Mac Makes his Mark on Ashfield Girls’ Award winning film maker pays a vist to inspire local school Ashfield Girls’ High School and entrepreneurship skills charity Young Enterprise joined forces to host to Emmy award winning commercial film maker, Mac Premo, on Thursday 8th October where Mr Premo and Adrianna Dufay held a Creative Masterclass, inspiring Year 10 Business students to realise that creativity is both a skill and a useful tool to get their message across. The students focused on how to use this skill to pitch their ideas and engage others to buy in and support their ideas. The guest speakers, Mac & Adrianna from New York, who are visiting Belfast as part of the Homecoming 2015 event, shared their ‘BucketBoard’ project with the students and the process involved in getting the wider community to buy into this global project. The students went on to explore these concepts and were inspired to design their own creative pitch. The students then embraced their love of technology by using iPads to create adverts for their products. Head of Business, Cheryl Hoey said, “The girls were really inspired by Mac’s innovative use of buckets to make skateboards and their business ideas benefited from his involvement in the project. It was a great pleasure and privilege to have come and share his experiences with the girls’’ Visit YENI.co.uk to see how you can get involved with Young Enterprise, empowering young people with the skills and confidence to succeed in life and work. www.yeni.co.uk

Heart Problems “Could Be Spotted At Optician’s” Heart disease and stroke risk could soon be detected with a simple eye test, if research in Belfast proves successful.
H
usband and wife team Professors Tara and Johnny Moore are working to develop the test at Ulster University and the Cathedral Eye Clinic in Belfast, with the help of over £50,000 funding from Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke.
The research aims to show that blood vessels in the eye are a “window” to the condition of blood vessels in other parts of the body. Prof Tara Moore said: “The research stems from observations in animal studies we carried out many years ago in Harvard Medical School and also recently my husband, consultant ophthalmologist Johnny Moore, noted similar trends whilst carrying out routine eye examination on patients. He observed blood flow in tiny blood vessels in the eye was different between patients. The rate or pulsatile nature of blood flow through the vessels may differ, or the diameter and angle of branching of the vessels may vary between patients- perhaps reflective of cardiovascular health. After discussing these observations with close friend, Dr Mark Spence, a consultant cardiologist in RVH Belfast, together we came up with this study funded by Chest Heart and Stroke NI.”
NI Chest Heart & Stroke is showcasing the research to coincide with World Heart Day on September 29. The charity is the only local cause that funds research in relation to chest, heart and stroke conditions locally through Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University. It has had remarkable success in the past, funding studies that helped to develop the now commonly used dye test for detecting heart disease, as well as identifying heart disease genes that are unique to Co Tyrone. Said Prof Moore: “Our research could mean that a future trip to the optician could identify cardiovascular disease at an early stage. It really has the potential to save lives, so I would urge people to support NICHS so they can fund further ground-breaking research like this.” To make a donation to NI Chest Heart & Stroke, text Heart to 70660 or call 028 9032 0184.

orest school Fridays, working in concrete, blacksmithing, basket weaving, cooking from school garden grown produce, learning the secret life of numbers, listening to world mythology and doing Goethean plant studies, these are just some of the ways in which the children of the Holywood Steiner School spend their school days. Like all other Steiner schools, its ethos was developed by the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s. The pedagogy emphasizes the role of imagination in learning, striving to integrate holistically the intellectual, practical, and artistic development of pupils. There are over 1,000 Waldorf schools, 2,000 kindergartens in over 60 countries making it the fastest growing international school movement. The structure of Waldorf education follows Steiner’s theory of child development,

which divides childhood into three developmental stages and describes learning strategies appropriate to each stage. The stated purpose of this to awaken the physical, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual aspects of each individual, fostering creative as well as analytic thinking. A 2005 review found that Waldorf schools successfully develop creative, social and other capabilities important in the holistic growth of the person. “Children thrive in an environment where they are able to fully utilise every aspect of their potential in an age-appropriate manner,” said Stephanie Sim, Class Teacher. “In Kindergarten they learn through imitation, in the Lower School through the cultivation of feeling and in the Upper School through thought. We often say that in Steiner-Waldorf education we work through the
Hands, Heart and Head – in that order.” The school has a very popular playgroup, Kindergarten, a Lower and an Upper School. On 5th and 6th of December, the School will hold its annual Advent Festival which is open to everyone. The festival is child focused, has good home cooked food and exquisite handcrafted items on sale. There are numerous craft workshops where you can make delicate stars and coloured beeswax cribs, and candle dip. In addition, there is a magical Crystal Forest and Walnut Boat experience, which adults also thoroughly enjoy!

THE GALBRAITH FAMILY have been farming at Craigavad, Holywood since 1935. Initially a dairy farm, their focus now is to grow a number of free range bronze turkeys for the Christmas trade. They have chosen to grow the multi award winning Kelly bronze turkeys which are slowly matured over a 22 week period to provide a succulent bird of high quality flavour and texture.
T
he turkeys are fed a wholesome cereal based diet including locally grown oats and wheat, without any antibiotics or growth promoters. They are full of flavour as they are slowly grown and have the best of living conditions, enjoying open pasture by day and the shelter of a deep straw filled barn by night. “Traditional processing is carried out on the farm,” says Jeremy, “thus reducing the stress of transport and starts mid December. Once the birds have been hand plucked, they are then hung for a minimum of 10 days. This helps to tenderise the meat and develop its full flavour.” Turkey crowns can also be provided on request. Jeremy continues, “As well as the crowns we will have boneless turkey roasts and free range hams available too. Also we have the full range

of vegetables and potatoes, all again from a local farm.” Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a traditional turkey dinner so why not treat your family and friends to a bronze Craigavad turkey? Whether you are catering for a large or small group of people, they offer a range of different sized birds to suit all parties. Christmas is a very busy time of year and so to allow you to make the most of your festive season, you can collect when suits you or the family will deliver your turkey at a time convenient for you! Loop Mag | November 2015 | Celebrating Holywood Youth
HOLYWOOD FAMILY TRUST LAUNCH NEW YOUTH FACILITY Holywood Family Trust (HFT), based in the Community & Family Centre, opened its new youth facility off High Street on Culture Night, Friday 18th September.
I
n partnership with the Department of Education and Holywood CFC, HFT has constructed a ground floor facility, underneath Holywood CFC’s Community Hall. The space includes a kitchen area, breakout room, storage space and a large multi-purpose hall to accommodate 90 young people that attend the various youth sessions each week. Speaking about the development, Paul Betts, Centre Director said, “This is a much needed facility for the young people of Holywood. Over 300 young people visited us last year at “Zone” with a core group of 90 who return week after week for a wide range of activities. At the opening, youth leaders, Liam McCusker and Rose Wade, said “The expansion of our youth work over the last couple of years has meant that we have needed a larger space with improved disabled access and catering facilities. This facility will allow us to better meet the diverse range of needs of our young people, provide a wider range of services and allow us to deliver an even higher quality programme to a greater number of young people“. The investment of £250K has
12 LOOPMAG.NET
been a shared partnership between the Department of Education, Holywood Christian Fellowship Church and HFT along with other charitable grants from TBF & KL Thompson Trust and Garfield Weston Foundation. “This is a great example of how government bodies, churches, philanthropist organisations and the community sector can work together for the greater good and is a fantastic endorsement of the youth leaders and volunteers who work so hard to create a safe and stimulating environment for our local young people” Mr Betts continued. The centre will initially be open five times per week and in partnership with the Education Authorities Youth Services Section, includes a wide range of curriculum based activities such as generic drop-in, personal development workshops, and tailored programmes. The opening of the Youth Centre coincides with other developments within the site on High Street and within Holywood Family Trust. HFT also provides Childcare and Counselling. In partnership with OFMDFM under the Bright Starts Scheme, HFT
have expanded their Holywood Afterschool Club daily child care provision and developed additional disabled and able bodied toilet facilities. HFT Community Counselling has also expanded in recent years and alongside the 1000 hours that are provided free of charge in Holywood, the charity, supported by PHA, will be providing services in Newtownards and Bangor over the autumn and winter months. Mr Betts concluded, “New buildings are great but off themselves they don’t change anything, it’s what happens inside that really makes the difference, and so we thank all who have grant aided or assisted in the physical work, whilst applauding the staff and volunteers who are working week in and week out to make a real difference in the lives of our young people. HFT has a terrific dedicated team of staff and volunteers working with children, young people and adults, to whom we are indebted. A strong network of agencies also exists in this region and works in partnership with HFT. Whilst a lot of work is still needed, we are grateful for all that has been accomplished to date”. www.holywoodft.co.uk
£43,267.15 on graffiti removal around the borough and during the year 2013 to 2014 this rose to £45,080.23. Mr Easton said he was ‘deeply shocked’ to discover that the Executive had spent over £88,000 on removing graffiti from its properties across North Down over the last two financial years. He added, “At a time when departments are struggling to find money with cutbacks, the last thing the Housing Executive needs to be doing is having to waste money removing graffiti put there by silly individuals who are costing the ratepayers of North Down a lot of money.

In May intimidating loyalist graffiti was daubed on a gable wall in Bangor’s Clanmorris estate just days after a man was violently assaulted by a masked gang wielding hammers in the Abbey Park area. The terrifying threat included the words, ‘Next time it’s a bullet,’ and was claimed to have been made by a group called ‘Loyalists Against Drugs’ whose name was also daubed alongside the grim warning. The graffiti appeared after a man was attacked by a gang of masked men as he walked along a nearby road and had to be taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

“This is money that could be spent in a better way, such as providing homes or indeed doing essential repairs to infrastructure. “Those responsible for graffiti need to wise up and stop this as they are hurting the ratepayers of North Down. “I believe the only way to reduce incidents of graffiti is to impose tougher fines and community service on those caught and make them remove their handiwork.” Mr Easton’s Assembly question asked the Minister for Social Development to detail the cost of removing graffiti from Housing Executive properties in North Down in each of the last two financial years. The minister replied that the Housing Executive had advised him that the cost of removing graffiti from their properties in North Down was as follows - 2012/13, £43,267.15 and 2013/14, £45,080.23. THE CHANGING TASTE OF COFFEE O
ne of the biggest cultural changes in Northern Ireland has been our attitude to what we eat and drink. Jay Rayner, the Observer’s food critic, used to be dismissive of the local offer but has recently given us a string of rave reviews. This is not about a few good restaurants, but a total change in mindset. As Jay says “Over the past three or four years, the thing that struck me is just how passionate people in Belfast are about their food.” One area where we remain behind the curve is our appreciation of coffee. This may seem like a counter-intuitive statement, as Holywood is the coffee-shop capital of Northern Ireland. But how many people then go home and resort to a spoonful of supermarket instant? Yes it is quick and convenient, but it is also degraded coffee that

is effectively stale. Yet attitudes are changing fast as the “Third Wave” of coffee culture takes hold. This is a global movement to appreciate the true quality of the bean. It started in America in the late 90’s and hit London a decade later. Fast forward to 2015 and it is now stirring upon these shores. Appreciation of coffee doesn’t have to be complicated but it does mean we demand more. For example, should we really support a system of poorly paid labourers making a low grade commodity? Or would we rather pay a bit more for quality coffee from properly resourced farms? It means we demand fresh. Buying small batch artisanal coffee is good; buying whole beans and grinding yourself is even better. And instead of a stale spoon of instant why not try alternative brewing techniques
from around the world? The mesmerising ritual of a Japanese V60; or an American Aeropress for speed. Italian stove tops are great for hot coffee; a French Press is a stylish way to serve. Most of us can now discern our Pinot Noir from our Rioja, and few would welcome a dinner gathering that still served Blue Nun from a box. With coffee consumption it is still common to start the day or end a meal with instant. But attitudes are changing fast. Perhaps it won’t be long before we look back on those days with the same bitter distaste that we currently force ourselves to endure.

HOLYWOOD SCHOOLBOY SIGNS FOR SOLWAY SHARKS ICE HOCKEY TEAM IN DUMFRIES.
J
Just over six years ago, Jamie Scott, 17, a pupil at Priory Integrated College, Priory would never in his wildest dreams think that he would be playing ice-hockey in one of the senior leagues on the UK mainland.
amie was adept on a pair of rollerblades or a skateboard at the age of eleven and watched on as a neighbour hammered pucks into a net against a garage door with an ice-hockey stick. It was not long before Jamie was encouraged to pick up a stick. That neighbour was Stephen Eccles, now 18, and a proficient ice-hockey player, currently in Canada playing in the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League. Stephen’s father actively encouraged him to try out ice-hockey at Dundonald ice-rink. It was at this time that the Junior Belfast Giants were formalising structures for the development of junior ice-hockey in NI and Jamie was taught the basics of the game under the guidance of some of the best coaches available in junior ice hockey across the UK including Rob Stewart and Mark Morrison, both ex-professional players. On completion of his first season with the club he picked up the most improved player award. He attended regular ice-hockey camps in Scotland and England to improve on his basic skills and it was not long before he was bringing home silverware for his efforts on ice at the Best of British Ice-hockey camps. His first competitive game with the Junior Belfast Giants was in January 2012 in Scotland.
In September 2012 the club was accepted into the Scottish League and Jamie became a regular traveller across the Irish Sea to play in competitive games. Primarily a defence player, Jamie both assisted and captained a number of the Junior Belfast Giants teams across the various age groups and he was recently appointed assistant captain for the Under 20 team. In September 2013 he was one of a number of junior players selected by the club to attend trials for the Scotland Under 17 team held at Dumfries, where the best players from each Scottish club compete for places on the squad. After a series of trials both Jamie and Stephen Eccles were selected to represent Scotland and play at the conference tournament at Hull, competing against the best of junior ice hockey players in the UK. He made selection for the Scotland Under 17 team during the 2014/15 season and travelled with the team to a tournament in Prague and the conference tournament held in Sheffield. In January 2015, whilst playing with the Junior Belfast Giants Under 20 team and the Belfast Giants Scottish National League team, Jamie was asked to consider signing on a two-way (permits players to play for another team, although playing fixtures with their parent club
takes precedent) for the Solway Sharks senior team, based at Dumfries playing in the National Ice Hockey League North Morale Conference (Division 1). Due to injury at the mid-way point last season Jamie returned to the ice to play two games with the Sharks. This season he has re-signed on a two-way whilst continuing to play with the Under 20 Junior Belfast Giants team. A big commitment for a seventeen year old “rookie” who travels to Dumfries for Friday night training and weekend games when his home schedule is free. Currently his training includes three nights a week on-ice, several off-ice training sessions and he also assists with coaching the younger age groups in the Junior Belfast Giants club. The club has a vibrant learning to play programme. Already Jamie has seen a number of his former Scottish defence partners signing and training with several of the Elite league teams in Scotland -Tyler Plews,18, has been signed by the Edinburgh Capitals, Kris Inglis,17, by the Dundee Stars, Stuart Kerr,17, by Braehead Clan. Jamie has been fortunate to have been invited on an occasional basis to train with the Belfast Giants. Jamie will play this season in number 25 Solway Sharks shirt, sponsored by History of Ice Hockey Northern Ireland.

STRICTLY SEASON IS BACK!
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I am a complete sucker for a Saturday night on the sofa, Strictly on the TV, the takeaway ordered and glass of wine in hand to mark the end of a busy week! Last month as Peter Andre was dancing with Janette Manrara I couldn’t take my eyes off her amazing makeup! So in my jammies with no where to go I did a little recreation of that makeup. Tweeted Janette a photo of my handy work and to my total excitement she tweeted back and so did her makeup artist! Made my week!
STOREHOUSE SATURDAY AT DHMB
WE AT DHMB have been so blessed with lovely clients, a busy working day and a beautiful building to do that work in. We are so grateful for all the support our clients show to us
and this event gave us another cause to be thankful. Our plan was that all money from our treatments on Saturday 24th October would go to the work of Storehouse North Down and we would also take food donations. Well, we filled the boot (of a big car) and we raised £938. I went to Storehouse North Down and met Helen who showed me round the warehouse. Only a few
weeks ago the shelves were bare but thanks to so many schools, churches and businesses they were filling back up. The need is great! They make up food hampers for those who literally have nothing to feed themselves or their children. Storehouse ND are showing love and bringing hope to so many people who are in desperate need in our local community.
DATE FOR THE DIARY!
FORMAL SEASON KICKS OFF WITH LOTS OF SPARKLE! The makeup artists at DHMB get super excited for formal season! It is so fun to get to see the dresses, the pics from Pinterest and the makeup ideas they have are just so dramatic! We love it! 20 LOOPMAG.NET
On the 28th November at DHMB we will be having our Mingle & Jingle Festive open day. There will be lots of Christmas gifts, prizes, fizz and food for you to enjoy! We love transforming the salon for Christmas, it is so magical, so please plan to pop in between 10am and 4pm!

Be Well!
STAY HEALTHY THIS WINTER Roisin Armstrong’s Top Ten Guide to Fighting Illness
R
oisin Armstrong, kinesiologist and food author has a special interest in nutrition and how foods affect people’s physical and mental wellbeing. Her first cookbook, Porridge is an Aphrodisiac is aimed at making healthy-eating fast, easy, inexpensive and fun, whilst educating readers on the basic vitamin and mineral content of commonplace foods to encourage a greater interest in how our bodies use the nutritional benefits from our daily foods. Roisin commented: “It is always a lot easier to stay healthy than to fight your way back from ill health. That is true even of the minor but deeply annoying winter coughs, colds and flu. There are many things you can do get yourself winter ready, here are my tips:”
STAY CLEAN! Washing your hands decreases your likelihood of spreading a virus to your nose, mouth or other people. If your immune system is strong, it should be able to fight off the virus if it does enter your body, but washing your hands provides extra protection, especially when 63% of all surfaces on public transport are contaminated with viruses! YOU ARE SWEET ENOUGH! Sugar decreases the function 22 LOOPMAG.NET
of your immune system almost immediately. It is important to avoid sugar if you feel you are coming down with something, but keeping sugar out of your diet as much as you can makes a huge difference to your health. GET ENOUGH SLEEP! Regular rest will keep you strong and ensure that your body has the strength to fight off any potential invaders. Aim for at least seven hours a night. If you are having difficulty sleeping, have a bath in magnesium flakes or Epsom salts, or take a magnesium tablet just before bed. KNOW YOUR METAL! Magnesium not only helps you to sleep, it has a vital role in the immune system, helping support the white blood cells including phagocytes and T- cells. Check with your pharmacist it is safe to take with any other medication you may be taking. GET IMMUNE! Take an immune building herb like Echinacea. Echinaforce, marketed by A.Vogel, a licensed product that contains a standardized dose of both the leaves and stem of the plant. Recent research proved it can reduce the chances of picking up an infection by 58%. It’s thought
20% of colds can lead onto sinusitis, bronchitis, and even pneumonia, this study showed that taking Echinaforce reduced the chances of greater infection by 65%. GARLIC : IMMUNE SYSTEMS BEST FRIEND. It’s antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal, killing a variety of bugs in one sweep. Try to eat it daily and also eat it with fresh root ginger, peeled, chopped and added to soup, curry, stir fry and stews, these two pack a powerful anti-oxidant punch. GO VEGGIE! Use vegetables as your medicines, broccoli contains twice as much vitamin C as an orange and is high in selenium, a powerful anti-oxidant. Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc, onions are anti-viral, anti-oxidant and antihistamine. Parsley contains twice as much iron as spinach and three times as much vitamin C as an orange. Fennel, can help to expel phlegm from the lungs. LOOK AFTER YOUR DIGESTION! Take a probiotic daily; recent research suggests that the health of your digestive system has an amazingly powerful effect on your immune system. Take after breakfast and not in the evening. GOOD GUTS! Regularly eating fermented foods supports your immune system. Foods like kimchi, sauerkraut and Kombucha tea. No sugar, live, natural yoghurt is fantastic. Miso makes great instant soup and tempeh. Check out St George’s Market on Saturdays for local producers. GET MOVING! Exercise boosts your immune system. 50 minutes a week or 20 minutes a day of moderate exercise raises your heart rate, allows you to break a light sweat, helps your health, boosts immunity and helps both your physical and mental health as well as reducing stress levels.

MINT CONDITION Loop Mag | November 2015 | Leaf Relief

MUSINGS ON MASSAGE
O
n recommendation of using peppermint oil to massage the muscles of the upper- and forearm around the tendons of the elbow of a client with “tennis elbow” to ease the source of the strain, I buy a bottle of this inexpensive essence and practise on my own arm. A couple of drops in almond oil make for a sensation and scent so intoxicating that I massage both arms and both legs. The muscles feel suddenly weightless. The aroma is familiar and old-fashioned; vaporous cough lozenges; sticky, sweet, holiday rock and hot, cleansing toothpaste.
26 LOOPMAG.NET
I google peppermint; one link discusses 25 of its properties. I check out Culpeper’s ancient handbook where the benefits of this common plant are many and varied. Mint, for all its local humbleness is a glorious and generous unsung herb to be thanked and enjoyed in even the simplest of settings. Almost all cafes and pubs have mint tea on the menu, as a caffeine-free day- and night-time drink. Because of using dried mint very regularly in the herbal stamp massages I’m familiar with how it helps relieve digestion, congestion, nausea and
headaches: also how it helps pick-up the mood; cool and refreshing to eat and drink, the intense heat of mint oil on the skin however, is a gorgeously different experience. Comforting, therapeutic and available in all health food stores and chemists, go ahead and try it out at home. Jamie says, you know it makes sense.
