HARLAND & WOLFF TRACER CELEBRATES HER 105TH BIRTHDAY

MRS GRAHAM began working in the shipyard in 1936, and despite leaving when she got married a few years later, was asked back during World War 2 to help the war effort.

M

rs Graham has fond memories of working in the shipyard, and her family were keen to mark her birthday by bringing her back to the building she once worked in. Kerrie Sweeney, Chief Executive of Titanic Foundation, was delighted that members of her team could meet with Mrs Graham and her family: “Former employees have been vital to this project, and their knowledge, support, memories and artefacts were invaluable to the restoration of the building. With the Heritage Lottery Fund’s support we have safeguarded the Drawing Offices for future generations and unlocked the commercial potential of the entire building as a boutique hotel with heritage at its core. This is a truly unique and authentic project

for Belfast that could not have happened without the support from the Heritage Enterprise Scheme.” Her son Howard, commented, “My mother has very happy memories of her time at Harland & Wolff. She and all her colleagues were very proud of the work they did during what was a very difficult time.” Mrs Graham was accompanied for lunch by her son, daughter, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great grandson and extended family, and they enjoyed the celebrations in the beautifully restored Wolff Grill. Among the ships Mrs Graham remembers working on is HMS Belfast, ship number 1000 built by Harland & Wolff and launched on the 17th March 1938. The most significant surviving Second World

War Royal Navy warship, HMS Belfast served the navy for more than twenty years in both World War 2, the Korean War and a series of overseas commissions. In 1967 plans were successfully formulated to save it from scrappage and preserve it as a museum ship, with HMS Belfast now moored on the River Thames in London as a branch of the Imperial War Museum. The stunning Drawing

Offices have been transformed thanks to National Lottery players through a £5m grant, secured by the Titanic Foundation Ltd from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) through its Heritage Enterprise programme. This innovative programme is designed to bring heritage buildings back into sustainable use, bringing new jobs, new opportunities and new investment to local communities.

Tapiador, Phillip Tunstall, Richard Read, Oliver Speers, Trevor Wood and Steven Wheeler. All the soloist and corps de ballet roles in the production will be performed by 100 of the finest dancers (aged 8 – 18) from Northern Ireland. Tickets can be purchased online at www.goh.co.uk The Audition English Youth Ballet (EYB) held a huge audition for the ballet at Methodist College in April. Nearly 300 young hopeful dancers turned up to the 2 auditions. Director and founder of EYB – Miss Janet Lewis MBE – was on the lookout for the hottest young dance talent to join her award-winning company for the production in Belfast. Miss Lewis said “EYB is all about providing extra performance experience to young dancers. We saw a very pleasing standard at the audition today and it was lovely to see lots of enthusiasm.”

EYB has helped many of the UK’s top talent springboard their training progress and careers into some of the world’s greatest ballet companies – including the Royal Ballet Company and English National Ballet. Rehearsals for the ballet are taking place at Methodist College Belfast. Oliver Speers is one of EYB’s principal dancers – he previously danced with Ballet Capitole de Toulouse. He coaches the young dancers in rehearsals and he will also be starring in the role of Prince Sergei. He said “the young dancers are treated like professional dancers during rehearsals – we work them hard but the results are fantastic! They learn what the life of a professional dancer

is like. They are living their dream and they just love it!” The young cast will rehearse for just 10 days for the production. There are 100 of the most talented young dancers from Northern Ireland in the production. Principal dancer Amy Drew will be dancing the leading roles of Odette (the White Swan) and Odile (the Black Swan) and she is training the young cast in rehearsals. She previously danced with the Irish National Ballet. Amy said “The advice that I give to the young dancers is that ‘ballet is hard’. But, if you love it, it can be a beautiful and fulfilling career. Keep your head up, and if you face rejection, just keep working hard and focus on your dreams, they can come true!”

Flu is a highly contagious disease that is transmitted through the air and infects people of all ages. tends to mirror theirs, with the same strains expected to cause flu in the UK and Ireland. If you are 12 years of safe or older and meet the eligibility criteria we can administer you flu vaccination for just £10. Simply call into our pharmacy and complete a brief questionnaire and consent form. Our trained pharmacist will explain the vaccine, the administration and any possible side effects that might occur. LOCAL HISTORIAN LAUNCHES 15TH BOOK

2

CASTLEREAGH UPDATED is an update of an earlier book with newly discovered photographic records and memories of how life has developed on the Castlereagh Road over the past century

T

he name of Castlereagh is described in A Dictionary of Ulster Place-Names by Patrick McKay as ‘Irish, An Caislean Riabhach ‘the grey castle’. Castlereagh is named from a stone house or castle which was the stronghold of the Clandeboye O’Neills in the 16th century.’ Aidan was awarded the BEM in the 2017 New Year Honours List as a fundraiser for Marie Curie and services to patients with cancer in Northern Ireland. The grand surroundings of Hillmount Garden Centre at Gilnahirk were once again the venue for Aidan’s latest book publication. After the guests were treated to tea/coffee and short bread they settled down to be entertained with some Castlereagh stories. 1. Most people had a family or home connection with the area including Councillor Tim Morrow (APNI) who was elected Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council in June 2017. He represents the electoral

district of Castlereagh East and kindly made some introductory remarks at the packed book launch. 2. Aidan Campbell with guests Bob and Anne Malloy plus Thompie Steele from the East Belfast Historical Society. Thompie was particularly interested in the Castlereagh Updated story as he taught for many years at Orangefield High School on Castlereagh Road and recently coauthored a history of school. 3. Aidan’s wife Christine Campbell worked hard at the book stall with Angela Neill and Tom Conway. Here Christine discusses the content of ‘Castlereagh Updated’ with Agnes and Phelim Green and Kathleen Howard whose father was once Works Engineer at the Goblin Factory on Castlereagh Road. 4. Guide Dogs NI is one of several local charities to benefit from sales of Aidan’s local history books. Some of the other charities include Marie Curie, MS Society and Mission to Seafarers’. A great turnout from staff and volunteers

Some keen members of the East Belfast Historical Society in attendance were Daphne Jones who once attended Mountpottinger Primary School and Noel Brown whose family were leading retailers in East Belfast with premises at 277 Woodstock Road and Dessie Cowan. 6. East Belfast Historical Society members listening attentively are Jack Eaton, (formerly a teacher at

THE CHARITY started as the Cancer Research Campaign and was amalgamated with the bigger charity Imperial Cancer Research Fund to become Cancer Research N.I.

Money raised in N.I. can be ring fenced for a specific research or allocated to N.I. Cancer Research U.K. labs at City Hospital. To celebrate our 30th anniversary some of the committee members over the years joined together for lunch in Castlereagh Hills Golf Club. Also attending were the Area manager Mark McMahon and the Regional Manager Ryan McClintock.

The lunch was topped off by a celebratory cake kindly made for us by Marie Kennedy with the top designed and made by Creative Cakes. The committee was started in 1988 with Annie Johnson in the chair, unfortunately she wasn’t able to attend. The original treasurer, at 98, did attend and she is an inspiration. Two of the Original Committee are still working very hard for the charity. Muriel McMaster and Geraldine Ruddock both were given a gift to thank them for 30 years’ service. Over 30 years the GRAND TOTAL of £590,058 has been raised and collected by the committee. Our

Lewis Festival includes a fantastic poetry competition open to everyone. Entrants are invited to write a very short poem, based on the festival theme ‘Surprised by Joy’ about what surprises them about east Belfast, in less than 140 characters. Fantastic prizes for winners and runners up in primary, secondary and adult categories will be awarded at a special event in December in W5 who are sponsors of the competition along with Hewitt & Gilpin Solicitors and Arts & Business NI. Closing date is Friday 24th November at 5pm. Plus, look out for special, interactive poetry mini-workshops in residential care facilities, libraries and community groups. Rachel Kennedy, Festival Director, commented: “We are delighted to return with the 5th C.S. Lewis Festival. With the festival theme Surprised by Joy’, our Curator Jan Carson has created a joyful, diverse and inclusive programme which celebrate all facets of

this literary great. Festival goers will step into Lewis’s world to explore his imagination, legacy and huge cultural significance on the City of Belfast, especially the east of the City, and how it had an impact on him. We invite everyone, from across east Belfast and beyond, to not only enjoy the range of festival events and activities taking place across five days, but to understand the joy the city, and surrounding area, brought to C.S. Lewis and continues to bring to artists living here today. I would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to our Principal Funder, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, funders Belfast City Council and Arts & Business NI and sponsors, Hewitt & Gilpin, Translink, William Collins, Connswater Shopping Centre and Retail Park, and W5. Their support has been invaluable in making the festival happen.” For all the info visit eastsidearts.net. Follow the festival on Facebook /CSLewisFestival and Twitter @CSLewisFest #CSLFest17.

PUG’S AD V I CE

LIFE

By Patrick McKee BVetMed, BSc, MRCVS

I want to tell you a little about one of our favorite breeds - Pugs. Originally from China, Pugs were brought to Europe in the sixteenth century

T

hey gained popularity during the Victorian era and are now one of our favorite pets. They have very distinct personalities and a flat-faced appearance. Pugs are often described as being a large dog trapped in a small dog’s body, as they often are very strong-willed, as anyone who has tried to clip a Pug’s nails will be quick to tell you! Although Pugs make great family pets and usually get on great with other dogs and children, their breeding means that they are susceptible to certain health problems. These include corneal ulcers, skin fold dermatitis, and a breathing problem called “brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome” (BOAS), which we’re going to focus on today. A

Pugs are often described as being a large dog trapped in a small dog’s body, as they often are very strong-willed, as anyone who has tried to clip a Pug’s nails will be quick to tell you!

Pug’s very short face makes them more likely to suffer from difficulty breathing due to small nostrils and narrow airways. Signs that your Pug may be suffering include: snoring, snorting, regurgitation of food after eating, intolerance to heat, and if left untreated can cause collapse or life-threatening sudden laryngeal failure in the windpipe. Sounds awful, doesn’t it? However, there are things we can do to help our precious friends. We can help them by feeding them carefully to keep them fit, as heavier dogs have greater breathing difficulty. But if you think your pug is already showing the signs mentioned above, it could well be that we should be considering surgery to help them

HOUND DOG Elvis might have been nothin’ but a Hound Dog but It ’s Now or Never for his four- legged namesake – guide dog puppy Presley! ---------GUI DE D O G S

PRESLEY IS ‘TOP OF THE PUPS’!

THE GORGEOUS one-year-old golden Labrador was sponsored and named by the Official Elvis Presley Fan Club of Northern Ireland (OEPFCNI).

or the first few months of his life he has been cared for by volunteer ‘puppy walkers’ but now, just weeks after the 40th anniversary of The King’s death, Presley has left Northern Ireland to start his specialised training at the Guide Dogs’ Training School in Forfar, Scotland. Over the next four months, he will learn basic guiding skills, such as stopping at kerbs and avoiding obstacles. When he has completed this stage, Presley will progress to advanced training with a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor who will complete its advanced training and match the dog to a person with sight loss. Kath Munro, Puppy Training Supervisor at Guide Dogs NI, said: “Presley progressed well through his puppy walking stage of training. He’s a handsome, cheeky lad

who shows real potential for the job. We wish him well as he moves on to his early training and a huge well done to his puppy walkers for all their hard work and dedication over the past year!” Janet Baxter, Vice President at OEPFCNI, added: “As an Official Fan Club, part of our remit is to raise money for charity to continue Elvis’ legacy as he was famously such a generous person. “We were thrilled to meet Presley at one of our club nights and I think it’s safe to say ther wasn’t one person who didn’t fall in love with him! Everyone involved in the entire process of raising, training, placing and fundraising for Guide Dogs does a fantastic job and we are delighted to have played a small part in it.”

MISSING CAT FROM SYDENHAM AVENUE AREA

The owners of Elsa have got in touch with us to see if any of our readers have spotted her recently? Elsa is a pure grey Russian Blue cat, just under two years old, who went missing from the Sydenham Avenue area of East Belfast on Wednesday, September 27. She is microchipped and neutered and shy of strangers. She has a sensitive stomach and can only eat certain foods so her owner is worried. If anyone has been feeding a cat that looks like Elsa or taken her in believing she is a stray, a vet will scan her microchip for free. Please check sheds. Vans in the area means she may also have traveled. Police have been notified. BAKING

Introducing Irwin’s Sourdough and Irwin’s Seeds & Grains

To celebrate the art of baking bread, and the launch of its new Artisan range, Portadown-based Irwin’s Bakery has created a selection of delicious recipes to introduce Irwin’s Sourdough and Irwin’s Seeds & Grains.

Smoked Belfast Ham And Wholegrain Mustard On Irwin’s Artisan Sourdough And Homemade Piccalilli with 5-Minute Chilli Bean Soup Ingredients 4 slices Irwin’s Artisan Sourdough 50g thinly-shaved Belfast ham Baby gem lettuce 5g wholegrain mustard 15g homemade piccalilli Pinch cracked black pepper 200ml chilli bean soup Sandwich Assembly Take 2 slices of Irwin’s Artisan Sourdough and spread each slice with a dollop of mustardy sweet piccalilli. Layer lots of shaved ham slices on top of the piccalilli. Top with washed leaves of baby gem lettuce. Season with a pinch of rock salt and a twist of cracked black pepper. Spread the wholegrain mustard on the second slice and flip over. Top the sandwich with this lid of Irwin’s Artisan Sourdough. Cut in half and enjoy with a bowl of piping hot chilli bean soup. Homemade Piccalilli 150g cauliflower 50g cucumber 18 silverskin onions 50g carrots 10g cornflour 125ml vinegar ¼ tsp cumin 2 tsp turmeric 2 tsp English mustard powder 10g pickling spice Cut all the vegetables into small dice. Peel the silverskin onions. Season the vegetables and onions with rock salt and leave for 1 hour. In a mixing bowl combine the spices with the vinegar, sugar, honey and English mustard. Add the cornflour and turmeric and mix to a smooth paste.

Place all in a thick bottomed pan and bring to the boil. Drain the vegetables and add to the smooth paste. Sterilise the jars and add the warm/hot piccalilli and seal jar with an acid proof lid. Store in a cool dry place for 6-8 weeks to help the pickle flavour infuse. Use as needed.

Armagh as a grocer and was baking cakes and breads to sell in his shop. His wife Ruth and sister in law Flossie did the baking at first, the demand for fresh bread continued to rise amongst the local community. By 1932 to meet an increasing demand for their products, distribution was expanded with a fleet of horse drawn and motor vehicles to deliver fresh bread daily on a wider basis. Business continued to prosper and with it employment; in 1995 when current premises were outgrown, W.D. Irwin and Sons moved to new purpose built 100,000 sq ft premises at Carn. who dedicate their time to come into our school to help our girls participate in hands-on activities that will help them understand and enjoy science as a subject, and possibly a future career.” “Biology week has been a great opportunity for children and young people in our school to try out experiments and learn about the unseen world of science, such as microbiology.”

To mark this year’s Biology Week, Strathearn Preparatory Department in Belfast discovered the world of fantastic microbes and where to find them.

T

he girls from the Preparatory Department’s Prep 3 and Prep 7 classes put on their lab coats, safety googles and clinical gloves to take part in an interactive science workshop. The science day was led by microbiologist Dr Linda Oyama, Microbiology Society Champion & Early Careers Executive, and research fellow at Queen’s University Belfast. The girls participated in experiments using blue lights, petri dishes and swabs to see microbes and germs to the visible eye, and find

out which microbes are good and harmful to humans. Mrs Barbara Mawhinney, Head of Strathearn Preparatory Department mentions the opportunities that the Prep uses to explore the world of ‘active science,’ as she comments – “In Strathearn Preparatory Department we are passionate about encouraging our girls to learn through play and discovery. Dynamic science talks and workshops provided by science professionals such as Dr Oyama brings science to life and invites

the pupils to be actively involved exploring and trying out practical activities whilst learning and having fun.” Nicola Connery, Principal of Strathearn School said – “Strathearn School is dedicated to

supporting the children and young people at all levels of learning by providing opportunities for them to explore and question the world around them. We are grateful for the parents and visitors from medical and science backgrounds

PERFECT CHEMISTRY FOR BELFAST HARBOUR & SCIENCE STARZ

Belfast Harbour has partnered with Science Starz in a bid to interest local children in science-based subjects with a view to inspiring NI’s scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians of the future.

T

he joint enterprise sees Belfast Harbour sponsor a number of Science Starz workshops in nursery and primary schools across Belfast, with children as young as three years old participating in science-based lessons and experiments. As an extension of Belfast Harbour’s wider commitment to supporting the harbour area’s environment, the workshops focused on topics including: Pollution at Sea, Reducing Carbon Emissions, Reducing Noise Pollution and Water Pressure. The schools which took part are: Loughview Integrated Primary School, Strandtown Primary School and Currie Primary School. Jenni Barkley, Belfast Harbour Communications and Corporate

Responsibility Manager, said: “Science Starz is a valuable initiative which aims to interest and excite children about the sciences, which is a terrific fit with Belfast Harbour’s ongoing commitment to supporting young people in education. We were particularly drawn to the programme’s emphasis on the importance of being aware of and taking care of our environment, not just globally but also on a very immediate and local basis. We are delighted to work with Science Straz to help take that message to the youngest possible audiences.” Rose McMurrough, co-founder of Science Starz, said; “Our team at Science Starz were extremely proud of the budding scientists from the five schools

we visited. The hands-on scheme, engages with children at a higher level, encouraging a more interactive programme which in turn helps them absorb and retain information more efficiently than traditional methods. The support we received from Belfast Harbour not only enabled our project to happen, but provided the children with important context, showing

how they can affect change and make a difference within their own community and beyond.” Pictured at the Strandtown Primary School Science Starz workshop are primary 5 pupils (from L-R) Adam, Rose Hutton from Science Starz, Natalia, Jenni Barkley Belfast Harbour’s Communications and Corporate Responsibility Manager.

HOW TO MEASURE FAT LOSS PROGRESS WITHOUT THE SCALE?

> FITNESS By Stefanie

HOW TO STOP FOOD CRAVINGS

There are so many ways to measure your fat loss progress that don’t involve standing on the scales! A lot of us have a bad mental attitude towards the number on the scales and sometimes it’s better not to use them at all, as they can put a dampener on our progress!

Ttwo cycles I see most often: 1. Don’t eat it, complain about not eating it then binge on it later. 2. Eat it, enjoy , resume normal life.

H

N

ow most people will fall under category 1; most of us have developed this unhealthy relationship with food and view everything as good or bad/healthy or unhealthy, and the more negative we feel about the EE worse the relationship becomes. The more cravings we develop and the more potential binges that we have! I say it time and time again one donut won’t make you put on weight just like one salad won’t make you lose weight but eating 10 donuts might be detrimental to your fat loss goals so join the moderation party! You are going to crave things, it’s normal, and indulging in a “treat” here and there will not harm you! Eat it, enjoy it and try to make it fit into your daily calorie allowance. In other words, have the donut now, and then maybe just have vegetables with you dinner instead of a carbohydrate dense meal. Life is about balance, take the good with the bad, eat, live, be consistent with your goals and have some patience! So here are my top tips: 1. Don’t think about what to avoid in your diet think about what to add! 2. Be conscious of your calories. 3. Fill up on vegetables and fibre dense foods. 4. Do not deprive yourself. 5. Eat in moderation. 6. Focus on performance not aesthetics.

ere’s a few better ways to judge: Belt / trouser size: has your belt gone down a notch or are your trousers starting to feel a bit lose? Then your heading in the right direction. Picture / mirror progress: Are you starting to notice some definition in areas you previously didn’t? Congratulations. How your feeling mentally: Are you starting to look at yourself in a positive way? Feeling and saying good things about yourself instead of constantly putting yourself down? That’s a huge win in anyone’s books! General strength: Not specifically fat loss but it’s a great confidence boost seeing your strength gains go up! All your hard work is paying off!! Remember you can’t mess this up, you are never more than one bite away or one workout away from getting back on track!

FANCY DROPPING A DRESS SIZE OR TWO?

Then you will want to take part in my little black dress challenge?

H

ere is your reminder that the Christmas parties are only a few weeks away! It’s time to start thinking about all those festive outfits and little black dresses that you are going to be wearing. Don’t wait to January to start the post Christmas fad diets. Get in control now and strive to be that happy, healthy, confident lady that you know you can be! My LBD Challenge is a 6 week plan designed to boost your motivation, keep you focussed, help you lose weight and drop a dress size or 2, just in time for the Christmas celebrations... Are you ready?

Seasonal flu is one of the biggest causes of shortterm illness, it is highly contagious and can affect people of all ages. Even otherwise healthy people can suffer debilitating symptoms.

In the area of spectacle frames, you might think things do not change much. In fact, change is constant in terms of shapes, colours, materials, design and mechanical construction.

hen you want to know what is the latest is in the world of opticians and keep up to date with the trends, sometimes you need to do some exploring. In early October I attended an International Optical Trade Fair in Paris. This is an annual event with around 35,000 visitors all wanting to see what is the latest. Over floor space of 80,000 square metres (that is more than 10 football pitches) there were around 900 companies exhibiting their products, including 1,400 different brands of spectacle frames. Each brand offers a range of frames with several models and colours. All in all, there would have been easily over half a million frames on show, so plenty of choice! So, what was new? Shapes: There was a huge variety of shapes but round was definitely a recurring theme and the new round frames were typically smaller. There was also the iconic panto shape in many subtle variations. This harks back to the NHS styles of the 1950’s and 60’s with a high hinge to give a wide “pantoscopic”, wide-angled view. All going

to prove that fashion does go in cycles and everything comes back into style eventually. Colours: To me it seemed the whole rainbow was on display and I did not identify any dominant colour. I spotted plenty of tortoiseshell browns and classic black but also lots of vibrant new colour combinations and laminations. Materials: On show were frames made using wood, horn, leather, feathers and even vinyl records. Design: In terms of trends there were bold frames that make a statement, including eyelash effects on the frame and huge “mask” frames that cover more of your face. And if you don’t see anything to your taste and would like to design your own frame it is now possible via 3D printing. So as Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr would have said, “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.” ROSEMARY MCWATTERS OPTICIANS 41 Comber Rd BT16 2AA. 028 9048 6222 mcwattersopticians.co.uk

Dry scalp and Dandruff, Not The Same Thing! BY SABRINA ROBINSON | SR HAIRDRESSING Since winter can bring the dreaded dry scalp or make an existing scalp condition worse i have compiled information on two most common scalp conditions and some treatments for these and how to combat them.

ABOUT DANDRUFF

Your skin constantly produces new skin cells and sheds old cells to stay healthy. Dandruff can occur when this cycle of skin renewal speeds up. This leads to patches of dead skin forming on the scalp that come away into the hair. Dandruff isn’t a sign of dirty hair, although it can be triggered by too much washing as well as too little. Dandruff can also be linked to:

• Psoriasis • Eczema • Stress • Some hair products • A weakened immune system • Excessive use of hair products • Cold weather and dry indoor heating • Stress and anxiety • Infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate rinsing of the scalp and hair Signs and symptoms of dandruff Dandruff flakes are larger than dry scalp flakes and are harder to come off the scalp. You will experience itching and usually have scalp odour. Dandruff is a common skin condition that causes white or grey flakes of skin to appear on the scalp and in the hair. The flakes usually fall from your scalp on to your shoulders. Your scalp may also feel dry and itchy. Dandruff is not contagious or harmful, but it can be unpleasant and difficult to get rid of. Treating dandruff Look for shampoos containing one of the following ingredients: • zinc pyrithione • salicylic acid • selenium sulphide (or selenium sulfide)

• ketoconazole • coal tar Read the instructions that come with the shampoo before using it to check if it’s suitable for you and see how often it should be applied. If you are unsure check with a pharmacist they can offer advice if you need it. It’s particularly important to leave the shampoo in your hair for at least five minutes before washing it out, leave it to work in your hair. Try these shampoos for a month to see if your dandruff improves. You might need to try more than one type to find one that works for you. You may be able to use the shampoo less often once your symptoms improve, but your dandruff will probably come back if you stop using it completely. Ask your stylist for advice on what professional products are best suited.

ABOUT DRY SCALP

This is caused by the lack of moisture from the skin and can be caused by the application of shampoo and conditioner , cold weather, product build up, hard water, and bad diet fro example to much caffeine. Signs and symptoms are itching and small white flakes that come off easily. The treatment for dry scalp is using the correct shampoos and hair products to cleanse the scalp and to help restore the pH on your scalp and remove build up left behind by shampoos, conditioners, and other hair products. By giving your scalp a light scalp message using natural oils such as olive oil, jojoba oil, this will help hydrate and bring moisture back into your scalp. Ask your stylist for advice on what professional products are best suited.

et in a Belfast hospital during the 1960’s, the Ward Sister rules the roost. The play follows the fortunes and misfortunes

of the patients in the male surgical ward. When Sammy, a Linfield supporter is admitted followed by Felix who supports Glentoran we can be

sure mayhem follows! Add to the mix a giddy nurse, a domineering wife, femme fatale and an allin-wrestler then we have all the ingredients for a typical evening of pure Cree manic magic. All proceeds went to Action Cancer’s East Belfast Community Group. Action Cancer provides a range of lifesaving and support services to the local community costing £4 million every year. The charity receives no government funding and relies entirely on support from the local community to raise the money needed to maintain its cancer prevention, detection and support services. Action Cancer offers free breast screening to women aged 4049 and over 70; health checks to men and women aged 16+; counselling and complementary therapies to children (aged 5+) and adults; and health promotion in schools, communities and workplaces. These services are

delivered regionally throughout Northern Ireland and from the charity’s Big Bus, which visits 235 locations every year. The hard work and support Action Cancer receives from the local community groups allows the charity to continue the work we do throughout Northern Ireland and Action Cancer appreciates all the wonderful support the community give towards the Action Cancer East Belfast Group. Action Cancer’s East Belfast Community are a group of hardworking individuals who actively fundraise for our services at Action Cancer House and on board our Big Bus. The group are looking for volunteers to help them with Bag Packs and collections.

The eminent artist Colin McGookin lived and worked in East Belfast for many years and this exhibition brings together many of the paintings he produced when he lived close to what is now the EastSide Gallery. The artworks reflect both the turbulent history of Northern Ireland, as well as the colour, sadness and joy he personally experienced during those years. Colin was born in Belfast and, after graduating from Art College, he co-founded the Artists Collective of Northern Ireland in 1984 and was one of the founder members of the Queen Street Studios in 1988. He was elected a member of the Royal Ulster Academy, and won first prize at the prestigious Claremorris Open. This exhibition has been curated by the ArtisAnn Gallery, 70 Bloomfield Avenue, a 3-minute walk from the EastSide Visitor Centre. Admission is free.

History

BY OUR INCR EDIBLE R E SIDENT HIS TOR IAN AIDAN C AMPBELL

A poignant look at East Belfast history as we consider the first world war and a poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) which was published in The Times newspaper, 21st September 1914. One of the verses in the poem contains the words:

I

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

n a previous article I mentioned that my grandfather Billy Walker was employed by the Great Northern Railway during his entire working life. He was from Co Armagh, not from East Belfast, although he once attended a wedding reception at a hotel called ‘Cranethorpe’ now better known as the Park Avenue Hotel. Pte Billy Walker, ASC S4-064591, entered war service on 5th October 1915. A story was told in the family that the recruiting Sergeant asked him ‘What skills have you got?’ and Billy answered ‘I was brought up on a farm and can drive a team of horses’. So he spent the war as a driver in the Army Service Corps and because he was too young he also told a lie about his age. But he survived to marry Henrietta Anderson whom he met at a British Legion dance in Omagh and they had 9 children and 20 grandchildren (including me). Wedding reception of Rev AJE Campbell and Edith Walker (my parents) at Cranethorpe Hotel (now Park Avenue) on 2nd April 1956. Billy is peeping out in the back row between the bride and groom.

Herbert (Bertie) Hall joined the North Irish Horse and the story in the family was that he left school and signed on a year early. Apparently the North Irish Horse had a minimum age limit for recruitment of 19 years old and as Bertie was only 18 years old and his father was not well pleased when he joined up. Bertie Hall carried a copy of the New Testament in his breast pocket during WW1 and he was once hit by a piece of shrapnel. He had the good book in his breast pocket and the shrapnel entered Revelation and travelled on through as far as Luke’s Gospel. So his life was literally saved by the New Testament. When he returned from The Great War he arrived at the Great Northern Railway Station in Great Victoria Street. He was taken home and hosed down with water in the back yard because he was infested with fleas. He also mentioned that trench warfare was dreadful. Bertie Hall is standing second from right in this wedding group. The Hall family home was a grand house called ‘Laurington’ (now better known as ‘Kincora’) which is

at 236 Upper Newtownards Road on the corner of North Road. This wedding photograph was taken at the front door of Laurington in about 1925. The married couple are Lily Hall, Bertie’s sister, far left with flowers, and she married Tom Emerson who she is standing alongside. James H. McCormick was a professional soldier who joined the army as a young man and had fought as a Lieutenant in the Boer War. He then went to Canada in 1901 under a Canadian government settlement scheme for the building of the Canadian Pacific railway. He lived in the town of Lloydminster and became an auctioneer, estate agent and Deputy Mayor. In 1914 when the First World War began he raised a band of men who joined the Winnepeg Regiment to serve ‘King & Country’. As a Lieutenant (later Major) in the First World War with the Canadian Infantry he was awarded the DSO for bravery at the battle of Vimy Ridge. He had been recommended for the VC and was wounded several times. His citation records: ‘Major JH McCormick for conspicuous gallantry and

devotion to duty. He led his men through a barrage to make the attack. When held up by an enemy machine gun he led a bombing party and captured the gun and killed the crew after a hand-tohand fight lasting ten minutes. He finally reached the objective where he took command of the remains of another company, consolidated the position, and beat off four counterattacks. His cheerfulness and courage inspired all his men” James H McCormick later became a Stormont MP and lived in a house named ‘Vimy’ at 31 Gilnahirk Road. Vimy was named after the WW1 battle where he was awarded the DSO. It is located next door to Cherryvalley Dental Care at 33 Gilnahirk Road. In this photo of LOL 744 Forsythe’s True Blues Temperance Lodge on 12th July 1904 outside Castlereagh House you can just about make out a young John Forsythe Harvey in the front row sitting to the left of the bass drum. John’s grandfather was John Forsythe, who founded the Lodge and he is sitting in the centre of the middle row. His picture is also on

the banner. John (senior) was a wealthy general merchant with a grocery shop at Boundary Street and also a substantial property owner with assets on the Shankill Road. Castlereagh House was a grand family home with castle-style battlements, bay windows and a flag pole on the roof. It was situated in large private gardens and on ground now occupied by the SONI electricity office complex at 12 Manse Road, Castlereagh which is known as ‘Castlereagh House Control Centre’. When John Forsythe Harvey joined the army he was originally a Lance Corporal and then promoted to Captain in the 9th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He entered service in 1916 and was killed by a German sniper in April 1918. In a letter to John’s brother William, fellow officer Lieut. W.H. Patterson was badly wounded and wrote from hospital an account of John’s final moments whose solemn last words were ‘You had better go now. Tell mother’. In a future article I will consider some East Belfast men who volunteered for service in the Second World War
