Helen’s Bay Players present:
/// FULL CIRCLE BY JANET SHAW
Helen’s Bay Players have been going for over 50 years and the next production is on 26-28 March at St John’s Church Hall, Fort Road, Helen’s Bay. Millie and Dee have been at each other’s throats for twenty years and no-one knows why, but it is their granddaughter’s wedding and she and her parents are determined to get to the bottom of it to clear the air in time for the big day. However, more skeletons emerge from the closet and more questions than answers seem to be turning up; such as ‘Who is Gloria?’, ‘Where is Jack?’ and ‘Where does Dee go every year?’ In the midst of all this disasters strike the wedding plans so we also wonder ‘Will the marriage take place at all?’ An amusing but sad comedic drama that will have you reaching for the tissues - for tears of laughter as well as sorrow. Produced by Kevin Quinn. Starting at 8.00pm. Tickets available from Square Cut, Station Square, Helen’s Bay, or from North Down Tourist Information Centre. Telephone: 028 9127 0069; e-mail: tic@northdown.gov.uk. Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the night. LOOPMAG.NET 5

The Best of The Market Breakfast at St George’s Market Bar and Grill in Belfast has been announced as the Northern Ireland winner in the Shake-UpYour-Wake-Up Breakfast Awards and overall runner up restaurant for the whole of the UK. Its legendary breakfast is cherry picked from the fantastic artisan producers in the market itself. The traditional dry cured bacon, sausages and eggs are from local County Down, free-range farm and St George’s stall holder Pheasants’ Hill Farm using sustainable farming methods. The soda and potato bread is from Chrissie, a local baker and stallholder at St George’s Market who uses her grandmother’s recipes using real buttermilk, all handmade on her farm in Killinchy. The black and white puddings are courtesy of Conakilty and the butter is a Great Taste award winner, hand churned in Dromara by Abernethy Butter Company. The campaign is run by a division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board and aims to showcase the most important meal of the day to raise awareness of the health and nutritional benefits of breakfast. stgeorgesbargrill.com

WINDOW ON WILDLIFE
PREPARE TO BE WOW-ED!
One of the best places to see birds and wildlife in Northern Ireland has reopened. And it’s just across the road from Holywood! belfast.lough@rspb.org.uk.
RSPB NI’s Belfast Lough nature reserve in the Harbour Estate has undergone an extensive refurbishment and has been re-named Belfast’s Window on Wildlife (WOW). Belfast WOW is an unexpected product of Belfast’s industrial past. When material dredged from the Lough was pumped here to allow larger vessels to dock, the area was quickly reclaimed by nature. It is now home to birds and other wildlife from all over the world and more than 100 species have been recorded at the site. Major construction work has seen the existing visitor centre extended to give even better views and state-of-the art interpretation brings the visitor facilities to life. From the visitor centre, you can experience panoramic views
of the lagoon but don’t worry if you’re not an ID expert - there will be binoculars and telescopes available and friendly RSPB staff and volunteers on hand to help! The refurbishment includes a new community room, which is available for hire, and a full events calendar makes Belfast WOW a great place to visit all year round. RSPB NI has also constructed lots of new homes for nature at the site, including a sand martin bank and a swift tower, which will be installed in the spring. Two new hides, which have been constructed from shipping containers to tie in with their surroundings, offer different perspectives on the reserve and feature a members-only area, which is suitable for photography. There’s lots to see at the reserve no matter when you
visit. In summer artificial islands give common and Arctic terns a safe place to breed and the reserve comes to life with the sound of many warblers arriving from Africa. In winter, the water is full of wildfowl like wigeon and teal, while black-tailed godwits can be seen digging in the mud for food. Resident konik ponies also graze the reserve, acting as ‘living lawnmowers’ and creating ideal conditions for groundnesting birds like lapwings. This ambitious project was made possible by funding from the European Regional Development Fund administered by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Belfast Harbour Commission and the Alpha Programme administered by Groundwork NI.
As a charity, the RSPB is reliant on donations from members and supporters to help run this fantastic site, which is why they have introduced a small entry charge for non-RSPB members at Belfast WOW. £3 for adults and £1.50 for children and other concessions. To become an RSPB member - just ask one of the team at the reserve. You will then enjoy free access to Belfast WOW, plus all the other benefits that RSPB membership brings. For more information, please call the reserve directly on 028 9046 1458 or email belfast.lough@rspb.org.uk. 10 LOOPMAG.NET

MAJOR TELEVISION AWARD FOR SIXTEEN SOUTH HOLYWOOD RESIDENT Colin Williams, Creative Director at Sixteen South, saw his team win a major television industry award for its mixed-media animation series Lily’s Driftwood Bay
W
ith a cast that includes stars Stephen Fry, Ardal O’Hanlon, Jane Horrocks, Annette Crosbie, Richard Dormer and Peter Mullan, Lily’s Driftwood Bay has been named Best Pre-School Programme at the Broadcast Awards 2015. Already a hit show in the UK, US and Australia, Lily’s Driftwood Bay was awarded the Recommended seal by the Parent’s Choice organisation in the USA. Judges said that the reason Lily’s Driftwood Bay should win the Parent’s Choice award was due to its simple but entertaining stories. They also said that Lily herself had a charming little voice and that Lily’s
Driftwood Bay has all the elements to captivate very young viewers and distinguishing it from many other children’s series is its art direction. And just this week, it was confirmed that the programme born in Belfast will being airing in Brunei, Finland, Germany and Hong Kong this year. It has just been released as a TV box set on Sky and is available on Netflix for viewers in USA and Canada, with UK and Ireland to follow later in the year. Colin Williams said: “Stunning, it’s absolutely stunning to win this prestigious award, voted for by our peers in

the television industry. The judges recognised the programme for its story and heart and we very much put our hearts and souls into the creation of every episode. Each episode of Lily’s Driftwood Bay is rich in its storyline which is delivered by an A-list cast. It has always been our vision that our stories should be enjoyed by every child in every home in every country and to see Lily’s Driftwood Bay travel to such far off places is amazing and really humbling for all of us on the team.” Lily’s Driftwood Bay is supported by Northern Ireland Screen.

WILD GEESE While some of you may be familiar with Ireland’s famed ‘Wild Geese’ I wonder how many of you have ever heard of Ireland’s ‘Wine Geese’?
Chateau de La Ligne Bordeaux Superioré
Available at Grange Wine Merchants
GRANGE WINE 49 Bangor Road, Holywood, BT18 0NE • 028 9039 7579 info@grangewine.co.uk
he flight of the Wild Geese refers to the exodus of Irish soldiers to France at the end of the 1600’s following the Willamite-Jacobite war. Today the term “Wild Geese’ is used to define all Irish emigrant families who fled Ireland to join various continental European armies. The term ‘Wine Geese’ emerged later to describe these and more recent Irish emigrant families who became involved in the wine trade throughout the world. Many of these families played a crucial role in the development of France’s wine industry, most notably in Bordeaux. Two of the most important families that settled in Bordeaux were the Barton family and the Lynch family, who gave their names to such highly-regarded Chateaux as Ch. Leoville-Barton and
Ch. Lynch-Bages respectively. Other notable Bordeaux Chateaux of Irish origin include Chateau Clark, Chateau Dillon, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Phelan-Segur, Chateau Yquem and Chateau Kirwan to name a few. A local Belfast businessman, Terry Cross purchased Chateau de La Ligne in Bordeaux on St Patricks day 2000 and set in motion the Renaissance of the noble wine. Terry’s Bordeaux Superioré is made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes aged in French and American oak barrels creating a delicious medium bodied, smooth tasting wine that exhibits great depths of colour with blackcurrent hues. Displaying an elegant bouquet of tobacco and spices, lightly toasted oak and silky tannins, this is a truly elegant wine....

HOLYWOOD EDITION #3/MARCH 2015
CELEBRATING LOCAL TALENT FOR DECADES
HOLYWOOD MUSIC FESTIVAL 2015 By Chairman of the Holywood Music Festival Committee, John Young: “Perhaps the most surprising fact about the Holywood Music Festival is that so little appears to be known about it, even though it has been a feature of Holywood’s annual calendar since shortly after the end of the Second World War. It is almost as if it happens without anyone in the Holywood area noticing.”
“O
ne explanation of this may be the fact that, when something happens every year and without any great excitement or fuss, people understandably tend to take it for granted and perhaps assume that it will continue to happen in every succeeding year. Another may be that the real value and importance of the Festival may not be fully understood or appreciated. People may see it as something that appeals to a small minority of musical enthusiasts, does no harm and causes no disputes. We want to challenge assumptions like this and make Holywood people and businesses aware of just how valuable the Festival
is and appeal to them to become its much more active supporters. We want everyone in Holywood and beyond to be aware that Festival 2015 will start on 12 November and run through until the Gala Evening that brings it to a close on 21 November. And we also want everyone who reads this to know that, as a Committee, we are very interested in having new members. So, anyone who agrees with our sense of the importance of organising and running a music festival in Holywood will be very welcome indeed. And, if anyone who reads this is interested in knowing more, the best place to go is the Holywood Music Festival website below.
“
The Festival Committee’s annual general meeting will take place at Royal Belfast Golf Club at 7p.m. on 19th March. This is a public meeting and everyone is very welcome. 18 LOOPMAG.NET

HAVE YOU AN EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT AND ARE THEY WORTH IT?
Advice from Employment Law Specialist Laura McManus at Hunt Solicitors, Holywood.
I
f you have just started working for a company and haven’t been given a contract of employment, you might think it’s not necessary or that if you ask for one you will be seen as a trouble maker. Likewise if you are a business owner and employ staff you may think that spending the time and effort to put together an employment contract is a
nice “to do”. Something you might get around to when you have a bit of time on your hands. Will that ever happen? No matter your position it is important to note that an employee not being provided with a written statement of employment within six weeks of their commencement date is a breach of the employer’s statutory duties. The
