#19 / AUGUST 2016 / Cadets

HOLYWOOD CADETS MAKE IT A SUMMER TO REMEMBER Teenage Cadets from Holywood and North Down tackle a packed programme of sport and outdoor pursuits at Annual Camp at Strensall Camp in Yorkshire.

W

hile many of their teenage classmates are using the holidays to catch up on social media, snatch a few post-exam lieins, or simply hang around at home, these motivated teens have been facing a fortnight of challenge, craic and camping. Colonel Keith Dowell, Commandant of 2nd (Northern Ireland) Battalion Army Cadet Force said, “Annual Camp continues to be a highlight of the Cadet year. It’s a great opportunity for kids to let off steam and enjoy themselves after a tough year in school. However, while school may be out for Summer, learning certainly doesn’t

stop, for our Cadets learn great new skills at Annual Camp where they have the opportunity to try all kinds of new sports and outdoor pursuits. “Providing those opportunities, complete with expert tuition and professional supervision, would stretch most family budgets but, for Cadets, annual camp costs are kept deliberately low – earning great feedback from mums and dads! As a matter of policy we aim to ensure that all our activities are either

low cost or totally free. We even provide free uniforms! Even more important, parents know that we’ll work to bring out the best in their kids, helping them not only to build skills and confidence, but also to make lasting, supportive friendships. As the Cadets from Holywood demonstrate, real life played out in the Great Outdoors with your mates can be much more rewarding than virtual living with mobile and computer!”

MAYOR GIRVAN ANNOUNCES CHARITIES Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Deborah Girvan, has announced the charities that she will be supporting during her term of office. They are the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), The Integrated Education Fund (IEF) and The Samaritans. Speaking about her choices, she said: "I have thought long and hard about the charities that I want to support. I have chosen the RNLI because the new council has 115 miles of coastline and we have three lifeboat stations in our area – Bangor, Donaghadee and Portaferry. Each station responds to numerous rescues at sea throughout the year

and have saved many lives. I have chosen the Integrated Education Fund because I am an ardent support of integrated education. Having worked in the sector I know the incredible work that the Integrated Education Fund does to support the growth and development of integrated schools and shared education. I have chosen the Samaritans because they have a local office in Bangor which responds to calls right across our borough. Demand for their assistance has increased considerably in recent years and with extra funding they will be able to expand their network of services. I have set up a charity

committee. By working together over the next 11 months I hope to raise an ambitious target of £30,000. I would also encourage local residents and businesses to consider raising money for my chosen Charities, all of which are totally dependent on charitable donations from the public. You can get involved by coming along to the events that the charity committee will be organising - further details of which will be publicised in the local press and on the council’s website and Facebook page over the coming months - or arrange an initiative of your own to help raise funds." ardsandnorthdown.gov.uk

HOLYWOOD WRITER TAKES FIRST PLAY ON THE ROAD

Jane Coyle (right) of Holywood is an arts journalist, commentator and critic, who has worked extensively in radio, television and print media in Ireland, the UK and France. The Lantern Man is Jane’s first play and its touring from next month Jane and Padraig have lived in Holywood with their three adult children for over 30 years. Matthew qualified as a solicitor and now works as a public affairs analyst, Patrick is a graphic designer; Hannah is a Paris-based actress. Jane has covered cultural affairs for the Irish Times, The Stage, Culture Northern Ireland and BBC Northern Ireland. For many years, she worked in television production for Holywoodbased Waddell Media. As well as being involved in lifestyle series and documentaries, she set up the company’s film and drama development unit. She is a founding director of the film company Powerstone Entertainment, for which she has written three fulllength screenplays. Together with broadcaster and writer Padraig Coyle, she runs Spring Lane Productions, which has produced a wide variety of radio programming and historybased dramas. She and Padraig were the founders of Spotlight on Brittany, a magazine programme for English-speakers in western France, which was nominated for best radio documentary in the 2013 Celtic Media Festival. The Lantern Man is Jane’s first play. The script was first presented at the Pick’n’Mix Festival 2014 at the MAC and has been developed through staged readings at Féile an Phobail, the

Lyric Theatre, the South Bank Playhouse and the British-Irish Intergovernmental Secretariat. It is set in Dublin during the months leading up to the Easter Rising. Wounded in body and spirit, Johnny McGrath returns from the Western Front to a city he barely recognises. He unexpectedly inherits a collection of glass lantern slides showing images of soldiers in action and decides to use them to tell the public the real story of the war. As tension rises around him, Johnny realises that there is more to the photographs than meets the eye. The play was inspired by the discovery in a Belfast church of a collection of World War I lantern slides, known as the Castleton Lanterns. The production is directed by Stephen Beggs, one of Northern Ireland’s most experienced theatre practitioners. The cast comprises seven of our best known professional actors. Jane’s second play The Suitcase was premiered in the Belfast synagogue at the 2015 Ulster Bank Belfast International Arts Festival, where it won the Belfast Telegraph Audience Award. It was revived for Holocaust Memorial Day 2016. Her third play Me Here, Me was first performed at the Beckett Paris Festival and the 2016 Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival.

ROAD RACERS IVAN LINTIN, DAN KNEEN AND DEAN HARRISON WITH ROBERT GRAHAM, CHAIR OF THE DUNDROD & DISTRICT MOTORCYLE CLUB, STEVE AIKEN MBE, MLA IN SOUTH ANTRIM AND GORDON DUNNE, NLA IN NORTH DOWN.

SOME of road racing’s biggest names and brightest young talents have gathered in Lisburn to officially launch the 2016 MCE Insurance Ulster Grand Prix. Fresh from the Isle of Man, an all-star lineup including Ian Hutchinson, Peter Hickman, Ivan Lintin, Dean Harrison, Maria Costello and Dan Kneen came together at the Lagan Valley Island to give fans an exciting taste of what’s in store for Bike Week and reflect on their seasons so far. Joining them on the entry list this August will be Michael Dunlop, William Dunlop, Bruce Anstey and reigning Man of the Meeting Lee Johnston to name just a few, but it’s

the fierce rivalry that has emerged between Hutchinson and the younger Dunlop that seems to have caught the attention of road racing fans everywhere. Their battle at the TT has set the scene for what promises to be another epic duel at Dundrod, which is still officially the World’s Fastest Road Race with a lap record of 133.977mph. Both men are already multiple winners at the MCE Ulster Grand

Prix and both will be hoping to stake their claim for the final international silverware of the season. Alongside the stellar line-up on track, the organisers also confirmed another packed schedule of entertainment for the 94th MCE Insurance Ulster Grand Prix and the Plant Lubrication (NI) Dundrod 150 road races. Bike Week runs from the 8th - 13th August 2016 and include the Plant Lubrication Dundrod 150 and the MCE Insurance Ulster Grand Prix road races. Tickets are available now on Ticketmaster. Speaking at the event, Peter Hickman said: “I can’t wait to get to the Ulster, and if the weather is good I can see the lap record going. It’s a special place for me, the scene of my first international road race win and to add another to the tally would be fantastic.”

FOSTER AND MCGUINNESS OPEN £1M ANIMATION STUDIO IN BELFAST First Minister, Arlene Foster, and deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness have officially opened a new four-floor studio for BAFTA-winning and EMMY® nominated children’s television producer, Sixteen South which was founded by Holywood’s Colin Williams.

First Minister, Arlene Foster said: “The move by Sixteen South to this new animation studio represents a £1m investment and commitment to the sector. Today marks the next chapter of the Sixteen South success story. “The creative industries in Northern Ireland contribute over £329 million to the local economy and I, and my Executive colleagues are committed to support further growth in this sector. The development of the Film & TV industry remains a crucial part of the creative economy in Northern Ireland and while other large-scale productions can sometimes be seen as taking the plaudits, it is appropriate to highlight that the animation sector here is extremely buoyant with our animated productions far reaching and screened globally. “It is companies like Sixteen South, with talented people, including world class animators that are helping to grow this

industry and our reputation. I commend and congratulate to Colin and the Sixteen South team for leading the way in putting our animation sector on the map. I am confident these new premises, combined with your imagination, your hard work and your passion, you will continue to produce much loved children’s entertainment for generations to come.” Since investing £1m in the 7,500 sq ft city centre building in the heart of Belfast, Sixteen South, which employs over 100 people, has had its brand new animated series Claude (52 x 11’) picked up by Disney Junior for broadcast throughout Europe, Middle East, Africa & Australasia. Their hit mixed animation series, Lily’s Driftwood Bay, which airs in more than 100 countries, has just won the prestigious and coveted European Prix Jeunesse award whilst in production of its second series. and Rob Brydon, as a seafaring and rather handsome silver fox, alongside the regular cast including Lord Stag (Stephen Fry) and Lily, voiced by Belfast’s Orlagh O’Keefe. Colin Williams, Founder and Creative Director of Sixteen South, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the First and deputy First Minister to officially open our new Belfast studio. In 1884, this building was home to the Clarence Finishing Company, a leading exporter of the finest linen handkerchiefs. Today, we’re proud that it’s the home to one of the city’s new industries, where we make television for children in every country.” Sixteen South has been making award winning television shows for children for almost ten years including Pajanimals, produced in partnership with The Jim Henson Company, Big & Small, Sesame Tree, a partnership with Sesame Workshop, and their BAFTA and IFTA winning Big City Park

CO DOWN MAN ‘SORTS’ NI SERVICE INDUSTRY

LOOPMAG.NET

Tech-savvy entrepreneurs Peter Layland and Richard Campbell have launched their innovative app set to revolutionise the way that local businesses and consumers make appointments, following an investment of over £200,000 in a bid to meet growing consumer demand.

PICTURED

PICTURED AT THE LAUNCH TRADESMAN JAMES GALLOGHLY JOINS RICHARD CAMPBELL CO-FOUNDERS, SORTSY AND PETER LAYLAND AND CO-FOUNDERS, SORTSY TO OFFICIALLY LAUNCH SORTSY.

Sortsy, which is officially launched to the Northern Ireland market this month, will provide companies operating in the service industries with a quick route to market and allow them to directly engage with customers across Northern Ireland. The new app will give businesses, both large and small, a platform to market their services to consumers, receiving bookings, and fill appointments directly based on consumer demand. Having already made an investment of over £200k and created 8 new jobs to date, Northern Ireland’s latest tech start-up has big ambitions for their product. Speaking about the new company Peter Layland, co-founder, Sortsy said, “The idea for Sortsy was

born out of sheer frustration as I tried to find a qualified and trusted trades person in Northern Ireland. “Working with Richard and the newly formed Sortsy team we have developed a product which will offer businesses the perfect online channel for promoting and growing their business with a relevant local audience, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The app will also deliver exceptional customer service to NI consumers - it’s a winwin situation for everyone”. Speaking about the new app, Richard Campbell, co-founder, Sortsy said, “From the very beginning I could see the potential in this product. It is something I could see myself using all the time, so being a part of the team

creating it and building it is just the icing on the cake”. “Our product has infinite possibilities for the local businesses it can help grow and even create. From sole traders to multi-nationals, from plumbers to hairdressers and dentists, once started Sortsy can be expanded and assist virtually any type of business”. Sortsy launched in Northern Ireland this month with over 400 trade professionals. Unlike other apps that offer just one genre or industry, Sortsy will be adding new industry sectors and additional business services to their platform before the end of 2016, and as they grow business users’ opportunities will grow also.

#19 AUGUST 2016 / Decision Time

CHOOSING A PRE-SCHOOL? By Montessori Helens Bay

It’s August once again and most of us can hardly believe that the end of those long summer holidays is fast approaching. And for anyone with pre-Pre and Pre-school children, one of the most important decisions for those young lives lies ahead.

CONTACT TEL 07476 241435 ADMIN@MONTESSORIHELENSBAY.CO.UK 13B FORT ROAD, HELENS BAY, BT19 1 LA

their development. This is what Maria Montessori called the ‘perfect organisation of work’. It is unique to a Montessori school, although most schools have absorbed elements of her approach into their own (e.g. sensorial play and wooden toys etc). The crucial, Montessoribased difference is that children are not simply ‘playing’ with what, initially, interests them. With thoughtful guidance, they can move towards experiences and activities that best fulfil their individual needs and build most effectively on their individual aptitudes. To achieve this, a great deal of time and care should be taken to observe and understand each child. Dr Montessori talked about children as “the hope of the world”: growing upwardly and outwardly. If your Pre-School does this, then you have chosen a winner!”

Each morning should be filled with opportunities for the children to experience the world directly through their senses and through an environment that, for them, is totally natural but which is very carefully prepared to advance their development

“Which Pre-school to choose? Where to go? And why? We all want the very best for our children, that’s one of the most natural human emotions. But things can get complicated when we try to work out what we mean by ‘best’. For Dr Maria Montessori, still one of the most influential education pioneers the world has ever seen, the definition of ‘best’ was very clear. “Understand how to help a child think constructively, creatively and independently so learning is enjoyed not endured.” Enjoyable learning should be at the heart of everything a Pre (and pre-Pre) School does. Each morning should be filled with opportunities for the children to experience the world directly through their senses and through an environment that, for them, is totally natural but which is very carefully prepared to advance

Worlds Most Powerful Wind Turbines Breeze into Belfast Lough

LOOPMAG.NET

THE MHI VESTAS V164-8.0MW MACHINE IS THE WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL WIND TURBINE

The world’s most powerful wind turbine blades have arrived into Belfast Harbour as part of a project to develop an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea. The blades – plus their 88m high towers - are visible from across much of the city.

The first six massive 80m long blades – the equivalent length of nine double decker London buses – have arrived in Belfast Harbour’s offshore wind terminal from the Isle of Wight. The completed wind farm will provide enough renewable electricity for 230,000 homes. Each blade weighs 35 tonnes and the turbines, which will be assembled in Belfast Harbour, will ‘sweep’ an area larger than the London Eye (21,124 sq m). During this phase of the project, 32 turbines will be assembled in Belfast. The blades are manufactured in the UK by MHI Vestas Offshore Wind. Joe O’Neill, Belfast Harbour’s Commercial Director, said: “Belfast Harbour is delighted to welcome MHI Vestas and to have the privilege of handling the world’s most powerful blades. In 2013, we completed the development of a 50 acre offshore wind terminal, the first bespoke facility of its kind in the UK in order to facilitate this style of operation. Supporting the growth of the renewable energy sector is something we are proud to be a part of and look forward to working with Vestas to ensure the

successful completion of the Burbo Bank Extension project.” The MHI Vestas V164-8.0MW machine is the world’s most powerful wind turbine with significantly larger components than those previously handled in Belfast. After the turbines are assembled in Belfast they will be transported on a state-ofthe-art jack up vessel which will install them on the seabed, just off the coast of Liverpool. The wind farm will cover 40km2, the same area of almost 6,000 Premiership football pitches. Once operational, the tip height of the blade and turbine will be almost 200m. The record level of energy produced from just one turbine in a 24-hr period is 192 MWh – the same amount of energy produced by 22,600 litres of oil. The blades, which were designed, tested and

manufactured at the MHI Vestas on the Isle of Wight, will be the first UK built blades to be installed at a British offshore wind power plant. MHI Vestas CEO, Jens Tommerup, said: “It’s a significant milestone for the industry to see the blades in serial production arriving in Belfast ready for installation. This marks the first time locally manufactured major components for offshore wind turbines are being used in the UK. These high-technology blades are hand-crafted to withstand the harshest conditions. Combined with our manufacturing facility and the provision of a dedicated pre-assembly terminal by Belfast Harbour it’s now possible to start tapping into the potential of wind power from the Irish Sea.” Installation of the turbines is schedule to take place this autumn.

Mount Stewart Unveils Previously Unseen Countryside

Previously unseen parts of Mount Stewart demesne, on the shores of Strangford Lough, were officially opened to visitors this week, with a network of new walking trails and archaeological wonders to explore. The land has been looked after by the National Trust, Northern Ireland’s largest conservation charity, since it was acquired for £4 million as part of last year’s major restoration project at Mount Stewart, which saw a further £8 million spent on the renovation of the House. The acquisition now brings the outdoors at Mount Stewart to over 800 acres of rolling, County Down countryside.Three miles of new walking trails wind through a landscape ‘lost in time’ and establishes Mount Stewart’s reputation as one of the best-

preserved Irish country demesnes. The landscape of the demesne is virtually unchanged since the Stewart family bought it in the mid-18th century and built up a working farm, interspersed with woodland, orchards, follies, a walled garden and, of course, the stunning formal gardens for which Mount Stewart is famed. The new paths are the first phase in a ten-year plan to develop trails across the remainder of the demesne, with the ultimate goal of providing up to 20 miles of trails. The restoration of the demesne has also been kindly supported by the

www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Garfield Weston Foundation. Visitors to the new trails this summer can expect a different experience from the more formal paths around the Mount Stewart gardens and pleasure grounds. Good walking boots are recommended as the ground is uneven in places and can be muddy during wet weather. Combined with the recently restored house and one of the top gardens in the world, Mount Stewart is now truly a national treasure offering a fascinating insight into the stories of the Stewart family and the running of a country Anglo-Irish estate in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. It is one of the must-see destinations for anyone visiting Northern Ireland.

uthentic scratches, genuine dust and wonderful, honest craftsmanship are the sort of things we might look for in piece when we are on our finding missions. Jokes aside, we really do love the life that’s displayed in old wood, furniture and vintage household items. Salvage and industrial in particular are in fact BEST when they’ve been

through a few factories or homes. With the exception of our antique pieces of course! An added bonus of getting the genuine article, be it an industrial anglepoise light, salvage wood for a wall or old school chairs for your kitchen dining, is that you are salvaging a small slice of history. It lit, floored or sat many people before its journey to you. Personally, I adore that!

HAIR COLOURING With a personal touch!

Discover what hair colour is perfect for enhancing your your skin tone and eye colour. Knowing your colour type is definitely useful. After all, nobody wants to look washed out, pale or older because of an awkward choice of hair colour. The following colour type descriptions help you discover the colours and tones, which not only enhance your hair style but also your face.

FIRST OF ALL FIND OUT WHAT YOUR SKIN TONE IS: THE COLOUR OF YOUR VEINS DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TONE. The colour of your veins can show you if your skin colouring is cool or warm. If you stand outside or in a room with bright natural light, hold up your arms and look at your wrists to see what color your veins look like through your skin. •If your veins look like they are blue, then your undertone is cool. • If your veins look like they are green, then your undertone is warm. TRY COLOURED PAPER If you find it hard to see your veins or even just to double check your results, try the paper test. You have to get yourself several pieces of colored paper. You will need paper in yellow, red, white, green, silver and blue. Take one at a time, and hold the coloured piece of paper next to your face. If your skin looks more radiant with the red and yellow sheets of paper, then you are more warm toned. But if your skin looks better with the white, green, silver, and blue sheets of paper, then you are cooler toned. arms and look at your wrists to see what color your veins look like through your skin. EYE COLOUR Eye colour and hair colour go hand in hand, it is important to take into consideration your eye colour before you decide on what hair color you want. If unsure, talk to your hairstylist about what hair colours will compliment your eyes. •Warm colouring means that

you’re likely to have one of the following hair, skin tone & eye combinations: Your natural hair colour is, chestnut, charcoal brown, coppery-brown, dark golden blonde, red, light or dark auburn Your eye colour tends to be hazel, Amber, golden brown, hazel, or green eyes You may have freckles and Tan easily, your complexion is golden-brown, yellow-beige, peach or ivory. •Cool colouring means that you’ll have one of the following hair, skin tone and eye combinations: Your natural hair colouring is black, dark brown, medium brunette, ash blonde, silver grey, salt and-pepper or even white! Your eye colour tends to be Light blue, grey, dark brown dark blue or black eyes Your complexion is black, olive, fair, rosy or pale. If you have white skin, it very often burns in the sun.

Anne Hathaway Jennifer Lopez caramel and brunette suits her cool brown hair which tones in her hair compliment her warm enhances her dark brown eyes. skin colouring.

BROWN HAIR COLOUR There is a shade of brown to suit every skin type. Brown hair colour is great if you want an easily managed look. Brown is also great if your hair is damaged. Browns reflect well in light which gives the hair its great shine. If your skin is light, try a medium brown or brown with red tones. Keep away from dark browns unless you

have naturally dark brown hair. This could cause you to look too pale. If your skin is medium toned, go for a medium brown, like a caramel or auburn. If you have dark skin, decide on dark shades of brown like an espresso or mocha. Try not to go for shades that are more than two shades lighter than your natural colour. RED HAIR COLOUR The colour red is very versatile and there’s usually a shade to suit anyone. Your skin determines the right shade for you. If your skin is light, a strawberry blonde or copper red would work well with this skin tone. Darker shades like burgundy can give you a washed out look. If you have medium skin, shades like a medium copper or auburn will look great. If your skin tone is dark, go for a medium auburn or warm chestnut brown. BLONDE HAIR COLOUR Blond hair is a great choice if you have a light or medium skin tone. Keep in mind that if you are not a natural blond, maintaining your colour can be expensive. To maintain the look you need regular touch-ups and toning to keep that beautiful blonde tone in the hair without it turning brassy. If your skin is light, a light creamy, golden or beige blonde would work well. Having your hair too ash or white can give you a washed out look Medium skin tone suits a medium toned blonde like a golden or beige. Dark skin tones suit darker shades of blonde like caramels or honeys. Or you can just add some highlights. Blondes that are platinum blonde or orange looking can make your hair look fake. THERE ARE ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS! If you find you have a mix match of result and can’t figure out your skin tone you may have a neutral skin tone. Neutral skin tones can pull off any colour but do tend to sway favourably one way. Your hairstylist should be able to advise you on this and give you more details!
