The Holywood Barber’s Life Through the Lens Local couple Garry and Mari Jackson are well known in the town for the barber shop and their hardy endeavours keeping Holywood on the map. But now Garry has received a call to branch out, utilising his unique style into modelling.
ari was contacted last September by Cathy Martin from CMPR modelling agency, who asked if her husband Garry would be interested in doing some modelling work for Forestside shopping centre, who were looking for some mature models to spearhead their Autumn/Winter collection. Apparently they were looking for real people who had their own sense of style. Garry’s only concern was “is it cheesy?”, because his mates would never let him live it down! After being assured it wasn’t, Garry went along to Khara Pringle’s photographic studio where he met all the team (plus his fellow, first time model for the shoot, Denise O’Neil). ”Everybody involved on the shoot were really lovely and very professional and soon put us at our ease. What could have been a very daunting situation, ended up being a very enjoyable experience” said Garry. Since then Garry has done another modelling shoot for Cookstown based, bespoke tailor Dee Graham, modelling one of his lovely three piece, tweed suits. Mari says “There’s life in the old dog yet, so maybe your fifties are the new thirties!”

THE TIMES BOUTIQUE OF THE WEEK
HOLYWOOD BOUTIQUE RECEIVES TIMES NEWSPAPER ACCOLADE The Holywood and Belfast fashion retailer Please Don’t Tell would sit comfortably in London’s Bond Street. And The Times newspaper agrees, recently making it their Boutique of the Week.
ts owner, Anne Donaldson’s opened the boutique in 2011 because she realised Belfast was more of a fashion no mans land than fashion capital. Following that , Holywood residents were lucky to welcome their own branch of the boutique. Four years later it now stocks a host of London Fashion Week designers including Roksanda Ilincic, Jonathan Saunders, JW Anderson and Peter Pilotto as well a s b r a n d s su c h a s T h e o r y, I s a b e l Marant and Helmut Lang. “Belfast was deprived of any international brands,” she says. “We travelled to Paris and New York and Dublin was the closest thing in regards to fashion.” With years of
I
retail experience under her belt as French Connection buyer in Northern Ireland, Anne feels that women who are “aware of new brands and not stuck in their ways” finally have somewhere in Belfast to shop. Those further afield who aren’t local to the stores to pick up Theory’s cashmere sweaters or Joseph’s coats, two of the boutiques best sellers, can shop Please Don’t Tell’s stock through luxury e-commerce site Farfetch. Should you find yourself in the boutique though, try on something from Rixo, a new London based label that is exclusive to Please Don’t Tell in Ireland. One visit and you won’t be able to obey the instructions implicit in its name.

NEW CLINIC LAUNCHED
THE CLINIC AT THE HEART OF BELFAST GETS A FACE LIFT City Chiropody and Physiotherapy based in Church Lane Belfast has received a much needed face lift. The scheme to update the clinic is an initiative of the new owner David Hallowell.
ITY CHIROPODY AND PHYSIOTHERAPY was first established in 2001 when it was Belfast’s city centres first combined Physiotherapy and Chiropody clinic. “When we took over the clinic I knew we already had a strong loyal customer base so I had two aims, firstly to maintain the high clinical standards that the clinic has become known for and secondly to give the clinic an upgrade in terms of its overall look, facilities and hours of business. Staying true to the clinics original ethos of giving a high quality service has been at the core of all the changes we’ve made.” “The real key to the clinics success has always been its staff. Our Physiotherapist Michelle Terrins is one of the most experienced and highly respected Physiotherapists in the province and as such she has built a great reputation. Michelle has worked in clinics in London and New Zealand before returning home to work in Belfast. Our latwest addition to the team, Michelle Gawley is a Chiropodist and Podiatrist with many years of experience in private practice. Her ideas and input into the changes and improvements have been invaluable. The Staff have all been very supportive and I feel that we’ve a really strong team which will be able to carry the clinic forward through 2016.” The most obvious changes in the clinic are probably the face lift to the outside of the building which had become very rundown. In terms of some of the clinical changes we’ve made it’s really

been about adding more treatments. We now keep a full range of off the shelf orthotic supports and insoles which will allow the treatment of generalised biomechanical pain. Our range of cushioned insoles will allow patients to get much longer out of their treatment before needing to return for corn or callous reduction. Nail surgery for ingrown toe nails will also be carried out under local anaesthesia. Nail surgery is a permanent fix for patients suffering with ingrown toe nails and should be of particular benefit to those with chronic nail problems.” We also know that many of our patient’s love being able to combine a trip to Belfast with a relaxing Chiropody or Physiotherapy treatment so we’ve increased the number of appointments times available to keep up with demand. We want the whole experience of making an appointment and having a treatment to be as pleasant as possible and while it’s possible that we will put in a computer based booking system in the future, for the moment we’d really like to maintain a strong human contact element. To this end we’ve increased not only our clinical hours but also our reception cover. In the old days we had only three days reception cover which meant patients often spoke to an answering machine. This to me was not satisfactory and I know that most people prefer to speak to someone when they ring to make an appointment. As the new year begins we hope to continue to improve the facilities and treatments to optimise the patient experience.

WHAT IF … THERE IS FUNGUS AROUND THE BOTTOM OF MY TREE?
Fungus can take various shapes and forms when it comes to trees. With some, you may notice large brackets protruding from the trunk (typically around the base / chest height of the tree and present all year round). Other fruiting bodies will typically only arise in autumn and will be likely found in the soil near the vicinity of the tree. Honey fungus is probably the most commonplace in gardens. While fruiting bodies only appear in autumn, if you feel your tree may be affected look closely at the soil for rhizomorphs or bootlaces (due to their shoelace resemblance) that can be found all year round. Fungi will affect trees in various ways. The aforementioned honey fungus and common ganoderma attacks the root systems, while velvet fungus and porcelain fungus attack more localised areas and colonisation is often in the upper regions of the trunks potentially causing major limb failure. Any tree that shows signs of fungus, especially those in maturity and close to buildings and roads should be inspected immediately by a reputable tree surgeon with the appropriate certification.
WHAT IF … THERE ARE NESTING BIRDS/BATS IN MY TREES?
The law is extremely clear on this issue. Any tree with nesting birds or bats cannot have any remedial work carried out unless it can be proven that the tree is a danger to the public. There are potentially hefty fines for working outside these guidelines including £5000 per bat and £2000 per bird.

Pre-Nuptial Agreements
We’ve all heard about prenuptial agreements, be it in the movies, or perhaps even a high profile divorce in the news, but what are they all about? Are they worth it and do they actually work? Well the good news is that they do actually exist, so let’s dispel some of the myths we encounter and let’s simply focus on the facts at hand. - Una Conway, Head of the Matrimonial Department at Hunt Solicitors.

WHAT IS A PRE-NUPTIAL AGREEMENT? It is a legally binding agreement entered into by two people who are planning to marry. In most cases a pre-nuptial agreement applies in all jurisdictions and it doesn’t matter where the parties live during the course of the marriage. It is also binding upon their heirs / children and personal representatives. The agreement is made in anticipation of and is conditional upon the marriage taking place. It is important to note that the Agreement only comes into effect upon the actual marriage of the parties to each other.
WHY GET A PRE- NUP?
WHEN DOES IT COME INTO EFFECT This can be defined within the Pre- Nup, however a Pre – Nup will normally apply if the parties have lived separate and apart for a period of time (e.g. in excess of six months) or in the event of a decree of divorce, nullity or judicial separation.
WHEN DO I MAKE A PRE-NUP? The Agreement must be entered into at some stage prior to their intended marriage. Each party entering into an agreement must have their own, separate solicitor. There must be sufficient time allowed for advice, negotiation between solicitors and reflection by the parties involved. As this is a binding agreement which the parties’ respective heirs must adhere to full consideration must be given to the ramifications of entering into this Agreement.

ARE THEY LEGALLY BINDING IN NI? It should be made clear that under the law of Northern Ireland at present, Pre-Nuptial agreements are not contractually binding. It is not possible to wholly exclude the jurisdiction of a court, which can still make orders for financial provision.
SO MY MAKE A PRE NUP THEN? A Pre-Nuptial agreement will be one of the key factors that the court will take into account should any application be made for financial relief ancillary in a divorce. In addition pre-nuptial agreements may be more likely adhered to and implemented by the courts in Northern Ireland if the parties have each provided disclosure of his or her respective assets and liabilities and if they have had the benefit of independent legal advice. In short whilst a Pre- Nup may not be cast iron in some circumstances, it will almost always be very persuasive to a court.

HAIR CONTOURING
F EBRUA RY 2016
Hair contouring is the new trend entering the world of hair colour, instead of makeup the contouring effect on the hair can create illusions to enhance and flatter your face shape. Sabrina Robinson from SR Hairdressing explains the effect. WHAT FACE SHAPE HAVE YOU? | WHAT CONTOURING TECHNIQUE WILL BEST FLATTER YOUR FACE?
OVAL FACE SHAPE Jessica Alba has the perfect oval face, this is the most desirable face shape, everything goes with it and it is very versatile, if it was a body it would be the perfect ‘hourglass figure’. Contouring can still be an important technique with clients with the perfect oval face shape. By carefully placing bespoke colours you can also create beautiful texture and definition throughout the hair.
Sabrina “I have been a hairstylist for 15 years now having worked in numerous top salons in Belfast. I was handpicked by TIGI International to join their educational team and I taught stylists throughout Ireland in various methods of cut and colouring.”
OBLONG FACE SHAPE
ROUND FACE SHAPE To help create defined cheekbones and to sharpen the jawline round face shapes need to be lightened throughout the top area of the hair and deeper tones added to the length, this creates an illusion of a point on the lower end of the face. Lighter tones are positioned around the hairline and darker tones placed underneath and through the ends of the hair. This technique can be seen on Drew Barrymore.
SQUARE FACE SHAPE For square face shapes we need to soften the jawline. We do this by applying multi tonal layers of both light and dark or just dark tones to the corners of the face, at the top and ends of the hair. This technique creates the illusion of a shadow effect against the sides of the face, perfect for highlighting the cheekbones creating a more oval appearance.
To help slim and shorten the face deeper tones are added to the root area along the parting and soft lighter pieces are blended from above the ears to the ends of the hair. This creates the illusion of giving the face a slimmer shorter shape. A soft ombre look would be most suited for an oblong face.
HEART FACE SHAPE
To soften a heart shape face and create more of an oval appearance (hourglass figure) we apply lighter pieces around hairline, the ears and jawline to soften the bottom half of the face. We can also add depth to the root area with baby lights blended around the hairline similar to the oblong contouring technique. Kate moss, Reece witherspoon and scarlet Johansson are all examples.

BEACON OF HOPE AS MEW ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE OPTIC SET FOR DISPLAY IN TITANIC QUARTER
Titanic Foundation and the Commissioners of Irish Lights have been awarded a first-round pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund for saving, restoring and displaying the old optic from Mew Island Lighthouse, a very rare hyper radial Fresnel lens, in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter.
his award, along with early support from Ulster Garden Villages, will allow the project to progress to the second stage of the HLF application process. If successful, the optic will be restored and housed in a new interpretive structure, made to resemble a lighthouse lantern room where it would add an iconic element to the Titanic Quarter public realm. With free public access it will tell the story of lighthouses, their technological development, their light keepers, and their role in the proud maritime & industrial heritage of Belfast and Ulster. Mew Island lighthouse, on the outermost of the Copeland Islands, is one of the tallest lighthouses in Ireland. It is an important Aid to Navigation at the southern entrance to Belfast Lough, built at a time when Belfast was the worldcentre of linen, ship-building and rope-
T
making, and one of the most important ports in the World. The optic is the internal apparatus which gave Mew Island Lighthouse its traditional revolving light. Made in Paris in 1887, it is possibly the largest ever constructed, at a staggering 7 metres high, 2.6 metres wide and weighing up to 10 tonnes. The optic is one of 29 of the largest optics ever made, with only 18 still in existence across the world. It’s one of only 3 similar optics in Ireland, none of which are now operational. Over its life, and as technology has developed, Mew Island optic was lit with town-gas (derived manually on the island from coal), vaporised paraffin, and electricity. Irish Lights, recognising the importance of the optic within Belfast’s maritime heritage, have been working for over 3 years to find a suitable home for the optic. Through the partnership with Titanic Foundation, the charity that
owns Titanic Belfast, they are delighted that Mew Island Optic will be located in Belfast. Barry Phelan; Irish Lights Project Engineer said; “ This project will ultimately develop a brand new tourist attraction in Belfast, and will provide a permanent home for the magnificent Mew Island Lighthouse Optic beside a very worthy neighbour - Titanic Belfast. The project will also shine a light on the wonderful Great Lighthouses of Ireland nearby, which offers you a chance to stay in, visit, or learn about lighthouses and the Irish Lights at; Blackhead Antrim, St. John’s Point Down, Rathlin Island, or further afield.” The optic, which was recently replaced by a modern solarpowered, flashing LED in March 2015, has already been transferred from Mew Island to the Irish Lights’ offices in Dun Laoghaire where they are carrying out initial restoration works.
