issue leaves the stands. But as chronic early adopters of technology, we’ll just assume that by the time you’re finished reading, you’ll be making an appointment to have an Apple implant inserted in your brain.

Stop, slow down and listen
A
handful of inevitabilities occur at almost every concert. A band’s timid reminder about its merch booth. Awkward banter between songs. At least one annoying person who chooses to dance wildly in the front row instead of behind a dumpster in the parking lot. A music community is born when these inevitabilities combine with musicians, fans and venues. However, I think it’s tricky to define a music community. Is it possible to have a music community if there’s a bunch of shows happening every weekend in the back of a popular bar? Not quite. A music community is all about interaction. Musicians are at the core of getting people excited about music. Performing provides a basic incentive to inspire people to participate in the local music scene. For me, being in a band would not only be daunting. It takes dedication, patience and bravery to perform and collaborate with other artists. I still get pouty if my iPod doesn’t shuffle. For a music community to flourish, fans have to take time to slow down and listen to the music being created in Oklahoma. I constantly hear people saying they enjoy all genres of music. I challenge music lovers to prove it. There’s a lot of beauty and originality in local music. It’s not an accident that it’s happening here. Increased interaction between fans and bands is what creates a healthy music community, which doesn’t live in a single festival or show. A strong music community lives in unseen efforts and hard work. It happens when a band agrees to collaborate. It also happens when a fan steps into a record store and supports a band not on the radio. It doesn’t take much to be the person pushing to the front of a concert. Just make sure to take it easy with the dancing.

Sunday is a fun day for many
S
MANY BARS NEED A DAY OF REST, BUT SOME CELEBRATE A SEVEN-DAY WORK WEEK unday is a day of rest. I get it, but for those who get Mondays off, there’s a reason to celebrate on Sunday. How many times have tried to go to a bar on a holiday weekend, and the doors are locked? It’s happened to me too often than I’ll admit, but some bars thrive on the Sunday nightlife scene. The cream of the crop for Sunday nightlife has to be The Deli in Norman. It’s Hosty Solo Sundays, and it’s where the “Oklahoma Breakdown” became famous. It’s also home of the infamous red cup. Cheap beer in a large red cup is what it’s all about. Seriously, if you don’t get there early you could be standing in line, and if it’s a winter holiday that would not be fun. The Dugout in Northwest Oklahoma City has been around for years and their infamous Sunday night drown night is what it’s all about. Free beer for women 9 to midnight and $7 for men until midnight. It has a reputation for being a good time and the Italian stuffed meatballs have a reputation for being a good bite. Plus you can go across the street and play laser tag, which is more of what I’m into — beating kids at games completely rules.
The Wreck Room is for the younger crowd. I remember going there when I was 16 and thought I was cool because my mom made my sister take me with her to the club. It was a great time: drag shows, lots of dancing and fantastic people watching is what the Wreck Room is about for me. For the first official day of the week, they feature SyberActive Sundays. Goth, industrial, synth pop, new wave, electro clash and more fill the air with its electronic waves. If you’re looking for a drink and some karaoke too, head next door to the Copa. Karaoke with Raymond is going on until 2 a.m. Just imagine the photo ops you will have singing in front of lighted palm trees. What spawned the desire to write this article stems not just from the many locked bar doors I’ve tried to go through, but also the reputation The Drunken Fry has for their Sunday drown night. I’ve passed by Drunken Fry on my way home from a long weekend in Tulsa and there were a ton of vehicles in the parking lot. It caught my attention, and lo and behold, it was drown night. Eight dollars for Pabst Blue Ribbon. It’s a great place to grab a drink and eat the delicious fries and sauces. I believe I’ll be trying the “Sidecar is Dead” sauce with sun dried tomato basil aioli. To the right is a list of bars in the city and their Sunday night status. Think of this as your know-what-to-do-on-Sunday list. Tear this page out, fold it up and keep it in your wallet. When another Monday holiday comes around with annoying relatives, you might need it.

‘LP1’ – JOSS STONE
W
hen it comes to presenting herself in a pure, direct and honest way, Joss Stone is the young woman who cried wolf. Since debuting in 2004 with “The Soul Sessions” when she was 16 years old and creating a classic R&B vibe with producer Betty Wright that was not broken and did not need fixing, Stone has poured on the “American Idol”-style oversinging, employed break-beats and guest rappers to goose her sales and complained frequently about record-label pressure. The titles of her last two albums, “Introducing Joss Stone” and “Colour Me Free,” strongly hinted at reinvention or emancipation, but it was becoming hard to keep the story straight: Was Stone a soul survivor trapped in the body of a barefoot British blonde, or was she a frustrated dance diva being forced to sing classic R&B against her will? Now that Stone is finally out of her contract with EMI, the title of her fifth album, “LP1,” is yet another attempt to hit the reset button. What came out of the one-week Nashville, Tenn., session produced by Dave Stewart is roots-based rock resembling Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. “LP1” is at its best when Stewart records Stone with bare-bones arrangements, letting her fiery vocals on the bluesy kissoff “Landlord” live and breathe. The low-key tracks such as “Take Good Care” and her duet with Stewart on “Picnic for Two” offer Stone a chance to lay back and let the soul come naturally. But Stone, who joins Stewart, Mick Jagger, A.R. Rahman and Damian Marley in a supergroup called SuperHeavy on a debut release this fall, often over-sings when the volume gets higher on “Cutting the Breeze” and “Don’t Start Lying to Me Now,” competing with everything around her. Historically, this is Stone’s near-fatal flaw — restraint is rare, and while “LP1” shows the singer making better choices, she still has a long way to go. Hopefully, “LP1” represents an actual direction for Stone, rather than yet another in an uncommonly long series of false starts. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘OSAKA RAMONES’ – SHONEN KNIFE
S
till cute and cutting-edge after all these years, Shonen Knife serve up a slice of 30th anniversary cake in the form of a tribute to one of their earliest inspirations on “Osaka Ramones.” Formed in Osaka, Japan, in 1981 by sisters Naoko and Atsuko Yamano and friend Michie Nakatani, only singer-guitarist Naoko remains, with new friends Ritsuko on bass and Emi on drums, but the sweet-tart brand of punk-pop panache and broken English harmonies that made them the darlings of the worldwide alt-rock elite in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s is still as potent as ever, especially on the Ramones’ hard-charging trademark tunes “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School.” “Rockaway Beach” is a runaway steamroller of stripped-down guitar, bass, drums and youthful female vocal sass while “Sheena is a Punk Rocker” is fraught with a feminine feistiness that’s a far cry from the guileless, childlike sweetness of SK’s earlier, original work. Coproduced by Goo Goo Dolls’ Robby Takac and recorded over the past year in Osaka and New York City, the album title is taken from a side project that’s been an on-and-off diversion for the trio for many years. This probably accounts for the tightness and assurance with which these women deliver such Ramone staples as “The KKK Took My Baby Away,” “Psychotherapy,” “We’re a Happy Family” and “Beat On the Brat.” No wonder such American rock groundbreakers as Kurt Cobain and Thurston Moore both claimed to be Shonen Knife’s No. 1 fan. Find out why Cobain was “transformed into a 9-year-old girl at a Beatles concert.” “Hey! Ho! Let’s go!” — Gene Triplett, Entertainment Editor LOOKATOKC.COM

video game review
There are some ‘hellish’ games out there
W
hat makes a video game scary? Does it need zombies, vampires, werewolves or other characters from the Halloween costume catalog? Or is the essence of horror harder to define — something to do with atmosphere, or plotting, or finding some other way to get into the player’s head? I ask because I’ve been playing two very different games that have all the trappings of horror fiction but didn’t scare me. “Shadows of the Damned” (Electronic Arts, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99) takes a familiar character type — the demon hunter — and sends him on a tour of hell. Nothing original there, although this may be the most stomach-turning vision of hell ever. And I mean that literally, since the streets are filled with stomachs — and livers, and intestines, and other unattached organs. The demon hunter, named Garcia Hotspur, is accompanied by Johnson, a floating skull that can transform into a variety of firearms. In each level you’re attacked by waves of junior demons, most of whom can be dispatched with a few rounds. You’re then escorted into a duel with a much larger monster. Unfortunately, most of these “boss fights” boil down to the same technique: Find the enemy’s weak spot (which is conveniently glowing red) and plug it again and again. The combat is broken up by puzzles based on light and dark. The demons thrive on darkness, so if you can switch on the lights (by shooting a laughing goat head), they’ll disperse. But sometimes, Hotspur cannot hit a target

unless he’s surrounded by darkness, which is a problem, since it eats away at his health. In this video game image released by Electronic Arts, a scene is shown from, “Shadows of the Damned.” The creators of “Shadows,” Goichi Suda (aka Suda51) and Shinji Mikami,

previously collaborated on “Killer 7,” one of the most disturbing games of the last decade. “Killer 7,” though, was just too weird to reach a mass audience; this collaboration is considerably less ambitious and more predictable. It does have some witty touches, including cleverly designed boss monsters who combine flesh, machinery
and architecture. And Akira Yamaoka’s soundtrack, ranging from industrial rock to inappropriately bouncy lite jazz, is wonderful. On the other hand, it’s undermined by Suda51’s penchant for sophomoric humor. Johnson, for example, eventually turns into “the Hot Boner” — and if that makes you laugh, we’re just getting started. The outlandishness of “Shadows of the Damned” is initially impressive, but in the end, I expected more from the Suda-Mikami reunion. Twoand-a-half stars out of four. The title “F.E.A.R. 3” (Warner Bros., for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99; PC, $49.99) might lead you to expect full-blown horror, but the fright factor in this series has given way to all-out combat. The acronym stands for “First Encounter Assault Recon,” a special forces team created to deal with paranormal phenomena, and you play a supersoldier known only as Point Man. In an earlier chapter, we learned that Point Man and his brother, the psychopathic Paxton Fettel, were the offspring of a powerful psychic named Alma. In “F.E.A.R. 3,” the boys are on the run from Armacham, the military contractor who created them. Escape means killing hundreds of Armacham employees, and the game wastes its interesting setup to become a formulaic first-person shooter. Still, while the solo campaign in “F.E.A.R. 3” is lackluster, it is more fun to play with a friend — one handling Point Man, the other Paxton. And it has an assortment of clever four-player modes, both cooperative and competitive, that more social gamers will enjoy. Just don’t expect to get scared. – From The Associated Press

A salute to America from the ‘Captain’
C
hris Evans stars as Steve Rogers, a physically unfit military reject during World War II who becomes the star-spangled superhero Captain America. He’s transformed from a scrawny Brooklyn scrapper to a chiseled, enhanced Adonis through the power of Dr. Abraham Erskine’s super soldier serum. While the movie’s better-living-through-chemistry origin might inspire snickers in this day of steroids and human growth hormones, the movie plays its superhero origin straight. The serum that gives Rogers his powers isn’t as important as the man Rogers is: a true-blue American who wants to aid his country. Erskine (Stanley Tucci) picks the earnest, determined Rogers as a candidate for his super soldier serum, but he still has to persuade the proper yet steely Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and the gritty,
grumpy Col. Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones). Even after Erskine’s formula works its magic on Rogers, he’s still kept from the front, instead being signed up as a war bonds pitchman for the United Services Organization (USO). While he’s a hit on the homefront, the soldiers in the field aren’t as thrilled with his prefab success — until a situation arises in which he proves he’s the genuine article. Captain America is eventually set loose on his opposite number — the similarly enhanced Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), who’s the head of the Nazis’ deep science division, HYDRA. Taking his good friend Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and the rest of his Howling Commandos with him across enemy lines, Captain America strikes at the heart of HYDRA. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the screenwriters for the three “Narnia” films, provide a story rich with detail from the Marvel Comics. This movie, set during the early 1940s, is a throwback.
For most of the movie, you feel as if you’re watching a movie that could have been made during World War II. Evans brings an aw-shucks earnestness to the role that’s just short of Jimmy Stewart as a superhero. Director Joe Johnston, who channeled similar 1940s nostalgia in 1991’s “The Rocketeer,” here creates a sepia-tone piece of Americana that’s as wholesome as a big slice of apple pie. Johnston worked as a designer on “Star Wars” and shared an Oscar for visual effects on “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and he brings sensibilities from both of those films to “Captain America: The First Avenger.” The film does lead into next summer’s “The Avengers,” but it doesn’t feel like only a prelude. It feels like a salute — to the America that created Captain America and to the belief that greatness continues to live within our nation’s people, waiting only to be unlocked.

A perfect mash-up of a movie
D
irector Jon Favreau mixes sagebrush shoot-’em-up with science fiction freakiness in “Cowboys & Aliens” and fires off a mash-up of movie genres that’s lightweight fun at a warp-speed gallop. There’s a whole posse of writers credited for this thriller (six in all) which is usually a sign of trouble ahead, but all potential narrative bullets are dodged, the top-hand stars are all on target, and the special effects, nonstop action and gritty period look of this piece should satisfy horse opera enthusiasts and scifi fans alike. Daniel Craig switches from James Bondian martinis and tailored tuxes to the rotgut whiskey and brush-scarred chaps of the iconic, laconic Western hero, filling those boots with a minimum of strain as a stranger who wakes up in the middle of the desert with an odd-looking shackle on his left wrist and no memory of who is, but possessed of an instinctual and deadly ability to take down three local yokels who happen by and attempt to take him prisoner for a possible reward. After appropriating boots, cartridge belt, six-gun and hat (bad choice there) from the three corpses, he’s fully outfitted for the hero role and, in true loner

hero tradition, rides one of the dead men’s horses into the dusty town of Absolution, New Mexico Territory, where he immediately gets crossways with its inhabitants. First he puts down the bullying antics of a loudmouth named Percy Dolarhyde (a superbly obnoxious Paul Dano), who happens to be the spoiled son of powerful cattle baron Col. Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford, convincingly rawhide-tough), who owns the town and tells everyone in it when to jump and how high. Then the sheriff (Keith Carradine) recognizes the stranger from wanted posters as one Jake Lonergan, leader of a notorious outlaw gang. Now our hero has a name, plus the daunting task of resisting arrest against the sheriff and his handful of armed deputies, which he almost manages in heroic saloonbrawl fashion before he’s coldcocked from behind by a mysterious, sad-eyed beauty named Ella (a winning Olivia Wilde), who wears a pretty gingham dress and a great big revolver around her tiny waist. Ella doesn’t want Jake leaving town because she knows who he is and the fantastic tragedy that he’s been through, and that he is the only one who can help her in a desperate search. hurling fiery thunder and snatching people from the street, Jake suddenly recalls what that cumbersome bracelet is for and the townspeople realize he may be their only hope of defeating the “demon” marauders and recovering their abducted people. What follows is plenty of good old fashioned gunplay and bare-fisted action as Dolarhyde and his men, Jake’s former outlaw gang and a band of Chiricahua Apache warriors form an uneasy alliance against some of the scariest looking bug-eyed creatures ever created by CGI. Who’d have thought Favreau, back when he was a young hipster making smart and funny little indie comedies (“Swingers,” 1996; “Made,” 2001) with his buddy Vince Vaughn, would ever become such a sure-handed crafter of such big-budget blockbusters as “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,” and now “Cowboys & Aliens.” Crossbreeding the Old West with the outer limits is nothing new, dating back to the 1935 serial “The Phantom Empire,” when singing cowboy Gene Autry discovered a race of advanced humans living deep beneath the earth. But Favreau has given the idea a stellar 21st century reboot that’s a good bet to outdraw all comers at the box office on its opening weekend. —Gene Triplett, Entertainment Editor

‘FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS’
Rating: R (Sexual content and language) Running time: Two hours Starring: Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake, Patricia Clarkson, Woody Harrelson.
****
‘Friends’ offers the benefits of a good romantic comedy
W
ill Gluck’s quick-witted and altogether engaging romantic comedy “Friends With Benefits” dares to follow the standard plot outline for rom-coms while simultaneously taking a torch to it. This film barrels through with tightly crafted dialogue and great comic timing. It always helps to have fully invested lead actors, and stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis look and sound like they are having a blast. “Friends With Benefits” employs a familiar premise, especially for viewers who suffered through “No Strings Attached” with Ashton Kutcher and Kunis’ “Black Swan” co-star, Natalie Portman, but the concept of two busy young people choosing to engage in a physical, nonromantic arrangement is the only thing these two films have in common. Anyone who has grown to loathe paint-by-numbers romances will know they are in the right seat when Jamie (Kunis) passes a poster for “The Ugly Truth” and practically spits out the line, “Shut up, Katherine Heigl, you stupid liar!”
Jamie is a corporate headhunter recently dumped by her boyfriend (Andy Samberg) because she can “be a little delusional. Also, you have, like, really big eyes, and that freaks me out sometimes.” She recruits West Coast gossip-blog wiz kid Dylan (Timberlake) to be the new art director at GQ in New York, and he’s just gone through his own remarkably barb-filled breakup. They hit it off as friends, but they both have ... needs. So “Friends With Benefits” is all about navigating that emotional terrain between two people who genuinely like each other and have chemistry. While every other iteration of this plot pivots on attraction and convenience followed by feelings, misunderstanding and finally love, Jamie and Dylan actually get to know each other. When the inevitable begins to happen, it’s because there is — miracle of miracles — a real, palpable foundation for those stirred emotions. Both Kunis and Timberlake are great here, with Kunis delivering the kind of seemingly effortless comedic performance she hinted at in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and Timberlake playing along like they’re two synced-up musicians. But then Gluck, who directed
2010’s impressive and hilarious “Easy A,” also creates an ensemble of supporting characters and players who never feel like space fillers. The standouts are Woody Harrelson as Tommy, the GQ sports editor who completely flouts first impressions and dependably steals every scene he is in, and Patricia Clarkson as Jamie’s 1970s groupie mother, who does likewise. Clarkson previously appeared in “Easy A,” and it’s clear she enjoys the energy of Gluck’s dialogue — a repertory company seems to be coalescing around the writer-director. Much like Jamie and Dylan, who both have been burned by romance, the prospective audience for “Friends With Benefits” has been practically charred by a seemingly endless parade of limp romantic comedies. This is a corrective measure filled with wit and surprise, crafted to suit the strengths of its lead players. Furthermore, it makes a great case for putting Timberlake and Kunis back together in another strong vehicle. Hopefully, Gluck is already on the case.

ustin Timberlake spent much of his career singing songs that reflected the romantic situations of people his age, but he rarely saw romantic comedies that spoke to his generation. And when Timberlake first read the original script for “Friends With Benefits,” he and co-star Mila Kunis could see the beginnings of that kind of movie. “The premise for it felt generational, and I think we saw that as an opportunity to almost start from scratch and make situational humor out of the idea of this movie,” Timberlake said during a press day for “Friends With Benefits” at Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica, Calif. Fortunately, director Will Gluck was happy to collaborate with the two actors. Working from the original script by Keith Merryman and David A. Jamie and Dylan, two young professionals burned by past relationships who forgo romance and instead choose a physical relationship between friends. Because Timberlake, 30, and Kunis, 27, established a rapport early on, the process of making “Friends With Benefits” became an exploration of not just modern romance, but the effect of romantic comedies on the expectations of romance. “We have a very honest banter between a man and a woman,” Timberlake said. “We said, ‘Let’s look around and see what is ridiculous’ — for instance, the romantic comedy and the falsification of romantic comedies and the force it has had on the woman’s point of view. There is a point where I say, ‘Why do women think they have to manipulate me to get what they want?’ and she says, ‘That is their experience with romantic comedies.’ To be able to comment on something empowers your generation, and it empowers the movie. “There were a lot of opportunities for a longer rehearsal period, where we could workshop this and say, ‘What is your point of view as a person about this situation?’ and that is where the best comedy comes from: an honest place,” he said. This approach especially helped during the film’s more intimate scenes, in which Timberlake and Kunis’ characters speak frankly about what they like and what makes them uncomfortable. “The bedroom scenes were funny because we got to have conversations and banter while we were in the middle of the act,” he said. “I think the audience can feel more comfortable because everyone has been in those situations but nobody talks about them. So seeing a couple of people who aren’t a couple actually talking about it as it is happening made for a lot of funny, funny situational humor.” That frankness took “Friends With Benefits” far afield from its original, safe for-the-masses script. Timberlake said he could not be happier with the result. “The movie was supposed to be PG-13, and we bargained hard to get an R rating to make it more real so that we didn’t have to feel that we were doing the cutest version of a sex scene,” he said. “If the envelope got pushed, it was because the three of us (Timberlake, Gluck and Kunis) were all laughing and that felt like the proof was in the pudding. We were moving the film in a direction that felt real to a generation, and the studio was comfortable with that. “I think that if you care about what it is you are doing — and you aren’t doing it just because you can — then it comes from a place of sincerity and generosity,” Timberlake said.
NO PRESUMPTIONS The transition to acting did not come easily, Timberlake said. After ‘N Sync stopped recording in 2001, he released two successful albums, 2002’s “Justified” and 2006’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” After that, Timberlake made a conscious decision to pursue acting, and rather than dive into mainstream films, he took roles in small, challenging films such as “Alpha Dog,” “Southland Tales” and “Black Snake Moan.” After he found his footing and became one of the most popular recurring hosts on “Saturday Night Live,” Timberlake started accepting bigger parts, getting strong reviews for his work in “The Social Network.” Timberlake said that his knowledge of the right time to take the plunge, and when to hold back, comes from his background, growing up in Shelby Forest, Tenn., a small town near Memphis. “I have a thing about coming from a small town in the South where presumption is unacceptable,” he said. “I already had a problem even asking people to accept me as an actor. So I was very conscious of not jumping in and doing something just because I could do it. I have never been a big believer in that, and I think that is pretty obvious, given the fact I have put out just two albums when I could have made six.”

n a strange scene for a Monday, the line for the bar at the Conservatory on Western snakes back into the crowd, making the thirsty beer seekers wary of any potential line jumpers that could keep them from their golden brews. The air conditioning inside is working overtime but cannot keep up with the triple digit temperatures outside and the hundred or so people packed in for the show that night, which features tween girl punk rockers Skating Polly, the screaming rock band Saturday Sirens and hip-hop artist Jabee. The crowd is a mix of striped hipster tanks tops, skater shoes and out-of-place parents. The deejay on stage plays a mix that samples the Yello song “Oh Yeah,” best known from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” which immediately grabs the attention of Josh Sallee. “I gotta go talk to this deejay,” Sallee said. And with that, he hops on stage and confirms with the mixmaster what the game plan for his set would be. Sallee grabs the mic and addresses the crowd. “Hey, I’m Josh Sallee,” he said. “Let’s have some fun.” The crowd responds with head nods in unison as the beat starts and Sallee is off rhyming and rapping so quickly that not much is comprehensible. But that does not stop the crowd’s cheers from getting louder. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 2 2

Sallee walks to the front of the stage as the beat drops to his first single “So Chill” from his recently released album, “Return To Sender.” Sallee points to the smoke stained ceiling and his words start flowing:
Do me a favor — label me a favorite/ Or just become another hater when I make it. Growing up in Bixby, once a farming community but now a thriving suburb on the south end of Tulsa, rapping was something Sallee did to entertain friends and sometimes to embarrass people who doubted he could do it. But it is hard to blame the doubters, since nothing about Sallee screams hip hop. But once he opens his mouth and people hear his wickedly fast tongue rattle off lyrics, doubters are silenced and jaws drop. “That’s probably why I rap,” Sallee said. “It’s tight to break someone’s expectations. It’s the best feeling ever. It gives you that rush.” Now living in Oklahoma City, Sallee has just released his first album, ‘Return to Sender,’ which he recorded with the help of producer Tyler Reid. It took the help and encouragement of friends, family and his growing fan base, but Sallee said he hopes his album can help open the eyes of people nationally to the hip-hop and rapping talent that resides in Oklahoma. This attitude is a far cry from what he experienced while he tried to make it big in Los Angeles. The opportunities, while abundant, never sat right with Sallee, who said the coastal people seemed to always be looking out for No. 1. “You have to earn it on your own out there. I respect that, but it’s cutthroat,” Sallee said. “I’m from Oklahoma, that’s just not how we are. We are all about helping each other.” After Sallee performed at the SXSW Music and Film Conference in Austin this past spring, he said he met fellow white rapper, Asher Roth. “He told me to just stay in Oklahoma and just do it, because eventu-

ally people will come to you and seek you,” Sallee said. “I think it’s possible to do it out of Oklahoma, and maybe major labels would come to me and fund what we are doing here and let it stay here.” Sallee said it’s been difficult to make a name for himself in Oklahoma, because there is a stigma against rap in Oklahoma’s culturally conservative climate. “I personally want to make people feel enjoyment with the words I say and the message I get across instead of just making feel good music with a good beat and a party message,” Sallee said. “The first thing that anybody says in front of me is ‘Hey check him out because he raps and he’s good and he doesn’t rap about that stupid stuff.’” Sallee said he works closely with fellow Oklahoma artists Johnny Polygon and Jabee, and he said that with the right attitude, people will be able to hear that good rap music can come from the Sooner State. “There are people with good chances to change that stigma,” Sallee said. “We make Oklahoma have a positive look about the rap and hip-hop music coming from our state.” Apart from breaking down the doors to Oklahoman’s ear drums, Sallee said he has also had to battle against the white rapper stereotype that was laid down before him by artists like Vanilla Ice, Limp Bizkit and even Roth. Sallee said he is constantly annoyed by people comparing him to artists like Eminem and Mac Miller. It’s not because he doesn’t respect them as artists, but he feels his style is different from theirs. “Whoever is hot as a white rapper is who I’ll get compared to, and that’s so annoying,” Sallee said. “Hip hop is the worst at that because everybody puts you on a list and you are either higher or lower than the next white rapper. No, don’t compare me. Nobody compares Kanye and Jay-Z because they are so different — everyone just lets them do their thing. “I’m different, let me do my thing,” he said. Sallee said once he left high school, he had no desire to keep rapping, but then he heard about a talent contest in which submitted YouTube videos could result in some cash.
I

“I didn’t win, but I got like 40 hits in three days and I was so pumped,” Sallee said. More videos would come, and soon he had more than just friends clicking on his videos. “Things started rolling and then people really started listening to me, and they were asking for more and that was such a thrill,” he said. “Getting to that point from where your friends are the only ones supporting you to having actual fans? That is some craziness.” His first show was opening up for Bizzy Bone of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony at the Pink Eye in Tulsa. He won the spot after he raffled off the most tickets to the show. Since then, Sallee has opened up for a Who’s Who of emerging hip-hop artists, including the Cool Kids, Kendrick Lamar, Big K.R.I.T., Mac Miller and Lil’ Flip. But probably his biggest performance happened on the spot, when he was invited to the home of Oklahoma City forward and NBA Superstar, Kevin Durant. Sallee had spotted Durant’s teammate, James Harden, at an Edmond bowling alley a few months prior. After a few drinks and some encourage-
ment from friends, Sallee mustered up the courage to tell Harden that he would like to rap for him. Harden loved it, tweets were exchanged and a few months later, Sallee found himself in Durant’s studio rapping over one of the beats Durant had made. “ ‘How do you talk that fast?’ ” Sallee said Durant asked him. “He played me more beats and I just kept rapping. It’s the most surreal and most awesome moment in my life.” Sallee said he keeps in touch with the Thunder guys and has rapped for Durant and company about a half dozen times. With the release of his album, Sallee said he hopes to continue doing shows in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Stillwater and anywhere he can introduce new people to his music. He has a mini college tour planned for the fall and is working on an album with fellow Oklahoma musicians. “You just have to put in your time for the later payoff,” Sallee said. “Check your ego and pay your dues and just build it, build it, build it. And then pray somebody notices you’re still going.”

Oklahoma City artist Dustin Oswald is humble about the success he has found with his Bombs Away line of original T-shirts. The shirts, he said, are a means to continue working at his real passion: painting. “That’s what pays the bills,” he said of his Bombs Away line. Oswald spends much of his workday at his small studio, 2921 W Wilshire, hand-pulling T-shirts at his four-color manual press. His designs are handdrawn, and he uses silk screens for producing the shirts. He has so many orders, he said, he hardly has time to do anything else. The thing about Bombs Away shirts that makes them special to Oklahomans is that many have Oklahoma-themed designs. Oswald’s most popular and recognizable design is Osage Shield, from the Oklahoma flag. Also Oklahoma-themed are his Scissortail design and an American Indian image called The Warrior. “I like the fact that Dustin’s line is all hand-drawn and not just tweaked in Photoshop,” said Amanda Bradway, owner of DNA Galleries, a Plaza District boutique that carries Oswald’s shirts and specializes in art, crafts and other items from Oklahoma artists and crafters. “It’s inspiring for the public to see artists in Oklahoma truly make a living and growing right in front of them,” Bradway said. “Dustin is really making a huge impact on our state’s culture.”

A SENSE OF PRIDE Like many artists, Oswald admitted he didn’t always feel like he fit into his local society, especially while growing up in small-town Apache. Oswald was into punk rock music as a teen and said he always felt a bit alienated from the rest of the community. The term “Bombs Away” has long been meaningful to Oswald, he said. “It’s kind of like my carpe diem, live-in-themoment kind of thing.” He felt such a kinship with the term he even had it tattooed on his shoulder during a trip to New Orleans about 12 years ago. That was five years before he would start his T-shirt line. His first shirt was commissioned by Blue Seven, he said.

After finishing college at Oklahoma State University and moving to Oklahoma City, Oswald said he started seeing a wave of Oklahoma pride among his artist friends and acquaintances. That was just what Oswald felt he needed: pride in where he lived. “I wanted to do something that would make me feel more a part of the Oklahoma City community,” Oswald said. “I wanted to be proud of where I came from. I wanted to embrace my roots and see where that could take me.” Though he considers himself an artist who makes T-shirts, Oswald’s shirts really are expressions of his artistic nature. The designs are as cool and interesting as his paintings. In his painting, Oswald uses mixed ed media of acrylic and ballpoint pen to create whimsical yet slightly disturbing paintings that lean toward fantasy, fairy ry tale and absurdity.

The menu at JT’s Tacos is the real deal, no matter what you order
T’s Tacos might be just a little too close to home for me to render an objective opinion. You see, JT’s represents two things that are extremely close to my heart: my hometown of Austin, Texas, and tacos. The tacos are self-evident at JT’s; it’s in the name after all. But Austin is in the concept: a food trailer. Similar trailers are in nooks, crannies and parking lots all across the Texas capital. The food within them is rarely commonplace, and when it is, it’s twisted upward into art. The JT’s Tacos trailer is anchored in a triangular parking lot that splits NE 4 Street and Harrison Avenue, which is just east of the railroad that splits downtown. That’s 21 NE 4 St., if you’re mapping it. JT’s is a culmination of the dreams and schemes of chefs Marc and Jenny Dunham. The name comes from Jenny’s first initial and her maiden last initial, Townley. It’s not a surprise that Austin inspired this concept, as that’s where Marc, a native of New Braunfels, Texas, cut his culinary teeth. “I love the street food in Austin, and I think it’s something this market really needs,” he said.
Marc Dunham worked at several restaurants in Austin and taught at the Texas Culinary Academy there before moving to New York City. From the Big Apple, he accepted a job in Stillwater as executive chef at The Ranchers Club and became food and beverage director for the Atherton Hotel. He left there for a job at Francis Tuttle CareerTech last year. At Francis Tuttle, he’s in charge of creating and developing an ambitious culinary program. His demonstration kitchens are under construction.
GOURMET TACO DREAMS So, as that dream is coming true, the Dunhams decided to breathe life into another long-standing aspiration with their own gourmet taco stand. The tortillas are handmade every morning, usually starting about 4 a.m. for Marc. The fillings are mostly made in a sous vide machine, left in vacuum-sealed hibernation then seared to life after the customer places an order. The menu is a tapestry of pork, beef, chicken and assorted chiles. The veggie
taco is still in the test kitchen, but breakfast is served on a tortilla starting at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday. The Chopper is a great taco to start with for first-time visitors. The combination of picadillo, potato and queso Chihuahua returns me to age 5, hanging out in the kitchen of Feline Garcia, our neighbor in San Diego who hailed from Puerto Rico. The Chopper tastes like it came out of Feline’s kitchen, the first place flavor ever occurred to me. The Hangover is a combination of carne guisada, potato and jalapeno. Carne guisada is a Mexican version of braised beef tips, common in every household from San Antonio to the Guatemalan border and points beyond. My very good friend Jesse Olivarez, a true true Texican from Tejano country, took one bite and immediately proclaimed it the finest he’d had outside of his mother’s kitchen. The Macho Taco contains steak, pineapple-tinged pico de gallo and rajas, which is grilled veggies. The West Side contains barbacoa — Mexican style barbecue —

onion and cilantro. The Cock a Doodle Doo combines chicken tinga, chorizo, cabbage and lime. High on the Hog is a pork-lover’s dream: green chile pork, pork belly and bacon. Little Meat is what they call carnitas, which is fitting since that’s what carnitas means. JT’s version contains pork, garlic, radish, onion and cilantro. The Salty Pig is a party for chorizo, potato, rajas and queso Chihuahua. JT’s also offers build-your-own options, breakfast combinations and many others I haven’t yet had time to try — but will. The sous vide technique is a perfect substitute for braising, which is the common technique used to prepare guiso, tinga and so many other Hispanic dishes. It’s also ideal for rich pork flavors to meld with others. What is sous vide? Put simply, ingredients are placed in plastic pouches, vacuum-sealed and bathed in water carefully brought to a specific temperature, ranging from 120 to 165 degrees. When pitmasters talk about low and slow, they’re usually talking 200 to 225 degrees, so sous vide takes things down a notch and manages to pack even more flavor.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT What is the next step in bringing this Austin-tatious concept home? A community, which has already started to take form. In Austin, food trailer parks have become a destination for those unafraid to spend more than $2 for a hot dog or taco to ensure that it’s not only of high quality but born of an artist’s soul. It’s caught on, and the community is the better for it. In the past few weeks, the Dunhams have drawn trucks and/or trailers serving Wild Al’s Barbeque, POPS Route 66 burgers and shaved ice, so clearly the movement has begun. The main obstacle this trailer triangle faces that those south don’t is the severity of the weather. Austin is plenty hot July to August but boasts a lot more shade. Winters aren’t as frosty, and springs along the Colorado River rarely spit hailstorms or tornadoes. However, talk to Marc Dunham very long, and it’s clear that weather isn’t going to deter him or his wife. They’re in it to be on the ground floor of culture growth and serve some stupid-good tacos while they’re at it.
