STRAND TOGETHER TO SECURE FUTURE OF EAST BELFAST LANDMARK As The Strand, NI’s oldest cinema and one of its most iconic buildings, heads towards its 80th Anniversary in December, this East Belfast landmark is calling on everyone to #StrandTogether to ensure a long-term future for the venue as a vibrant film and arts centre.

jewel of art deco design, it is the only remaining cinema in NI from that golden era when, at one time, Belfast boasted over 40 picture palaces. However, the building is in need of refurbishment if it is to play a transformative role in the local area and deliver for East Belfast a much needed cultural and community hub. Local residents, politicians, businesses, schools and community groups are invited to #StrandTogether and support this important local resource. Whether volunteering, attending events, making donations or simply sharing stories and pictures from the last 80 years for an anniversary exhibition in December – everyone can be part of what could be an exciting future for entertainment, arts and culture in East Belfast. Recently, the building’s short-term survival was secured when Strand Arts Centre was established as a not-for-profit charity in 2013 to create a community hub that enhances the arts and cultural offer. Strand Arts Centre Chief Executive Mimi Turtle said: “The Strand has served East Belfast well over the last 80 years and has survived as long

as could reasonably be expected without considerable investment, but now requires extensive renovation and modernisation to meet customer expectations and play a transformative role in the area. As a result of lack of space and poor facilities, we cannot presently accommodate some of the best performers and theatre companies who wish to be in our programme; the building is inaccessible in some areas for those with physical disabilities; and we are not able to meet demand for educational and skills development courses and workshops.” The refurbishment would transform the Strand and include three cinema screens showing the latest blockbusters as well as a programme of classic, cultural and educational films; two drama/dance studios and three smaller workshop rooms; two theatres seating 180 & 250 with a diverse programme of live performances throughout the year; and a café/bar fronting the Holywood Road. If you have any stories or memories from the Strand or for more info on #StrandTogether, go to www.strandartscentre.com or search for the Strand on social media.

Nine free camps are taking place at community centres, sporting clubs and local schools to encourage those aged between seven and 14-years-old to either learn something new or boost their expertise in a chosen sport. Councillor Julie Anne Corr Johnston, Chair of the People and Communities Committee, said: “We want to provide opportunities for young people to remain active over the summer, and are working closely with a number of sports governing bodies to do that through these sports camps. Making the best use of community facilities and - in partnership with local schools and community centres - we are offering sports such as dodgeball, netball, table tennis, rugby, football and bowls. We are urging children to sign up for a fantastic fun summer.” Information on and registration for the free camps, which run from early July to mid August, can be obtained by telephoning 028 9027 0344.

Having dedicated volunteers helps us reach more children and deliver quality services. The volunteers at our East Belfast Family Connections Service help support the staff, parents, children and babies. Having volunteers enriches the service we deliver and I was delighted to recognise their commitment during Volunteer’s Week.” Volunteers with Barnardo’s can take on a range of roles from befriending, to supporting young people with disabilities to administration to literacy support. Volunteers are also needed for our shops and to help us fundraise.

Wi l l yo u Zi p i t for M e ni ng i t is R e s e a r ch? Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) is looking for people from across the province to zip across the Lagan in Belfast on Sunday 20th September. Are you brave enough to step up to this adrenaline-filled challenge? Participants will set foot on a crane which will then be raised to an incredible150ft in the air! You will witness the most amazing views over the city before stepping off and whizzing 1000ft across the river, reaching super speeds of up to 40mph! MRF Fundraising Officer, Karen Dunlop commented, ‘Having taken part in this challenge before, I would encourage people to give it a go! The hardest part is taking that initial step off the crane but then you feel a great rush of adrenaline as you fly across the water. It’s a fun and memorable way to raise vital funds in the fight against meningitis and septicaemia. They are deadly diseases which are easily mistaken for milder illnesses like flu but can kill within hours or cause serious, life-long disabilities such as brain damage, amputations and blindness. With your support, MRF can continue to fund vital research projects, raise awareness of the diseases in the province and support those who have been affected.’ You must be at least 16 years old to particpate, pay a £39 registration fee and raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. Contact Karen on 028 9032 1283 or email karend@ meningitis-ni.org. Once registered, you will receive a fundraising pack and charity t-shirt to help get your fundraising off to a flying start. We would like to get as many people as we possibly can to zip the River Lagan so please sign up now – you could help save a life.
Cheques were presented to Cancer Focus and St.Colmcille’s Parish following a choral concert recently. The three choirs involved were from “Sing for Life”, St.Colmcille’s Church and St.Joseph’s Primary School. The concert was a fantastic success and raised £1700!

The unique Titanic Clock is handed over to Deputy Lord Mayor Alderman Guy Spence (right) and Belfast City Council Chief Executive Suzanne Wylie (centre) by Belfast businessman, Jim Fitzpatrick (left).
T
he elegant timepiece - valued at £150,000 – will be showcased in the reception area of City Hall from today until this Friday (19 June). Thereafter it will be placed in the Lord
Mayor’s Parlour. Owned by local businessman Jim Fitzpatrick, the clock is a one-off created last year by Patek Philippe (the world renowned Swiss luxury watch manufacturer). Its dome shape was crafted to recall the departure of RMS Titanic from Belfast 1912. Beautiful cloisonné enamel work illustrates the ship’s domed glass ceiling. Lengths of gold ribbon are used for the partitions, and the design contains 22 intricate enamel colours and 200 gold spangles. Mr Fitzpatrick said his rationale for making the loan was to mark the start of a new era thanks to the creation of the new Belfast City Council. “Belfast City Council and its City Hall is an appropriate home for the Titanic Clock,” he explained. “It is a symbol of the city’s illustrious past as an industrial centre of world standard. It draws attention to today’s revival in the Titanic Quarter. I am pleased in making this gesture to mark the beginning of the new Belfast City Council. Already there are signs of renewed vigour and determination to make Belfast a capital city worthy of the title and the pride of all its citizens”. The Deputy Lord Mayor said: “This is a wonderful and generous gesture which will no doubt be enjoyed by the hundreds of locals and visitors who pass through City Hall every day. Get ready for a camping experience like no other – the RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout is back for 2015! This year the charity will be getting close to nature at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra on 24 and 25 July and then heading west for even more fun at the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh on 8 August. With expert assistance available from Cotswold Outdoor, there’s no need to worry if pitching a tent isn’t your forte! Congratulations to Grosvenor Grammar School pupils Nathan Chan and Andrew Proctor who have been selected to represent Ulster Schools’ at the ‘GloHealth Interprovincial Championships’, to be held at Santry Athletics track, Dublin. Form four pupil Nathan, Irish Schools’ Champion in the junior age group in 2014, has been selected to represent Ulster in the triple jump while Andrew, form five, will compete in the 4 x 400 metres relay. Both pupils were members of the Grosvenor Intermediate 4 x 100 metres relay team which stormed to victory in the Ulster Schools’ Championships in May and narrowly missed out on gold, just edged into second place, at the Irish Championships in Tullamore a fortnight later. In addition to Nathan and Andrew’s selection, Grosvenor teachers Mrs Karen Kirk and Mr Andrew Gibson will also be present to coach all of the Ulster Schools’ relay teams on the day, with Mrs Kirk also performing the role of Team Manager at the event. All at Grosvenor wish Nathan and Andrew, as well as Mrs Kirk and Mr Gibson, the best of luck at this elite competition.

BY S AMANTHA B E LL | J E W E L L E RY D E S IGNE R Bohemian Vixen jewellery is designed & handmade in Belfast by Samantha Bell. The collection is made up
mostly of semi precious stones, chain, charms & some
upcycled vintage finds. Samantha designs for women and
men who like to have fun and express themselves through
their accessories. Here she shares some of her inspiration and designs for her favourite season of Summer.

I
started to make my own jewellery in 2010 right before I got married. My Honeymoon was fast approaching and
I knew from previous experience of travelling with future Husband that my marriage may be short lived if he had to pay excess baggage because of the amount of clothes I usually take on holiday! So I took fewer clothes and packed more accessories and looked like I was wearing something completely different every night of our trip. Now, the pieces I was making then were a whole lot more modest than what I create now, still it was the inspiration I needed to learn to create pieces as I do today. I am inspired daily, by life, people, my little people, our incredible night sky & trips to Ibiza (always in my heart & mind). As a huge fan of Boho & accessories, these Summer months excite me. I love to hear tales from my customers about where they are going on holiday and what outfits they are going to be wearing... their handlets, capes and ankle chains with. These pieces can be found on my website www.bohemianvixen.com or send me an email to discuss a bespoke piece - a service that has been most popular this year. I am currently designing my own jewellery for my holiday in Ibiza; I will have bare foot sandals, handlets, delicate fringed capes and upper arm cuffs to wear with my selection of kimonos (these of course are an essential part of every boho wardrobe) Individuality is key so I will be channeling my inner Stevie Nicks sunbathing at Formentera but doing it my way with LOTS more jewellery. xx

Some of these copper plate pieces form part of the final artwork Residents of Oaklee Housing Association’s Tamar Court also took part in workshops. They created an east Belfast themed stained glass window to display in their communal area. Their memories of east Belfast inspired the design for the window which includes H&W crane, flax flowers, chains and ropes. Participants learned a number of new skills including how to cut and paint glass and their stained glass window was unveiled as part of the ‘Of the River’ launch celebrations today.
