24 YEARS FOR MURDERER A CHAPELTOWN man who stabbed his neighbour and then claimed he had disturbed an intruder has been found guilty of murder and jailed for life with a minimum term of 24 years.

Michael Andrew Goddard, 51, of Steven Close, Chapeltown was convicted of the murder of Glenn Boardman following a nine-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday. He was subsequently sentenced on Friday. In the early hours of Tuesday June 26, Goddard made a 999 call to police saying he had heard his neighbour, 60-yearold Mr Boardman, shouting and sounding distressed.

He went on to tell police he had gone downstairs to Mr Boardman’s first floor flat and found him lying unresponsive on the

floor, as T/Detective Chief Inspector Simon Palmer, the Senior Investigating Officer, explains.

“In the call to police, Goddard said he had seen an unknown man trying to leave the property via an open window. “He went on to describe what he had been wearing and said that he had tried to grab the man, who he said had been carrying a knife, and had received a slash wound to his hand in the process as the ‘suspect’ escaped. “Officers were immediately deployed to the cul-de-sac where both Goddard and Mr Boardman lived and found Mr Boardman on his bedroom floor, with significant knife injuries to his neck and stab wounds to his back.

“Goddard, who was bleeding from his injuries, spoke to officers at the scene and it quickly became apparent that his account had changed and was significantly different to his initial 999 call.” As detectives and specialist forensic officers carried out detailed enquiries at the scene, a trail of blood was found, leading from Mr Boardman’s flat to the surrounding roads which subsequently followed a circular route before ending back at Steven Close. T/DCI Palmer continued: “The day after Mr Boardman’s body was discovered, the trail of blood, which was forensically identified as being God-

POLICE SEARCH FOR DRIVER OVER SCHOOL INCIDENTS POLICE are investigating dangerous driving near a north Sheffield primary school after receving complaints from parents. Whilst undertaking the Junior Road Safety Officer project with children from Ecclesfield Primary School, parents voiced their anger at officers regarding a white Mercedes car that was witnessed to drive at speed down Monteney Road, failing to stop at the zebra crossing whilst a parent and child were on the crossing in the road. This occurred on Tuesday December 11. A further complaint has been made regarding a white Mercedes car after the male driver was verbally abusive towards Civil Traffic Enforcement Officers who were doing their job in company with the JRSOs. This occurred on Wednesday December 12.

Collision on Woodhead Pass kills two TWO people have died, and three were injured following a collision on the Woodhead Pass. At 1.30pm on Saturday December 15, police were called to the A628, Woodhead Pass, Barnsley following reports of a collision between a white Fiat 500 and a blue Mini Cooper. Two women, aged 20 and 22, travelling in the Fiat 500, one of who was the driver, sadly died in the collision. A further passenger in the Fiat 500, a woman, suffered serious injuries.

THE team at Zorro Lounge cafÊ bar at Fox Valley have helped boost a local charity’s funds in their first two months of trading. The restaurant opened in October and soon after launching the Zorro Lounge team pledged to donate a portion of the profits from the sale of coffee and burgers to the Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre - raising a fantastic £1,208.80 for the charity.

The charity cheque was handed over to the team from the Leisure Centre at a special presentation. The funds will be spent helping to pay for the installation of new steps into the main swimming pool at the centre. Leisure Centre manager Andy Clarke said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to the team from Zorro Lounge who chose our lovely community leisure centre to benefit from this great initiative in their first months of trading.

“The money they have donated with really help to significantly improve access for many people, especially those with balance and strength issues who struggle to enter our pool with the step ladder we currently have fitted. Kayleigh Marron, from the Fox Valley team, said: “Zorro Lounge is a great addition here at Fox Valley and it’s fantastic that the team have made this donation to a fantastic local cause to mark their first months of trading.

CHAPELTOWN KILLER JAILED Dig for Roman artefacts Continued from front page Evidence was put to Goddard, to which he replied no comment to in four separate interviews. He was charged with murder two days later and has been remanded ahead of his trial since. “Mr Boardman was a man with significant health complications and he had received support from carers on a daily basis since the middle of 2017,” added T/ DCI Palmer. “As neighbours and friends, he and Goddard spent a lot of time together and Mr Boardman trusted Goddard to come and go from his flat most days.

Glenn Boardman dard’s, was found to go through Chapeltown centre to woodland and was estimated to be around three-miles long. “CCTV recovered showed Goddard walking along this route over an hour before he rang the emergency services, making the claims regarding the intruder. “A blood-strained jacket was also found nearby, hidden in some bushes. It was forensically tested and found to have been worn by Goddard, with the blood confirmed as belonging to both Mr Boardman and Goddard.”

“Goddard took advantage of that trust, stealing from him for over a number of months, before violently attacking Mr Boardman and killing him, for reasons we may never truly understand, and the denial of his guilt meant that Mr Boardman’s family and friends have had to endure a trial. I’m pleased that he has today been found guilty of murder and my thoughts are with his friends and family.” Mr Boardman’s family said “We have got justice for Glenn and whilst we know this will not bring him back it is comforting to know that Michael Goddard’s liberty has been taken from him too.

“We would like to thank the QC, CPS, the Police, the Family Liaison Officers and others that have helped us through this very difficult and traumatic time, they have all been amazing, giving us the support and help that we needed as well as working hard on the case. Once again we would like to say a big thank you for all they have done and are still doing. Whilst we can’t measure the scale of our loss we can seek comfort in knowing that Glenn’s life was seen to be important. “Glenn was a loving and caring person to his family and close friends and would have done anything for anybody if he could. He will be deeply missed.” T/Detective Chief Inspector Simon Palmer concluded: “I am pleased that the jury saw Goddard for the man he is, someone who preyed on Glenn Boardman, a vulnerable and trusting man who thought that Goddard was his friend. “I hope today’s sentence gives some comfort to Mr Boardman’s family who may now start to move on from this tragedy. My thanks go out to the team of officers who have worked tirelessly to secure justice for Glenn and his family.”

RECENTLY a small excavation was been carried out in Roughbirchworth by a local group interested in archaeology to try to establish if the Romans had a camp near to the Iron-age one, which is marked on old maps and can still be seen on the ground. The Romans often reused these locations and also may have wanted to protect the main

Lots of useful information surfaced from folks aerial photos, old maps and fascinating stories. The group hopes to undertake a larger archaeological excavation next year to try to unravel some of these mysteries.

PRAISE FOR ACADEMY CHRISTMAS SHOW SUSPECTED THE Chair of Ecclesfield Parish Council, Cllr Garry Weatherall, was invited to attend Chapeltown Amateur Operatic Society Children's Academy Christmas show at The Venue in Stocksbridge recently.

ROBBERY IN BURNCROSS

Cllr Weatherall said: “It was an absolute pleasure to be invited to this event. The children put on a cracking show and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would like to give a big thank you to Julia, Tony, Sophie and Rita and all the Children who were involved in the show.

OFFICERS in Sheffield are appealing for information following the reported robbery of a 52-year-old woman in the Burncross area.

“I would also like to wish Chapeltown Amateur Operatic Society a very merry Christmas and happy New Year from all at Ecclesfield Parish Council.”

At around 8.45pm on Sunday December 9, it was reported that the woman was walking home from the Acorn pub on Hollow Gate when she was pushed from behind. She fell forward onto her face and sustained minor facial injuries.

Members and staff of Ecclesfield Parish Council would like to wish all residents of the parish a merry Christmas and happy New Year.

The victim believes that two men were involved, one of the men held her down as the other took items from her before leaving the scene and running towards the Bridge Inn pub.

Ecclesfield Parish Council would like to offer their thanks to anyone that kindly donated a gift to the Hallam FM Mission Christmas. Clerk to the Council, Tara Ball, said “This is the first year the Parish have acted as a collection point for this fantastic cause and it has been a great success.

A diamond ring, titanium ring, Samsung mobile phone and a Tag Heuer 2000 stainless steel strap watch were taken. The watch, which has sentimental value to the victim, has a broken clasp.

“Hallam FM are aiming to deliver to over 25,000 children across South Yorkshire your donated gifts and due to your generosity, a child that could have been at risk of not receiving a gift will now wake up to one on Christmas Day.”

An investigation is underway including reviewing CCTV and officers are carrying out local enquiries. Were you in the area at the time? Did you witness the robbery?

All donations have now been dropped off at Hallam FM, but if any further gifts are handed in then they will be dropped off in the New Year and passed onto children’s homes or kept in storage for next year.

Have you been offered any of these items? Please call 101 quoting incident number 869 of 9 December 2018. You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Council offices will be closed from Monday December 24 until Tuesday January 2.

COUNCIL REACHES ‘JOINT POSITION’ WITH TREE ACTION GROUP AND AMEY FOLLOWING further talks between Sheffield City Council, Amey and representatives from Sheffield Trees Action Group (STAG), a joint position has now been reached on aspects of a new proposal for managing the city’s street trees. During the talks, the Council and Amey put forward a proposal that will result in fewer trees being removed and replanted, and for those trees that do still need to be removed, phasing this process over a much longer time period.

“This issue has been ongoing for a number of years and we are under no illusions that it can be resolved overnight. However, I am hopeful that this plan is the first step towards working together with the overwhelming number of people and organisations across the city that have a passion and wealth of expertise to protect and enhance the proud green landscape that Sheffield is famous for.

“Our publication of these plans and our joint position statement with the STAG Steering Group is a step in the right direction and should be welcomed by all those who want to see this issue resolved and our city move forward together.” The new programme will roll out during the early part of next year and local residents will be given the opportunity to have their say

In addition, the two sides have acknowledged the need for a new street tree strategy, to be developed during the first part of 2019 with a wide range of stakeholders, and with the support of an independent chair, which will be used to inform the remaining period of the Streets Ahead programme. They have also jointly acknowledged that healthy street trees should only be replaced if no other practical solution can be found, and, ultimately, that work to improve the city’s highways is welcome and, moreover, needed. Furthermore, the Council and Amey have confirmed to the STAG steering group that there is no target in the Streets Ahead contract for the removal of street trees.

R OUR OUR OUR OUR OUR OUR BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER R OUR BEST EVER In coming weeks, detailed inspections will start on the dozens of street trees previously identified for replacement, with a view to retaining as many as possible.

E E BED BED BED BED BED BED SALE SALE SALE SALE SALE SALE BED SALE The findings of these inspections will be shared with residents of affected streets, stakeholders and tree campaigners to ensure that anyone who is interested can have their say and is kept informed of progress.

The greatest benefit of this new approach will be seen on roads where a high percentage of trees were set to be replaced and the impact of replacing mature trees with new, young trees will be minimised.

The extra costs associated with retaining or phasing trees will be met in full by the council’s contractor, Amey, and there will be no additional cost to the Sheffield taxpayer. This also means that delayed resurfacing work on affected roads and footpaths will now go ahead in 2019.

Sheffield City council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene, Councillor Lewis Dagnall said: “I’ve been in my position for just over six months, in which time I have been listening carefully to the range of views on how we can move forward.

“Having met with local groups of residents, key stakeholders and interested parties, I have been overwhelmed by the desire, on all sides, to see this issue resolved. There is a real appetite to come together to achieve the compromise we have been looking for, and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this process.

BARNSLEY Museums and Barnsley College have been working in collaboration on a project that celebrates women in art. Using The Cooper Gallery’s latest exhibition ‘Artists and Adventurers; Women Who Dared to Create’, which brings together paintings, ceramics, and glass by great women artists, as inspiration, a group of college students aged between 16 and 18 were tasked to create their own masterpiece.

MARY POPPINS (PG)

By looking at women’s role as artists both today and in the past, the students used the topic to develop their own research into female artists and then create a final piece of art work along the same theme.

RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET (PG)

Eleven of the final pieces were chosen for display at Cannon Hall Museum where they can be seen throughout December. They will be placed amongst the works, which make up the Cracking Ceramics! exhibition.

Beryl Brooke Wishes all her friends and neighbours in Hillcrest Rise a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and best wishes to BMVC. Thank you to friends and family, Belmont Nursing Home staff & patients. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. From John & Gwen Palmer

Saturday saw a great turnout of Angram Bank High Green kids at the youth club’s Christmas party. An absolute privilege to have been invited. I would like to express my admiration to all volunteers for all your great efforts this year, in ensuring this amazing community asset continues. Terry Bawden (Tez) you and your team are true pillars of our community, thank you.

The event was organised by High Green in Bloom who, like many of our wonderful voluntary groups in the City, deserve praise for what they do throughout the year. They planted the Christmas tree, so it is larger than last year, and the lights are paid for out of grants from Ecclesfield Parish Council and from other kind donations. Special thanks also to the Parish Chair, Dave Cooper, for organising it all. The electrician is my good friend and though he wouldn’t appreciate it if I mentioned him by name, I want him to know I am very grateful for his help. Big thanks to everyone for helping to make our area that little bit more festive. Merry Christmas! Cllr Andy Bainbridge – Labour Councillor for East Ecclesfield

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

THE HUB CHURCH MILLIONS PLAN TO CHRISTMAS SERVICE GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME THIS CHRISTMAS

MILLIONS of us are planning to give the gift of our time this festive period by volunteering to help others.

New research from national volunteering charity, Royal Voluntary Service, finds nearly one in five (17%) adults in Great Britain plan to volunteer over the Christmas period, with 14% intending to volunteer on Christmas Day itself*.

AT the Hub Church, we love celebrating Christmas and so this Sunday, December 23, we have our Christmas service at 4pm. This will include festive carols, an inspirational talk, Christmas fun for all the family and not forgetting some mulled wine and mince pies. This is open for anyone to come and join in the Christmas celebrations. We look forward to seeing you there.

CHURCH SERVICE LIKE NO OTHER Our next service to help you end the year with a bang will take place on Sunday December 30 at 10.30am. This will include great music from the Hub Band and Pastor Dave will also share an inspirational message to get you ready for 2019. In this talk, Pastor Dave will share five keys to help simplify your life in 2019. He explains: “Life can be so complex and we need to find ways to help simplify our lives so that we can enjoy

our time with family and friends in the year ahead, these five keys will help you do that.” Even if you have never been to church before we would love you to come and check it out and get yourself ready for 2019. For any more info, you can email us at info@thehubchurch.org MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE HUB CHURCH

Of those who plan to volunteer, nearly three quarters (74%) intend to donate at least three hours of their time during the festivities and just over one in 10 (11%) will gift more than 10 hours. The research also explored people’s thoughts around present giving at Christmas and reveals the selfless nature of our nation - 54% of respondents say the gift of time to help others is the most valuable gift you can give and nearly half (49%) believe more people should consider gifting their time to help others, rather than just spending on gifts. Two fifths (40%) also say they would prefer someone to donate their money or time to a good cause at Christmas rather than spending it on them.

On the back of the study, Royal Voluntary Service is hoping to inspire people to extend their goodwill by encouraging them to volunteer a few hours each week or month, throughout the year. Specifically, the charity wants to harness the public’s giving spirit to support its work with the NHS and those in later life, citing the huge difference just a few hours can make to someone’s life. Rebecca Kennelly, Director of Volunteering for Royal Voluntary Service, said: “Christmas can bring out our altruistic side, and volunteering is one of the most generous gifts you can give. It offers enormous value for the person making the gift, and to those receiving it: it changes lives, changes communities and changes society. It is wonderful to see so many people plan to volunteer this Christmas, and we’d welcome more of this generosity throughout the year. The sense of purpose and joy that can be derived from volunteering and supporting others is incomparable. “Whether it’s providing an older person with company at home or running a gentle exercise

class on a hospital ward, our volunteers make a tangible difference to so many people, with millions of small acts of kindness. We would love to welcome more volunteers into our family in 2019.” Royal Voluntary Service is one of Britain’s largest volunteering charities with over 20,000 volunteers supporting thousands of people each month in hospitals and in the community. The simple acts of kindness our volunteers provide, whether popping in for tea and a chat, helping out with a lift to a GP or social appointment or running chair-based exercises on ward, help make communities stronger and relieve the pressure on overstretched public services. The charity is also one of the largest retailers in the NHS, with its network of cafes and shops providing a valued haven in hospitals. For more information about volunteering with Royal Voluntary Service in 2019, to find social activities in your area or to donate to support our work visit royalvoluntaryservice.org. uk

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our loyal customers. Thank you for your custom throughout 2018, and all good wishes for 2019

PLAN BEFORE YOU TRAVEL DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON IN SHEFFIELD WITH the countdown for Christmas underway, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is reminding customers to plan ahead for the festive period travel in Sheffield by checking timetables and services on travelsouthyorkshire.com/christmas.

“On Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Saturday 29 December, buses, trams and tram trains will operate a Saturday service, with a few exceptions. Trains will start later than usually but will operate to a normal timetable from then onwards. On Sunday 30 December, they’ll operate a Sunday Service.

From Tuesday 25 December until Tuesday 1 January, holders of SYPTE-issued English National Concessionary Travel Scheme Senior Passes can travel for free on bus and tram, and for half fare on Northern Rail services within South Yorkshire, from the start to end of service.

“On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, most bus, tram and tram-train services will follow Saturday timetables. Rail services will run as normal and all public transport should finish early, with last departures from around 6pm, and 7pm for trains”, says SYPTE’s Director of Customer Services Tim Taylor, “as usual, there will be no bus, tram, tram train or train services on Christmas Day.”

On New Year’s Day, First will run a special bus service funded by Sheffield City Council between 8am and 6:30pm. Trams and Tram trains will also operate a special service between 8:30am and 6:30pm, with free parking at Park and Ride sites and trains will operate normally after a late start.

Customers can register with Travel South Yorkshire to receive a free email alert whenever there are changes to the public transport services that are important to them at travelsouthyorkshire. com/gettimetables.

On Boxing Day, First, Stagecoach and TM Travel will run special bus services between 7am and 6:30pm, funded by Buses for Sheffield. Trams will also operate a special service between 6am and 9pm, which includes free parking at Park and Ride sites, but there will be no train or tram-train services.

Trains, trams and tram trains will resume normal service on Wednesday 2 January, but buses will still run a Saturday timetable with some exceptions, until Friday 4 (inclusive). Trains are expected to be busier than usual and customers are encouraged to check with National Rail or their operating company for any planned engineering works or local service updates.

Travel South Yorkshire Interchanges and Park and Ride sites opening hours during the festive period can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com/christmas, as well as revised timetables, last departures and journey planning. Live travel information will be available via Twitter @TSYalerts or Traveline 01709 51 51 51, except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, when Traveline will be closed.

KEITH HACKETT JOINS CHURCH FORMER Premier League Referee Keith Hackett has become a regular at NCEL Premier Division side Penistone Church over the past few years – and now he has been made President of the club.

WITH difficult weather for the past two weekends there has been little competitive golf to note at Stocksbridge and District Golf Club. A small field of nine took part in the fifth round of the Winter Cup on December 8. S. Marsh triumphed with a creditable 36 points and second place was taken by N. Elliott with 28 points. On December 15, with the weather even more unfavourable, E. Smith won the Pro’s Prize with 34 points and J. Moss was second with 28 points. The club president, chairman and board of directors wish to thank all the club staff and members for making Stocksbridge one of the friendliest courses to play in Yorkshire. On behalf of the Golf Club, we wish all Look Local readers a merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

He replaces Gordon Beever who has stepped down since taking charge for the entire time that Church have been in the NCEL league.

For those looking for a new challenge, why not come up to the club and find out more about the opportunities available at the club.

Hackett has officiated at a number of key matches down the years, including World Cup games and the 1982 FA Cup Final.

For further information contact the club secretary on 0114 2882003, or Roger Broad, the club professional, on 0114 2882779.

Pigs show improvement in unlucky defeat STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby slumped to their third defeat in a row and crashed out of the play off places after a disappointing 16-10 defeat away at Hessle. Bradfield Brewery sponsored Stocksbridge welcomed back second row talisman Sam Whitaker after injury, but the squad is still threadbare due to injuries and other commitments. Despite the blustery conditions the pitch was in good order and the home team started stronger

with their hefty units challenging the hesitant Stocksbridge defence. Stocksbridge gradually worked themselves into the game, Bowskill’s line kicking gaining good ground and the forwards with Whitaker and Woodcock dominant, showing that they too could rumble with the best. That the game stayed scoreless for over 35minutes is one of the greatest mysteries ever, Stocksbridge had most of the possession only to throw it away with a series of handling blunders, the visitors had

nearly all of the territory, pressing the home team onto their try line for long periods. Only Stocksbridge errors saved Hessle as opportunity after opportunity was missed. First Whitaker grounded the ball only to be ruled held up by an unsighted referee, who then denied Joe Jones a similar score on the other flank. Stocksbridge let Hessle out of jail and some poor kick returns contributed to the visitors’ frustrations. The dam had to be breached and from a line

out, the Stocksbridge forwards drove Hessle back to their line where the hard working Whitaker was not to be denied and he plunged over for the opening score, Bowskill was unable to convert. Stocksbridge then lost Reece Aspin with a hamstring injury, to be replaced by Liam O’Leary. Hessle’s tactics of continually slowing the ball down and taking time out of the game seemed to be keeping the visitors at bay and a yellow card for persistent infringing was justly given by the referee on the stroke of half time with Stocksbridge unlucky to be only five points ahead. Hessle didn’t read the Stocksbridge half time script and came back strongly in the early stages of the second stanza, poor handling again coughed up possession and the home forwards for once were able to make their size advantage count and scored a close range try, crucially converted by the home kicker. With former PNG Rugby League international Menzie Yere in their ranks, Stocksbridge found it difficult to generate good ball to set the ‘jukebox’ free and when Whitaker and then Joe Smith joined Aspin on the injured list, Stocksbridge Rugby lost some of the advantage in the set piece and loose play. The referee was very lenient with a series of high tackles from the tiring home defence, again awarding a further yellow card, when more appropriate sanctions should have been taken. A loose kick was again mishandled by the Stocksbridge cover and a penalty was conceded which Hessle converted to stretch their lead. Stocksbridge drew level when Liam O’Leary, operating on the back row this week, scored a close range try after further good work from the Stocksbridge pack, again Bowskill failed with the conversion attempt. With the light fading and the plucky visitors running out of players and steam, Hessle were awarded two penalties in quick succession which they duly kicked and went on to win the game 16-10 and just a solitary losing bonus point to show for their Trojan efforts. A massive disappointment to all the travelling Piggies and further frustration to the players however, as man of the match Sam Whitaker said: “It feels good to be back and there is a good buzz within the team.” Stocksbridge Director of Rugby Andy Tyers said: “I’ve never seen such a one sided game of rugby, with so much possession and territory, end up in a loss. No wonder the lads are disappointed. We are improving and the performances are getting more consistent though.” Sam Whitaker is sponsored by S&M Pipeworks, & Liam O’Leary is sponsored by SAM Business Systems, Stocksbridge Rugby would like to take this opportunity to wish all players, supporters and volunteers, as well as our generous sponsors a very merry Christmas and a successful New Year.
