Belfast City Council’s Planning Committee approved the application from TitanicFoundation Ltd and Titanic Quarter Ltd, for the conversion and refurbishment of the Harland and Wolff headquarters and drawing offices into a 84-bedroom hotel with heritage-related tourist and event facilities. It’s the first major application that the committee has approved since council became responsible for planning in April, under Local Government Reform.

A number of remedial works – including archaeological digs and environmental impact assessments - will have to be carried out at the site before construction work can begin. Planning permission had already been approved for a 111-bed hotel on the site; however the application was revised and a new one submitted for a 84-bedroom hotel. It’s understood the development could generate up to 250 jobs during construction and 75 once the hotel opens. As a member of Belfast Eagle Sea Cadets I have been working around small boats for the past years and hold my shore based RYA day skippers, Belfast City Council also provided the opportunity for a Sea Survival course which was brilliant fun and allowed us to get to know some of the other trainees from Belfast.

It will be an experience I will never forget and I will forge friendships with my fellow shipmates that will last well into my life.

I

n 1982 I broke my ankle in a footballing accident. The surgeon at the time said it was one of the worst accidents he had seen

in sport. After the accident the bones got infected so it took a long time to heal. From then on I was in pain every day. When walking it felt like someone was sticking a knife into the side of my ankle. Then my ankle would swell and I would be completely unable to walk. I had to plan everything that I was doing so that I didn’t have to walk much. The furthest I could walk was about half a mile and after that I would have to sit with my foot up for hours. The pain was constantly there and when it was severe I couldn’t even stand or walk at all. I would lie with my ankle up to relieve the swelling and no matter what tablets I took they made very little difference. I saw an advertisement for The Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic in a local paper. It described how the owner David Hallowell had developed a special insole that rocked in your shoe for patients with injured ankles. I contacted the clinic and made an appointment for a consultation. David explained how the device worked and took a cast of my foot.

About a week later I was given my rocker insole.

The rocker has been very successful and the pain reduced significantly within a few days. I was also able to walk further than I had in over 30 years. I am now able to walk 2 miles without

T

he fourteen foot high sea creature from Celtic mythology known as a Fomorian was created by local artist Terry Dorrian. Fomorians were mythological half human, half sea monster creatures associated with the waters of the

Celtic fringe including Strangford Lough (Loch Cuan). Planted at the base of the new sculpture is an Irish yew which was taken as a cutting from the original ancient Irish yew in Florence Court, County Fermanagh. The yew will take years to grow over the new structure, bringing it to life in the centre of the garden. This new installation would not have been possible without the generous donation from National Trust supporters Mr and Mrs Graham Gund from Massachusetts, USA. The Fomorian was inspired by drawings in the margins of the book, Queen Mary 1st ‘Book of Hours’ (Queen Mary’s Psalter), from which Edith, Lady Londonderry drew inspiration when she created Mount Stewart Gardens. The installation of the impressive topiary follows the successful completion of the £8m restoration project at Mount Stewart. Visitors to the house can now enjoy previously unavailable rooms and hundreds of internationally significant items.
