The Lake Walk and wonderful new art installations will come alive to the sound of mystical music and shimmering colour. And you can also take a peek inside the recently restored family home to see a selection of rooms revealed in a new light. LED orbs lighting up the walk ways, dazzling art installations by local artists in the gardens and in some of the rooms in the recently restored house, it will be a magical winter experience not to be missed. Our tipis will house local producers offering up festive treats and visitors can take in the ethereal atmosphere whilst relaxing by the open fire - don’t forget to bring your marshmallows to toast!” Tickets are now on sale and booking is essential, call 0844 249 1895 or visit nationaltrust.org.uk/mountstewart. Holywood Author Continues Book Series With His Latest Launch HOLYWOOD AUTHOR, WILLIAM LONG, CONTINUES HIS NEW SERIES OF THE TIMECRACK ADVENTURES WITH THE RECENT PUBLICATION OF THE SECOND BOOK, COPANATEC.

I

nvited to give a reading of his first book, Timecrack, to a group of dedicated readers of the genre, during a Sci-Fi and Fantasy evening at Waterstone’s, Bill’s book was well received, and both books are now available in their Belfast bookstore.Keeping to a busy schedule, including the writing of the third book in the Timecrack series, Bill was also invited to give a talk in the Holywood Library, to a group of pupils from the Sullivan Upper School who had used

the books as a class project over a number of weeks, before their summer break. As Bill commented to Jo Quinn, the senior librarian: ‘I was very impressed by the work they had put into their project, especially by the penetrating questions they put to me about the story. And it is particularly gratifying in this digital age to see so many young people making use of our library services.’ Bill’s Timecrack books have been reviewed and

recommended by a crosssection of young and older readers, including Karen Maitland, the bestselling author, and Martin McCullough, night editor of the Daily Mirror. Along with the recent publication of an eBook for aspiring authors, 10 Tips On Writing Your First Book, and with another Timecrack book in the pipeline, Bill looks set to be very busy in the coming months. His publications are available through www.williamlongbooks.com

New Dream Doors Showroom Brings Low Cost Kitchen Makeovers To Belfast A new Dream Doors showroom has opened on the Lisburn Road, bringing low cost and high quality kitchen makeovers to Belfast and the surrounding area.

D

ream Doors, is the UK’s largest kitchen makeover retailer and the Belfast showroom is its first in Ireland. The new store will be run by local resident Jon O’Hara and his partner Sarah (pictured). Jon will also hold the Dream Doors master licence in Ireland, with a remit to find additional franchisees both here and the Republic of Ireland. The new showroom was opened in a gala champagne ceremony by Dream Doors MD, Troy Tappenden. The Dream Doors kitchen retail franchise has a presence in almost 60 UK towns and provides a kitchen makeover service at a fraction of the cost of a full re-fit, by replacing cupboard doors and work surfaces to create a completely fresh look. “Dream Doors has been hugely popular all over 6 LOOPMAG.NET

Scotland, England and Wales and I think people are going to relish the chance to get a kitchen makeover without weeks of hassle and disruption and at a far more affordable price,” said Jon O’ Hara, Dream Doors Belfast, showroom owner. “Lisburn Road is a wonderful location for the first Dream Doors showroom in Ireland, but Belfast really is just the start – in a few years there will be Dream Doors franchises all over Northern Ireland and the Republic.” Jon O’Hara joins Dream Doors after a long career in retail, working for brands such as Dream Beds and Currys. At Dream Beds he was an area manager with responsibility for all aspects of operations. As well as its kitchen makeover service, Dream Doors will also design and fit an entire new kitchen, as well as offering a host

of integrated appliances. All its doors are made-to-measure and of the highest quality, coming in a variety of different styles and colours to suit all tastes. “Dream Doors is a simple concept that works brilliantly well. Everyone loves their kitchen – it’s the most important room in the house for many people – but not everyone can afford the price of a full re-fit,” continued Jon O’Hara. “By offering a kitchen makeover we can transform the appearance of someone’s kitchen in less than 48 hours. We’ve already had fantastic feedback from our preshowroom customers and look forward to delivering an even better service now our new showroom is open.” Call Jon for a FREE Quote on 02890 994896. 220 Lisburn Road (opposite Tesco) www.dreamdoors.co.uk

Local Girl Embarks on Challenge for Urgent Cause Moya Mawhinney TALKS US THROUGH WHAT INSPIRED HER TO TAKE ON THIS SPECIAL CHALLENGE FOR PERSONAL AND CHARITABLE REASONS

“The moment news started to spread about the Syrian and Refugee Crisis, I felt urged to do something about it. I am a keen runner and thought the Titanic 10K Runher would be the perfect opportunity for both a personal challenge and to fund raise for a very pressing cause. I enlisted my running buddy, Anna Best, to

help and encouraged friends to join in the run as well. I researched the charities directly helping the refugees and was drawn to the work Save the Children were doing. I was shocked to discover the scale of the crisis and how over 7,600 children have arrived in Italy after the perilous journey, with no parents or family. Save the Children are working in both the origin countries, like Syria, and along the route taken by refugees through, for example, Turkey and Greece. Here, they provide shelter, food, water and medical supplies for refugee

children and their families. We have started raising money by getting people to sponsor us or donate to our fundraising page http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/runforrefugees. In our school, Sullivan Upper, we have organised for a number of bun sales to take place just before the run in October, where we will be putting on the aprons to make as many buns and cookies as possible to sell them to everyone. We hope to raise as much money as possible and if you could donate anything to this worthy cause, please visit our fundraising page.”

Fundraising manager Jennifer McGivern was delighted with the local support for the charity. On behalf of Young Enterprise and all the young people with which we work I’d like to thank everyone who took part and our supporters who helped to make the event a success.” Young Enterprise Northern Ireland is a charity developing the entrepreneurial skills and aspirations of young people aged four to 25 to prepare them for the new economy. They develop the skills of young people to ensure they leave education prepared for life and work. Working in partnership with education and business they engage with 100,000 young people each year. Krizzah Clinches FILM Council Position Ashfield Girls Pupil Selected for Into Film’s National Youth Advisory Council

15

year old Krizzah Policarpio, a pupil at Ashfield Girls’ High School, has been selected as one of only 15 young people from all over the UK to be a member of Into Film’s National Youth Advisory Council. Being part of the Youth Advisory Council, Krizzah will act as an ambassador who will contribute to the work of Into Film – an education charity which is supported by the BFI with Lottery funding and further supported in Northern Ireland by the Dept of Culture, Arts & Leisure. She will meet likeminded young people who also have a keen interest in film and will enable her to gain valuable skills and experience which will be of great benefit to Krizzah who has told us “I am delighted to have been selected, as I am currently studying GCSE Media Studies and Moving Image Arts and this will help me greatly with my studies”. Krizzah will travel to London to attend 6 meetings per year- a great experience in itself. Tracy Rossborough, Head of Media at Ashfield Girls’, said, “This is a wonderful opportunity

12 LOOPMAG.NET

for Krizzah and it is a great accolade for the school. Krizzah has been a member of our film club for 4 years, and it is the dedication of pupils like Krizzah which enabled Ashfield to win the title of Into Film Club of the Year at the prestigious Into Film Awards held in London earlier this year. Krizzah was also involved in Into Film’s Inclusion and Belonging Project and it is really encouraging to see young people’s efforts being rewarded”. Into Film launched nationwide in Northern Ireland in 2014 - with 652 film clubs currently running in schools and non-school settings such as youth clubs and care organisations - and its programme provides a raft of opportunities for children and young people to engage with film critically and creatively. It is part of a UK wide programme that seeks to place film at the heart of the educational and personal development of 5-19 year-olds across the UK. Film clubs and other activities through the Into Film programme are available to all schools across NI providing all young people, regardless of

their background or ability, with opportunities to learn through film and about film. Tackling social exclusion by enabling young people, many from rural and disadvantaged communities, to access the power of cinema inside and outside the classroom for the first time, and nurturing the potential for creative industry careers, are the primary aims of the programme. Earlier this year, Belfast-based Ashfield Girls School won the ‘Into Film Club Of The Year: 13s and Over’ category at the inaugural Into Film Awards. Originally part of the film club pilot in Northern Ireland, this club has been running for over three years with 25 committed members and was recognised for its inclusivity and enthusiasm. Ashfield Girls is situated in a socially deprived area and the teachers use film as a way to raise aspirations, help pupils achieve and give them new opportunities normally unavailable to them. With the support of Northern Ireland Screen, Into Film delivery partners in Northern Ireland include Cinemagic and The Nerve Centre.

WILLS MONTH IS BACK THIS OCTOBER! Keeping your Will up to date is a vital part of keeping your affairs in order. Whether you are in need of your first Will or it’s time to change an existing Will here are some answers to frequently asked questions we would get from clients.

77 High Street | Holywood | County Down | BT18 9AQ

Should my Will try to cover every eventuality? It can be tempting to try and make your Will cover a wide range of hypothetical scenarios, however you shouldn’t attempt to fit every possibility in to it. Your Will should be updated every few years. However particular attention should be given to your Will following certain life events such as marriage, divorce, death of a beneficiary, death of an Executor or a change in your assets. However a Will should reflect your circumstances now and not what they could be in the future.

I have just had another child, should I update my Will? Not necessarily. Depending on your age and

14 LOOPMAG.NET

circumstances your Will may have been drafted to include future children without naming them. However keeping your Will updated following important life events such as these is always recommended to ensure your wishes are up to date. We would always recommend a review of your Will after a new addition even if it means it doesn’t need changed it’s always worth having it reviewed for peace of mind.

What happens if I die and don’t have a Will? If you die without a Will the law decides how your property is divided. This is known as dying ‘Intestate’. Dying without a Will takes away your control to decide who inherits from your Estate. It could be that someone who you wouldn’t want to inherit could take all or part of your Estate. It can

also make the administration process more costly and take more time to be finalised. Leaving a valid Will is the only way to make your wishes on death known.

These are just a small number of queries we are asked on a regular basis and we would always advise that having a professionally drafted Will is the best course of action. Contact us today to arrange an initial consultation. We can discuss your personal circumstances and draft a Will that suits your needs. Hunt Solicitors can be contacted on 028 90 428 600 and are located at 77 High Street, Holywood, County Down, BT18 9AQ or you can find us at www. huntsolicitors.com we are also on Facebook and Twitter.

What IS THE HOLYWOOD LOOK? Christopher McCracken from Oscar & Joy, Holywood, investigates... Next month Danny Boyle’s new movie about Steve Jobs will be hitting the cinema. He was a controversial figure, but whatever you think of the man, his vision has transformed our lives. The basis of Apple’s success was rooted in a design ethos that Hartmut Esslinger dubbed “California Global” – a

Des Ewing

look inspired by Hollywood with its mix of music, sex appeal and challenging the status quo. It got me wondering if our Holywood had inspired a design language of its own. Now before you scorn the premise, stop a moment and reflect. Our local residents already have a global reputation for

BRINGING DESIGN TO LIFE

music (Van Morrison) and sex appeal (Jamie Dornan). Do we challenge the status quo? Well there is more innovation and design in Holywood than we sometimes acknowledge, and as this is the “Year of Ireland Design” perhaps that is something we should do more to promote.

Flickerpix

HOLYWOOD is bookended by the Transport Museum, reflecting 200 years of ground breaking design, and by Short Brothers / Bombardier, whose C series wings are an absolute marvel of 21st century engineering, challenging the assumption that flying cannot be environmentally responsible too. Within the town we have a number of innovative architectural practices – Des Ewing, whose international practice has just won the Houzz design award for 2015 – is perhaps the best known. According to Des “Holywood is a perfect place to live in and run as a business - when London clients come over they cannot believe the quality that is here.” And of course, like Hollywood LA we also have an amazing film industry. Yellowmoon, based on the Shore Road, undertake more TV post production than any other company in N Ireland, including Game of Thrones which has just won an astounding 12 Emmys. Another innovative Holywood company, Flickerpix, have won 40 international awards, with a series of animations like Macropolis and Five Fables that are rooted in our local culture. On top of that our creativity extends to food & drink (Alain Kerlo’ch of newly Michelin starred Ox lives in Holywood, while Fontana has also been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand.); culture (two music festivals, May Day & Culture Night); & new media / politics (Mick Fealty from Slugger O’Toole). 16 LOOPMAG.NET

I asked Joel Simon, founder and creative Director at Flickerpix, if being located in Holywood influenced what they did. “I’ve always found Holywood to be an invigorating place to work in” says Joel. “There is is a village vibe and vibrant café culture. The fact that you are surrounded by many different artists, media practitioners, and start ups makes you feel part of a creative community which attracts many like-minded people.”

Holywood Local may not quite have the same brand as Hollywood Global, but nonetheless we have some very innovative people producing some very cool products and groundbreaking designs. And that’s something that I think we can all share and be proud of. If you would like to explore more about design, including links to everything I have mentioned, please check out my design journal at www.oscarandjoy.com

HOLYWOOD’S KARATE CHAMPION TAKES ON NEW CHALLENGE F

ergus McMullan, age 15, from Holywood County Down competed in the 2015 NIFMA MR & Miss Bikini Swimwear Ireland Fitness Model Championships on Sunday and was crowned, Mr Physique Under 16 and second in Mr Athletic Under 16. Fergus’s coach, Cathy McAleer, current world Karate champion and European champion, competes on December 6th for a World Full contact title opportunity in Belfast. Not only is Cathy training in preparation for her next big title, but also coached Fergus McMullan, a Karate student of hers, through the gruelling weeks of training. She was delighted with his success and said: “Fergus has trained extremely hard for the past ten weeks, most days doing a 6am run, a mid afternoon bodyweight session

and thoroughly deserves his titles. Fergus has shown great determination and stamina, but is especially to be praised for his dedication to his diet over the summer holidays, while school mates eat ice cream and chocolate. On days his friends were going out, Fergus could be found in the gym or running up and down Redburn hills to build up his leg muscles. Fergus’ attitude to training is second to none and most of the adults I have trained have not shown the same commitment and dedication.” Fergus is delighted with his wins on Sunday and is now setting his sights on the next competition. Fergus said: “I really enjoyed the intense training and learnt a lot from coach Cathy McAleer on nutrition and body weight training. I am looking forward to new season in Karate and I feel

15 year old Fergus McMullan’s new challenge was entering Mr Physique Model 20115 and taking second in Mr Athletic Under 16. the fittest and strongest I have ever done.” Next goal is to win an Irish title in the Irish Open, October Carlow. Fergus has his eyes set on winning a gold in both kata and Kumite. Local Karate Instructor and World Champion commented on the benefits of karate and all martial arts, Cathy said “I highly recommend taking up martial arts to improve strength, speed, balance, mental focus and selfdiscipline: the benefits really are fantastic whatever your age. If anyone wants to take up karate whether for their own personal benefit or to reach world class competition standard like the Fergus and the other students in NIKA, I’d love to hear from them.” For more information please contact Cathy McAleer at 07751 465323 or you can check out the website: northernirelandkarate.co.uk

The winners were announced by Irish celebrity Chef and proprietor of restaurant L’Ecrivain Derry Clarke, on 16th September at the Round Room, Mansion House, in Dublin and Bryan Boggs from Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt accepted the award on behalf of the estate. “We are delighted to have been recognised and honoured at the Irish Quality Food Awards in Dublin. These awards cover the whole of Ireland and there was plenty of competition in our category,” says Bryan.

“For a small food business like Clandeboye to compete and win on a national playing field is a great achievement and will give our business an important boost for the year ahead.” Clandeboye Estate Yoghurts are created from the milk from Clandeboye’s award winning herd of Holstein and Jersey cows and are still the only yoghurts made in Northern Ireland. Over 350 food and drink products were shortlisted in 85 categories. The awards were open to all food and drink retailers, producers and manufacturers across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. These prestigious accolades, now in their third year, set out to recognise excellence in food and drink product development from a wide variety of companies across Ireland. The awards

repeated last year’s trade-media partnership with Retail News magazine, and consumermedia partnership with Easy Food magazine. The awards themselves are organised into two distinct sections: Quality Food Awards – products for the multiple and independent grocery retail market and Quality Drink Awards – alcoholic drinks for the retail sector. Organised by Metropolis Business Media, group events manager Lara Newton comments: “This has been the most exciting year for all of us here at the Irish Quality Food and Drink Awards – we have been absolutely amazed at the incredibly high standard of both the food and drink put forward this year. It has been a difficult job for our teams of expert judges but we are very proud of all our winners and finalists and hope their success will help them grow their business and reward their dedication and hard work.” A selection of shortlisted and winning products will be showcased at the Food & Hospitality Ireland exhibition on September 16th-17th in Dublin. LITTLE WING SERVES UP LOCAL CLUB BURSARIES Northern Ireland’s Little Wing Pizzeria is encouraging local children’s clubs to get a slice of the action by applying for the Little Wing’s Little Stars scheme which will see £3,000 up for grabs.

F

ollowing on from the success of last year’s scheme, this year it is returning even bigger and better and will be open to any type of kid’s club from sports to art and from music to dance. The bursary programme will be available to clubs for children under 13 years old that are located nearby each of Little Wing’s six branches: Enniskillen, Holywood, Bangor, Ann Street, Belfast, Lisburn Road, Belfast and Ballyhackamore*. Six clubs will be awarded with a £500 bursary each. Commenting on the club bursaries, Luke Wolsey, Managing Director of Little Wing Pizzeria said: “Little Wing has six highly successful branches in Northern Ireland and we are always looking for opportunities to give back to the community by supporting local schools, clubs and charities so the Little Wing’s Little Stars

22 LOOPMAG.NET

bursaries are an extension of this support. “Throughout the year we get a lot of requests from children’s activity clubs to help them with sponsorship so we decided to launch this programme to give all local clubs an equal chance of being granted additional funding. I would encourage all clubs that are interested to apply for a bursary which can be put towards anything the club needs financial assistance with such as new kits, equipment or even to go towards the general costs of running the club.” Last year’s local winners were Bangor Rugby Club and Holywood Rugby Club, both of whom benefitted from a £500 bursary for their club. Mark Fallon from Bangor Rugby Club said “The money helped us to buy 12 new tackling pads. These were spread out through our

youth team divisions and used throughout our last season to help the children improve their skills and techniques. The bursary benefitted our whole youth division and we will definitely be applying for the scheme again this year.” Mark McKeown from Holywood Rugby Club said “Little Wing has been very supportive to us over the last year – the bursary helped fund an end of season family fun day for children and parents and Little Wing handed out free slices. The money was also put to good use on other things, such as buying new equipment for the club and taking the children to see an Ulster Rugby match. We would highly recommend entering the scheme as it helped our club massively.” To apply for the bursary scheme, children’s clubs simply need to write a 300 word explanation of why they need the bursary and what it will be used for and email it to bursaries@ littlewingpizzeria.co.uk before the closing date of Monday October 19. Little Wing is part of the Beannchor Group, Ireland’s largest hospitality group, which boasts a portfolio of over 50 pubs, hotels and restaurants across Northern Ireland.

Dry coughs are sometimes known as tickly coughs where no phlegm or mucus is produced whilst a chesty cough is the result of the body producing too much phlegm or mucus. As the cause of a cough is often a viral infection, it generally resolves by itself without the need for an antibiotic. A cough can be a symptom of other more serious or underlying conditions, so if you

develop a cough speak to your pharmacist and if a cough lasts more than a couple of weeks after the initial infection you should visit your GP. Drinking plenty of fluids is recommended, especially for children as this can make the mucus easier to cough up and can help soothe a dry throat. There are many different types of cough medicines aimed at relieving the symptoms of coughs. These can be purchased at Burns Pharmacy and we will be happy to provide advice upon the suitability of these for you. Please call into Burns Pharmacy for a professional, personal and friendly service.

By Your Local Expert Alison Stevenson of Geborgenheit Massage MUSINGS ON MASSAGE

ANNUAL LEAVES After the relentless Irish sunshine this year, it’s nice to have an excuse at last to turn up the heat, take hot showers and baths, eat wholesome soups and spicy stews as the chill of Autumn comes upon us. No more need for sandals. No more need for salads. Its all about keeping in the warmth.

THE REMEDY A man, who’d been living in Africa, asked me at a trade fair, on seeing the herbs, spices and grains used in the “herbal stamp massage” if I thought it was maybe a terrible pity to waste food on massage instead of just eating it. I thought this was a fair question. Feeling however confronted and briefly ashamed I had to think hard

before eventually offering up an answer; one which I have since come to firmly believe; that here in the abundant west we can, with good conscience, nourish the body internally and externally alike from nature’s edible bounty. In fact, the simpler the remedy, the salve or the moisturizer, the less chance of a bad reaction.

THE SPICE IS RIGHT

FOR TIPS AND ADVICE IN PREPARING A DUMPLING-LIKE HERBAL STAMP FOR MASSAGE, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PHONE, TEXT OR EMAIL: MOBILE : 07849 799254 EMAIL : ALISONSTEVENSON.AS@GMAIL.COM 24 LOOPMAG.NET

Not only because the scents are so delicious and evocative but also because of the wonderful, “warming” properties of cinnamon, clove and ginger we have been intuitively drawn to using these spices at this time of year in Hallowe’en cooking and baking, in mulling wine, in preserving relishes and chutneys. We can add them to teas, foot baths and massages too. The heat from the more savoury spices like chillies, coriander seeds and black pepper help keep the body’s “fires” burning through the cold, dark days to come, through improving circulation, aiding digestion and relieving muscle tension. Use these powerful foods in subtle doses in the kitchen, the bathroom and the massage atelier for a naturally nurturing season.
