or the past two years, I’ve waited patiently for Spotify to get its American visa. This month, the music service with over 15 million available songs finally was granted a green card. Spotify began in Europe in 2008, providing virtually unlimited access to music. While Pandora remains the primary service for music fans in the U.S., the Spotify invasion could shift the
balance in short order. Most Pandora or Last.fm users are probably used to upstart music services trying to pull them away, but a comfort zone is not easily vacated — Pandora achieved its U.S. dominance through the brilliant concept of the Music Genome Project, which identifies common traits between different artists and songs. Pandora is able to bypass the standard identifiers linking artists such as era, style and geography — this is how the Australian electro-rock band Cut Copy can lead to both a modern DJ collective such as Justice and the 1980s new romantic band Ultravox.
Pandora finds commonalities, both through its intuitive system and the input of its users. Spotify could change things by taking the random element out of the equation. The service, which had to reach agreements with the top four record labels in the U.S. before executing an effective launch, simply gives it all to the listener. There are still holdout artists and it’s not hard to imagine who they are (Hint: the greatest pop band of all time and the biggest hard rock band of the 1970s), but Spotify’s reach is enviable, even kind of bewildering. In my initial test, I did random searches for Sex Pistols, violinist Joshua Bell, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Kanye West, the 1980s Los Angeles band Thelonious Monster, the Japanese avant-metal band Boris and experimental jazz musician John Zorn. They all came up. Every single one. There are odd holes in Spotify: Kate Bush’s “Hounds of Love” is missing, though everything else in her catalog is there. But still, I feel a new obsession coming on. Next issue, I will write about my first two weeks on Spotify — that is, if I’ve not been rendered utterly useless by endless music searches. Welcome to our country, Spotify — you’ll find we’re good partners who will listen to you.

Never met a band I didn’t like
W
ill Rogers said he never met a man he didn’t like, and I’m the same way about music. My interest requirements are minimal. If a band has instruments and lacks juggalo fans then I’m sure to discover something I like. My spider senses lead me to believe this attitude plays a role in a growing trend I’ve noticed with Okie bands. A lot of local musicians play in multiple groups. Surprisingly, the recent increase of homegrown music festivals, venues and projects isn’t hindering this trend, it’s exploding it. I threw out a question over the interwebs to gauge the number of musicians who play in more than one Oklahoma-based band. The response was overwhelming and a few names showed up multiple times. Brian Adair (Brother Gruesome), Nathan Price (Broncho), Chad and Jarod of Blackwatch Studios and Kyle Mayfield (The Uglysuit) were commended for their musical multiplicity. I spoke with Mayfield over the phone and learned he’s active in six local bands: Feathered Rabbit, Junebug Spade, Mannachine, Larry Chin, The Aphids and Slogan Machines. Incredible, I know people who haven’t seen six live shows in their lifetime. Mayfield picked up a bass guitar when he was 13 and never put it down. He went to school with his bandmates and they turned to him because many teenagers play “Halo” and not a bass guitar. Mayfield said he pursues several musical outlets because it’s a challenge, and he doesn’t see a point in limiting his interests. This multiple band trend hasn’t limited itself to OKC. In Tulsa, Hank Hanewinkel started tearing up drum sets at age two. Today, he designs concert posters for a living and plays with four bands: Fiawna Forté, The Red Alert, And There Stand Empires and Shade Out. Two of those groups are writing new songs. One has a new album near completion. His newest project is recording an album by the end of the month. “I have every limb and appendage in the music industry,” he said in a phone inverview. “Music is what I was born to do.” Hanewinkel plans to perform three sets at the Free Tulsa music festival on July 29-30, but he’s not sure when and where each show will be. I don’t blame him. At last year’s festival, he performed with five bands in G.I. Joe-melting heat. It’s remarkable seeing how hard these two musicians and many others are pushing themselves. I suggest giving props to musicians who play in multiple bands but don’t make them wait up too long because they’re probably on their way to another gig.

‘Burlesque’ all about entertainment FROM THE BASIC TO THE ADVANCED, BURLESQUE IS REALLY ALL ABOUT BEING SEXY AND NOT SEXUAL
I
found myself at the Slipper Room in New York’s Lower East Side two years ago, completely naive to the world of burlesque. It was a guy’s idea, as you would expect. It just looked like a typical bar with a tiny theatre at the front. What I was about to see would make my mouth drop in awe. The first lady to take the stage did a feather dance with big pink feather fans covering her female parts. She strategically moved the feathers through the entire dance without showing a single body part even though everyone was hoping to get a glimpse. The next dancer to hit the stage was dressed as an illegal substance – one that you smoke. She was painted in all green with orange sky-high hair. She was extremely flexible in her routine and wrapped as well as unwrapped herself replicating that substance I shall not name. Further into the night were less dancing and more shock and awe with full nudity and the occasional tip jar. While I left wondering what had just happened to me, it didn’t stop me from going back many times. Fast-forward to last week when I talked to a friend who had just gone to the Prohibition Room to see the 7 Deadly Sins Burlesque Revue. He thought it was great, but was also confused as to what it was supposed to be. I felt the same way at the Slipper Room. What is burlesque? It’s been around for centuries, but the definition is still unknown to me. Well, I looked it up. The definition in itself means to “send up; to satirize; to make a mockery of.” Doesn’t sound too sexy, but it didn’t start out that way. In the mid 19th century, “burlesque” entertainment was geared toward the lower and middle classes in Great Britain and the United States. They would make fun of the operas, plays and social habits of the upper classes. Twenty years later, burlesque transformed into the sexier side we see today. Burlesque dancers over the years include Josephine Baker (an Ernest Hemingway favorite), Bettie Page, Lydia Thomson, Gypsy Rose Lee and, more recently, Dita Von Teese. Some people falsely call burlesque dancers “strippers”. The regulations in Oklahoma are quite the same for burlesque artists and strippers as far as how little clothes they can wear, but the form is very dissimilar. Lynn Simon of Teaze Dance & Fitness describes it as more of a variety show.

“Much like vaudeville, but sexier,” she said. “It walks the line of being sexual, glamorous, while adding comedy at the same time.” The clothes are much more elaborate too with corsets, feathers, gloves, and decorated costumes. The key word in that sentence was “clothes” because they are actually worn for the most part. One of the main factors I notice that set burlesque dancers apart is their body type. While some are tiny, there are a lot of thicker girls and especially girls with hourglass figures. That’s probably because it’s less about the shape of the body and more about the confidence they show with their body. Dita Von Teese is extreme with her body. Rumor has it she shrunk her 21 inch waist to a 16 inch waist by regularly wearing a corset. It makes sense she would want to look as authentic to the early dancers as possible when women in the Victorian era wore corsets constantly and so tight they’d have internal health issues. I found out there are different types of burlesque. There’s the neo-burlesque, which is a more modern type of the risqué entertainment and started in the 90s. Some burlesque features singing by the dancers, hence the recent movie with Christina Aguilera, “Burlesque.” For some routines, it’s about comedy and for others it’s about the costume. What binds it all together is the sexiness of it. I got a quick crash course in burlesque and learned the bump, grind, shimmy and shake. Those are the basic moves of traditional burlesque. The instructor at Teaze Dance & Fitness told me it’s all about the tease and not about the stripping. It enlightened me when she said this. She also said it’s about being sexy and not sexual, a revolution that made the definition of burlesque clear to me. New York has been the centerpiece for the early American popularity and the more recent resurgence, hence the New York Burlesque Festival. Documentaries, feature films, annual burlesque competitions are all evidence of the resurgence of the scantily dressed art form. Some may find it derogatory to women, but Simon sees it differently. “Burlesque is definitely a freedom of expression and feminism,” she said.

‘SONGS IN A MINOR: 10TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTOR’S EDITION’ – ALICIA KEYS
A
decade in the music business isn’t what it used to be — the first 10 years of the 21st century delivered less measurable stylistic change on the pop charts than any decade since the 1940s. So the arrival of a 10th anniversary collector’s edition of Alicia Keys’ disarmingly confident 2001 debut, “Songs in A Minor,” feels oddly premature, because not only has Keys’ album aged well, it is more accurate to say it has not aged at all. Keys was 19 years old when she recorded “A Minor,” which makes the sure-footed execution of the album still so impressive. She was approaching soul music with the ears of a classicist, giving deep tracks such as “Rock Wit U” a resonant Curtis Mayfield vibe and announcing her chops on the opening “Piano & I” by playing Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” under her spoken-word introduction. Singles such as “Fallin’” and “A Woman’s Worth” made an impression because Keys was not responding to any production or songwriting styles of her time, and while the influence of hip-hop is clearly present in “Girlfriend,” it is woven into the song’s largely organic soul foundation. This collector’s edition includes a disc of rarities and a DVD chronicling the production of “Songs in A Minor,” an album that went on to sell 12 million copies globally and instantly cemented Keys as a force in pop and soul. Clive Davis’ mentorship and his tireless promotion of the album meant that the stakes were set unusually high for the debut, but Keys proved to have staying power on her subsequent three studio albums. If Davis intended her as the more artistically credible inheritor of a spotlight previously occupied by stars such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, the decade that has passed since “Songs in A Minor” proves that Davis saw in Keys a singer who could tran— George Lang, LookatOKC Editor scend her youth and sustain a lifelong career.

‘RED RIVER BLUE’ – BL AKE SHELTON
F
rom the sounds of Blake Shelton’s new album, “Red River Blue,” the honeymoon definitely isn’t over for newlywed Oklahoma country music stars Shelton and Miranda Lambert. Opening with the tantalizing smash single “Honey Bee,” the Tishomingo resident’s eighth studio album practically oozes matrimonial bliss, with a few musical lovers’ spats and a couple of Shelton’s signature party anthems cannily tossed in to churn up variety. With all the romantic atmosphere, “Red River Blue” also crackles with energy: The Ada native and producer Scott Hendricks hurried to complete the album to capitalize on Shelton’s skyrocketing career trajectory, which got an extra boost with his TV breakout as a celebrity coach on the surprise hit reality show “The Voice.” The lovable “Honey Bee,” which buzzed to the top of the country charts in just 10 weeks and already has become Shelton’s first platinum single, lays a sweet course for “Red River Blue.” He cut his second single, a stirring cover of contemporary Christian singer Dave Barnes’ “God Gave Me You,” after an argument with Lambert that could have ended their romance. He and his bride make beautiful music when she backs him on the gorgeous title track, about an Oklahoma man and his Texas woman separated by more than the Red River. Based on the title and past experience, fans might expect a raucous drinking song from “Ready to Roll,” but Shelton instead shuffles winningly through a country-soul ode to staying in with his girl, complete with grooving bass lines, horns and guitars perfect for playful dancing. The singer lets his rowdy side surface on the clever party romp “Get Some,” co-written by Zac Maloy, former frontman of Oklahoma City band The Nixons, and the breezy homophone celebration “Hey.” — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer LOOKATOKC.COM

‘WITHIN AND WITHOUT’ – WASHED OUT
I
n lesser hands, chillwave can veer perilously close to lifestyle music — atmospheric sound programming to match midcentury modern furnishings in high-end hotels. But much like the best work by Neon Indian, Memory Tapes and their hip-hop brethren in The Weeknd, Washed Out’s full-length debut, “Within and Without,” grafts the gauzy nostalgia of the genre onto rocksolid melodic foundations for this unrelentingly beautiful collection. Ernest Greene’s one-man laptop project builds on the comparatively lo-fi sounds of his previous EP thanks to Ben Allen’s expansive production and Greene’s infallible sense of mood and melody. As the cover image suggests, “Within and Without” establishes a romantic through-line on its first track, “Eyes Be Closed,” with Greene layering vocals over vintage synthesizers, the mix becoming more lush and ornate as the song progresses. The approach reaches its melodic peak on “Amor Fati,” a Latin phrase used frequently in Friedrich Nietzsche’s work meaning “love of one’s fate,” in which Greene steps up the tempo even as he extols the virtues of passivity. And on “You and I,” he finds the perfect vocal foil in Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek, whose seductive voice intertwines with Greene’s in seamless harmony. Lists of “bedroom albums” typically include classics such as Roxy Music’s “Avalon,” and this disc suggests a modern take on Bryan Ferry lothario music — that is, if Ferry had not remained in a kind of luxurious musical stasis for the past 30 years. Fittingly, Washed Out caps off the album with the nearly percussion-free “A Dedication,” a swirl of synthesized woodwinds, piano and echoing keyboards providing a fine denouement for this hypnotic after-hours soundscape. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor <<<

ideo-game publishers seem to believe their audience would rather risk sunburn than have fun in air-conditioned comfort, so you won’t find many major new games in stores during the summer. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing new out there — and you don’t need to search any further than the online services Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Store. One studio that’s made a big impression in the download-only market is Double Fine Productions, led by industry legend Tim Schafer. Its new release is called “Trenched” (Microsoft, for Xbox 360, $15), and it’s a witty mash-up of the third-person shooter and tower defense genres. You control a “trench,” a giant, walking mech that you can deck out with machine guns, cannons, grenade launchers and other weapons. You can also place a limited number of stationary turrets to help defend your territory. You’ll need all that to save Western civilization from the Tubes, an electronic
‘X B OX L I VE A RCA DE & P L AYS TATI ON S T O R E ’ menace bent on enslaving humanity. “Trenched” isn’t as silly as Double Fine’s previous downloadable titles, “Costume Quest” and “Stacked,” though it does have some laugh-outloud gags. (From a menu describing an olive paint job you can apply to your trench: “This paint is not actually made of olives. Please do not eat it.”) On the other hand, the game play is more expertly paced, smoothly ramping up the difficulty as it provides access to more powerful weapons. It’s a relatively short campaign, but the ability to join forces with up to three friends online boosts its replay value. Three stars out of four. In “Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax” (Marvelous Entertainment, for Xbox 360, $10), you have just 30 seconds to stop a madman from unleashing Armageddon. Fail, and you can reset and try again. Succeed, and the credits roll — until you discover there’s another madman waiting in the next town over. Over the course of more than 60 quests, “Half-Minute Hero” deftly
parodies all the cliches and conventions of Japanese role-playing games like “Final Fantasy.” As someone who has spent hundreds of hours saving the world, I really got a kick out of saving two or three during a TV commercial break. Three stars. “Red Johnson’s Chronicles” (Lexis Numerique, for PlayStation 3, $13) is less frenetic but still absorbing. It’s a detective story laced with brainteasers, much like Nintendo’s Professor Layton games, but the mystery is more downto-earth: Who killed a much-loathed street thug? It’s not a particularly surprising or rewarding case, and the end game — in which you have to answer about 50 multiple-choice questions to build an indictment — is a drag. However, during the investigation you have to solve a few dozen puzzles of observation and logic. These challenges are generally clever, and a few are downright diabolical (but fair). “Red Johnson” is an odd beast, mixing noir atmospherics, Soviet-style graphics, a jazzy soundtrack and a protagonist who LOOKATOKC.COM
looks more hipster than gumshoe. But it delivers a satisfying set of puzzles for a good price. Two-and-a-half stars. “Magic: The Gathering, Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012” (Wizards of the Coast, for Xbox 360 and PS3, $10) may be a mouthful, but it offers a slick introduction to the venerable collectible card game. The object is to wear down your opponent by flinging spells or monsters at him while blocking his counterattacks. There are dozens of card types, with 10 different 60-card decks, and this digital translation does a fine job of teaching you how to play them. The core campaign pits you against a succession of increasingly tough computerized opponents. You can also invite two other humans to join you in epic three-on-one battles against extra-powerful “Archenemies.” Or you can just dive into online one-on-one matches. I haven’t played Magic in years, but “Planeswalkers 2012” got me hooked again. – From The Associated Press

That is, until “Wedding Crashers” scored such a surprise hit in the heat of 2005 and pioneered the way for a rash of R-rated counterprogramming in summers since. Already this summer, moviegoers with a taste for adult-oriented raunchiness or without youngsters to placate have found their guilty R-pleasures in “The Hangover Part II,” “Bridesmaids” and “Bad Teacher.” Now the ante is upped with the zestfully rude and offbeat “Horrible Bosses,” a nutty, naughty “Nine to Five” for working guys who fantasize about taking deadly revenge on abusive employers. Deftly directed by Seth Gordon (best known for the hilarious cult video-game documentary “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters”), the movie brings together a top-shelf cast with a wildly zany but tightly written script to create a darkly queasy comedy that’ll likely make you cringe as often as it makes you laugh. — Nick, Kurt and Dale (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day) — like their jobs but hate their horrible bosses. Kurt’s boss, Dave Harkin (Kevin Spacey), is a cruel corporate shark with a murderous streak; Kurt’s boss, Bobby Pellitt (Colin Farrell), is a pretentious tool determined to run the family business into the ground, and Dale’s boss, Dr. Julia Harris, D.D.S. (Jennifer Aniston), is a sexual predator keen on luring naive Dale into the sack. Through a series of unlikely comic turns, the workingstiff pals become so harassed and desperate that they enlist the aid of a weirdly tattooed barroom hustler named Mother(bleep!) Jones (Jamie Foxx) and hatch a crazy, “Strangers on a Train” scheme to murder their three horrible bosses. With chaotic nods to “Ruthless People” and “Throw Momma From the Train,” the convoluted plot spins wildly out of control and leaves our three anti-heroes (who increasingly come to resemble the Three Stooges) frantically struggling to extricate themselves from the bloody mess that ensues. Despite the story’s macabre context (murder for

laughs), the male leads score with their mile-a-minute buddy patter and amusing frat-boy chemistry. The writing here is quick, cutting and witty. Day (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Sudeikis (“Saturday Night Live”) carry most of the doofus comic freight, while the likable Bateman (“Arrested Development”) acts as befuddled straight man. But the real comic firepower comes from the high-profile supporting players: a dark-wigged Aniston playing deviously and seductively against type; a conniving Spacey echoing the cold menace of his “Glengarry Glen Ross” gamesmanship, and Foxx bringing hilarious street-hustler jive to the dicey shenanigans. However, the showstopper performance comes from Farrell, who with pot belly and comb-over seems to be channeling “King of Kong’s” real-life Donkey Kong maestro Billy Mitchell in his most vainglorious antics. As “Horrible Bosses” can attest, while there’s nothing funny about workplace harassment, a richly satisfying comic catharsis can arise from fantasizing about our most dire and dastardly revenge on bad bossy bosses. —Dennis King, Wimgo.com

The star attractions of ‘Zookeepr’ are the animals
I
t’s always a dubious sign when you watch the coming-attractions trailer for a movie and immediately identify other movies that it filches from (or draws inspiration from, if you want to be charitable). With “Zookeeper,” starring big-guy Kevin James in full Jackie Gleason form, the immediate influences are all too obvious. His upbeat, bighearted, blue-collar zookeeper Griffin Keyes is a kindred spirit to the actor’s earnest security guard in “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” (who was a direct offshoot of James’ regular-guy delivery man in “The King of Queens”). And the fanciful notion of zoo animals, mute and inscrutable by day, becoming antic mischief makers and chatterbox lonely-hearts advisers when the zoo gates are locked appears to draw heavily on the after-hours fantasy of “Night at the Museum” and its sequel. And then, of course, there’s the whole “Doctor Dolittle” thing. But what “Zookeeper” lacks in narrative freshness, it sort of makes up for in technical wizardry.
James and his human co-stars — Leslie Bibb as Stephanie, Griffin’s self-centered and fickle girlfriend who thinks zoo keeping is a dead-end job, and Rosario Dawson as Kate, Griffin’s dedicated fellow zookeeper and obvious soul mate — might populate a bland and predictable comic-romantic story (with five credited writers, which is never a good sign). But the animal cast of supporting players is an allstar ensemble of real zoo creatures, one big animatronic ape and an amazing menagerie of A-list actors lending them sassy attitude and vibrant voice. When Griffin considers forsaking his much-loved zoo gig and taking a fast-lane job as car salesman, to satisfy Stephanie’s materialistic lusts, the zoo animals agree to break their ancient code of silence and talk to their beloved keeper. Their plan: counsel Griffin on the fine points of wooing and winning the female of the species. Naturally, this sets up a lot of over-the-top comic business for James to mug and muddle his way through. But the best laughs are scored by the animals, with computer-generated imagery animating
their talking mouths. There are great wisecracks and one-liners delivered by Donald the laconic capuchin monkey (voiced by Adam Sandler), Joe the pugnacious lion (Sylvester Stallone), Janet the patient lioness (Cher), Jerome the blustery bear (Jon Favreau), Barry the elephant (filmmakerJudd Apatow), Mollie the jive-talking giraffe (Maya Rudolph) and others. The only fake animal in the cast is Bernie, a melancholy gorilla (gravel-voiced Nick Nolte), who bonds with Griffin, enjoys a guys-night-out at TGI Fridays and convinces the forlorn zookeeper that his true calling is caring for the animals. (Bernie is an actor in an ape suit, topped with an astoundingly expressive mechanical head.) James is a highly likable lug who moves with a comic grace that recalls Gleason and who manages to sell this lightweight trifle with more conviction than it deserves. Still, the star attractions of “Zookeeper” are the funny, wisecracking animals that manage to upstage their human co-stars at every turn.

It’s been a long trip to this point for the stars of Harry Potter, but the end is finally here. STORY BY DENNIS KING, FROM WIMGO.COM s the three young wizards we’ve watched grow up on screen over eight Harry Potter movies mark the end of their 12-year journey with the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” one was conspicuous by his absence in the franchise’s final U.S. publicity push. As Warner Bros. orchestrated a jam-packed premiere weekend at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, complete with red-carpet hoopla and news conferences for assembled national media, Daniel Radcliffe was busy across town singing and dancing his way through a matinee performance of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” his second tour on the Broadway stage after a well-received role in “Equus” in 2007. But with Harry Potter himself unable to meet the press, his co-stars Emma “Hermione Granger” Watson and Rupert “Ron Weasley” Grint soldiered on like the two musketeers, patiently fielding endless questions about how it feels to see the series of magical movies drawn from J.K. Rowling’s best-selling novels come to an end. Both seemed subdued and wryly philosophical about this milestone in their careers and lives as they walked into a hotel ballroom packed with reporters. Watson, looking very chic with her hair cropped close, and wearing a fluffy, black and white Givenchy outfit, exuded the poised confidence of the articulate, Ivy League student she is (she’s studying at Brown University). CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 1 8
“This film was obviously incredibly challenging for me,” she said. “It really pushed me as an actress, but at the same time I was able to use a lot of my own genuine emotion that I felt about loss and all of it coming to an end. I was able to bring how I was feeling to the role. “A perfect example of that was the scene where we stand on the bridge after the battle (at Hogwarts),” she said. “And I remember feeling exactly how I guess Hermione would be feeling, which is kind of, wow, this is all coming to an end, look at all we’ve achieved. The set was actually built looking out over Leavesden Studios, which is where I grew up essentially and spent the last 12 years. So, not much acting required, really. It was all just there for me.” Grint, his ginger hair shaggy, was decked out in an oversize white T-shirt with an “I’m With You” logo. He seemed as boyish and appealingly goofy as Ron Weasley ever was. “It’s been a very weird time, really, kind of accepting the end,” he said. “Yeah, there’s that one scene where it’s the three of us after the battle, and we’re walking on the bridge, and the castle was destroyed behind us. There’s almost this kind of parallel at that moment with our lives, really. It’s over for us, as well. “We finished filming a year ago, and I was left with this quite empty feeling,” Grint continued. “And it’s taken me some time to fully accept that it’s over. And with the London premiere a few days ago, I got really emotional. I’m not usually affected by stuff like this in that way. But it’s going to take me some time to really let go of this because it really has been my childhood. For it to come down to this last film, it feels really weird.” Watson recalled the last scene she, Grint and Radcliffe shot together as being slightly anticlimactic. “The last shot we did was this kind of strange moment where we dive into the fireplace in the Ministry of Magic,” she said. “It was actually for Part 1, not Part 2. And so Dan, Rupert and I, one by one, jumped on a blue safety mat, basically, and that was the shot. “And it seemed like a strange one to go out on,” she said. “But, actually, David (director David Yates) made the point that we were like leaping into the unknown. It was like a perfect metaphor for what we were all about to go into. I can’t tell you how I felt when we were shooting it. I think I was just sort of numb.”
CHARACTER TRAITS
A
fter growing up with and embodying the characters of Hermione and Ron for so many years, both Watson and Grint profess to feeling close bonds to their fictional counterparts and sometimes even feeling certain traits creeping into their off-screen lives. “I’ve always felt this close connection to Ron, even from reading the books,” Grint said. “After 12 years playing this same guy every day, I think you do just naturally morph into him. And we have become this kind of ‘Ronpert’ thing, which I think will stay with me for a while. I think there will always be a bit of Ron in me for the rest of my life.” Watson, too, said she shares a lot of real-life traits with Hermione. “Not so much now, but I used to have her earnestness, an eagerness to please and do the right thing,” Watson said. “I was terrified of getting into trouble. I’m very heady in the same way that she is, kind of constantly thinking three, four moves ahead. I try and intellectualize a lot, which she does, obviously. I’m very determined; she is as well. I like to think that I’m very loyal in the same way that she is. I’m a bit of a feminist in the same way that she is. I will speak my mind. I feel as though so much of me went into her, and so much of her went into me. I can’t really differentiate too much any more. It’s all a bit of a blur.” With his signature red mop top, Ron Weasley has emerged as something of a standard-bearer for redheads of the world, and that’s something Grint said he’s proud of. “I get a lot of people from the ginger community shake my hand,” he said. “I’ve always been a quite proud ginger. I don’t know about America, but in England it’s not the coolest thing, really, having ginger hair, and they get quite unfairly hassled. It’s nice that Ron is quite a respected ginger guy. And Prince Harry, as well.” S E E R E ST O F STO RY O N PAG E 1 9

aving grown up as actors in the protective soundstage cocoons of England’s Pinewood and Leavesden studios, where all the Potter movies were shot, Watson and Grint now say they’re eager to venture out on their own into the bigger world of both studio and independent filmmaking. “Change is always scary, but I feel really excited,” Watson said of her future. “I feel like I’m entering a new chapter, like I get a fresh start, and there’s something really exciting about that. So I’m traveling this summer; I’m going back to school in the fall. I’ve got two years left until I complete my degree. “I have just finished a film called ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower,’ which was just the most incredible experience,” she said. “I had the best six weeks. I’m very excited about that movie. Having an experience like that outside of Harry Potter was what really convinced me that acting was really what I should be doing and that I was good at it. It really solidified that for me. “And now it’s just reading, reading, reading and trying to find that next thing that really speaks to me and that I really care about,” she said. “And finding great directors who will keep teaching me.” Since early on, Grint has made a habit of working on other, smaller films between his Harry Potter duties. His resume includes indie films such as “Thunderpants,” “Driving Lessons,” “Cherrybomb” and “Wild Target.” “I’ve always enjoyed stepping onto a different set when I could in between the (Potter) films,” he said. “Because Harry Potter is quite a hard thing to compare anything to. It’s this quite unique machine. “It’s a very different experience, these smaller films, because you’re not with this familiar crew that you’ve grown up with,” he said. “There are new people, and it takes me some time to adjust. But I learn a lot from these other films. It’s nice to be a different character. I want to do more of that. I did a film a few months ago, a World War II story (‘Comrade’). So, yeah, I’m going to move on and play different roles.”

ut no matter what roles the two move on to or how much success they have, Watson and Grint acknowledge they’ll always be strongly tied to the Harry Potter franchise. Both recall their first realizations that wherever they go, they’ll be recognized by fans. “It took me awhile to adjust to it. Because I was always quite a shy kid. And this sudden attention was quite strange,” Grint said. “But I remember it was in a shopping center near where I live, and the (first) film had just come out. I enjoyed it, really. It was quite cool. And it’s something I’ve never really hidden from. It’s just a part of it, but it’s a bit strange.” “It was when I was in a shantytown in Bangladesh,” Watson recalled, “and a boy stopped me in the street and said, ‘You’re the girl from Harry Potter.’ And I realized there’s no place in the world that I can go that isn’t somehow touched by this film franchise. It’s absolutely amazing. It reaches the farthest corners of the Earth. And the least likely places that you’d expect. And I realized, wow, I really can’t go anywhere (without being recognized).”

Time to say goodbye to Mr. Potter
J
. K. Rowling’s marvelous, magical, epic tale of a young wizard’s harrowing journey through the twisted philosophical thickets of good and evil doesn’t so much end (as ad copy declares) as come full circle in the rousing and deeply satisfying “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” Through more than 10 years, seven best-selling novels, eight movies and a gazillion-dollar cottage industry in ancillary goods, the Harry Potter franchise has charted an increasingly convoluted and darkening, but steady, course toward the earnest, owl-eyed Harry’s final showdown with the evil, reptilian Lord Voldemort. After last fall’s rather too deliberate table setting in “Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” the final chapters drawn from Rowling’s sprawling, 759-page book find in “Part 2” a firmer narrative footing and momentum to an appropriately thrilling, thunderclap climax (with a sweetly nostalgic, turning-of-seasons epilogue tacked on for good measure). Synopsis is hardly needed here because, first, the story’s density would require all manner of torturous verbal acrobatics, and, second, because anyone queuing up to see this film has most likely read the novels and/or seen all seven previous film adaptations and knows fully what to expect. Newbies would be wise to start at the

beginning, and Muggles might be advised to skip the whole thing entirely. But for the initiated, who take the full meaning of Voldemort (a chilling, snake-faced Ralph Fiennes), his smoky Death Eaters and their campaign to conquer the magical world and wipe out Muggle-kind, all the keys are in place by the swift opening of this film. Heroic Hogwarts wizards Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) are still on the hunt to find and destroy several Horcruxes, artifacts that hold pieces of Voldemort’s soul and make him essentially immortal. Director David Yates (who has helmed the last four Potter movies) and screenwriter Steve Kloves (who has written all but 2007’s “HP and the Order of the Phoenix”) ably corral the twisty narrative complexities of the endgame and move things swiftly through several elaborate CGI set pieces — a stealth visit to Gringotts Bank and a roller-coaster ride through its labyrinthine vaults; a fiery raid on the vast Room of Requirement, and, most impressively, the death-dealing Battle of Hogwarts pitting Harry’s loyal allies against Voldemort’s rampaging, bloodthirsty legions. The filmmakers also seem keenly aware of the elegiac nature of this final outing, and as they necessarily kill off certain beloved and bedeviled characters on the

bloody path to showdown, they also allow others to enjoy pithy if brief encores (most notably Maggie Smith’s starchy Minerva McGonagall, along with figures played by such British acting stalwarts as Gary Oldman, Emma Thompson, Jim Broadbent, Miriam Margolyes, Julie Walters, Michael Gambon and others). A few revelations relating to the cryptic past of ostensibly slithery Professor Severus Snape (Gothically creepy Alan Rickman) and his history with Dumbledore, Harry’s mother and the murder that started it all add to the deliciously ambiguous moral complexity of the tale. The film also features a humorously heroic appearance by heretofore obscure Hogwarts student Neville Longbottom (a very appealing Matthew Lewis) and some vague reconciliation between Harry and snide archrival Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) and more. But perhaps the most potent impression left is the rich feeling of having watched Harry, Hermione and Ron (and the child actors grown to accomplished young adults who played them) complete a storybook journey to courageous enlightenment over darkness and malevolence. It is finally what makes Rowling’s tale so timeless and her young protagonists such indelible literary heroes. —Dennis King, Wimgo.com

ANTA MONICA, Calif. – Mila Kunis did not want to do a romantic comedy. After asserting herself as a world-class scene stealer in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” one of the few recent romantic comedies to go against formula, Kunis said she was inundated with offers for boilerplate boy-girl cutesiness. Nothing about Kunis’ post-‘Marshall’ career, which includes acclaimed performances in “Black Swan,” “Extract” and “The Book of Eli,” suggested she should play a woman whose self-worth is tied to a man’s approval, and yet the scripts kept coming. So in order to do “Friends With Benefits,” a sex-without-commitment comedy costarring Justin Timberlake, something would have to change. “I didn’t do them for a reason,” Kunis told LOOKatOKC during interview sessions at Casa del Mar in Santa Monica, Calif. “Then, the draft that I read for ‘Friends With Benefits’ was PG-13 and dated, and I thought, ‘I don’t see the purpose of this film.’ It was neither here nor there, and the producers were like, ‘Why don’t you meet with Will Gluck and maybe he will do a rewrite.’” Gluck, who directed 2010’s surprise hit “Easy A” with Emma Stone, is known for rapid-fire jokes and capturing the chemistry between actors, and to his mind, the script by Keith Merryman and David A. Newman had a good structure. All it needed was a good punch-up, and he wanted to involve Kunis and Timberlake in the process. “I got Justin and Mila attached with the caveat that we would rewrite and we would do everything together,” Gluck said. “So I met with Will, and we had dinner with Justin and we talked about his plan,” Kunis said. “The reason I eventually wanted to do this was because I was given a voice and allowed to do what I thought was funny. Her new strategy paid off with “Sarah Marshall,” which led to well-received roles in “Extract” and “Black Swan.”
It seemed like the right way to do a comedy, so I was excited to be part of that process.” In “Friends With Benefits,” Kunis plays Jamie, a New York City corporate headhunter who recruits new media wunderkind Dylan (Timberlake) to become the new online editor at GQ. Dylan relocates from Los Angeles to New York City, where he and Jamie continue their friendship and, considering their recent romantic disasters, decide that sex without obligation might be their best option. Without the baggage associated with romantic entanglement, Jamie and Dylan get to know each other as friends — possibly in a deeper way than they would if they were romantically involved. Although she first found the spotlight as Jackie Burkhart on “That ‘70s Show” and for her voice work as Meg Griffin on “Family Guy,” the post-“Sarah Marshall” phase of Kunis’ career brought a new level of attention, especially after her role as Lily in “Black Swan.” She went through an unconventional process to get the part in director Darren Aronofsky’s edgy re-
interpretation of “Swan Lake,” and it mainly involved bandwidth. “Strangest process I ever went through, I’ll tell you this,” Kunis said during a one-on-one interview at the W Hotel in Hollywood in November 2010. “I got a phone call that Darren wanted to meet me, and I was like, ‘OK — of course.’ But he was in New York, I was in L.A.; we couldn’t find the time. So I was like, ‘Well, we can try a Skype meeting.’ ” Aronofsky had seen Kunis in “Sarah Marshall,” the Judd Apatow-produced 2008 comedy that proved the 27-year-old actress could hold her own on the big screen. Kunis started chatting online with the director of “The Wrestler” and “Requiem for a Dream,” but she had no idea where it was going. “I think he was getting a feel for who I was and what I wanted — I don’t know,” Kunis said, relaxing with her hair up after a news conference for “Black Swan.” “So he goes, ‘I’m doing this movie called “Black Swan.” Read it and let me know — and also, Natalie is in it.’ ”
Kunis and Natalie Portman had been friends for years but never worked together. They were more likely to go antique shopping on a weekend than share screen time. The idea of exchanging lines with one of her best friends intrigued Kunis, so she read the script and prepared to audition for the role of Lily, the ingenue ballerina whose skill, grace and ambition present a perceived threat to Portman’s prima ballerina, Nina Sayers. But Aronofsky already knew whom he wanted. “Two weeks later we’re on iChat, and he goes, ‘So, are you ready to do this?’ and I was like, ‘Do what, do a video chat?’ And he goes, ‘No, are you ready to do the movie?’” Kunis said. “I was dying — I’d never met him at this point.” As soon as the deal was in place, Kunis told Aronofsky that she needed to begin training immediately. The next day, she was learning plies and pirouettes and starting a 1,200 calorie-per-day diet. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 2 5

And yet, still no Aronofsky. “I trained with Alexandra Blacker for a month before I met him in person,” Kunis said, laughing. “I cannot imagine how common it is.” But the unconventional audition paid off for Kunis, who was born Milena Markovna Kunis in the Ukraine and emigrated to the U.S. with her parents when she was 7 years old. To portray a character who often appears as part of a hallucination — when and where Lily is real is often left to the viewer — Kunis worked to play each scene in multiple ways, allowing Aronofsky to sculpt his ideal vision of “Black Swan” during the editing process. Kunis said that despite their friendship, she and Portman spent little time together during filming. To preserve the complex, competitive relationship between Lily and Nina, Aronofsky asked his leads to stay in their corners and keep their distance. She said it only intensified the performances. “Nat and I played off each other all the time: If she was very sweet, then I would be a little harsher,” Kunis said. “And Darren gave me great notes.” Kunis was discovered by her current agent when she was a student at the Beverly Hills Studios, and she won her first audition at age 10: a 1994 commercial for Glitter Hair Barbie. At 13, she played the younger version of Angelina Jolie’s character in the HBO film “Gia,” and one year later, Kunis lied about her age to audition for “That ‘70s Show,” and spent the next eight years playing Jackie Burkhart on the series. Through her early 20s, while she was on break from “That ‘70s Show,” Kunis did several films that went straight to DVD such as “American Psycho II: All
American Girl,” but she said that her attitude toward roles changed about five years ago, and she started to be more demanding of herself. “I’m much pickier than my position allows me to be, from the age of 22 on,” she said. “I didn’t take the things that were offered. I wanted to fight for things that people were like, ‘You might not be able to get this.’ I was like, ‘I’m going to go and do everything I can and either prove myself wrong or you wrong, and we’ll see what happens.’ ” Her new strategy paid off with “Sarah Marshall,” which led to well-received roles in “Extract” and “The Book of Eli.” She continues to voice Meg Griffin on Fox’s “Family Guy” — a homely animated role that stands in polar contrast to Kunis’ physical presence — which she said is just part of her continuing challenge. “They’re all curveballs for myself,” Kunis said. “I love to see what I can and cannot do. I want to do different things. It’s the beauty of what I do. So if a part comes along that wants me to be a ballet dancer en pointe in three months, I will work my ass off to do it. “Now, I feel like I had a whole life as a ballerina,” she said of her five-month transformation for “Black Swan.” “What I do is so absurd — it’s not brain surgery, I’m not curing cancer. But I can have an amazing life.” While post-“Swan” accolades and the key role as Theodora in Sam Raimi’s upcoming “Oz: The Great and Powerful” were definite positives, her status as a gossip-blog object is harder to accept for the actress. Some of the attention is completely appreciated, such as when Kunis accepted a YouTube invitation to attend the Marine Corps Ball in Greenville, N.C. with Sgt. Scott Moore, who is currently stationed in Afghanistan.
But in the current cover story for the Los Angelesbased style magazine L.A. Confidential, Kunis said much of the attention she receives for just walking out in public creates undue pressure, especially after the success of “Black Swan.” “I’ve never dealt with it on a level like in the last few months,” she told the magazine. “It makes you become a hermit, because normal activities — like picking up laundry or sneezing — suddenly [make you] self-conscious. I love the Internet, but it’s taken away all sense of illusion. If you leave the house, you’re screwed, and if you don’t leave you’re screwed.” But with ‘Friends With Benefits,” Kunis saw an opportunity to change the conversation a little by emphasizing her comedic gifts and finding a new way to look at romantic comedy. “From the beginning, I saw this as a ‘two-hander’ and not as a romantic comedy — I saw it as two people doing something that is funny,” Kunis said. “That is not to discredit the actors in them [traditional rom-coms], but they have boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy breaks up with girl and, at the end, boy realizes he loves girl. There is very little substance, and that story has been told and will be told forever. “It’s not to say our story is different, but he (director Gluck) went about it differently. The way we get from point A to point Z is a little more fun and more modern and a little more creative. I never wanted to play a victim in a film, and I never wanted to play the girl that needed the guy, so I thought this was the right vehicle for that.” It seemed like the right way to do a comedy, so I was excited to be part of that process.”

From the minds behind Big Truck Tacos comes this new concept, ‘amazing’ hot dogs
B
ig Truck Tacos has gone to the dogs — and that’s a good thing. Mutts Amazing Hot Dogs, 1400 NW 23, is the answer to the question partners Kathryn Mathis, Cally Johnson and Chris Lower have been asked most in the short time it took their gourmet taco stand to become a master of the universe: When are you going to open another Big Truck Tacos? Lower told me sometime ago the group would definitely expand, but it might not necessarily be a taco concept. “We were very leery about opening another Big Truck,” Lower said. “We were concerned what makes Big Truck special couldn’t be replicated by simply opening another store.” What’s special about Big Truck can’t be defined, but the expansion, retail store and more than 18,000 Facebook friends are evidence that special it is. While at the National Restaurant Association Association’ss food show in Chicago last year, the Big Truck trio traipsed to the iconic hot doggery, ry, Hot Doug’s, known far and wide for its gourmet interpretations of Chicago’ss favorite street food. Lower said they were just going for lunch, but at that point, they were in hot pursuit of a new concept to tackle. “Not long after we sat down and started eating, we looked at each other and said, ‘We could do this,’” Lower said. “It really fit in with what we wanted to do, which is to celebrate great American street food,” Johnson said.. Johnson and Mathis celebrate street et food by applying their considerable chef’s skills and vast imaginations to createe new interpretations without losing the integrity of the original. Some call it artsy-fartsy tacos and hot dogs; I call it inspired and delicious. And the lines tend to indicate I’m in the majority, at least on this one. SEE STORY ON PAGE 29

So the chefs adoringly known as the Taco Twins don’t feel they have to add Wiener Witches, Frank Fillies or Coney Queens to their aliases; they’ve hired Rachel Wojciak as general manager and sous chef Amie Gehlert to run their new dog show. Gehlert, who is a native of Ponca City, migrated north like so many young chefs, last working in Minneapolis. “I’m having a great time with it,” Gehlert said. “It’s good to be home and great to be involved in something this exciting.” The menu consists of more than 25 hot dog varieties, plus a build-yourown option. “Right now, we’re not doing substitutions on our specialty dogs, because there’s not a lot of carryover of ingredients from dog to dog,” Johnson said. “And we don’t start cooking the dog until it’s ordered, so if we ask the kitchen to start making a lot changes it’s going to really slow things down. If people want to make a lot of changes, we point them toward the build-yourown option.” Of the nearly 30 varieties, I’ve eaten or at least sampled 19 and haven’t found one I wouldn’t order again. In conceiving the menu, Johnson and Mathis did a beautiful job of not only creating a dog for every flavor profile but also paying homage to a wide variety of cultures. “We look at this as our opportunity to affect local culture,” Johnson said. Not only aesthetically but socially. Mathis explained communal tables at

Big Truck weren’t put in out of necessity rather than design but the result was one of many shards of serendipity reflecting the story of their success. “We had these poles in the middle of the dining room, so Chris had the idea of putting communal tables around them,” she said. “What happened was people had to start talking to each other. Pretty soon, the people who came here a lot started helping out the new people and making friends.”

So, the team decided to include two even larger communal tables at Mutts. At those tables and in the booths and smaller tables that surround them, you’ll usually find a lot of customers. And in front of them, you’ll find franks made of Kobe beef, rabbit, duck, lamb, bison, wild boar and even falafel. tzatziki and feta, truffle aioli, crawfish, walnut-arugula pesto, avocados, pinto beans, chili, practically every imaginable pepper and fried or scrambled eggs. Dog prices start at $3 and range up to $9. The plan is to add some homecranked sausages in the future. Corn dogs come in large or mini pups, and the fried bologna sandwich, called a Fried Frisbee, is definitely worth a whirl. The fries, which are sized to share, can be fried in duck fat and drizzled in truffle oil if you please. If deep-fried sides don’t appeal to you, Mutts offers deviled eggs, red-skinned potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw and chili bowls that come in meated and unmeated. The fried pickles are whole spears battered in corn meal and served with a pink sauce you’ll be dipping your thumb in after the pickles disappear. Will Mutts Amazing Hot Dogs stop you from returning to your favorite hot dog stand, whether it be Iggy’s in Edmond, Coney Island or Coit’s? No. But it will make you ponder what other sacred cows, or pigs, might need a makeover from the Taco Twins or some other ambitious and creative chef. You might even feel compelled to talk about your developing culinary postmodernist philosophy with a stranger across the table, which could lead to a new friendship — or even a partnership that results in a gourmet doughnut trailer. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

Summer shades RE F LECT ON TH E PAST Heat Heat He athe h r Wa Warl rlic ick ck Mo Moor ore | Mo Mood Mood od Pub ubliicati ca attiion n Edi d tto or Shades are a must for summer. They protect your eyes by blocking harmful UV rays and even help protect against wrinkles by keeping you from squinting in the bright sun. Sunglasses vary wildly in price, style and quality but there are a few things you should look for while choosing your shades. Fit, feel and finish. And don’t forget about style. Today’s sunglass styles are reminiscent of decades gone by, said Ryan Bowling, partner at Black Optical, a sunglass and optical glass boutique in Classen Curve. “I think over the last few years we’ve seen the midcentury, kind of the ’40s, the ’50s and the ’60s make a strong comeback,” Bowling said. Take iconic Oliver goldsmith frame designed in 1960 with it’s bold almost cat-eye form, available at Black Optical. “Here we are more than 50 years later and it’s still a beautiful pair of sunglasses. And still appeals to our modern aesthetic,” Bowling said. And don’t count out the disco-era’s influence. Oversized, colorful frames are the hallmark of the ’70s resurgence in today’s shades. In fact, color is a big trend this season. Blue is especially hot, which is a perfect fit for Oklahoma’s Thunder fever. Bowling said that even the ’90s are coming back in smaller round frames that were hot early in that decade. “So the nineties are back which is really exciting. It sounds funny to say, of course,” he said. For this feature on sunglasses, we found irresistible styles at Black Optical, Optique Vision Center, 1482 S Bryant in Edmond, Sunglass Hut (multiple locations in Oklahoma) and Blue Seven, 7518 N May, suite A. TO POL A RIZ E OR NOT? Good question. About a decade ago, polarized sunglasses were all the rage. Polarized glasses have a filter that eliminates glare and makes colors and objects more vivid. These days, most mobile devices also contain polarizing filters, which compete with polarized sunglasses and can make it difficult to see the display on your mobile devices, said Ryan Bowling of Black Optical.
Toms has a new line of sunglasses. For each pair sold, a pair of optical glasses will be donated by Toms to a person in need. Sold at Blue Seven. All clothing from Marcy & Abbey’s.
Sunglass wearers “still want to block the sun, but instead of having more definition in the clouds, they’d rather have a clear view of their mobile devices,” he said. Windows on most airplanes also contain similar filters which, when crossed with polarized sunglasses create a rainbow visual effect. But for active sportswear, polarized shades can help reduce glare and improve your game. CEYLON by Barton Perreira. Sold at Black Optical.

SUNGL ASSE S AS H A IR ACCE SSORIE S We all do it. Push our sunglasses on top of our heads when we’re not wearing them. Bad idea, said Ryan Bowling of Black Optical. “We’re all about personal style, so if you like your sunglasses or eyeglasses to double as a head band, more power to you. We certainly prefer that they find another home.” If you must have your sunglasses at the ready, hang them from your shirt collar. But Bowling prefers that your sunglasses find their way into their case when not in use.

“But the case is so large it barely fits in my handbag,” I can hear you thinking. Black Optical is working on a solution that would protect the lenses with a small cover but would be less bulky than most sunglass cases.

POWERED BY
GE NDE R NEUTRAL SH ADE S While most sunglasses are marketed as either men’s or women’s styles, Bowling said you should throw preconceived notions of shade gender out the window. If a style looks good, fits well and you love it, who cares if it’s marketed as a men’s style. “Personally, I think that women can wear absolutely anything if it fits ... bridge size, temple size, those are critical for making sure they feel good in the glass. But oftentimes, a more masculine frame on a woman accentuates her femininity,” Bowling said.

“FAITHFUL” by Barton Perreira. Sold at Black Optical.
THE PE RF ECT M ATCH Legend has it that Patty Perreira, one of the owners of Barton Perreira, wanted to create a pair of shades to match her favorite lipstick color. “She was so particular about the color being a perfect match, she actually went though a different manufacturing process in the acetate so that it would hold the color better,” Bowling said. Thus was born the color “Starstruck” for the Faithful style by Barton Perreira. MARSEILLE by Dita Eyewear. Sold at Black Optical.
