Muir Welcomes Saving of Historic Gate Lodge Alliance Councillor Andrew Muir has welcomed news an historic gate lodge is to be saved from potential destruction.
R
egional Development Minister Danny Kennedy announced in response to an Alliance Assembly question that Craigowen Lodge, located on the main Belfast to Bangor road close to the Seahill Road junction, would be given to Hearth Housing Association with a view to securing its future. The lodge had been purchased by Roads Service ahead of a proposed road-widening scheme that never occurred. The listed building suffered an arson attack several years ago, after which it had a tin roof installed for protection. It was designed by Thomas Turner, a pupil of Sir Charles Lanyon. North Down Councillor Mr Muir said the lodge was an important local landmark and safeguarding its future is something he has long campaigned on.“Craigowen Lodge is a building steeped in history and heritage, which deserves to be restored and protected as much as possible. Hearth Housing Association informed me in 2011 they wanted to renovate the building, so it is extremely welcome to see that work finally moving ahead. Hearth specialises in restoring historic buildings, so the organisation is perfect to bring back Craigowen to its former glories. Our built heritage needs to be secured – they could provide much-needed social housing and used in general so future generations can enjoy them.”

Ashfield Girls DISCOVERI NG H E A NE Y CO U NT RY Recently Year 11 GCSE English Literature students from Ashfield Girls’ journeyed north to spend the day in the villages of Castledawson and Bellaghy, and surrounding townlands, as part of their poetry module on the work of Seamus Heaney.
U
nder the direction of local guide and Heaney expert, Mr Eugene Kielt, the students were able to explore the landscape that inspired many of the poems studied in class. Visits to the locations that hold special significance in Heaney’s writing brought his poetry to life giving pupils a greater sense of the Nobel Laureate’s background, the rural community in which he grew up and his affinity to nature. With regular stops for recitations and readings, Mr
Kielt entertained the students with personal stories and anecdotes as they toured the countryside, ticking off many of the literary landscapes immortalised in Heaney’s poetry such as Mossbawn, Anahorish, Broagh, the Moyola River and Lough Beg. The memory of the remarkable 95 year old Barney Devlin hammering the anvil in his father’s forge will never be forgotten nor will the lively lunch-stop at McGrogan’s farm amidst goats, horses, chicks and
ducklings. A visit to Heaney’s grave and the Heaney Library in Bellaghy Bawn brought the tour to a poignant end and left the group with an understanding of Heaney’s legacy to the world of literature. Ashfield students and staff are extremely grateful to Mr Kielt of Laurel Villa, Magherafelt, for sharing his wealth of knowledge and passion for Heaney’s poetry and also to local estate agent John Minnis for generously sponsoring the trip.

A DECADE IN BUSINESS for John Minnis E s tat e A g e n t s Leading Northern Ireland estate agency John Minnis Estate Agents recently celebrated ten years in business.
T
he company, which was founded in July 2005 in Holywood, now operates additional offices in Belfast and Donaghadee and has won numerous prestigious national awards for quality of service in both sales and residential lettings. Speaking at the recent Tall Ships celebration where the company held its ten-year celebrations, owner John Minnis said: “I am absolutely delighted to be here with our fantastic team today, celebrating the company’s tenth year in business. Back in 2005, there were just the four of us, we opened on the fourth of July 2005, ten years ago to the day. The team grew quickly as did the property market.” In 2007 JMEA opened a second office in the coastal town of Donaghadee, and a Belfast branch was added in 2012. The firm covers all areas of the province focusing on south and East Belfast the North Down coast and Ards Peninsula. The team now stands at 30 staff across three offices. “We’ve seen important advances in technology, and we’ve harnessed the best of them to give our clients that competitive edge. Those developments include a John Minnis iPhone app, the launch of John Minnis TV (JMTV) online presentations providing video views and walkthroughs, drone photography, floor plans and the company’s growing use of social media to communicate with clients and potential customers.” Thanks in part to such innovations, JMEA has made a consistently strong showing
John Minnis Directors celebrate with staff at the company’s 10 Year Celebration at the Tall Ships in Belfast. at the ESTAs, the so-called ‘property industry Oscars’. In recent years, the company has won a string of these prestigious national awards, including ‘Best Local Lettings Agency in the UK’ and ‘Best Estate Agents in NI’. However, Mr. Minnis himself attributes JMEA’s continuing success to old-fashioned ‘people skills’. “At the end of the day, it comes down to relationship building and a proactive approach,” he said. “The old adage that people buy from people has never been so true. I’m grateful for the dedication of my team, which has brought us through the deepest property recession in Northern Ireland’s history. It was hard work, but now that we’re through it, it feels like we’ve made huge strides, and I am proud that we are leading the market in Northern Ireland. To-date we have sold in excess of half a billion pounds of property.” He finishes on a high note. “The two most recent reports from RICS and the Office of National Statistics confirm our team findings. It’s official – the NI housing market is in recovery! While I don’t think we’re going to see a repeat of 2014’s stellar growth rates this year, I believe that NIs property market will continue to outperform the rest of the UK... and we will help our clients to make the most of the opportunities that provides. John concluded: “I am delighted with John Minnis Estate Agent’s continued growth, and I look forward to our next ten years in business.”

E
ach of the six finalists has been awarded a summer internship worth £2,000. In addition, the six teenage entrepreneurs have been assigned a mentor and will receive 8 weeks of business coaching, including marketing, finance, legal and pitch training. At the end of the summer, all six will pitch their business idea to a panel of judges with one teen securing an additional £10,000 prize and a year of mentoring to develop their business further. Mason said, “As the technology industry is growing, companies and schools are relying on tech for school work, assignments, spreadsheets and important documents. This will save a lot of hassle from having to repeat
or catch up on work.” Dr Joanne Stuart, Director of Development at the Northern Ireland Science Park, said, “We were very impressed by all of the entrants and their innovations, not least because of their young age, but also because their ideas have the potential to become very viable and commercial companies and products. The chosen six will now get the chance to develop their business further, with mentoring and guidance from our successful entrepreneurs in the Science Park network. It is this invaluable advice which will help them to challenge and ultimately refine their current business models.” Tom O’Gorman, one of NI’s
most successful business investors, and Jim Finnegan, a key investor in local startups, both worked with the NI Science Park to develop the unique initiative. Tom said, “It was inspiring to listen to all of the pitches and it was a hard task to pick our final six, but we believe that we have selected a strong and diverse mix of business ideas, all with commercial potential. The opportunity for each of them to work alongside a mentor for the next 8 weeks will enable them to hone their ideas and business models and I am looking forward to see how they all develop over that period. All six are great role models to other aspiring young entrepreneurs.”

Flight Delay Come fly with me but not for another 3 hours!
HUNT SOLICITORS H O LY W O O D
It’s finally here, time to go on the holiday you booked in January. Bags packed, final checks to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything, house locked, children in the car and off you go to the airport. You arrive just in time to catch that all-important flight but wait it has been delayed and you find yourself spending more time in the airport than you bargained for. Flight delays can put a real dampener on the start of your holiday. If you have been delayed more than 2 hours then your airline must provide you with the following: Food: Meals and refreshments proportionate to the length of time you are delayed (usually vouchers will be provided for you to spend in the airport) Communication: Two telephone calls, fax messages or emails free of charge Accommodation: If your flight is delayed overnight (they must also provide transport to this accommodation and to the airport the next day). If your airline refuses or fails to provide you with any of the above make sure that you hold on to all receipts for any expenses you incur at the airport as a result of the delay, as you can send these to the airline for reimbursement on your return home.
Compensation If your flight is delayed more than 3 hours then you may be entitled to compensation under EU Law, which applies regardless of what airline you choose to fly with. The amount of compensation you are entitled to is dependent on the distance travelled: Short haul flights: €250- Less than 1,500km eg. Belfast to London Medium haul flights: €400- Between 1,500 & 3,500 kilometres eg Belfast–Faro Long haul flights: €300- More than 3,500km delayed for 3 hours eg. Belfast-New York €600- More than 3,500km delayed for 4 hours. Compensation is not payable in the case of exceptional circumstances such as security risks or extreme weather conditions. Failure to submit the correct flight documentation, allowing enough turnaround time or aircraft technical issues are all circumstances in which you may be able to claim compensation for. If you are making the most of the current high sterling to euro exchange rate and flying from Dublin this year the above information also applies. We hope that you have fantastic holiday wherever you are headed this year but if you are unfortunate enough to have your flight delayed please do not hesitate to contact Patrick Hunt, a solicitor in our Litigation team. World Oyster Eating Champion, Colin Shirlow, has launched the search in Holywood for a protégé as he celebrates the tenth anniversary of his Guinness World Record achievement of eating 233 oysters in 3 minutes
S
till undefeated, the Dromore man, now aged 59, has learned that his unique oyster-eating technique is being studied by some of the world’s top competitive eaters to help them improve their own performance and he is hoping to share this technique with an aspiring future king or queen of oyster-eating. “I had never eaten oysters before I undertook my first challenge at the Hillsborough International Oyster Festival back in 2005,” said Colin. “So this year, to coincide with the tenth anniversary of my Guinness World Record, I am keen to find someone who, just like me, doesn’t yet know that they have what it takes to be the next World Oyster Eating Champion.” One of the world’s top competitive eaters, who has closely studied Colin’s
technique is FoodChallenges. com owner, Randy Santel. Only last year Randy completed a series of eating challenges in Northern Ireland, including massive breakfasts and oversized burgers. Randy comments, “I have closely followed the sport of competitive eating since 2010, and individual eaters from the UK, Europe, Australia and the USA who compete in global food challenges. The World Oyster Eating Championship has been of great interest to me and I’ve watched all of the videos on YouTube and have used Colin’s techniques in every oyster eating contest I’ve done. Everyone in the USA does. He is absolutely flawless and unstoppable.” In recent years Colin has been challenged by some of the best and the fastest competitive
eaters in the world, including Matt Stonie, Sonya ‘The Black Widow’ Thomas, Miki Sudo, and Bob Shoudt, none of whom have managed to get near Colin’s world title. Randy explains, “Most competitive eaters in the USA specialise in quantity and speed with large items such as hot dogs, pizza, and burgers. Speed eating oysters is an entirely different ballgame and one for which Colin has developed a truly unique technique.” Colin adds, “I hadn’t really thought of my technique as being truly unique and I take this as a real compliment. I am very chuffed that my technique is something which is helping to inspire professional competitive eaters and I wonder if my former boxing career has helped in the development of this?”

Holywood TOP TIPS • IF YOU HAVE A GOOD BOTTLE OF VODKA SITTING IN YOUR DRINKS CUPBOARD THAT YOU JUST DONT WANT TO JUST THROW COKE INTO NOW IS THE TIME TO CRACK THAT BAD BOY OPEN!! MARTINIS DONT HAVE MUCH VOLUME OF LIQUID SO ITS IMPORTANT TO USE GOOD QUALITY INGREDIENTS • WHEN I SAY SHAKE, I MEAN SHAKE YOUR COCKTAIL SHAKER UNTIL ITS TOO COLD TO HOLD!! • MARTINIS ARE SERVED WITH NO ICE SO MY TOP TIP IS TO PRE CHILL YOUR GLASS EITHER POP IT IN YOUR FREEZER OR CHILL IT WITH ICE THEN DISCARD BEFORE SERVING
“With the announcement of the new James Bond movie I just can’t help thinking about...Martinis! I remember ordering my first, I thought I was so cool ordering a gin Martini, shaken not stirred of course! Well let me tell you I didn’t look too cool drinking it! I couldn’t hide my distaste. Martinis
are strong...They are meant to blow your socks off! A gin Martini is gin, with a slash of vermouth. Personally I find them just too strong, so here are a few much more quaff-able Martinis, perfect to get your party going!” Demelza Kelly-Flynn @ 81 Holywood

utism NI has been National Museums Northern Ireland’s chosen charity for the past two years during which time the organisation has raised awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder through a range of initiatives including a Children’s Art Exhibition and light shows during Autism Awareness month at the Ulster Museum. Morag Stuart of National Museums Northern Ireland said, “We’ve enjoyed working with Autism NI and, through various training sessions, our partnership has helped us further enhance visitor services for people on the autistic spectrum. We are delighted that our
fundraising efforts have raised a significant amount for this important charity.” A number of fundraising events were held by staff from all National Museums’ sites including a sponsored Mourne Walk, a Christmas Quiz, a ‘Wear Blue to Work Day’, Belfast Marathon relay team, a Holly Jolly Christmas Walk, a flag day in Bangor and various other initiatives such as cake sales and raffles. Rachel Gribben of Autism NI said, “We are very grateful to all the staff at National Museums Northern Ireland for this superb contribution to the work of Autism NI. It has been a pleasure to work with the team who, from the outset,

started to make my own II got jewellery in 2010 right before married. My Honeymoon was fast approaching and I knew from previous experience of travelling with my future husband that my marriage may be short lived if he had to pay excess baggage because of the amount of clothes I usually take on holiday! So I took fewer clothes and packed more accessories and looked like I was wearing something completely different every night of our trip. Now, the pieces I was making then were a whole lot more modest than what I create now, still it was the inspiration I needed to learn to create pieces as I do today. I am inspired daily, by life, people, my little people, our incredible night sky and trips to Ibiza (always in my heart & mind). As a huge fan
of Boho and accessories, these Summer months excite me. I love to hear tales from my customers about where they are going on holiday and what outfits they are going to be wearing... their handlets, capes and ankle chains with. These pieces can be found on my website bohemianvixen.com or send me an email to discuss a bespoke piece - a service that has been most popular this
year. I am currently designing my own jewellery for my holiday in Ibiza; I will have bare foot sandals, handlets, delicate fringed capes and upper arm cuffs to wear with my selection of kimonos (these of course are an essential part of every boho wardrobe) Individuality is key so I will be channeling my inner Stevie Nicks sunbathing at Formentera but doing it my way with LOTS more jewellery.

“Need to get away from the wife for a few hours after you’ve done the washing and hoovering?!” “Holywood Men’s Shed MIGHT HAVE THE ANSWER!”
A PLACE TO CONNECT
Connect with a number of like-minded men (and a few women too actually) up at the Stable Yard in Redburn Country Park have several sheds/ “ W eworkshops where
you can spend a few hours “futtering”, making things, chatting or just having a cup of tea. We can accommodate most interests. One shed is given over to woodcraft, another to art and we have another as a meeting house. Whether you interests are in DIY, model making, building contraptions, painting, sculpture, photography, film making or gardening or just grumbling about the state of the world we can fit you in. We hope to introduce metal forging soon. We
sometimes take on projects together. Last year we built a Dr Who Tardis – why you might ask? Just come along to May Day or Culture Night in Holywood and you will see it engulfed with would be “time travellers” of all ages. We have built a community fruit press, a 3d printer and much else beside. In fact we will build anything as long as it does not cost much or can be put together with donated material. We are always “on the look” for surplus tools, computers, building materials, scraps of wood and the like. We have a small trailer and
can collect. What is a Men’s Shed? One of our members has defined it as follows: ‘An informal space for men to meet and discuss issues, share skills and explore new interests, with an aim to promoting their own health and development and putting something back into the community. ‘ (Masefield ) 2011. If you want to learn more just come up to the Stable Yard in Redburn Country Park any weekend afternoon from about 2 pm. You can chat with the guys and get a cup of tea. You can check if it is the right place for you.
