HILL CLIMB 2015
The legendary Cultra Hillclimb will race back to Cultra Manor in the grounds of the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum on Saturday 13th June
C
ultra is the world’s oldest active hillclimb, which turns 110 this year after being established by the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club on 6 May 1905. The unique partnership between the Thoroughbred Sports Car Club NI (TSCCNI) and the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum allows this piece of motoring heritage to be celebrated in an inimitable way. This year the event will celebrate the ‘Road to Recovery’ on Saturday 13 June, with restored vehicles of all shapes and sizes firing up the hill to compete for the best speed throughout 10 different classes, as well as open restoration workshops, historic displays and even the odd competitor who is currently on the road to recovery himself! Trevor McIlroy, a long-time Hillclimb competitor and a household name in the Northern Ireland motoring scene has recently undergone knee surgery, and the former Cultra award winner will be making his highly anticipated comeback in his well-known Austin Healey Sebring Sprite on June 13. Alongside the competitive action on the hill, spectators will be able to enjoy special demo runs, including a fleet of Ford MK2 Escorts to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the car

We are pleased to welcome people of any age and background including students who are interested in volunteering. Our volunteers always say they would encourage anyone thinking of volunteering to give it a go as you will never regret it!” Barnardo’s depends on the income from its shops to support its work with children and young people across Northern Ireland who are less-advantaged and vulnerable. Barnardo’s also provides counselling for children who have been bereaved and provides training for professionals to raise awareness of the signs of child sexual exploitation. Little Citizens
ittle Citizens Boutique, a Holywood, County Down start-up currently participating on Invest Northern Ireland’s Propel programme, has been listed in the Guardian ‘Start up of the Year’ showcase series, published this month. The feature recognises the most ambitious, disruptive start-up businesses in the UK annually. County Down based Alicia Peyrano set up Little Citizens Boutique to help parents prepare their kids for the 21st century with toys that develop the imagination, creativity and problem solving – valuable skills for use in later life. Alicia has recently been accepted onto Invest Northern Ireland’s Propel programme, aimed at developing ambitious, export-focussed start-ups with
the passion and energy to compete on an international stage. Alicia was inspired to set up her own business when she became a mother and felt there was a lack of options when it came to finding high quality, unique children’s toys and gifts: “So many toys and clothes today for children feel and look mass produced and are almost disposable in nature as opposed to unique and special. I took the plunge to set up my own business, Little Citizens Boutique, to create an online store that was entirely dedicated to unusual, beautiful brands of toys and clothing. All our toys and gifts are centred on encouraging creativity, inspiring imagination and stimulating play and we source them from some of the

most interesting designers and brands across the world. Our website tells the stories behind our design partners in order to give consumers a real insight into where their purchase is coming from.” Alicia applied to be a part of the 2014/15 Propel programme, in the hope that she would be able to make her new business the number one online destination for independent toys. “I was lucky enough to make it through to the second phase of Propel and am now focused on gaining as much knowledge from the experience as I can. The workshops and one on one mentoring are two aspects of the programme I am particularly excited about – it is rare to get access to such expertise.”

Original Irish Yew CREAT ES SEA M ONS T ER AT MOUNT STEWART The intricate yew topiary at the world famous Mount Stewart gardens in County Down has delighted visitors for decades and now the National Trust has installed a new piece to rival them all.

T
he intricate yew topiary at Mount Stewart gardens in County Down has delighted visitors for decades and now the National Trust has installed a new piece to rival them all. The fourteen foot high sea creature from Celtic mythology known as a Fomorian was created by local artist Terry Dorrian. Fomorians were mythological half human, half sea monster creatures associated with the waters of the Celtic fringe including Strangford Lough (Loch Cuan). Planted at the base of the new sculpture is an Irish yew which was taken as a cutting from the original ancient Irish yew in Florence Court, County Fermanagh. The yew will take years to grow over the new structure, bringing it to life in the centre of the garden. Mount Stewart’s topiary pieces are more than
16 LOOPMAG.NET
just attractive designs explains Paul Stewart, Mount Stewart Garden and Park Manager: “The painstakingly clipped figures that surmount the trefoil shaped hedge around the Shamrock Garden tell the story of the Stewart family’s arrival in Ulster from Scotland to hunt for a stag. The pieces are rich in allegory with creatures from Celtic myth and historical symbols from the region all represented, including wellknown pieces such as the topiary Irish Harp and the Red hand of Ulster planted out annually in scarlet bedding. This new installation replaces a giant anteater topiary piece which died a few years ago. As the yew tree grows it will be meticulously trained around the framework of the Fomorian sculpture and clipped to shape, standing guard over the Shamrock Garden for many
years to come.” This new installation would not have been possible without the generous donation from National Trust supporters Mr and Mrs Graham Gund from Massachusetts, USA. The Fomorian was inspired by drawings in the margins of the book, Queen Mary 1st ‘Book of Hours’ (Queen Mary’s Psalter), from which Edith, Lady Londonderry drew inspiration when she created Mount Stewart Gardens. The installation of the impressive topiary follows the successful completion of the £8m restoration project at Mount Stewart. Visitors to the house can now enjoy previously unavailable rooms and hundreds of internationally significant items. For more information nationaltrust.org.uk/mount-stewart

athy was over the moon by the results and success of the team. Cathy said “The world championships was held in Latvia and was a very high standard with many countries from all over the world. The atmosphere was tremendous and we were well looked after the whole trip. I took a young team away of six and they trained hard. The preparation was non stop for four month’s and they were all in great shape and fitness. Sol Boyles, from East Belfast defended his world title and remained current “World Champion”. Sol, won Gold in the under 16 year boys category. Sol, showed great determination and skill winning the final bout 6-1. Sol is a superb athlete and put his heart and soul into the training and both his fitness and speed had increased massively and it showed on the mat, when competitors could not keep up with him. Sol, also went on to win a sliver medal in Kata and really wanted a double gold, but wasn’t far off at all, coming home with a gold and silver. Sol’s younger brother also competed in his first World Karate Championship’s and is following in his big brothers foot steps. Christian Boyles achieved a bronze in the under 13year old boys category. by his team mates Sol and Fergus. Fergus McMullan was ranked 4th in the worlds and was very unlucky not to be placed in the medal position. He was 4-3 up and winning, with only 4 seconds on the clock and referee called a decision, which many disputed wasn’t a score. Unfortunately, the referee went with decision giving the Italian the final result. Fergus showed true form, fitness, skill and deserved to get through to semi finals. However, he took it on the chin and is more determined than ever now. Fergus competed in NIFMA on Sunday 7th June and is currently in training for this with coach Cathy McAleer. The Northern Ireland girls, also put up a tremendous performance. Lucy Ouldfield was narrowly put out in the final’s against Russian opponent by one point. Lucy took some big knocks and it didn’t stop her form fighting her way through to the final and lifting a World Silver Medal. Team mate Effie Ellis O’Neil, only 15 years of age achieved bronze in Kata and bronze in kumite. The bout went to extra time and first to score. Effie was unlucky with Italian just nipping in front to take the final score. Effie was really pleased with her performance and results. Thanks to Grange Wine Merchants, for the first time, wine enthusiasts will be able to enjoy wine by the glass without committing to the whole bottle. Coravin ground-breaking wine access technology leaves the cork in place, safeguarding the wine from oxidation thus allowing the wine to evolve naturally. First, a thin, hollow needle passes through the foil and cork to access the wine. Then the bottle is pressurized with argon, an inert gas in the air we breathe that winemakers have been using for years. The argon pressurization pushes the wine through the needle so that it flows into your glass without letting any oxygen in the bottle. Once the needle is removed, the cork naturally reseals itself, and the remaining wine continues to evolve naturally. Now wine lovers can enjoy and
share the same bottle during multiple occasions, over weeks, months or even longer without wasting a drop. The Coravin System also enables wine drinkers to access wine across multiple bottles during a single occasions. • The cork stays in. Oxygen stays out • Sip, share and enjoy fine wines without wasting a drop. • Compare and contrast – taste across multiple bottles comparing vintages and varietals • Serve both red and white wines with different courses during dinner • Make any night a celebration by enjoying finer bottles by the glass • Pour any magnum from around the world • Taste your favorite wines, and monitor them as they age, noting the subtle changes in their evolution, then return to them again later at the peak of their perfection

SUMMER PARTY DRINKS BY DEMELZA FROM
81 Holywood
Let Demelza sort the most important aspect of any summer soiree, the liquid refreshments!
RASPBERRY LIMONCELLO PROSECCO “Amazingly refreshing, bubbly, and sweet - a perfect summer cocktail that you can make in just 5 minutes!”
INGREDIENTS 1 bottle prosecco, chilled 25 cl limoncello liqueur, chilled 36 raspberries 6 sprigs fresh mint
THE BEST SANGRIA “Bold recipe title coming from a passionate (and opinionated!) sangria lover. But I’ll stand by it. This really is the best sangria recipe I have ever tasted…… so far and it’s all thanks to one secret ingredient….ROCKET! I have to admit that I did a double-take too when I saw my favourite green floating in a beautiful pitcher of red sangria on my last trip to spain.. Sure enough, it was brilliant. So good, in fact, that I had to come home and make it for my friends. And now its going on the menu in Eighty One.”
INGREDIENTS METHOD In a large jug, whisk together prosecco and limoncello. Serve over raspberries, garnished with mint, if desired. You can also toss in some raspberries or strawberries for that elegant touch – either way, these cocktails go perfectly for a summer party or an added bonus to get you through the week.
2 (750 mL) bottles dry red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot 80 mls brandy 200 grams sugar 60 mls cup orange liqueur 500 grams strawberries, hulled and halved 3 oranges, thinly sliced 3 limes, thinly sliced 2 lemons, thinly sliced large handful of rocket (optional) 1 can lemonade
METHOD Stir together wine, brandy, sugar and orange liqueur in large pitcher, until sugar is dissolved. Stir in the Rocket, and use a wooden spoon to muddle (crush) the rocket so that the flavour is released. Add strawberries, lime, lemon and orange to the wine mixture, and lightly mull the fruit to release juices. Cover and refrigerate for anywhere from 2-24 hours. Stir in lemonade if desired, then strain and serve over ice.
ICED COFFEE BAILEYS “I really enjoy drinks that are typically reserved for “daytime.” I ran across this recipe, and it seemed amazing especially since I’m a big fan of a baileys coffee!”
METHOD Make your favourite coffee, let it cool, pour it into ice cube trays and freeze. Fill a glass with the cubes, then top it up with Baileys…….delish……Enjoy!

JUNE 20 15
DIABETES WEEK To herald Diabetes week this month on 14th-20th June, Liam Burns MPS of Burns Pharmacy, Holywood takes a look at the condition.
14th-20th June
T
here are currently over 2 million people in the UK with diabetes, with
an estimated 750,000 who are yet to be diagnosed. Diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body use glucose (sugar) in the blood. When there isn’t enough insulin produced glucose levels become too high. There are two common types of diabetes. In Type 1 the body cannot produce any insulin whilst in Type 2 the body makes some insulin but not enough to break the glucose down. Type 1 has a strong genetic link and is more likely to develop if family members have it and usually occurs before reaching 40. Type 2 also has a genetic link and the risk grows as you become older, it is also associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and with being overweight or obese. The most obvious symptoms of diabetes include becoming more thirsty and needing to pass urine more frequently. If you are more fatigued than normal, this can also be a sign of diabetes. 26 LOOPMAG.NET
HOW CAN YOUR LOCAL PHARMACY HELP?
