THE YOUNG AND OLD OF EAST BELFAST GATHER TO ‘MAKE AN OPERA’ AT THE ULSTER MUSEUM
P7 pupils from Strandtown Primary School joined with tenants from Dean Crooks Fold to create a performance of music and song inspired by the Window on the World display at the Ulster Museum.
T
he project entitled ‘Let’s Make An Opera’ is a joint venture with Arts Care, National Museums Northern Ireland and the Public Health Agency. It is part of the ‘Here and Now’ festival which celebrates the Arts of Ageing Well. Live & Learn teams at the Ulster Museum, Ulster Folk & Transport Museum and Ulster American Folk Park are working with groups of older adults in creative workshops using music, movement and song inspired by the collections of each museum. The Ulster Museum performance by the children and older people was inspired by some of the Museum’s collection including

a Celtic high cross, a Native American totem pole and a Sri Lankan dance mask. The project also included creative sessions facilitated by composer Elaine Agnew and drama practitioner Charmaine McBride from Arts Care’s team of professional artists. Ruth Osborne from the Live and Learn team at National Museums Northern Ireland said, “There is enormous value in projects like this one. As well as sharing many laughs and exchanging stories as we explore some of the museum’s collection, we also found this to be a very stimulating time for the group. We are involved in numerous projects like this one

and participants find it most beneficial. ” Arts Care CEO and Artistic Director, Dr Jenny Elliott said, “The ‘Let’s Make An Opera’ project offers young children and the older people the opportunity to visit the museum together, some perhaps for the first time. The festival is really about enhancing older people’s well-being through quality arts engagement and Arts Care is delighted to be partnering the Ulster Museum in this life enhancing project. It is an ambitious project but having skilled facilitators Elaine and Charmaine on board with the largest Irish Wolfhound and the Totem Pole will make this an ‘opera’ not to be missed!” The project culminated in a performance devised by pupils and tenants using music, song and movement inspired by the folklore and legends represented by the Museum’s Collections. P7 pupil Jonathan Robinson from Strandtown Primary School said “It has been so much fun to learn about objects at the Ulster Museum and then use what we have been taught to create a special performance. It has also been good to work on a project with people who are much older than us.” Monica Simpson, who is a tenant at Dean Crooks Fold on the Upper Newtownards Road, said, “This has been such a lovely project to be involved in. The Strandtown P7s have been absolutely delightful – so engaging and entertaining.”

Hello East Belfast
WELCOME TO THE LOOP

What’s inside this month...
S
o here we go with issue number 2 of The Loop. Feedback has been fantastic for issue one and we’ve had a great response from the local community who have got in touch with their stories, achievements and news which we are more than happy to share in this months edition. So always remember, if you have something that you’ve been involved in or that is coming up that you would like the rest of East Belfast to know about, just get in touch via the details to the right and we can help out. Similarly if you would like
to spread the word about your business to over 40,000 homes across BT4, BT5, BT6 & BT16, we can help. We have a great selection of advertising opportunities with great rates too. Inside this month alongside our fantastic advertisers, we have all the latest news hot off the press. There have been some cracking charity and community initiatives taking place from debt counselling, health, sport and beyond, all resulting in a positive outcome for local people in more ways than one. Schools have been busy too breaking records and going
TOO EMBARRASSED TO GET DEBT HELP?
EAST BELFAST DEBT COUNSELLING CHARITY HOST INFO DAY @ CONNSWATER A debt counselling charity has told how clients in NI suffered in silence with poor finances for years before finding the courage to ask for help.
A
survey from Christians Against Poverty (CAP) showed six in ten of its debt clients delayed calling the charity for more than a year, with 29 per cent waiting more than three years. “People will know if they have a problem,” said East Belfast CAP Centre Manager David McConkey, speaking at an information day at Connswater Shopping
Centre. “They will be the ones who are awake at night worrying; unable to meet frequent creditors’ demands and struggling to afford the basics of life. Today we are saying, if that is you, now is the time to get some help to sort things out.” Research from CAP shows more than half thought they could sort out their debts themselves while 42 per cent felt
behind the scenes at one of Belfast’s arts venues. Community safety has been high on the agenda too so we have some news on that. We also have some fantastic health advice, a report on the amazing revamped RSPB reserve on Belfast Lough, a what’s on guide, local football and so much more that we’re running out of space to tell you about! Best thing to do is get stuck in and enjoy. You can also find us on Facebook under looppublications. We’ll be back next month, in the meantime, keep on keeping us in the loop with what’s happening!
embarrassed or ashamed. “The reality is, if you try to tackle the big companies as an individual, they react very differently from when a debt counselling charity gets in touch. We are speaking to the banks and loan companies every day as we make negotiations on behalf of people. Asking for this kind of service need not be embarrassing. CAP is not an organisation that will make a judgement about what you could have done or what mistakes you made. We are just interested in setting the wheels in motion to get you debt free.” CAP has 18 debt centres throughout Northern Ireland from Foyle to Mid Down with four operating in Belfast. Each one gives free help in the clients’ home regardless of age, gender, faith or background. Christians Against Poverty is a multi award-winning UK charity determined to lift people out of hardship via debt help, job clubs, money management courses and more. All the services are run by trained staff, through a network of hundreds of churches across the UK.

spectacular 430 metre long track and sent the Belfast crowd into frenzy with his scintillating performance in the finals of the world’s fastest sport on skates. It was an all-Canada sweep with Dylan Moriarity taking second place and his twin brother Dean taking third -- all three athletes on the podium. Austria’s Luca Dallago took fourth in an action-packed
final.“It feels amazing to win here in front of such a great crowd and especially against so many of the top guys in our sport,” said Croxall, who had been winless in 13 successive finals in his six-year career before winning the Red Bull Crashed Ice race in Helsinki two weeks ago and then the Riders Cup race in Jyväskylä, Finland on February 14. “I’m just happy to get the win here. I’ve worked hard on getting my starts faster out of the gates and I’m going to keep working hard for that title.” The race was the hottest ticket in Belfast, a city bursting with pride to host the fastest racetrack ever built. It was a fantastic course the riders loved that dropped straight down the steps of the parliament and into a vast hill packed with amazed fans. The fast and furious track also featured a 5.5 metre high step-up over the highest bridge ever built for a race as well as punishing sets of bone-jarring jumps and bumps before a high-speed U-turn Wall Ride right before the finish line. Red Bull Crashed Ice is a world series in the winter extreme sporting event of ice cross downhill. It is a four man full-contact, high-speed, downhill ice skating race along a 440 metre track, with steep turns and vertical drops, reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h in a timed battle, where the first to the bottom wins. The energy and competitive spirit of Red Bull Crashed Ice mad for a breathtaking spectacle and a hugely entertaining event for all.
CONGRATULATIONS To Grosvenor Grammar School’s star canoeist Alistair McCreery, Lower Sixth, who was recently informed of his selection to represent Ireland at the upcoming ‘Junior and Under 23 World Canoeing Championships’, due to be held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, from 22nd -26th April 2015. Alistair’s selection for this prestigious global event was secured following his participation in a qualification competition on Nottingham’s River Trent last November, where his second-placed finish over the two days of competition helped to guarantee him one of the three spots available. For Alistair. who trains locally at Shaw’s Bridge as well as regularly in Nottingham, and who recently achieved a second-placed finish at the province-wide ‘Shaw’s Bridge Domestic Race’ in early February, his selection to compete in Brazil represents a huge achievement, and one of which all at Grosvenor are extremely proud. Well done to Alistair on his superb achievement and we look forward to following his fortunes at the World Championships, as well as at various other competitions throughout the season, over the remainder of the year.

EAST BELFAST POLICING AND COMMUNITY SAFETY PARTNERSHIP IS GETTING IT RIGHT BY INVOLVING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE IN ITS WORK.
East Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) picked up a Highly Commended Award in participation at a ceremony in Belfast on 18th February.
Y
oung people from the Commissioner for Children and Young People’s (NICCY) Youth Panel developed the Participation Awards to recognise government and public bodies when they successfully involve children and young people in their work. The young people developed three categories for the awards; ‘Preparing Your Organisation for Participation’, ‘Engaging with Children and Young People’ and ‘Follow up and Demonstrating Impact’. East Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership
picked up a Highly Commended Award for ‘Engaging with Children and Young People’ Jill Lapping, from east Belfast, and a member of the Commissioner’s Youth Panel said: “Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that children have the right to say what they think should happen and have their opinions taken into account when adults are making decisions that affect them. Children and young people’s services play an important part in the responsibilities of many public
bodies and we expect that each would incorporate young people in their projects. While this is not always the case, East Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership is one of many which are doing things right.” This is NICCY’s third Awards scheme, which encourages adults to listen to the opinions of children and involve them in decision-making. The young people have noticed a marked improvement in the type of applications they are receiving. Chief Executive at the office of the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, Mairéad McCafferty, said, “This is good news for these organisations, for children and young people, and for Northern Ireland society as a whole. It shows that children and young people’s inclusion and participation is beginning to be taken seriously. Services are more effective when young people contribute as active citizens. While it was very difficult for the Youth Panel to choose the winners from the many excellent entries, East Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership demonstrated an outstanding commitment to involving children and young people, listening to them, and more importantly acting on what they said. I would like to congratulate Jill, who along with other members of the Youth Panel, designed and developed the awards process based on their experiences from previous years, judged all entries to the awards and organized the event itself.”

UCIT REACHES £50M MILESTONE WITH LOAN TO LANDMARK EAST

East by providing a £200k bridging loan which has enabled the company to accept funding from Belfast City Council and Tourism NI and proceed with an exciting £774k capital build project at Holywood Arches – the new EastSide Visitor Centre. CEO of the East Belfast Partnership, Maurice Kinkead said: "We are focussed on the regeneration of east Belfast. There are a number of derelict and vacant properties on the Newtownards Road that we feel can be transformed to improve the overall look of the area. The new development will help increase footfall in the area which in turn will help traders. We are also currently onsite building the new Bryson Street GP surgery on the Lower Newtownards Road." Speaking of UCIT's backing for the project, he said: "Financing regeneration projects in the present climate is a real challenge. UCIT have been extremely supportive of our plans to revitalise the area. The redevelopment would not have been possible without their assistance." Mr McDaid commented: "What Landmark East is doing is revitalising this historic area of Belfast and in the process creating opportunities and making a difference to the lives of the local community. This combination of physical improvement, economic impact and social contribution is an outstanding example of community enablement, one that should be followed elsewhere. UCIT is delighted to be involved in the project."

ST PATRICK TO COME TO LIFE IN BELFAST The annual celebrations are all set once again with the line up of guests and performances now in place for the big day.
Belfast is gearing up for this year’s spectacular St Patrick’s Day parade and concert. Strictly Come Dancing finalist and member of smash hit boy band ‘Blue’, Simon Webbe, will be the concert’s headline act at Custom House Square. On Tuesday 17 March, the story of Ireland’s patron Saint will come to life in the streets of Belfast at this year’s fantastic high energy carnival parade created by BEAT Carnival, taking a traditional look at the story of St Patrick. The parade will set off from City Hall at 12 noon and make its way to Custom House Square where the free concert will run between 1pm and 3pm. Entry to the concert is on a first come, first served basis. Gates will open at 12 noon and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. A giant puppet of St Patrick will chase model snakes along the route as it makes its way to the concert venue. There will be colourful performances from the many musicians and pipe bands on show, eye-catching floats, carnival dancers and performers, as well as many more festival treats. Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon will also have her own Best of Belfast section in the Parade. Some of Belfast’s most decorated sports men and women, including local volunteering heroes will be on board to join in with the day’s festivities. Citybeat radio’s breakfast duo Stephen Clements and Sara Neill will return to the stage again this year as comperes. There will be energetic displays of dancing from Irish dancing superstars and Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists Innova along with Sollus Highland Dancers. Performances from Louis Walsh’s newest boy band HomeTown, , contemporary country music trio, Saffyre and traditional musicians Beyond the Pale will keep the crowds dancing and entertained throughout the afternoon.

he Ulster Community Investment Trust (UCIT) has reached an historic milestone by lending over £50 million into the Community, Voluntary and Social Enterprise sectors in Northern Ireland since its inception 13 years ago. UCIT provides affordable loans across these sectors throughout Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland. As a registered charity, all profits generated by UCIT are retained and recycled for the benefit of its clients. Harry McDaid, chief executive of UCIT commented "Last year UCIT made loans totalling £3.7 million across 38 different community projects with the all-Ireland aggregate rising to £5 million. These included community associations, health and social care projects, charities, youth initiatives, sporting organisations and a wide range of other worthy recipients. Realistically, without the support of UCIT, these organisations would not have had access to funding and their investment plans would have been frustrated." One of the most recent companies to benefit from funding is Landmark East, a not-for-profit business developing unused and derelict properties. The company's property portfolio stretches across 12 different sites including George Best's former house, Enler Complex, Bloomfield House, and Avalon House. Landmark East is a subsidiary of the East Belfast Partnership. UCIT has recently supported Landmark

FUNDRAISER FOR MATCHLESS GOOD CAUSE CIYMS Tennis Club from East Belfast had a ‘ball’ raising £400 at a recent tournament for Marie Curie Hospice.

Every year the club makes a special effort to raise vital funds for a worthy charity and, as Club Captain John Caithness explains, that’s a win-win situation for all.
H
e says, “We are all delighted to have the opportunity to make some small return to an organisation which contributes so much to our community. Several club members have had direct experience within their own family circles of Marie Curie in action so it was a perfect focus for this most recent fund raising initiative. It may seem a chilling prospect to be playing tennis – even for such a good cause – in the midst of winter, but even the worst of the weather didn’t deter our tennis members from taking part as we held our tournament in the comfort of our dome!”
eople of all ages from the Short Strand and Lower Newtownards Road in East Belfast come together in June as part of The Big Lunch 2015. The Big Lottery funded event “is about bringing people together and improving people’s sense of community”, organisers say. Last year 4.83 million people took part in similar events across the UK. But this year organisers say they want the June 7 get together to include interface groups “to help tackle some of Northern Ireland’s deepest social divisions”. Short Strand resident Jacqui O’Donnell said she thinks the lunch could “be a great help for this area. We have had some difficult situations, and even though many people are keen to reach out sometimes they can be frightened, but we have to keep moving forward despite any setbacks. Living on an interface comes with its own pressure – they are often the site of violence but not always the source. People here want to develop good relationships with all those who live nearby. I believe the Big Lunch can help with that. The solution to issues here is far from being as simple as taking the peace walls

down, what is vital is creating opportunities for people from different communities to come together and get to know one another. I’m a great believer in cross-community work, and I believe that the younger kids are when they get involved the greater the benefits, because you can get them playing and growing up together. I live and work in the Short Strand and I know what it is like to raise kids here.” Jackie Upton, from the Lower Newtownards Road, said there are “ongoing issues associated with this interface” like homes being attacked in both areas. He added: “It’s frightening for people. We are already doing a lot of cross-community work, and that’s crucial for moving things forward. The Big Lunch is a way to do that that’s going to be social and it’s going to be fun. A lot of people’s efforts concentrate on difficult issues but this will be a way to come together more informally – it’s about meeting people and chatting, there will be no stress, and because of that it will help break down barriers.” Go to the website to request a free pack or call 0845 850 8181 to speak to one of the team.

COULD YOU CHANGE A CHILD’S WORLD THIS YEAR? The facts about foster care Approximately 600 children live with foster carers in the Belfast Trust area. Foster care is needed for many reasons. Parents may have health related problems that prevent them from caring adequately for their children whilst the childhood experiences of others can make it difficult to be a parent themselves. Others who have children with a disability may need support in caring for them.

THE PETER MAUD 10K WALK A true gathering of hairdressers and dogs. “What better time for us to do something to help other people than to do a sponsored walk to help not one but two charities! They are Action Cancer and Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke. Ten hairdressers and six dogs walked along the River Lagan at Shaw’s Bridge on a glorious afternoon. The clients, friends and family gave us the help and we raised £900 in sponsor money which motivated us to get outside on a cold Sunday morning to clear our heads and there wasn’t a blow-dry in sight! Sarah-Jayne Cassell came to receive the cheque for Action cancer and Anne MeGarry from Knock Belmont Support Group of Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke attended also. Thanks to you all who supported us with kindness for these wonderful charities.”

One of Belfast’s most successful restaurant groups is set to bring its popular modern Italian flair to the north coast - setting up a new eatery and creating around 30 jobs. The team behind East Belfast’s Il Pirata and also city centre restaurant Coppi are to taking over Sweeney’s wine bar business in Portballintrae which has been closed for some time. The venture will create around 30 jobs and is set to open in May. The plan is to maintain the look and feel of an old pub alongside some modern Italian fare with some popular dishes from the Belfast restaurants too. This news comes hot on the heels after Harry’s Shack in Portstewart received a stunning a review from renowned Observer food critic, Jay Rayner.
Foster carers are ordinary people with time and space in their lives to devote to a child or young person. Fostering doesn’t necessarily require a full time commitment and there are a wide range of children from babies to teenagers who need looked after for varying amounts of time. Some desirable qualities are patience, understanding, compassion, flexibility and a good sense of humour! Belfast Trust considers applications irrespective of age, gender, race, religion, marital status, income, working arrangements or sexual orientation. Foster carers receive financial allowances, ongoing training, 24 hour social work support as well as social activities.

POP UP SHOP SHOWCASE OF LOCAL ARTISANS
Participants on the Belfast City Council’s Start Up Retail programme opened a pop-up shop in Belfast selling their unique crafts and food products. TWENTY PEOPLE took part in the popular programme to help develop the skills needed to set up their own retail businesses with a particular emphasis on food and craft industries. As well as receiving mentoring and attending business development workshops and best practice visits to retail outlets in Belfast, Dublin and London, they had the chance to test trade and sell their products at the pop-up shop on the Lisburn Road. Among the products on sale were silk handbags, skin creams and oils, artist designs and prints, jams and chutneys, meat rubs and spices, up cycled products and fairy doors. Councillor Deirdre Hargey, Chair of Belfast City Council’s Development Committee, said: “The Start Up Retail programme is an excellent initiative supporting local entrepreneurs through oneto-one mentoring and tailored workshops as well as providing them with the opportunity to test trade and sell their handmade products at a pop-up shop model. I want to wish the participants on the programme every success with selling their products and promoting their businesses too.”
MOVIE MAGIC AT CITY HALL The bright lights of the big screen came to City Hall, when Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon hosted a ‘Movie Night’ for young people across Belfast. ON FRIDAY 13TH FEBRUARY, 200 young people from youth groups across the city joined the Lord Mayor at this unique event. The Great Hall was transformed into a makeshift cinema, with bean bags, deck chairs and cushions providing a comfy and informal setting for the young people to relax in. Sweet cones courtesy of the Welcome Organisation as well as slush puppies provided by Lovefloss kept those with a sweet tooth happy, as blockbuster epic ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ played out on the big screen. Councillor Nichola Mallon said: “This event is the first of its kind to take place inside City Hall and it’s great to see so many young people coming along and interacting with City Hall in a fun and enjoyable way. One of my priorities as Lord Mayor has been to open up City Hall to all of the citizens of Belfast. It’s important that our young people feel they have their place within this historic building and as this event shows, when you provide the opportunity they jump at it.” She added: “I hope that this fun event won’t remain unique and will happen again in the future.” Members of Belfast City Council’s Youth Forum, the Policing and Community Safety Partnership and Safer Neighbourhood officers were present on the night, ushering the young people to the Great Hall and registering the groups as they arrived.

BELFAST PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS ARE RECORD BREAKERS PRIMARY SCHOOLS in Belfast have taken part in a massive enquiry-based lesson and tried their hand at solving a “crime” using science, as part of a successful Guinness World Records attempt. The 1,339 students taking part also had the opportunity to talk to STEM ambassadors, and watch a W5 Science Show. The event was run by the British Council and the Royal Society of Chemistry and forms part of the inaugural Northern Ireland Science Festival. The record breaking science lesson was part of more than 100 events across Northern Ireland as part of the 11-day festival which took place from 19th February to 1st March 2015. The aim of the festival is to celebrate this region’s rich scientific heritage and to engage the next generation of scientists and technology professionals. “To complete the record they had to follow a set of specific guidelines,” explained Guinness World Records adjudicator Pravin Patel, who witnessed the record attempt. They had to complete at least two experiments and complete a workbook, which they did - and it was fantastic. They’re such an enthusiastic bunch. It’s great to see school kids taking part in a large practical lesson.” The NI Science Festival is funded by the Department of Employment and Learning, Belfast City Council, Queen’s University, Ulster University and the British Council.

A DAY CENTRE for older people in east Belfast has become the first place in Northern Ireland to receive a Comic Relief plaque to celebrate the good work being done in the community. The Age NI project at the Skainos Centre on the Newtownards Road received funding from the charity to support older people through Arts for Dementia workshops. Age NI day centre manager Wendy McKillion says the service is vital for people living with dementia and clients benefit greatly from Comic Relief funding. “The art project began a year ago and we started to see how beneficial it was to our clients,” Wendy said. “We did not know what the response would be, but it’s been brilliant and most people have really taken to it.”

The story of how an injury incurred decades ago took its toll many years later and the process undertaken by David Hallowell from Northern Ireland Foot to dramatically reduce the pain levels.

originally injured my ankle in a motorcycle accident in 1970. My ankle bone was fractured and it came out of its socket. This resulted in my ankle being surgically pinned. The pain really started about 15 years ago and it steadily got worse over time. To the point where it was difficult to work or to go for even a short walk. The pinning left my ankle stiff with very little movement which made it hard to walk over rough ground or up slopes. I attended Musgrave Park Hospital and they gave me a brace for my ankle but it was very impractical and the pain in my ankle was unbearable when I took it off.
MARCUS RIDING HIGH AFTER MOTORCYCLE INJURY
David says “The secret of the rocker is that unlike most ankle braces it is designed to facilitate movement not to reduce it. By mimicking the ankles own movement it reduces stress on the ankle foot and lower limb. Our patients often try a sample device during the examination to allow them to really get the feeling of walking properly again.”
My sister gave me a copy of the Chatterbox Newsletter and I read an article about a new shoe insert which had been designed and developed by the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic. I phoned and made an appointment to see David Hallowell the Podiatrist who designed the device. David examined my ankle and said that the restriction in movement was the cause of my pain and that I would benefit from the new rocker device. The rocker has to be custom made so about a week later I had it fitted.
David says: “With this type of ankle injury you can be in pain every time you stand up. For many of our patients just being able to walk around the local shops can be a real challenge. For some this can be very depressing. It’s extremely gratifying to be able to help them walk pain free again.” It has been wonderful to be able to do a full days work with no severe pain and not having to limp around at night. I would recommend to anyone with this type of injury to give the rocker a go as I have found it to be of great benefit.
“The Northern Ireland Foot & Ankle Clinic has been treating painful foot conditions for over 20 years. We pride ourselves in providing a quality service with an emphasis on producing the finest in shoe inserts available anywhere. We are the only suppliers of the revolutionary Ease Forward Ankle Rocker System which literally replaces the movement which is often lost in injured or arthritic ankle joints. We also incorporate the Premier Gait Analysis Centre our specialist area for the management and treatment of sports injuries and lower limb dysfunction.”

ROSEMARY MCWATTERS OPTICIANS AM I OK TO DRIVE....?
“...is a question I am often asked at the end of an eye test. Legally you must be able to read, in good daylight, with spectacles or contact lenses if usually worn, a number plate from a distance of 20 metres which is about 4 car lengths. You must also be able to read the 6/12 line on a standard eye test chart, that is the line about half way down. While you can measure out the 20 metres yourself, a visit to your optician is the best way to confirm that your sight is up to the legally required level. Last year the road safety charity Brake commissioned a survey which showed that 1 in 8 people who were advised to wear spectacles for driving admitted that they drove without them. In addition 1 in 3 of those who said they did not wear glasses had not had an eye test in over 2 years. Even more alarmingly, 4% which is the equivalent of 1.5 million drivers, said they had never had an eye test and so admitted they could not be sure if their vision was up to the standard or not.
I SEE CLEARLY
through Nikon spectacle lenses
THE BEST ADVICE IS
· Have a regular eye test, especially as you get older and your vision changes · If you are advised to wear your glasses when driving, make sure that you always do. Your optician can give you advice on the best type of frames and lenses, including which tints and coatings are most suitable for driving. Anti-reflection or anti-glare lenses can reduce dazzle from headlights, while tinted lenses are not suitable for driving at night but can be helpful on a sunny day. Last but not least, don’t forget that a clean windscreen both on the inside and the outside makes it easier to see what is ahead.

sthma affects 5.4 million in the UK. It is a common long term condition which affects all ages causing mild to severe symptoms. The severity of asthma symptoms varies from person to person. These symptoms range from coughing and wheezing to more severe symptoms such as chest tightness and shortness of breath. These are often worse at night and early in the morning. Severe asthma attacks may require hospitalisation. Symptoms may be brought on if asthma is uncontrolled or by certain triggers including: ANIMAL FUR DUST TOBACCO SMOKE POLLEN COLD AIR EXERCISE INFECTIONS

These cause irritation to the lungs resulting in inflammation of the airways or bronchi making it difficult to breathe. Although there is no cure for asthma it can be well controlled. Treatment aims to relive symptoms and prevent further attacks. Asthma is usually treated with inhalers. These devices deliver medicine directly to the lung as we breathe in. Each inhaler works in a slightly different way and so it is important we are shown the correct technique. Why not pop into McDonalds or Strandburn Pharmacy today and have your inhaler technique checked as part of a community pharmacy funded service?

Nature on your doorstep
PREPARE TO BE
WOW-ED!
RSPB NI’s Belfast Lough nature reserve in the Harbour Estate has undergone an extensive refurbishment and has been re-named Belfast’s Window on Wildlife (WOW).
T
he RSPB NI’ Belfast Lough nature reserve in the Harbour Estate has undergone an extensive refurbishment and has been re-named Belfast’s Window on Wildlife (WOW). Belfast WOW is an unexpected product of Belfast’s industrial past. When material dredged from the Lough was pumped here to allow larger vessels to dock, the area was quickly reclaimed by nature. It is now home to birds and other wildlife from all over the world and more than 100 species have been recorded at the site. Major construction work has seen the existing visitor centre extended to give even better views and state-of-the art interpretation brings the visitor facilities to life. From the visitor centre, you can experience panoramic views of the lagoon but don’t worry if you’re not an ID expert - there will be binoculars and telescopes available and friendly RSPB staff and volunteers on hand to help! The refurbishment includes a new community room, which is available for hire, and a full events calendar makes Belfast WOW a great place to visit all year round. RSPB NI has also constructed lots of new homes for nature at the site, including a sand martin bank and a swift tower, which will be installed in the spring. Two new hides, which have been constructed from shipping containers to tie in with their surroundings, offer different perspectives on the
reserve and feature a members-only area, which is suitable for photography. There’s lots to see at the reserve no matter when you visit. In summer artificial islands give common and Arctic terns a safe place to breed and the reserve comes to life with the sound of many warblers arriving from Africa. In winter, the water is full of wildfowl like wigeon and teal, while blacktailed godwits can be seen digging in the mud for food. Resident konik ponies also graze the reserve, acting as ‘living lawnmowers’ and creating ideal conditions for groundnesting birds like lapwings. This ambitious project was made possible by funding from the European Regional Development Fund administered by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Belfast Harbour Commission and the Alpha Programme administered by Groundwork NI.
Belfast WOW will be open every day except Tuesday, from 10am to 5pm (Feb – Oct) or 10am to 4pm (Nov to Jan). The reserve is located within Belfast Harbour Estate on Airport Road West. Two main entrances lead into the estate and are signposted along the A2 (Belfast to Holywood dual carriageway). From the Dee Street entrance, the reserve car park is two miles on the left. From the Holywood Exchange entrance, it is one mile on the right. The number 26/26A bus service from City Hall to Holywood Exchange runs past the reserve on weekdays, but there is no service at weekends. The Titanic Quarter and Holywood railway stations are located two miles from the reserve and the Connswater Greenway links East Belfast and the Harbour Estate via the Sam Thompson Bridge. Visit communitygreenway.co.uk/ trails for more information.
rspb.org.uk
As a charity, the RSPB is reliant on donations from members and supporters to help run this fantastic site, which is why they have introduced a small entry charge for non-RSPB members at Belfast WOW. £3 for adults and £1.50 for children and other concessions. To become an RSPB member - just ask one of the team at the reserve. You will then enjoy free access to Belfast WOW, plus all the other benefits that RSPB membership brings. For more information, please call the reserve directly on 028 9046 1458 or email belfast.lough@rspb.org.uk.

group of residents from Malone Park met in 1892 to discuss the formation of a rugby club and the result was Malone Football Club, later renamed in 1932 as Malone Rugby Football Club. The club played at several locations in the Balmoral vicinity of south Belfast during its early years. In 1936 Malone Rugby Football Club moved to premises with a single pitch at Gibson Park, Cregagh and a well-known club captain was Robert Blair (Paddy) Mayne who joined Malone RFC from QUB after touring South Africa with the British Lions in 1938 and won 6 caps for Ireland. He is also remembered for his well-documented exploits during World War Two when he won the D.S.O. and three bars. The tram lines had reached Gibson Park Avenue (previously known as ‘Daddy Winker’s Lane’) by 1898 but the line above Bell’s Bridge was abandoned in 1936 because of the poor surface. Passengers took a bus to connect with the Hillfoot Road. The boundary between the Belfast and Castlereagh Council areas was also reached here. OUR RESIDENT HISTORIAN AIDAN CAMPBELL WAS INSPIRED BY RECENT NEWS OF A LOCAL WAR HERO WHICH TAKES US ON THIS MONTHS HISTORICAL JOURNEY TO THE CREGAGH AREA
There was quite a bit of coverage recently in the local press about Lt Col Robert Blair (Paddy) Mayne, a great hero of World War ll, a native of Newtownards who also had a connection with the Cregagh area.
These were the days when Bell’s Bridge was a bridge over the Loop River (look to the right of the tram above) and before the roundabout was built. Note the cyclist to the far right with the large delivery basket on his bicycle and only a single car parked on the road. roads and avenues were named after First World War battles such as Somme, Hamel and Thiepval. There were several small shops in the locality including the post office at Everton Drive and Gilbert Wilson’s Hamel Stores at Hamel Drive. Local shops were a feature of life years ago before the advent of large supermarkets Although there is a close connection between George Best and football in the area, the game was previously played by Cregagh Amateurs Football Team who are pictured above in 1943. Twin brothers Eric and Jack Hay are standing in the back row. Most of the team came from the ex-servicemen’s houses in the region of Hamel Drive and their home pitch was on the grounds of the future Cregagh Estate. They played on land adjoining a farmhouse called Willowbrook and one of the farm sheds was used as a changing room. No hot water in those days! Cregagh Estate was built between 1945 and 1950 over an area of approximately 90 acres. Mount Merrion Avenue and Ladas Drive were newly built thoroughfares in the 1950s. Princess Elizabeth was due to open the Festival of Britain Exhibition at Montgomery Road in 1951 and was taken on a tour of

the new Northern Ireland Housing Trust estate at Cregagh which was described as ‘a model for public housing provision’. In 1960 Ulster’s first multi-storey flats were constructed on Cregagh Road at the junction with Mount Merrion Avenue and the two 11 storey, 100 feet high blocks, each contained 44 flats. The new flats were something of a tourist attraction and visitors could get a great view of the area from a raised observation stand provided by the building contractors. To mark the centenary of the Great Exhibition of 1851 it was decided that Great Britain, suffering the after-effects of the Second World War should celebrate the British way of life and that the Festival of Britain should be ‘a tonic to the nation’. Although the main venue for the Festival was to be a site beside the River Thames in London, there were to be a number of regional exhibition centres including the Ulster Farm and Factory Exhibition at Montgomery Road. The Belfast Exhibition site was opened to the public on 1st June 1951 and closed on 31st August 1951 with an attendance of 156,760 paying visitors twice as many as originally estimated. The building remains today on Montgomery Road at the junction with Alanbrook Road.

“WHY IT MATTERS WHAT GOVERNMENT WE HAVE IN EAST BELFAST” You may have noticed that there’s an election coming up. In fact, it may have been hard not to.
T
By Conservative Westminster Candidate, Neil Wilson www.neil4eastbelfast.com www.eastbelfastconservatives.com
he press is full of speculation about who will emerge victorious here in East Belfast but the real question is over who will be running the country come 8th May. After all, that’s what a General Election is really about. And ultimately there are two choices – Conservative leader David Cameron, or Labour leader Ed Miliband. The Conservatives have made great strides in rebuilding our economy. Remember where we were in 2010? Since then the UK economy has added 1.8 million new jobs. We’ve cut the deficit in half. 26 million people have had their income tax cut. The State Pension has increased by £950 a year.
14 Cedarhurst Rd, Belfast BT8 7RH T: 02890 693193 W: www.beechillinn.co.uk E: beechill.inns@btconnect.com
All of this is at risk from a Labour government that has plans for more tax, more debt and more reckless spending. This choice is just as relevant h ere as it is in England, Scotland or Wales. The decisions taken at Westminster affect all of our lives. While the Stormont organisations flock behind Labour’s plans for economic disaster, Conservative action has made a positive difference to people’s lives in East Belfast already. By scrapping fuel duty rises and the carbon floor tax we’ve saved the average person here about £400 a year. By scrapping the jobs tax for under-21s we’ve helped 150 young people back into work in East Belfast.
£200 million of extra PSNI funding ensures that we are safer. And by devolving Corporation Tax we are set unlock the potential of East Belfast, creating thousands of jobs. In contrast, the Stormont organisations achieve very little at Westminster, or at Stormont for that matter. They serve only to keep Northern Ireland marginalised within the UK. I want to change that. As your MP, East Belfast would win twice – from a Conservative government with a long term economic plan that is already working and from more influence at the centre of the UK, where we deserve to be. But votes for the Stormont organisations will only help Ed Miliband.

Eddie has been working from his studio in East Belfast for over 25 years now and has an amazing capability of capturing lost moments in time by way of portraiture. His life and times as a messenger boy when he was 15 years old and later in life as a welder has lead him to produce over 45 pieces of work for his up and coming show. The exhibition encapsulates both original oil paintings and oversized pencil sketches. One of the highlights of the show is a large piece

The exhibition is set to bring an insight into the lives of the people that worked their and the lost stories of ‘the yard’. Whalley Fine Art will also be publishing a catalogue to coincide with the opening of the Exhibition illustrating the paintings in the show and telling the stories of the folks that worked there. The catalogue will also be available to purchase through various outlets following the exhibition which is set to be one of the most exciting and thought provoking exhibitions to be held in Belfast over the past decade!
“
I worked at Harland and Wolf Shipyard as a welder for approximately five years (not long enough to call myself a shipyard man), but long enough for me to absorb a flavour of what it was all about, at least for the purpose of making a tribute in paint. Through most of the six decades of my life drawing has been the narrative thread joining everything together. The introduction of paint happened relatively recently; a mere thirty two years ago. My mistakes are numerous and the purist will have no difficulty spotting them. I make little attempt if any to subvert form, choosing instead to marshal eternal verities in the service of honest image making. These are the vignettes of my ordinary life.

George Best Belfast City Airport has teamed up with The MAC to offer their adopted schools behind the scenes access to the popular arts venue’s awe-inspiring galleries which showcase some of Northern Ireland’s finest creative artworks.

p to thirty P6 pupils from two of the airport’s adopted schools - St. Joseph’s Primary School and Victoria Park Primary School - were treated to a ‘Gallery Challenge’ workshop where they honed in on an inspiration of their choosing, be it theatre, painting, sculpture or dance, to develop their knowledge and technical skills. Led by local artists Katrina Sheena Smyth and Charlotte Bosanquet alongside The MAC’s education team, the children gained invaluable insight into how to recreate some of their favourite art forms and design their very own masterpiece. Paula Bittles from Belfast City Airport, said:“Belfast City Airport is committed to providing even the youngest members of our community with invaluable and memorable experiences to help expand and nourish their intellectual and social development. With that in mind, we are
absolutely delighted to be working with The MAC to provide these children which such a fabulous opportunity. It really is a once in a lifetime chance to work with such esteemed artists. The children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves over the last few days and are going back to school truly inspired by all of the incredible work they have seen. We would like to thank The MAC for partnering with us to deliver such a fun and informative programme for our adopted schools which will no doubt encourage the children to pursue their artistic talents even further.” After spending time in The MAC’s three galleries, the pupils listened to captivating stories written and submitted by primary schools students from across Northern Ireland for the Great MAC Writing Competition, an initiative designed to encourage children to write poetry and short stories from the perspective of a WW1 soldier. Clare Lawlor, Learning and Participation Officer at The MAC, said: “It has been a real pleasure to invite Victoria Park and St. Joseph’s Primary Schools to The MAC and give them behind the scenes access to our galleries, which we hope opened their eyes to the vibrant and intricate world of local art and theatre. Belfast has a very rich and diverse cultural heritage which we are extremely proud of and are passionate about celebrating. Local artists Katrina Sheena Smyth and Charlotte Bosanquet
were involved from the beginning, teaching the children the necessary skills involved in making their own creations and I would like to thank them for their kind support and helping to make the event a real success. It was a pleasure to work with Belfast City Airport on this project and give their adopted schools an experience which we hope they will remember for years to come.” Mrs Gillian McDougall, a teacher at Victoria Park Primary School, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to both Belfast City Airport and the entire team at The Mac for their warm hospitality and for giving the children a truly unforgettable experience. We have a great relationship with the airport and the pupils always have such a great time at the activity they help us to coordinate, especially when they can get stuck in and create something that’s entirely unique to them, like they have today. .” As part of the airport’s community engagement initiatives, the Belfast City Airport has invested more than £180,000 into a number of local groups and projects which aim to strengthen community relations, sport, social development, environmental responsibility and education through its Community Fund.

o Local Football Welders 2 • Ballymena United 3 MATCH REPORT BY : Fred Magee, Football Secretary H&W Welders www.weldersfc.com
So near and yet so far, the unthinkable was nearly there, our first ever Irish Cup semi final. With four regulars missing due to suspension and ineligibility it was considering the circumstances a tremendous performance. With a large crowd, the best ever witnessed at Tillysburn, the atmosphere was electric. The senior side attacked from the first whistle and Jenkins went close only to see Dougherty save the situation. Play moved from end to end and the home side were giving a good account of themselves. McClellan tested Allen in the visiting goal with a volley and the action was keeping everyone on their toes. With half time approaching the Welders were awarded a penalty, Middleton being brought down by Gardener and ace marksman Michael McClellan slotting it home. As the second half began it was the Welders felt hard done by when referee Ian McNabb brushed away their claims for a second McClellan goal. It was the Welders who scored their second and once again through McClellan, taking a great pass from Magennis and cooly going round the defence to make it two. Conditions were bad at this stage and the home fans were allowing themselves thoughts of a semi-final place. The Welders lost Craig Harris due to a knee injury and he proved to be a big loss where he had been a tower of strength. Only fifteen minutes on the clock, could the Welders make some more history, the excitement was rising as both sets of supporters yelled on their team. Drama then when Ballymena were awarded a penalty after ten minutes remaining and up stepped Tipton to take it only to see Michael Dougherty save it. Two goals in quick succession from the Braidmen, Boyce after seventy nine minutes and Cushley levelled the score. Ballymena had their heads up by now and it was a case of backs to the wall for the Welders. Extra time looked to be on the cards the winner came in the injury time period, Thompson notching the winner and sending them in the semi finals. A wonderful performance by the championship side, very unfortunate to lose and the home dressing room told the tale afterwards. Manager Gary Smyth was also very down but extremely proud of his team’ performance.

header of league and cup ties against Mark Snodden’s side. On the day the Whites were without manager Tommy Kincaid who was absent on a pre-planned trip to Old Trafford so it was coach Nick O’Neill who held the reins for what was an important game for both sides. After a fairly even opening period it was the visitors Dale Patton who had the first shot of the game when he tried an ambitious strike from outside the box which sailed wide and then shortly afterwards Distillery had their first chance when Sean Southam ran into the box before shooting into the side netting. Distillery, who went into the game still awaiting their first win of 2015, really needed a win but so did Dundela who will need to lift themselves quickly if they are to avoid relegation. Their need for urgency showed again as Matthew Ferguson let fly for the visitors but the ball just flashed wide of goal and this was a missed chance that they would regret as Distillery took the lead when the Duns ‘keeper Macauley Cairns came out and air kicked the ball leaving Lisburn Distillery striker Darren Smyth to turn the ball into an empty net on eighteen minutes. Shortly afterwards the Whites had a superb chance to make it 2-0 as Southam crossed for Martin Jones to smash the ball narrowly over the crossbar and then home ‘keeper Ryan McBride made a fantastic save to deny the away side an equaliser as his quick reactions tipped the ball away from Scott Collins. Distillery were forced into an early change when Colm Kirgan had to replace skipper Darren Nixon who had to leave the field of play due to a nasty gash on his hand which was to require hospital treatment. As the Whites reorganised Dundela missed a real good goal scoring opportunity as McBride closed down the attacker Nathan Jones the Distillery keeper being beaten by the attacker only for his shot to hit the crossbar on 33 minutes. Bradley Morton made a fantastic tackle to deny Dundela a leveller as Jamie Jackson ran through only to be denied by a last ditch tackle by the young defender. Half Time Lisburn Distillery 1-0 Dundela Dundela had a great chance to level in the second half when a cross was whipped in low to the backpost but David Gibson’s shot was well saved by McBride and then soon after this Distillery should have had the game wrapped up when Doyle ran through but rather than opting to pass to the unmarked Southam he chose to shoot goalwards only for Cairns to make a good save. Whites midfielder, and stand in skipper, Joe McDonnell was excellent in midfield all day as he made some crunching challenges and set up quick Distillery counter attacks and it was no surprise when he added the home sides second goal tapping in a cross from close range past Cairns. The visitors were struggling to pose any real threat on the home defence although Kyle Dillon volleyed over the crossbar when well placed to score.
Substitute Stephen Doyle made the points safe after he spectacularly left the advancing Cairns with no chance by placing the ball low into the corner of the net following a great through ball that beat the offside trap. 3-0 then to the hosts with the game fizzling out after the third goal with the Whites coming away with an important three points their first league points in 2015. LDFC Team v Dundela: McBride, Young, Nixon, Thompson, Morton, Kopyt, Jones, McIlhagga, Southam, McDonnell, Smyth Subs v Dundela: Kirgan (for Nixon), Doyle (for Smyth), O’Connor (for Southam), Short, White.
Albert Foundry 1 • Malachians 0 MATCH REPORT BY : Vincent McGovern www.malachiansfc.com After the bitter disappointment of Mals Clarence Cup exit last week, manager Devlin read the riot act to his squad at training on Thursday night and the result today was an excellent team effort and performance that pushed title contenders Albert Foundry all the way at Paisley Park, narrowly defeated 1-0 in atrocious conditions. Mals opted to start directly into a strong breeze with Sharpe switching to right back, O’Neill on the left and captain Hawkins and Hackett in the centre. With last week’s red card victims McHugh and Downey unavailable through suspension, there was a welcome return to midfield for Aldo Anderson with first team squad call ups for Light and Mulholland. McCourt and Donnan started upfront with McAtee, Light and McCart joining Anderson in the middle of the park. Corr and McDonald joined Mulholland on the bench. It was a cagey start from both sides as they struggled to come to terms with the wind and the first real chance fell to the home side on twenty minutes. McCart again carelessly relinquished possession on the edge of his own box and only a brave Magill save denied home striker Mark Picking. With the strong breeze behind Foundry enjoyed the lion’s share of possession with Mals keeper Magill punching and gathering well after a series of home corners but Mals still threatened on the counter, especially down the right flank with Sharpe, Anderson and Donnan all putting in commendable shifts. HT: Albert Foundry 0 Malachians 0 The second period opened with a resolute Mals side pressing the home side back into their own half as the strong first half breeze was replaced with incessant sheets of heavy rain off the Atlantic that left only the participants and a handful of diehard spectators and officials exposed. Foundry midfielder Aaron Harris was booked by referee Sean Nolan, who had a good game throughout, taking players from both teams aside and settling things down quietly and firmly where needed, yet still letting the game flow where possible, after a heavy challenge on Mals’ McAtee. McAtee then
weaved some of his infamous magic running through the heart of the home side’s midfield and only a well placed, defending backside denied him. Soon after McAtee was again denied by the diving hands of home keeper Stephen Cairnduff as Mals pressed. Mals had the ball in the net soon after with McCourt having a hand in it and seeing yellow from eagle eyed referee Nolan for his trouble. It was now Foundry’s turn to hit on the break at pace and on fifty seven minutes, against the run of play it must be said, they went in front. As the Mals defence claimed in vain for an offside decision that never came, Foundry’s Harris crossed from the right giving fellow striker Paul McCord an easy finish from close in. It was now a case of nip and tuck as the breeze died but the relentless rain continued. McDonald replaced McCourt adding some impetus to the Mals attack, whilst at the other end that man Harris again went close with a curled free that almost found the target. Substitutes Mulholland and Corr then entered as Mals pushed forward with Hackett a makeshift centre forward as Foundry were forced back but still countering at pace when the chance arose. In injury time Mals almost snatched a goal which would have given them the draw that their overall display deserved. A flighted ball into the box was headed powerfully goalwards by Hackett. However just when the ball looked to have looped over Cairnduff, a single this time legal hand appeared and Mals were denied by an impressive save from the Foundry keeper. So as everyone involved scuttled away to find sanctuary and a dry spot, Foundry, who last week inflicted a first league defeat on Ards Rangers by the same score at the same venue, claimed all three points in relieved fashion. For Malachians a much improved team performance saw them leave disappointed to have nothing to show for their efforts and commitment. Just a single defensive lapse proved the difference between the sides. Magill in goals was excellent once more as were the entire defence. The midfield competed well against an impressive Foundry four and Donnan led the line with distinction once again. The organisation, effort and commitment of his team will have pleased manager Devlin no doubt, if not the result, as his side prepare for the visit of Ardglass to the Stadium of Sand next Saturday.
