COME ALONG

TO THE MAY FAIR If your appetite for May revels is whetted by Holywood’s unique May Day event, why not come along to the May Fair on Saturday 7 May at St John’s church, Fort Road, Helen’s Bay. The Fair is open from 11am to 3pm.

Fair PLAY

n addition, a wide-ranging art exhibition is being held in St John’s Church, both at the same hours on Saturday 7 May, and from 6.30 to 7:30 pm on Friday 6 May. Helen’s Bay’s annual May Fair has become a treasured fixture in the social calendar of North Down. There are stalls and entertainments to appeal to young and old alike. For the youngsters, they include a bouncy castle, a visiting fire engine, face painting, and children’s arts and crafts;

I

other attractions include a cake stall, collectables, plants and garden produce, and of course the accompanying tea, tray bakes, burgers and hot dogs which provide necessary, nutritional nourishment. Visitors can even try their hand in the sponge-soaking stakes! Returning by popular demand, is the very talented local harpist, Tanya Houghton, who will be playing a selection of melodies in the church from 11 am on Saturday morning. Tanya performs

with a number of well-known orchestras in Ireland and overseas, and is also a recital soloist. St John’s Church, which is immediately adjacent to the Church Hall, hosts the ever popular exhibition of work by skilled local artists. Most of the paintings, which always cover a wide range of themes, are available for purchase, many at what might be considered bargain prices. There will also be a selection of handmade cards for sale. Rain or shine, the Fair will go on. Primary School ‘High Flyers’ take to the sky at Belfast City Airport Local Primary School pupils enjoyed a special Flybe flight from George Best Belfast City Airport to conclude Bombardier’s action-packed ‘High Flyers’ programme. The trip, supported by the airport’s Community Fund, was the final element of the High Flyer programme which provided pupils with a first-hand experience of flight, a subject they are currently studying as part of the CCEA curriculum. Pictured getting ready for their flight are Amelia Chamerska of Victoria Park Primary School, Luke Cusick of St. Joseph’s Primary School, and Paula Bittles, Executive Assistant at Belfast City Airport.

PICTURE PERFECT

FOR THE HOLYWOOD HARMONY FESTIVAL Hitting the Right Notes To celebrate the second annual Holywood Harmony Festival (formally known as the Holywood Blues and Jazz Festival), Mari Jackson, director of the festival, ran an innovative competition for primary school children in the local area.

ari, an accomplished singer/ songwriter, composed a song ‘The Holywood Song’, which has been recorded and produced and has already received critical acclaim on local radio stations. In the absence of grant aid, ‘The Holywood Song’ is a gift from Mari to the town to help raise much needed funds for the festival. She says, “I wrote this song nearly a year ago and left it sitting unfinished for a long time, but I finally finished it in January and so it was fast-forward to the studio! It is written with tourism and advertising in mind, so it’s an upbeat, radio friendly tune all about the hometown which I love. Locals should be well able to identify with it.” As the festival, which is sponsored by Ulster Weavers, is a community event, Mari wanted it to be all-encompassing and invited local primary schools to paint a picture, which represents Holywood, for the winner’s painting to grace the cover of the CD. The unanimous winner, chosen by the Festival Committee and Garry Jackson from Garry’s Barbers, who sponsored the production of the CD, was 7 year old Lily Barlow from Glencraig Primary

M

Holywood STARS

School. Lily, from Demesne Manor in Holywood, is delighted with her £100 cash prize and winning this prestigious competition. She says; “I was so excited when my teacher Mrs Calwell told me that I won this painting competition as there were hundreds of entries. My mummy Angela and daddy Michael are so proud of me and I’m delighted that I won £100. I’m going to save the money though as when I’m older I want to buy a Jaguar car!” Lily’s painting, named ‘Welcome to Holywood’ was inspired by the Maypole, Johnny the Jig, a guitar, drums, boats and golf, to represent Rory McIlroy. Runner up was 8 year old Tily Stevenson from Sullivan Prep, who is going to save her £40 prize for her summer holiday in France, while joint third places went to 8 year old Roisin Wright from St Patrick’s Primary and John Gracey from Glencraig Primary, who each won £20 cash and their paintings are featured on the inside sleeve of the CD. Roisin explains “I’m going to put £10 in the bank and buy a Beanie Boo with the rest of the money.” John Gracey, from Donaghadee has other ideas for

his big windfall. He says; “I’m so excited that I’ve finally won something and I feel so alive! I’m so shocked and excited. I’m going to buy Lego with my money.” “The Holywood Song” priced at £3 is available from Garrys Barber Shop, High St and various outlets in the Town Centre. All proceeds are going towards the festival. The Holywood Harmony Festival, which last year attracted over 15,000 people from all over Northern Ireland, takes place from Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th June. Headline acts at the festival marquee at Holywood Rugby Club include Rebel Rebel, (The David Bowie Experience) on Friday 3rd June. The Bootleg Beatles, (hailed as the best tribute act ever!) on Saturday 4th June, and a ‘Two For One’ night of both Desperado & Celtic Soul on Sunday 5th June paying homage to The Eagles and Van Morrison. The Swingfellas (songs from the Rat Pack) on Sunday 5th June at Culloden Estate & Spa. Most of Holywood’s town centre pubs, clubs and eateries as well as the Cultra Inn, will be involved this year too with various acts taking part throughout the weekend.

Volunteer stewards are needed for all three nights of the event and of course they get to see the acts for free! If interested please contact Mari asap on 07751575079 or call into Garrys Barber Shop and leave your name and contact details. Tickets are available from www.ticketmaster.ie (under name of act) and Garrys Barber Shop, High St, Holywood. YOUNG HOLYWOOD & BANGOR ENTREPRENEURS TAKE OVER BLOOMFIELD SHOPPING CENTRE Young Enterprise students from the South East area set up shop at Bloomfield Shopping Centre and Retail Park recently. The Trade Fair saw companies started by young people from across the area showcase their products and offer shoppers something different to traditional retailers.

he companies at the Trade Fair include Another Man’s Treasure from Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College, who recycled old, scratched records and used them to create bowls and coasters. Lola Creations from Glenlola Collegiate were also trading at the fair, selling their range of make-up brushes. Schools from the local area had a very successful day, with Another Man’s Treasure from Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College winning the awards for Best Overall Company, and Best Social Enterprise, while Polaris from Sullivan Upper went home with the Mystery Shopper Award. The Best Overall Team Award went

to Taddyho Productions from Tor Bank School. On the day, the students not only had to impress customers, but also a panel of judges, with a variety of awards up for grabs. This year, Young Enterprise introduced a Social Media award, which was won by Generation from Friends’ School in Lisburn, who receive the most re-tweets on the day of the fair. Paula Ault, Business Development Executive at Signal Centre of Business Excellence, commented “Ards and North Down Borough Council is pleased to participate in the Young Enterprise Annual Trade Fair in Bangor. Ards and North Down has an entrepreneurial spirit,

with over 4,200 local businesses contributing to the area’s robust economy. “The trade fair provides local students with the opportunity to test their entrepreneurial talents. It is also a great opportunity to showcase the young entrepreneurial talent in the borough. The range of products and services that get created as part of this programme is always commendable and this year’s students have come up with some great products.” Pete Feldman, Managing Director at Grafton Recruitment, who also judged at the fair, said “I very much enjoyed being part of the day and seeing the innovative ideas and trading strategies

that these young entrepreneurs have come up with. Having judged at Young Enterprise events before, I have been thoroughly impressed at the creativity, passion and commercial acumen of these young adults. Young Enterprise programmes provide a fantastic opportunity work in a real business environment, which helps develop important skills for future employment. And will benefit the economy in year to come.”

HEALTh BEAUTY WELLBEING

TRUST ME ON THE SUNSCREEN BRONZING MADE SIMPLE

PREP

DRINK

Firstly, your skin is an organ, like your heart, you need to look after it. It’s the only one you’re going to be given and if you don’t look after it, it will show. Let’s say someone kindly gifts you a beautiful houseplant and now you have the immeasurable pressure to keep the gift alive. You put it on the windowsill and within a week you have forgotten it’s even there. When you do remember, the leaves are drooped, wizened, they have brown patches. THAT is your skin without water and too much sunlight.

Your skin will love you for it. Externally, for your skin to look its best, twice a week do a salt/ sugar body scrub, body brush (super amazing for cellulite) and moisturise. Nothing is more enjoyable than getting the time to do this. (For the face do exfoliate but use something super gentle! I like a Gommage, this doesn’t have grains but exfoliates using AHAs – amazing for skin brightening and hydration).

And if getting time at home is against you, treat yourself to the salon experience – you get the job done and you get some time to yourself surrounded by candles, floaty music and you don’t have to clean the bath after! If you get the above bit right, the next bit is easy. SUN @ HOME

More than likely, to have an even tan you will have to fake it! Most NI tans are slightly pink and patchy! So here’s my top tan for faking it! It is impossible to look past pHenomenal by Vita Liberata. It is actually a phenomenal tan, here’s the facts you need to know:

LASTS UP TO 4 TIMES LONGER THAN REGULAR TANS / INCREDIBLY EASY TO APPLY EVEN FOR THE NOVICE TANNER / SUPER FAST DRYING SO YOU CAN REDRESS IMMEDIATELY / IT CONTAINS ODOUR REMOVETM FOR ZERO SMELL / CERTIFIED ORGANIC BOTANICALS AND MOISTURE LOCKING SYSTEM / GUARANTEE A PERFECT FADE BACK TO NOTHING.

To match chest to face – Trystal3 applied to neck, face, décolleté is beautiful! This is the worlds first self tanning bronzer. Oil – free with micronised crystals for sheer, lightweight bronzing coverage and added DHA for a lasting tan result, this unique bronzing powder will leave you with soft, smooth, healthy looking skin. Team these together and it looks effortless and lasts really well and you will not smell like a digestive biscuit! SUN AWAY

For your BODY, I love Ultra Sun for my sun protection. If you’re prone to prickly heat this seems to work well. They have a really beautiful tinted SPF 30 for the face, so you are getting good protection and you don’t feel totally naked without any foundation! For your EYES another little trick is to either get an eyelash tint or take it

up a gear with LVL Enhance eye treatment! The modern day eyelash perm that gives you length, volume and lift! It’s a total winner for those who love the drama and not the damage, cost and maintenance of extensions! Winner if you’re in the water lots! For your FACE - Whilst in the sun, there is a wee bit more time to have

some you time! I always pack a hydrating face mask, Yon-Ka’s Masque No 1 is impressive! Leave it on overnight for 96% rehydration of face, neck, décolleté! And finally… I hope that all doesn’t sound like a lot of work! Main thing is just have fun, make happy memories and ‘trust me on the sunscreen!’

Jill @ ReFound

If you have an old cherished piece that you just can’t part with, then upcycling, upstyling or re-purposing it is a great way to save its soul while not jeopardizing your interior style. Jill from ReFound shows you how...

UPCYCLE

‘RE UPHOLSTERED SEAT PAD & PAINTED CHAIR’

epurposing old picture frames into chalk boards or corkboards, Save old glass jars and tins to use as herb garden containers; or attach to a wood panel to hold pens and paints, Update furniture by giving it a makeover with wallpaper, paint or even fabric coverings, Get an industrial look by adding castors to a coffee table or vintage box – makes a great toy box! Stepping out of your comfort zone, you might like to try: Sink storage unit: cut a hole in the top and back of an old dresser and plumb the sink into the top. It’s a really funky way of using old mahogany or dark wood pieces If you have a random set of chairs, you could try painting them the same colour and reupholstering the seat pads. The shapes might be different but they are held together by the colour theme – a nice quirk for your dining table. Lights are one of the easiest things to upcycle. You can create a quirky light out of just about anything. But you do need some wiring skills! Or buy the ready-to-go flex and plug. Of course, some upcycling doesn’t necessarily require any action – just use it in a different way. It’s as simple as that. You’ll never look at your waste in the same way again! www.refoundonline.com

‘REFOUND CHAIRS AND TABLE – PAINTED UPSTYLE’

There is so much you can do with just about every item, the only barrier will be having the tools and skill to do some of the upcycling you might need! If you keep it basic however, there is plenty you can do very easily;
