s film lovers gear up for the June 8 kickoff of the 11th annual deadCenter Film Festival (see page 12) , the mainstream movie industry is in upheaval over how people experience films. The movie studios are currently in a battle with the National Association of Theatre Owners over how quickly the studios can run a movie through premium videoon-demand services. It is a fight that could dramatically change not just how and when people first experience movies, but where entertainment dollars ultimately land in Hollywood. DirecTV currently has a pilot program called Home Premiere, in which a few recent Sony releases such as “Just Go With It” are available for home viewing 60 days after their initial theatrical release for $29.95. Compared to the usual theater-to-home video window, which is four months, this gives viewers with high-end home theater setups who do not appreciate the communal experience of theatrical viewing the opportunity to go it alone — just them, their surround speakers and Adam Sandler. In April, more than 20 major film directors such as James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis, Peter Jackson and Kathryn Bigelow signed a protest letter against the rapid-release video-on-demand services. They see it as compromising the movie experience, and these directors, most of whom are geared toward high-end visuals and immersive cinematic experiences, argue that 52-inch home video screens do not deliver their films as they designed them. Everything is changing in television, and while the networks worry about how to make money in the time-shifted world of

digital video recorders and TiVo, instant-viewing services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus could shift the paradigm once again. Now, the film industry is looking at a similar sea change. But events such as the deadCenter Film Festival make me believe that the communal experience of theatrical viewing will not die as long as bright, emerging moviemakers create films that elicit thought and encourage discussion. At last year’s festival, hundreds of people showed up in downtown Oklahoma City to sit in the middle of the street, watch “The Birth of Big Air” and speak to the film’s subject and producer, Mat Hoffman and Spike Jonze. I remember one young woman who was nearly speechless and reduced to tears by the prospect of talking with Jonze, one of the most forward-thinking American directors working in film today. It was inspiring and even a little thrilling to see people so moved by the experience of watching great films together. I am, by my taste and possibly my nature, a slave to technology and a rabid pursuer of the “new new thing,” but I hope we never lose sight of this particular feeling. I still remember the discussions I had with people after seeing films in theaters over 10 years ago — these were people who I ran into by chance and we were moved to lengthy and loud exhalations of thought by films that spoke to us. This is the shared experience of seeing the innovative, insightful, funny and meditative films at deadCenter. It cannot be had for a $30 download and a few lonely posts on Twitter or Facebook. This is something that technology can never replicate.

If I can make it, you can too The DeadCenter film festival is building a great film community in downtown OKC

I

t took more than five hours for me to transfer a completely edited film from my laptop onto a DVD. Patience is one of the things I learned while entering the 2011 deadCenter Film Festival, which begins on June 8. On June 10 my directorial debut will play at 6 p.m. inside IAO Gallery. My folk rock documentary film is named “Black Canyon’s Crossroads for the Restless.” You would be doing a great service for local music and movies if you show up at the premiere screening, but I would be happiest if you took it upon yourself to get excited about deadCenter in general. My first interaction with deadCenter was covering it last year as an OPUBCO intern. Attending the festival is what helped me realize I could and should enter a film. In fall 2010, I determined if I was ever going to make a substantial movie then it had to be before I graduated from OSU and got sucked into the real world. Armed with two cameras, two field recorders and four of my best friends, I traveled to Enid and met a folk quartet named Black Canyon. I was intrigued with the band’s recordings, a seven song EP detailing a Civil War love story. The mission was to film seven songs in seven locations in a single day. As the sun set on a chilly January evening, we finished filming. After a month of editing and making sure I could afford postage to make the Feb. 14 deadline, I made it to the post office one hour before it closed and barely mailed the movie on time. LOOKatOKC doesn’t have enough pages in this issue for me to divulge everything I learned while crafting this film, so I’ll keep the moral of the story simple. Making movies is difficult, but finding a topic in Oklahoma is a breeze. There are so many untold stories waiting for a camera. If you have an idea and a tripod then make a movie. DeadCenter is not only building a film community in downtown OKC but also it’s building a venue for stories that might not make it onto your DVR or the local megaplex. So go ahead, start getting ready for next year because deadCenter is only going to get bigger.

This summer, it’s about the three C’s CLASSY, CUTE AND COMFY ARE THREE THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN THINKING ABOUT FASHION

P

opped collars, hooker boots, mom jeans – we’ve all committed some sort of fashion crime when it comes to nightlife. Mine has to be wearing jeans with a dress. Why was that in fashion? Or was it? We all have nothing to be ashamed of when creating these fashion faux pas. It was the trend — hard to object at the time. One year from now we’ll be wondering why we were wearing ankle boots and big scarves, and why men were wearing women’s jeans. Now, when going out this summer, instead of wearing the skimpiest dress you can find, how about looking a little deeper into the style closet and picking out something that’s going to have all eyes on you, but for good reasons. One of my favorite trends right now is the romper. They can be hard to pull off, but the good thing about them is that there are a plethora of different styles to choose from that will fit your body frame. They are great because some of them can be professional enough to wear to work, but also laid back enough to wear for a night out. Call this one the perfect happy-hour outfit for right after work. The ones I have are extremely comfortable too. I own a halter romper and a button-up romper, and both are shorts for a warm night on a patio. The downbutt side to the romper is getting the thing on and off for bathroom breaks, since it’s just one piece. You basically have to strip down and hope no one is looking in the ccrack of the stall — pardon my pun. Then there is crochet, where the 1970s meet the millennium. This is a fabric The happy is back: the good thing about it is that it’s heavy enough to wear in I’m h the ffall, but ventilated enough to wear in the summer, and it has a romantic look to it since it tends to be in white or more subtle colors. Victoria’s Secret has an entire enti area on their website dedicated to crochet. It’s big in shoes too. You can find a ton of crochet wedges online. Men M can get away with bigger prints this summer: lots of stripes, plaid, and red. re Red apparently is hot on both men and women this summer. While the men’s tops are bold, the jeans are muted. Grey jeans are the fashion. Whatever you do guys, please iron your clothes. Wrinkles aren’t becoming on anyone. You can get by without heels for the summer with gladiator sandals, but heels give the body a nice lift. They create a nice lift in the buttocks, elongate and slim the legs and are just plain sexy. Plus, if you’re going to be dancing, d you’ll want something closed-toe. Dancing doesn’t seem to be a lot l of guys’ forte, so the tootsies might get stepped on a bit. Also, platform wedges are in for the season, ladies. This is the best of both worlds because it lifts your entire foot so you don’t feel like you’re diving head first into the concrete ahead of you. Strappy shoes — lots of straps — are the trend for women. Guys, put up those cleavage shirts and fedoras and step into something m vibrant this summer. Girls, neutral colors like cream or white are the more st style. If you don’t think you can pull that off, then extremely vibrant is the wa to go. It’s not about seeing how short you can make your dress without way see your goods or how tight you can get your jeans this summer. It’s about seeing the three C’s: classy, cute and comfy.

Step-by-step growth was the name of the game for the first nine years of the deadCenter Film Festival, but then on June 9, 2010, the first day of last year’s event, deadCenter suddenly was ready for its close-up.

T

hat was the day that Spike Jonze, director of “Being John Malkovich,” “Adaptation” and “Where the Wild Things Are,” stood on a stage in the middle of Broadway Avenue with Edmond BMX legend Mat Hoffman and discussed their new documentary, “The Birth of Big Air.” This was not the first time deadCenter delivered a killer opening night, but by relocating the outdoor kickoff party to Broadway and having an A-list director-producer in the spotlight, deadCenter moved to another echelon in the national film festival scene. Executive director Lance McDaniel said the successes of 2010 helped set the stage for even more growth as he gears up for the June 8th kickoff of the 11th annual deadCenter Film Festival. “It is a game-changer, because what it says to the rest of the world is, ‘Here is a festival that is able to attract significant, high level talent,’” McDaniel said of the festival, which continues through June 12 in multiple venues throughout downtown Oklahoma City. “Any time you’re able to R EST O F TH E STO RY O N PAG E 13

do that, it brings you up a notch. It allows all these other people who are looking at your festival compared to the other 3,000 available in America to say, ‘Here’s something different. These people have something going on because they’re able to attract an interesting group of people.’” McDaniel, who took over the executive director position from Cacky Poarch in August, said there was a tangible and immediate impact from last year’s success. In December, MovieMaker magazine listed deadCenter Film Festival as one of the “20 Coolest Film Festivals” in the country. “Because of that, we got a lot more attention,” McDaniel said. “Now, we’re not some random festival in the Midwest. We’ve been identified as cool by an industry leader and I think that actually led to us getting more submissions.” But as McDaniel points out, the seeds for deadCenter’s current success were planted by Poarch, chief operating officer/festival director Kim Haywood and former program director Melissa Scaramucci, who created an outreach program for promising filmmakers in Oklahoma’s public schools and developed lasting relationships with filmmakers

such as Bradley Beesley and regular participants such as the Flaming Lips. Respected critic Elvis Mitchell, host of KCRW’s “The Treatment,” participated as a panelist last year, serving as further evidence of deadCenter’s growing reputation. This year, the deadCenter Film Festival begins at 6:30 p.m. June 8 with the redCenter gala at Red Primesteak, 504 N Broadway, followed by the outdoor premiere of “Talihina Sky,” a documentary about Kings of Leon, the Oklahoma-connected band comprised of brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared Followill and their cousin, Matthew Followill. Like last year’s premiere of “The Birth of Big Air,” “Talihina Sky” will be projected on a massive screen in the middle of Broadway. McDaniel, a longtime Kings of Leon fan, said that “Talihina Sky” offers some rare insight into a group that came from extremely humble beginnings and, over the course of a few years, transformed into one of the biggest rock bands in music industry. “It is awesome,” McDaniel said of director Stephen Mitchell’s documentary. “What is amazing about it is, these were guys who grew up in and around Oklahoma with a Pentecostal preacher

father doing traveling, week-long revivals. So they grew up super-poor, super-religious and now they’re the biggest rock stars in the world. They’re a very, very family focused group of guys, and so it’s so interesting to see the behind-the-scenes — what does it mean when you go from young, religious kid to rock star, what your family things of it, how it affects their families when they’re back in their own communities.” McDaniel said that “Talihina Sky” and other films such as the acclaimed documentary “Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times,” are just the most prominent titles in this year’s impressive slate of documentaries and narrative films. He also sees deadCenter as continuing to amass national and international interest and support in the coming years. “I think we’ll continue to get more people,” McDaniel said. “I think our films will get better, our crowds will get bigger and we’ll draw a lot more attention to Oklahoma City — not as a one-off like, ‘Hey, Spike Jonze showed up once,’ but as a yearly event that gets national press and focuses on Oklahoma City as a hub of creativity.”

T

alihina Sky is the story of Kings of Leon, whose strict Pentecostal upbringing in Oklahoma and Tennessee preceded their unlikely transformation into one of the biggest rock bands in the world. The film follows Nathan, Caleb, Jared and Matthew Followill back to Talihina, Oklahoma for their annual family reunion. This reunion serves as a catalyst to explore the band’s roots and the difficulties they faced growing up. Home movies, childhood photos and revealing interviews with family members -- including a colorful group of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins -- expose how the influence of their family has informed the creativity that drives Kings of Leon today. Now a multi-platinum act, Kings of Leon continues to feel the influence of their past while confronting the evolving set of struggles that come with massive success. The band’s achievements have rippled back home to affect their family, who take great pride in, and some of the credit for, the cousins who made it big. The story of Kings of Leon has been called the “best band creation story in recent memory” and, for the first time, is being shared by the people who lived it. >>> THIS IS A FREE OUTDOOR SCREENING

Meanwhile, rigorous journalism is thriving—”Page One” gives us an up-close look at the vibrant cross-cubicle debates and collaborations, tenacious jockeying for on-record quotes, and skillful page-one pitching that brings the most venerable newspaper in America to fruition each and every day.

‘BRIDESMAIDS’

‘Bridesmaids’ not your everyday wedding movie

L

ike Diane Warren, the prolific love song churner who frequently admits in interviews that she has never been in love, most wedding movies seem as if they were scripted by people who have only seen other wedding movies. Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” serves as the caustically funny and insightful antidote to “Something Borrowed” or 2009’s depressing “Bride Wars,” and it is a raucously effective star-making vehicle for its lead actress and co-writer, Kristen Wiig. But look beyond Wiig’s hilarious and empathetic performance as unlucky maid of honor Annie, and “Bridesmaids” is also a smartly executed showcase for some of the best unsung female comedians working in film. Maya Rudolph, Wendi McLendon-Covey (“Reno 911”), Ellie Kemper (“The Office”) and the recently discovered comedic talents of Rose Byrne (“Get Him to the Greek”) all get a good workout, and a revelatory Melissa McCarthy (“Gilmore Girls,” “Mike & Molly”) steals scenes constantly, possibly even a few where she’s not in camera range. At the point when she learns that her lifelong best friend Lillian (Rudolph) is getting married, Annie’s life is not going well. She lost the Milwaukee cake shop that she opened during a recession, and Annie’s living with an endlessly creepy British brother and sister (Matt Lucas and Rebel Wilson). She drives a late-1980s compact

car and sleeps with a happily clueless rich sleaze (Jon Hamm). Annie wants to do right for Lillian as her maid of honor, but joy and enthusiasm are in short supply at the moment. Then she meets the rest of the wedding party. In “Bridesmaids” as in most real weddings, these are mostly women who have never met before, but each has a distinct connection to the bride. Rita (McLendonCovey) is thoroughly disgusted with the filthy details of raising teenage boys and is ready for debauchery, while the recently married Becca (Kemper) is just coming off the high from her sweet and innocent Disney honeymoon. Then there is Megan (McCarthy), Lillian’s future sister-in-law. She is a take-no-prisoners, hypersexual government worker who speaks without a filter. Megan learned a long time ago that holding back was not going to work for someone like her. The biggest problem player in this party, at least for Annie, is Helen (Byrne), a rich society woman who, in recent months, made inroads as one of Lillian’s go-to friends. Helen has the wherewithal to make wedding dreams come true and the passive-aggressive nature to undermine Annie, who cannot make her own dreams come true. Wiig’s script with Annie Mumulo hits all the brazen humor touchstones expected from a Judd Apatow production — nothing gets held back, especially during a relentlessly gross incident involving bridal dresses and

food poisoning. But like “Knocked Up” and especially Feig’s work with Apatow on “Freaks and Geeks,” the scabrously funny elements are balanced with relatable emotional truth. Annie’s run-in with highway patrolman Rhodes (Irish actor Chris O’Dowd of “The IT Crowd”) leads to a potentially sweet romance, but she’s so damaged by her circumstances that Annie cannot fathom that the gently funny Rhodes might be a genuinely good guy. On “Saturday Night Live,” Wiig can be overly broad in her regular sketches, but in “Bridesmaids” she is utterly believable: Annie is both extremely funny and depressed, traits that often intertwine. And this is a cast with real chemistry achieved through improvisational and sketch comedy, but again, the real surprise is McCarthy, who speaks about an octave lower as Megan than she did as Sookie on “Gilmore Girls.” Megan wears no makeup and is freakishly aggressive with men, women and dogs — she is a refreshing character played with real inspiration. “Bridesmaids” is not the female version of “The Hangover” — it has more going on than that. It takes wedding movies out of their frilly, artificially pink-and-white environment and brings in real characters instead of whiny archetypes. The wedding-movie industrial complex could learn a lot from this sweet, sour, disgusting and beautiful comedy. —George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES’

Latest ‘Pirates’ film is full of fool’s gold

J

ohnny Depp’s swashbuckling performance as Capt. Jack Sparrow might be all the treasure most people need. But fans of Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” series beware: Despite some early high-flying adventure and a few strong effects-driven scenes, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” washes up on rough shoals when it comes to overstuffed storytelling and barely utilized 3-D. “On Stranger Tides” begins promisingly with Jack pulling a major stunt in a packed, bloodthirsty English courtroom to ensure freedom for himself and his old ally Gibbs (Kevin McNally). But then Jack learns why the slovenly King George II (a terrific Richard Griffiths) is so keen on his capture. He wants Jack’s map to the Fountain of Youth, and he wants his preferred pirate Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to find it. There is a ton of competition in this quest. The Spanish are in hot pursuit to finish what Ponce de Leon started, but the greatest challenger is Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard (Ian McShane). Jack no longer has a ship, but his contentious old flame Angelica (Penelope Cruz) kidnaps him and pulls him on board Blackbeard’s scurvy, zombie-strewn old vessel. Blackbeard is attacking this quest with more urgency than his competitors, because a prophecy told the old

pirate that he only had two weeks to live. And actually getting this fountain to grant eternal life is not as simple as a sip. There are specific chalices from which to drink, plus a mermaid’s tear must be collected and mixed in the proper grail. Mermaids aren’t the most sentimental creatures — getting one to cry and capturing the tear is no easy task. About those mermaids: These have little in common with the sweet Ariel from “The Little Mermaid.” Sure, they are gorgeous, seductive half-fishes, but they also have nasty sharp teeth and are bent on spiriting lonely sailors to their briny deaths. In “Stranger Tides,” one of the most effective scenes involves a major attack by mermaids — possibly the most memorable sequence in the film. But the balance of the mermaid-fueled saga is just soggy. A subplot romance involving young clergyman Philip (Sam Claflin) and captured mermaid Serena (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) feels like waterlogged “Twilight” or a poorly conceived sap for “Pirates” fans missing the Keira Knightley-Orlando Bloom love story arc. “On Stranger Tides” can be forgiven for a weak Bstory, but director Rob Marshall (“Nine,” “Chicago”) does nothing to correct the gravest error committed by predecessor Gore Verbinski on the second and third films: overpacking the action. Like “Curse of the Black Pearl” and “At World’s End,” everything in “On Stranger

Tides” is supposed to be exciting — hey, it’s a summer blockbuster, and that is called getting the job done. But because viewers are never given any time to linger on a single image or let action sequences resonate, it all becomes visual noise. Marshall keeps the pace so breakneck for fear of boredom that “On Stranger Tides” becomes tedious as a result. And it certainly does not help that the 3-D effect barely gets implemented. Sure, there are a few swords jutting from the screen but not enough to justify two hours and seventeen minutes of wearing silly glasses. But then there is Depp, and with Knightley and Bloom having sailed into the sunset on this franchise, “On Stranger Tides” all belongs to him. Able players such as Cruz and McShane do well by their characters, but Capt. Jack Sparrow is the reason to see “On Stranger Tides.” It is rare for an actor in a major film franchise to have as much creative latitude in developing a character’s quirks and traits, and it is clear throughout “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” that Depp loves Jack Sparrow. Putting this character front and center was a strong decision. But if there is a fifth voyage for this series, Disney should give Jack Sparrow a story worth treasuring instead of a chest half-stocked with fool’s gold. —George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

Plenty to love, hate in ‘Fast five’

E

laborate and excessive to the extreme, the fifth film in “The Fast and the Furious” franchise mashes up the physics-defying street-racing action of its predecessors with a daring heist scheme and casts Dwayne Johnson as a foil to Vin Diesel’s antihero Dominic Toretto. Film fans looking for a testosterone-drenched, adrenaline-pumping, nitrous-fueled, explosionand bullet-riddled ride need look no further than “Fast Five.” Guilty pleasure seekers will find plenty to relish, as director Justin Lin revs up the story with a fleet of careening and crashing vehicles, a bevy of scantily clad women and beefy bad boys and a reunion of intriguing supporting characters from other films in the series. But with a more than two-hour runtime, “Fast Five” proves the cinematic equivalent of scarfing a gallon of triple-chocolate ice cream laced with Pop Rocks. The movie may well induce a headache, upset stomach and should-have-known-better feeling. “Fast Five” picks up right where the fourth installment, 2009’s “Fast & Furious,” left off, with former federal agent Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker)

and his girlfriend Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) pulling off a spectacular and absolutely implausible assault on the prison bus transporting her brother Dom, a gifted street racer and criminal with a heart of gold. Now fugitives, Brian and Mia flee to Rio de Janeiro expecting to reunite with Dom, but his pal Vince (Matt Schulze) has not heard from him in weeks. Vince had hoped to recruit Dom for a job stealing high-end cars from a freight train, and since they are strapped for cash, Brian and Mia take her brother’s place on the crew. The job goes bad, but Dom arrives at the last minute to help Mia escape with a Ford GT40. The Drug Enforcement Administration agents who seized the cars are killed in the crossfire, and Dom and Brian are captured by Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), the Brazilian crime kingpin who set up the job and desperately wants something in the GT40. Blamed for the deaths of the DEA agents, Dom and Brian are bumped to the top of the mostwanted list. Tough-as-nails Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) arrives in Rio with his crack team of fugitive apprehension specialists, and he also recruits local cop Elena Neves (Elsa Pataky) as his team’s translator.

Dom and Brian give Reyes’ goons the slip, disassemble the muscle car and find a computer chip containing details of the drug lord’s $100 million money-laundering network. They enlist some of their best pals from the franchise to travel to Brazil and help. The players include Brian’s fast-talking friend Roman (Tyrese Gibson), tech-savvy hustler Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), recon expert and wheelman Han (Sung Kang), weapons specialist and all-around tough cookie Gisele (Gal Gadot), and explosives authorities Leo (Tego Calderon) and Santos (Don Omar). As the team plots the complicated heist, the chemistry among the secondary characters provides a welcome break from all the crash-bang action and from the wooden acting by Walker, Diesel and Johnson. “Fast Five” runs on too long, crams in too many races and follows the usual heist movie course a little too closely. But amid the bombastic action set pieces, the sequel, which won’t be the last installment in the series, also takes a few audacious curves, including a surprising stinger worth waiting out the credits. —Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment writer

Natalie Portman, an Academy Award winner for “Black Swan,” plays the character in the upcoming “Thor” movie and says the character takes into account the way women’s roles have changed since the 1960s.

Though many things have changed from the comic-book series, Portman said one element that remained was Jane Foster as a grounding force for Thor. “Jane in the comic books is a nurse, and now she’s an astrophysics doctoral candidate,” Portman said. “Things have been updated. Women can be scientists in different ways now.” “Thor” stars Chris Hemsworth as the titular character, the thunder god of myth who has been exiled to Earth by his father, Odin. On Earth, he meets up with Foster. “She has some family things that echo Thor’s familial situation, so that there’s that sort of a bond between them,” Portman said. “They have a common quest because he’s trying to get back home, and her whole interest of study is these connections between dimensions.” Portman and director Kenneth Branagh wanted to make the character of Foster believable as a scientist. “Ken and I talked a lot before we started about how to make Jane like a realistic scientist on screen, not just make her someone like the

Denise Richards in Bond with the glasses and so she’s a scientist,” she said. “But we talked about how real scientists are kind of like artists. They’re able to imagine things that aren’t there.” Foster has been portrayed with various looks and motivations throughout the comic book character’s near-50-year run. Portman said the “Thor” film had to distill all of the characters and storylines down to fit into a 2:10 running time. “The challenge, more for the writers than for us even, but for the writers and for Ken as the director, is finding one tone, choosing which of the stories to tell, because obviously all of these are sagas that have gone on for decades,” she said. >ABOUT THE DUNK What Kevin Durant did to Brendan Haywood early in Game 2 might require some capital letters. THE DUNK. The Thunder star posterized the Mavs big man with a rim-rocking, one-handed dunk. Less than 24 hours later, The Dunk had already been watched 162,000 times on YouTube. “I watched it a hundred times,” Thunder teammate Nate Robinson said. He knows a little something about highlight-making dunks. Robinson won the NBA Dunk Contest three times, the only player to ever claim that many dunk titles. “He doesn’t weight that much,” Robinson said of Durant, “so for him to go up against a big like that? Yeah, that was impressive.” Late in the first quarter, Durant inbounded the ball to guard Eric Maynor, who gave it right back to Durant. He took a couple dribbles toward the top of the key, and when he turned the corner, the lane to the basket was open. Durant had already gotten a step on Peja Stojakovic, so he went hard to the rim. He jumped and drew contact from the 7-foot Haywood, but he was able to throw down a one-hand slam. “It’s very rare that a guy gets that type of momentum in half-court play,” veteran Nazr Mohammed said. “That’s a play that you would see in the full court where a guy would get a good run up the court, build up speed. He basically did that from three-point line to the rim with a defender chasing him. “I watched the game again ... and his head was above the rim, so it was impressive. It was one of the most impressive dunks that I’ve ever seen.” Thunder big man Kendrick Perkins said, “It was nasty. It was up there. It was definitely a top-notch dunk. He did what he had to do, and I like what he did after the fact. It showed toughness. It showed heart.” What Durant did was bark at Haywood and draw a technical foul. Not that anyone seemed to care. “To me, they should’ve had a KD Alert like they did Blake Griffin with a dunk like that,” Robinson said of the ESPN feature that cut into programming this past season to show especially nasty dunks from the Clippers rookie. “Everybody needed an alert.” Story by Jenni Carlson, Staff Writer

‘QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE’ – QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE

Q

ueens of the Stone Age’s self-titled debut album was out of print for a decade — an unusual circumstance given both the legendary nature of the album and the Queens’ subsequent good fortune as a dominant force in hard rock. “Queens of the Stone Age” was originally released in 1998 by Loosegroove, the label run by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, but the company folded two years later and no other labels stepped up to keep the album in circulation. QOTSA leader Josh Homme’s deluxe rerelease on his own label, Rekords Rekords, confirms that his band’s first release not only holds up but serves as important connective tissue between Homme’s first band, Kyuss, and later albums such as “Rated R” and “Songs for the Deaf.” The playing on “Queens of the Stone Age” is not as extraordinarily precise as subsequent works, but the key surprise is how complete Homme’s concept sounds straight out of the gate. “Regular John” and “Avon,” the two opening salvos, show that Homme was mastering hard-rock song structures and had moved sharply away from Kyuss’ stoner-rock style. His off-kilter musical sense of humor was coming to the fore, as well: “You Would Know” is accented with touch-tone dialing and gaseous moaning, but the star attraction is Homme’s expert riffing and bassist Nick Oliveri’s bottom-heavy groove. This version of QOTSA was exercising different muscles than it had used in Kyuss. The instrumental “These Aren’t the Droids You’re Looking For” is full of jumps and false-starts before locking into its dark, intricate groove, and the goofy closer, “I Was a Teenage Hand Model,” shows that Homme could stretch into Ween-style damaged soul. This reissue is not just for die-hards — “Queens of the Stone Age” belongs in the band’s canon. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘TURTLENECK & CHAIN’ – THE LONELY ISL AND

T

urtleneck & Chain,” the second album by The Lonely Island, works because Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer build credible beats behind their awkward sex jokes. Most of these tracks boom like Summer 2011 club bangers hijacked by a clowning preteen. The lion’s share of these songs bowed as “SNL Digital Shorts” on “Saturday Night Live,” but the true test of “Turtleneck & Chain” is whether they work without sight gags, and for the most part, they do. Without question, the song of the moment is “Jack Sparrow,” Samberg and company’s collaboration with lowbrow faux-soul moaner Michael Bolton. The Islanders are in it for slinging cash at the club, but Bolton just wants to belt out passionate paeans to “Pirates of the Caribbean” and the “new classics” on TNT. Bolton achieves hilarity because he sings his goofball lines with the same grating auto-conviction he brought to adult contemporary radio 20 years ago — well played, sir. Nearly as good is the similarly themed title track featuring Snoop Dogg and “Attracted to Us,” which features Beck showing more humor on record than he’s delivered since “Midnite Vultures.” As expected, not all the comedy on “Turtleneck & Chain” works, mainly because it’s too “on the nose” — “Rocky” probably started as a parody of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s “I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson” but winds up as an inferior copy of the novelty track. But “I Just Had Sex” (featuring Akon) and the sweet-and-sour synth ballad with Santigold, “After Party,” make certain that “Turtleneck & Chain” continues to work long after the guffaws subside. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor LOOKATOKC.COM

he Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device could change your life. Imagine a tool that lets you instantaneously cross vast distances by blowing holes through the time-space continuum. Put one hole in your office, one hole in your living room, and boom: No more endless commutes. No more polluo tion-spewing traffic jams. No more drivetim time radio. U Unfortunately, the portal gun’s range, for no is limited to the environs of Aperture now, La Laboratories. And its inventors – along with ev other human in the Aperture complex – every ap appear to be dead. That’s the dire situation at the beginning of “Portal 2/.” And GLaDOS, the psychotic ar cial intelligence you dismantled in the artifi o original “Portal,” is back in charge — and she i isn’t happy. The 2007 “Portal” was a delightful s surprise. Initially packaged with four other g games as “The Orange Box,” its cerebral puzzles proved a welcome change-of-pace from Valve’s usual bread-and-butter, the first-person shooter. Each room in Aperture Laboratories is, essentially, a three-dimensional maze; you have to figure out how to use the portal gun and

a handful of other gadgets to reach an inconveniently placed exit. Since the franchise has graduated from experiment to headliner, there are many more puzzles in “Portal 2” — and they’ve become even more devious. There’s also a batch of clever new toys to play with. Aerial Faith Plates fling your character across bottomless pits. Gels make the floor bouncy or slippery. Hard Light Bridges can be used to cross gaps or block turret fire. And the beloved Weighted Companion Cube returns with a cousin, the Laser Redirection Cube. The most important returning character is GLaDOS (voiced by Ellen McLain), whose once helpful demeanor has curdled into murderous sarcasm. (“We’ve both said a lot of things you’re going to regret,” she informs you early on.) But two new voices make equally memorable impressions. Wheatley, played by Stephen Merchant of “The Ricky Gervais Show,” is a chatty, nervous A.I. who’s eager to help you escape. Cave Johnson, performed by J.K. Simmons (“Spider-Man,” “The Closer”), is Aperture’s long-dead CEO, whose gung-ho encouragement devolves into fatalism. The actors have created three of the most distinctive characters in video games — an amazing feat, considering they’re (mostly) disembodied voices. They are helped immea-

surably by an often hilarious script by a team led by former game critic Erik Wolpaw. It took me about nine hours to finish the single-player adventure — but a few of those hours consisted of simply staring at the screen, trying to conjure up a solution to a particularly thorny brain-teaser. The puzzles are scrupulously fair; you’re given exactly what you need in each room, and success depends on strategy rather than reflexes. Unfortunately, if you can’t solve a puzzle you’re stuck. I found that some of the trickier solutions came to me if I stepped away for a while; it may also help to ask a friend to take a second look. And while you’ve got company, you can tackle an assortment of two-player, cooperative “Portal 2” puzzles. Each player commands one robot, and you have to work together to solve each maze. They’re easier than the solo campaign – but two robots with two portal guns make the action a bit more hectic. There were some doubts that the “Portal” prototype could be stretched into a full-fledged (and full-priced) game, but Valve has delivered a sequel that builds upon the original while retaining its innovative spirit. In a market that’s drowning in lookalike first-person shooters, the thought-provoking “Portal 2” is a blast. – From The Associated Press

The working girl pump is back. Today, she’s sporting a Sexy platform with a higher heel than in the ’80s. But the working girl looks awfully bland when compared with some of spring and summer’s more outspoken shoe trends. Nude is the color of the season’s shoes, but don’t get too comfortable. Take the nude peep-toe Sam Edelman pump. From the front, she seems innocent enough. But run your hands along the soft, supple leather toward the back of the shoe, and you might get hurt. Spikes the likes of a vicious dog’s collar rock the heel of this bad girl. Inspired by the Christian Vuitton designs worn by celebrities, these Sam Edelmans are one way you can kick up your spring and summer wardrobe. Pair these dangerous heels with a plain dress, and that dress comes to life. Pair the foot armor with a big feminine floral print, and you’ve got just the right juxtaposition between good girl floral and rocker chic.

1

Wedges are still hot, especially when incorporated with a nice platform. “The reason people keep coming back to wedges is that, A, you get the height that you want and, B, you get the comfort level,” said Alex Bratton, fashion director and buyer for On a Whim in Classen Curve. The platform supports your foot by y taking pressure off the ball of the foot. Even though the shoes look extremely tall, all, she said, the height of the platform m means your foot has to arch less. Many designers these days are taking g comfort into consideration more. Lines from Anne ne Klein Flex, Born and other comfort-oriented styles es help women with high arches, painful heels and other foot issues get back into wearing heels. At Pink Sugar, Petree said she carries styles from Donald Pliner and Vaneli that are more comfortable than some other designers. But in heels, comfort is only one consideration. “That’s one thing I don’t specialize in is comfort shoes,” Petree admits, laughing. She’s more into the high-fashion side of footwear. She wants to carry shoes you won’t find anywhere else. And look for more and more safari-inspired colors and styles to be cropping up between now and fall. Militaryinspired olive or khaki colors mixed with tribal or safari style beading and laser cutouts on leather will transition into fall well, Bratton said.
