A visit to your local pharmacy before you go on holiday can help to avoid some of the most common illnesses that can spoil your trip. Travel Vaccinations: Start preparing for your holiday at least 6 weeks before you travel. Ask your GP what vaccines you require as they will have a record of the vaccines you have received to date. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): When a blood clot forms in one of the body’s deep veins. Occurs when a person has been inac-

JULY 20 15 tive for a period of time, as blood collects in lower parts of the body, particularly in the lower legs. Every year one in every 1000 people in UK develop DVT. On flights (particularly long haul flights) walk around and stretch your legs whenever you can. Drink regularly but avoid alcohol. Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Compression stockings can help reduce the risk of developing DVT and can be bought at your local pharmacy. Jet Lag: Adjust to your destination as soon as possible. Set your watch to the local time as soon as you board. Try to eat and sleep according to appropriate local times. Stomach Bugs: Follow the simple rule “Cook it, Boil it, Peel it or Leave it”. Take rehydration sachets and anti-diarrhoea tablets with you. Planning ahead: If you take regular prescription medication make sure you have enough. Be careful if you need to take your medicines in hand luggage as there are restrictions. Sun damage: As mentioned in my last article “Be Sun SMART” and

take special care of children’s skin. Anti-Malarials: Whether you require antimalarial and the type you need will depend on where you are going, medical history, age and whether you are pregnant. It only takes one bite to become infected with malaria so make sure you take your malaria prevention seriously. Unfortunately, no anti-malarial tablets and travel vaccines are 100% effective so it is essential to use other bite avoidance precautions such as mosquito nets to go round your bed, skin repellents and plug in vaporisers.

In summary Burns Pharmacy are happy to provide advice and services to assist with: Preventing and treating stomach bugs. Planning ahead and packing or transporting your medicines. Reducing the risk of DVT. Treating travel sickness. Packing a holiday health kit. Preventing and treating sun damage. Taking antimalarials, where necessary.

astings Hotels is thrilled to have been awarded ‘Hotel of the Year’ for the Culloden Estate & Spa and ‘Lifetime Achievement’ for founder and Chairman Sir William Hastings at the Licenced & Catering News event in Belfast recently. The annual awards ceremony recognises outstanding talent in the hospitality industry across Northern Ireland and includes the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Sir William was acknowledged by the trade as someone who has changed the face of hospitality in Northern Ireland. Sir William said of his recent win: “I am absolutely delighted to be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Licensed & Catering News. I have a fantastic team in each of my hotels and over the years we have worked very hard to position Hastings Hotels as Northern Ireland’s leading collection of hotels. “This award is certainly very special to me and I must also extend my thanks to all my staff who work tirelessly in each of the hotels to ensure we can maintain the first class service and expertise that we have become renowned around the

world for, “ Sir William added. Over the past five decades, Sir William and his family have also created what has become Northern Ireland’s most successful indigenous hospitality chain. With an annual turnover of more than £40m, Hastings Hotels has not only redefined family-run success, but has also done so much to guide and shape the evolution of the modern hotel sector in Northern Ireland. Sir William is also the proud recipient of many of the highest honours that someone could be awarded– a CBE in 2004, an OBE in 2005 and, of course, his knighthood in 2011. He has been recognised academically too, with an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulster, awarded in 2002. The Culloden Estate & Spa was also awarded ‘Hotel of the Year’ for its outstanding service and professionalism and General Manager Adrian McNally again dedicated the award to his team. Judges said of the property: “What a wonderful place to stay – my every need was catered for and the facilities were fantastic. Flawless service delivered by professional and genuinely hospitable staff, I was very impressed.”

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

IN AN EARLY YEARS SETTING

By Meriel Linley

PRINCIPAL of Montessori Pre-School Helen’s Bay www.MONTESSORIHELENSBAY.CO.UK

P

arents know that the early years of a child’s development are important. Indeed, huge amounts of research have been carried out and the consensusis that they are, in fact, absolutely critical. The influences and environments that children are exposed to therefore need to be considered carefully. This is fairly straightforward at home, where you have complete control; but how do you ensure that your child’s first ‘outside home’ experience is as favourable and encouraging as the one you provide? Is it possible to dovetail the two? Let’s start with the obvious: qualified staff. This is not only desirable but imperative. Of course it is important that staff in any early years setting have been trained and understand the basics relating to child care. That’s the starting point. Experience, and a clear interest in the development and welfare of children, are also

hugely important. Check that the staff have a network of contacts with other early years professionals - expertise they can draw on to help enrich your child’s experience. We know that children are all different: therefore the more experienced the staff, the more relaxed they will be when dealing with the mix of personalities and situations that are part and parcel of helping little ones start their educational journey. It’s worth asking yourself if, as a parent of guardian, you like the people who are in charge of your children. If you’re not too keen, it’s likely that your child isn’t either! Many early years settings focus on ‘learning through play’ which again has been shown through research to be favourable. However, be aware that this approach should have more to it than emptying out a box of blocks or having a sand pit available to play in. These play things of course have their place in any child friendly environment.

However, maximising a child’s ‘learning through play’ experience requires thought, preparation, guidance where necessary, and introduction of new or different stimuli at regular intervals. Look for a calm environment. Keeping calm may sound like a curious approach to children of this age, who are naturally associated with making noise! But this is an important point to keep in mind. Children need stimulation of course. But over-stimulation - for example, very busy colour schemes; availability of many play items on demand; continuous high levels of noise - can in fact be very unsettling and tiring for young children. Stimulation can quickly lead to overload and exhaustion. Finally, are the staff in the setting willing to support you in achieving your aims for your child? Do you feel confident and comfortable in discussing your aims and objectives, such as help with toilet training, or putting on shoes and coats.

SO IN SUMMARY CHECK : staff qualifications | staff experiencE | network of professional contacts | understanding of ‘learning through play’ | calm environment | balance between stimulation and over stimulation | feeling comfortable discussing your aims and objectives 14 LOOPMAG.NET

HUGE APPETITE for ‘Farm to Fork’ Event

JUly 20 15

Clandeboye Farm, County Down

F I ELD

Reseacrh Record visitor figures of more than 21,000 proved that farming, food and family were the main ingredients for an action-packed day out as part of Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend (Sat 13 and Sun 14th June).

2

1 real, working farms across Northern Ireland opened their gates to help educate the public on the reality of farming and food production, successfully bridging the gap between rural and city life. Delivered by the Ulster Farmers’ Union and sponsored by Bank of Ireland UK, the event has been building momentum since it started in 2012 but this year’s attendance figures have broken all records.“Once again, Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend has proved to be a winner for all involved,” said Barclay Bell, UFU Deputy President. We’ve been completely bowled over by the response from the public, particularly from families, as they’ve totally embraced the whole concept of the event. Food and its provenance are so important today, and there’s no better way to bring this to life than by meeting local farmers and experiencing what they do on a day-to-day basis. For many, 16 LOOPMAG.NET

this was the first time they’d set foot on a real farm so it was a unique opportunity to learn about important processes such as growing crops and milk production.” William Thomspon, AgriManager from event sponsor Bank of Ireland UK also extended his appreciation to the 21 farmers who made the event such a success:“The farming community are at the heart of this initiative. We really appreciate their efforts in bringing the ‘farm to fork’ message to life by opening their gates and welcoming more than 21,000 visitors onto their land. It is particularly special as they are not only opening their business to public scrutiny, but also their homes. Each has invested a great deal of thought and effort to make sure their event is unique and engaging. Their innovative approach, using farm-walks and tours, demonstrations, picture boards, quizzes and

story-telling has made Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend an overwhelming success.” Food processors, local artisan producers and the retail sector also supported the farm to fork message by taking stands on the farms, explaining their connections to farming in NI, and sampling their product ranges. In the run up to the event, school children also visited the participating farms and had tours of Asda supermarkets to help them grasp the whole farm to supermarket process. Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend 2015 was developed and delivered by the Ulster Farmers’ Union, sponsored by Bank of Ireland UK and supported by Asda, NFU Mutual Insurance, The Prince’s Countryside Fund, , and Tesco. The initiative was also made possible thanks to the help, advice and support of Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, CAFRE, NIFDA, and Food NI.

ANOTHER ROUND OF SUMMER PARTY DRINKS! B Y D e m e l z a K e l ly - F ly n n

Demelza is back at the helm with another cracking selection of summer concoctions to help you cool down this summer!

METHOD

PIMM’S POPSICLES “A classic summer (or anytime) garden party drink transformed into a deliciously boozy, very adult treat!”

INGREDIENTS (makes 8) 20 Strawberries, hulled and quartered 150 ml pimm’s 300 ml lemonade Handful of fresh mint Lolly pop moulds

Step 1 - slice up fruit into small portions. Pop the fruit into the lolly pop moulds layering them along with a single mint leaf. Step 2 - in a jug, measure the pimms and lemonade-i recommend letting the fizz subside for a few seconds as it freezes better without so many bubbles, and then pour this into the cavity on top of the fruit. Fill until the line indicated and place tops on the holder and freeze until firm (several hours or overnight) Step 3 - run hot water along the body of the holders to loosen and pull out gently. Step 4 - enjoy!

SUMMER ICE CUBES

METHOD: Pop pieces of fruit into your ice cube tray / Top with water / Freeze / Pop them into your drinks and serve TOP TIP: Use mineral water or boiled water and you will get clear ice cubes!

“a simple concept—Pieces of fruit in tiny frozen squares!—and yet it never ceases to make me feel like I’m getting a special treat. These add a refreshing burst of fruit flavour to your sparkling water, ginger ale, or regular water or for chilling down your cocktails. They are super easy to make, and they look really pretty in the glass. Perfect for summer patio drinks. Its also a great way to use up some berries before they might go bad.”

SWEET SOUTHERN ICED TEA “A “ secret ingredient” in my iced tea neutralises the bitterness and creates a smooth, clear Tea... sssssshhhhh promise not to tell?….. its BAKING SODA. I also add the lemon slices to the glasses before serving instead of to the pitcher to keep them from breaking down too much.”

INGREDIENTS - serves 8 1Litre Water 150-200g granulated sugar teaspoon baking soda 10 tea bags black tea The juice of 4 -6 fresh lemons 4 lemons, sliced METHOD: Bring the water to boil. In a large, heat-proof pitcher/jug, combine the boiling water, baking soda & sugar mix well to dissolve the sugar. Add the tea bags and let steep for 10 minutes. Remove the tea bags. Add the lemon juice and fill the rest of the pitcher/jug with cold water. Refrigerate until chilled. Add lemon slices and ice to the glasses and pour the tea over the ice and lemon slices to serve.

THE EYES HAVE IT Super exciting advances have been taking place in the beauty industry! After having an amazing LVL treatment I knew clients at DHMB would love it too! Unlike a traditional

eyelash perm, LVL Enhance straightens your natural lashes at the root, creating the appearance of longer, thicker lashes. Plus the added lash tint creates a mascara style effect, so

your lashes perfect from the moment you wake up. Ideal for those seeking a more natural look, the treatment takes just 40 minutes but the effects are instant and last from six-eight weeks.

Celebrity make-up artist, Lisa Eldridge says

“LVL is one of the quickest ways to brighten and lift your entire face.” This before and after pic is Cara from DHMB - the after picture is how the lashes looked straight after the treatment - no mascara!

FACE FAC TS >>>>> Leading the way in anti age skincare is Yon-Ka The new excellence code facial regenerates and reinforces barrier repair, nourishes, hydrates and provides improved resistance to mature skin. TIME IS MONEY

spend your company’s time WISELY HUNT

Solicitors When a company is involved in litigation, one of the most significant costs involved is the disruption to the day to day running of the business. Parties can get bogged down on the legal costs but the time that a director or employee of a company has to spend dealing with a dispute is time not being spent on securing new business or growing the company and ultimately is lost revenue. Chloe Doherty-Prosser from Hunt Solicitors has some advice.

P

arties can get bogged down on the legal costs but the time that a director or employee of a company has to spend dealing with a dispute is time not being spent on securing new business or growing the company and ultimately is lost revenue. The emphasis of the Courts in Northern Ireland is to enable parties to avoid litigation by agreeing early settlement of a claim prior to the commencement of legal proceedings. Early settlement can be achieved through the exchange full information about any prospective legal claim at the earliest opportunity. If we take a breach of contract situation, the first stage is a Letter of Claim setting out the facts, the nature of alleged breach and finally the remedy sought. The Defendant must provide a Response Letter stating whether it agrees or disagrees to the allegations set out in the Plaintiff’s Letter of Claim. If, on the face of it there has been a clear breach of the contract and it is likely that the Defendant will ultimately end up paying damages to the Plaintiff, then early settlement is advisable. Say the Plaintiff’s claim is for £50,000, it may be willing to accept damages of £20,000, if it were to be placed in funds within 7 days. The legal costs and disruption to the day to day running of

the business would be minimal in comparison to those that would be incurred up to and including any court hearing. The Court now expects parties to use alternative dispute resolution methods such as pre action meetings and mediation as a means to resolving the dispute and at the very least narrowing the issues between the parties. The parties to any litigation will be asked by the Court as to what alternative dispute resolution methods have been availed of, whether any party has refused to attend and the reasons why. A party who has been unnecessarily obstructive may prejudice themselves in relation to costs on the conclusion of the matter. Sometimes litigation is unavoidable and it is important that proceedings are managed efficiently. If a settlement can be reached it should be done at the earliest opportunity and not the moment you’re about to walk into Court, when costs have already significantly mounted up. Hunt Solicitors take a proactive approach to resolving commercial disputes. We can advise you whether early settlement can be reached or whether litigation is necessary, for more information please do not hesitate to contact our specialist litigation solicitors.

TALK TO US CAMPAIGN

T

he ‘Talk To Us’ cmpaign aims to let people know that anyone can contact Samaritans, whoever they are, however they are feeling, and whatever life has done to them. They can talk in confidence, by phone, email, text or face to face about whatever’s troubling them. Deirdre Walsh, Director of the Bangor and North Down branch, says people don’t have to be suicidal to talk to Samaritans.“Everyone struggles at some point, or feels overwhelmed by what’s happening in their lives. It can feel difficult to talk, even to people you feel close to. Our volunteers are here to listen, round the clock, every day of the year, to help you work through your problems. It might be a life-changing event like a relationship breakdown, redundancy or bereavement. But work, study, family, friends, finances, housing, health, sexuality and
