ollowing a grant from Unltd, SENsations learning support, a community interest company, was established by Dr Clare Caughey, a local educational psychologist in 2015. The new centre, located on the Mongomery Road in east Belfast, is the next step in the new venture for Clare and she hopes that a diverse range of children and fa milies will be able to avail of the service.

very Tuesday evening the Lagan Village Youth Centre hosts the martial arts class for 9-13 years olds from the surrounding area thanks to funding from the Housing Executive. Up to 14 children join the two hour class each week to learn about martial art and the discipline needed to progress. Through the class, which is run by Youn Long Zhu, they learn about traditional Chinese culture and the language as well as the martial art. The young people come from a variety of cultural backgrounds so they have the opportunity to mix and learn more about each other’s traditions through a shared interest in martial arts. George Newell, of Lagan Village Youth and Community Group, said: “The class has opened up many avenues for the young people involved as they learn about each other’s backgrounds and more specifically the Chinese culture when they come together. In addition they are learning the invaluable tools of discipline and self-control as they develop their knowledge of the martial art. I’d like to thank the Housing Executive for their support of our work.” Gary Ballantyne the Housing Executive’s South & East Belfast Area Manager, commented: “We are pleased to support this martial art class in Lower Ravenhill as it is a different but effective way of promoting integration, inter-cultural awareness and mutual understanding.”

Battlefield Study Tour

EAST BELFAST’S HOLLIE MAKES JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY East Belfast teenager Hollie Croft has been on a journey of discovery to see Flanders Fields, marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

I

n the year which marks the one hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, East Belfast teenager Hollie Croft has been on a journey of discovery to see Flanders Fields at first hand and pay personal respects at the graveside of her relative, Corporal Robert Albert Croft of 5th Battalion Tank Corps who lies in Hangard Communal Cemetery in France. Hollie, an enthusiastic Cadet Corporal with the Clonaver Detachment Army Cadet Force in East Belfast, was taking part in a battlefield study tour to the Somme and Ypres areas organised for Cadets by the Army Cadet Force Association Northern Ireland. Together with around 40 Cadets and wwwaccompanying Adult Volunteers from across Northern Ireland, Hollie found the pages of the history books brought to life by ‘Exercise SOMME 100’. Association Chairman, Colonel Dave McCleery OBE, says, “The Cadets were an extremely receptive audience, all eager to find out as much as they could about a period of history which most of them are currently studying at school. As we journeyed around we all became increasingly and painfully aware that many of those who sacrificed their lives were not much older than our own Cadets. That sense of connection added to the poignancy of the tour and I know it is an experience which will live long in all our memories.”

The group visited Etaples Military Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in France before taking in many important historical sites in the Somme area including the Lochnagar Crater, the Tank Corp Memorial and The Windmill at Pozières, the Dickens Memorial,

the Devonshire Trench, the Sunken Road and the Thiepval Memorial. Wreath laying ceremonies and a short Remembrance Service were conducted at the Ulster Tower and Guillemont.

As they toured the Ypres area the young Cadets learned of the battle of Messines where the 36th Ulster Division and the 16th Irish Division fought side by side, visiting the Pool of Peace at Spanbroekmolen, Tyne Cot and Langmark Cemeteries and the Round Tower at the Island of Ireland Peace Park in Messines.

The tour gave all the Cadets an insight into the realities of World War 1, and a renewed respect for those who found themselves on the front line.

Some of the Cadets, like Hollie, added a further dimension to the sombre experience by visiting family graves.

“I was glad to be able to visit the Hangard Cemetery to pay respects at the grave of my own family member, Robert Albert Croft, to show that he hasn’t been forgotten even a century later, but it was a desperately sad experience. You think you know about World War 1 because you study it at school, but visiting the places where it all happened and where so many people died makes it seem so much more real. This is something I will always remember.”

ALMOST 40 young people involved in an employability programme launched a ‘Youth Manifesto’ on Thursday, asking new and returned MLAs to make a commitment young people.

FRESH IDEAS TO START OFF THE NEW ASSEMBLY Local 16-24 year olds seize the day and share their ideas with elected representatioves tying in with the new assembly launch.

T

he 16 to 24 years olds involved in the Give & Take: Start Programme - based in East & South Belfast, Shankill & North Belfast and North Down & Ards - take a regular interest in local politics and felt the new Assembly mandate presented the best time to share their ideas in writing with elected representatives in their constituencies.

The Young People Want Action On The Following Areas: Tackle Youth Unemployment And Create Good Quality Jobs / Increase Funding For Healthcare / Access To Housing And Benefits For Those Who Need Them / Integrated Education And Access To Community-Based Training / Justice, A Shared Future And Young People Having Their Say. Speaking at a celebration event for the 38 young people moving on from the current phase of the programme, Dearbhla Holohan, Give & Take: Start Programme manager at Include Youth said: “The young people from across the three programme sites worked together to come up with what they felt were the most important issues they want the new Assembly

to take forward. The young people all want to work so it was no surprise the number top issue highlighted by them was the urgency at which government needs to address the high levels of youth unemployment here. In the manifesto they call on government to offer employers greater incentives to provide young people with paid work, ban zero hour contracts and increase investment in community initiatives effectively supporting young people into work.”

Give & Take Start is a 14 week intensive employability and personal development programme supporting young people move into employment, training or education and feel more a part of their community.

It is delivered by Include Youth in partnership with East and South Belfast Alternatives and funded by the European Social Fund and the Department of Employment and Learning.

Matthew Smyth, one of the 13 participants on the programme in the East and South Belfast area, is currently applying for jobs and hopes to gain a place on a course at Belfast Met in September, said: “Start

helped me gain qualifications and increase my confidence so I was able to apply for work. It also helped me meet new people from different backgrounds.”

Ashleigh Roberts, Give & Take: Start Programme coordinator at East and South Belfast Alternatives, said: “The young people on Start are a dedicated, vibrant and friendly group. They have worked tirelessly to achieve their essential skills qualifications and have worked hard to secure employment or go onto further training or education. They have grown so much in confidence and I am so proud of all they have achieved.”

Young people on the programme in East and South Belfast gained Level 2 Essential Skills qualifications in Maths and English, OCN employability qualifications and a few have moved on to study child care, an access course in biomedical science and a job in social care. They also volunteered at the Welcome Organisation and took part in sports events, mental health and well-being initiatives and lectures about how they can access university.

When completed in 2017, the Connswater Community Greenway will be a living landmark and a fantastic legacy for everyone from across the city and beyond to enjoy.

A

s well as offering greener, cleaner spaces, including a wildlife corridor from Belfast Lough to the Castlereagh Hills, the nine kilometre linear park includes 16km of foot and cycle paths, improved green spaces, 26 new or improved bridges and crossings, 5km of flood walls and embankments, 6 new tourism and heritage trails and a C.S. Lewis Square at Holywood Arches for celebrations and events.

The Department for Infrastructure’s Rivers Agency is also working in partnership to deliver elements of the combined East Belfast Flood Alleviation Scheme, which will help to reduce flooding to 1,700 properties in east Belfast. As part of the opening celebrations of Marsh-wiggle Way key stakeholders including politicians, residents, businesses and nearby schools were invited to walk the way and enjoy activities such as music, crafts, story-telling and even take part in a unique Marsh-wiggle Wig Wam experience. The newly landscaped greenway link with lighting and street furniture will be open 24/7 and encourage people to get active by walking, running or cycling. The Connswater Community Greenway is a £40

million funded project developed by EastSide Partnership and delivered by Belfast City Council who is managing the project construction. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, Belfast City Council, the Department for Communities and the DfI Rivers Agency, the Greenway will improve the quality of life for local people and create a legacy for future generations.

Speaking at the opening of Marsh-Wiggle Way, Wendy Langham Programme Manager Connswater Community Greenway, said: “The opening of Marsh-Wiggle Way marks a significant milestone in the development of the Connswater Community Greenway. Not only will this brand new one kilometre link help to increase accessibility and opportunities for healthier lifestyles but will further connect people and places across the east of the city and beyond. Community engagement is at the very heart of the project and we were delighted that the link was named Marsh-wiggle Way by public vote. This opening is especially significant as it is the first of a series of openings of new sections of the greenway, with many exciting new places to open this year.”

APPY DAYS! LITTLE WING PIZZERIA TEAMS UP WITH STUDENTS TO CREATE NEW ‘WINGIN’ IT’ GAME Northern Ireland’s favourite pizzeria, Little Wing has launched an exciting new mobile game.

The popular home grown pizzeria group partnered with University of Ulster design students, tasking them with creating the design concept for their first ever mobile game, ‘Wingin’ It’, which is now available to download free from the Apple App Store and Google Play. University of Ulster BDes (Hons) Interaction Design students, Inga Hampton and Andy Whann jumped at the chance to get involved in the exciting project and stepped up to the plate with innovative concepts for the game. The students’ ideas were then brought to life by local developer, Chris Coleman.

‘Wingin’ It’ challenges players to make pizzas from the Little Wing menu; gamers must catch toppings on a winged pizza base as they fall from the sky whilst avoiding hitting any pesky clouds.

Players from as young as four years old will find themselves quickly immersed in the addictive game, becoming more and more determined to beat their high scores.

And with the ‘Winging It’ high scores to be displayed on leader boards in each of Little Wing’s six restaurants, the pressure is on for pizza lovers to hone their skills.

The game is the next stage in a series of ongoing investments in Little Wing’s digital offering, following the launch of its new website www.littlewingpizzeria.com earlier this year.

Players can download the game on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, so whether you are in one of the six Little Wing restaurants, or the comfort of your own home, you can grab a ‘pizza the action’.

Commenting on the launch, Luke Wolsey, Managing Director, Little Wing Pizzeria said: “Little Wing Pizzeria has six successful branches in Northern Ireland and we are always looking for opportunities to grow and develop our offering. The decision to get involved with the University of Ulster was easy and we were thrilled to see the quality of the ideas that

With the support of George Best Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund, Holywood-based charity Friends of Asha has developed a professional Toolkit for secondary schools across Northern Ireland which provides important volunteering information as well as an account of past volunteers’ experiences. The charity, which is a support group for the work of Asha in Delhi, India, has five existing partnerships with schools in Northern Ireland. Supported by the Community Fund, which to date has provided funding of approximately £250,000 to a number of local community

projects, Friends of Asha hopes the Toolkit will inspire other schools to sign up to the volunteer programme and establish their own link with Delhi. The Toolkit introduces many of Northern Ireland’s teenagers to the challenges of third world poverty and contributes greatly to their own self-development.

ROGER GETS RELIEF AFTER 10 YEARS OF FOOT PAIN My foot pain started about 10 years ago with pain on the ball of my foot.

The longer I stood and the further I walked the worse it got.

T

he pain in my foot meant that I was constantly buying different types of shoes in an attempt to relieve the pain. This become frustrating and expensive as nothing seemed to solve the problem!

A friend suggested that I try off the shelf orthotics as I have a high arched foot.

This di help initially but then gradually the problem got worse again. The pain then started spreading into my heels. A podiatrist told me about the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic and that they make their own

custom orthotics. I booked an appointment with David Hallowell the Podiatrist at the clinic. David explained what was wrong and outlined the treatment. He took casts for a set of custom orthoses which he said would be an exact fit to the shape of my feet. About 10 days later I got my new supports. The result was fantastic! Within two days I was pain free for the first time in over 10 years and I was able to go for long walks without pain. I cannot recommend David and the team at the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic enough!

Rogers’s foot was a classic high arch foot which was becoming stressed through his midfoot. With this type of foot it is essential that the orthotic fits exactly through the arch area. Well, they either corrupt but we mostly lose them, and it’s definitely not a good feeling when you’ve lost your whole years work with no back up. This has happened to me countless times.”

Mason added: “I realised that I wasn’t the only one who faced this. Probably in fact millions of people are faced with the problem. I knew that I had to do something about this, so I came up with the idea ‘I-Save’.”

East Belfast Quilter Sparkles At UK Quilt Show

Yvonne McKee of Quilters Quest, Belfast won two prizes recently at a prestigious UK quilting show. She won First Prize in the Large Wall Hanging category with her quilt called “Sparkling Beauty.” She also won Quilts UK Overall Runner Up with the same entry.

uilts UK is an eagerly awaited quilt show for the patchwork and quilting enthusiast, and is held at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire, in May each year.

The winning quilt by Yvonne took over a year to make. First, there were over 100 different fabrics to cut and sew into the New York Beauty style blocks. This process took six months to complete.

After that the quilt top was customised

by Yvonne on her Gammill Longarm Quilting Machine. Each area of the quilt required its own quilting design.

At this stage the quilt was washed and then blocked out on a hard surface to ensure it was perfectly square. “Your heart is in your mouth when you put your precious quilt into the washing machine, as you are never quite sure if the colours will run or not. But adding commercial colour protectors to the wash seems to ensure that this does not happen. At least not so far!” said Yvonne. The edge of the quilt was then finished off with a very

fine piped orange binding.

Then the fun began – adding hundreds upon hundreds of decorative Swarovski crystals, which created an importance visual sparkle. “Sometimes it’s hard to know when to stop once you get started with the crystals but I did leave some areas plain so that the eye could rest on those spots,” added Yvonne.

As a final touch, small beads were painstakingly hand sewn around the outside edge of the quilt. This was a true labour of love. You can see the quilt on display at Quilters Quest, 361 Woodstock Road, Belfast.

Quilters Quest opened in 2003 and sells fabric and haberdashery.

Patchwork and quilting classes are taught to over 100 people and there are occasional Saturday workshops as well. The business is run by Yvonne and her daughter Clare. A Longarm Quilting Service is also provided by Yvonne for customers who wish to have their quilt tops professionally finished.

Recent Dog Tick Disease Outbreak Bloody Urine & Fever

You will have heard on the news about the threat to dogs posed by the current outbreak of a serious bleeding disease called Babesiosis. It has spread to England from the continent and is already circulating.”

B

abesia is spread by bloodsucking parasites called Ticks, which attach themselves to a dog or cat and can grow to about the size of a frozen pea. Ticks are becoming increasingly problematic around Dundonald. They cause a painful localised skin infection with almost every bite and can also spread dangerous diseases, such as Lyme disease (already here), and Babesia which is already spreading in England. Naturally, dog owners are feeling anxious about the reported cases. Please check your pet for ticks after walks and if one is found on the body it should be removed as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your dog or suspect any signs such as bruises, weakness, pale gums or “coffee-coloured” urine then please contact us immediately on 028 90 419374. Prevention is always better than cure and we recommend year round parasite control including tick prevention. I want to share with you our revised recommendations on flea and tick control in the light of the outbreak, but first some important points on tick removal.

TICK REMOVAL 1. Ticks should be removed with special Tick Removers (available at reception for £4) or with fine tipped tweezers.

2. They should be grasped as close to the skin as possible and gently and steadily extracted. If using the Tick Removers, a gentle anticlockwise twist can help to loosen the mouthparts.

3. Be very careful not to squeeze the Tick in any way as you could cause it to vomit into your pet or burst releasing body fluids and exposing you and your pet to disease

causing organisms.

4. Never try to burn them, suffocate them, grab them with your fingers, put vaseline on them or any fluids as it will cause them to vomit their gut contents into your pet exposing them to disease.

5. Don’t try to keep them, kiss them, stroke them or play with them because they are not affectionate and will try to attach themselves to you instead or lay eggs and multiply in your garden.

THOUSANDS TO BENEFIT FROM NEW COMMUNITY RELATIONS FUNDING East Belfast organisations are amongst groups sharing in over £1.2million in funding across Northern Ireland

T

he funding is aligned with, and contributes to, the delivery of the NI Executive’s Together: Building a United Community strategy. Over 30 groups tackling sectarianism and promoting understanding across Northern Ireland are sharing in funding from the Community Relations Council.

The funding will support a wide variety of community relations and peace building work, including community relations work with schools involving parents, children and teachers; theatre projects promoting cross-cultural understanding; history projects working across the interfaces in Belfast, cross community sports initiatives; and projects to increase the use of shared space for the arts.

All are designed to promote diverse participation, trust and mutual understanding between political, cultural and religious communities across the region whether they live in rural or inner-city communities.

aspire to. Everyone has a role to play and I have no doubt all the groups receiving this funding will make a real difference and help us to create a society free from division, hate and separation.”

Welcoming the funding, CRC Chief Executive, Jacqueline Irwin said, “This funding is going to support important work across the region to build a more shared and united community using sport, drama, education, training and the arts. It will support activity to build strong bonds of connection and sharing between people of all ages, social and cultural backgrounds in rural areas as well as in our cities. In this way we believe it will also help to build a safer environment for us all.

30th Brownies Willowfield Sew Their Sensational Seeds From Space!

You might remember that the Brownies at the 30th Belfast Brownie Unit, based at Willowfield Church were a few months ago preparing to become space biologists and embark on a voyage of discovery by growing seeds that have been into space.

In September, 2kg of rocket seeds were flown to the International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz 44S where they spent several months in microgravity before returning to Earth in March 2016.

On Saturday 5th June, Orangefield Primary School held their annual PTA Summer Fair.

The sun shone and about 1,000 people turned up to enjoy the multitude of stalls and activities on offer. There was plenty to keep the keen browsers interested with a wide range of local businesses displaying and selling their goods. The children were well occupied and entertained with face painting, nail art, animals, craft activities, football coaching, treasure hunts, a fire engine, bouncy castles and slides, water zorbs, and much much more. The teachers came out victorious for the second year running in the parent/teacher 5 a-side football match! Nobody went home hungry and the smell of crepes, candy floss, bbq and donuts filled the air! The school has an excellent and extremely hard working PTA and a huge amount of effort was put into organising, setting up and running such a super school event, that provides such fun and enjoyment, raises extremely valuable funds and embraces and involves the wider community.

The seeds were been sent as part of Rocket Science, an educational project launched by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency. 30th Belfast Brownies will be one of up to 10,000 schools and youth groups to receive a packet of 100 seeds from space, which they will grow alongside seeds that haven’t been to space and measure the differences over seven weeks.

The Brownies won’t know which seed packet contains which seeds until all results have been collected by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and analysed by professional biostatisticians. Here are some quotes from the Brownies regarding their seed experiment: Explain where & when you will plant your seeds?

At brownies next week, then Brown Owl will keep them at her house and bring them back each week for us to see and measure.

The Story Continues...

Prolific historian Aidan Campbell has just released yet another book to add to his astonoshing tally, this time with a look at Greater Belfast. Heres the lowdown from the launch.

‘Belfast Through Time’ is Aidan Campbell’s latest local history book and it was published on Thursday 26th May 2016 at Hillmount Garden Centre, Gilnahirk. It follows on from the publication of 11 local history books covering areas of East Belfast and 1 on South Belfast.

On this occasion the theme is a journey around Greater Belfast and the book takes a number of views of Belfast from years ago, especially from old postcards, and these scenes are compared with a modern photograph taken from, where possible, the same location.

The launch event was very well attended (standing room only) and once again Hillmount Garden Centre generously provided the excellent venue. Guests were entertained with a lovely cuppa and shortbread and given an opportunity to buy a personally

signed copy of the new book.

ere at Creative Exchange artists’ studios we are always delighted to welcome new artists to east Belfast.

Helping and supporting artists at all stages of their artistic careers is an important part of our remit. Zan Dani is currently our youngest and newest artist member. He recently returned to Belfast following three years studying in England and is now based in the Creative Exchange digital hub. Here he answers some questions about his artistic practice and his reasons for moving back to Belfast to pursue his career as an artist.

“I would call myself a digital artist, I tend to manipulate photos, software or any sort of technology to express myself. If I had a theme or subject that I base my ideas around it would be our ability to think and process. I’m

interested in what happens when parts of our psych break down or simply doesn’t work properly - how do we interact with an altered state of sense and being. As someone who had a terrifying experience of vertigo I’ve always wondered how we process space and depth when our brains are not processing the image properly.

“As someone who loves Klimt and Dali I can’t help but want to produce something that is beautiful!”

I tend to ask these sort of questions by breaking and manipulating technology. As a society we have become more dependant on our gadgets and software that in essence it’s become part of us. By manipulating technology I can express faults in ourselves as humans in a way anyone can understand. I like my practise to be very simple and easy for people to understand. I also make sure my work is entertaining and aesthetically pleasing, As someone who loves Klimt and Dali I can’t help but want to produce something that is beautiful!

I came back to Belfast after university with the intent of not staying here very long at all, but after a few months of volunteering for some galleries in the city I started to see the arts scene in Belfast quite differently. The arts scene in Belfast is very inclusive and I feel

there is an unspoken rule of everyone getting involved. There is so much happening, and in a city this small -if anything it’s difficult to avoid becoming part of it. I found that it was very easy for me to get involved in the art scene here since most art spaces are very open to meeting new artists and helping the creative community try out ideas. Since I’ve been here my primary focus has still been my art practise although recently I have been exploring the technology side of things. I’ve been lucky in that there are so many spaces and events focused on digital technology which I have continuously had the opportunity to get involved with. It’s difficult to say where my practise is going right now but I would like to continue my education here in Belfast and immerse myself into the art community.”

Macmillan Helps People Affected By Cancer In NI Claim Over £14 Million In Benefits

Leann Butcher was working as a part-time secretary, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2012.

T

he 40-year-old single mum from Limavady had noticed a lump and been to see her GP. Tests revealed the cancer had already spread to her lymph nodes and Leann was told she would need surgery, followed by six courses of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiotherapy. Two days before starting chemotherapy, Leann got a letter from her employers, explaining that, because of her part-time contract, she did not earn enough to qualify for statutory sick pay and was not entitled to contractual sick pay. Leann had never claimed benefits before. She’d worked for the same company for twelve years and didn’t know anything about her welfare entitlements. Luckily, her Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist told her where to find the Macmillan Benefits Advice office - just down the corridor in the Sperrin Unit at Altnagelvin Area Hospital, where she was being treated. bThe Macmillan North West Advice team of advisers helped Leann fill in forms and told her which benefits payments she could claim. Looking back, Leann says: “I don’t think I would have got through it all without them. I needed to concentrate on getting better and looking after my little boy, who was only six at the time. But how was I going to pay the bills? Where was the money going to come from? How were we going to cope? I didn’t want to get into debt but couldn’t see a way out. The physical impact of cancer and treatment is hard enough - without the additional pressure of money worries. But the Macmillan North West Advisers were always on hand to help in the hospital, or over the phone.

They helped with all the forms and really got to know me.

In fact, I only went for counselling when they suggested it to me. They could see I was in need of help because they really did listen and care.”

Last year, the Macmillan North West benefits service helped people diagnosed with cancer in the Western Health and Social Care Trust area claim over £4 million in welfare payments1. In Belfast alone, Macmillan CAB advisers helped people with cancer claim over £5 million1. Many of these new claimants say they would not have known about their entitlements without the specialist advice service.

Jean Murray is a Macmillan CAB adviser based at the Mater Hospital in Belfast. She helps clients with benefits checks and applications, as well as more complex case work. Jean says: “Many cancer patients are suddenly faced with a life-changing diagnosis and loss of income, if they or their partner have to stop working.

“Few are aware of which benefits payments they can claim and don’t know where to start because they may never have dealt with our complex welfare system. It can be overwhelming. That’s where we can help. We’re on hand to get the ball rolling, as soon as they are diagnosed. We can help maximise their income with patient grants to help with things like the cost of getting to and from hospital, or heating bills. People going through chemotherapy or radiotherapy often tell me that they feel the cold more, but are worried about paying to keep their homes warm.”

Northern Ireland has the highest level of fuel poverty in the UK and this has resulted in a disproportionate number of cancer patients needing financial help to cover heating bills. Research by Macmillan has found that three out of four people in Northern Ireland find themselves, on average, nearly £300 a month worse off as a result of a cancer diagnosis, due to their reduced incomes and increased expenses.

Barry McVeigh, Macmillan Development Manager in Northern Ireland, says: “Many people are already struggling with the cost of cancer. This situation is only going to get worse because we know that almost half of us will be diagnosed with cancer during our lifetime.

“We’re incredibly proud that our Macmillan Citizens Advice and North West benefits advisers helped cancer patients in Northern Ireland claim more than £14m in welfare payments and grants last year. According to the recent Cancer Patient Experience Survey, which Macmillan helped fund, we know that only two thirds of patients are being told where they can go to get financial help and advice. We would like to see every cancer patient referred for benefits advice to help to stop escalating financial difficulties and worries at a time when people should only have to focus on their health.”

FLOATERS OPTICAL ADVICE

Floaters are those little black spots or something that looks like a hair or small pieces of a cobweb that appear to float in front of your vision.

WHAT ARE FLOATERS? They are collagen fibrils in the jelly in your eye which cast a shadow on the back of the eye so you can see them in front of you. Because they ‘float’ in the jelly of your eye, you will find that if you move your eye to try to look at a floater it will move away in the direction you move your eye. Often you only see the floater if you are staring at a light coloured surface or a clear sky. Some people find that floaters can be a nuisance, but most people become used to them. They rarely cause problems with your vision and my usual advice is to ignore them and not to go looking for them or they might drive you mad.

WHO IS AT RISK OF FLOATERS? Floaters are more common in people who are short-sighted. They may increase if you have had an eye operation such as cataract surgery, or laser treatment after cataract surgery. They also tend to increase in number with age.

WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF I HAVE FLOATERS? Most of the time floaters are harmless and treatment is not usually advised.

Occasionally a sudden increase in floaters – either one or more large ones or a shower of tiny ones – may be a sign of a more serious eye disease such as a retinal detachment. This is when your retina pulls away from the back of your eye. You may also notice flashes of light and a veil or curtain effect over your vision. This change in your vision needs immediate attention.If you notice these symptoms you should contact your optometrist straight away. If you can not do this you should seek urgent attention from the eye casualty department at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

If you have any concerns it is best to make an appointment for a full eye examination to have your eyes checked and regularly monitored by your optometrist.

The oil on the scalp helps the condition of the hair so it’s important especially in summer to shampoo less. By just rinsing your hair it may help to get rid of the excess oil.

TIP 6 Before you jump into the pool on holidays, wet your hair before entering the water because then it won’t absorb as much chlorine, especially for blonde hair as some hair tends to turn green or go dull from the chlorine in the pool.

nti-Bullying Week is coordinated by the Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum (NIABF) and supported by Translink. NIABF is an interagency group hosted by the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) NI and funded by the Department of Education. The event actively involved over 800 schools and youth groups last year and it is anticipated that numbers getting involved in 2016 will increase.

Celine McStravick, Chair of Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum (NIABF) explains why it is important that schools and youth groups register: “Last year over 800 schools and youth groups signed up to take part in Anti Bullying Week. They used the resource pack that is issued upon registration to support them in organising a wide range of events within the school environment to discuss the impact of bullying.

The pack includes presentations, activity plans, project briefs and ABW16 themed posters. Registration only takes a couple of minutes. Almost 3,000 young people entered the Young People’s Competition, which is back this year by popular demand. Participation in the competition provides an opportunity to understand the nature and complexities of bullying behaviour and how

schools work collectively with parents and carers to end bullying. It also highlights key issues in relation to bullying behaviour to both the school and wider community and of course there is the added bonus of prizes for individual winners and a chance to win £250 worth of resources for your school or group.” Celine adds: “All of the activity will explore this year’s theme ‘Together We Are Stronger’. So we’ll be encouraging people to ask: ‘What does it mean to have strength of character?’

‘How can we use our strength for good? And also ‘How can we empower parents and carers to work together with schools to tackle bullying?’ This year we saw the Northern Ireland Assembly consider new anti-bullying legislation and this should become law in the autumn, hence it’s important that we all understand how we can work together to end bullying.”

We actively encourage all of our customers to behave responsibly and treat others with respect. Bullying as a child can have serious consequences on someone’s wellbeing right through adulthood so it’s important we get on board with events such as Anti-Bullying Week 2016 to show zero tolerance for bullying,” said Ursula.

HILLMOUNT HELPS SOUTH BELFAST SCHOOL PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL SPACE EXPERIMENT The garden Centre provided P5 pupils at Downey House with gardening equipment to enable children at the south Belfast prep school to participate in an experiment backed by British Astronaut Tim Peake.

Along with 600,000 children across the UK, the P5 class received their rocket seeds on their arrival back down to earth. Downey House received one red packet and one blue packet of rocket seeds each containing a minimum of 100 seeds. One pack contained seeds that have travelled to space while the other remained on earth. They are being grown side by side for 35 days but, until the end of the experiment, it remains a secret as to whether the red or blue packed seeds actually travelled with Tim Peake. lan Mercer, Managing Director, Hillmount Garden Centre, said: “We host a ‘Kids Gardening Club’ at Hillmount on the first Saturday of every month as we are committed to encouraging young children to learn and enjoy all aspects of horticulture.

We are very excited for the outcome of such an out of this world national campaign and it’s a privilege for us to provide the equipment Downey House needed to help their Space Biologists participation in the experiment lift off.”

Grosvenor Grammar School’s Track And Field Athletes On Fine Form Congratulations to Grosvenor Grammar School’s talented squad of athletes which performed with distinction at the ‘Milk It’ Ulster Schools’ Athletics Championships, at the Antrim Forum on Saturday 21st May. Amongst a string of impressive displays undoubtedly the highlight on the day was the performance of Form One pupil Sarah McCreery, who attained victory in the Mini Girls’ High Jump with an outstanding clearance at 1 metre and 41 centimetres to win the event by an impressive margin of 8 centimetres over her nearest challenger. Elsewhere Form One pupils Robbie Dugan and Dylan McBride also performed impressively to secure silver medals in the Mini Boys’ Long Jump and 800 metres respectively, with Robbie’s jump of 4.64 metres and Dylan’s time of 2 minutes 18.90 seconds both representing performances of the highest calibre which would have been enough to secure gold in many previous seasons. In addition Fifth Former Nathan Chan also attained second place, this time in the Inter Boys’ Triple Jump with a leap of 12.38 metres while, on the girls’ side, the standout

GGS performance came from Lois Hagen, Upper Sixth, who attained second place in the Senior Girls’ 400 metres in a time of 62.31seconds.

Elsewhere bronze medals were achieved

by Joshua Patterson in the Minor Boys’ shot, with a distance of 11.54 metres, as well as Andrew Hagen in the Junior Boys’1500 metres in a time of 4 minutes 34.66 seconds.

So too the Senior Boys’ 4 x 100 metres relay team, comprising Ben Stevenson, Andrew Proctor, Chris Allen and Adam Wilson, also ran impressively to secure bronze in a time of 44.98 seconds, a feat matched by the Junior Girls’ team of Abigail Magill, Victoria Lloyd, Anabelle Fallows and Caylan Blake.

Local History “I am not sure who said this but as we approach the end of season it is worth reflecting on some East Belfast history of both these noble sports. HISTORY IN THE MAKING

DUNDELA FOOTBALL CLUB

‘Dundela Football Club’ was formed in 1895 from employees of a local dairy owned by the Agnew family and members of a local harriers’ club. Wilgar Park has been the home to the club since 1900. The ground is situated at Strandtown and has a capacity of 2,500. The club’s greatest achievement to date (pictured) came in April 1955, when it defeated Glenavon by three goals to nil at Windsor Park, Belfast in the final of the Irish Cup.

GLENTORAN

In this 1938 ‘Glentoran’ team photo Tony Wilkins is the player standing 2nd from left beside the smartly dressed man with the hat. That is probably the team manager or chairman sitting in the centre of the front row also wearing a hat. The man with the army uniform (a sign of things to come) to the far right also seems to be wearing football boots. Tony Wilkins retired from football after breaking his leg when playing for Glentoran against Linfield in 1941.

17th BOYS BRIGADE COMPANY ‘17th Boys’ Brigade Company’ was formed at Belmont Presbyterian Church in 1892 and continued to meet for 60 years until 1952. The Company was successful in winning some of the premier awards of the Belfast Battalion, including the Challenge Flag for Company Drill and the Physical Training Cup, prior to the First World War. This photograph dates to 1934 and it seems that the Company football team have won some more silverware.

GILNAHIRK PRIMARY SCHOOL

‘Gilnahirk Primary School’ has had some success at sport over the years and in 1972 won the Belfast and District Primary Schools Cup. More football success followed in 1990 when they won the East Belfast 7-a-side Cup. The headmaster from 1987-1995 was D.B. Owen (right) and teacher David Huntley is far left. The young man centre who looks happy to be holding the cup was one of Glentoran’s future current star players, Gary Hamilton.

CHERRYVALLEY FOOTBALL CLUB

‘Cherryvalley Football Club’ are pictured here in 1947. The club was formed at the end of the Second World War. Some local boys got together and came to an agreement to use premises owned by a Mr Samuel Barbour who lived in a lane off the King’s Road facing Gilnahirk Road, now known as Kingsdale Park. There was a football pitch which was quite close to the BCDR railway line (now the Comber Greenway) and the team was in one of the local junior football leagues. Although Cherryvalley never won any trophies it was great fun while it lasted. The players trained two or three nights a week so were enthusiastic and fit. The trainer was a man called Billy McBrien (right) and he had played in the Irish League for Larne. He lived in Kingsway Avenue had plenty of time for the football team.

‘East Belfast Football Club’ was founded in 1929. They currently play in Division 1A of the Northern Amateur Football League and are based at Inverary Avenue, in the Tommy Patton Millennium Park, off the Holywood Road.

When this photograph was taken in 1954 the captain was John Darragh (front row, centre with football). The club have had a number of successes in local competitions and won the Northern Amateur League in 1954.

“Tomatoes and onions are so tasty, fresh and healthy. The two contain lots of vitamin C, beta-carotene and liver strengthening nutrients. The olive oil is great for your skin, heart, memory, joints and helps keep you young, all that and it tastes brilliant too.”

275g / 10 slices day-old Italian bread eg ciabatta, thickly sliced 1 medium cucumber, peeled and cut into chunks 5 tomatoes, peeled, deseeded and diced 1 large red onion, finely sliced 1 red pepper, skin removed, thinly sliced 1 yellow pepper, skin removed then sliced 225g good quality olives 20 basil leaves, torn Dressing 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon red or white wine vinegar Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 cloves of garlic crushed • Slice bread and soak in cold water for about 2 minutes.

• Remove and gently squeeze water out with your hands, then remove excess with a clean tea towel.

• Put bread into fridge for 1 hour.

• Heat grill to really hot and roast both peppers cut in half, skin side up until skin blackens, remove to a plastic bag and when cool peel off the skin, collect any juice they shed.

• Cut a small cross on top of the tomatoes, plunge into a jug of boiling water for 20 seconds, remove, and cool and peel skin off.

• Cut tomatoes in half hold over a sieve and bowl, scrap out seeds in sieve.

• Half cucumber and scoup out seeds.

• In a pretty bowl mix together the cucumber, tomatoes, onion, peppers and olives.

• Tear bread into chunks and add to the bowl with the basil leaves.

• Let stand for half an hour.

• Put oil, vinegar, garlic, and juices from tomato and peppers, salt and pepper into a screw top jar. Shake well to combine.

• Pour over the dressing and toss thoroughly. Serve immediately.

• Fry for 3 minutes until golden, turn over and fry for another 3 minutes until cooked and crisp.

• Remove fritters to plate and drain on kitchen paper.

• Keep warm, fry remaining fritters.

• Serve immediately with sweet chilli sauce or other chutney of your choice.

“Increase the vitamin content and add interest by putting some salad leaves and grated vegetables into the pitta bread along with the falafels. As a unit this dish contains quality protein from the chickpeas and yoghurt and is also high in fibre.”

3 tablespoons oil 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 teaspoon ground coriander 325g tin of sweetcorn 6 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced 1 medium egg, lightly beaten salt and pepper 1 teaspoon baking powder sweet chilli sauce from a bottle

2 x 410g tins chickpeas, drained 1 teaspoon cumin 1 onion grated 3 cloves garlic crushed 25g / 1oz fresh coriander leaves ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda 50g / 2oz plain flour 1 large egg beaten 6 tablespoons sesame seeds 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil Packet of wholemeal pitta bread

• Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan, add onion and cook gently for about 8 minutes until softened.

• Add coriander, garlic and chilli and cook for a minute stirring to prevent sticking.

• Remove from heat • Drain sweet corn and tip into a mixing bowl, mash lightly with potato masher to break down a little.

• Add onion mix to bowl with the spring onions and the beaten egg.

• Add salt and freshly ground black pepper and sir really well to combine.

• Sift the flour and baking powder over mixture, stir in.

• Heat another bit of oil in a large frying pan.

• Drop 4-5 heaped tspoons of sweet corn mix in the pan.

• With a spatula flatten each to make a 1cm / ½in

For the tzatziki ½ cucumber, peeled and grated 200g fat-free Greek yoghurt 2 cloves garlic, crushed juice of ½ lemon • In a food processor gradually blend chickpeas, cumin, onion, garlic, coriander, bicarbonate of soda, flour, egg and lots of salt and pepper.

• Keep some texture in the mix.

• Place sesame seeds on a plate.

• Shape into small balls, flatten, roll in the seeds. Chill.

• Mix cucumber with yoghurt, garlic and lemon juice.

• Heat oil in a pan, fry falafels until golden both sides.

• Serve falafels with the tzatziki in warm pitta bread.

Local schools took to the fairways for a range of helath and golf related activities

T

he event commenced with a massive fitness class on the 18th fairway, where all 100 children got their hearts pumping during an energetic aerobics session.

The children then participated in a range of health and golf related workshops to promote the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.

Children then took their first step into the world of golf with putting and golf swing workshops led by the resident PGA Golf Professional, Mr Roy Skillen. The day then culminated in the afternoon with a schools’ golfing competition, where the children put their newly developed skills to the test to compete in the ‘Castlereagh Hills Challenge Cup’.

Presenting the certificates at the event, the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett said, “With growing cases of obesity amongst children, the golf day at Castlereagh Hills Golf Course provides a fantastic forum for young people to enjoy a new sport while learning more about fitness and healthy eating. The children have enjoyed taking part in a number of fun workshops on and off the course, which will hopefully inspire many to take up a new sport or engage in other forms of physical activity.

The Mary Peters Trust has once again provided funding in excess of £42,000 to 80 young athletes from across Northern Ireland, including four local athletes from East Belfast, in order to support and accelerate their sporting careers. In addition to financial support, the athletes, along with their parents, coaches and sports body representatives, were invited to attend the Trust’s biannual Athlete Academy where they heard insights from industry experts on a range of topics. Last year, CLIC Sargent supported more than 280 children and young people with cancer, and their families, from Northern Ireland. After the devastating

shock of diagnosis, CLIC Sargent research shows that children and young people receiving treatment in Northern Ireland can face an average round trip of 88 miles to Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, and 92 miles to Belfast City Hospital to receive treatment.

This can have a huge emotional and financial impact on families. To help minimise this impact, CLIC Sargent offers free accommodation at two Homes from Home, Paul’s House Belfast and Amy’s House. In the last year there were 93 family stays at Paul’s House Belfast, with the average stay lasting 18 days.

FORMER manager Thomas ‘Tucker’ Dougherty was the special guest, as Harland and Wolff Welders held their annual presentation night in their Social Club, Dee Street.

‘Tucker’ was the manager when Welders stalwart Fred Magee came to the club 46 years.

It was quite a good season for the Welders, runners up in Championship 1, just four points behind winners Ards. The Welders also showed their mettle; capturing the Steel and Sons Cup, in what was their last big ‘Christmas Special’ for the foreseeable, given that Championship 1 clubs won’t be taking part in the competition from next season. It does say something, though, that Michael McLellan still won the Leading Goalscorer Award, despite signing for Linfield during the January transfer window. There was a special presentation made by Thomas Flynn to three players who have now reached the 200 game milestone; Michael Dougherty (‘Tucker’s grandson), William Armstrong and Dan McMurray.

There was a trophy treble for Gary Irwin who took the Club and Players’ vote for Player of the Year, as well as receiving the award for the Most Improved Player.

DOUBLE WINNERS AT BLOOMFIELD NATHAN McVeigh and Andrew Binks were double winners as Bloomfield FC held their annual awards dinner in the Stormont Hotel.

Clinton McCreery reflected, “With the squad we have, it’s disappointing how the season went. We fought as well as we could, but results just didn’t go our way but it was close; it came down to goal difference in the end. But with the squad we’ve got, we’re surely capable of going straight back up again. We seemed to be able to beat the better teams, only to drop points against teams down near the bottom!”

CROOKS STEPS DOWN AT SIROCCO

SIROCCO Works held their annual awards dinner in Castlereagh Glentoran Supporters Club. Chairman Gerry Kirkwood, assisted by secretary Daniel Boyd, announced the following winners.

The main news from the Sirocco camp is that Alan Crooks has stepped down due to work commitments. Sirocco would like to thank him for all his efforts at the club. In charge next season will be Tommy Kincaid, the ex Larne and Lisburn Distillery manager. And finally, one year later than originally scheduled, Dixon Park will be ready for the new season, with a Glentoran Select coming to officially open the ground on 26th June.

DUN’S U19’s PIPPED BY LINFIELD DUNDELA’S Under 19s narrowly lost 2-1 to Linfield in the final of the Youth League Cup at Solitude. Disappointment for the young Duns, but it nevertheless is an indication of the bright future the club has at its disposal, making Linfield, widely considered as the best youth team in Northern Irish football, battle all the way for the silverware. It was the young Blues who forced the early pace, with Jonny Malone and Jack Smith both just fractionally off target.

At the other end, Matty Tumilson was posing problems for the Linfield defence, almost playing in Owen Peden in the box.

Stephen Fleck was also catching the eye and was unlucky when his long range drive was pawed away by Linfield netminder Alex Moore; Ben Carson heading over from the resultant corner. Linfield, meanwhile, almost snatched the lead when Gilmore, direct from a corner, hit the upright. The Blues went close again, only for Curtis Brown to make an outstanding last gasp challenge. It was the

Duns, though, who had the last meaningful moment of the half, when Owen Peden was robbed by a well timed challenge from Linfield skipper Adam McCallum. Dundela, however, started the second half just as they had ended the first, on the offensive and this time there was an end product, with Tumilson rifling the ball into the top corner. The Duns, though, were un done when Matty Johnston hammered in the

equaliser. There was another blow when the lively Tumilson, who had been called up for the first team squad towards the end of the season, was forced off with a calf injury.

And the warning signs were there, with Weatherup pulling off an excellent save, to keep out a close range header – before Linfield grabbed what turned out to be the winner; Moore rising high to nod home another corner.
