routes, high standard of customer care and quality of product and service is the best of the best. “The results speak for themselves, we listen to our customers and give them the valued service they appreciate. Aer Lingus is in fact the only Irish airline to receive a 4-Star rating from Skytrax, which recognises our product offering, service and overall guest experience as word-class. We belong to a select group of only 40 airlines worldwide that can boast a 4-Star guest experience.

“The needs of our passengers are central to everything we do and it is our staff that deliver the awardwinning, world-class experience each day at the airport, on board and beyond. “I would like to thank the travel trade in NI for voting for us. This award further validates that our service and routes out of Belfast City Airport are proving exceptionally popular with our customers and we will continue to give the travelling public of Northern Ireland what they want.”

HIS TOR Y

AUTHOR LAUNCHES NEW BOOK IN NORTH DOWN HISTORY TRILOGY

This month sees the publication of a fascinating new book by Robin Masefield entitled ‘The History of Palace Barracks (to 1969) and Holywood as a Garrison Town’.

T

his richly-illustrated book tells the story of Palace Barracks from the 1890s through to the start of the Troubles. It also describes the relationship – and relationships – over that period between the residents of Holywood and the soldiers who have been stationed in the Barracks. This is the 120th anniversary of the building of the Barracks in the grounds of a former Bishop’s palatial residence, from which the name comes. From 1897 through to 1969, 25 different Regiments have been stationed at Holywood, during peace-time years alone. The story is vividly told, drawing on many Holywood residents’ own recollections, and a range of original sources, together with over 250 images. The research for the book has also involved Regimental Journals, soldiers’ own records, and contemporary newspaper articles, to provide the first-ever comprehensive history of Palace Barracks. The book shows that for much of the time up to the Troubles, Holywood did have the feel of a ‘garrison’ town, given the ease and frequency with which soldiers visited the town and residents visited the Barracks. But it also includes memories of the impact of the Second World War such as

the Belfast Blitz, and the presence of American GIs and German prisoners of war, as well as firsthand accounts of the aftermath of the 1933 Poole family tragedy. The book will appeal both to those with an interest in military history and to those who want to know more about the development of Holywood and the town’s relationship with the Barracks. The book also sheds light on the role of Regiments at Palace Barracks in the context of contemporary events, such as ‘policing’ sectarian violence in Belfast, and Winston Churchill’s visit to the city in 1912. This book is the latest in Robin Masefield’s trilogy of North Down

local history - he has previously published ‘Twixt Bay and Burn, a History of Helen’s Bay and Crawfordsburn’, and ‘Be Careful, Don’t Rush, Celebrating 150 Years of Train Travel between Holywood and Bangor’. All profits from the sale of this book will go to two military charities - the Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA), and to Sandes Soldiers and Airmen’s Centres. The History of Palace Barracks (to 1969) and Holywood as a Garrison Town will be on sale in local bookshops for just £10, from later in November.

OVER 80 YEARS OF TRADITION AT CRAIGAVAD TURKEYS

The Galbraith family have been farming at Craigavad, Holywood since 1935.

I

nitially a dairy farm, our focus now is to raise free range bronze turkeys for Christmas. Our turkeys are sourced from Kelly Turkeys in England, who have been breeding traditional bronze turkeys for over 40 years. The turkeys are fed a wholesome cereal based diet including locally grown oats and wheat, without any antibiotics or growth promoters. They are full of flavour as they are slowly grown and have the best of living conditions,

enjoying open pasture by day and the shelter of a straw filled barn by night. Traditional processing is carried out on the farm, thus reducing the stress of transport and starts mid December. Once the birds have been hand plucked, they are hung for a minimum of 10 days. This helps to tenderise the meat and develop its full flavour. To compliment your turkey we now have our own free range hams and a full range of pork

Holywood Writer’s Third Novel Released

‘Come Home, Harry String’ is the third and eagerly anticipated novel by acclaimed local Holywood writer, Nick Cann.

C

ann’s first novel, ‘Jake’s Eulogy’ was the number one best seller in the Belfast Telegraph paperback listings, dated August 20th 2005. His second book, ‘On The Island’, followed hot on its heels and also generated considerable praise from critics and readers alike. There has since been an eight-year hiatus filled with family commitments (including the birth of Jack and Poppy the twins) and an extensive range of other written and artistic endeavours while continuing his career as a journalist and design consultant. His career path in the past has been nothing if not diverse: Soho night club host, part-time university lecturer in Graphic Design and also NUJ shop steward as he flirted with mainstream UK journalism before

focusing on newspaper and magazine design. Famously quirky, Cann who was once nominated for the title of Northern Ireland’s Best Dressed Man, also featured in one of the more memorable episodes of ‘Come Dine with Me’, shot in Belfast. He says, “Over the years I have turned down more magazines and newspaper jobs than was probably sensible … everything from the top design job at Hello Magazine to redesigning the national newspaper of Poland and quite a bit in between. I usually believe in taking chances when they come along. I’m quite impetuous. It’s led me to try everything from playing football with Rudolf Nureyev to moving from a cushy life in London to Northern Ireland in the midst of the Troubles. But then that was an easy step, Northern Ireland’s my spiritual home.” No surprise then, that Cann’s books are firmly rooted here. His latest novel, set in Cann’s home town of Holywood, deals with central character, Harry String’s struggle to regain his memory after being critically injured in a car crash and then later, his relationship with his married, marriage guidance counsellor, Susan Heywood. The relationship soon leads to violence however, when String is confronted by Susan’s jealous husband.

Nick Cann will be signing copies of ‘Come Home, Harry String’ in Stewart Miller, Holywood on Saturday 18th November from 10.30am, when the book will be on sale at a special discount. He will also be signing copies at the official launch in the Concern bookshop, Holywood on Thursday 23rd November from 6pm, with all proceeds going to the charity. Cann says, “Since ‘Come Home, Harry String’ is set in Holywood, I was keen to launch it in the town, reinforcing the sense of place which pervades the book. Also, it’s out just in time for Christmas and should make a really good stocking-filler.” ‘Come Home, Harry String’ is now on sale at branches of Stewart Miller, No Alibis, Concern Holywood and other outlets province wide. The book can also be bought online at indiego.co.uk.

COMPETITION! For the chance to win a signed copy of Nick Cann’s latest novel just answer the question below: What is the title of Nick’s new book? Send your answer along with your contact details to info@loopmag.net by 30/11/17

he charity started as the Cancer Research Campaign and was amalgamated with the bigger charity Imperial Cancer Research Fund to become Cancer Research N.I. Later it was more advantageous to join with the mainland’s Cancer Research U.K. On average THREE TIMES the amount raised by fund raising groups in N.I. is sent back to our Labs in Belfast. Money raised in N.I. can be ring fenced for a specific research or allocated to N.I. Cancer Research U.K. labs at City Hospital. To celebrate our 30th anniversary some of the committee members over the years joined together for

lunch in Castlereagh Hills Golf Club. Also attending were the Area manager Mark McMahon and the Regional Manager Ryan McClintock. The lunch was topped off by a celebratory cake kindly made for us by Marie Kennedy with the top designed and made by Creative Cakes. The committee was started in 1988 with Annie Johnson in the chair, unfortunately she wasn’t able to attend. The original treasurer, at 98, did attend and she is an inspiration. Two of the Original Committee are still working very hard for the charity. Muriel McMaster and Geraldine Ruddock both were given a gift to thank them for 30 years’ service.

Over 30 years the GRAND TOTAL of £590,058 has been raised and collected by the committee. Our target this year is to break £600,000, and we are well on our way. To commemorate the occasion, notelets have been produced depicting local scenes of East Belfast. These are for sale from the committee and Holywood CRUK shop. Up and coming events are a quiz in November and an interdenominational Carol Service which is to be held in St Colmcille’s Parish Church in Holywood. This event is on 10th December at 7pm. Holywood’s Chelsea Gets Crafting with Ashfield Creatives

Chelsea Taylor from Holywood was one of almost 30 Ashfield Girls’ High School pupils who spent the afternoon getting creatively inspired...

T

he pupils spent the afternoon with Sunday Times Top 100 Entrepreneur Tom Griffiths and leading craft artist Emma Whitehead from Top Floor Gallery to create and promote their crafts for the school’s annual Christmas Fair which takes place on Saturday the 25th November. “The Take Off Project” in conjunction with Belfast City Airport and Voluntary Arts Ireland saw Chelsea and the other pupils work alongside Tom and Emma to choose craft designs for the fair and to design a marketing campaign to help

them engage people across the school and the wider community. The students were encouraged to take the lead, choosing their own ‘Boss’ , Creative Director, Arts Director, Sales Director, Head of Production and head of Digital Marketing. One of the pupils also filmed and edited the event which was presented in a fun and interactive way whereby everyone involved learned about how to make crafts that will sell and how to organise an effective marketing campaign. Special Needs Co- ordinator, and Head of Media, Tracey Rossborough said,

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the girls to gain invaluable experience from the professionals. We already run a very successful lunch time craft club in the school but with this expertise, we envisage that it will become even more popular and the girls’ products will be even more successful”. L-R Crafter Emma Whiteside, Josie Jamison, Chelsea Taylor, Georgia McKeown, Amy Doak, Entrepreneur Tom Griffiths, Mairead McCormick, Voluntary Arts Ireland with teacher Tracy Rossborough

Harland & Wolff Tracer Celebrates Her 105th Birthday

On Saturday 14th October, Mrs Rosemary Graham (nee Howard), who once worked in the Harland and Wolff Drawing Offices as a tracer, celebrated her 105th birthday in the newly opened Titanic Hotel Belfast.

M

rs Graham began working in the shipyard in 1936, and despite leaving when she got married a few years later, was asked back during World War 2 to help the war effort. Mrs Graham has fond memories of working in the shipyard, and her family were keen to mark her birthday by bringing her back to the building she once worked in. Kerrie Sweeney, Chief Executive of Titanic Foundation, was delighted that members of her team could meet with Mrs Graham and her family: “Former employees have been vital to this project, and their knowledge, support, memories and artefacts were invaluable to the restoration of the building. With the Heritage Lottery Fund’s support we have safeguarded the Drawing Offices for future generations and unlocked the commercial

potential of the entire building as a boutique hotel with heritage at its core. This is a truly unique and authentic project for Belfast that could not have happened without the support from the Heritage Enterprise Scheme.” Her son Howard, commented, “My mother has very happy memories of her time at Harland & Wolff. She and all her colleagues were very proud of the work they did during what was a very difficult time.” Mrs Graham was accompanied for lunch by her son, daughter, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great grandson and extended family, and they enjoyed the celebrations in the beautifully restored Wolff Grill. Among the ships Mrs Graham remembers working on is HMS Belfast, ship number 1000 built by Harland & Wolff and launched on the 17th March 1938. The most

significant surviving Second World War Royal Navy warship, HMS Belfast served the navy for more than twenty years in both World War 2, the Korean War and a series of overseas commissions. In 1967 plans were successfully formulated to save it from scrappage and preserve it as a museum ship, with HMS Belfast now moored on the River Thames in London as a branch of the Imperial War Museum. The stunning Drawing Offices have been transformed thanks to National Lottery players through a £5m grant, secured by the Titanic Foundation Ltd from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) through its Heritage Enterprise programme. This innovative programme is designed to bring heritage buildings back into sustainable use, bringing new jobs, new opportunities and new investment to local communities.

SPAR K L E

The Gli erati

Oh we love this time of year… In the makeup world from Halloween Party season onwards is just keeps getting better, brighter, more sparkly, oh and how we love sparkle!

So here is our how to on glitter Makeup by Debs at DHMB

Makeup by Debs at DHMB

24k Gold dust £15 from Deborah Harper makeup and beauty

BIG GLITTER.

If you are going all out for a glitter eye then prep the lid using a cream eyeshadow. This can be a nude shade for the glitter to really shine or you can layer a darker cream eyeshadow with the glitter over the top for super drama.

BARELY THERE GLITTER.

When you would rather shimmer Jane Iredale do the most beautiful pots of loose sparkly powders LITTLE GLITTER. called 24K Gold dust (but come in Sometimes you just want a little hint and you can achieve this with silver, rose gold and bronze). This gives the perfect hint of magic for either a glitter liner, I truly think nowhere does it better than Urban the festive season. Decay. But if you have a little pot TOP TIP 1. You can buy shields of glitter shadow and you don’t want to buy anything new just use that you place underneath the eye so if any eyeshadow or sparkle a little bit of Duo eyelash glue and a pointed detail brush. Line falls onto your cheek you can just peel it all away after. But i the lid (like you are doing your normally just hold a tissue under kohl pencil) with the duo glue the eye and if any glitter does fall and then press the glitter onto then a little piece of sellotape will the line of glue. Perfect for a lift it off. (Though do take a bit of more subtle sparkle.

the stickiness off by rolling the tape over the back of you hand a few times).

TOP TIP 2. Another way of

avoiding glitter all over the face is to pop your eyeshadow and glitter on first and then do your foundation etc afterwards. If you need to totally cleanse under the eye area then it means your not removing all your hard work.

GLITTER DOESN’T HAVE TO BE JUST FOR THE EYES.

There is a trend for sparkle around the eye area, the lips and lets not forget the kits of beard sparkle. Glitter is now literally for everyone!

ADV IC E

BY LIAM BURNS MPS BURNS PHARMACY HOLYWOOD

COME TO PHARMACY FIRST FOR ADVICE AND TREATMENT FOR WINTER AILMENTS Burns Pharmacy in Holywood is getting involved in this year’s Ask Your Pharmacist Week (6 -13th November) by encouraging people to ‘come to pharmacy first’ for advice and treatment for common winter ailments.

A

s many as 60 million visits to GPs and A&E could be avoided each year if more people chose instead to self care with the help of local pharmacies, according to the National Pharmacy Association. Liam Burns MPS said: “Lots of people go to their doctor for cough and cold treatments unnecessarily – your local pharmacy team can help you treat most conditions conveniently and effectively. Pharmacists are trained to know when to refer on to another

healthcare professional, such as your GP, so you should feel confident to make community pharmacy your first port of call for common ailments.” Your local pharmacy team can: • Give tips about reducing your risk of catching colds, flu and other common ailments • Advise on what medicines to stock at home, so that you can respond quickly to the onset of any winter ailments • Supply treatments for the symptoms of colds and flu and many other common ailments • Help people to quit smoking.

Smoking tends to increase the severity of winter ailments like coughs and colds. • Advise on when it’s the right choice to visit your GP or other healthcare provider. Your doctor appointment might be unnecessary if it is about selflimiting illnesses like sore throat or earache. • We are offering flu vaccination service at Burns Pharmacy for £9.00 please call in and see us. 100 Abbey Ring, Holywood BT18 9PF Phone: 028 9042 3639
