Not all snacks are completely ‘bad’. Here are four nutrition numbers hat can help you to classify a th nack as ‘healthy’… sn •L Less than 600 kilojoules per serve. •L Less than three grams of saturated fat per serve. •L Less than 200 milligrams of sodium (salt) per serve. •L Less than 15 grams of sugars per serve. Plus, if they’re wholegrain or hiigh-fibre or supply important nu utrients such as calcium, iron orr protein, that’s a bonus.
TIME TO DITCH THE DOUGHNUTS? T Two cinnamon doughnuts pile on 20 grams of fat and over 2000 kilojoules, k which is one third of the day’s recommended intake for the average sedentary woman. And most of that fat is industrial fat, the type that clogs arteries and thickens your waistline.

And they’re sweet enough to satisfy. •OPT FOR NUT BREADS AND BANANA BREADS, but ask for no spread. Often these breads – which are more like cakes – are tasty enough without added butter. •TRY A MUESLI SLICE instead of a slice of cake. A good source of wholegrains and dried fruit, these slices fill you up and have some nutritional benefits – but be careful, there are hidden sugars added to ‘glue’ the grains and nuts together. •TRY A WHOLEMEAL MUFFIN. They have a slightly higher fibre content, but you still need to watch portion sizes. Fruit muffins such as blueberry or raspberry muffins are a healthier choice than the chocolate ones. •NOT REALLY HUNGRY, BUT CRAVING SOMETHING SWEET? Try a sweeter coffee like a caramel or hazelnut blend, which has fewer kilojoules than a big muffin. •DON’T FALL FOR THE COFFEE AND CAKE DISCOUNT! It looks like a good deal – $5 for a coffee and a slice of cake when the coffee alone costs $4 – but remember, you’re not saving money. If you only wanted a coffee, then you’re spending more than you intended and that cake is going straight to your hips. 45

one are the days when we had to slog away for 60 minutes a day to get results. Scientifically devised for the Japanese Olympic speed skating team no less, Tabata bata is now big news around the world d – and with four-minute sessions, we can totally see why. Exercise scientist Brooke Turner from Balance Fitness ‘Consistency is and Nutrition key,’ Brooke gives us the advises lowdown…
WHAT IS TABATA TRAINING? Tabata training was discovered by a Japanese scientist, Dr Izumi Tabata, and a team of researchers from the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo. Each exercise in a Tabata workout lasts only four minutes, but at the time it will feel a lot longer! It goes like this: •Work at maximum effort for 20 seconds. •Rest for 10 seconds (this is one set). •Complete eight sets (four minutes total). All up, you’ll complete eight sets of each exercise and you can do almost any exercise that you wish – using body weight or equipment. The Tabata training method works due to its high-intensity nature – it falls into the HIIT workout category. That means it can help you burn more calories in a shorter period while also providing an 46 WWW.OKMAGAZINE.COM.AU
‘after-burn’ effect known as EPOC (excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption), meaning you continue to burn energy after the workout is over.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS?
T Tabata is a great form of exercise for tthose who are time-poor or prefer shorter ssessions at a higher intensity – or if you jjust want to spend more time living and lless time training. It’s good for your mental and emotional wellbeing. It also iimproves athletic performance and g glucose metabolism, acts as an excellent ccatalyst for fat burning, and is the perfect way to shake up your workouts iif you have reached a plateau in your weight-loss or fitness program.
IS FOUR MINUTES ALL YOU NEED? Not necessarily. While eight sets and four minutes of all-out effort may be more than enough for some, if you have time on your hands and want to get in a longer workout, complete a few blocks to take it anywhere from a 12 to 30-minute workout. At the end of the day, consistency is key. I would recommend incorporating HIIT-style training, such as Tabata, two or three times per week in conjunction with other forms of daily movement and a healthy, balanced diet for maximal results. Find ways to move that are enjoyable and sustainable, then you’re more likely to be successful in your health, aesthetic and performance goals.
HOW CAN I FIND TABATA WORKOUTS?
With a simple Google or hashtag search for Tabata workouts, you’ll have them handy at your fingertips. But it’s also easy to make up your own! This is one of my favourite ways to train when I’m short on time, or don’t have anything planned for my training session. Pretty much any movement or equipment can be used – be it body weight, dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, treadmills, rowers… you name it!
HOW HARD IS IT? Anyone can try Tabata workouts – that is what makes this method of training so great. While it’s high intensity, it doesn’t have to be high impact – which is good news for those who may have a knee or leg injury, or are coming back to exercise following a pregnancy. Tabata is also great if you’re short on time and want to do a quick workout, you neeed d to switch up your routine, or you want to improve endurance and speed. Whether you’re an elite athlete or recreational warrior, the intensity level at which you work will be relative to your personal fitness level.

If you’d prefer a longer workout, take a two-minute rest after the first round, then repeat two or three more times.
TRY THIS WORKOUT DO THESE EXERCISES ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
AIR SQUATS Take your feet a little wider than your hips and turn your toes slightly out. Keep your chest up and push your hips back and down. Press into your heels and imagine lifting your toes. Lower your hips to parallel or what’s comfortable, then drive through the heels and glutes to extend back up.
BURPEES From a standing position, squat down with your hands on the floor. Step or jump back into a plank, lowering your knees, hips then chest in one smooth movement onto the floor. Push up through your arms lifting your chest, hips and legs off the floor. Step or jump both feet to your hands and stand up.
PUSH-UPS CARRIE UNDERWOOD
Start with your hands under your shoulders and bend your elbows to lower your chest towards the floor. Keeping your elbows close to your body, drive through the heels of your hands and push away from the floor to full extension, then repeat.
V-SITS In a seated position, engage your core and slowly lift your legs (knees are bent or straight) to a 45degree angle with your torso. Reach forward as you keep leaning back, maintaining a strong spine.

YOUR NUNCHI! Got a case of foot in mouth? Brush up on your social skills with this ancient Korean art
W
hen it comes to the tricky world of social interactions, have you ever noticed that some people just get it? They’re the ones who always seem to know exactly what to say even in the most awkward moments, and at dinner parties they’ll top up your wine glass before you’ve even realised it’s empty. They may not realise it, but they probably have excellent nunchi.
Pronounced ‘noon-chi’, it stems from Korean culture and is the art of sensing what the people around you are thinking and feeling in order to create trust and harmony. This helps to avoid sticky situations, from work to social events and even relationships. Euny Hong, academic and author of The Power of Nunchi: The Korean Secret to Happiness and Success, takes us through how we can practise nunchi and the benefits that come with it.
THE BASICS ‘For beginners, I recommend honing nunchi skills at work before trying it on friends or family,’ says Euny. ‘At your next work meeting, rather than being the loudest voice in the room, observe instead. First things first: who exactly in the room? Is e atmosphere Jennie from Blackpink ht or heavy? mentions oes your boss nunchi in the K-pop hit ok like he has Ddu-Du ad news? the situation and understanding that every room and workplace is different.’ Once you get better at reading a room, you can influence and change the mood. If you’re running a meeting, Euny suggests offering bite-size treats at the start – even just some mini chocolates. ‘Say (but don’t yell), “Hi there everyone, I brought [food item],”’ she explains. ‘Make sure you use the word “everyone”, which sets the tone that for as long as you’re in that conference room, you are one organism.’ Ask people to pass the snacks around rather than simply telling everyone to ‘help themselves’. The passing motion creates connection. ‘It’s a way of making people pay attention to others,’ says Euny. ‘This energy circle you’ve created is a powerful, unifying force that will make everyone cooperate better, be more interested in what everyone has to say, and increase the chance of attaining any goals from that meeting.’
GAME OF NUNCHI ‘Game of Thrones could also be called Game of Nunchi,’ Euny writes. While some characters like Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) begin the TV series with excellent nunchi, others like Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner, pictured) are forced to sharpen their skills to survive.
Having the ability to pick up on moods and behaviours before approaching people will save you – and the other person – from social embarrassment. ‘You can’t make a faux pas if you’ve read the room correctly,’ says Euny. ‘It also aids in reducing your social anxiety – such anxiety is often caused because you are focusing too much on yourself. This can be dissipated at least a little if you focus on plugging into your environment, and on everyone else in the room.’ Nunchi is also great for navigating romantic relationships. ‘People are terrible at expressing their real thoughts [in relationships],’ shares Euny. ‘This is because at tense moments like a fight, they feel vulnerable and worried their other half will take advantage of their weakness. Use your nunchi to sense what is behind their words. ‘If you keep having the same fight over again, it’s almost always because of something someone was afraid to say or didn’t know how to. Do something different. Read between the lines.’

BREAKFAST GLOW PLATE INGREDIENTS
•1½ cups pearl barley •1 beetroot, peeled, chopped finely •700g Kent pumpkin, unpeeled, cut into thin wedges •2 garlic cloves, crushed •⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil •200g kale (see tip) •4 eggs
TIP
You'll need about half a bunch of kale for this recipe. You can reserve the trimmed kale stalks to add to stir-fries and soups.
AVOCADO-YOGHURT DRESSING
•¾ cup kefir yoghurt or
Greek-style yoghurt •1 small avocado, chopped coarsely •2 tbsp fresh dill tips •2 tbsp fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves •1 green onion, chopped finely •2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
METHOD
1 Preheat oven to 200°C. Line two large oven trays with baking paper. 2 Place pearl barley, beetroot and 4½ cups water in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low, cook, covered, for 35 minutes or until barley is tender. Drain barley and beetroot mixture. 3 Place pumpkin, 1 garlic clove and 2 tbsp of oil in a large bowl. Season and toss to coat. Spread pumpkin over one tray. Roast for 15 minutes. 4 Separate kale leaves from stalks. Place kale leaves, remaining garlic and 1 tbsp of oil in a bowl. Season and toss to coat. Spread kale over remaining tray. Roast in oven with pumpkin for a further 20 minutes, or until kale is crisp and pumpkin is tender and lightly browned. 5 Make avocado-yoghurt dressing. 6 Heat remaining oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Fry eggs for 2 minutes or until cooked. 7 Divide barley mixture, pumpkin, kale and eggs among plates. Season. Serve with avocado-yoghurt dressing.
AVOCADO-YOGHURT DRESSING Process or blend ingredients until smooth. Season to taste.

•1 bunch green kale, torn into 4cm pieces, discard stalks •3 green onions, chopped coarsely •180g daikon, sliced thinly •1 tbsp sea salt flakes •2 tsp sesame oil •4 cups water •2 garlic cloves, crushed •1 tbsp caster sugar •1 tbsp fish sauce •2 tsp finely grated fresh ginger •2 tbsp gochujang (Korean red chilli paste)
Squeeze out excess water. Combine kale and paste in a bowl. 4 Transfer to sterilised jars. Press down on mixture so liquid rises to the top to cover vegetables. Seal. Refrigerate for 1 day before using. Keep refrigerated for up to 1 week. Remove with a clean spoon.

Nutritional yeast is a vegan substitute for parmesan cheese.

METHOD
1 Preheat oven to 220°C. Grease and line two large oven trays. 2 Whisk yoghurt and lemon juice together in
a small bowl. 3 Mix nutritional yeast, turmeric, paprika, garlic powder, chickpea flour and salt in a small bowl until well combined. Season with pepper. Transfer 1 tsp to a small bowl and reserve. 4 Place cauliflower in a large bowl. Pour over yoghurt mixture. Toss to coat. Add spice mix. Toss until florets are evenly coated. Spread evenly across both lined trays. 5 Bake, rotating trays and stirring florets halfway through cooking, for 50 minutes or until florets are crisp and dry. Cool slightly before serving. Dust with reserved spice mixture. 51

After breakfast at Madame Chau restaurant, I head straight for the onsen and spa for a soak and soothe session. The massages here are to die for! Being relaxed sure works up an appetite, so go to Alba’s onsite farm to refuel with a hotpot meal under the stars. If you’re feeling adventurous, follow it up with a midnight dip in the magma-heated hot springs. The private bungalows are beautifully designed with a blend of Vietnamese and Japanese architecture – mine comes with an outdoor shower and vegie garden! There’s also a bike parked outside for cycling around the organic farm and taking in the fresh air of the hot springs.

LAGUNA LANG CO
My final destination is a new resort community from the Banyan Tree Group, an hour from Da Nang Airport. The villas at Laguna Lang Co are breathtaking, with lagoon views, private pools and outdoor showers. As an indulgence, I spend my final night at neighbouring Angsana Lang Co, only a few minutes’ boat transfer from Banyan Tree. Angsana offers a great selection of outdoor activities for thrillseekers, such as jetskiing and wakeboarding. However, for the chill-seekers there’s a lazy dip in the 300-metre long serpentine pool and a cocktail at the bar also on offer! I have time for lunch at Moomba, Angsana’s alfresco dining venue, but then sadly have to pack my bags to head home. I’ve honestly never felt so relaxed and rejuvenated. Fingers crossed the kids survived the week without me! The resort is situated right by the golden beach…

eith Urban and Nicole Kidman are one of the most successful couples in showbiz – and they have the real estate portfolio to prove it! Aside from maintaining two homes in their native Australia (one in Sydney, the other in Bunya Hill), the spouses of 13 years own three US properties: a Nashville mansion (their primary residence), a New York apartment and this 3977-square-foot Beverly Hills pad. ess than two months have passed since Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan announced their plans to step back from their royal engagements and embark on a new life in Canada with their nine-month-old son Archie. And on the surface, all seems well. But insiders have revealed Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, have become even more estranged from his family – including his older brother Prince William and grandmother Queen Elizabeth II. ‘Harry’s barely spoken to them,’ one source says. ‘He’s been dodging their calls. Some people close to Meghan and Harry are saying they’re living in their own bubble and don’t want any reminders of the past.’ According to sources, Meghan and Harry are beyond relieved to be free of the constraints of royal life. ‘They’re finally living their lives on their own terms, and that’s given them a whole new purpose and a wonderful sense of liberation and peace,’ says the insider. They’ve been settling into a private seaside compound in the Saanich Inlet area of Vancouver Island with Archie and their dogs while they househunt for permanent digs. ‘Harry and Meghan escaped the chaos back home and are genuinely happy,’ says the source. ‘They’re really enjoying Canada; it’s a completely different world from what they’re used to in London.’ They can go on hikes or pop into the grocery store in town without being harassed. ‘The locals don’t bother them, and they have the freedom to do whatever they want.’ The insider adds that ‘Meghan endured a lot of stress in England’, particularly at the
