GRAND OPENING
The magic of CS Lewis officially received a permanent place in East Belfast as some of the most famous creations of the world-famous author are celebrated at the landmark opening of The CS Lewis Square. The square, at the intersection of the Connswater and Comber greenways, will be one of Northern Ireland’s most exciting public spaces.

9km linear park through East Belfast. Other project highlights include the Sam Thompson Bridge at Victoria Park, Marsh-wiggle Way at Clarawood and ‘The Hollow’ off Beersbridge Road. Irish artist Maurice Harron created the sculptures, which depict Aslan, Maugrim, Mr and Mrs Beaver, the Robin, the White Witch, the Stone Table and Mr Tumnus. It is the not the first time CS Lewis has been celebrated in sculpture in his home of East Belfast; another local artist, Ross Wilson, created The Searcher, based on character Digory Kirke from The Magician’s Nephew, which stands near Holywood Arches Library. 300 trees have been planted around the square on drumlin features and the new square is lit for evening events and activities. There are also new railway tracks, arches, street furniture, paths and façade art. The Connswater Community Greenway is a £40m project developed by EastSide Partnership and delivered by Belfast City Council, which is managing the project construction. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, Belfast City Council, the Department for Communities and the Department for Infrastructure, the Greenway will have a really positive impact on the quality of life for local people and create a legacy for future generations. The launch was compered by East Belfast actor Dan Gordon. The
centrepiece was the unveiling of the seven new sculptures. To mark this, local people were involved in making seven short films, to bring the seven sculptures to life: These included dance group Ajendance performing the Dance of the White Witch, filmed under the H&W cranes; flute players performing the Waterboys’ Further Up Further In, filmed at the waterfall at Cregagh Glen – Mike Scott of the band is a fan of CS Lewis; and more.

I am delighted to be back in Belfast again, particularly to celebrate the opening of C.S. Lewis Square. The last time I was here was back in 1998 when another now famous Belfast man, Keith Getty, and I put together a show to celebrate my stepfather’s centenary! This is a wonderful city, and it’s a thrill that Jack (as he preferred to be called) is being honoured in this way. The Sculptures are terrific I am sure that this square will be a great boost to Belfast, his childhood home which he so dearly loved.

YEARS OF CARE
Abbeyfield Housing Association celebrated its 60th anniversary recently by hosting a special event at Belfast City Hall to thank all of the charity’s volunteers for the exceptional contribution they make to residents’ lives. Abbeyfield Belfast Society operates seven supported sheltered houses in South and East Belfast. Abbeyfield & Wesley Housing Association manages 19 supported, sheltered houses. In addition the charity also runs a residential and dementia care home in East Belfast and three sheltered schemes in Carrickfergus, Newtownabbey and Belfast.

Anniversary
ABBEYFIELD CELEBRATES LOCAL VOLUNTEERS AT 60TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT uest speakers at the event included Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Brian Kingston, and Baroness Brenda Dean, Abbeyfield’s President**. Congratulating volunteers for the invaluable role they play, Baroness Brenda Dean said “Abbeyfield plays an important role in local society by providing a range of high quality accommodation and services to older people throughout Northern Ireland, from purpose built apartments, right through to sheltered bungalows and flats, supported sheltered houses and residential care. The charity’s central ethos is that older people should be enabled to retain links within the local community. Our volunteers are a critical part of this process. Their interactions with residents help to overcome loneliness and isolation and they can make a huge difference to an older person’s wellbeing. On behalf of our residents and management I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to them.” Sally Campton, Volunteer Co-ordinator, Abbeyfield in Northern Ireland
G
discussed: “Abbeyfield was founded on voluntary action and sixty years on, local volunteers continue to make a difference in the lives of our residents. From enjoying a chat and a cuppa to help with getting on-line, from pitting their wits over a game of Scrabble to embarking on an abseiling fundraiser challenge, from green fingered gardening to music making, the skills shared and time given by our wonderfully committed and caring volunteers are part of our unique Abbeyfield identity.” Thanking the volunteers for their commitment and dedication Professor Bob Stout, Abbeyfield Northern Ireland Chairman commented: “Abbeyfield was founded on the principle that older people have an important place in the community. The original guiding principles, that older people are an important part of the community and that loneliness must be alleviated, are just as relevant today as they were 60 years ago. Our dedicated volunteers give of their time, in a range of different ways, to make sure residents can take part in activities and feel
connected to their local community. In addition some are involved in the administration side of things, others are board members and a number contribute to producing a newsletter for residents and volunteers. There are so many different ways people can contribute and each and every way is appreciated. It is important to publicly acknowledge and thank volunteers for the contribution they make during the charity’s 60th anniversary celebrations.” A number of special events and initiatives are being organised to celebrate Abbeyfield’s 60th anniversary. The charity recently coordinated a ‘Young Poet’s’ competition whereby local budding young poets, aged between 8 and 18 years old, were asked to write a poem about older people. Local songwriter and performer Duke Special judged the competition entries and read out the overall winning poem by Cathal Brolly (16) at a special 60th anniversary. Cathal is a pupil at Jordanstown School for children with hearing and visual impairment.

Autism Support
IN BRIEF LOVE XMAS?
Funding Boost For Local Autism Support Group AN AUTISM SUPPORT GROUP IN EAST BELFAST HAS RECEIVED FUNDING FROM THE HOUSING EXECUTIVE TO HELP ESTABLISH AN AUTISM RESOURCE CENTRE FOR CHILDREN AFFECTED BY THE DISABILITY. elping Hands, based in Ballybeen and Tullycarnet, received £10,000 from the housing authority’s Social Housing Enterprise Awards scheme to train staff and volunteers who will be working at the new centre. The charity has also been successful in securing separate funding to regenerate and refurbish the existing Millar’s Day Care Centre in Dundonald which has been derelict and unused for a number of years. Welcoming the social enterprise award, Caroline Birch from the Helping Hands Autism Support Group, said: “The proposal is to transform this derelict facility into an Autism Resource Centre which
H
will create a hub for young people and families who face the daily challenges from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as providing an outlet for local community activity and eventually develop a social economy business. To ensure that the organisation is suitably equipped to deliver the project, we need to build capacity of management committee, staff and volunteers in terms of managing this process and the facility on an ongoing basis. The Housing Executive funding means we can train our volunteers in how to apply for funding and manage finances which is essential in building a sustainable social enterprise.” Paul Carland, Social Enterprise

ON THE MAP
SILVER AWARD FOR ‘RADAR’ AT CIPR PRIDE AWARDS Risk Avoidance Danger Awareness Resource and Morrow Communications recognised for the communications campaign designed to ‘put RADAR on the map’
orthern Ireland’s first and only, life-sized interactive safety and life skills education centre based in Belfast was recently awarded, in partnership with Morrow Communications, a prestigious silver award at the CIPR (Chartered Institute of Public Relations) PRide Awards held at the Culloden Estate Hotel. Having beat off competition from a number of strong finalists, the award in the Education Communications Campaign recognises the strategic campaign, titled ‘Putting RADAR on the Map’, designed to raise awareness of the £1.8 million facility since the initial planning stages to the official opening earlier this year, and beyond. From promoting the expertise of the RADAR team and generating sponsorship opportunities, to raising awareness amongst key education audiences and stakeholders – the approach to communications around the centre has resulted in press coverage across the media, and helped to communicate RADAR’s contribution to saving lives and money. Claire Bonner, Director at Morrow Communications, said: “We entered RADAR into the CIPR PRide Awards as we recognised that in helping to raise awareness of the centre through the media, our campaign also had a greater impact in communicating important safety messages to the public. From creative photography to engagement with awareness days, the RADAR team are experts who are not only great to work alongside, but are also at the forefront of their industry in delivering tailored educational programmes to young people across Northern Ireland.” RADAR Manager, Sandra Leo, added: “RADAR has already welcomed over 7,500 young people through the door since opening at the start of this year, which highlights the efficiency of our campaign so far in raising awareness of the centre – an important resource which allows visitors to explore dangerous situations in a risk-free environment. We see this award as another important milestone in promoting the facility, which ‘must be seen to be believed’.”
Give a Little TIME, Make a BIG Difference This Christmas
PICTURED L-R Lorraine Smyth Community Engagement Officer (Volunteer Now), Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Brian Kingston and Wendy Osborne OBE Chief Executive (Volunteer Now).
WITH CHRISTMAS APPROACHING VOLUNTEER NOW IS ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO ADD VOLUNTEERING TO THEIR ‘TO DO’ LIST. Their ChristmasTIME campaign aims to encourage more people to get involved in a one-off or short volunteering opportunity as part of their festive celebrations. Wendy Osborne OBE, Chief Executive, Volunteer Now explains, “Many charities and community organisations need extra help around Christmas with their festive volunteering opportunities – from Santa Helpers at a grotto or fair, to carol singing, to raise funds, wrapping presents or food collections for Christmas hampers. By giving as little as an hour of your time to volunteer for
one of these roles you can make a big difference to an organisation, a cause, or a family in need. The added bonus is that it’s fun and you come away feeling good too. It’s win-win for everyone!” The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Brian Kingston was in the Festive Spirit when he helped to launch the campaign at Volunteer Now and added: “I would encourage everyone to give their support. Thinking of others, and doing something practical to help, is
especially poignant at this time of the year – what better Christmas gift could you give.” To have a look at festive volunteer opportunities available near you, go to www.volunteernow.co.uk and select ‘ChristmasTIME’ from the volunteer search activity list. Volunteer Now social media accounts (Facebook & Twitter) will also have a series of postings of opportunities for #ChristmasTIME.
1. Agree a game plan to stop overspending: do a ‘secret Santa’? Agree on a set amount each? A ‘just for the kids’ rule? A ‘from charity shops only’ rule? 2. If children have their heart set on something out of your price range, club together with relatives. 3. Short of a new Christmas outfit? Get together with mates for a swapping party and you’ll go home with something new, without the cost. 4. If you’re doing the meal, ask guests to each contribute something: drinks? pudding? cheese? cake? a turkey?! If you’re spending time cooking a Christmas feast, you are already giving a lot. 5. Aim to only buy the food you will actually eat and decide what you will do with left-overs 6. Home-made goodies always go down well all are cheap to make and, wrapped with cellophane and ribbon, make great presents. 7. Your time and thoughtfulness are every bit as valuable as your money. Instead of presents, offer vouchers for gardening, washing the car, a few hours cleaning etc 8. So many people live alone – a cheery visit from you is worth more than any present. 9. Spend time focusing on what you can enjoy at no cost and make Christmas really special: watching your kids in the school nativity; watching the lights get switched on; enjoying Christmas carols in church; playing games. 10. Never take out credit or be tempted by a Christmas loan – you don’t know what the New Year will bring. Your income may change and it could affect your whole family’s security. No Christmas is worth that. If you have problem debts, give yourself the gift of peace of mind: visit www.capdebthelp.org or call 0800 328 0006

BELFAST HSC TRUST APPEALS FOR MORE FOSTER CARERS
CHANGES TO INCOME SUPPORT FOR LONE PARENTS ASK THE ADVISER
“We need more foster carers in your area” is the message this December from the Belfast Health and Social Care (HSC) Fostering Service as they appeal for more fostering families.
H
aving a wide pool of foster carers enables children and young people to live with safe and secure fostering families within their own area, close to their family, friends and school. Foster carers come from all walks of life and may be married, single or have a partner. You can apply to foster regardless of race, religion, language, culture, gender, disability, age and sexual orientation. You may own or rent your home, work or claim benefits, and may or may not have children of your own. HSC foster carers receive financial allowances, 24 hour social work support and on-going training. Professional HSC
Carlie Martin, Better Off Families Adviser at East Belfast Independent Advice Centre provides information about common advice queries.

foster carers receive an additional fee*. Beverley Ringland, Senior Social Worker, advises: “There are members of the public who have the skills and capacity to become foster carers and make a real difference to the life of a young person. We know that people consider fostering but rule themselves out based on myths and misbeliefs - we appeal to anyone with an interest to find out more information before ruling yourself out”. Eighteen year old Shannon Massey who has lived with foster carers for almost two years credits her foster carers with giving her the practical support and encouragement to pursue her ambitions:
“My dream is to keep studying Hospitality and maybe someday to have a management role in a hotel. My advice to someone considering becoming a foster carer would be that you’re going to be helping a kid who probably really needs it. You could be the most positive influence they ever have.” Members of the public who feel they have the time and space in their lives to foster for their local Trust are urged to find out more. Orangefield Remembered
A SCHOOL IN BELFAST
This book describes the fortunes of an East Belfast secondary intermediate school which opened in September 1957 in Cameronian Drive, Castlereagh, on land which had been part of the Blackiston Houston estate.
T
his commerative volume comprises memoirs of past pupils and former members of staff as well as photographs of sport, drama, music, art, journalism, outdoor pursuits and after-school activities. Pupil and teacher memoirs pay tribute to John Malone, Orangefield’s first headmaster, a pioneering educationist who set out to create a learning experience which would challenge many of the orthodoxies of schooling in the 1950s. He valued the local community as an educational resource and believed that learning should not be confined to the classroom alone. These values reflected his belief in the worth of each and every boy - failure was not an acceptable term in his educational thinking. When John Malone left in 1972, the values he established were
further developed and strengthened by his successor, Brian Weston, and then by Ken Stanley.Links were established in 1957 with major local industries through the school House system. The Loop Bridge Weaving Company, Davidson & Co.Ltd (Sirocco Works), Hughes Tool Co. Ltd, Musgrave& Co,Ltd, provided support for a wide range of curricular and recreational activities. Further links were later established with The McNeill Group, Hugh J Scott Ltd, Stewarts Supermarkets, and Howden-Sirocco. John Malone also saw the potential for introducing urban students to the rural delights of Mourne mountain, plain and seascape. In 1965, he negotiated the purchase of the school’s Field Centre, Whinlands, based in Annalong. This was the first

Field Centre of its kind to be established in Mourne country and provided a wide range of cultural and recreational activities for pupils of all ages and abilities. Indeed Orangefield boys were the first to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Bearing in mind the contribution Orange field Boys School made to education in East Belfast and beyond, a small group of former teachers felt that the name and work of the school should be kept alive in the form of a book. Orangefield Remembered captures the human endeavour and spirit of the school in its time and place over three turbulent decades. much to provide a secure environment for pupils and to reassure worried parents. It was surely a fitting tribute to the Headmaster and Staff that the Department of Education Inspectors found the attendance rates to be ‘ remarkably high’ and commended the school’s service to the local community. Orangefield Remembered was launched at Malone Rugby Club last month by Dame Mary Peters, CH, DBE. and is now available from the following outlets: Warrens Newsagent, 120, Orby Drive. “I am getting Income Support as a lone parent, but I have heard that I will no longer be entitled as my youngest child is five years old. I thought you could claim Income Support up until the child is seven.“ From 16 January 2017, changes in the rules for Income Support mean that you cannot make a new claim or a repeat claim to Income Support on the sole grounds of being a lone parent, if your youngest child is five or older. There will be a phased-in process for existing claimants, and there will be exemptions in certain circumstances if, for example, the child has a disability. If you want to phone me at the centre or call in and outline your specific circumstances, I will provide you with a full benefit check to make sure you are receiving your full benefit entitlement. W
e do this by streamlining our business as much as possible without compromising on quality. We believe that with the wealth of information available in magazines, online and on TV, everyone is capable of designing their own kitchen or bedroom. Modern fitted kitchens are simply individual units connected together to suit an existing space and who knows better than you how you want your units put together? How much storage do you really need? Do you prefer cupboards or drawers? Glass doors or solid fronts? A kitchen designers/
salespersons job is to get your thoughts, dreams and wishes and put them in a drawing and charge a premium for the ‘free-service’. At The Kitchen Unit Shop we’re here to supply everything you actually need. If you only want doors – fine; if you don’t need worktops – that’s fine, too. We’ll supply what you want, when you want and deliver it to where you want. Whether that is one unit or 100 units, The Kitchen Unit Shop is here to help. Up until now there have been two main choices - to buy a cheap flat pack kitchen or an expensive ‘designer’ kitchen from a high
street showroom. Now there is The Kitchen Unit Shop where all our outstanding quality units are made to order and factory assembled with 18mm backs ensuring they are built to last. We deliver to you with the doors already hung and drilled for handles: None of your time wasted on assembly.
We have 30 years of experience sourcing doors from the biggest UK & European manufacturers so we’ve got all the latest styles along with the fittings you want. We supply exactly the same doors and accessories you will see in expensive high street showrooms all over the UK– and if we don’t,
we’ll find you a similar style from our quality range of products. We can supply laminate, solid wood, Silestone and granite worktops at affordable prices. BELFAST BIKES SCHEME EXPANDS TO EAST BELFAST’S NEWEST LANDMARK
BELFAST BIKES
The hugely popular Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Belfast Bikes public hire scheme has extended its reach – to the city’s newest landmark.
T
he latest docking station to come into operation is at the new C.S. Lewis Square in east Belfast. This brings the number of docking stations in the city to 40 – an expansion of a third in its size since the scheme launched in April 2015. Situated three kilometres from the city centre, the new station is the furthermost to have been installed, and marks the first phase of the bike scheme’s expansion into the east of the city, with three more stations planned for 2017. New stations are also planned for the Falls Road and Grosvenor Road in west Belfast and Carlisle Circus in the north. Welcoming the latest expansion of the scheme, the Lord Mayor, Alderman Brian Kingston, said: “We’re delighted how popular the Belfast Bikes scheme has become in its first 19 months of operation. Seeing the diverse range of people using the bikes throughout the city, from business people to students and tourists, tells us that people are embracing the scheme – something
that is backed up by our membership figures, with more than 4,500 annual subscribers and over 4,600 casual subscriptions to date. With an average of over 580 bicycle rentals each day, the number of people using Belfast Bikes as a healthy, convenient and enjoyable way to travel within the city continues to grow – and we are fast approaching 350,000 journeys completed on Belfast Bikes. As the scheme expands, so does the popularity of the scheme, with September 2016 being its busiest month to date. “The availability of the Belfast Bikes scheme, together with the new bicycle infrastructure in the city centre, will help more people to have the freedom and confidence to travel by bicycle for everyday journeys. The success of the scheme reinforces the Council’s decision, along with the Department for Infrastructure, to back this initiative in 2015 and contribute to making Belfast a healthier and more cycling friendly city. Its reputation as such can only be enhanced by

Let’s face it, just like a good night out - half the fun of Christmas is the getting ready! Get excited about your Christmas decorating this year with some contemporary takes on Christmas style. Using some vintage in your decorating doesn’t mean being all ‘Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas’!; you can create lovely seasonal touches mixing old with new.
Jill O’Neill ReFound
Not Just For Christmas... • Glasses jars filled with white lights or decorations make a lovely table centre piece • Use lots of candles & candelabras decorated with foliage, Christmas lights or baubles to create a lovely relaxed festive look • Use paper & natural materials for some calm, Nordic style décor. Old book pages make great materials! As we are all about to go mad with overspending, perhaps rethink some of your purchases and indulgences. Instead of the
usual vouchers and gifts, think unique with a vintage option! What’s special about a vintage gift? It’s unique! People really do treasure and adore it when they take a vintage piece to its new home. It becomes a talking point for visitors; even better when there’s a bit of history to tell! They really are gifts that are enjoyed all year round. And if you’re stuck for man gift – these metal lamps and vintage pictures just might be a hit…
3 TIPS FOR BUYING VINTAGE THIS CHRISTMAS: • Buy what you like – Number 1! • Beyond just the beautiful, it is important to remember that antique furniture was designed to be fully functional. Make sure you are armed with measurements and ideas on how you/giftee will want to use it. • Listen to wise words The old adage, ‘buy the best you can afford and you will never regret it,’ remains as true as ever.

irst it’s clear that the growth of a design orientated world will continue. The look and feel of products, as well as how they are used, will become increasingly mainstream. Price will continue to be a factor, but increasingly consumers will focus on value rather than cost. Products that are beautiful, easy to use, and last the test of time will be cherished. At the same time there is a distinct trend toward minimalism. We may indeed have reached “peak stuff”, but this doesn’t mean a monk like abstinence from future purchases. Rather it involves greater discernment in what we buy. The polished silver kettle that lasts 30 years suddenly becomes a much better deal. The pursuit of lifestyle experiences
will continue to grow, but consumers will increasingly want to take charge of making those experiences happen. For example the barista experience will be extended from the coffee house to the home, as consumers experiment with different ways to brew and enjoy the bean from their own kitchen. More authentic experiences will also pervade our travel aspirations. Countries that have retained their distinct character, and are now re-engaging with the world, such as Colombia and Myanmar, will be high on the list. But we still love a good party, and Canada, which celebrates its 150th birthday next year, is Lonely Planet’s must visit destination of 2017. But how we travel will start to become just as important as where we go.
Our lives will continue to become more and more tech enabled. But there will be something of a pushback from the pervasive and intrusive nature of technology, as consumers re-appreciate the personality of products from an earlier time. The pleasure of a real book, personally selected in a local store, is already making a comeback; even Amazon is moving into high street retail. And despite the greater accuracy of smart phones, expect mechanical watches to be around for some time to come. And as for Christmas; well we predict a strong focus on family, food and films, along with the occasional mulled wine (or two). Some traditions are just too good to change.

24 FEATURES H I STORY
FEATURES • #23 • DECEMBER 2016
BY AIDAN CAMPBELL • EASTBELFASTHISTORY.COM Thanks for reading these local history articles in Loop and thanks too for readers’ comments and feedback. Look out for more history in 2017 – Happy New Year! ‘Ballymacarrett’ is now on sale and will make a very welcome Christmas present.
Christmas is Coming... These words are from an old nursery rhyme and quite appropriate too as we have been getting messages for some weeks about the forthcoming celebrations. But what about recalling Christmas and the bleak mid-winter in the greater East Belfast area years ago?
HANGING AROUND A great Christmas time display of turkeys hanging outside the shop in 1920. It is a byegone age and for all sorts of food hygiene reasons this scene is unlikely to be witnessed today. Thomas Ferguson established this butchery business in Ballymacarrett at 194 Newtownards Road in 1908. His son Bob is listed as the owner of the shop by the 1940s and he is standing (far left) alongside his sister Amelia with an unknown employee to the far right.
A RAFTER FROM THE RAFTERS Henry James Taylor owned a butchers’ shop at 56 Mountpottinger Road and during ‘The Troubles’ of the 1920s exchanged premises with another butcher based at 202-204 Albertbridge Road. The rent book shows that the monthly rent was £3/5s or £3.25p in modern currency. It is Christmas in 1932 at this shop front with another wonderful display of turkeys and Billy
Taylor is the wee 4 year old boy standing in the doorway with his mother. His father Henry who had taken over this shop in 1931 is standing to the far right. The business closed in 1988 after 68 years in Taylor family hands.
FIELD OF VISION A view of a field which was once occupied by the greenhouses of Camlin’s Nursery at Knock. It is Boxing Day 1960 with Jock the dog standing on the site of 2-8 Kensington Gardens West and Kingsden Park House is in the background. It is a snowy day and the greenhouses have all gone in anticipation of housing development which began in the early 1960s. Once upon a time there were many garden nurseries in East Belfast but most have closed and housing developments now occupy the ground. A lot of our fresh produce is imported and bought in large supermarkets now-a-days.
A CLOSE CALL The caption on this nicely posed old photograph declares: ‘Coronation Rifle Club at Neill’s Hill, 1910’. I have not been able to find any background or detail on this old club which seems to have been formed in the run up to the First World War. Although I am reminded of previous research related to wartime with the local Boys’ Brigade at Gilnahirk parading with rifles. I am told that the police also had a firing range for target practice in the sand pits at Neill’s Hill many years ago.
FILL ‘ER UP Bob McIlveen was a postman at Carryduff during the ‘Big Freeze’ of 1963 and he took this photo of Carryduff Service Station which was located at the junction of the Ballynahinch and Saintfield Roads. The Freeze began just after Christmas 1962 and records show it was the toughest winter the Province has ever faced and the coldest temperature of all during that
time was -15 degrees Celsius, recorded on January 24, 1963. It lasted until February and it must have been an especially tough in the days before modern conveniences such as doubleglazing and central heating.
WATTS GOING ON A picture-postcard scene of a snow-bound Ormeau Park in the 1970s. Notice the large gas holder of Belfast Gasworks on the horizon which was a landmark sight in Belfast for many years. The gasworks was closed in 1988 after 165 years in business, having been opened in 1823, and the gasholder was then demolished. Street lighting in Belfast was provided by gas lamps until the 1950s and the Belfast NewsLetter reported on Tuesday 17th December 1957 that ‘New fluorescent street lights were switched on at Donegall Place yesterday. This was the first part of Belfast’s new system of street lighting involving the switchover from gas to electricity’. The march of progress!
Aidan Campbell has previously published 12 East Belfast local history books entitled: Beaconsfield, Knock, Cherryvalley, Gilnahirk, Castlereagh, Cregagh, Stormont, Sydenham, Belmont, East Belfast Revisited Volumes 1 & 2 and Ballymacarrett. Also Belfast Through Time and Newtownbreda. He regularly gives illustrated talks to local groups and societies. The books are available at Hillmount Garden Centre, Marie Curie Hospice and Hamilton News Cregagh with profits donated to local charity.

Smartbond is a new technology that revolutionizes the strength of your hair after you have a colour service.
Smartbond works by strengthening your hair as you colour it. A Smartbond additive is added to your colour when in salon to help prevent further damage to your hair. The hair fibrw and cortex is made up of Keratin chains and these are linked by bonds. The point of Smartbond is to strengthen these bonds to improve the quality, feel and look of the hair. Smartbond is Suitable for the following hair types Damaged Hair, Sensitized Hair ,Dull looking hair, Coloured Highlighted and bleached hair. The hair becomes
Reinforced, More resistant, Softer, Shiny. Smartbond targets weaker parts of the hair bond to strengthen and limit stress to keep the bond in tact. Improve the overall finish of your hair colour as this will take more evenly. We highly recommend for clients who have bleach or lightened hair. Not only will it maintain good condition but it will strengthen the hair also. Does it affect my hair colour? No, Smartbond adapts to colour products without affecting the lift or tone at all.

HAIR STROBING
Hair and beauty trends are evolving each season and last year we saw make up trends converting over to the hair like contouring and we have seen it work well on our hair. This year the new trend is Hair Strobing highlights, which is similar to contouring where the light would naturally hit the face. This trend accentuates a persons best features, and compliment those they dislike with contrasting colours. Make-up strobing, as some may know, is contouring without the darkness, illuminating without the shadows, and it’s exactly the same for your hair. Hair Strobing suits everyone as colour is applied differently depending on their own face contour and where their hair parts naturally aims to enhance your natural colour with lighter pieces. This gives a more youthful effect to the hair the brightness of strobing makes your skin look warm and youthful. The combination of medium and thin baby-lights gives the strobing effect, a professional technique that is specific to the individuals hair color, face shape and skin tone.

Roast Crown Of Turkey With Sage & Onion Stuffing SERVES 6-8 75g (3oz) butter, softened 1 garlic clove, crushed finely grated rind of 1 orange 1 tbsp chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme 1 x 5kg (11lb) turkey crown 6 rindless smoked bacon rashers FOR THE STUFFING: 75g (3oz) butter 1 onion, diced 1 tsp chopped fresh sage 50g (2oz) pine nuts, toasted 175g (6oz) fresh white breadcrumbs sea salt and freshly ground black pepper FOR THE GRAVY: 1 tbsp plain flour 300ml (1/2 pint) chicken stock 1 Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F/gas mark 5). 2 To make the stuffing, heat a frying pan and melt the butter. Add the onion and sage and cook for a few minutes, until softened but not coloured. Add the toasted pine nuts, then stir in the breadcrumbs, mixing well to combine. Season to taste. Wrap the stuffing in buttered tin foil and mould into a large sausage shape, then chill until needed. 3 Next, prepare the turkey crown. Cream the butter until very soft, then add the crushed garlic, orange rind, parsley and thyme. Beat well until thoroughly blended. Gently loosen the neck flap away from the turkey breast and pack the flavoured butter right under the skin – this is best done using gloves on your hands. Rub well into the flesh of the turkey, then re-coverthe skin and
secure with a small skewer or sew with fine twine. Finally, cover the top of the crown with the rashers. 4 Place the turkey crown in the oven and calculate your time – it needs 20 minutes per 450g (1lb) plus 20 minutes, so a 5kg (11lb) crown will take 4 hours and you’ll need to put the stuffing in for the last half an hour. The turkey crown will cook much quicker than a whole turkey, so make sure to keep basting it. You can cover it with foil if it’s browning too quickly. When cooked, cover with foil to rest for 20 minutes and keep warm. 5 To make the gravy, skim all the fat from the cooking juices, then pour off all but 3 tablespoons of the juices from the roasting tin. Stir the flour into the pan residue and cook on the hob, stirring over a low heat until golden. Gradually pour in the stock, stirring all the time. Bring to the boil and let it bubble for 2–3 minutes, until thickened. Season to taste and keep warm. 6 To serve, carve the turkey crown into slices and arrange on warmed plates with the slices of cooked stuffing.
Christmas Ham With Sticky Apricot And Ginger Glaze SERVES 10–12 1 x 5.25kg (11 1/2lb) leg of gammon (on the bone) 4 celery sticks, roughly chopped 2 onions, sliced 5cm (2in) piece of root ginger, sliced 1 small bunch of fresh thyme 1 tbsp black peppercorns 4 whole cloves 2 star anise 1.5 litres (2 3/4 pints) cider 1 tsp ground ginger FOR THE GLAZE: 175g (6oz) good-quality apricot jam
or conserve 100g (4oz) light brown sugar juice of 1 lemon 4 star anise 4 pieces of preserved stem ginger, cut into small matchstick-sized strips 1 Although gammon is less salty nowadays, it’s still a good idea to soak it. Place the gammon in a large pan and cover with cold water. Leave to soak for at least 6 hours (or overnight is best), then drain. 2 Preheat the oven to 120°C (250°F/gas mark ½). 3 Use a large, deep roasting tin with a rack that’s big enough to hold the ham. Put the celery, onions, fresh ginger, thyme, peppercorns, cloves and star anise in the tin and pour over the cider, then put the rack on top. Sit the gammon on the rack and cover with a large tent of foil, sealing it well. Put on the hob over a high heat and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes, then transfer to the oven. Cook for 12 hours or overnight – you can now leave it for 1–2 days before finishing the recipe. Alternatively, leave it to rest and cool down for at least 30 minutes. 4 Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas mark 4). 5 Now make the glaze. Put the apricot jam or conserve in a small pan with the sugar, lemon juice and star anise. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved, then add the stem ginger and simmer for 3–4 minutes, until reduced to a thick glaze, stirring occasionally to ensure it doesn’t catch at the bottom. 6 Carefully peel away the skin on the ham, leaving the layer of white fat intact. Using a sharp knife, score the fat diagonally to make a diamond pattern, being careful not to cut into the meat. 7 Rub the ground ginger all over the
ham, then brush over all but a couple spoonfuls of the glaze, distributing the stem ginger strips and star anise evenly over the top of the ham. Roast for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until golden and sticky. Remove the cooked ham from the oven, transfer to a serving platter and leave to rest for 15–20 minutes. 8 To serve, carve slices from one side of the ham, cutting diagonally to achieve an even thickness. When you reach the bone, insert the knife at a flatter angle and slice across the top of the bone. Turn over the leg to carve slices from the other sides. Use as required.
MacNean Frangipane Mince Pies MAKES 18 FOR THE SWEET SHORTCRUST PASTRY: 175g (6oz) plain flour 100g (4oz) butter, diced and chilled 50g (2oz) caster sugar pinch of salt 1 egg yolk, plus beaten egg to glaze 1/2 tbsp cream 1/2 tsp lemon juice FOR THE FRANGIPANE: 100g (4oz) butter, softened 100g (4oz) caster sugar 2 large eggs 100g (4oz) ground almonds 1 tbsp plain flour 1/2 tsp almond extract, or to taste FOR THE FILLING AND TOPPING: 100g (4oz) mincemeat 25g (1oz) flaked almonds apricot jam, to glaze a little lemon juice or water icing sugar, to dust 1 To make the pastry, place the flour, butter, sugar and salt into a food processor and blend for 20
seconds. Add the egg yolk, cream and lemon juice and blend again just until the pastry comes together – do not overwork the dough or the pastry will be tough. Wrap in cling film and chill for 1 hour. 2 To make the frangipane, put the butter and sugar into the unwashed food processor and blend until soft and creamy. Scrape down the sides, then add the eggs and continue to process. Don’t worry if the mixture looks curdled at this stage. Add the ground almonds, flour and almond extract and mix briefly. 3 Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F/gas mark 6). 4 Roll the pastry out thinly on a lightly floured work surface and cut into 18 x 6.5cm (2½in) circles and use these to line the bun tins. Spoon a teaspoon of mincemeat into each tartlet and top with the frangipane. There is no need to spread the mixture flat, as it will level out in the oven (but don’t overfill the tins). Sprinkle a few flaked almonds on top of each one. Bake for 15–17 minutes, until cooked through and lightly golden, watching them carefully to make sure they don’t catch around the edges and burn. Remove from the tins and allow to cool a little on a wire rack. 5 Dilute the apricot jam with a little lemon juice or water and bring to the boil, then brush each warm tartlet with this glaze. Like traditional mince pies, these are best served warm with a light dusting of icing sugar. VARIATION Frangipane and mincemeat tart If you want to make a large tart, you can use the exact quantity above to fill a 23cm (9in) fluted loose-bottomed flan tin, which will take about 25 minutes to bake in the preheated oven.

Paula Bittles from Belfast City Airport said: “Being comfortable around new peers and new teachers can greatly alleviate some of the fear Year 8s can experience when starting a new school and this project was aimed at really developing these relationships from the very start of their secondary school life.” Alison Mungavin, Principal of Ashfield
Girls’ High School, said: “The funding received from the Belfast City Airport has been greatly appreciated and we wouldn’t have been able to carry out the team building day without them. Former Grosvenor Pupil Shortlisted For Prestigious Engineering Entrepreneur Award Congratulations to former Grosvenor pupil Eve McLelland who was recently shortlisted as a finalist in the Engineering category at the prestigious, province-wide ‘INVENT’ Awards 2016, held at the Waterfront Hall. ve’s entry for the entrepreneurial award, entitled ‘Em-Bed’, is a cardboard bed which doubles as a shipping container that can be packed with the types of goods that are desperately needed during disasters – fresh toiletries, food and basic medical supplies. The aim of the project is to help those in dire need during natural disasters, or refugees who’ve arrived exhausted in camps, by providing beds made from cardboard. The Em-Bed prototype, which was also featured recently on the BBC television programme ‘Made in Northern
E
Ireland’, was built with the help of ‘Frederick Jones’, a cardboard packaging company in Belfast, and has already helped Eve to joint-first place in a Dragons’ Den-style competition run by the Queen’s University Students’ Union Enterprise Department. Eve, currently in her second year as an undergraduate at Q.U.B., was inspired to begin work on this initiative during her A Level studies at GGS, when the Nepal earthquake struck. As she explains: “My first thought was that, during a disaster, people need non-perishable, canned food … but there are
many charities that already have their own food distribution systems that are well-established. This leaves disaster victims in desperate need of other goods, such as toiletries or clean underwear.” As well as promising to be a commercial success, Eve’s Em-Bed design also aims to make a social impact: from each unit sold, £3 will be donated to homeless charities. At present Eve is aiming to raise the £15000 required to launch the product and is in the process of setting up meetings with NGOs and charities.
CAMPBELL COLLEGE were delighted to host sell out events recently as part of the C.S. Lewis festival. The festival hosted two befitting events on the 19th and 20th November with a ‘Mini Narnia Adventure’ and a ‘Nearly True Tour’, which celebrated the incredible work of the renowned author of the Chronicles of Narnia.

DUNDELA LEAVE IT LATE TO BOOK PLACE IN FINAL DUNDELA 2 GLEBE RANGERS 0
DUNDELA may have left it late, before Matt Burrows finally provided the gloss, with goals in the 89th and 94th minutes to send the Premier Intermediate League side through to their 22nd Steel and Sons Cup Final, seeing off brave Ballymena and Provincial League outfit, Glebe Rangers at Seaview.
s joint manager Stephen Gourley admitted, “If we had taken one of the many chances we had in the first half, it could have been all over, but the longer it went on, there was the feeling that Glebe could nick one. “We dominated the game and still didn’t play that well. Glebe had a few long balls into the box, but they didn’t really hurt us; our defenders dealt with it and our goalkeeper didn’t have much to do. “Matty Burrows did very little all night and then he scores two right at the end – but that’s what he’s there to do. It’s nice, too, keeping a clean sheet, something that pleases David and me, as defenders!” The Duns made all the early running, with Gary Irwin skewing

one high over the bar. Thomas Healy came closer, rising high to meet Ben Browne’s right wing corner, only to see his header thud off the crossbar. Browne himself tried his luck five minutes later, but his dipping 25 yarder was safely gathered by keeper Chris Fullerton. On 23 minutes, Burrows conjured up some space in the Glebe box, only to drag his shot just wide. Jamie Jackson, though, really should have done better than to miscue from six yards on 35 minutes, after Mark McClelland had nodded the ball across goal. Scoreless then at the half way mark, and while the Ballymoney side saw more of the ball in the second session, chances were very

much at a premium. Burrows was at least trying to stir the crowd back into life, with a 20 yard effort deflected wide on the hour and then on 85 minutes, he tried his luck from distance, only for Fullerton to cling onto the ball at the second attempt. It was perhaps not surprising therefore that it Burrows who finally broke the ice just one

minute from time, stealing in to get his head to Irwin’s perfectly weighted free kick. Glebe had no other option but to throw caution to the wind, and four minutes into stoppage time, goalkeeper Fullerton went up for a last gasp long throw – only for Healy to clear the defensive lines, setting Burrows off on a long distance run, showing a cool head
by cutting inside a defender before depositing the ball into the gaping net. Dundela will meet Linfield Swifts in the final which this year will take place, at Seaview, on Christmas Eve. Kick off 10.45. Dundela: Sergeant; Jackson (66 Collins), L Roy, Healy, McClelland, Brown; Irwin, Browne (86 Ferguson), Lenaghan; Sofley, Burrows. Subs (unused) Leitch, Manley, Gourley

H&W WELDERS 3, LARNE 2
COMBER REC 0, ORANGEFIELD OB 2
Harland and Wolff Welders, meanwhile, returned to winning ways with Saturday’s Championship victory over Larne at Tillysburn Park.
After three defeats back to back Orangefield OB come back with a bang to turn the tables on Comber Rec
ive goals then, but there wasn’t even a hint of what was to follow in a disappointing first half. You’ve heard of the old football adage ‘end to end stuff’. No, it wasn’t like that, this was more ‘middle to middle stuff’ with goalkeepers Samuel Johnston and Joel Madison mostly surplus to requirements. Davy Rainey, however, lit the fuse on 65 minutes, with Darren Nixon nodding in a corner just four minutes later. The Welders looked to have the points stitched up when substitute Ethan Boylan made his mark off the bench on 72 minutes. Larne’s form on the road this year has been disappointing, but they didn’t give up, pegging a goal back through Matthew Henry, before Stephen O’Neill added a second in stoppage time. H&W Welders; Johnston, Middleton, Armstrong, Spence, McMurray, Nixon, Deans, Harris (Davidson), McKee, McLellan (Boylan), Rainey. Subs (unused) Dickson, S Devine, K Devine
rangefield Old Boys bounced back from three league defeats on the spin, to shatter Comber Rec’s unbeaten league run, in Saturday’s 1a tussle at Park Way. There was little between the sides in a scoreless opening session, with Comber perhaps having a slight edge. Rec came closer after the break, with the woodwork twice coming to Orangefield’s assistance. Instead, it was the visitors who drew first blood on 65 minutes; Jordan Boyd following up after Robert Moore’s initial long ranger had shuddered off the underside of the crossbar. It was Boyd, too, who sealed the points ten minutes from time, racing through to slip the ball over the advancing keeper. Orangefield OB: Taylor – L Cunningham (Keery), Hamilton, Johnston, Orderly – Dickey, =McDowell, K Cunningham, Moore (Tobin) – Boyd, Gracey. Sub (unused) Todd. Forthcoming Fixtures; Sat 10th – Islandmagee (h) Sat 17th – Islandmagee (a), Sat 31st – Suffolk (h), Clarence Cup

BLOOMFIELD 2, SHORTS 2 It was a point a piece for Bloomfield and Shorts in Saturday’s 1c derby at Houston Park. Shorts boss Lee Cathcart, though, claimed, “It felt like a defeat, especially when you score six goals away from home, and only two of them count. We had four ruled out for offside; three of them definitely should have counted, and I also could see nothing wrong with one of Bloomfield’s disallowed goals! It felt as if the game was all about the referee, and it wasn’t all one sided; there were just strange decisions for both sides. “But even with the goals disallowed, we should have won, We just never took our chances, especially in the first half, yet we went in at half time level. In the end, it turned into a bit of a battle!” While Shorts were able to field an unchanged team, Bloomfield were understrength, missing Brodie Leeman, Darien Shaw, Rab Roulston and Glen McVeigh, yet managed to stretch their unbeaten league run to eight games. Bloomfield manager Jason Elliott, on the other hand, felt “the referee was fantastic. Shorts had four offside goals and we had two, and I thought he got them all right! “We had players missing, so Shorts didn’t see the best of us. But we could have sneaked it in the end, with Michael Bowers going close. In saying that, Shorts ran the show for the first hour and had they taken their
chances, the game would have been over by half time. But we played some good football, and think we deserved that we bit of luck. That’s eight games unbeaten now – if only we could have turned some of those draws into wins, we could have been right up there!” Despite Shorts’ early edge, it was Bloomfield who showed the way; Mark Louden nodding in a Chris Cowden cross. The visitors grabbed a deserved leveller before half time when Scott Crawford’s left wing cross went in off a Bloomfield defender. One each then at the half way mark and things were looking ‘rosy’ again for Bloomfield when Gary Lamont beat keeper David Gibson to a Michael Bowers cross. Shorts, though, bridged the gap late on, with Dean Annon rounding keeper Harvey. Bloomfield; Harvey – Smith, Woods, Martin, Elliott (McBride) – Bowers, Getty, Cosgrove, Cowden – Louden, Lamont (Pollock). Shorts; Gibson – Graham, Wynne (Steele), Smyth, Crawford – Orr, McCormick (Bickerstaff), Ennis, Annon – Jamison, Dummigan. Sub (unused) Kerr. Forthcoming Fixtures; Bloomfield; Sat 17th December – Dromore Amateurs (h) Shorts; Sat 3rd December – Tobermore United (a) Irish Cup Sat 10th December – Bangor Swifts (h) Sat 17th December – Dunmurry YM (a) Sat 31st December – St Oliver Plunkett (a) – Clarence Cup
EAST BELFAST 2, 1st BANGOR OB 2 East Belfast had to settle for a point in this tussle with Division 1a pacesetters 1st Bangor Old Boys at East Park. The EastEnders were the better side in the opening session, taking a deserved lead when Warren Pinkerton crossed the ball onto the trusty head of Dee Wright. Maybe things would have turned out differently had East rammed home their advantage but efforts from Wright and Pinkerton shuddered off the frame of the goal. A slender one goal interval advantage sowed the seeds of doubt that East might regret letting 1st Bangor off the hook in that half and sure enough the visitors bounced back through a Ryan Harvey free kick. Bangor went one better, though there was a hint of controversy in that East were adamant that Sam McNaul had kicked the ball off the line. It was hard to say either if the referee was best placed to make a decision either way. East understandably tried hard to repair the damage, with Luke Wilson heading one just over and recent recruit from Ballyclare Comrades Kyle Dillon cracked one just past the post. Instead it was up to Alan Holmes to come to the rescue, nodding in a corner ten minutes from time. East Belfast; Halliday – McNaul, McCaughan, McMillan (Holmes), Coulter – Beattie (Garrett), Davidson, Pinkerton, Dillon – Wilson, Wright (White). Forthcoming Fixtures; Sat 10th – Dundonald (a)
Sat 17th – Newcastle (a) Sat 31st – Drumaness Mills (a) – Clarence Cup
BOURNEVIEW MILL 2, SIROCCO 6
Sirocco Works progressed through to the next round of the Intermediate Cup after this 6-2 victory over Mid Ulster side Bourneview Mill at Tandragee Road, Portadown. Sirocco, however, suffered an early blow when top goalscorer Lewis Irwin was dismissed for a mistimed challenge. Things degenerated further when Mill opened the scoring. Back, though, came Works with three quick goals from Nathan Duffy, Kurtis Hanna and Neil McLarnon. Yet this one wasn’t plain sailing quite yet, as Bourneview narrowed the gap just before half time. Sirocco came swiftly out of the traps with quick goals from McLarnon and Hanna. The only real burning issue was whether McLarnon or Hanna would complete their hat trick. McLarnon managed to come up trumps, scoring his third and Sirocco’s sixth just two minutes from time. Sirocco travel to Holywood in the next round to meet Division 1c side Bangor Swifts. Works still lead the pack in 1b, with 10 wins out of 10 Sirocco Works; Shields – McConville, Fleming, Allen (Graham) - Hanna, Spiers (Stitt), Mannus (Higginson), Stewart, Duffy – Irwin, McLarnon. Forthcoming Fixtures; Saturday 10th – Grove United (a) Saturday 17th – Colin Valley (h). Saturday 31st – Lisburn Rangers (h) – Clarence Cup.
GLENTORAN 1, ARDS 0
Glentoran posed the first real threat, almost taking a 10th minute lead; Allen just about to spin round and celebrate only to watch former team mate Aaron Hogg stick out his left hand and divert the half volley round the post. Eight minutes later, the ‘barrier’ moved from Hogg’s left hand to Elliott Morris’s right leg, as he managed to deprive Gareth Tommons. It was the Glens, nonetheless, who were looking the more threatening and Hogg once more earned the plaudits, getting the leverage in his legs to spring up and paw away a Ciaran Caldwell shot. Chris Lavery also went close, before Glentoran broke the stalemate four minutes from the break; Aaron Harmon flighting over a right wing cross where Allen just got round the wrong side of defender Hall, finishing with an ‘up and under’ over the helpless Hogg. Ards’ main danger, meanwhile, came from McKinney, who got onto the end of David McAllister’s right wing cross, but couldn’t manage to squeeze the ball past Morris. McKinney went close again firing the loose ball wide, after Stuart McMullan’s initial effort had been blocked. The club welcomed Alex Wright, Sean Mann and Todd Kropp, owners of Detroit City FC, and their partners to the Oval. Prior to kick off, the two clubs announced that there will be a friendly fixture held in Detroit next May, to mark the 50th anniversary of Glentoran representing the City of Detroit as the ‘Cougars’
