HIGH GREEN MONKEY DONATES GUITAR HIGH Green rockers Arctic Monkeys are raising money for The Leadmill in Sheffield and other independent grassroots music venues across the UK, with Alex Turner donating one of his prized guitars. During the early stages of their career, the band performed at numerous small music venues around the country and regularly played at The Leadmill. The impact of Covid-19 has been devastating for all music venues and particularly those independent venues who have provided a stage for countless artists at the very start of their careers. The Leadmill is a Sheffield venue that has played host to an incredible amount of talent over the past four decades including Pulp, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Muse, Oasis, Stone Roses, The White Stripes, Jorja Smith, Michael Kiwanuka as well as Arctic Monkeys. Since closing their doors back in March, The Leadmill has had to work to reschedule or cancel over 120 events. With no clear opening

date on the horizon, the future of this legendary Sheffield venue and the dedicated staff who run it, is now uncertain. In an effort to raise critical funds to help support The Leadmill and numerous other grassroots music venues in the UK, Alex Turner has offered to raffle his black Fender Stratocaster guitar which he used for many of the band’s early performances including shows at The Leadmill and Reading Festival in 2006. Everyone who enters the draw will gain access to an exclusive viewing of the band’s performance at Reading Festival in 2006. Access to view the performance will be invite only and will be shown at 8pm on Wednesday August 26 and will remain available for 24 hours. Everyone who enters the draw will be sent a link two hours before it begins via email. All funds raised will go to The Music Venue Trust to support The Leadmill in Sheffield and other independent grassroots music venues across the UK.

Pottery to pop up in Fox Valley TWENTY potters and ceramic artists from the Yorkshire and Derbyshire area are coming together to showcase their work at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge on Sunday August 23 from 10am to 3pm. The Pop-Up Pottery event has been organised by The Northern Potters Association which exists to promote the work of potters, ceramic artists and clay sculptors throughout the North of England. And some of the very best are coming to this event including Fangfoss Pottery, Steve Ellis, John Hudson and Caroline Lee, to name just a few. This year it has been very difficult for craft-workers to exhibit their work with galleries, tourist sites, gift shops and craft fairs all closed due to the Covid 19 virus. This may well be the first, but hopefully not the last, opportunity for many of them to get out and display their work. This Pop-Up Pottery fair will be a good opportunity for the public to meet up with the makers, see their work – to discuss how things are made, what inspires their creations and perhaps even to purchase something unique. Although it is still summer, Christmas lurks on the horizon. All sorts of ceramics will be on display – from the functional mugs, jugs and vases, through to the purely decorative and artistic work. Everyone is welcome. For anyone wanting more information about this event please contact senpacoordinator@outlook.com or search for Northern-Potters on Facebook or Instagram.

THE green light has been given to a new retail development in Chapeltown, despite strong opposition.

An agreement has been reached for Lidl to run the retail property should the planning get the go-ahead.

Over 300 residents signed two petitions with further opposition on the planning application’s webpage. Among the concerns raised include that the area already has an oversaturation of supermarkets, and an increase in pollution, traffic and noise.

The show must go on STEEL Valley Beacon, the long-established, ground-breaking music and drama group, is refusing to be beaten by the Corona virus pandemic. This year was due to be the group’s busiest in its 20-year history. But lockdown brought down the curtain on ambitious plans. Under 11s were to perform ‘Alice’, one group of adults were to present several comedy sketches and another group ‘Allo! Allo!’, based on the popular TV comedy series. And when lockdown hit, Beacon’s teenagers were only days away from performing ‘A Marxist in Heaven’ as part of the National Theatre’s Youth Connections programme at the Crucible Studio in Sheffield. “The young ones had put everything into the show. We’d had big audiences at home, at Sheffield Hallam University and we had sold out at The Crucible. It was devastating when we were told the Connections Festival was cancelled,” said Mandy Aitken, artistic director of Steel Valley Beacon. After these blows earlier in the year, the group decided to fight back. Beacon have been using the social media video link, Zoom, to rehearse ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ which they plan to perform in late Spring and are looking at possible outdoor venues if indoor shows are still not possible. Mandy said: “I wanted us to do a show the whole company could work on and celebrate the easing of lockdown. This version of The Dream is a

musical and is translated into prose so is more accessible.” The show’s musical director is Daniel Timmins, who in partnership with Mandy has scored notable musical hits with Beacon, including the hilarious ‘Addams Family’ and the haunting Sondheim show ‘Into the Woods’. Steel Valley Beacon Trustees are registering the group as a charity and a company without any shareholders but limited by guarantors. Graham Elliott, chair of trustees, said: “Beacon has been really successful over the last few years and we felt it was time to develop the company further. Mandy and the trustees are currently planning for the future of Beacon. “We hope to offer the people of the valley and surrounding areas more opportunities to get involved in all kinds of performing arts activities, as well as continuing to produce professional plays and musicals. We see ourselves as a catalyst for bringing the community together and for supporting anyone who wants to perform or get involved backstage.” The Beacon is launching a playwriting/performing competition. Anyone aged four to 20 can enter a short play no longer than 15 minutes for no more than six actors. Beacon will provide online support via Zoom. Rob Hastie, artistic director of Sheffield Theatres, will choose the play he thinks is the best. There will be prizes! Contact Mandy on steelvalleybeaconarts1@gmail.com

Scheme gives a helpng hand to the Arms

THE Wortley Arms is a gem – serving up delicious gastro-pub and restaurant food in picture perfect surroundings.

Of course, like all businesses, the coronavirus pandemic created an element of uncertainty as to what life would look like after lockdown. But Jamie Ellis, who has owned the pub for two years after working near-enough every job there for 12 years, says that the early signs are good. “Since we’ve re-opened, the feedback has been really good. Not just for the food but also for the measures we’ve put in place to keep people safe. It’s a confidence thing I think, and that seems to be returning. There are a few regulars I haven’t seen yet but I understand that – it’s a

personal choice when people feel ready to go out again.”

can’t complain, it does seem to be working,” Jamie adds.

The Government’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme is now in operation on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in August. Participating restaurants can offer a 50% discount off food and non-alcoholic drink, up to the value of £10 per person.

But it’s not just about the beginning of the week. As a pub that prides itself on sourcing the best local ingredients, weekend dining is a big part of their business, offering up a fantastic roast dinner on a Sunday.

It was designed to get people back in the restaurants, giving the industry a muchneeded shot in the arm. And it seems to be doing the trick. The Wortley Arms is running the scheme on Tuesday and Wednesdays.

Meat comes from Crawhsaws Butchers, with lamb coming from Rick Lee’s lamb farm in Wortley. Beer comes from the much-lauded Bradfield and Stancill breweries, both based in Sheffield. As well as the great food and drink, the added bonus of the Wortley Arms is the location – a historic building in a picturesque village. It’s the perfect place to end a walk with a pint and a bite to eat.

LET YOUR LOCKDOWN DIARY HELP A HOSPICE PENISTONE FM are working with Barnsley Hospice as part of a new innovative project to help raise much needed funds for the Hospice during this difficult time. Here is how you can get involved - Get your pen or keyboard at the ready. Penistone FM and Barnsley Hospice want to hear about your lockdown experience through the Coronavirus pandemic, you don’t need any writing experience and the competition is open to everyone.

They want to hear your thoughts and feelings, in the format of a diary; it can be a look at the day in your life during lockdown or a reflection of your experiences. They want to hear from all walks of life and all different experiences, it can be happy, sad, funny, emotional and or reflective. There are two categories – eight to 16–year-olds and adults.

It’s a maximum of 500 words and it’s £5 to enter with all proceeds will go directly to the hospice.

The winners will be read out on the Radio by Ian McMillan and will receive a £25 gift voucher. Ian has offered some words of encouragement and inspiration. He said: “It’s always great to read new writing. It’s been amazing the response when you ask people to write a poem or a story or keep a diary they will be straight in there, I’m really looking forward to reading them.

“Be as personal as you want, because the personal can become the

universal, write about your street about the people you know, the things you’ve seen, about being stuck in your house…Throw in the odd things that will surprise me and make me think I never thought of that. “Write it in your voice, don’t put something artificial in it you can’t imagine yourself saying.” The plan will be to eventually pull together all the entries to publish a book of memories to keep for years to come and to show to future generation to explain the real life

By Ged Jenkins-Omar, Best Selling Author of ‘Help with Anxiety’ available on Amazon.

I am pleased to say that I will be continuing them monthly, so I will still be bringing you regular content. In the meantime, if you or anyone you know is struggling with anxiety, panic or worry then help is at hand. My book ‘Help with Anxiety’ has 150 tips and strategies covering many areas and it is available to order on Amazon.

From July 24, the Government made it mandatory to wear a face covering on all public transport and in shops, including supermarkets, in England. From August 8, face coverings will need to be worn in additional indoor settings in the following types of locations: • Auction Houses • Bingo Halls • Cinemas • Theatres • Community Centres • Concert Halls • Funeral Directors • Indoor Entertainment Ve ues • Libraries and Public Rea ing Rooms • Massage Centres

• Museums, Galleries, Aquariums, Indoor Zoos or Visitor Farms, or Other Indoor Tourist, Heritage or Cultural Sites • Places of Worship • Premises Providing Professional, Legal or Financial Services • Public Areas in Hotels and Hostels • Social Clubs • Storage and Distribution Facilities • Tattoo and Piercing Parlours • Nail, Beauty, Hair Salons and Barbers • Veterinary Services All Sheffielders will be required to wear a face covering in the above enclosed spaces where they can’t keep a safe distance (two metres) from others. If you can wear a face covering but choose not to then you may be given a fine or refused entry/service. This does not apply if you have a legiti-

mate reason not to wear a face covering or are exempt. By wearing a face covering you may help protect those around you and slow the spread of the virus. Face coverings may help to stop the spread of the virus if you have COVID-19, especially if you don’t have any symptoms. Remember, if you do develop symptoms you should stay at home, selfisolate and book a test. Face coverings may help by catching droplets that leave our mouths when we talk or cough. If we talk loudly, shout, sing, or exhale more during moderate exercise then we exhale more droplets. These droplets can contain the coronavirus that causes Covid-19. There are some exceptions such as very young chil-

dren, people who may find it difficult to breathe wearing a face covering, or people who due to disability are not able to comply. This also includes children under three years old (there are certain exceptions based on age, for example, under 11s do not need to wear a face covering on public transport, read the Government guidance). Please note that young children should have adult supervision when wearing a face covering. It can be dangerous for children or adults who are unable to remove face coverings unassisted to wear a face covering, particularly if they have breathing difficulties, so please use other measures instead such as social distancing, catch it/bin it/kill it for coughs and sneezes, and hand-washing.

To enter go to Penistone FM’s Facebook, click on the link for the Just giving page. Please send your entries through to studio@penistonefm.co.uk or post it to Penistone FM, Penistone 1, Regent Court, St Mary’s Street, Suite 7, Penistone, South Yorkshire, S36 6DT. Entries must be received by August 24 and winners will be announced on September 8.

Wellbeing Corner Hello! I hope you have had a good week? This week’s column brings this mini-series of weekly articles to a close. I hope you have enjoyed reading them and that they have been of some help to you, your life and your wellbeing.

FACE coverings are required in more locations across England after new Government rules came in from Saturday August 8.

experiences of lockdown for local people in South Yorkshire.

I wrote the book following a personal struggle with anxiety and depression. That is why I am signing off these weekly columns with something that is probably the most important thing that you can do if you are struggling with your mental health – TALKING. From my own experience, I know that when I have not spoken to someone about how I am feeling then I have always felt worse. Whether that has been when experiencing severe bouts of anxiety, negative thoughts, depression or stress. The more I kept things bottled up inside, the worse and worse I felt. When you do not share how you are feeling, life can seem more unmanageable and a lot gloomier. So, who can you talk to? Well, firstly you can talk to your family and friends.

Hopefully, you have someone within your close circle who you can talk to? If you feel like you can’t talk to them or you do not have anyone to talk to, then speak to your doctor. They will be able to help you and also signpost you to additional support, whether that is IAPT or something else. If you can financially afford it, I would suggest talking to a counsellor who specialises in the area you are struggling with. There are also support groups that you can reach out and engage with. In Sheffield, there is Sheffield Mind, Light Pre & Post Natal Support, Andy’s Man Club and many other organisations. If you are older and feel isolated and lonely then there is Age UK Sheffield. There are also phone lines like the Samaritans who can be contacted on 116 123. Thankfully there is a lot of support around and we are a lot more open as a society than in the past. Would I have written this article and my book a few years ago? Probably not. I would have feared being judged. I did fear being judged. So, I kept it all bottled up inside until that bottle went pop. Thankfully, we do not have to do that these days – so don’t. If you are feeling rubbish, anxious, depressed, stressed or obsessing over negative thoughts then talk to someone, talk to anyone. Just talk. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness then please speak to your doctor.

Rotary Club adapts to continue raising funds for charity THE Rotary Club of Wortley had to cancel their main annual charity fund raising event in July, the Vintage Vehicle Rally at Wortley Hall. Charity funds raised each year are allocated to a major benefactor, plus many small charities in our area. This year, the ongoing major benefactor was to be the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. An idea to raise charity funds for the Children’s Hospital by way of a virtual raffle was put forward and later organised by Trevor

Fletcher, president elect of the Rotary Club of Wortley. Club members, along with friends and relatives, contributed 10 quality prizes for the event. The aim was to try and raise £1,000. With the determination of Trevor to succeed, in maximising the efforts of all members of the Wortley Rotary Club, the raffle raised £2,500. A cheque for the total amount of £2,500 was accepted by Lucy Rathbone, regional fund raiser on behalf of the charity.

The Sheffield Children Hospital Charity has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Persimmon Homes Trust to receive a donation of up to £100,000 if they receive enough votes, through a public vote. People can vote once per day at www.persimmonhomes/building-futures/finalists. As it stands, The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity will receive £5,000 just for being a finalist. The vote closes on September 18. All the money will go to the cancer Ward Six development.

CHAPELTOWN BUSINESSES TO CELEBRATE VJ DAY OOOPS a Daisy and other Chapeltown businesses are celebrating the 75th anniversary of VJ Day and attempting to raise money for SSAFA and Gurkha Welfare UK. Proceeds will be shared equally between both. Many business along Station Road and one from Burncross have donated vouchers and items for a

raffle. Asda have donated prizes for fancy dress.

in business windows. Kids will follow clues to find them.

The event will take place at various businesses on Station Road on Saturday August 15.

“Between 9.30am and 12pm, Ooops a Daisy will host the sign up for fancy dress and soldier hunt.

Diane from Ooops a Daisy said: “At 9.30am, there will be the sign up for a ‘soldier hunt’ where we will be putting pictures of soldiers who fought in Burma, my dad included,

Between 9.30am and 12pm, outside Aspire hair salon, there will be war hair ‘up-dos’ and plaits. Other events will take place from 9.30am onwards too - Chula will be provid-

ing beauty sparkles, on faces if permitted, Momma Ink will be doing fake tattoos for kids, La Lumiere will be face painting, or arms if faces are not permitted. Ooops a Daisy will have a Tombola stall and Station Cafe will be running the bun stall. “Singer Alex John will appear at Chula Beauty from 12pm to 1pm,

providing a free performance. There will be a At 1.15pm, there will be a fancy dress contestant parade, with social distancing, from Aspire to the gardens at Newton Hall. This will be judged by members of Chapeltown in Bloom and the raffle will also be drawn by them.”

I’m coming up to my first year anniversary with Temple Spa and it’s been amazing!

What started as a little ‘side hustle’ has grown in to an exceptional business for me and my second “employment” although I’m my own boss. Never have I been more grateful for it than in these last few months when real stores and beauty rooms have closed down and I’ve watched friends lose their jobs. Temple Spa isn’t a ‘pyramid

scheme’ - if it was there’s no way I’d still be doing this nor would my business still be growing after all these years! It is a family-run business with 20 years as Temple Spa not to mention expertise put into Virgin Vie and Body shop. Born from a vision/dream for Mark and Liz, there was no looking back even today. If you would like to know more then I would love to talk to you - if it’s not for you

then thats okay, but I would ask please share with friends or family that are finding things a little difficult at the moment. No pressure to join, just a chat about how I love what I do and just want to share. IMPORTANTLY - A BIG thank you to all my friends, customers and supporters who keep me going every single day you’re ALL amazing!

TIGER UNDER KNIFE SHEFFIELD racer Kyle Howarth has revealed he has gone under the knife to correct his troublesome shoulder. But he’s also confirmed he expects to be fully fit for any racing which may take place in October – including a British Final. Said Howarth: “I’ve been doing some manual work with no racing and I must have aggravated the shoulder I damaged at Eastbourne last year. “It actually dislocated a few times so I decided to go for the surgery a fortnight ago. I had to go private because of the waiting list for operations right now. “The surgery was latarjet shoulder surgery. The crazy thing is I never had any problems during the winter but then it started dislocating. I knew if I could get it done I would be 100 per cent fit and raring to go for next season.

“The recovery time from the operation is between eight and 10 weeks, and next week I’ll be in the gym starting my fitness work again. “I want to be back on a bike in mid-late September so if there are a few meetings in October I can be at the start line ready to race. “I know I’ve done the right thing and I’ll be back strong.” Sheffield’s league season was scrapped two weeks ago but some clubs have stated they would like to run some open meetings in October.

The innings had contributions throughout, opener Jack Newton added 24, Chris Pickford top scored with and excellent 42, Matt Hague added 40 late on. Stocksbridge posted a slightly below par total of 154, however had still given themselves a good chance of victory with a good bowling display. As Totley batters typically do, they scored quickly but offered chances. The batters took risks and rode there luck. Opener Arif carried his bat and ended with 84 not out. Iqbal added 48 and Totley were now nearly home. Stocksbridge fought valiantly and managed to pick up seven wickets, three for captain Andy Hibbert, two for Jack Newton and two for Les Harris. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 106 all out (35 overs) Jake Vickers 26 Baslow 1st XI 110-3 (28.2 overs) Stocksbridge 2nd XI hosted Baslow this weekend in a top of the table clash that saw the league’s only two unbeaten teams face off against each other. Stocksbridge won the toss and elected to bat and almost made the worst possible start with Siddall being dropped on the very first ball of the match. Stocksbridge’s innings never really got going, with wickets falling at regular intervals and Baslow’s opening bowler Jack Parmar claiming five wickets. Only three Stocksbridge batsmen scored over 12 runs, with Jake Vickers top scoring with 26, ably supported by Matt Hague (20) and in form youngster Jack Firth (18). Madin’s innings included five sixes and five fours, with 32 of his runs coming from one over. Club chairman Siddall was hit for four sixes and two fours in his first over. Madin eventually fell to the bowling of Thwaites, however the game had already been lost, with Baslow needing just six to win with over 13 overs

GET THE GIRLS INTO GOLF

STOCKSBRIDGE and District Golf Club are looking to encourage more ladies to become involved in golf by signing up to the R and A women in golf charter.

The aim is to increase the number of women and girls playing and working in golf. Club secretary Sue Hill said: “We have a small but very enthusiastic ladies section with ladies of all abilities from six handicap to 38 so any ladies wanting to take up golf would be very welcome. Last year’s lady captain, Alison Sedgwick, started playing about 12 years ago to join her husband and two sons who all play regularly and has never looked back, enjoying the competitions and also the great social side which comes from being a member of the club. She won the Glenn Trophy two weeks ago and continued her success on Friday August 7, winning the ladies front nine stableford handicap qualifier with 20 points, one point ahead of Liana O’Sullivan on 19 points with Li-

ana’s mother Hilja taking third place with 16 points.

Alison continued her form taking second place in Sunday’s Olivia Rosebowl competition. The Rosebowl, a stableford competition, was won by Terri Moffett (36) with a score of 41 points, three ahead of Alison (34) on 38 points and Beverly Sykes (27) in third with 36 points. In the gents’ midweek medal on Thursday August 6, the first division (handicaps below 15) was won by Danny Farnsworth (13) with a net 60 after winning the midweek stableford competition two weeks earlier with 40 points. These two successes saw Danny’s handicap drop by one shot to 12. Second place was taken by Ben Stringer (06) with a net 63 and third place, not to be outshone by his mother and sister, was Liam O’Sullivan (04) with a net 64. Liam also had the lowest gross score of the day with a score of 68. Leading the second division with an exceptional round of net 58 (eight shots better than his

handicap) was Elliott Rogan (16) which sees his handicap reduce by two shots. Second place was taken by Martin Bradwell (18) with a net 63, two shots ahead of third place Jordan Flower (18) with a net 65. The Russell Bradbury Trophy, the third round of the club Championship, played on Saturday August 8, took place on one of the hottest days of the year and the dry course and lightning fast greens provided a stern test for all competitors. The top three players all had an excellent net 61 with the final placings decided on the back nine scores. Andy Hogg (27) came out on top with Ian Hulbert (13) in second place and Danny Farnsworth (12), again in the prizes in third place, ensuring his handicap dropped by another shot to 11. The lowest gross score of 66 was from Andrew Finney (04) which was enough to see his handicap drop to three giving him the bragging rights of having the lowest handicap in the club.
