e want you to tell us about your first time. No, not that, and by the way, you probably shouldn’t post that Twitpic, either. What LOOKatOKC and our more mature brethren at The Oklahoman want to hear are stories about something you did that you’ve never done before for our new series, “2011 — A Year of Firsts.” Did you strap on a parachute and get pulled into the air by a speedboat during spring break? How about mountain climbing for the first time or bodysurfing the Great Barrier Reef? Walking on hot coals without your Zen master’s guidance? Fighting in your first mixed martial arts battle to the death? Okay, so maybe it doesn’t have to be so adventure sporty in nature. It could be a story about your first day of real, post-collegiate work, or your first tattoo, or your first medical discovery, or your first day on the job as a bouncer. It could be an account of buying your first home or car, or starting your own business, beginning your first day at boot camp or having your first child. You might be recording your first album, making your first movie, opening your first art show, filing your first lawsuit. Please send me your story, and go into some rich detail on it — I want to read about everything. It doesn’t have to be the Jon Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air” of first-day-at-school stories, but a killer narrative is likely to get our attention. Please send your story to glang@opubco.com. Oh, and don’t fall off a cliff on my account. Any hospital expenses incurred while in pursuit of an extraordinary first experience are strictly your own.

What’s your thing? Trying to find an identity and share stories, performances of Oklahoma musicians is a place to start

I

wasn’t sure who I was, but that’s because I’m not a morning person and the sun wasn’t up yet. Sitting quietly on a Starbucks couch in Nichols Hills Plaza, I spent the Tuesday morning of my Spring Break waiting for Oklahoma City-based singer/songwriter Graham Colton to pick me up and deliver me to the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. I filmed a music video with Colton two years ago. We spent roughly six minutes together before a concert in Stillwater. The drive to SXSW required six hours of sitting still with new people, but I wasn’t worried about being a stranger. I’m familiar with Colton’s accomplishments, and we share some similarities. He performed on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” I have two televisions. Colton threw touchdowns to Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker when they were in high school together. There’s a deflated football in my living room. But the most striking resemblance is how Colton is facing something I’m facing too. Somewhere past Fort Worth, Colton brought up a question: What’s your thing? This identity query was sparked by a conversation Colton had with Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. To me, this is a huge question not only at family gatherings but also when figuring out what I’m going to do with my life. I’ve spent four years at Oklahoma State University, but my interests are in the music world. I need to find new ways to spread stories and share performances of Oklahoma musicians. Finding out “the thing” from local artists is my thing, and I love it. That’s because musical identity exists beyond guitar notes and broken drumheads. I’ve seen bands develop as they interact with fans, design ridiculous Tshirts and survive music festivals. After arriving in Austin, my identity became firmly attached to my camera. It was my job to share what was happening at SXSW. I’m still trying to develop an identity and share music in interesting ways. Why aren’t you? << ARTWORK BY NATHAN POPPE

Great food options in OKC THE FOOD BUSINESS IS BOOMING AROUND THESE PARTS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE ART OF THE FOOD CART

B

ased on a recent visit to Austin, TX for some tiny little music festival, I will say there is a surplus of food carts there. I say “surplus” because no one needs half the food you can find on those things. Let me give you a list of the mobile food facilities I tried in a two-day time span: Hey Cupcake!, Wurst Tex for some hot dogs, Flip Happy Crepes and some hamburger slider joint. My body is now in detox mode. The plethora of food carts range from vegetarian meals to Asian food. Sushi, noodles, pizza, and po’ boys all make their marks on the streets of Austin. I love the idea of nightlife food on the go. It’s quick, cheap and super convenient on foot. It might be a little too much of all of those things, but after a few drinks, all food inhibitions go out the window anyway. We might as well be chowing on good food, so here’s a list of a few of the OKC favorites.

>>> Bobo’s Chicken: The Rosetta Stone of all the mobile food eateries in OKC has to be Bobo’s Chicken. It’s in northeast Oklahoma City right around NE 23 and Hood, and serves fried biscuits with honey on top, smoked and fried wings, catfish, shrimp and fries. I heard the line gets pretty intense after 10 p.m., so Bobo’s could be a good after-happy hour excursion. It’s has been around for a long time: my friends in high school always talked about going on the weekends. It’s only open Friday and Saturday nights, so if you see a red food trailer, stop immediately: fried deliciousness awaits. >>> Hot Dog OKC: This hot dog cart is located in Bricktown and features Nathan’s Famous All Beef Hot Dogs, hot links and bratwurst. Chicago dogs, Bricktown Bacon Brat with red onion & spicy brown mustard and even a Skittles hot dog adorn the photo section on Hot Dog OKC’s Facebook. It’s usually located near Sapphire next to the Bricktown Parking Garage. The menu is online, and I will be devouring the Hot Diggity Dandy Dog this weekend: a hot link with Cholula hot sauce, spicy brown mustard, onions & jalapenos. I’ll have to carry a jug of milk with me to relieve the spiciness,

but at least my sinuses should clear up. They even have celebrity dogs featuring local media people including the Cerreta dog (Jaime Cerreta from Fox 25), the Speno Jalapeno Dog (Andrew Speno also from Fox 25) and the Casey Cornett Dog (PR extraordinaire with a mayor for a dad). The Lett Dog is coming soon to a Bricktown OKC hot dog stand near you. Kidding, of course — or am I? They are open from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, so mark your calendars — some of the best late night food ever. >>> Big Truck Tacos: It’s been open for less than two years, but already it’s a staple of the OKC community. I’m guessing that Big Truck Tacos was one of the first food trucks you thought of when you started reading this article. The owners all came from prestigious restaurants around the city, so they know where to buy their ingredients and which flavor combinations go well together. Tacos, burritos, salads, tostadas and the breakfast entrees (my favorite) are all served up daily. They bring some local flavor to it, as well, with names like the Thunder Burrito and the Flaming Lips taco made with smoked tongue. This is definitely not the average Mexican meal. I’ve had the I

Crispy Cado, the 5th Amendment taco (I have no clue what was in it), and one of the breakfast tacos with chorizo in it. Find this truck ASAP. They go all over the city and even Norman. >>> Odelay! Burritos & Tacos: I’ve seen Odelay! outside of The Wedge Pizzeria on North Western and The Drunken Fry. Both times, I wasn’t schnockered enough to vacate my diet for five minutes of pure satisfaction, but rest assured, it will happen. They have so much more than burritos and tacos. When I try this place, tamales will top the list. I feel like that will be a true test of the deliciousness. They also have Elotes en Vasos, which is a fattened up corn on the cob and churros for dessert. I suggest looking for this place near Classen Circle and around the Western Avenue District. The motto is, “It’s time to eat! Let the tacos come to you!” They say if you eat something greasy before you start drinking you won’t have a hangover, so think of these carts and trucks as medicine to fuel the drunken soul. They’re on a street corner near you.

he Tishomingo resident made good on her bold album title, truly inciting a “Revolution” with the fall 2009 release of Miranda Lambert’s third album. Designated the album of the year by both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association, the platinumselling “Revolution” not only reaffirmed the Texas native’s reputation as a sharptongued firebrand with smashes like “White Liar” and “Only Prettier,” but it also bared her vulnerabilities with the singles “Dead Flowers” and especially “The House That Built Me,” the biographical chart-topper that won Lambert her first Grammy for best female country vocal performance. She even has been dubbed recently “the Lady Gaga of Nashville.” Of course, since the meat dress-wearing singing sensation last week released “The Country Road” version of her hit “Born This Way,” maybe Gaga should be considered “the Miranda Lambert of pop.” “I am not sure what that means actually, but I hope it’s a compliment,” Lambert said in an e-mail interview last week. “Lady Gaga is an amazing entertainer and very inspiring, however I am not nearly as brave as she is.” “Revolution” may have propelled Lambert into a new orbit, but she will spin back to her adopted home state when she brings her new “The Revolution Continues” tour to the University of Oklahoma’s Lloyd Noble Center on April 7, just days after vying for a leading seven trophies at

the ACM Awards and experiencing a “Girls’ Night Out” in Vegas with other “Superstar Women of Country.” “We have a new set, very simple but with a great new video wall and we have new content for the songs. I usually work on the set list quite a bit and try to switch it up without forgetting the hits. I hope the Oklahomans will like it! I try to offer my fans a show where they can leave their problems at the door (and enjoy) just escaping for a few hours and having fun,” Lambert said by e-mail while recovering from a respiratory infection that caused her to cancel planned Australian tour dates this month with Alan Jackson. “I am feeling better ... and glad I am well again to be able to perform in Norman. As you know, Oklahoma has become my second home state. Plus, a few of my puppies were found in Oklahoma,” added the well-known animal rights advocate and pet rescuer. Lambert, 27, will need plenty of stamina to navigate her busy spring. Along with touring, she is competing for the first time for the top prize, the fan-voted entertainer of the year title, on Sunday night’s 46th Annual ACM Awards. Lambert’s fiancé and Tishomingo neighbor Blake Shelton and Oklahoma native Reba McEntire will co-host the ACMs, which will air live at 7 p.m. Sunday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on CBS. Along with the other entertainer candidates — Norman resident Toby Keith, Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Taylor

Swift and Keith Urban — Lambert will perform on the Vegas awards extravaganza. In addition, she garnered the most ACM nominees of any solo artist, so she will contend for top female vocalist, single record and song of the year for “The House That Built Me,” video of the year for “The House That Built Me” and “Only Prettier,” and vocal event of the year with Sheryl Crow and Loretta Lynn for their rendition of Lynn’s classic hit “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Lambert was amazed at the number of ACM nominations she received, but she knows she isn’t the only star hoping to glow a little brighter by the end of the ACMs. “I was doing the announcement for the nominations with (former Tulsan) Ronnie Dunn and was very surprised that I was eligible in so many categories. Seems like it just keeps on going. Winning would be great of course, but there are a lot of great projects nominated in my categories, so we will see,” she said. “Awards and praise mean a lot to an artist, it’s a validation that people like what you do. For me being nominated means a lot as well, as these awards are determined by my peers, folks in the music industry. My career is very satisfying, with or without all those nominations but (I) still like getting them! I love performing and I love writing and recording music, I sure hope I get to do for a long time.” On Monday, Lambert, Reba, Lynn, Checotah native Carrie Underwood, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Martina McBride and the Judds will be honored at the taping of a concert special “Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country,” again at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Several high-profile country gentlemen, including Shelton, Dunn and Oklahoma native Vince Gill, will help laud the ladies during the TV special, which will air April 22 on CBS. During the show, Lambert will be recognized for being the only female artist in ACM history to ever win album of the year twice, for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” in 2007 and for “Revolution” in 2009. “I love being part of a show that honors women in country, and what a great group of women. I am excited about this event. It’s about time that someone focuses on the great female artists we have in country music,” she said.

Brandy McDonnell bmcdonnell@ opubco.com

Awards show glory and superstar honors aren’t even the biggest items on the spring agenda for Lambert: On May 14, she and Shelton will marry after a yearlong engagement and six years as a country couple. Despite their hectic

rising-star schedules, Lambert said all is prepared for the event, which is set to feature fun-loving country crooner Neal McCoy. “I’ve hired a wedding planner and she’s helping me out with all the details. I’d never get it done without her,” Lambert said. “Is it May yet?” Once they tie the knot, she and her beau will try to live “a normal life as much as possible” on their Tishomingo homestead, where they enjoy hunting, fishing and other outdoorsy activities. She reportedly has taken up barrel racing as her newest hobby. “Living away from the activity and having made my home in Oklahoma is a plus,” she said. “I have a quiet life here and love spending time with my animals, family and friends. Its difficult sometimes to strike the perfect balance between working and making sure you have enough private time, but so far it seems I have managed.” Still, fame and fortune have their drawbacks: Before performing and going on to win on February’s Grammy Awards, Lambert told the Associated Press that she and Shelton learned from experience that they couldn’t go Christmas shopping anymore without causing a sensation. “I know that being in the public eye is a responsibility and I am thrilled with the success that I have with my music. I would prefer to sometimes just be a normal person, but I also understand that I can’t have it both ways. I love my life and what I get to do for living,” she said. “Living in the boonies is the great equalizer. When I get home and I see my dogs and my farm animals and just hang out, it reminds me of what matters, and that if the fame goes away I will still have people that I love and that love me back in my life.” Naturally, the newly minted Grammy winner isn’t done making music. She is penning new songs for her hotly anticipated fourth album, and she said her team hopes to have it out in time for the Christmas shopping, even if Lambert won’t be able to hit the mall. “I have been writing for the next project but its still in its infancy, so too early to tell what will happen. I guess (I) just take it one day at a time, to keep everything in perspective,” she said.

ACM AWARDS The 46th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 3 on the CBS Television Network. Reba McEntire, who hails from Chockie, and Blake Shelton, an Ada native and Tishomingo resident, will co-host the show. Tishomingo resident Miranda Lambert, Shelton’s fiancée, has seven Academy of Country Music Award nominations, the most of any solo artist. She and Norman resident Toby Keith are nominated along with Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban for the top award, the fan-voted entertainer of the year title. Voting for entertainer of the year continues and closes during the third hour of Sunday’s live broadcast. To vote, go to www.voteACM.com. Shelton, Reba and Checotah native Carrie Underwood also will contend for ACM Awards.

‘MEYRIN FIELDS’ – BROKEN BELLS

F

our-song EPs usually serve as stopgaps between full-length albums, and they usually fall into three categories: collections of subpar material deemed unworthy of inclusion on the previous release, tantalizing tastes of things to come or the culmination of musical experimentation. The four tracks on Broken Bells’ “Meyrin Fields” EP are stranger creatures than anything that appeared on James Mercer and Danger Mouse’s 2010 debut — an indication that the duo is prepared to make music that genuinely deserves to exist outside the shadow of either Danger Mouse’s Gnarls Barkley or Mercer’s other band, The Shins. Broken Bells gets down to business with the title track, a bracing polyrhythmic song in which Mercer alternates between the two extremes of his substantial vocal range as Danger Mouse churns out bursts of clatter and atmosphere. Even better is “Windows,” bolstered by R&B rhythms, hard-funk guitar and Mercer’s dizzying falsetto. “An Easy Life” dips into fuzztone tropicalia — music for vacationing robots — and the set closes with the harder-edged shimmer of “Heartless Empire,” the one track in which Mercer seems to be pining for his erstwhile Shins gig. At this point, Broken Bells and its status as an ongoing concern merits serious consideration. With Cee Lo Green doing just fine with his solo career and the shake-ups in the Shins lineup, Danger Mouse and Mercer might make this their day jobs rather than their moonlighting gig. “Meyrin Fields” indicates that both parties seem interested in expanding Broken Bells’ smooth electro-pop into new sonic territory and keeping our heads ringing. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘A TALE OF TWO JOURNEYS’ – CUT COPY

N

o need to play “spot the influences” with Cut Copy: By releasing the free mixtape “A Tale of Two Journeys,” the Australian retro-futurists offer an unusually forthcoming look at the music that informed the group’s entrancing new album, “Zonoscope.” “Journeys” almost acts as a bibliography page for “Zonoscope,” stringing together songs from four decades into an hourlong soundscape that, not surprisingly, conjures many of the same moods and textures found on “Zonoscope” and provides fresh context for a few undeniable classics. “A Tale of Two Journeys” is an essential “making of” documentary, available for streaming or download online at www.modularpeople.com. One early hint about the direction of “Zonoscope” came when Cut Copy’s Dan Whitford told an interviewer that the band was listening to a lot of “Tusk” during the recording sessions — a key influence that shows up on songs such as “Where I’m Going” and “Hanging Onto Every Heartbeat.” Sure enough, the title track to Fleetwood Mac’s flash-fried masterpiece pops up early in the mixtape, “real savage-like,” sequenced after Shuggie Otis’ “Strawberry Letter 23.” Whitford and his bandmates craft these tracks into a seamless mix, so that King Sunny Ade’s “Synchro System” leads into Ace Frehley’s discoglam stomper “New York Groove” as if they always belonged together. The “Two Journeys” of the title seem to be Whitford’s lifelong education in important sounds and his rediscovery of half-forgotten vinyl gems during the run-up to “Zonoscope.” In his mind, the Bee Gees’ spacey oddity “Sweet Song of Summer” occupies the same emotional space as Spiritualized’s “All of My Tears,” and Konk’s 1984 new wave/hip-hop confab “Your Life” shares a common spirit with the Rolling Stones’ “Undercover of the Night.” Not surprisingly, “A Tale of Two Journeys” is the perfect companion for “Zonoscope,” unfurling archival beats and melodies from Cut Copy’s sense memory to create the idealized sound of summer. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor <<<

A crash and burn for ‘Paul’

S

imon Pegg and Nick Frost star as British geeks visiting America in the sci-fi comedy “Paul.” Starting at Comic-Con International in San Diego, the pair plan a crosscountry trip in an RV, hitting the highlights of alien encounter sites such as Area 51 and Roswell, N.M. Graeme (Pegg) is an aspiring artist working with Clive (Frost), who’s fallen off the map after his first book. The pair’s revelry at Comic-Con marks the high point of the film, as they celebrate the subculture. Once they are on their way across the U.S., though, the film slows down. Along the way these two sci-fi fans run

across the real thing: Paul, a bigheaded grayish green alien. Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) crash-landed on earth 60 years ago, but now he’s on the run from the government, which has decided to dissect him. The film becomes a semi-interminable chase scene, as government agents (including Jason Bateman and Tulsa’s Bill Hader) attempt to catch up to the RV. Along the way, Graeme, Clive and Paul meet Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig), a sheltered fundamentalist whose father is stifling her dreams of seeing the world. When she sees Paul, the boys are forced to bring her along, adding her father to the growing group of those chasing the crew.

LOOKATOKC.COM

The CGI work on Paul is pretty sophisticated, but Rogen never really manages to make him a fully developed character. And Pegg and Frost, as talented as they are, feel as if they are coasting on their relationships from past films. Graeme and Clive’s story never gets fully explored, as director Greg Mottola keeps the pedal to the floor, perhaps hoping that keeping the characters moving will keep viewers from seeing the cracks. Everybody involved with the film has done better, and most likely will again. There are spots of humor, but the film’s characters seem more suited to a short comedy sketch than a feature film. —Matthew Price, Features Editor

‘Limitless’ delivers chemically enhanced thriller

L

imitless” is the near-future thrill ride version of “Flowers for Algernon,” adjusted for modern ambition and set loose to tell the story of Eddie Morra, an underachiever who stumbles into chemically enabled world domination. Few recent thrillers deliver as much fun as “Limitless,” mainly because it moves fast, takes its plot turns even faster and features Bradley Cooper in a completely engaged, sharply focused performance. When “Limitless” first introduces Eddie, he looks as if he is constantly rolling out of bed in the same clothes, wandering around Manhattan with a tangle of matted hair and his failure as a novelist hanging over his head. He lives in a hellhole of an apartment, and his beautiful, successful girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) just gave up on him, so things are not going as planned. At the moment when Eddie hits rock bottom, he has an unlikely savior. Ex-brother-in-law and inveterate drug dealer Vernon (Johnny Whitworth) runs into Eddie, smells his desperation and offers him a taste of NZT, a drug that’s allegedly just shy of FDA approval.

According to Vernon, Eddie will gain access to the 90 percent of his brain where the lights never go on. NZT gives Eddie wings: Within 30 seconds of ingesting the clear tablet, he can draw correct conclusions based on seemingly random facts, remember and act on information he gained years before and acquire knowledge at superhuman rates. He can write his novel in a flash, but that’s child’s play for Eddie. His intellect moves with such efficiency that Eddie soon proves invaluable to titans in the world markets, including mogul Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro), who harnesses the young genius’ intellect to predict a rival’s next move. But like the Daniel Keyes novel “Flowers for Algernon,” in which a mentally handicapped man undergoes experimental surgery to increase his intelligence, there is a genuine danger of intellectual backsliding: Eddie’s results might be “Limitless,” but only as long as he keeps taking NZT. Too much of the drug has its own dangers, but going cold turkey appears to be killing off the small community of formerly savvy NZT abusers. Naturally, Eddie’s supply is running out, and some apparent bad behavior during an NZT spree is coming back to haunt

him. Burger, who directed 2006’s “The Illusionist,” keeps the energy ratcheted near top speed in “Limitless,” and his only real execution flaw is overindulgence in visual pyrotechnics during the first half of the film to illustrate Eddie’s brain on drugs. “Limitless” is also the rare modern film in which narration does not seem like a hasty patch to cover bad storytelling. Cooper’s Eddie needs to tell this story, because it helps to know how his mind is working. Cooper, who received his biggest career boost from the success of “The Hangover,” is convincing in all stages of Eddie’s development — he successfully engenders both sympathy and envy — and Anna Friel of “Pushing Daisies,” in a small but memorable role, is almost unrecognizable as his doomed ex-wife, Melissa. “Limitless” wraps up a little too tidily, but it is hard to hold that against it when the film moves with such seemingly effortless intelligence and an uncommon sense of good, tense storytelling.

Fearing the loss of herself, she begins to plan her escape with other inmates: Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung). Carla Gugino plays Dr. Vera Gorski, who sympathizes with her charges but isn’t able to stop their systemic abuse. Babydoll retreats into her mind to deal with her situation, which provides the movie’s visual panache. riors on a quest to gain the items needed for their escape. It’s this third level where the most action-packed scenes take place. Snyder has created worlds filled with allegorical vistas as Babydoll struggles for freedom. Fantastic in scope and brilliant in design, “Sucker Punch” showcases Snyder’s cutting-edge visual style. With instruction from the Wise Man (Scott Glenn), the women turn into action heroes, battling orcs, zombies, dragons, robots and more. irector Zack Snyder is hoping viewers will be caught unaware by his new movie, “Sucker Punch.” That’s partly why the movie is named for a strike made without warning. “If you have a preconceived idea about what you think the movie is, or what the idea is, or how movies are put together, that’s what the ‘Sucker Punch’ is all about,” Snyder said. Snyder came into directing with a sucker punch himself, a fast-paced, well-reviewed remake of George Romero’s horror classic, “Dawn of the Dead.” He’s since adapted two graphic novels: “300,” based on the Frank Miller Dark Horse Comic about the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.; and “Watchmen,” based on the miniseries by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons that had long been considered unfilmable. In 2010, he made an animated film called “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” based on the children’s book. With “Sucker Punch,” Snyder and Steve Shibuya wrote the screenplay about a young woman in an insane asylum, who escapes in her mind to other worlds while trying to bring about her escape from the asylum. He says that gave him a lot of ownership in the property but not necessarily more pressure.

‘WATCHMEN’

“I want people to love the movie, and I think it’s a fun ride.”

‘300’

Zack Snyder director of ‘300,’ ‘Watchmen’ and ‘Sucker Punch’ “I want people to love the movie, and I think it’s a fun ride, but I feel the same pressure as I’d feel with anything,” Snyder said while promoting the film. “Through the process of making the movie, just like I did ‘Watchmen’ or ‘300’ or any of the movies I’ve made, once I say this is the movie I’m making, it really becomes personal anyway.” Snyder said seeing sets created that sprang from his mind and never existed before was a novel experience, but creating the film didn’t have the same kind of scrutiny from fandom as “Watchmen.” “That’s probably more pop-culture pressure than this movie could ever get, in the sense that it already had a pedigree of unmakeability to it,” Snyder said. “That’s like, ‘Oh, I decided to make this thing that no one can do.’ That’s a great idea. Or is it? That part ... it’s different when you’re like, ‘Oh, you wrote a movie,’ so of course it can be made.”

FORMING THE VISION The idea for “Sucker Punch” came from a screenplay Snyder had written in the 1990s. In part of the script, a girl, while dancing, has visions of wild adventures. That part of the screenplay was resurrected for “Sucker

Punch.” “We really started to talk about an idea that we could use that mechanism to launch into these fantasy sequences,” he said. “Sucker Punch” stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung as female inmates of a mental asylum in roughly the 1960s. Babydoll (Browning) is sent to the asylum by her abusive stepfather, who contracts an orderly (Oscar Isaac) to fake the paperwork for a lobotomy. Knowing she has only a week left as herself, Babydoll rallies four other inmates in an attempt to escape. “To me, what’s worse than dying is losing yourself, or having the thing that is you, the essence of yourself, taken away, but you remain,” Snyder said. Snyder speculated his fear of having something done to the brain goes back to a 1968 sci-fi classic. “In the original ‘Planet of the Apes’ movie, Chuck Heston finds his buddy, and he’s got that shaved part of his head, and they’re like, ‘They took his brain!’ “ Snyder said. “And that got me, when I saw it originally. It always kind of resonated with me that that was really horrible.” Babydoll retreats into her mind to deal with her situa-

tion as the movie exists in three layers: the layer of the asylum; a second layer, which Babydoll perceives as a brothel; and a third level, where Babydoll and her allies become near-superhuman warriors.

‘SUPERMAN’ IN WORKS Snyder will take on the most famous superhuman in his next film. Snyder, 45, has been named the director for the upcoming “Superman” movie reboot, to star British actor Henry Cavill. He said he wasn’t worried about casting an English actor as Superman. “No, not at all, because Batman’s English, too,” he said, referring to Christian Bale. Things are moving quickly on “Superman,” which is set to be released December 2012. Kevin Costner recently was announced as an addition to the cast as Jonathan Kent, Superman’s father on Earth, joining Diane Lane, already cast as Martha Kent, Superman’s mother on Earth, in the film. “We start at the end of the summer. So a couple of months,” Snyder said. “But it feels like tomorrow.” > Travel and accommodations provided by Warner Bros. Pictures.

‘M AR VEL VS . CA P COM 3: FATE OF TW O W ORL D S ’

MARVEL VS CAPCOM 3

I

DEVELOPER: Campcom PRICE: $59.99 PLATFORMS: XBox 3, PS3 tation 3,

n this corner: Marvel Comics. SpiderMan, Wolverine, Iron Man, Hulk, all with their own comic books, movies, action figures and lunchboxes. Across the ring: Capcom. Ryu, Chun-Li, Dante, Chris Redfield. You’re forgiven for asking: Who? But while Capcom’s characters don’t have the Hollywood star power of Marvel’s superher heroes, they have anchored long-running vid video game franchises like “Devil May Cry” and “Resident Evil.” And Ryu and Chun-Li, the headliners of the “Street Fighter” series, pr proved long ago they can hold their own ag against the likes of Magneto and Doctor Do Doom. “Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two W Worlds” (Capcom, for Xbox 360, PlayS Station 3, $59.99) brings all these icons to together for the first time since 2000. Their g goal: to pound the living daylights out of eeach other. If you need to ask why, you’re p probably not a fan of this genre; like most fighting games, “MvC3” provides the barest thread of a plot to hang all its mayhem on. Instead, it delivers plenty of the flashy, frenetic fisticuffs that “Street Fighter” ffans have come to expect. Each brawl is

a three-on-three tag team affair, and you can mix characters from both universes. You can start with some swordplay from Dante, have Thor deliver the thunder, and finish off your foes with some brute force from the Hulk. With more than 30 characters to recruit, you could spend months experimenting with teams. You could spend even more time mastering each brawler’s individual moves. Fighting fanatics will enjoy discovering all the attacks unleashed by each combination of different button presses. Newcomers aren’t so lucky; the slender training mode in “MvC3” is more confusing than helpful. Fortunately, the game includes a

“simple” control scheme that lets you execute complex attacks with a single button. It levels the field between experts and rookies, and makes the game more accessible for party play. The more the merrier, because the singleplayer action is a drag. Each character gets a story line that’s little more than a series of battles; run the gantlet and you’re rewarded with a half-hearted collection of still frames. The developers could have at least explained why Marvel and Capcom are so mad at each other. Still, admirers of either company — as well as fighting games in general — will find much to like. On the Marvel side, the big shots like Spidey are complemented by some lesser known characters, like killing machine M.O.D.O.K. and Wolverine clone X-23. Capcom’s roster has a few surprises, too, like Amaterasu, the wolf goddess from “Okami,” and Arthur, the hapless knight from “Ghosts ‘n Goblins.” It’s a solid piece of fan service, delivered in vibrant, two-dimensional graphics that look like they’re ripped out of a comic book. I wish it was more ambitious and offered more variety, but gamers who have been waiting 11 years for this sequel will be satisfied. - By The Associated Press

hat better time to have your faith restored than during the Lenten season. Though an epiphany about fried catfish and buffets might not pay the toll to enter the pearly gates, it’ll do, and praise be to Cajun King, 5816 NW 63, for showing the light back to a couple of forgotten delights. Yes, I did my time at a handful of local Chinese buffets through the 1990s, but after a few visits to Grand House, Fung’s Kitchen, Golden Phoenix and Pho Lien Hoa, my Chinese buffet daze came to an end. In the Texas Hill Country, where I grew up, all-you-can-eat catfish parlors, barns and cabins are outnumbered only by Tex-Mex cantinas and barbecue pits. The standard catfish emporium is centered on fillets densely breaded in cornmeal served by the barrel. Oklahoma has no shortage of these kinds of establishments. My tolerance for this heavy-handed approach to catfish

ended before my mullet reached shoulderlength. That’s not to say I quit on it completely, but catfish got the same kind of treatment as turtlenecks, Steve Miller CDs and “Cheers” reruns. That is, until I tried the Catfish Amandine at Cajun King. “I want the catfish to be light,” said chef Ken Mills, a New Orleans native. “I want it to melt in your mouth like butter.” Melt it does, but not before a pass through the sweet-and-spicy Creole mustard called tiger sauce, if you’re smart. Neither the catfish nor the beignets are served on the buffet but rather to your table. While you’re waiting, you’ll find a buffet that includes Cajun staples such as dirty rice and blackened pork chops along with Southern favorites such as collard greens and potatoes. You’ll also find some of the best fried chicken in town along with Cajun pasta and bread pudding. The collard greens are true soul food, flavored with all the goodness the Lord gave from Brother Pig. The potatoes derive salt from the same source. Pork is a common theme along the buffet, which makes sense for this concept. Low simmering only enhances the flavor of the jambalaya, gumbo, crawfish etouffee and saucy white and red beans. Meanwhile, the fried chicken and blackened pork chops disappear so quickly, they’re constantly being refreshed. What I haven’t mentioned is the value. At $8.99 for lunch and $9.99 for dinner, the value is among the city’s best. So popular has Cajun King been that Mills and his partner, Simeon Adda, recently reached a lease agreement for a second location, in Norman. The new Cajun King will be in the building on Ed Noble Parkway where many restaurants failed before it, including Bellini’s and Pearl’s. “The landlord told me it’d been five different restaurants,” Mills said. “I told them that didn’t scare me, because if that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have this opportunity.” Mills hopes to have the location open by summer. The current location is in a strip mall where Godfather’s Pizza once thrived. The atmosphere is minimalist to be kind, but that’s not the focus. When Mills asked our photographer David McDaniel about some of the best barbecue joints he’s visited around the state, McDaniel asked if Mills preferred atmosphere or flavor. Mills responded, “Atmosphere? Who cares about atmosphere. It’s all about flavor.”

RIGHT ON TRE ND FOR SPRING By Heather Warlick Moore | Mood Publication Editor

If the bright yellow daffodils bursting forth in gardens across the state aren’t enough to convince you that spring has officially arrived in Oklahoma, maybe all the rompers and minidresses you’ll start seeing will be. Next issue we’ll take a look at the longer side of spring fashion, but this week, we’re all about the short stuff. Among this spring’s plethora of trends, rompers, short skirts and minidresses are among the strongest. That’s good news because they’re comfortable, wearable and easy to dress down for day or up for evening. Floral, Aztec, geometric and exotic prints are strong for all styles this season but especially for rompers, skirts and dresses. If the bright yellow daffodils bursting forth in gardens across the state aren’t enough to convince you that spring has officially arrived in Oklahoma, maybe all the rompers and minidresses you’ll start seeing will be. “It took a couple of years for rompers to really y catch on here and for people to feel comfortable wearing them,” said Carrie Boevers, owner of Lush, a Fashion Lounge, at 14101 N May. ay. Pair a high-waist romper or dress with a belt and a pair of western rn boots for day and transition it into evening by losing the belt, trading rading the boots for wedge sandals and adding a splash of jewelry. Boevers said dobby prints are big — tiny repetitive figures such ass flowers, geometric shapes or animals (she said she is seeing little elephants and horses everywhere). And leopard print is still hot, lingering ngering from the last several years of animal-print motifs. Leopard prints aren’t the only exotics to bee on the lookout for. Tribal and Aztec-inspired embroidery or prints are everywhere, i ints h although the look could become dated-looking g very quickly.

But there is a softer side to spring fashion. Romantic styles with soft, girlie colors are also everywhere. That trend is evident when you walk into Impulse, a boutique at 209 E Main in Norman. “What I’m seeing are some really pretty feminine colors,” said Deanna Thompson, the boutique’s owner and buyer. “Pink, yellow and turquoise are really big. I’m seeing lots of lace and floral, ribbons and headbands.” Shirtdresses and trench dresses also are popular for spring. A flowing print scarf will soften the harsh silhouette of this menswear look. The fashions featured on these pages are available at various local boutiques including Lush, Impulse, Funky Monkey (10401 N May, in the same center as Lush), Pink Sugar Shoe Boutique and Dillard’s Penn Square, 1389 E 15, Suite 120, in Edmond.
