A Step in Time: The Story of Irish Dance /// OPEN UNTIL SUNDAY 9 JANUARY 2016 The exhibition at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum charts the history of Irish Dance from the late 1800s to present day, through costume, embroidery, images and film. From the itinerant dance masters of the 1800s to today’s ‘masters of dance’ there is a rich and colourful story to be told. The exhibition is arranged in eight sections and tells the story of Irish Dance in almost 100 objects, ranging in date from a medieval brooch, to a contemporary diamante embroidered costume for solo competition. The exhibition includes reference to the 1904 Feis in the Glens of Antrim, a landmark event in Ulster’s recent cultural history, with competition in music, drama, craft work and dance. Embroidered costumes, medals and certificates will tell the story of the development of both dance schools and governing bodies for Irish Dance. The exhibition will display, for the first time, a selection from the museum’s collection of costume for the Patricia Mulholland Ballet. Patricia Mulholland was one of Ireland’s most talented choreographers, performers and teachers of Irish Dance, for almost 50 years from the late 1940s. The global phenomenon that was, and is, Riverdance will be interpreted in the gallery through dance costumes and film footage of the breath-taking 1994 Eurovision interval performance. nmni.com LOOPMAG.NET 5

A County Down artist is holding a special exhibition at the John Hewitt Bar in Belfast in aid of local charity Cancer Fund for Children. Since retiring from his role as Principal of Ballymagee Primary School four years ago, Edward Ferguson has been devoting more time to art. As a member of Seacourt, the Centre for Contemporary Printmaking, based in the Balloo Industrial Estate, Edward has been able to develop new skills and explore modern printmaking processes. The result can be seen as ‘Serendipity’ runs from Monday 2nd February to Saturday 28th at the John Hewitt Bar, 51 Donegall Street, Belfast. The proceeds of the sale of Edward’s limited edition prints will be donated to local children’s cancer charity, Cancer Fund for Children. The brain child of County Down husband and wife team Ron and Jennifer Kenna, Belfast-based pedal bike tour company Wee Toast Tours has officially launched its unique tour offering, enabling visitors to Belfast and locals see the thriving city on this unique attraction, never before seen in the UK or Ireland. It Kieran Bain, Belfast and Morgan Ellis, Bangor, enjoy a lunchtime ride on the Wee Toast Tours bike with owner Ron Kenna
has taken in excess of 2 years and an investment of £30,000 just to develop and get the bike on the streets of Belfast, but the company already has future
plans for expansion including additional bikes on Belfast’s streets and across Ireland in the next two years. In addition to an on-board barrel and tap, Wee Toast Tours’ massive 860kg 15-person pedal bike, uniquely built in and imported from The Netherlands, features stationary seats for each passenger as well as a set of foot pedals for each member of the party to contribute to the bike’s motion. The bike is steered by Ron, the designated driver, who also has control of the hydraulic brake. weetoasttours.com

U3A Has Come To Holywood /// Set up just over a year ago, Holywood District U3A now has more than a hundred enthusiastic members. About a dozen different pursuits are now undertaken by the membership, including creative writing, philosophy, art, gardening, walking, bowls and local history. Here, Robin Masefield, Convenor of/for the Local History Group looks at the local history group in particular.

CHAMPAGNE DEUTZ
Brut Classic
FEBRUARY: There are many events held and celebrated during February. The Super Bowl, LGBT History Month, World Marriage Day and of course Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day was traditionally celebrated in the UK by giving confectionary and cards. However as time has moved on traditions have changed and we now expect Bouquets of Flowers, Sumptuous Candle Lit Dinners and of course Champagne, the wine of love. So this month we’re going to talk about the virtues of the marvelous Champagne Deutz. The Morrell family and Champagne Deutz go back to the 1970s when Deutz was Morrell’s
private label Champagne. Now owned by Champagne Louis Roederer, this champagne is better than ever! On the nose, the first impressions are mellow and reminiscent of acacia flowers, confectionery, reinette apples and brioche. The voluminous wine has a silky, velvety structure which displays a harmonious balance between the freshness of the chardonnay, the fruity structure of the pinot noir and vinosity of petit meunier. This is very credible and serious Champagne for those with a discerning palate and exceptionally good taste. Available at Grange Wine Merchants from only £35.99

LOCAL SHOP WINS RETAILER OF THE YEAR! /// HEALTH FOOD STORE SCOOPS TOP AWARD Iona Shop, Holywood’s independent health food store has won the Your Healthy Living magazine retailer of the year award for Northern Ireland. Natural Lifestyle and sponsors A Vogel invited customers from all over the UK to vote for their favourite local health food store via post, online or in the store itself. Stores were then narrowed down to a shortlist per region with a regional winner being chosen by the judging panel. Judges deemed Iona a well deserved winner of the Northern Ireland region for many reasons, including their extensive range of stock (“an Aladdin’s cave of wonderful things”), the quality of their knowledge and advice, and
the very obvious connection they have to their local community. Remarkably this recognition comes as the owner Heidi Steffen celebrates 30 years in business in the town in 2015. Heidi says: “I am really pleased to have won this award as it represents recognition from our loyal customers. We aim to provide the best advice to help our customers make informed choices about their health and lifestyle. It is nice to know that they value what we do.” Heidi wins a 4 day trip to her native Switzerland courtesy of sponsors A Vogel herbal remedies. Why not pay Iona a visit and see for yourself exactly why they won this coveted award.
