FROM THE EDITOR
FROM TOP TO BOTTOM This issue is filled with the latest wall, floor and ceiling trends. Discover the different wall options available for your bathroom, including screed and tiles and a variety of waterproof wallpapers, see page 136. Still on the topic of floors, I chat to experts on what is trending in the world of carpets and rugs. We talk about the differences between carpets and rugs, including styles, maintenance and cleaning, see page 172. Choosing the right type of flooring for your home isn’t always easy, which is why it is advisable to consult with an expert first. On page 166 we give you a rundown on the latest indoor and outdoor flooring options, and gather advice on maintenance and durability. Did you know that your ceiling can drastically transform the look of your home? See page 158 for more on the benefits of bulkheads and trendy cornices. Not only will your roof add value to your home, but it will also improve its overall look and feel. Don’t forget this important feature of your home whenever you do your renovations, see page 154. If you’re looking to refresh your kitchen, turn to page 126 where Guinevere Davies talks us through the ins and outs of a complete kitchen renovation. Look out for a whole home makeover on page 180 and Shereen Lurie’s “How to” decorate your home using the colour pink on page 192.

POPPY KABINI
Founder/head designer of Get Access
P
oppy Kabini is a 29-year-old businesswoman and creative from Pretoria. Her love for design began in primary school where she was taught to crochet by a woman from her community. She then started making clothes from wool, but would only make them for herself and a few close friends and family. Her late grandfather, who was a master carpenter and craftsman, then taught her how to sew. While studying journalism and radio production at university, she started an informal business, making handbags and jewellery and selling them to her schoolmates and community members. Ever since, she’s been juggling between the media and the creative world.
What sets Get Access products apart? We cater for personalities. We believe that one’s home/space should be a representation of who they are and that’s why our products are not always standardised designs. We alw to put in a little something ex it be colour or texture. What excites you about local design? The authenticity, love and stories behind locally manufactured designs. What are your favourite décor items and why? I am in love with small pieces that bring a room together, so it would be cushions, centrepieces, planters and candleholders. Which part of your home is your favourite and why? My bedroom. I believe bedrooms are a sanctuary, a place of peace where one lets their guard down; so bedrooms should be a representation of peace. I don’t care if the whole house is messy, the bedroom must always be clean. What are your most memorable achievements? I don’t know if it’s an achievement, but having my son has been my most memorable moment ever. He has brought so much flair and meaning into my life. He is one of the reasons I always try by all means to push for greatness. My ideal holiday destination is Turkey, mostly because I love their thinking behind home design and would love to get inspiration from that; but for fun purposes, I would go for Disneyland and take my son. I can’t leave home without my notepad, pen and a bottle of water. I’m currently reading Azanian Love Song by Don Mattera.

AESTHETICS
Creative director of Decorex When it comes to choosing the style and colour scheme of your interior, the most important elements are the walls and ceilings, as these are the framework for what the rest of the room will look like. They set the look and mood of the space and establish the atmosphere. But while we spend years agonising about what paint colour to use on the walls, the ceiling typically gets little to no thought at all. Designers and home owners are now starting to think of creative ways to transform a space by giving the ceiling some much deserved “Colours to attention. And we can see this being keep in mind done with wooden panelling to give the include pops room that three-dimensional feel, which completely transforms a space. of sage green, In 2020, no decorative element can dark blues be left to chance. This will be the year and indigo.” of decorative explosion in the interior design sector, and making use of more unconventional materials for floors, walls and ceiling decoration is a must. Walls will take on a more textured 3D feel as our bodies continue to crave textured tactility in revolt of all the digital, smooth surfaces of our electronic devices that we come into contact with during the day. The future trends for wall, floor and ceiling design will be experimental and move away from the norm. They will give spaces more character with texture and three-dimensional walling solutions and fun elements such as decorating with prints. The colours to keep in mind include pops of sage green, 28 MARCH 2020
dark blues and indigo, and more desaturated colours to replace standard neutrals. It’s important to remember: our homes are our sanctuaries – a place to unwind and escape the stresses of the day. A place where we can re-centre ourselves and focus on what it means to be human. Something as simple as painting the walls will add a personal stamp to your space and make it feel like home. A personal touch is always on-trend.

Two design experts reveal why we’re looking at our walls, floors and ceilings in new ways
RAMIELLE DE JAGER
Managing director of Wolkberg Casting Studios Walls, floors and ceilings are like your blank canvas. They provide the perfect platform from which to build on your interior design scheme. These elements are also both functional and aesthetic, meaning they are important and should be well considered to allow for a long lifespan. I think each of these elements is easily overlooked, and they are not always given an equal amount of attention and consideration. This is largely due to the fact that we don’t realise how much more can be done with these elements, such as improved acoustics and energy efficiency. We have seen a rise in feature walls recently. Retail spaces, restaurants and hospitality industries are embracing bold colours, patterns and textures for walls and it is a matter of time before the home owner feels confident enough to embrace these elements in their homes. We are super excited to see the home owner embrace surfaces that are out of the ordinary and not the usual ceramic tiles. We see the home owner becoming brave enough to explore different finishes and textures for floors such as concrete, marble, terrazzo and Limesite tiles or surfaces. It’s important to keep in mind that these areas are functional as well, and if your budget permits, try to add to the acoustic and thermal value of your floors, walls and ceilings. Most importantly, we would like the home owner to not be afraid to use materials
that traditionally require a little more care. Our homes are our sanctuaries and that makes them worthy of special attention. If the difference is between having a remarkably beautiful tile that feeds your soul every time you step into a room but requires a polish every six months vs an ordinary tile that requires no upkeep but doesn’t feed your soul, I would advise making the sacrifice in favour of your soul. I am definitely open to the use of different materials outside of their ordinary applications in the home. I believe in the benefit of having an extraordinary room; it is worth the risk. My current design inspirations include the use of semiprecious metals for cladding walls and cupboard doors. Q

WATCH LESEGO MALOKA CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF PONE CREATIVES
P
one Creatives is a textile design and manufacturing studio owned by Lesego Maloka, a creative, modern African textile designer on a mission to spark joy through colour and heritage. Deeply rooted in her mother’s and grandmother’s influences, her brand Pone Creatives was born. Today Maloka specialises in jacquard weaving her textiles for home furnishings to create colourful, heritage-loving homes. My interest in textile design began when I was about five years old. Every day when I came from preschool I would spend an hour watching my late grandmother work. She was a knitter and a seamstress. She tried teaching me how to sew when I was about nine years old but I hated it because all I cared about was playing with my friends. I never planned to be in the textile industry or to be a textile designer. My career life started in the film industry as a set stylist/art director. Only later did I study interior decorating. I am Montwane, a grand-daughter of the Ndebele raised in the Batswana clan. My paternal clan is the Bantwane and my maternal clan is the Ndebele; both have been living around the Batswana clan. I am now finding out more about myself and my identity through using the textiles as my medium in the South African textile industry, surrounded by history, machinery and working in a factory that has been around for six decades.
My designs are inspired by childhood experience and are infused with my heritage. I was raised in an eclectic home where colour, pattern and imperfection were everywhere. This is where I learnt to not fear colour and pattern and to embrace it as its own life and purpose. Favourite local designers include Ronel Jordaan – I love the innovative products she makes using felt. She is very passionate and her signature is always so vivid in her work. One of my favourite designs is the Pone Creatives rug. It is one piece that always brings a smile to my face. South African design is a combination of unity and avantgarde “cultural diversity”. South Africa is so rich in its heritage and I love how the design industry has an uncanny way of expressing itself. The 2019 Design Indaba’s Emerging Creatives is where I launched our first Pone Creatives Jacquard woven range. It was such an amazing platform to be involved in, opened new doors for Pone Creatives and allowed the company to enter into an intense period of growth. I am currently working on a new textile range. Q Visit www.ponecreatives.com

ituated in an exclusive development on the banks of the Sabie River on the eastern side of the Kruger National Park, this lodge offers almost instant access to the best of the big five and the beauty of the Lowveld. It’s a home away from home that was created to be enjoyed year-round, as the developer explains: “The pool is heated to allow for cooler climates during winter periods and a flame line gas-burning fireplace creates a cosy feel for night-time chilling and conversations in the lounge area.

“Perhaps the most striking feature of the lodge’s design is the ease with which it blends into its natural surrounds.” “The vast covered patios and open deck area allow for cooler spaces to relax, read a book and unwind during the summer heat as well as offer endless hours of fun in the pool.” One of the most important aspects of the build involved ensuring the kitchen area integrated seamlessly with the rest of the living space. “This creates a connection between the “heart of the home” and the rest of the house. The vast and uncompromising central living area has been designed to facilitate as much space as possible.” The developer adds, “Another key aspect is how the pool, deck and fire pit relate to the covered external living spaces to allow for the uninhibited movement between these areas. Considering this is a lodge and not a primary residence, I believe that the design and layout is well suited for a holiday experience. Natural finishes in the form of stone-coloured wall finishes, concrete vanities, dark timber and natural stone cladding were softened with the inclusion of a neutral colour palette and rich finishes including leather and textured fabrics. In doing so the privacy of the lodge has been maintained while achieving magnificent vistas onto the Sabie River. The lodge is also located on the eastern side of the property development and has the most magnificent views into the Kruger. or many, a forever home in the countryside where they can retire to is a mere dream, but for these home owners it became a reality when they found their location. Situated in and around Lanseria, Gauteng, this secure housing estate ticked all the boxes. “Of the estate, only 3% of the land is covered by housing, while the rest is of beautiful untouched bushveld and grassland with many manicured common areas giving a feeling of peace, space and being close to nature, without being too far from the hustle and bustle of city life, as it is only a 20-minute drive to Fourways, Johannesburg. Therefore we went for an open-plan, airy, light and environmentally green home. It was important for us to create a more free and positive space,” says the owner. The interior of the home has been designed in such a way as to express life, colour and inconsistency. “At the same time, we aimed to showcase an aspect in each corner or room that combines the look of our home. In most parts, we went for a more modern approach and stuck to a grey palette with hints of vibrant colours to complement the abundance of glass and stainless steel.” There are many beautiful and awe-inspiring spaces throughout the home, but one that stands out for this family is the entertainment area. “This is the biggest part of the home and it is all combined, creating a flow from the bar and dining area all the way to the outside braai/patio and pool area.” When it comes to favourite spaces, the owner says it has to be the lounge, “as it holds the homiest atmosphere and it is where we as a family spend quality time after a busy day, enjoying a glass of wine with the fireplace as the centre point”. hen these home owners went about creating their home, they knew from the start that they wanted a residence in which the family could grow; a home that would give them years of great memories as a family and with friends. Keeping this in mind, the property was built to cater for various stages of life, and all the bedrooms are on the ground floor for ease of access. It has two separate wings, one for the bedrooms and the other containing the more social rooms including the music, games and home theatre rooms. “This is a family-friendly home that caters for all ages. I
am a TV host, a girl who lives in constant curiosity and a pursuit of magic. I’m a fiery Aries and the founder and owner of Finery Handcrafted Gin who loves sexy, moody music
My preferred home style is modern but with a touch of classic pieces. My home is important to me because it’s my haven in a chaotic life. It’s the place I go to exhale after a busy day. Home is everything.
120 MARCH 2020
I chose it because I needed a new space after I broke off my engagement. It wasn’t actually for sale, but the estate agent knew I would love it and insisted I see it. I had just landed from the USA, was pretty tired, but after I ran upstairs and took in the view, I made an offer on the spot. The similarity between my home now and the home I grew up in is that while there was a lot more space and a massive garden in my childhood home, both homes are like busy train stations. The feel and heart is the same. My favourite object in my home is my incredible mirror which lights up after I plug it in so it resembles a 3D tunnel. It’s where I repeat my affirmations every morning. They go like this: “I am youthful and timeless. I am happy. I am loved. My life is full of abundance and adventure.” My favourite artists include Lionel Smit and Frans Smit. My most loved pieces of furniture are the beautiful old wooden dinner chairs made by my father Tony which I reupholster and repaint whenever I feel like a change. I get bored easily.
My favourite style of entertaining is a combination. I entertain a lot so I either host formal dinner parties with place cards and fancy crockery or very informal dinners where I cook while people are already here. I’m not exactly an amazing cook but I can be adventurous – if I follow a recipe.
Jeannie D
The best piece of decorating advice I have been given came from my godmother who said, “Don’t just buy furniture for the sake of it. Rather leave your home empty until you find pieces you love.”
Jeannie D
If I could do anything to my home it would be to raise the ceilings and make it double volume.
The music that helps me chill the most is my own playlist on Apple. I love deep house music that is sexy, moody or has a punchy beat. Music shared is energy shared. If I were as rich as Oprah, I would live in an apartment in New York overlooking Central Park and maybe a villa in St Tropez. I’d also love to convert an old monastery in Lisbon into a home. I know a couple who did it. It’s completely classic on the outside and slick and modern on the inside. If I had to choose a flatmate for a year, it would be Leonardo DiCaprio. My favourite colour scheme, décor-wise, is monochromatic – mainly scales of grey – with colour coming from art and plants. The one thing guests visiting me may not do is – nothing! There are no rules in my home. I relax at home by sitting on my balcony with an ice cold drink watching the Atlantic Ocean at sunset. Sometimes if I’m lucky dolphins swim by. My guilty pleasure is gin and tonic. Q

ANDREW MACLAREN-TAYLOR DIRECTOR AT BATHROOM BUTLER
A
ndrew Maclaren-Taylor started working for Bathroom Butler (a family business) after completing his studies. His father started the company in the 1970s and taught him and his siblings the ropes of business and the importance of work ethic. In 2005 they launched Bathroom Butler to the market and today it is one of the leading manufacturers of bathroom accessories and heated towel rails. What sets Bathroom Butler products apart? We are driven by innovation and engineering excellence with our focus on design and quality. One of our innovations is our patented RIGID Loc Mounting System for bathroom accessories. We engineered it with the consumer in mind to eliminate the problem of bathroom accessories constantly coming loose. We have also pioneered advanced Dry Element Technology (DET) for our heated towel rails, and we were among the first brand in South Africa to start using grade 304 stainless steel for our products instead of chrome. The most frustrating aspect of my job is not having enough time and resources to always achieve the ambitious goals we set for ourselves. And the most rewarding one is watching how the people within our business quickly grow to have the same love and passion for Bathroom Butler that I have.
122 MARCH 2020
Apart from my profession, I’m passionate about my family. I am married with two children under five. I love spending time with my wife and kids. I love watching my children grow and learn new things for the first time. As much as we teach them, they are here to teach us something new too, and we can rediscover the world through their eyes. I am also passionate about healthy living – healthy eating and exercise. The most cherished space in my home is definitely my bathroom and our dining room. Being in the bathroom industry I have a fine appreciation for what goes into all the products we have in our bathrooms. I know that my wife would agree, the one thing we cannot live without is our heated towel rail. It is something that is very difficult to explain but waking up in the morning and not having a dry and warm towel after showering just sets the day off to a bad start. We spend time together as a family in the dining room, away from all the distractions of the outside world and technology. I draw inspiration from travelling. I am fortunate that what I do requires me to travel often, so I am inspired by these different places, cultures and traditions. Being able talk to different people and hearing their diverse views and perspectives on life has given me a broader understanding of the world. What was your last home décor purchase? Our patio furniture. My greatest extravagance is … I don’t really have any extravagance. If you could fix one thing in South Africa today, what would it be? Unemployment. Give a person a job and you give them the power to change their life. Name one place you’ve been to that lives up to the hype? Hong Kong. It is a bustling city that fascinates me and never disappoints. What advice would you give to your younger self? Trust your gut more and take more risks. My guilty pleasure is coffee. Q

here are few things more satisfying than being able to enjoy a well-designed kitchen. It’s the most important area of the home, and for this reason, often the most expensive. countertops in a wider range of colours that are stylish yet enduring.” Says blu_line’s Philip Richards, “I think what people will often find is that their kitchen has not been properly thought through. What I mean by this is that the various demands made by a modern family require careful consideration and attention, not only to the overall flow but also to the internal design of the cabinets. With this, the design needs to be timeless ensuring that it can work as an architectural anchor to the home from a functional as well as aesthetic point of view.”
KEY CONSIDERATIONS
REASONS TO REMODEL When it comes down to it, there are really only two reasons to consider a kitchen remodel, says Slavin’s Daniel Slavin. “It’s either to update an old look, or if the kitchen is no longer functional or working as was originally intended.” Selma Zaifoglu of Linear Concepts agrees. “The biggest reason home owners remodel their kitchens is to bring the space into the present and to eliminate outdated looks. The trends change along with client expectations. And technological improvements should also be considered, for example, improvements in stone types provide more hygienic, non-porous materials for 128 MARCH 2020
No matter your reason, there is one aspect of a kitchen remodel that requires the most careful consideration of all. Eurocasa’s Melanie Stein says, “Planning is everything, I cannot stress this enough. Hire a kitchen specialist and toil, if you must, until you are satisfied with every aspect of the kitchen and overall room design. This will ensure accurate estimates from all the contractors involved, avoid costly changes and delays and greatly assist in the overall project coordination.” Professional advice will save you from making costly mistakes in the future, advises Linear Concepts’ Zaifoglu. “A full kitchen remodel can be a daunting task and products from a kitchen specialist may seem expensive at first glance to some clients as they are not always fully aware of all the benefits that these costs include. A beautifully designed yet functional kitchen along
with after-sales guarantees and services are extremely important to ensure the durability of your kitchen. What may seem like a less costly estimate from a general contractor could end up costing the clients so much more should something go wrong in the long run.” Slavin says, “We always ask clients what they like about their existing kitchen and what they would like to change. Establishing what doesn’t work is just as important as implementing tried and-tested layouts or designs. A well thought out kitchen layout is imperative to getting the most out of your investment.” Martin and Retha Aylward of Easylife Kitchens Tygervalley say, “Have a budget and keep the cost of appliances and the building work, which always seems to cost more than expected, top of mind. This means considering the costs for tiles and a tiler, plumbing, electrical work, painting and the preparation of walls and seemingly small things like the replacement of ceiling cornices and skirtings.”
As far as budget is concerned, be prepared to spend the bulk of it on good-quality cabinetry and hardware. “Choose the best quality cabinetry that you can afford,” says Eurocasa’s Stein.

“Check the quality of the cabinetry carefully, open and close elements and check the finishes as well. Your worktops and appliances are obviously key, but cabinetry that fails around these elements will spoil your new kitchen.” Easylife Kitchens Tygervalley’s Aylwards agree. “Hardware is what makes a kitchen last. A new kitchen will quickly look like an old neglected kitchen if the hardware, such as hinge sand runners, are not good quality as doors sag and drawers struggle to open and close. To rectify and replace bad hardware tends to be a very expensive exercise and kitchen companies generally do not want to get involved with it, so you might end up spending as much as what the original kitchen cost.” Besides the best quality cabinetry and hardware, choosing a neutral colour palette is also a good guarantee of a kitchen’s longevity. Says blu_line’s Richards, “We always recommend a neutral colour scheme that will ensure a timeless flow to the space. 130 MARCH 2020

“Establishing what doesn’t work is just as important as implementing triedand-tested layouts or designs.” – Daniel Slavin With this, we cater for all the various functions that could be demanded from this space so that as a family develops or changes the kitchen is able to continuously serve the needs of the home.” According to Slavin, “A truly timeless kitchen doesn’t bow to current trends. Rather, embrace the classics that can be easily appreciated and appropriated to different styles.” Linear Concepts’ Zaifoglu says, “By implementing a minimalist design and the use of timeless features like natural colours, the client will ensure that their kitchen remains in style for the next decade at least. Bold and bright colours tend to go out of style quickly and will leave you with an outdated look much sooner than a neutral palette.” When in doubt though, one key piece of advice shines above all others: you can’t go wrong with more drawers. Eurocasa’s Stein says, “They add so much pleasure when working in the kitchen and so much practicality. Be aware when your kitchen specialist is giving you a costing that they have included enough of these and the necessary accessories – you don’t want to end up with a pretty kitchen with no substance.” Q With thanks to blu_line, Easylife Kitchens Tygervalley, Eurocasa, Linear Concepts and Slavin MARCH 2020 131

LET’S TALK TILES AND SLABS According to Nicole Russell of Italtile: “Based on products received from our Spanish imports, a matte finish seems to be a growing trend. The matte finish looks quite classy and elegant, providing a sleek and low-sheen look to the walls. And it’s easy to maintain. Another trend that’s making quite the impression is the dimensional tile. There are varieties of geometric-shaped tiles for bathroom walls. One of the most popular among dimensional tile shapes is the hexagonal shape – a retro style that’s coming back.” Size is one of the biggest trends, says Angela van Niekerk of Union Tiles: “The days where home owners would take 138 MARCH 2020
small tiles to accommodate a small bathroom are over. They have noticed how the larger tile gives a more seamless look, less joints and makes the area look so much bigger. Technology is taking the tile industry to new levels and the new large-format tiles, ‘sintered porcelain’, are breathtaking. The designs, textures and colours available in these large formats are inspiring in their beauty.” Natural and natural-looking tiles are still hugely popular. Oren Sachs of WOMAG elaborates: “We will continue to see the timeless appeal of Terrazzo. A mix of natural stone, cement and marble, Terrazzo can be used anywhere. From walling to flooring, this versatile material is long-lasting and creates a seamless look. With unlimited colour and material combinations, it is best to go for natural tones with smaller fragmented Terrazzo for a more refined look. For a bolder more striking look choose a dark tone with varying fragment sizes. Marble, on the other hand, is ideal for creating a classic bathroom haven. Traditionally reserved for the elite, marble tiles and slabs create an elegant, expensive look, but with marble-look porcelain tiles and Phoenix Stone slabs the possibilities are now endless.” Adding that much-desired vibrancy, custom-printed porcelain slabs are new to the market. Karen Guvenilir of
Cara Saven Wall Design Continua
Continua introduces this new concept, saying: “Printed designs on large-format Porcelain Slabs are an exciting development. Our Design your Slabs range by Maxfine – available at Continua – is an incredible way to personalise your living areas. The range offers endless possibilities of printing any image or design on large porcelain slabs. This is a technological revolution in the world of design and is a durable alternative for wallpaper especially in bathrooms.”
CEMENTED IN STYLE Durable and easy to maintain, cement-based finishes/coatings, such as screed, for walls and falls are hugely popular in contemporary homes. Joanne Sykes of Cemcrete highlights three of the latest trends in cement-based wall and floor applications: “Sleek and smooth, Cemcrete’s CemCote Skimmed and Cemcrete’s SatinCrete products are perfectly tailored for this modern trend. Movement (mottling) and a natural concrete look – Cemcrete’s CemCote Skimmed
TOP TIP
Tiling on a painted wall is not advised as the tile glue will adhere to the paint and over time the weight of the tile can pull the paint away from the wall, causing the tile to fall off. To prevent this, chip the wall surface to create a rougher texture. Mix the tile glue with bonding liquid to ensure that the tile has a textured surface to adhere to. – Karen Guvenilir, Continua
Concrete Grey and new grey colour range is effortless in achieving this look. CemCote Skimmed is suitable for wet areas as well, such as showers, completing this look throughout the bathroom. Wallpaper in bathrooms has become the norm in many modern homes. Peter Gordon of St Leger & Viney says vinyl wallpaper is an option to consider for wetter areas, such as a guest loo, that get the odd splash. “If you decide to use wallpaper in the bathroom, the most important consideration is ventilation. Excess moisture and humidity may cause the wallpaper to peel off but if the space is well ventilated, standard wallpaper should work in your space. It is also best to avoid wet areas, so wall-papering above tiles is best practice.” Offering two wall design products that are perfect for bathroom walls, Cara Saven Wall Design custom designs wallpaper, vinyl and canvas for residential use. Founder Cara Saven says there are a few major trends in wall design when it comes to bathroom walls. “Nature and bringing the outside in. Everyone is worried about our Earth and one way to show it is to bring her into our spaces. Animals and a bit of quirkiness – nothing like feeling like you’re in the jungle when sitting on the throne. Textures – concrete, metallic, marble: these are all still trending, but now they are being mixed together to create a sense of interest – think marble and metal together.” Q

Foo Dog Design’s Brad Clark adds, “My design approach is multifaceted and varied because I practise design in more than one area. I like to think of myself as a ‘functional hippie’. I try to tread lightly on the planet with everything I do, design and manufacture. I also strongly believe that design must be available to everyone and not just the super wealthy. Simple practical products and solutions have a place in every sphere of society.” OKHA’s Adam Court says, “I usually design objects with a brief, persona or project in mind. Recently I decided to look at concepts that represent aspects of my character, both physically and physiologically, so the process of design is quite meditative and introspective.”

Biggie Best’s head of merchandising, Elbe Truter, says, “We’re currently inspired by neutral colours and natural textures. The idea of changing décor every season is not sustainable. Not only will natural linen upholstery allow you to easily update any furniture piece with a selection of décor accessories, if looked after properly, it can last a lifetime.” For DL Furniture’s Roy Griffiths, colour and shape will always be key. “I don’t base my designs on one style or design, and I feel that’s what makes it so exciting! I prefer to combine various colour, gildings, carvings and style combinations. We have been developing a few new

designing and developing items to complete homes.” Says OKHA’s Court, “I’m constantly drawn to rich, moody and dark colours. I find rich wood stains or dramatic linens and velvets in colours often associated with nature, such as emerald greens, very inviting. The same applies to my texture palette, which is all about materials that are weighted and carry an innate value and moodiness or drama.” Lemon’s Frankental adds, “Fabric and colours are a critical element in our design process. Sometimes we will find a fabric we love and design a sofa just to use that fabric. Use a different fabric, for argument’s sake, and the entire sofa changes. So fabric and colour are an integral part of form for us.” Raw materials are the catalyst for Bofred’s Erasmus and Botha too, “We love textured earth tones, but materials that push the boundaries are always inspiring.”

THE PERSONAL TOUCH If there is one essential piece of advice for creating a c space, it’s that time and consideration are key. Lemon’s Frankental advises, “Don’t purchase it all in one go. Th will just create a manicured space that won’t have mea Instead, purchase good-quality pieces over time and ch things you are drawn to, that you can live with and put feet on. Don’t worry about the pieces being the perfec or colour for the space. If you have chosen well and bo good quality, they will come together to create a space uniquely yours.” Foo Dog Design’s Clark agrees, adding, “It’s very sim your living space makes you happy and you want to spe in it then you have done a great job. Don’t take it too se Keep it simple and functional and buy at least once piec good-quality furniture you will hand down to your childre is a journey and our spaces have to tell our stories.” As do Bofred’s Erasmus and Botha, who say, “We b in surrounding yourself with furniture and art that you l and that makes you happy. Not buying it all from one d

Creating pieces that fit perfectly into any space is a priority for Foo Dog Design’s Clark. “For me texture, context and materials are much more important than colour. The natural colours of timbers juxtapositioned against smooth steel in neutral colours like black, grey and white are where my personal taste lies. This choice allows our furniture to integrate seamlessly into any environment.”

or retailer and not all at once. A living space should have old and new, history and intention and not just be following a current trend.” For Biggie Best’s Truter, a cohesive colour palette is a sure-fire solution for mixing and matching various styles of furniture. “Colour is key to bringing any room together. I recommend choosing a neutral colour to use as a base and adding a few pops of colour, pattern and texture with scatter cushions, curtains, décor accessories and rugs.” Says DL Furniture’s Griffiths, “Keep your colour palette simple with a small boost of colour to add excitement. Create balance and don’t over-clutter – keep it simple and comfortable.” Balance is important, according to OKHA’s Court. “Mixing is less of a problem than overcrowding. Any combination of styles can be cohesive, provided two qualities are met: the style and piece resonate with you personally, and the pieces are kept to a minimum, with emphasis placed on the quality of a particular piece.” Q With thanks to Biggie Best, Bofred, DL Furniture, Foo Dog Design, Lemon and OKHA

The general tendency is moving towards using roofing and roof space more economically, ergonomically and aesthetically. Ergonomic enhancements such as better roof structure design to keep the walls in the shade (Bali style), improved insulation to reduce use of energy to heat or cool living spaces and incorporating solar panels in the structure are trends to keep an eye on. In economic terms we are seeing better practical use of the roof space. Loft rooms, loft ladders and loft storage allow home owners to get more bang for their buck.”
INNOVATION AT THE CORE an indication of its efficiency as insulator.” When it comes to eco-efficient solutions, Alexander Finlay, director of HP Plum & Co, expects new solar innovations to become predominant. “We foresee new solar innovations and more efficient ways to lay and construct various roof structures, improvements in waterproofing membranes as well as roofing details.” Q With thanks to HP Plum & Co, JNA Group and Rooftek
RAISE THE ROOF Kalahari Bruwer of Rooftek shares three top tips on selecting the right roof: 1. Talk to a roofing specialist, for example, a roof truss manufacturer. We have seen thousands of ideas over time, and we still learn every day. 2. Spend extra on insulating the roof space. Gather as much advice as possible as some product information may be misleading. I recommend gas-filled board, for example, Isoboard, as it works well as both ceiling and insulation. 3. Do not forget to allow for the extra weight of solar panels and geysers.

When it comes to innovation in roofing – it lies in the advancement of the materials used. Visagie says: “Exploring with combining of materials has become more popular; timber and steel and even thatch and sheeting combinations. Research has been done to improve the longevity of thatch. JNA Thatchers (part of the JNA Group), in cooperation with other specialists, has, over the past couple of years, managed to establish the R-value of thatch roofs, which once again serves as

Shereen Lurie explores different ways to make an impact with innovative ceiling, bulkhead and cornice design
ften it’s the parts of your home you wouldn’t ordinarily pay attention to that have the ability to transform its overall aesthetic. Case in point: the ceiling. From bold bulkheads to exposed structural trusses, there are many ways to make an impact with your fifth wall.
DECISIONS, DECISIONS ...
Pelican Systems
Your ceiling can dramatically transform the overall look of your home so it is important to consider your home’s overall look and feel before conceptualising your ceiling. Shelley James, principal architect at Palette Studio, says ceilings can create open loft-like and airy spaces or low-level cosy spaces. James says you can also combine both ideas by introducing a bulkhead into an open space, thus allowing a smaller portion to have a more intimate spatial quality. According to Richard Fenton, regional sales manager and Denise Gould, general manager at Pelican Systems, ceilings are no longer just installed to conceal the elements in a building; they are now a major design element that allows interior designers and architects the opportunity to play with light, levels and shapes within a home. They emphasise how vital it is to consider your ceiling as a fifth wall in the room: “At the design stage, consider the effect that you want to create

in the room and how your ceiling can contribute to that look and feel. The ceiling height will be an important factor in terms of what is possible and worthwhile in terms of value. Budget is also important as is the maintenance of the ceiling.” Cornices, the narrow mouldings that you see capping the lines where the walls of a room meet the ceiling, are then the final touch in ceiling design. Mayvis Hattingh, admin manager at NMC Décor, says that traditionally, they were made from wood, plaster, papercovered plaster and polyurethane, but nowadays they are made from polystyrene. “As a material, polystyrene is resistant to damage caused by exposure to water and moisture, which makes them ideal for applications in wet areas throughout your home, such as the kitchen, bathroom, outdoor patios, basements and attics.” Cobus Lourens, business development manager at Swartland, adds that polystyrene cornices are available in a wide variety of designs and styles, so there is something to suit any type of interior composition – from traditional to contemporary. In contrast to timber cornices that require multiple mouldings to create a layered structure, polystyrene cornices are available in a single piece of intricate design.”

“From bold bulkheads to exposed structural trusses, there are many ways to make an impact with your fifth wall.”
MAKE A STATEMENT Shelley James from Palette Studio suggests you consider the following before selecting a “statement ceiling”: The ceiling heights and levels that you want to achieve. If using the underside of a concrete slab, carefully decide where and how you want your lighting and services to look; either integrated or exposed.
If your ceiling design balances out other key design features – often “less is more”.
NMC Décor
Palette Studio
TRENDING NOW James has noted a number of different trends in ceiling design, including cladding your ceiling with a timber finish, or wrapping a wall cladding from the vertical to the horizontal plane to become your ceiling and exposing a roof’s structural trusses and recessing ceilings between these. This is done using a product such as Isoboard which provides a tongue and groove ceiling effect, while acting as your roof insulation, using the underside of a concrete slab as the final ceiling finish and boxing in structural beams with solid oak with ceilings between. Bulkheads above kitchen islands, beds or even feature baths all assist in creating an emphasis to those key areas, while allowing for a playful response with recessed lighting that can wash onto adjacent ceilings or pendant lights brought to a lower level. Traditional timber brandering of the past has been replaced by steel brandering, which gives a straighter finish and is longer lasting, not being susceptible to insects and deterioration of over time, say Fenton and Gould. “The plasterboards used are now a 7mm or, in upmarket homes, a 9mm thickness, which offers additional insulation, extra stability and the 9mm boards allow you to finish the ceiling with a tape and joint finish instead of a full skim. With these cleaner lines and more stability there has been more opportunity to add in design features in the form of bulkheads, which can be stepped, curved, angular or stripped elements in the ceiling.”

Hattingh believes that the simplicity of installing polystyrene cornices is probably the number one reason they’re so popular. In fact it’s so easy that it can be quickly and easily achieved as a simple DIY job. This is because polystyrene is really lightweight, easy to cut, glued into place, and is flexible enough to “forgive” surfaces that are not 100% straight. “Since polystyrene cornices are installed using special adhesive glue, they can be successfully mounted onto a whole host of different surfaces, including concrete, wood, face brick, marble, tile, vinyl, steel, granite and plastic, to name just a few.” Fenton and Gould say the cornice market is extensive and there are many profiles to choose from to create effects including Grecian, Tuscan and so on, but the latest trend is cornice profiles that include lighting troughs and allow for indirect lighting as a design and ambient ceiling feature.
THE BENEFITS OF BULKHEADS John Coutts, owner of Coutts Construction, says it is common now for the living areas of houses to be open plan, so with the exception of the furniture the ceiling is the only fixed feature that identifies different areas within the house. Bulkheads provide a great opportunity to create clean lines in an interior, to bring task lighting into play while allowing for recessed strip lights that can wash upwards or onto adjacent ceilings. James emphasises that you always consider the distance between focused lights and the lines you create in the space with the lights. She says lighting in bulkheads should also correspond with the purpose of the space below. You may use downlighters for more focused light above a kitchen counter, or perhaps pendant lights hung from a bulkhead above a dining room table. Coutts notes that bulkheads and lighting go hand and hand and clever use of strip lighting can create different spaces in open areas. “Be aware, however, that direct lighting can reveal any flaws in workmanship. The key with any recessed lighting is to use reflected light. This has a more diffused look and will not highlight any imperfections in an otherwise wellconstructed ceiling.” Q With thanks to Coutts Construction, NMC Décor, Palette Studio, Pelican Systems and Swartland

INDOORS When it comes to the inside of your home, the options are vast. “In the residential market, we have seen requests for less busy, polished concrete floors,” says Darren Jacobs, technical global brand manager for Lafarge South Africa. “Often where clients do not want to see excessive amounts of aggregate, either a moderately speckled appearance or simply polished concrete with required pigmentation will be used.” If you are looking for something different, resin floors are also gaining in popularity. “Designers love resin floors as they create a beautiful blank canvas that accentuates your fittings and furnishings instead of fighting to steal the show,” says Warren Varrie, the managing director of Teracoat Seamless Resin Flooring. On the other hand, if you still prefer the look of solid wood in your home, these types of floors will remain timeless and Nick Gluckman, the owner of Oggie Flooring, says a wooden floor “adds warmth to the home, has transcended generations and still remains popular”. He says: “When you are selecting flooring, go for a product that lives comfortably with all furniture and allows you to change your style with ease.” Hanel Appleby, sales director at Lalegno SA, says when you are considering what type of floor to purchase, you should “always go for the timeless options. Quality goes a long way. And check with a local professional before you start chopping up existing floors as it might be possible to lay your new wooden floors or SPC rigid flooring over existing floors”.

“Use the same or similar type of floor throughout the interior and exterior so there is a sense of continuity.”
Just as there is a variety of indoor flooring options, there is also a wide selection to choose from when it comes to exterior flooring. In this space, you will want something that is hardwearing and versatile, and an option that requires little maintenance, but still manages to look great throughout the years. “Large-size tiles, smoother textures and colour tones towards cool greys and a softer mottled look” are on-trend, according to Brett Bailey, sales and design manager at The Creative Stone Company. “When looking at different flooring solutions, it is always best to seek advice from professionals. They can guide you in the right direction and provide sound advice regarding the right products to best suit your home. Use top installers as well, as this is the key to a beautiful finish.”

Another exterior flooring option to consider is “decking” and Glenn Varrie, director of Newtechwood, explains that “decking is an outdoor flooring option that is warm and dynamic and allows for the separation of various levels quite easily”. He says if you’re considering decking, you should look into “second-generation composite decking, which offers no maintenance and is therefore a much-preferred option over natural wood products”. “Second-generation composite decking differs from firstgeneration due to the fact that it has a cap or protective layer bonded to the core of the board, which protects the core from the elements thereby drastically increasing longevity of the boards themselves,” he explains. They’re ideal for dividing small bachelor apartments without being a permanent structure.” – Anthony Mederer, managing director at Taylor Blinds & Shutters
“Plantation Shutters® timber shutters are used when a room divider is needed to enclose a space or keep a smaller portion of a large room warm. These are also often installed to create a small study nook or office or separate an en suite bathroom from a bedroom or to separate a kitchen from a dining room or scullery. The security shutters made from aluminium are used when one needs to secure an area, for example a dressing room that has jewellery, a study with confidential documents or the entrance to the sleeping area of the home.” – Briggie Kirchmann, head of marketing at Plantation Shutters

people know the difference between a carpet and a rug. But for those who don’t, let me tell you. A carpet is often glued to the floor and made to cover it from wall to wall. A rug is usually used on the carpet for décor purposes such as adding colour or adding another layer of texture. Rugs are smaller than carpets and come in different materials.
POPULAR TEXTURES AND PATTERNS According to Mo, “When it comes to the types of rugs available, the possibilities are endless. However at Coricraft most of our rugs are natural textures, polypropylene for outdoors and a poly-blend for our other indoor styles.”
>
MARCH 2020 175
Paras Carpets
Blumberg says, “Carpets usually refer to the wall-to-wall variety, whereas rugs are movable and usually areaspecific. You can most certainly use the two together – mostly with a neutral carpet, and then a rug that adds colour or texture. Similarly, if you have a dark carpet, you can add more neutral rugs to lighten the space.” Mo adds that, “Carpets are fixed features that need to be installed professionally. Rugs are not fixed and a lot more interchangeable as your style evolves. You can absolutely pair rugs and carpets together. Our advice is to select a fairly neutral carpet colour and texture and update it with patterned, colourful rugs.”
MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING Care and cleaning instructions differ from one rug to the next, depending on the type of fibre it’s made from, says Mo. “The best way to care for your rug is to ensure you vacuum it regularly to keep dust and dirt from pulling into the fibres. For small stains you can do spot cleaning, but for anything else we recommend you get it professionally cleaned.” For Blumberg, the following points depend on the kind of rug: • We suggest professional cleaning for Persian and Oriental rugs. • We have a range of machine-washable rugs that can be cold-washed in your washing machine (provided it is large enough) and then left out to dry in the sun. • Our outdoor rugs are easy to clean, as they are mildew-resistant and UV-stable, which means they can be used in an outdoor environment, with little damage being experienced. The outdoor rugs can be washed with a hosepipe and any carpet shampoo.
176 MARCH 2020
DID YOU KNOW? Persian and Oriental rugs are considered investment pieces and can create a more opulent and sophisticated look, but come at a higher cost. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RUG AND A CARPET
Husky Design
WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN PURCHASING A CARPET OR RUG Mo says the three main elements to consider when selecting a rug are colour, size and fabric. “When selecting the colour of the rug, keep in mind the existing colours and patterns of your interior and balance them out with your rug’s colour and pattern. As a general rule of thumb, your rug should fit the size of your seating area, ideally with the front legs of the furniture sitting on the rug. It’s also important to consider practicalities such as how much foot traffic your rug will have and whether it will be prone to spills and stains.” Q

his couple’s end goal for their renovation was a home with a clean design that comprised a lot of straight lines and a limited colour palette. They were responsible for the interior design and project management for this revamp. Opting to manage the project themselves meant they had total control of everything, but it also meant they were living on the property while the renovation was taking place. “The biggest challenge of all had to be the fact that we together with our two dogs and two cats all lived on the property throughout the entire process. Though a massive money saver, it is not something we would rush into doing again, nor would we recommend it to anyone,” she says. One was the importance of getting an engineer involved. “An engineer is crucial, especially when looking at knocking down nearly all the internal walls of the original house to create a massive open-plan space. Our engineer also advised us to replace the entire structure of the internal roofing as the original roof was not meant to last as long as it had, which was a large expense we weren’t expecting.” However through it all, there is nothing that can compare to coming home to a house that was born out of a labour of love. TOP THREE TIPS: 1. Move out of the property for the duration of the project. Remove all valuable items and place them in storage. 2. Choose a contractor you feel comfortable with. A good relationship is vital for a project to be successful and enjoyable. 3. Be informed about the cost of the renovation and be prepared for possible unforeseen costs associated with it. Unlike new builds where costs can be accurately calculated, renovations can have a lot of unforeseen costs.

A checklist for a successful renovation: • Establish the scope of works (with an architect). • Establish a budget. • Find a competent contractor, preferably with contactable references. • Establish realistic timelines with the builder. • Ensure good communication between all parties involved. • Any variations to the original scope of work should be clearly communicated in writing. • Regular site meetings should be held to track the progress and plan.

Practical add-ins: “A useful addition to irrigation and sprinkler systems, rain sensors can be fitted to most modern controllers. Seasonal-adjust settings (on the controller) can also be used to automatically reduce watering frequency during colder months when plants may become dormant,” says Ryan Ebedes of Grounded Landscapes. According to Tone Alexander of Tone Alexander Landscape and Design Studio, water node systems that use solenoid valves are another viable option. “These designs are battery-operated, instead of using a computer system,” he explains. Going online: According to Alexander, investing in high-quality computerised irrigation and sprinkler systems presents a techsavvy solution to becoming a water-saving advocate. Ebedes agrees. “New high-end controllers with Wi-Fi connectivity give home owners total control of their water usage,” he explains.
SAGE ADVICE While there’s a range of sprinkler and irrigation options on the market – from cone sprayers, rotary nozzles, rotor (gear-drive) and impact sprayers, to micros and drip irrigation – water saving
SMART IRRIGATION Now irrigation controllers can be managed from anywhere in the world using smart devices or product-specific cloud software. should be top of mind. “With water restrictions in place, drip irrigations systems are the best option. They are more effective and focus on watering the roots of the plants,” says Alexander. “As emitters are designed to apply water directly to the rootzone of each plant, it reduces the risk of evaporation and the effects of wind,” explains Ebedes. While drip irrigation is the most efficient watering solution, it’s usually not practical for large spaces. “Instead, use rotary nozzles to cover larger areas. Due to their lower precipitation rates, they help avoid saturation and run-off,” advises Ebedes. Q
“The recent spate of water restrictions across South Africa is a stern reminder that water is a scarce and finite commodity.”

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Water wisely: Auto-time your irrigation system according to level-one water restrictions. These stipulate that you can’t water your garden between 6am and 6pm. Designer insight: Before installing a new irrigation system, first test your home’s pressure and flow. Select your sprinklers/ irrigation and zone layouts accordingly. Using head-to-head principles helps to avoid dry spots or over-watering certain areas. Don’t overwater: In terms of frequency, established gardens should be watered every second day, unless the situation warrants a different schedule. Source: Lasher, Grounded Landscapes

rime is rife in South Africa, and around the world accidents can and do happen in the house. As an adult you’re usually prepared, but how do we extend protection to the 20-million or so children in our country? Luckily the miniaturisation and dropping cost of DIY and home camera technology means your off-the-shelf Wi-Fienabled security camera can double as an anxiety-reducing nanny cam, or simply another safeguard in your arsenal, geared at keeping the whole family safe and secure.
DUAL PURPOSE “When speaking about camera systems most home owners will instinctively relate the need for cameras as a deterrent to home intrusion,” says Homemation’s Warren Husband. “The reality is that cameras are useful for much more than just intrusion. Well-placed cameras are useful for keeping an eye on the kids playing in the back garden,
near a pool area, or perhaps making sure that they are not talking to any strangers at the front gate.” There are two tactics, which can be used in tandem, he explains: visible cameras that act as a deterrent, and “cleverly concealed cameras” for when people don’t know they are being watched.
TAKE ACTION Additionally, Husband says, it is “almost equally important to be able to access and view the cameras off-site in real time” and even to have other systems in the home integrated into the camera system by means of a good automation system. “This could allow the home to respond automatically to predefined triggers,” he says. These automated actions include things like turning the lights on, pausing movies and music, or displaying the camera feed.
“There are two tactics, which can be used in tandem – visible cameras that act as a deterrent, and cleverly concealed cameras.” – Warren Husband
Yale’s internet protocol (IP) cameras are ideal for these kinds of uses, explains Yale’s Smart Living product and business development manager Clint Jones. “It has a built-in two-way audio,” Jones says. “This allows parents to not only check up on little ones remotely using the Yale VIEW app on their smart phones, but parents can now talk to and have a conversation with their kids or nanny.” The Yale VIEW app is available for free download from iOS and Android app stores. And the camera setup is a cinch with the app taking you through the process step by step. The latest version of the Yale camera also connects to other security products in the Yale Smart Living family, such as digital video recorders and Smart Alarm, and it works with Alexa and Google Assistant. PUSH THE BUTTON We don’t want to teach our kids to live in fear, but we also have a duty to educate and prepare them, especially in a country with the regrettable crime concerns that South Africa faces. Namola is an app that connects people to emergency services – a panic button of sorts – and it’s so simple that it’s ideal for kids. The app is free to download for Huawei, iOS and Android users. The free version connects you to public emergency medical services (EMS). Namola Plus costs R49/month and comes with the added benefit of connecting you with an armed response team and private emergency medical services as needed.

SAFETY TIP: The internet is full of tips and tricks to aid parents and keep kids safe. These tend to be age-specific, but a good universal rule of thumb to teach your kids is that adults don’t need help from kids. An adult with a real emergency will seek another adult. So make sure your kids know that if there is an adult asking them for help by entering the home or going somewhere with them, they must just say no. MARCH 2020 187

for appliances with “eco mode” or an excellent energy rating. Several brands are incorporating eco-friendly into their core mission, like Bosch who boasts that 40% of its patent applications “relate to environmental protection and the careful use of resources”. They’ve also reduced the water consumption of their appliances by half since 1990. Defy, too, is proud of its A+++-rated front loader washing machines. Hirsch’s has a section on its site, https://blog.hirschs.co.za/2019/09/20/ eco-friendly-appliances/, to help customers find their top 10-rated eco-friendly appliances, like the Siemens 14Pl dishwasher that has an energy consumption of just 237kWh per year, based on 280 standard cleaning cycles (in eco mode). Allan Hirsch, CEO of the Hirsch Group, says there are various ways that its suppliers are going greener. “Let’s take refrigeration for instance,” says Hirsch. “They are increasing the density of the insulation, reducing the leakage of coldness. There has also been improvement in the [motor] efficiency, and they now tend to use less electricity.” Regarding laundry, he says, suppliers have “improved the [motor] efficiency so it t use as much energy. e also reduced the evels, and they’ve ntroduced censors that sense the amount of soap powder, preventing wastage. COOL COMPOSTABLES Disposable cutlery and crockery are a marvellous invention for convenience, but they contribute hugely to landfills and urban garbage. Checkers now offers a smart compostable collection of cutlery, cups and plates – under their Simple Truth Range – that look like “proper” plastic and laminated paper items, but break down much quicker and with fewer nasty by-products. This range also includes pantry and cupboard staples like almond milk or multipurpose cleaner.

It was founded in 2006, so has 14 successful years under its belt – a proven track record. Here you can pick up anything from bamboo backpacks to reusable straws, baby goods, home décor, and foodstuffs. Good for the body and mind, health and conscience.
SIMPLE SWAPS Small changes add up, without breaking the bank or requiring huge lifestyle changes. With an increased focus on the need to offer environmentally friendly options, more loved and trusted household brands are extending their ranges or “upgrading” them to gentler options. Sunlight for example has a new “Sunlight Extra Nature” dishwashing liquid that uses gentler, natural ingredients like aloe and salt, and each bottle contains up to 50% recycled material.

According to the South African Department of Environmental Affairs, South Africa produces roughly 98 million tons of waste per year, and Statistics South Africa says 90% of this ends upon rubbish dumps and landfills instead of recycling centres. MARCH 2020 191

P
ink is a fun and playful colour to incorporate into your home. It comes in a wide variety of hues and depending on your personal preferences, can present itself in a multitude of incarnations. No two pinks are the same and we love it for its ability to be sophisticated and yet not overly serious, energising as well as calming. Twenty-first-century pink is a serious contender when decorating your home.

Pink is no longer seen as a feminine colour, as long as it’s used as an accent colour, rather than a theme. Pink is said to have a calming effect and tones in well with the current floral trends, as well as browns and greys. Dusty pinks can be used as a neutral, which makes pink items suitable for any room. – Casarredo Reflections Refl ections Copenhagen South Beach, Casarredo

Soft, non-threatening with a hundred different shades and counting, pink presents itself in nature as a spiritual colour, a colour of love, new beginnings and spring, inheriting its name from the flower called pink, or as we now know it, Dianthus. The positive, happy energy of pink has gained popularity in the décor and fashion world and is here to stay. Wonderfully easy to use, shades are being developed by designers and paint companies every year, making it the go-to colour for backdrops and accents. Its message of abundance, peace and friendship is welcome in any home or office. Key furniture pieces, throws and wallpapers are also a great way to introduce pink into the room, balancing it with deep blues, greys and greens, which give pink strength and class. – Here & Elsewhere 192 MARCH 2020

The use of pink in décor has become almost as common as the LBD in fashion. It’s a staple. And pink in wallpaper is no different. Whether it is a fully pink-inspired wallpaper or one with just hints of the hue, so many designs incorporate the colour.
