BELFAST CITY COUNCIL has heard that BT had been selected as the provider for the move that will include City Hall, Waterfront Hall, Ulster Hall, St George’s Market, Belfast Castle and Malone House. A further 113 venues will go live by the end of March including community centres, leisure centres, sports pavilions, Belfast Zoo and Smithfield Market.Other highlights of the council’s capital programme include the new Adventurers Learning Centre at the zoo and a new pavilion at Suffolk playing fields. Tenders have also been awarded for new pavilions at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon and Waterworks Parks as part of a £15m pitches strategy. Work will also begin this year on the installation of 30 docking stations in the city centre for a public bike sharing scheme. CASTLEREAGH BOROUGH COUNCIL’S Good Relations programme marked the 70th anniversary of Holocaust Memorial Day with a public event on Tuesday 27th January 2015 at the Council Civic Centre. Holocaust Memorial Day urges everyone to reflect on what can happen when racism, prejudice and exclusionary behaviour are unchallenged and how lessons from the past can play a part in our communities today. The date marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau as well as the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia.

A new Local Area Planning Office opened on 19 January 2015 which will see Lisburn people having planners on their doorstep for the first time. At present DOE Planning for the Lisburn and Castlereagh areas operates from Rathkeltair House, Downpatrick and Bedford House, Belfast. Experienced Planners from DOE Area Planning Team will now relocate to Lagan Valley Island, the headquarters building for Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council. From there they will work alongside future council colleagues while ensuring a normal planning service is maintained for the area covered by the new council. This marks another important step in the preparation for the transfer of planning to councils on 1 April 2015.

RECORD TONNAGES ‘BULKED UP’ AT BELFAST HARBOUR Trade figures released by Belfast Harbour show that it handled a record 23 million tonnes during 2014, up 46% since the recession’s low point in 2009. Overall tonnages rose by 1.6%, driven by strong growth in bulk cargo which accounts for over 40% of throughput at the Harbour. Trade sectors which grew particularly well included stone exports (18%), industrial and domestic coal (20%), paper products (33%) and steel (38%). A record 476,000 freight vehicles also passed through the Harbour during 2014 (up over 2%), while container traffic improved by 2.9% to 125,000 units. The level of new car imports also rose by 10% to 48,000, its highest level since 2007. The Harbour’s animal feed sector performed well, rising 3.3% to a record 2.2 million tonnes, while scrap exports rose 14% to a record 373,000 tonnes. Cement tonnages also improved, increasing fivefold to 79,000 tonnes. This was, however, from a small base and total cement tonnages remain less than one third of pre-recession levels. Ferry passenger numbers remained steady during 2014 at 1.4m while cruise

‘Shock’ at Executive’s £90,000 bill for graffiti
AN EXPLOSION of graffiti across North Down, including Holywood, has cost the Housing Executive almost £90,000 in the past two years alone, it has emerged this week. The housing body has had to spend the five figure sum on removing graffiti from its property in the various estates it is responsible for across the borough. While much of the graffiti can be put down to common vandalism, some of it has also contained sinister threats against named individuals and to express support for or opposition to various paramilitary groups. Local DUP MLA Alex Easton MLA has expressed his ‘shock’ at the mounting cost of the graffiti, which emerged in response to a question he put to Department of Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey, at Stormont. It was revealed that during the financial year 2012 to 2013 the Executive spent £43,267.15 on graffiti removal around the borough and during the year 2013 to 2014 this rose to £45,080.23. Mr Easton said he was ‘deeply shocked’ to discover that the Executive had spent over £88,000 on removing graffiti from its properties across North Down over the last two financial years. He added, “At a time when departments are struggling to find money with cutbacks, the last thing the Housing Executive needs to be doing is having to waste money removing graffiti put there by silly individuals who are costing the ratepayers of North Down a lot of money.

JOBS BOOST FOR SHIPYARD WITH ARRIVAL OF MONSTER OIL RIG The jobs boost created by the refurbishment and refit of a monster oil rig in Belfast has been warmly welcomed by local councillors. Weighing in at more than 11,000 tons, the Byford Dolphin could create up to 1,000 contracted jobs at Harland & Wolff for workers with the appropriate skills. yard last year. The 355ft Byford Dolphin was originally built in 1974 and is owned by Aberdeen-based Dolphin Drilling. It can drill down to around 6,000 metres and can operate in water as deep as 460 metres. Its owner is one of the longest-established companies of its kind. The rig’s arrival in the shipyard had been delayed for several days due to adverse weather. It was eventually guided along Belfast Lough by tug boats after waiting at the mouth of the lough. The same rig previously visited Belfast for repair work back in 2004.

Healthy options? Check what food is going to be provided and also whether any of the snacks are healthy options.

CHECK

Look over documentation Make sure the childminder has adequate insurance cover – ask to see his or her insurance certificates.
Plans for the days Find out about the daily routine followed by the childminder, the activities he/she provides, and any outings or trips.

Sign on the dotted line Once you’ve selected your childminder, ensure you sign a contract with him or her – it provides a vital safeguard for you both.

OUR RESIDENT HISTORIAN AIDAN CAMPBELL TAKES A STROLL ALONG THE KNOCK ROAD THAT TAKES HIM BACK THROUGH TIME TO THE STORY OF BEACONSFIELD

As I was walking along Knock Road one day, near the Comber Greenway, I noticed that the builders had demolished a derelict large house called ‘The Orchard’. It was on an expansive site, surrounded by large trees (which have also gone) just next to Knockcastle Park and they are now building several new houses on the site.

EAST BELFAST EDITION #1 / FEBRUARY 2015
o Local Football ALAN HALL’S
LOCAL FOOTBALL ROUND UP
CLIFTONVILLE 1 • GLENTORAN 1
BALLYWALTER REC 2 • SIROCCO WORKS 3
A SUPERB piece of last gasp opportunism from in demand starlet Jordan Stewart gave Glentoran a well deserved point from Saturday’s Danske Premiership tussle with Cliftonville at Solitude, ensuring the EastEnders remain in fifth, just three points behind the reigning champions. Reds skipper George McMullan was perhaps relieved to see yellow and not red for a challenge from behind on Jordan Stewart. Then on four minutes, Barry Holland’s name was noted for a cynical challenge on Jude Winchester. Thankfully things cooled down a little after that frantic opening and in the opening quarter there was little between the sides; Martin Donnelly, Cliftonville’s match winner in the League Cup Final a week earlier, dancing in field only to shoot straight at keeper Elliott Morris at the near post. It was Cliftonville, without a league win since mid December, who took the lead on 19 minutes; the prolific Joe Gormley chasing onto Donnelly’s searching pass and while Morris darted off his line, the striker got their first, grabbing his 32nd goal of the season with a delightful first time lob. Glentoran could have cancelled that out when Stewart nodded a Niall Henderson corner down for Danny McKee, whose point blank effort was blocked by Ronan Scannell. The Glens upped the pace in the second session; Holland crossing for McKee, whose header was tipped over by home keeper Cherrie. Stephen Gordon, too, came even closer but Cherrie saved well with his feet. Cliftonville, nonetheless, could have stitched it all up when Gormley again got round the wrong side of the visitors defence but Morris stood up well, making the save. Sean McCarron, off the bench for his Reds debut, almost made an immediate impact but Morris was again alert to the danger, flinging himself to his left to make the save. Martin Donnelly, too, hoisted a left foot effort over the bar when he might have done better. Meanwhile, Eddie Patterson rang the changes, bringing Curtis Allen and Fra McCaffrey off the bench, with Allen coming close to making his mark with a left foot drive that zipped just the wrong side of the far upright. The Glens were now building up a head of steam and Cliftonville had Cherrie to thank, after McKee got onto the end of Johnny Addis’s long throw. However, Glentoran weren’t to be denied, when , right on the 90, Stewart, back from a loan spell at Middlesborough, showed just why he is in demand, dinking the ball over the defender before prodding it wide of the helpless Cherrie. Glentoran; Morris, Kane, Burney, Scullion (McCaffrey), Stewart, Henderson (Nelson), McAlorum, Addis, Gordon (Allen), McKee, Holland. Subs (unused), McCullough, Hogg.
A DRAMATIC injury time strike from Kurtis Hanna takes Sirocco Works out of the 1b drop zone after Saturday’s ‘six pointer’ against Ballywalter Rec at Davidson Park. Ballywalter are now in the bottom two, two points and two places beneath Sirocco who have also three games in hand. There is another crunch game next Saturday, when Sirocco entertain bottom club Dunmurry Young Men. While Sirocco had the wind at their backs in the opening half, it was Ballywalter who drew first blood on 20 minutes. Back though, came Sirocco right on half time, with Nathan Jamison, grandson of Glentoran legend Johnny ‘Stumpy’, scoring direct from a corner. After the turnaround, Sirocco were largely hemmed in their own half, as Rec made better use of the elements and it was no surprise when the home side regained the lead, first to react after the initial attempt had careered off the crossbar. That looked to be that, though Sirocco had a plausible penalty appeal turned down before Ian Mannus hammered in an equaliser ten minutes from time. Things, too, were going to get even better when Kurtis Hanna scored that injury time winner, cutting in from the left before rifling the ball into the far corner of the net. Sirocco Works; Reid, Bridgenhal, Jamison, M Graham, Cassidy, Stewart, Hanna, Mannus, Forsythe, Lyons (Frame), Acheson (A Graham). Sub (unused) Johnston. Sirocco Seconds lost 3-4 to Grove United Seconds at Tullycarnet. Gareth Rainey, Sam Branston, and Wayne Boyce were their marksmen.
EAST BELFAST 5 • MALACHIANS 6 (after extra time & penalties)
EAST Belfast crashed out of the Clarence Cup, unluckily losing 3-4 on penalties, after Saturday’s clash with Premier Division side Malachians at a bitterly cold East Park ended up at two a-piece at the end of extra time. There was perhaps a sign of things to come after just six minutes when Luke Wilson went down inside the box. Referee Ian Banks pointed to the spot but David Wright’s spot kick was saved, comfortably enough, by keeper Magill. East were certainly the better side but were out of luck when they struck post and then bar in the same goalmouth scramble as Mals struggled to clear their defensive lines. On 32 minutes, Malachians had their first pot on goal, East netminder Jake Halliday doing well to keep out a rasping effort from Kelly. It was the North Belfast side, too, who snatched the lead against the run of play two minutes from the break; Hawkins heading in McAtee’s right wing corner. That goal seemed to spark the visitors into life and they almost increased their lead, with
EAST’S LUKE WILSON GOES DOWN IN THE BOX a Kelly volley that whistled just over. East almost bounced back just after the turnaround when they were awarded a free kick on the six yard line after what Mr Banks classed as a deliberate back pass. Malachians managed to survive that one though it was no surprise whatsoever when East levelled matters on the hour; the EastEnders’ best player Stephen Garrett leaving three defenders in his wake before drilling a sweet left foot drive into the bottom corner of the net. And so into extra time where East Belfast forged ahead for the first time, with Wright arching a header over the advancing Magill. East could have confirmed their place in the next round had Davison’s chip not thudded off the bar with keeper Magill beaten. Instead, it was Malachians who provided the sting in the tail drawing level five minutes from the end of extra time when Downey volleyed in at the far post. And so into the dreaded shoot out where Malachians keeper Magill was the hero, saving the fifth penalty at match point for the home side, and then taking scoring Mals fifth kick. It thus went into sudden death where East blazed theirs wide and Malachians scored, to earn a quarter final trip to Crumlin United.
BANGOR 3 • DUNDELA 1 THERE was no shock result as Championship 1’s top and bottom clubs locked horns on Saturday at the Bangor Fuels Arena, Bangor coming out 3-1 winners, and, with PSNI drawing at home to Armagh City, it means that Dundela are now four points adrift at the foot of the table. However, as assistant manager Paul Foy reflected afterwards, “We’ve got some of the teams just above us in the next few weeks so those matches will be crucial and the players we’ve picked up on loan from Linfield, like PJ Murray and Dale Patton, signed on Friday, should help us. It’s a very young team now,
but sometimes I think that’s the better way to go. Here, if we had held onto one-nil at half time, we would have had a chance in the second half, but it was two defensive mistakes that cost us. Then we needed to score first in the second half, but we didn’t do it!” Bangor had the breeze at their backs in the opening session, and new Dundela keeper Macauley Cairns, on loan from Ballymena United, did well to push Andy Hall’s swerving effort over the bar. Cairns distinguished himself again with further saves to defy Hall and Paul McDowell, while, at the other end, the unmarked Stephen Gourley just failed to get enough on a header. It was Bangor, though, who broke the ice on 14 minutes, with Duns caught out by having nobody at the near post, allowing Richard Gibson to head in a Hall corner from just four yards. Meanwhile, in what turned out to be his Dundela swansong before making another return to his old haunt at Ballyclare Comrades, Andy Simms drove one just inches over the bar. Dundela were so close to going off just one goal down but just one minute from the break, Bangor nabbed a second, with McDowell first to react after the initial attempt had been blocked. The Seasiders went three up on 54 minutes; the Duns troubles starting when keeper Cairns was dispossessed trying to manoeuvre the ball onto his more favoured left foot. The East Belfast side couldn’t quite clear the danger and it was left for referee Stephen Gregg to point to the spot after David Gibson brought down his namesake Richard inside the box. McDowell tucked the resultant penalty into the bottom left hand corner of the net. There was some consolation for Dundela when another one of their loanees, Kyle Dillon from Crusaders, pulled one back three minutes from time. Dundela: Cairns, Thompson, Collins, Gibson, Keenan (73 Feher), Gourley, Jones (53 Jackson), Ferguson (58 West), Dillon, McClelland, Simms. Subs. not used: Halliday, Murphy.

o H&W WELDERS 3 • LOUGHGALL 0 HARLAND and Wolff Welders inch their way up to second slot in Championship 1, after Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Loughgall at Tillysburn Park. While the Welders were always comfortable, with keeper Michael Dougherty forced into just one save all afternoon, they made hard work of it at times thanks to a mixture of wayward finishing and in particular, some excellent goalkeeping from Loughgall’s new number 1, Symon Ferguson. With the strong wide at their backs, it was the Shipyardmen who launched the early attacks, though it was nine minutes before they had their first real pot on goal’; a free kick from midfield anchorman Craig Harris safely gathered by Loughgall keeper Ferguson. A minute later, it took a timely intervention from full back Mark Carson to prevent the unmarked Michael McClellan getting onto the end of Mark Magennis’s right wing cross. The Welders were now starting to spark into life but it was keeper Ferguson who showed his ‘mettle’ with a fine save to deprive Ryan Deans, while Scott Davidson rifled one just the wrong side of the left hand post. On 16 minutes, though, the Welders were in front, though it’s a goal that Ryan Deans won’t know much about as Mark Stewart’s clearance bounced in off his head; Ferguson having initially brought off an excellent save to foil McClellan. There may have been a slight suspicion of offside though the second last ‘defender’, the keeper must have been level
with goalscorer Deans. A minute later, Deans was almost on the scoresheet again, and had he gone down under a hefty challenge, Mr McIlwrath could well have been pointing to the spot, but the ex Carrick Ranger stayed on his feet, forcing Ferguson to save with his legs. The resultant corner, swung over by Magennis, saw what was surely one of the best saves Tillysburn will see all season. Meanwhile, Rainey’s radar wasn’t quite on cue, steering another shot wide, while Ferguson had to be vigilant again, to prevent Deans getting onto the end of Davidson’s right wing cross. Harland and Wolff were having their best period of the match, but still only had that one fortuitous goal to show for it, as Dean fizzed another one just wide. Loughgall’s first meaningful moment came on 38 minutes when Dougherty raced out of his box to prevent Warren Mullan fastening onto a Wesley Boyle pass. The Shipyardmen cruised further ahead on 43 minutes. A good advantage initially by the referee, after Magennis had been hauled back but Paul Dickson seemed to have overrun the ball before he went down rather easily under the challenge of Carson inside the box. While Ferguson guessed right and dived right, force overcame anticipation as McClellan slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner. On 56 minutes, man of the match Ferguson kept the Shipyardmen at bay, with a fine reflex save from Rainey, following a left wing corner from Magennis. Rainey, too, should have done better two minutes later, being crowded out
A FREE KICK FROM CRAIG HARRIS (NO 4) RUNS THROUGH TO KEEPER FERGUSON
after a fine interlink between Davidson and McClellan opened up the Loughgall defence. With the Irish Cup tie at home to Glenavon coming up this Saturday, manager Smyth was surely hoping for another goal to put this one to bed, but again the Welders were struggling to land the knock out blow; Magennis cracking one wide of Ferguson but also the wrong side of the left hand post. Loughgall flickered into life with a Ross Black free kick just over and then a nice turn and shot from Boyle which finally forced Dougherty into action, tipping the ball over the bar. The Welders came even closer on 75 minutes when Scott McMillan nodded a Magennis corner against the bar. Three minutes later, however, it was done and dusted; the goal of the match from McClellan, dinking the ball nicely over the helpless Ferguson, after a defensive clearance had
been hoofed back by Harris. Yet it still wasn’t quite working for Rainey as he screwed another opportunity wide of the post. It was his last real effort as he was replaced by Chris Middleton who would have made an instant impact but for another save from Ferguson. Fellow substitute Sammy Devine, too, almost marked his appearance only Ferguson made a well timed challenge outside his box. So comfortable enough then for the Welders and an important three points. Next Saturday, it’s back to Tillysburn for the Irish Cup visit of holders Glenavon which will be played to a finish. Kick off 1.30. H&W Welders; Dougherty – Dickson, McMurray, McMillan, W Armstrong – Magennis (Devine), Davidson, Deans, Harris – McClellan (M Armstrong), Rainey (Middleton). Subs (unused) Simpson, Beattie.
