WHALLEY FINE ART, HOLYWOOD PRESENTS: EAST BELFAST ARTIST EDDIE MILLAR EXHIBITION AT TITANIC VISITORS CENTRE

Encapsulating 3 years of work on a variety of narratives based on the life and times of the Harland & Wolff shipyard, from a welders point of view.

W

halley Fine Art are very pleased to announce they will be holding an exhibition for East Belfast artist Eddie Millar entitled “Queens Island, the ships and the people” in the Andrew’s Gallery based in the Titanic Visitor Centre, Belfast in April 2015. The show will encapsulate 3 years of work on a variety of narratives based on the life and times of the Harland & Wolff shipyard, from a welders point of view. Eddie has been working from his studio in East Belfast for over 25 years now and has

an amazing capability of capturing lost moments in time by way of portraiture. His life and times as a messenger boy when he was 15 years old and later in life as a welder has lead him to produce over 45 pieces of work for his up and coming show. The exhibition encapsulates both original oil paintings and oversized pencil sketches. One of the highlights of the show is a large piece made up of four 6ft x 4ft canvasses depicting workers going about their daily lives as ship builders. The exhibition is set to bring

an insight into the lives of the people that worked their and the lost stories of ‘the yard’. Whalley Fine Art will also be publishing a catalogue to coincide with the opening of the Exhibition illustrating the paintings in the show and telling the stories of the folks that worked there. The catalogue will also be available to purchase through various outlets following the exhibition which is set to be one of the most exciting and thought provoking exhibitions to be held in Belfast over the past decade!

HOLYWOOD EDITION #4/APRIL 2015

INTRODUCING THE HOLYWOOD HUB! A brand new website is set to revolutionise how the organisitions and people of Holywood communicate.

WHAT IS IT? The Holywood Hub is a website that is currently being constructed. When it goes live, it will offer quick and easy access to all the various organisations, charitable societies, clubs, businesses, schools, churches and other bodies in the Holywood area. It will have information about these different bodies, their aims and purposes, contact details and will provide details of up-coming events/ activities and news about what is going on across the Holywood area. It will be a constantly updated interactive notice board for both the people of Holywood and all those interested in what is going on in and around the town.

WHAT MAKES IT SO WORTH HAVING? Nothing like it exists at present, which means that it is difficult to find out what Holywood offers and/or what events or activities are being planned. It is also difficult to know 16 LOOPMAG.NET

JOIN THE HUB whether information available is accurate and up-to-date. The really attractive feature of this website is that the registered organisations can continue to post up-to-date news about their activities and information about the special events they are planning, complete with full details about where and when they are happening.

WHO RUNS IT? The website has been created by Ardmore Advertising, but is owned by the local community via Holywood Shared Town. A small group of unpaid volunteers who are working on the project are accountable to Holywood Shared Town. It does not depend on grants from any public bodies, and needs to self-financing, but plans are already being made to secure its future.

As often as they want, registered organizations will then be able to contribute additional information about their activities and plans. HOLYWOOD CHAMBER RAISES £660 FOR SIMON COMMUNITY AT CHARITY LUNCH Steven Agnew MLA, Peter Boyle, David Menary, Brian Shanks, Lady Hermon MP, David Sloan MBE, John Hogg

/// HOLYWOOD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE recently held a charity lunch at Royal Belfast Golf Club where members and guests raised a staggering £660 for Simon Community NI.

“O Connor Browne, Ashling McKeown, Darren Rainey & Michael Rodgers

ur guest speaker was Strabane born entrepreneur, Peter Boyle from Argento Contemporary Jewellery. Peter provided members and guests with an entertaining potted history of how, as a student, he started trading mirrors at music festivals and then on to selling silver jewellery outside the Reform Club in Belfast. He opened his first shop in Belfast in 1997 and as he said himself, he is “aggressively ambitious.” That’s quite clear as Argento is now the fastest growing online jewellery department store in the UK and Ireland and they are the UK & Ireland’s single biggest Pandora retailer. Argento has also recently opened its’ 50th shop on Holywood’s High Street. Holywood Chamber of Commerce is also proud to report that since 2004 we have raised over £9,000 for good causes from our charity lunches.”

ART IN THE PARK 2015

“This years event was great success! The weather was cold but it was a bright day made even brighter by the enthusiasm and creations the attendees put together. The gazebos set the scene and the music was set up under one of them to soundtrack the days activites. The hot soup was very welcome as were the sausage rolls and cocktail sausages. The kids enjoyed the day and their goody bags too.” Pauline Millar Community Programme Worker

borough and during the year 2013 to 2014 this rose to £45,080.23. Mr Easton said he was ‘deeply shocked’ to discover that the Executive had spent over £88,000 on removing graffiti from its properties across North Down over the last two financial years. He added, “At a time when departments are struggling to find money with cutbacks, the last thing the Housing Executive needs to be doing is having to waste money removing graffiti put there by silly individuals who are costing the ratepayers of North Down a lot of money.

“This is money that could be spent in a better way, such as providing homes or indeed doing essential repairs to infrastructure. “Those responsible for graffiti need to wise up and stop this as they are hurting the ratepayers of North Down. “I believe the only way to reduce incidents of graffiti is to impose tougher fines and community service on those caught and make them remove their handiwork.” Mr Easton’s Assembly question asked the Minister for Social Development to detail the cost of removing graffiti from Housing Executive properties in North Down in each of the last two financial years. The minister replied that the Housing Executive had advised him that the cost of removing graffiti from their properties in North Down was as follows - 2012/13, £43,267.15 and 2013/14, £45,080.23. CAMPHILL COMMUNITY GLENCRAIG IN THE RUNNING Nicola Branagh, Business Development Manager, Action Renewables joins this year’s Action Renewables Association Awards sponsors Ross McConnell (left), Renewable Energy Manager at Vayu and James Pringle, Partner, Tughans to announce the shortlisted local businesses and organisations in the running for taking home an iconic Action Renewables Award on 27th March. We’ll have an update in the next edition.

CAMPHILL COMMUNITY GLENCRAIG CELEBRATED As Action Renewables Awards Shortlist Revealed Community organisation shortlisted in the 2015 Action Renewables Awards in the category of Best Community Renewable Energy Project.

A

cknowledged for their use of renewables in the form of a wood biomass boiler capable of burning wood biomass up to 65% moisture – much of which would otherwise go to waste – and displacing up to 250,000 litres of heating oil annually with a carbon savings of 600 – 700 tonnes per annum. In addition to relying on biomass to heat the water used for a number of buildings on the site including 17 residential units, a training

college, school building for children with learning disability, craft workshop, office building and more, The Camphill Community Glencraig also features a well-established forest school initiative which enables children and young adults from local schools to learn by doing outdoor activities in the woodlands of the community. Now in their seventh year, these industry awards, sponsored by Tughans Solicitors and electricity supplier Vayu, are gearing up for their biggest year yet, set to take place at the historic Belfast Harbour Commissioner’s Office. The awards recognise and reward leading examples of renewables in practice across NI. The independent judging panel was made up of industry experts and leaders in the field of renewables from across Northern Ireland including: Andy McCrea, Managing Director, Renewables

Connect; Carol Forster, Operations Manager, Northern Ireland Environment Link; Geraint Ellis, Chair of Environmental Planning at Queen’s University; Jim Kitchen, Director, Sustainable NI; and Terry Waugh, Deputy Director, Action Renewables. To accommodate the growing and diverse number of renewables advocates in Northern Ireland, this year’s awards include new categories, with Most Environmentally Sustainable Construction Project, Most Successful Renewable Heat Installation and Most Successful Renewable Electricity Installation added to the existing list of Best Renewables Installation within the Education, Healthcare and Public Sector, Best Community Renewable Energy Project, Best Planning for Renewable Energy Project and Best Promotion of Sustainable Transport categories.
