This gave a grand total of £89,847.69. Councillor Bloomfield said: “I would like to thank everyone who has supported the wide variety of fundraising events held during my term as Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City council. support given by the former Mayor and Mayoress of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council. The amount raised is overwhelming and will ensure that TinyLife continues to offer a range of family support services to the 6 babies born too soon every day in Northern Ireland. Many of our tiny babies arrive as early as 24 weeks, weighing as little as 1lb, it is vitally important that their parents receive both practical and emotional support during this critical time. It was a pleasure to work alongside the Mayor and Mayoress and their team.” Councillor Bloomfield held a range of events through his mayoral terms such as: Lisburn City Old Vehicle Club Vintage Car Run, Half Marathon & Fun Run, Twilight by Fairylight, Tesco Bag Pack, Fireworks Display at Thiepval Barracks, Carol Singing Bow Street Mall, Charity Table Quiz, Charity Golf Day, a Ladies Vintage Tea Evening and many more www.tinylife.org.uk L-R CLLR JEFFREY DUDGEON, DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON, CITY GROWTH AND REGENERATION COMMITTEE, MARK NAGURSKI, FOUNDER, MAKEMATIC, LINSEY FARRELL, DIRECTOR, URBAN VILLAGES, THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE
director for the National Charity Partnership, said: “Beat the Street has created a real buzz in Northern Ireland. The awards event showcased just how successful this game has been in engaging the community over the past two years, in total helping more than 65,000 people to get moving! We hope residents across the areas will continue to explore their local area and stay active at their own level now that the game has finished. Type 2 diabetes can double a person’s risk of developing heart and circulatory disease and both conditions can lead to other health problems, but they are largely preventable. Projects like Beat the Street are helping hundreds of thousands of people to reduce their risk of both by getting active and staying active.”

The Global Cedar Challenge, funded by Active Belfast, is a project aiming to improve the health and wellbeing of people with disabilities in Greater Belfast. Teams and individuals have been challenged to collectively cycle and walk the distance of the circumference
of the earth and further encouraged to support healthy eating for participants. Chief Executive of The Cedar Foundation, Stephen Mathews commented, “We were delighted to bring members of our inclusive cycling club along to Victoria Park to clock up their miles for the challenge. The teams so far have completed a total of 4,798 miles between Belfast and Bratsk and have over 9,000 left to complete the challenge so every little bit counts. I very much appreciate Deputy Lord Mayor and other political representatives in the East Belfast area including MP Gavin Robinson and Speaker of the Assembly Robin Newton for taking time out their from busy schedules to attend the event and hear more about the services of The Cedar Foundation”. Speaking about the initiative Deputy Lord Mayor, Sonia
Copeland said: “This is an amazing challenge for everyone, not just those with disabilities, to take part in and I urge as many people as possible to support The Global Cedar Challenge. Keeping active and healthy is important for all of us and every lap or cycle ride or walk we do in our daily lives is helping The Cedar Foundation improve the lives of those with disabilities and to support their families” added councillor Copeland Michele Bryans programme manager for the Connswater Community Greenway commented, “It was a pleasure to host The Cedar Foundation in Victoria Park. It is fantastic to see the Connswater Community Greenway being used by projects such as the Cedar Global Challenge. Victoria Park continues to be a safe, accessible and inclusive venue for activities such as the
inclusive cycling club. We wish you the best of luck in your challenge.” The Cedar Foundation, established in 1941, supports individuals and families living with disability, autism and brain injury to live the lives they choose. Cedar delivers a wide range of services that enable both children and adults to get the most out of life and to be fully included in their communities. EAST BELFAST’S LASER PROTOTYPES COMMITS TO ADDITIVE RESEARCH
The programme, launched by Catalyst Inc, will receive €8.5million funding from the EU’s INTERREG VA Programme and will include a focus on additive manufacturing. LPE is committed to helping ensure that Northern Ireland continues to be a global leader in this innovative field of research.” Professor Eileen Harkin-Jones, Ulster University, said: “It is vital that universities and industry work together for a wider economic benefit. We have previously worked with LPE on a number of research projects and are delighted that they have lent their support to the INTERREG programme, a programme which we believe will facilitate some of the most exciting and advanced research currently being undertaken globally in advanced technology solutions.” LPE has also recently lent its support to the new Science
Foundation Ireland Confirm Centre based at the University of Limerick. The Confirm Centre, part of a €74 million investment in new research centres by the Irish Government, aims to transform Ireland’s manufacturing industry to become a world leader in smart manufacturing. It is expected that the centre will undertake a number of research projects in the areas of advanced manufacturing. It is extremely important that SMEs, such as LPE, continue to invest in research into additive manufacturing techniques so that industry can reap the full benefits that these emerging technologies offer. Tom explains: “The latest additive manufacturing
technologies have the potential to revolutionise manufacturing but further work is needed to standardise the processes in order to give industry the confidence needed to fully adopt it into their design process. We see being involved in research with academia as critical both to the future of our industry and also to our success as an innovative company operating on the leading edge of additive manufacturing technology. It is fantastic to see these initiatives supported by the government and the EU, as this type of research is vital to the growth of additive manufacturing within the UK and Ireland.”

I am now worried how we are going to get by on one income. Would we be entitled to any financial assistance? “
Please get in touch so we can discuss your case in detail. With all your income details, including housing costs and more information on the kind of care you have to provide for your son I will be able to do a complete assessment to see if you have any entitlements. I will be looking at entitlement to benefits such as Tax Credits, Housing Benefit (depending if you are renting), Rates Relief (if you are a homeowner) Disability Living Allowance and Carer’s Allowance. The Belfast Hills Partnership nominated Tom into the Ulster Architectural Heritage Societies prestigious ‘Heritage Angel Awards’.
T
his award aims to celebrate the efforts of local people, who have saved historic buildings and places and is funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and the Department for Communities. This is the first year that Northern Ireland has taken part in this UK wide Award Scheme. For the past three years Tom, an Archaeology student has volunteered to work on the Belfast Hills community archaeology dig outreach project and shared his knowledge and experience with the participating groups. Each dig has involved approximately 400 school children and 200 members of the public on various open days, training courses as well as walk &
talk events. The aim of these digs is to bring the past to life, enabling local people to gain a better understanding and appreciation of their local heritage. As a small charity the Belfast Hills Partnership budgets are limited meaning that they cannot afford as many archaeologists as they would like to work with the large numbers of both school children and members of the public who want to get involved in the project. Tom has not simply assisted staff, he undertook a major role in leading workshops with school groups, giving radio interview for the local press, undertaking flint knapping exhibitions for the general public, giving generously of his time with
individual visitors who want to see finds uncovered from the site. Lizzy Pinkerton Scheme Manager for the Belfast Hills Partnership said “Tom’s passion for helping people see the past in a whole new light is evident to everyone who has had the privilege of working with him. We often had to remind Tom that he needed to take a break,
JAM CARD
Belfast based social enterprise NOW Group have created an initiative called the JAM Card which allows people with learning difficulties and communication barriers to ask for an extra minute of patience when in customer service situations.

DO YOUR EMPLOYEES HAVE JUST A MINUTE FOR PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES AND COMMUNICATION BARRIERS? The organisation NOW Group is now launching a training platform for businesses – including an online course - which will allow them to ensure their staff are equipped to provide an excellent service to JAM Card users.

JAM Card Friendly Organisations The team behind the JAM Card are launching a package to businesses that will allow them to become JAM Card Friendly. There is the option of an online training course for staff which covers JAM Card awareness or a half day face to face training session with one of NOW’s experienced staff. Organisations who undertake the training will be provided with marketing materials to allow them to alert their customers that they welcome JAM Card holders, including a window sticker and logos that can be used online and on relevant documents such as headed paper. The training has been tested by partner organisations during a development phase including Belfast City Council. John Walsh, City Solicitor at Belfast City Council comments, “Belfast City Council is delighted to be a JAM Card Friendly Organisation as we are committed to improving our customer service to everyone. When NOW Group approached us we could immediately see the benefits for those who use our service. We believe that the training platform is a valuable resource which has been tested by some of our staff and I look forward to rolling it out across the council.” Increasing confidence and independence The JAM Card app says ‘Just a minute’ on one side and ‘Please be patient I have a learning difficulty’ on the other, while the app allows users to choose what their screen says from a list including autism, a brain injury or simply ‘I have a condition’. One of the features of the app is that users can log where they have
view the role of community archaeology. The importance of communicating heritage with multiple audiences, and the skills to do this, required me to engage with members of the public in many challenging ways. I will always hold this experience as an influential aspect of my learning, motivating me to include all people in our shared heritage”. As winner of the Youth Category Tom will now go on to represent Northern Ireland for best overall winner at a high profile ceremony in London on the 20th November. Thanks must also go to Historic Environment Division of the Department for Communities, Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund who have supported different community archaeology digs in the Belfast Hills over the last few years, as well as QUB’s Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork and the Ulster Archaeology Society for all their hard work in undertaking the actual fieldwork. used it and give the business a rating so that users can see places that others have had a good experience and then make an informed choice about which business to visit. The app was launched to the public in January of this year and has been well received by service users with many commenting that it has given them the confidence to do things they previously wouldn’t have been comfortable with. Head of Business Development at NOW Group Diane Hill comments, “The JAM Card was initially launched in 2012 and there are over 8000 people using it now. Feedback from users has been great, however many commented that they would like to know that businesses are aware of the JAM Card before they show it. We hope that the launch of the JAM Card Friendly business package will mean that businesses will proudly display that they welcome JAM Card holders and ensure that their staff are providing excellent customer service to all.” Corporate Social Responsibility Opportunity There has been considerable support from businesses since JAM Card was launched, many welcoming the opportunity to improve their level of customer service and prove their commitment to being a responsible business. Pricing starts at just £99 for a small business. This allows the organisation access to the online training course for 10 people, ‘We welcome JAM Card holders’ window stickers and marketing material. CHRISTMAS PUPPIES & Dodgy Doggie Dealers BY PATRICK MCKEE @ ASHWOOD VETS BVetMed, BSc, MRCVS A lovely bouncy puppy can be a wonderful addition to any family. At Christmas time dogs are still popular as pets. But if you are planning to get a puppy at Christmas, here are some things to think about. WATCH OUT FOR THE WORST “PUPPY FARM” SOURCES Make sure that you know where your puppy is coming from, because there are many people who advertise puppies around this time of year who have no care at all for the pup or its health or where it goes as long as they can make a quick bob. In fact
LOOK FOR THE
sometimes we see puppies come in that our good clients have rescued from places where the conditions are very poor. The poor puppies are often covered with many parasites, are thin with poor hair coats and generally ill from lack of love and care.
BEST PUPPY ADVERTISERS
reputable people with a litter of pups will be keen to “vet” any potential customer; they are rightly concerned that their puppy goes to a nice home and not just anyone. If they don’t seem bothered by who you are, that in itself should raise alarm bells!
You should ensure that you have properly looked into the place advertising the puppy, looking for signs that they are reputable, easily contactable, have a proper address you can visit and are willing to allow you to visit and ask questions. In fact, many
To avoid dodgy doggie dealers, watch out for my 5 warning signs! 1. The breeder wants to meet you in a car park or other public area: Any legitimate breeder should allow you to come into their house and see the entire litter and their parents in their home environment. 2. The puppies are kept in poor conditions: Pups should be kept indoors in a clean environment with good ventilation. They should be visually free from dirt marks and there should be no strong ammonia (warm musty urine) smell. 3. The puppies seem dirty,
undersized, or sickly: Dodgy doggie dealers don’t care about the health and welfare of their puppies, just the money they can make from selling them. Such puppies are often smaller and sicker than well looked after puppies of the same age. 4. The breeder is vague on what vaccinations or worming treatment the puppies have been given: Legitimate breeders should be able to back up what they are telling you about vaccines and vet checks with veterinary evidence.
Don’t worry if they haven’t been vaccinated yet, we do that with you anyway once you have the pup. All puppies should have been regularly wormed from two weeks old. 5. The pup looks much younger than you are told: Usually, puppies leave their mother and go to a new home from eight weeks. If a breeder is trying to sell you a puppy that is (or looks) less than eight weeks old, you should think carefully about why.

Titanic Belfast’s Gift of Joy to Families Living with Dementia
TOP TIPS FOR A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS
FESTIVE CHEER : A WINTER WONDERLAND
If you are hosting a family member living with dementia this Christmas, here are a few tips to help you make the day special for everyone:
Local families, including Diane and Margaret Lowry from East Belfast, whose lives have been impacted by Dementia had the chance to enjoy some festive cheer at the exclusive launch of Titanic Belfast’s Magical Christmas Experience.
“
“We are so grateful to Titanic Belfast for inviting our families to be involved in the Magical Christmas Experience. Some of the best Christmas gifts can’t be wrapped, and hosting a Dementia Friendly event so that families can enjoy Christmas together is a present that will not just build new memories for future generations, but will also allow families to remember and reminisce about Christmases gone by. his award recognises individuals or teams developing knowledge, new products, projects, initiatives or services that have demonstrated potential to improve the lives of people affected by dementia. Palmerston developed a Magical Memory Garden with features to help residents with dementia to take an interest in their surroundings and to provoke pleasurable memories. An on-site caravan can help recall family holidays, while a car port offers motoring enthusiasts the opportunity to polish up an old car, and a garden shed houses a Men’s Shed project. iane and Margaret Lowry from East Belfast and their family were invited by the Alzheimer’s Society to the World’s Leading Visitor Attraction to see Father Christmas arrive and launch the Magical Christmas Experience. Aware that Christmas can often be a challenging time for families living with dementia, with heightened emotions and feelings of isolation, the event enabled families to kick off the festive season together. Margaret’s family had the chance to step through the Old Curiosity Shop to enter into the Elves’ Workshop, join Mrs Claus at her cosy kitchen, hear Christmas tales, enjoy festive games, badge making, look up their names in the naughty or nice list and meet Father Christmas. Mingling with a host of well-known Northern Ireland faces from the world of entertainment, the families were first to preview this year’s event. “It really is just magical,” Diane said. “Sometimes it’s hard to

go someone here new with Mum because you wonder how it will be because of the dementia, so to be able to come and know that it will be Dementia Friendly, it’s just very special. There are so many happy families, so much joy. We’ve seen lots of our friends and made lots of new friends tonight too.” Among those attending were Joyce, Renee, and Agnes from Sydenham Court, Clanmil’s East Belfast residence for people living with dementia. The three women enjoyed reminiscing and a visit to Father Christmas to share their Christmas wish list. Titanic Belfast’s Director of Operations, Judith Owens, commented: “Christmas is a truly magical time of year and our Experience is all about embracing festive cheer and creating unique memories. With over 20,000 individuals and families living with Dementia in Northern Ireland and one in three children knowing someone living with Dementia, we
are delighted to be able to support the Alzheimer’s Society to give the gift the joy to its very deserving service users, including Margaret, this festive season.” Bernadine McCrory, Northern Ireland Director at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “With someone developing dementia every three minutes and no cure in sight, the need to unite in the fight against dementia has never been more pressing , so this Christmas Alzheimer’s Society is celebrating the thousands of people who have united against dementia this year by fundraising, campaigning and volunteering for Alzheimer’s Society, and we are pleased to see some of our amazing volunteers with personal experience of dementia in their family here enjoying the magic of Christmas at Titanic Belfast. “ Titanic Belfast’s Magical Christmas Experience runs until 23 December. We know the difference the garden has made to our residents and to people who are visiting from the local community. We see the work that has gone into it has transformed the lives of the
residence. We hope to use this award to help promote the importance of letting people with dementia just enjoy the outdoors, as it is such a vital part of life and we want to help promote that as much as we can.” Dementia devastates lives. By 2021, 1 million people will be living with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society Northern Ireland Dementia Friendly awards 2017 unite communities and individuals across the UK to
recognise, celebrate and promote the inspirational achievements of those making a real difference to people living with dementia. The award for Outstanding Contribution, voted for by people affected by dementia, was won by Lenny White, whose mobile barbering service for men with dementia has proved popular in residential and nursing homes throughout East Belfast.
PUT YOUR DECORATIONS UP EARLY AND SLOWLY Introduce Christmas decorations gradually, over the course of a few days or even a week, so that it doesn’t come as a big change to the person’s usual setting. SPREAD OUT FAMILY VISITS A large number of guests can be noisy and overwhelming, so spread out visits over the festive period. CREATE A QUIET ROOM If things do get busy, designate one room in your house a ‘quiet room’ where one can relax without loud noise and consider scheduling periods of rest throughout the day. KEEP THE ROUTINE Try to keep meals at the same time and in familiar surroundings so your loved one can relax. Be mindful of food, although people tend to over indulge during the festive season, a full plate can be quite daunting so try not to overload your loved one’s plate. PLAY FAMILIAR XMAS MUSIC Or reminisce over old photos. This can help your loved one relax and will add a nice touch to the festivities. For more advice on making Christmas Dementia Friendly, call the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 1122 Lenny received the award to rapturous applause, but said it was completely unexpected. He was presented with the trophy by last year’s winner Danny Brown, a familiar face from the ‘Still Me’ television advertisements that raise awareness of dementia. Lenny’s mobile barber shop offers traditional wet shaves with hot towels, as well as favourite colognes. His jukebox plays hits from days gone by, and traditional barbershop photos and signage encourage reminiscence. He even has a rotating barber pole. An East Belfast project Linking Generations Northern Ireland that has brought young people from Gilnahirk Primary, Tullycarnet Youth Group and Our Lady and St Patrick’s College together with Kirk House Care Home was a finalist in two categories, and while they were pipped to the prize by Dementia Friendly Holywood in both, they were delighted to attend and to take home finalist trophies.
SOME OF THE BEST GIFTS CAN’T BE WRAPPED If you’ve got time on your hands, why not volunteer with Alzheimer’s Society’s new Side by Side service that helps people with dementia keep doing the things they love. Our website www.alzheimers.org.uk has all the info on how you can get involved to unite against dementia.

IKEA’S SAGOSKATT TOY RANGE BACK ON SHELVES FOR CHRISTMAS EAST BELFAST: IKEA Belfast will also donate toys to East Belfast Mission’s Bright Sparks Project by asking customers to buy a toy and donate it in store
N
ow in its third year, IKEA has launched a range of soft toys designed by children for children. The full purchase price from the sale of each toy will go to Save the Children UK, to support children to fulfil their potential through
education and play. The collection, SAGOSKATT, has been designed by children from across the world who were asked to let their imaginations run wild and create their very own fantastic creatures as part of the Soft Toys Drawing Competition.
Save the Children supports children living in poverty across the UK, aiming to give all children the best possible start in life, regardless of background. From boosting parents’ skills and confidence to support their child’s learning at home, to bringing local community organisations together to identify and resolve issues that affect children the most, Save the Children UK supports children wherever they need it. Locally, IKEA Belfast will also be donating toys to East Belfast Mission’s (EBM) Bright Sparks Project. The local charity provides a safe environment in the city, where children can play, be happy and healthy. Shoppers can donate to the store’s local cause by having the opportunity to “Give Twice” by picking up an extra toy or book at checkouts and place it in the donation bank for EBM, whilst donating again to Save the Children UK. Christie Gregg, store manager at IKEA Belfast said; “All of our toys and books encourage play, and our new family of soft toys show the power of play in its purest form; what children’s imaginations can create when encouraged, and we’re delighted they will help other children around the world develop their right to play.” Hege Sæbjørnsen, Country Sustainability Manager IKEA said: “At IKEA, we believe that play is
essential to every child’s wellbeing and happiness but know that there are many children in the UK who are deprived of their right to play. The SAGOSKATT range showcases our commitment to defending this right as it not only celebrates children’s creativity, but it is also helping children in some of the poorest communities in the UK to learn, develop and most importantly play.” Tom Rahilly, Director of UK Programmes at Save the Children UK said: “We are so grateful for IKEA’s support from the sales of their SAGOSKATT range. The money raised from this fantastic campaign will help us give children all over the UK the best possible start in life and help them to fulfil their potential through education and play.” This year IKEA selected ten lucky winners from over 70,000 entries to be given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of having their drawing recreated as part of a limited-edition range sold in stores worldwide and online, with prices starting at £1. From a monster to a mythical hippo and crocodile hybrid, the drawings are expertly transformed into near-identical versions of the youngsters’ creations to bring the exact imagination of the child to life. LOOKING BACK: With Aidan Campbell
The earliest mention in East Belfast of Woodstock comes in the 1852 Belfast & Ulster Street Directory which records the resident of Woodstock Place as ‘Hugh McKibben, gentleman and three houses vacant’. Woodstock Street appears in 1868 and the modern Woodstock Road is fully built up by 1877. In 1892 Cregagh Road is not listed as a thoroughfare although several residents are recorded as living in a ‘new street off Cregagh Road’ and also at Cregagh Road. ‘T .Wilson, poor rate collector’ is mentioned as living at Cregagh House which still exists as the Church of Ireland Ministry of Healing at 162 Upper Knockbreda Road. The housing development at Thiepval and Hamel Drive was built for ex-servicemen returning from the First World War and the Cregagh housing estate was mostly constructed in the late 1940s. In recent times the Woodstock/Cregagh Road has been a great shopping area although retailing has shifted towards multiple retail chains and large shopping centres but many independent family owned shops continue to thrive. But what about some retail premises in the area that older readers may recall? Samuel Brown’s grocery, bakery, fruit and vegetable premises at 227-229 Woodstock Road (here in 1931) was located not far from Willowfield Unionist Club and lasted from the 1890s until the 1940s. There was a stable behind the shop and also a piggery which supplied bacon and ham. Samuel was quite adept at marketing activity and customers were drawn to the electrically-operated model (look closely in the window to the left) of a baker which would tap the window to attract shoppers’ attention.

William and Sheila Rutledge stand outside their confectionery and tobacconist shop at 367 Woodstock Road with daughters Daphne and Lucinda. It is 1951, the year of the Festival of Britain exhibition which is being advertised in the shop window. The shop was located on the corner of Killowen Street which is the very next street to Ogilvie Street when heading to Belfast. William had been blinded during military service at the end of World War 2 and was trained in retailing by St. Dunstan’s now known as Blind Veterans UK. He was ably assisted in the shop by his family. A 1950s view of the ‘Hamel Stores’ at Hamel Drive. The store was operated by Mr. and Mrs. Cuthbert for many years before Gilbert Wilson took over the business in 1950. Cregagh Post Office had been based in Everton Drive since the early 1900s and was re-located to Hamel Stores in 1989. Notice the ‘Senior Service’ cigarette vending machine on the wall to the right. ‘Dettol’ @ 1s & 4d and ‘Parazone’ @ 1s seem very good value according to the advertisements.
A late 1930s view of the Cregagh Road at ‘Bell’s Bridge’ (before the roundabout and Ladas Drive were built) and showing a McCreary ‘streamliner’ tram at the end-of-lines. The tram line above Bell’s Bridge was abandoned in 1936 because of the poor surface. Passengers took a bus to the top of the road. The boundary between the Belfast and Castlereagh Council areas was also reached here. Note the cyclist to the far right with the large basket on his bicycle (which may well be a make called ‘Pashley’. ) Delivery by bicycle was a common sight on Belfast streets years ago. Only a single car is parked on the road.

The Red Rooster restaurant was a familiar sight at 78-80 Cregagh Road for many years and this is how it looked in 1986. The site, immediately opposite Harding Memorial School, is now occupied by an Iceland supermarket. The thoroughfare alongside is Gibson Park Avenue which leads to Malone Rugby Club. Gibson Park Avenue was originally known as ‘Daddy Winker’s Lane’ before assuming its present name in the 1920s when it was named after a Unionist politician. But who was ‘Daddy Winker?’ The Hillfoot Road (replaced by the A55 dual carriageway in the early 1960s) leads off to the right in this 1910 view. Horse drawn trams reached this area then known as ‘Cregagh Village’ in the late 1890s and the tramway system was electrified in 1905. This picture was taken at the Cregagh tram terminus, looking in the direction of Belfast. Electric trams were open-topped initially and then fitted with top covers for protection in wet weather. But it was decided that these trams should have open cabs because it was believed this was healthier for the drivers!

The annual creative arts competition, which attracted over 2000 entries this year, has always been a significant focal point for Anti-Bullying Week (13-17 Nov 2017). This year’s theme of “All Equal, All Different, All Together” aims to support schools and youth organisations to celebrate difference and diversity across Northern Ireland; bring children and young people together to celebrate what makes them and others unique; and help create welcoming, respectful, kind and inclusive environments both off and online for children and young people.

Speaking at the awards event, Rosanna Jack, Regional Anti-Bullying Coordinator, Northern Ireland AntiBullying Forum (NIABF), said: “AntiBullying Week is an opportunity for children and young people across Northern Ireland to talk about the complexities of bullying behaviour with teachers and youth leaders, parents, carers and amongst each other. unique exhibition celebrating 35 years of integrated education in NI has been launched at an event in the Ulster Museum. Entitled ‘The Big Small Stories Exhibition’ and hosted by The NI Council for Integrated Education (NICIE), the two-day event features displays, stories and performances from the 65 Integrated schools. It demonstrates a strong commitment to anti-bullying practice across Northern Ireland and in particular showcases the inspiring work that young people are doing, with the support of schools and youth groups, to promote welcoming, respectful, accepting and kind environments for all. “The quality of this year’s work Heritage Lottery Fund Northern Ireland (HLF NI), engagement with the Integrated schools as well as the founders and supporters of integrated education, ‘The Big Small Stories’ project aims to capture, record and archive the memories and experiences of the people behind the foundation and development of integrated schools across NI. Through oral history interviews and the collection of images and other heritage material, the overarching project brings together teachers, pupils, parents, principals, governors and the whole school community as they embark on an exciting journey to explore the full history of integrated education. The next stage will be working with schools in the production of an educational app about the history and legacy of integrated education. A number of oral history interviews with founding parents and principals of integrated schools, as well as former pupils, teachers, and other staff will be conducted to leave a vivid record of the memories and experiences of the ordinary people behind the foundation and development of integrated education. It is vitally important to see and hear the voice of the child within anti-bullying work. This year many of the messages from our young people aimed to support and empower other young people which is inspiring and positive for AntiBullying Week 2017.” Translink has been an active supporter of Anti-Bullying Week for the past 9 years and helps to reinforce messages by placing anti-bullying poster displays at train and bus stations across Northern Ireland. Congratulating all of the award recipients, Ursula Henderson, Translink PR Manager, said: “Young people across Northern Ireland have shown great awareness of this serious issue and tackled it in expressive and effective ways. They’ve come together with a powerful united voice to say bullying behaviours should not be tolerated in any form and that everyone should be treated with respect. Translink’s pleased to be able to spread this important message across the bus and rail network.”
Strathearn School Welcomes Lord Mayor of Belfast
The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Belfast, Nuala McAllister, visited the School in November. THE LORD MAYOR participated in a question and answer session with sixth form politics students. Topics as diverse as what makes Belfast a welcoming and inclusive city, how to break the current deadlock at Stormont and what it’s like being a young woman in politics made for a lively discussion. Pupils enjoyed the chance to speak directly to an elected representative and the Lord Mayor responded thoughtfully to the issues that the pupils raised, making this a valuable visit for all concerned. ockport School Golf Academy is the first of its kind in Ireland to give pupils the unique opportunity to combine academic studies with dedicated timetabled time to practice their golf.
It offers an outstanding opportunity for aspiring young champions and goes beyond simply playing as members are taught golf etiquette, rules, course management, greenkeeping and caddying. As part of the Academy all children from the age of three play golf as a timetabled PE sport. This Junior Golf Award is testament to the commitment the Academy makes to nurturing talent from a young age. Max, pictured here with Mr McIlveen Head of Boys’ PE and Debbie Hanna, PGA Professional at Blackwood Golf Club, was identified as a growing

It is a time for families to come together to create decorations or bake cakes for comfort and sustenance through the long nights of winter.” The school places a special emphasis on the seasons of the talent and the Academy will give him the opportunity to grow in the game and realise his full potential as he moves through the development stages of the Academy. Children and their carers can come and work around the bonfire to create their own advent craft to take home as a gift or for themselves. This in addition to the other amazing crafts on offer. Admission to the event is free, and everyone is welcome.

“As a parent it’s thrilling when your child gets so much enjoyment from any activity they do. But as Max shows so much enthusiasm for golf, and appears to be showing good ability for his age, we knew Rockport was the natural school choice in order to help nurture and develop his talent. Rockport have been instrumental in allowing Max to fully enjoy his golf, whilst also giving him the platform and resources to consistently improve his game. ARE YOU INTIMIDATED IN THE GYM? FITNESS : BY STEFANIE
Do you feel intimidated, nervous, scared or self conscious in the gym?
W
ell let me tell you something you are not alone. You are not the first person to feel this way nor will you be the last. But what I can tell you is that this is normal, you are human and you are throwing yourself into a whole new experience and way of life and trust me that is scary. But the sooner you can make that first move the better, as the longer you put something off the harder it is going to be to overcome. Lets face it what is there to be intimidated by? If you think about it logically everyone is there to battle their own demons, everyone is there to better themselves, to get fitter, to be a healthier person, to get stronger, leaner or whatever their goal is. You have two choices here: be scared and let that fear intimidate you and stop you moving forward? or overcome that fear, get down to

HOW TO DIET OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD? My short answer is don’t!
the gym, kick that session in the butt and start to feel as amazing as you deserve because you are worth it and never let anyone or anything make you feel otherwise. SO HERE ARE MY TOP TIPS! 1. No one is judging you. 2. No one is interested in what you are doing. 3. Hire a Personal Trainer until you learn the ropes. 4. If you feel self conscious why not bring a friend with you. 5. No one is staring at you, and if they do why not say “Hi”, you never know who you will meet! 6. Most people are probably doing things incorrectly, so don’t feel embarrassed.
F
ar too many people worry about ruining their progress or “gains” over the festive period but unless you are going food mad and binging everyday which i’m sure you wont as we are all moderation eaters by now… aren’t we? Then try not to let it ruin your festive spirits. Everyone wants to eat, drink and be merry without putting on a pound. But lets face it a few nights out is not going to break the bank, yes you may hold a little more water and yes you may feel full and bloated but thats just the extra food doing its job. A few days off will only take a few days in the gym to burn off and you will magically be back to normal. My point being the festive period is about celebrating with friends and family its not about obsessing over macros and training schedules. Do eat, drink and be merry but just be wary that you don’t have to do it all day everyday. Focus on eating “right” when you can, but don’t let it ruin your festivities. You are human!

The clinical trial is vital in proving the efficacy and outcomes and therefore the future of Moment Health as we tackle maternal mental health in the UK and Northern Ireland with a view to going global.” Not all innovation vouchers lead to clinical trials but the combination of the product, data and drive of the entrepreneur behind Moment Health led researchers at the university to realise that there is no question of the potential of the app. The Invest NI Innovation Voucher enabled the company to incorporate novel ways of capturing people’s mood using the app, and Ulster University’s UX-Lab also provided expertise on the app’s usability. Dr Anne Moorhead and Dr Raymond Bond and others in Ulster examined how mental health and wellbeing can be measured and supported using digital technology, and early results indicate exciting new opportunities using data analytics, as part of Ulster’s Cognitive Analytics Research Lab (CARL). The impact of this work has great potential to expand beyond the initial Innovation Voucher and is fully in line with Ulster’s Research and Impact Strategy.” Available now to download, in its first week the Moment Health app has already ranked as the number one health and fitness app in the UK. Available to download now from the Apple Store and Google Play. Technology company Moment Health exists to prioritise Maternal Mental Health and make it mainstream. Developed with clinicians and healthcare professionals, the Moment Health app screens for perinatal, postnatal and associated anxieties. Soft Contrasting Roots This colour is a mix of soft brown roots , matched with dark brows. This intentional contrast is both effective and convenient, as it will allows the blood to stand out more your hair to grows out with less maintenance. Beige Blonde This hair colour is also low maintenance is a much more natural and softer colour of blonde. There’s little variation in this soft, light shade of blonde, which is what makes it so special, This type of blonde suit most skin tones . Face Framing Highlights This is my favourite look, its effective and can be mixed up with different
contrasting colours. This look is edgy without being over-the-top. Natural Rich Brunette This shade of brown is a rich warmth tone without crossing over into reddish territory, making it super-flattering on all different types of skin undertones, and perfect to match roots smudge effect and also for a complete change this time of year ! Toasty Blonde This shade of blonde is a perfect balance of colour. It’s a rich colour with added warmth without being brassy, and a light shade so doesn’t wash out your skin, the tones create dimension to the hair so hair doesn’t looked over highlighted .

“
As a community-focused organisation, we are delighted to be partnering with the MAC once again and sponsoring its Christmas show, Hansel and Gretel. One of the exciting Belfast based projects is Golden Thread Gallery’s A Little of What You Fancy, a multidisciplinary arts project for older people delivered through a series of visual arts, words and music workshops with a professional musician and visual artist. The output of the project will be showcased at the Golden Thread Gallery in a visual arts exhibition and also at the Oh Yeah Centre with a music and arts events. Another project, Play Resource Warehouse, in North Belfast, will work with Translink and Ulster Folk and Transport Museum with groups of older people and carers to create a collection of artworks based around the idea of memories and days out which will be exhibited in Play Resource. Queen’s Film Theatre will work with people with dementia and their carers aswell as older men from Men’s Sheds to create artworks inspired by films they will watch. QFT hope to work with over 500 older people in total across Belfast, Ballymena, Carnmoney, Newtownards and Scrabo. The Arts and Older People’s programme was set up to increase opportunities for older people to actively engage in the arts and explore the social issues affecting them, such as poverty, isolation and loneliness, as well as promoting wellbeing.

loneliness and isolation. The Arts and Older People’s Programme was established by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in 2010 and is now a cross-governmental partnership with funding from the Public Health Agency and The Baring Foundation. To date the programme has provided £1.8m funding to community organisations and voluntary groups across Northern Ireland in the delivery of 137 arts projects to older people. The programme has been designed to challenge perceptions of what it means to be an older person. Lorraine Calderwood, Community Development Officer at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, explained how the Arts and Older People’s Programme is making a difference to the lives of older people across the region, “Research has proven that engagement with the arts can raise self-esteem, confidence and motivation, as well as aid in relieving stress, worries and also pain. The Arts and Older People’s Programme is committed to providing meaningful opportunities for our older people to take part in arts activities, enriching their lives for the better. The arts have a vital role to play in helping older people find their voice and express the issues which can often affect them on a day-to-day basis, thus promoting positive physical and mental health.”

Speaking on their Phoenix Sweetie Shop, Geri Wright, Communications Manager at Phoenix Natural Gas said: “As a community-focused organisation, we are delighted to be partnering with the MAC once again and sponsoring its Christmas show, Hansel and Gretel. Our Phoenix Sweetie Shop is free for families to step inside and explore; and we are encouraging everyone visiting to nominate a sweetie in their life that deserves to be rewarded. This could be anyone from your teacher, lollipop warden, sports coach, mum and dad; to grandparents, siblings or even your favourite pet. From
all the entries received we will choose one worthy person (or pet) to receive a much-deserved special treat in the new year. Last year, we called for Christmas wishes and were overwhelmed by the number of heartfelt wishes and stories received. As a result, we were able to donate £1,500 to The Welcome Organisation, as the biggest wish from the little visitors was to end homelessness. Whilst Christmas is the season for giving, I have no doubt we will receive a plethora of nominations that demonstrates the breadth of kindness and goodwill present all year round.” The MAC’s Christmas show Hansel & Gretel, which is sponsored by Phoenix Natural Gas, opened on Tuesday 28 November. Performed with enchanting staging, a local cast and an original acoustic score, the MAC’s own production of Hansel & Gretel will take audiences on a fun adventure where they will discover why friendship, laughter and family are essential for the perfect Christmas. The Phoenix Sweetie Shop will remain in place on the ground floor of the MAC throughout Christmas until 7th January 2018 and is completely free to visit. BIG HOUSES By local historian Aidan Campbell
Of East Belfast CONNSBROOK HOUSE This old image is not a photograph but an oil painting by Hugh Frazer (1795–1865). He was a landscape artist best known for his views of Belfast and County Down and completed this painting of ‘Connsbrook House’ (demolished) in 1813 when there was little building development in the area. Located at the Holywood Road end of what is now Connsbrook Avenue the stretch of water in the background is the estuary of the Connswater River and the small town in the distance is Belfast.
BELMONT HOUSE Belmont is a well-known suburb in East Belfast which takes its name from a large demesne and estate. The name of Belmont may well derive from Portia’s house in ‘The Merchant of Venice’. ‘Belmont House’ (demolished) was bought by Thomas McClure who purchased the surrounding townlands of Strandtown and Ballymaghan in 1858 from the Ranfurley family of Dungannon (whose name survives locally at Ranfurley Drive) and a few years later bought Ballycloghan townland including Belmont
There was a time when there were not many houses in East Belfast. The entire townland of Ballymacarrett was bought for £300.00 in 1672 by Thomas Pottinger from the Earl of Clanbrassil and there were only two houses on the road (now the Newtownards Road) from Bridge End to the Connswater River. The townland was sold to Baron Yelverton in 1779 for £18,113 to build houses at Ballymacarrett as a rival to Belfast across the River Lagan. In 1787 it was bought by Marquis of
house and lands from Lord Bangor. In 1890 he sold Belmont to the trustees of linen merchant Henry James Campbell (no relation) who had lived in retirement at another grand house called ‘Lorne’ in Craigavad (now the headquarters of the Ulster Girl Guides) to build one of the great schools of Belfast, Campbell College which opened in 1894. HENRYVILLE HOUSE Not far from the old Boyd Endowment School at Lagan Village, this was how ‘Henryville House’ (demolished) looked in 1897 when it was the residence of builder and contractor William Kerr. Look at the elaborate porch, minarets and of course a sign of wealth is the horse and carriage at the front door. It is interesting how the address changed as Belfast expanded. In 1860 it was described as being located at Lagan Village,
Donegall for £25,000 and inherited by his son Lord Spencer Chichester (later Baron Templemore) in 1837 and was in family ownership until 1906. Big Houses (mostly demolished by 2017) were built from the wealth generated largely from businesses based in Belfast. Wealthy business owners had their businesses in Belfast and they lived in Belfast. But what of some of the big houses that were in existence in the 1830s when the first Ordnance Survey Map was published?
Ballymacarrett which by 1880 had become Lagan Village Road, Mountpottinger and by 1900 was Woodstock Place, off Woodstock Road, Belfast. William Kerr is associated with Henryville until, in the 1910 Belfast Street Directory, it is listed as vacant and is not mentioned thereafter. BALLYMACARRETT HOUSE ‘Ballymacarrett House’ was located not far from St Matthew’s R.C. Church at Bryson Street, Newtownards Road. In the 1850s the resident was Joseph Patton, gentleman but by the late 1860s was owned by wealthy coal merchant Alexander King who was a large land owner at Ballymacarrett and owned the site on Templemore Avenue where Glentoran once played in the 1880s before they became based at the Oval. Some wealthy coal merchants lived in East Belfast and probably the best-known name is that of Sir
Samuel Kelly who was born in the family home at Castlereagh Street. The coal depot of Alexander King was nearby at Scrabo Street, Queen’s Quay which is close to the Odyssey entertainment complex. STRANDTOWN HOUSE This is how Gelston’s Corner on Holywood Road looked in 1930 with a view along the Holywood Road looking towards Belfast on the left and Pim’s Avenue on the right. The Belfast Street Directory records that Mrs. Gelston is listed in this vicinity as a ‘grocer and spirit dealer’ in the 1860s. The small castellated building to the right is the gatelodge of ‘Strandtown House’, home of James Alexander Morrison Heyn well-known for being owner of the Ulster Steamship Company also known as the ‘Head Line’. The house was demolished in the 1930s to be replaced by the Strand cinema.
AIDAN CAMPBELL has previously published 13 East Belfast local history books entitled: Beaconsfield, Knock, Cherryvalley, Gilnahirk, Castlereagh, Cregagh, Stormont, Sydenham, Belmont, East Belfast Revisited Volumes 1 & 2, Ballymacarrett and Castlereagh Updated.
