This community event held for the fifth year running had nine categories covering 72 classes covering fresh produce, floral, domestic produce, handicrafts and textiles, art and sculpture, photography, woodwork, children’s section and a new section

this year for age 12 to 16 year olds. Unfortunately for our vegetable growers the dry summer meant the vegetables were not as prolific as in previous years but there was still an amazing selection with entries being placed in 21 of the 22 classes. Likewise all our other categories had some wonderful entries. The winners of the trophies were:

* Adult – Jane Mettam * Child – Violet Broomhead * School – Windmill Hill Next year’s show will be held on the Saturday September 21 so make a note of the date. The committee of the Forum are already planning some exciting new attractions so do try and give the event your support.

Sports academy teams up with Park Steels BARNSLEY College’s Sports Academy has formed a partnership with Stocksbridge Park Steels Football Club to give talented football players opportunities at both clubs. The new agreement could open doors for College students who are looking to get a foothold in football. Students from the academy will have the opportunity to play showcase games, enjoy a match day experience and coaching sessions from first team staff at Stocksbridge Park Steels. Students will also have the chance to gain relevant experience in match analysis, sports therapy, strength and conditioning, coaching, sports journalism and media opportunities with the highest ranked non-league club in the locality.

Chris Hilton, First Team Manager at Stocksbridge Park Steels FC, said: “We are really pleased to partner with Barnsley College. The partnership will allow us to scout possible players but also to access students who would like to gain relevant experience in the field, enabling us to offer more. The partnership is mutually beneficial to both parties and we are excited and look forward to working together over the coming years.” Luke Forgione, Sports Performance and Athlete Development Coordinator at Barnsley College, added: “These opportunities do not come along often, we are very fortunate that Stocksbridge Park Steels have allowed us to be an official partner and we look forward to a long and mutually-beneficial partnership.

“Our students now have their foot in the door with Stocksbridge Park Steels, they just have to show they are capable of performing at the level required.” Barnsley Sports Academy offers fantastic facilities and a team of expert and specialist coaches supporting talented sports performers in any discipline. Academies include Football (male and female), Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Refereeing and Individual Athlete Academy. For more information about the Barnsley Sports Academy contact Barnsley College on 01226 216 123, email: info@barnsley.ac.uk, visit the website at: www.barnsley.ac.uk/ sport or come along to our Open Evening on Thursday October 18, 6pm to 8pm.

Oughtibridge accident blackspot survey results PEOPLE have responded in droves to the survey organised by local campaigners into the ongoing problems in Oughtibridge by Bridge Hill. Two thousand leaflets were distributed in Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side, and an online survey was shared on many of the community forums. They asked people to choose between the option the council are proposing, to reverse the one-way system on Bridge Hill, a community promoted option to make Bridge Hill a right turn only or a different option.

%06#-& 035)01"&%*$ #&% "/% )&"%#0"3%

The results were emphatic. Out of 755 responses only 6.5% of people thought the council option would work – most voicing concerns about the safety of vehicles leaving the top of Bridge Hill. Visibility is very poor because of a bend in Langsett Road South and the top of Bridge Hill is very steep. The plan to make all traffic turn right received 74.2% of the vote. Of the other 19.3%, over half wanted Bridge Hill closed to through traffic entirely, while some wanted to see traffic lights.

Local resident Terry Barrow, who has worked tirelessly on this issue over a number of years, commented: “There really is no perfect solution. Even if the proposal we put forward was implemented, we still have worries about the position of the crossing in relation to the junction and the very real possibility of congestion on Langsett Road North, Orchard Street and backed up on Station Lane. “But the Community has said very clearly which option it would prefer. We would then want to engage with,

and work with the council in order to address these other issues and to mitigate problems that any scheme they introduce, may cause.” Sheffield City Council has already agreed to undertake local consultation in November. In anticipation of this work, Stocksbridge and Upper Don Labour Party is preparing to submit the detailed results of the completed survey in order to influence the Council’s thinking on the matter.

Anne Phipps added: “This is an issue which affects everyone who uses this busy junction, whether as a driver, passenger, cyclist or pedestrian. All Labour Party members who took part in the distribution of the leaflet are first and foremost local residents, worried like everyone else about the number of accidents that have occurred already and concerned to prevent them in future. We hope that the results of this survey will help inform the Council’s planning and help to identify the best way forward.”

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY Call 0114 283 11 00

www.looklocal.org.uk

HISTORY

From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money.

3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary

The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978, 40 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will bejoining us in a few years time.

WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL?

I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person.

Latest products: Windows and doors

We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. We supply the best quality product fitted by our qualified installation engineers. We also have our own plasterer, brick layers and electrician, all qualified and professional.

a suitable donation to the MacMillan Coffee Morning. If any organisation in Bolsterstone, or any individuals who want to help it to stay in Bolsterstone, want to get in touch with the minister at Christ Church, Rev Ian Lucraft, please email Ian on ianlucraft@btinternet.com.

Local News Last ditch venue switch sees Stocksbridge host national hill climb championship event THE National Hill Climb Championships return to Pea Royd Lane in Stocksbridge on Sunday October 28, with a start time of 11am. Last held on this hill in 2014, the Championship venue having changed just two weeks ago, with Pea Royd being the first choice as replacement. This year’s event is certain to be an absolute classic with the previous four champions all returning to battle for the top spot. Champion in 2014 and 2017 Dan Evans, flies into Manchester airport at 6am on the morning after taking part in a lucrative hill climb event in Taiwan and stops of in Stocksbridge to defend his title before heading home to North Wales. The 2016 Champion (Adam Kenway) and 2015 Champion (Ricard Bussell) will

be pushing for the National jersey. Other riders who will post a challenge include Joe Clark, Andy Nichols, Calum Brown, Ed Laverack and Ryan Kenworthy. Team B38/Underpin Racing are hoping to regain their team award for the 3rd time, already winners in 2016 and 2017. Of the women, on form rider Fiona Burnie faces tough opposition from Joanne Jago, Jessica Evans, Nikki Juniper and last year’s runner up Mary Wilkinson. The 2017 Champion (Joscelin Lowden) has been concentrating on road racing with her new team and as of going to press has not entered. The event closes for entries on 9th October so there may still be time. Both 2017 winning Juniors, George Kimber and Corinne

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

DON’T LET YOUR DOGS GO OFF WITH A BANG ON FIREWORKS NIGHT THE Kennel Club recommends dog owners are prepared in time for fireworks night. • Ensure your pets microchip details are up to date • Acclimatise your dog to noises prior to the big night. There are many noise CDs on the market which give you the opportunity to introduce your dog to a variety of potentially disturbing noises in a controlled manner. • Seek help from an experienced animal behaviourist. If your pet is severely noise phobic, sound CDs may make the situation worse. Kennel Club Accredited Instructors are experienced in different aspects of dog training and behaviour. • Make a safe den for your dog to retreat to if he or she feels scared. Alternatively, let your dog take refuge under furniture and include an old, unwashed piece of clothing like a woolly jumper so that your dog can smell your scent and feel comfortable. • Distract your dog from the noise by having the TV or the radio switched on.

• Try to act and behave as normal, as your dog will pick up on any odd behaviour. Remain calm, happy and cheerful as this will send positive signals to your dog. Reward calm behaviour with dog treats or playing with toys of interest. • Check where and when firework displays are being held in your local area. Also ask your neighbours to let you know if they are planning anything. • Consult your vet if your dog has any health problems or is taking any medication. • Talk to your vet about giving remedies such as Ceva Adaptil to help them cope with fireworks night, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. • Feed your dog a while before you expect any disturbances, as once the fireworks start your dog may be too anxious to eat. • Walk your dog before dusk. It may be some time before it’s safe to venture outside again for your dog to relieve themselves. • Make sure you shut all

re Feature doors and windows in your home and don’t forget to draw the curtains. This will block out any scary flashes of light and reduce the noise level of fireworks. Don’t forget to block off cat flaps to stop dogs (and cats) escaping. • Shut your dog safely inside a room before opening the front door. • Your dog might choose to hide under the bed; if they come to you for comfort, make sure that you give it to them. Ignoring your dog would only make things worse as they wouldn’t understand your withdrawal from them. • Keep a collar and ID tag on your dog, just in case they do accidentally escape. Make sure your dog is microchipped too, as if he or she does escape without a collar on this will ensure you are reunited as quickly as possible and is a legal requirement.

Council united against fracking FOLLOWING information received from the Yorkshire Local Council’s Association, with regard to the Government Shale Gas Exploration and Production Planning Consultations. At the meeting of Ecclesfield Parish Council on Thursday October 4 a unanimous resolution was passed that:“Ecclesfield Parish Council is dismayed at the way the Government has decided to make Shale Gas Exploration a permitted development right. Thus taking any decision out of the hands of the local Councils that represent the communities that may have serious objections to such exploration.” It was agreed that this response be submitted on behalf of the Parish Council and that an article be placed in the Look Local Newspaper informing residents of the Parish Council’s views on Shale Gas Exploration.

FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Stocksbridge PS 0-2 Belper Town and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty. After discussion with Ruthven, Coleman eventually took the penalty, his shot lacked confidence and power and was saved by the away keeper. Belper began to press forward and wherever possible threw long throws into the box for their big , physical players to come onto. The tactic worked to a degree when a free kick was whpped in, Amissah came out and fisted the ball clear but the second ball came straight back at him and it was Paylor who spun from 10 yards out, central to goal, to volley over the stranded Amissah. Wiles found himself with the ball at his feet six yards from goal but shot tamely at the goalkeeper as Steels tried to get back into the

Footpath Runners FOUR of Penistone’s youngest athletes showed maturity beyond their years as they seamlessly took park in their first indoor athletics meeting at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield at the weekend. Two records were broken on the day in the standing high jump by Isobel Wolff and the 1kg shot by Deacon Coldwell. Full results: Boys aged 8 to 10 600m - 9, Deacon Coldwell 2-27. Boys aged 8 to 10 150m - 18, Deacon Coldwell 31.44s. Boys aged 8 to 10 Shot (1kg) - 6, Deacon Coldwell 4.26m (Club Record). Girls aged 8 to 10 600m - 11, Isobel Wolff 2-30. Girls aged 8 to 10 150m - 15, Isobel Wolff 29.07s. Girls aged 8 to 10 Standing High Jum- 13, Isobel Wolff 26cm (Club Record). Girls aged 11 to 13 800m - 18, Leah Finch 3-01; 22, Violet Bettison 3-04. Girls aged 11 to 13 200m - 17, Leah Finch 33.15s; 32, Violet Bettison 37.74s. Girls aged 11 to 13 60m - 28, Leah Finch 10.16s; 39, Violet Bettison 10.96s. Gareth Cooke of Penistone had a successful weekend. On Saturday he completed his 250th parkrun at Barnsley in an equal best time of 16-44. He then followed this up on Sunday with victory at the Burringham 10k where he achieved a personal best time of 33-36. Fellow Penistone runner Kieron Reed finished in 7th with a time of 37-25.

game, but lacked creativity in midfield really, banking on long high balls from defence to attack. The second half got under way and again a scrappy affair ensued with no team looking likely to score. Belper were not sure to stick or twist with a goal to preserve and Steels just struggled to get bodies into the last third to support open play and balls going into the box. On 62 minutes Belper made it 2-0 when a whipped in free kick wide on the right was glanced home from 12 yards. Steels huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a way back until the last 5 minutes when a free Kick and corner sent in caused panic but to no avail as Ruthven and Litchfield failed to connect properly.

PENISTONE Church scored 11 goals this week with a 6-1 defeat of Bridlington Town followed by a 5-2 win over Goole Town. Andy Ring, Sam Scrivens (2), Jordan Coduri, Ash Ellis and Brett Lovell were all on target against Bridlington with Kieran Ryan, Ryan Johnson (2) and Jordan Coduri (2) scoring the goals against Goole. After a run of cup games it was back to the bread and butter of the league for Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies and they maintained their 100% record with a fine 5-1 win at Mansfield. Millie Kenyon opened the scoring on 14 minutes with a powerful run and precise finish and this was quickly followed by a cool lob by former Mansfield player Laura Watton past a stranded keeper. With the breeze behind them the home team pushed hard to get back into the game and got a lifeline on the stroke of half time with an in swinging corner finding its way just over the line. After the break it was one way traffic though with Oughtibridge completely on top and striker Codi Melia ending her frustrating barren spell with a superb 10 minute hat-trick, the only surprise being that they didn’t add to that total, mainly thanks to a solid display by a busy home keeper. This Sunday Oughtibridge host Loughborough Students at the War Memorial with a 2pm kick off. PARK Steels’ young reserve squad travelled to league leaders North Gawber last Saturday and put in a disciplined performance to come away with a point in a 0-0 draw..

Plucky Stocksbridge bow out of Yorkshire Vase BRADFIELD Brewery sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby entertained high flying Harrogate Pythons, sitting fourth in the league above and produced a spirited performance before succumbing to a 5910 defeat at Coal Pit Lane at the weekend. Whilst the cup competition is not high on the priority list for Stocksbridge Rugby, the coaching staff demanded a more enthusiastic and disciplined approach after the previous weeks’ limp offering. A growing injury list is hampering selection currently and with a further four late drop outs, Stocksbridge were forced into starting with a virtual second string forward pack, against a side renowned for their strong forward play. Debutant Jack Ryan, 17, was thrown in at the deep end and did enough to suggest a bright future for the promising youngster. Stocksbridge suffered a further blow during the warm up when second row Jamie Christian pulled out with an ankle injury, to be replaced by veteran Brendan Rowett, father of club captain Ricky.

Stocksbridge 10-59 Harrogate Pythons

The club are grateful to Mr Keith Rintoul for his generous sponsorship of the match ball. For all the adversity, Stocksbridge never took a backward step and the coaching team can take a lot of positives from their performance, well lead by Skipper Rowett. The forwards competed though heavily out gunned and some early possession

provided centres Kelly and Westby room to attack the visiting defence. The home side even took the lead when Bowskill landed a simple penalty after good work from Fletcher, Booth and Bowman up front. Gradually the more experienced and heavier Pythons pack took control and worked their way into the Stocksbridge 20. A succession of clean breaks lead to some early scores and although credit has to be given to the effort put in by the Stocksbridge eight, they were simply outplayed by their ruthless opponents. Some poor defence and a harsh yellow card for winger Jack Spencer also contributed to a half time score of 26-3 to Harrogate Pythons. Although the game had gone by half time, there was still plenty for the home side to play for and Stocksbridge showed a lot of character during a tough second stanza and even scored a consolation try of their own through the hard working Lewis Bowman after some good forward work from Hartley and both Rowetts, putting pressure on the Harrogate pack. Bowskill converted easily and Stocksbridge were unlucky not to score again shortly after as the forwards piled on the pressure and the visitors creaked giving a succession of penalties away, fortunate not to receive a yellow card in the process. Full back Bowskill was replaced by Alan Eckersley as his eye closed following a collision.

As the game wore on the tired Stocksbridge pack began to fall off the tackles and the Pythons raced away into the next round of the Cup. The Man of the Match award went to the hard working Adam Frith sponsored by BM Decorating Services, defiant behind a beaten pack, with young Jack Ryan, Fletcher, Bowman, Hartley and Booth giving performances they could all be proud of. Another heavy defeat, but Coach Andy Tyers was surprisingly upbeat about the performance. “Last week was unacceptable for me. We simply gave in and showed no enthusiasm or intensity. We knew we were going to be under the pump this week, with a higher class of opponent and an increasing injury list hampering our preparation however, we asked the boys to show up for each other and they did. We can accept defeat to a better team, but I cannot accept us not competing and we had a dig this week, showed a bit of pride. These are the attributes we will expect going forward.” Stocksbridge Rugby will have to hope their medical team can cope with the workload this week, so they can produce a squad capable of winning a difficult away clash with promotion rivals Mosborough Rugby at the weekend, as their league campaign resumes.
