This annual awards ceremony, televised by UTV, seeks to honour all those who make a difference across NI.

A

tlast year’s event, overall Spirit of Northern Ireland winner was Coleraine man Willie Gregg, who has raised more than £250k to help children orphaned in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami in the Indian Ocean. This year organisers want your nominations for who you think deserves a Spirit of Northern Ireland Award, by selflessly serving others and being an inspiration to us all. The unique Northern Irelandwide search will give recognition to those whose good deeds have previously gone mostly unnoticed - ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things to help others and people whose uplifting stories of selfless acts will touch the hearts of all who read them. Specsavers Northern

Ireland Chairman, Sean McCauley, said, “We are delighted to sponsor the amazing Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards for the eighth consecutive year. I know I speak for all of the Specsavers staff across the province that each year we are humbled and inspired by the stories that are received and I’m sure this year will be no different. These awards celebrate all that is good about Northern Ireland and gives us the opportunity to champion incredible individuals who are so often modest and quiet about the huge difference they make to other peoples’ lives. Help us to recognise our local unsung heroes by sharing their stories before the closing date in March.” This year’s ten categories are: Unsung Hero, Overcoming Adversity, Spirit of

Oliver’s Unveil New Casual Lunch Menu FOOD & DRINK Oliver’s Restaurant in Ballyhackamore has launched a new casual lunch menu, encouraging us to start the new year as we mean to go on, and making time to enjoy lunch. www.oliversknock.com

P

eter explains; “We opened in May 2016, and since then, we have had positive feedback, a healthy evening trade and are welcoming in our locals for a hot cup of coffee on a cold day. “Now, we’re hoping to see more visitors come through the door for that lunch experience that they may think only exists in the city centre. We’re dedicated to serving delicious dishes, which come out of the kitchen quick enough to enjoy during the lunch hour, but without

that feeling of being rushed.” Fruit and vegetables from Evergreen, Abernethy Butter, fresh seafood from Ewings, Oliver’s own and Yellow Door fresh baked bread, Carnbrooke meat and Young Buck cheese from Newtownards all appear on the menu, creating snacks and starters such as Irish mussel and crab claw hot pot, Thai chilli beef, and mains such as 66-day salt aged Co. Down Hereford ribeye, and Carnbrooke Butcher’s cut sausage with pork, apple, black pudding and mash.

PROFILE: Oliver’s Restaurant is situated in the heart of Ballyhackamore and provides a casual dining experience. Ingredients are fresh, in season and locally sourced from their suppliers.

On the side, diners will find truffle and parmesan fries, seasonal veg and the local favourite, champ. Starters begin at £5, and a main can be enjoyed from £11.50. Peter continued; “Our food is down to earth and hearty, but made with finesse by Chef Thomas Wightman (trained by Michael Dean), and his team of experienced cooks in our open kitchen. Ballyhackamore is a thriving village which experiences spectacular evening trade throughout the weekend, so we’re hoping more

foodies will welcome a visit to the area during the week and sample our new lunch menu while they’re here!” The outlet also has a range of signature cocktails, created by some of the best in the business, including head bar man, Christopher McQuillan, whose experience ranges from some of the best bars in the city. Belfast – the focus is entirely on having fun and challenging yourself to try something different.” Since doors opened late December, the course has exceeded all initial targets, welcoming visitors of all ages over a three week period. Scott continued: “Offering a truly immersive experience through the distinctive theme, the 36 golf-holes at The Lost City are suitable for ages

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON THE DEMENTIA REGISTER IN NI HAS RISEN FROM 9,550 TO 13,617 IN THE LAST 10 YEARS.

Less than a few months after it’s official opening, Palmerston Residential Care Home in Belfast (9/17 Palmerston Road, Belfast BT4 1QA, Northern Ireland) has scooped two prestigious Dementia Care awards for its “Magical Memory Garden”.

500 TICKETS

On Sunday 14th January over 34 community groups from across Belfast enjoyed a day out at leading tourist attraction, Titanic Belfast, as part of its NI Citizens’ Day.

T

he garden is the first garden of its kind in Northern Ireland and features a number of reminiscence areas. Palmerston residents and visitors to the garden can visit the on-site caravan and recall family “days out” or car enthusiasts can spend time in the car port, which offers the opportunity for “tinkering”,

polishing and cleaning the car. The space can also be used for simply sitting in the car and listening to the radio. There is also a large garden shed, which is home to the ‘Men in Sheds’ project, and a dedicated pet’s corner with rabbits and chickens that provides the opportunity to care for animals. Finally, if quiet escape is the preference the Secret Garden

provides a serene, secluded space for reflection. Mrs Geraldine Gilpin, Chief Executive of Abbeyfield & Wesley Housing Association, which owns and manages Palmerston Care Home, welcomes the awards and discusses the Magical Memory Garden: “We are thrilled that the Magical Memory Garden has been recognised at these award ceremonies which are designed to promote best practice in the field of dementia care. When we were creating the garden we wanted a magical space for residents, their families and friends, and one that can also be used by people in the community with dementia and their carers. “For people living with dementia it is important to stimulate different senses. They may forget where they are living in time and place, but they can recognise and experience aspects of a garden – the open sky, sounds of the outside environment, and trees blowing in the wind. This is a freedom we can all connect with.”

Mrs Gilpin continues: “The Magical Memory Garden’s pathways and areas flow from one to another with no dead ends at that would be a barrier for someone with dementia. It is important to recognise that Palmerston is about creating different environments for different people. Everybody is an individual and everybody’s dementia is different. Each of our residents is at a different stage of dementia and needs a different stage of care and assistance. It is important to have a range of activities and solutions for these various stages, so we have a caravan to remember “days out”, a car for the men to polish and sit in, areas for growing vegetables, a farmyard area, and quiet spaces.” The organisers of the National Dementia Care Awards at Doncaster Racecourse in Yorkshire added: “The judges chose Palmerston Care Home because of their excellent standards of accessibility, ownership, safety and inclusivity. Its innovation in catering for needs, wishes and expectations are outstanding, resulting in a garden that is used all year round come rain or shine. The bar has been raised at Palmerston.” The Magical Memory Garden has been funded by The Alpha Programme, Groundwork NI, Belfast City Council and Belfast City Airport. The number of people on the dementia register in Northern Ireland has risen from 9,550 to 13,617 in the last 10 years. Palmerston Residential Dementia Care Home was built in 2009 to provide care for 39 residents. Situated in East Belfast, the home is run by Abbeyfield & Wesley Housing Association, a not-for-profit organisation. 34 Community Groups Enjoy Titanic Belfast on Citizens’ Day COMMUNITY Titanic Belfast opened its doors to help locals beat the January blues by giving away complimentary tickets. www.titanic-foundation.org

T

he complimentary tickets were for local residents on the 14th January 2018 to enjoy the Titanic Experience free-of-charge. The visitor attraction tells the story of the RMS Titanic, from her conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to her famous maiden voyage and tragic end, as well the role of SS Nomadic, the last remaining White Star ship in the world. Titanic Foundation, working with Titanic Belfast, secured an additional 500 tickets to be circulated to the local community, which included a range of groups across Belfast and Northern Ireland: RNIB, Youth Initiatives, Belfast Lough Sailability, Cregagh & Belvoir Community groups, Upper Springfield Development Trust,

to name but a few. These groups consisted of people with disabilities, families, young people, volunteers and senior citizens. Kerrie Sweeney, Chief Executive of Titanic Foundation, said, “Citizens’ Day is a wonderful initiative and a fantastic way for people to engage in something with family & friends or their community group, and enjoy it whatever their age. We have had some lovely feedback highlighting how much they enjoyed the exhibition, learning about their heritage and the characters from their local community. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to offer a unforgettable 5 star experience that is accessible for everybody.” Stephen Tate, Community Development Officer from Belfast City Council highlighted, “Volunteers

from Belfast City Council Tall Ships and Belfast Lough Sailability had a great time at Citizens’ Day. To be able to follow the journey of the Titanic from its build in Belfast, to its final destination in the North Atlantic ocean and the people who were associated with her, from the designers, ship builders and passengers. It was a captivating experience from start to finish.” Judith Owens, Chief Executive of Titanic Belfast, said, “At Titanic Belfast, we have continued to go from strength to strength, having been awarded the title of World’s Leading

Tourist Attraction at the prestigious World Travel Awards last year and experiencing our busiest day and month to date. We know we couldn’t have done it without local support. Tickets to our Citizens’ Day was our way of showing our appreciation and we were pleased to extend this with Titanic Foundation to local community groups. We hope the local community groups and our other local guests enjoyed the Titanic Experience.” Titanic Foundation helps preserve Belfast’s maritime and industrial heritage, for more information visit www.titanic-foundation.org.

And with the NI Science Festival inspiring our emerging talents, who knows what these young people will pioneer in STEM professions in the future? “I’m particularly looking forward to hearing from Colonel Chris Hadfield on why we should dream the impossible. It’s fantastic that he’s returning to Belfast to inspire our budding scientists and astronomers.” For more information about NI Science Festival events and to purchase tickets, visit www. nisciencefestival.com and keep up to date with the festival on Facebook and Twitter.

It’s a sad fact of life that our animal companions don’t live as long as us. For many of us, our pets are well-loved family members and when it comes time to say goodbye it can be an extremely tough and emotional time.

Pet Advice

Saying Goodbye To Your Pet EUTHANASIA As vets, we may see the same playful puppy or kitten all the way from their first health check to the end of their life, and we take our role in helping you through this process very seriously.

H

ere at Ashwood, when the time comes, we are able to arrange to visit you at your home or arrange a quiet time at the surgery. When you arrive, whether at the time or at a prior time to talk to us first, you will be shown into one of our consulting rooms where a vet will be with you and explain what happens and recommend the kindest way for your pet. You will be asked whether you would like to take your pet home with you to bury or if you would prefer individual or group cremation. If your pet is individually cremated your pet’s ashes will be returned shortly. There is a very appropriate choice of how the ashes are returned, with options including engraved oak tribute boxes, engraved photo frames, gently interlaced cushions and more options as well. You are more than welcome to stay with your pet throughout the procedure, or some folk who know us prefer to leave them with us and not stay - either option is absolutely fine and exactly the same thing

happens either way. In many cases, a little sedation is given in advance of the procedure so that your pet is very calm and relaxed. The anaesthetic drug used (pentobarbitone) is simply a strong anaesthetic, closely related to a drug that was until recently used for general anaesthesia, but a stronger version. Our vet will usually ask one of our veterinary nurses to be there too. A little bit of hair is shaved from the forearm area and the injection is quietly made into the arm vein. The whole process is calm and peaceful - your pet simply drifts into a deepening anaesthetic sleep from which he won’t wake up, and passes away in their sleep within a minute of the injection. After the procedure, we gently snuggle your pet in a blanket and you are able to stay for as long as you wish - there is no hurry. You may wish to settle the bill before you go, some people prefer to pay the bill in advance, or if you have selected private cremation and ashes are being returned, we are more than happy to settle up then.

Could you provide love, fun and security until adulthood for a child who is unable to live with their birth parents? Belfast Health and Social Care (HSC) Trust together with South Eastern HSC Trust is holding an information evening, ’Til I Grow Up, on Thursday 22 February from 7-9pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Belfast. The event is open to members of the public to inform them about the need for long term foster families for a number of children until they reach adulthood. In Northern Ireland, the vast number of children in care live with foster carers. For many it is hoped they will return to live with their birth family but a small number of children may never be able to live with their birth parents. Both Trusts recognise the need for security and stability for children in care and ideally a permanent home to give them the best chance in life.

’Til I Grow Up takes place from 7 – 9pm on Thursday 22 February at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Belfast. It is necessary to register for the event, either by calling 028 9504 0057 or emailing mairead.sloan@setrust.hscni.net. We would love to hear from you!

With best wishes, Patrick

Belfast Health and Social Care Trust caring supporting improving together

Could YOU give me love, fun and security . . .

’til I grow up? Throughout the Belfast and South Eastern Trust areas there are children of all ages who may never be able to live with their birth parents. They need a permanent home for the rest of their childhood. If you are resilient, flexible and have the energy and time to care for the demands of a child come along to our information evening to find out more. Foster carers receive financial allowances; in some cases a fee may also be available.

For anyone interested in fostering, Beverley Ringland, social worker advises, “Fostering is a serious commitment to a child or young person. We would say to people ‘don’t rule yourself out’ before talking to us. However, do consider whether you will have the time to care for a child or children, whether you will be able to work well with agencies, schools and other professionals and whether you can commit to caring for a child for the rest of their childhood.”

It is natural to grieve after losing your pet, and you are welcome to talk to any of us about this, or the Blue Cross has a dedicated pet bereavement line with trained people to talk to which can be very helpful. It can be reached on 0800 096 6606.

Do I have to attend an assessment for Employment Support Allowance?

Carlie Martin, Better Off Families Adviser at East Belfast Independent Advice Centre provides information about common advice queries. Would you like to Volunteer with EBIAC and make a real difference in your community? We have opportunities to volunteer in the following roles, Receptionist, Administrator and Adviser. Please contact Gerard Morgan 55 Templemore Avenue Belfast BT5 4NT Telephone 028 90 735690

ASK THE ADVISER

“I am 55 years old and I had to give up my job ago due to a car accident, which left me permanently disabled. I claim Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance. I recently got a letter telling me that I had to attend an assessment for Employment Support Allowance. I have to use a wheelchair when I go out, do I have to attend this assessment?

Y

es, if you receive notification to have an assessment for Employment Support Allowance then you cannot ignore this. The Department for Communities will also contact you in the near future to tell you that Disability Living Allowance is ending and inviting you to claim Personal Independence Payment. Disability Living Allowance is ending for people aged 16 to 64. You will most likely have to attend an assessment for this benefit also. If you receive a date that is unsuitable, you can call to rearrange. If you are unable to

travel to an assessment centre for either of these assessments, you can request the assessment to take place at your home. You can also choose to have someone you trust present at your assessment for support. It is important not to ignore any of the letters you receive with regard to your benefits as your benefit may stop. We can help you to understand any correspondence, help you complete forms and advise you with regard to claim processes and assessments. We also provide advice and representation to help you to dispute any benefit decisions.

of Desi McIntyre

I probably heard this expression used in relation to motor vehicles in the Ulster countryside rather than in the town. It got me thinking about cars in my younger years and my father was always very keen on the Hillman brand which like so many other old makes is no longer in existence. But what about some cars over the years in East Belfast?

W

illie Bruce’s wee Austin 7 car (pic 1) is parked outside his parent’s house at 158 Larkfield Road, known as ‘Dorothy Villas’ in around 1930 in the days before the Sydenham by-pass was constructed. It was located not far from the BCDR railway line and Victoria Park. Dorothy Villas was recently demolished and replaced by more modern housing. Willie’s father William was a tailor at high-class men’s outfitter’s Stringer & Co based at Wellington Place, Belfast. William was also Clerk of Sessions at Strand Presbyterian Church and he built a tennis court for them in his extensive back garden in 1937. A contemporary news clipping also reports that the airship ‘Hindenberg’ was setting off on its maiden voyage to New York, where it tragically crashed. The wooden tennis pavilion was dismantled in the 1940s and new houses were built on the land.

2. Pat Gallaugher ‘revving- up’ at the Craigantlet Hill-Climb in the 1930s. He is behind the wheel of a model known as a Riley Nine Lynx. A very fashionable car it was once described as ‘A touring sports car with the pace, agility of a feline’ (whew!). Notice the RAC marshall to the right in full military type regalia with officer style peaked cap. No crash helmets for racing drivers back then. In the 1950s the Gallaughers acquired Miss Lynn’s wee shop on Knock Road called ‘Highway Newsagency’ opposite PSNI headquarter, Brooklyn next to the Belfast & County Down Railway station. 3. Looking along Bridge End towards Short Strand in 1950 and the car approaching the camera has just passed the Sirocco Works. It is a 1948 Hillman Minx Phase III with an 1185cc 4-cylinder engine capable of an impressive 70 mph. Notice the overhead tram/trolleybus cables and the two horse-drawn vehicles in sight. The Victorian terrace to the left has

since been demolished for road widening. The premises include J. Little, hairdresser at 6 Bridge End alongside, at 8 Bridge End, Bridge End Post Office then a confectionery shop and a restaurant (later the well-known ‘Ken’s Hot Food Bar’) and a very close look reveals the ubiquitous Coca-Cola projecting sign over the door. 4. May Nicolls stands in the front driveway of the family home ‘Rosemount’ (now demolished) at 2 Rosemount Park, Ballygowan Road. She is standing beside a very grand 1959 Oldsmobile two door coupe known as a SceniCoupe and it is 1961. May’s uncle Bertie Nicolls had visited Belfast on holiday from Canada and brought the car along too. It was quite a sight in Belfast. Notice that it is a left-hand drive. A large house called ‘Glen View’ is in the background and the electricity station on Glen Road at Braniel is the white building whilst Brentwood Park is in the distance to the far left.

Pat Gallaugher ‘revvingup’ at the Craigantlet Hill-Climb in the 1930s. He is behind the wheel of a model known as a Riley Nine Lynx. A very fashionable car it was once described as ‘A touring sports car with the pace, agility of a feline’ (whew!).

5. Singer Bob Dylan’s lyrics included the words ‘the times they are a-changing’. The white car is the popular Ford Sierra 1.8L in this mid-1990s scene. UK multiple supermarket groups moved into Northern Ireland in the late 1990s and acquired the familiar local supermarket names of Stewarts, Crazy Prices and Wellworths. In February 1996 planning permission was granted for a new Sainsbury’s store on the Supermac site and it opened in March 1997. The Sainsbury annual report later noted that the store was ‘trading far above expectations’. 6. Nuala Campbell left and twin brother Aidan Campbell, right (that’s me) at The Vicarage, Glenavy in 1960. Nuala’s car was an Austin Cambridge and it was stolen from our new home at 51 Ballygomartin Road sometime in 1962. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Nuala’s car should immediately notify the PSNI. I have received no further updates since I first published this appeal in 2008!

Artful Ageing Gets Carers Switched Onto Radio CARING

An innovative 10-week arts project is offering care groups and organisations in East Belfast the opportunity to create and share two radio dramas based on their caring experiences.

D

elivered by EastSide Arts and supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Arts & Older People Programme the project called Artful Ageing aims to break down isolation and loneliness and promote well-being amongst older residents. The radio dramas will be developed through an interactive workshop delivered by east Belfast-based writer and radio dramatist Jan Carson. It will include story development, writing, recording and editing of two short dramas exploring issues and experiences related to being a carer. The two radio dramas and a bespoke tool kit will be available to share with other care groups and organisations, with the hope that it will help to provide an opportunity to begin

conversations about the positive and negative aspects of caring for another person. EastSide Arts’ Artful Ageing workshops will also run from January to June at a variety of east Belfast venues including EastSide Visitor Centre. These free drop-in classes are for older members of the community and will feature a range of workshops including crochet, ceramics, textile art, painting and digital fabrication. Looking forward to delivering the radio workshops, east Belfast writer Jan Carson said: “ The Artful Ageing project is a wonderful initiative by EastSide Arts with support from Arts Council of Northern Ireland and their Arts & Older People Programme. share their experiences for caring for another person – whether this may be positive or negative. The radio workshop will be a fantastic platform to capture these conversations and I am very much looking forward to working with the carers as well as to see the outcome of the ten-week course.” Lorraine Calderwood, Arts & Older People Programme Officer, explained how the Arts and Older People Programme is continuing to making a huge difference to people’s lives, saying: “The links between creative

expression through participation in the arts, and improved wellbeing, are now well established. The Arts Council’s Arts & Older People Programme has evidenced how successful the arts are in making a positive impact on older people, tackling social issues such as isolation and social exclusion. With the help of professional artists these projects give a much needed voice to our older citizens through high quality arts interventions and the Arts Council is delighted to support the EastSide Arts Artful Ageing Programme.”

Unveiled: 20th Belfast Children’s Festival Line Up

BOOK NOW!

FAMILY ADVENTURES A monumental walk-in sculpture, the world’s smallest action hero, penguins, a 4-legged clothes monster, a man with a chocolate beard, and a boy on a quest to make friends with a star are snapshot of some of the delights that will appear at this year’s 20th Annual Belfast Children’s Festival where the theme is family.

F

rom Friday 9 to Wednesday 14 March, more than 110 events will take place in 14 locations across the city. Belfast Children’s Festival has become one of the largest children’s arts festivals on the island of Ireland and the UK, attracting just under 30,000 people last year. Eibhlín de Barra, Director Young at Art, unveiled the packed programme at Belfast City Hall. ‘The 2018 Belfast Children’s Festival celebrates our 20th birthday in style, with a wide and wonderful mix of theatre, dance, comedy, music, visual arts and literature for all the family. From the exquisite Horses from world-renowned kabinet k, to the madcap exploits of Egg-tion Hero, from Branar’s beautiful adaptation of Oliver Jeffers How to Catch a Star, to the heart-warming tale of Penguins, and the welcome return to Belfast of Architects of Air’s magnificent Luminarium, there really is something for everyone. And on top of it all we’re throwing a giant birthday party across the festival weekend, so come on down and join in!”

Young at Art are delighted to be presenting several UK and Irish Premieres, including Horses, Getting Dressed, Penguins, Egg-tion Hero and Sensescapes. Horses, by worldrenowned kabinet k and hetpaleis (Belgium) is a dance performance with a cast of 5 children and 5 adults. It playfully explores how we want to be a grown-up and yet remain a child. It reminds us that we can all be vulnerable; nevertheless we learn to trust and count on each other. From 1pm-4pm on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 March the Big Botanic Birthday Bash will be jam-packed with fun family activities including free children’s art workshops, theatre & music performances including Eggtion Hero from Maas Theater en Dans (Netherlands), Dance Exposed from Maiden Voyage Dance, and Northern Ireland Opera’s Little Lullabies, drumming workshops, Sow & Grow workshops and much much more. The Miracoco Luminarium (Architects of Air) is a monumental walk-in sculpture that invites visitors of all ages to explore the dazzling maze of

winding paths and soaring domes. Inspired by natural forms, geometric solids, Islamic and Gothic architecture the Miracoco Luminarium promises an unforgettable sensory experience of light, sound and colour. It is open 12pm-6pm from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 March and is set to be the most photographed structure in Belfast that weekend. The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is principal funder of Young at Art, and thanks to public and National Lottery funds, Young at Art is able to programme and deliver a wide range of artistic content, education & engagement programmes and professional development throughout the year. Based on the beloved book by award-winning Belfast author Oliver Jeffers, Branar Téatar do Pháistí (Ireland) present How To Catch a Star. Audiences are in for a real treat, as this production combines world-class puppetry, a magical soundtrack,

Featuring live music, dance and animation, this warm and engaging story explores friendship, acceptance and the ever-changing definition of what makes a family. Humanitarian education

Red Cross joins the dots for hospital patients & lonely people.

The first time Eva, from East Belfast came into contact with the Red Cross, she was being helped home after a lengthy stay in the Ulster hospital. The humanitarian charity, which is probably better known for its work overseas, is increasingly making a difference to people right here in East Belfast. Eva, who is in her eighties, is one of those people.

I

had no idea the Red Cross did this kind of work. The hospital was so busy, I was really aware of the fact that there were probably other people needing my bed on the ward. When the nurse said the Red Cross could take me home, I thought, my goodness! I felt ready to go home although I was a bit worried about how I was going to manage as I would be on my own for long periods of each day. Eva was one of the first patients to be helped by an innovative ‘assisted discharge’ project at the Ulster hospital which helps people get home from hospital faster. The Red Cross provides suitable patients with transport and a dedicated member of staff to make sure they have everything they need in terms of their pharmacy prescriptions and mobility aids. They’ll also nip out and make sure the patient has some basic shopping in and that the heating’s turned on. And they’ll call and check the following day to see how the patient is getting on back at home. During her discharge from hospital, Eva mentioned to her Red Cross worker that she’d feel quite lonely at home after being in the busy hospital environment for so long. That’s how she was referred on to another ground-breaking Red Cross service – called Community Connectors. Elizabeth Boyd, who heads up the Community Connector service, which is run by the Red Cross but has been funded by the Co-op, explains; “Loneliness is a very real issue in East Belfast. It isn’t always easy to spot as people don’t always like to admit they are feeling lonely, but it can have a really detrimental effect on people’s health and wellbeing. Our community connector volunteers give a couple of hours of their time each week to link in with a lonely person and to help them get a little bit of the social life they previously enjoyed, back again.” One of Eva’s main social activities

every day is visiting her son, who lives in a local care home. They both enjoy and rely on Eva’s daily visits and that’s something that was causing her a great deal of anxiety on discharge from hospital. “I wasn’t going to be able to drive for a while so it was great not only to have the company of my Red Cross volunteer but she also drove me to visit my son until I was able to drive myself again.” Of course it’s not just Red Cross clients who get a great deal out of their relationship with a volunteer. The benefits of volunteering, which brings a sense of purpose to so many people’s lives, is well documented. Cliona isn’t your typical 27 year old. Originally from Sligo, the bubbly English Literature graduate who moved to Belfast when she came to study at Queen’s, is more than happy to spend her free time ‘hanging out’ with older people, people who’re a bit depressed, or who are struggling with their mental health. One of the Red Cross’ first sign-ups for its Community Connector project, Cliona volunteers for a few hours a week to help lonely people in East Belfast, where she lives, get more out of life. “I’ve a busy life but I did have a bit of free time in the evenings and I thought volunteering would be a good way to meet people, get out there and do some good in the world.” Cliona initially googled to find volunteering opportunities in her local community. She thought the Red Cross sounded interesting and easy to get involved with as it’s totally neutral and not affiliated to any particular church. And she felt she could empathise with people who didn’t have a great social network and were maybe feeling a bit isolated; “I didn’t know anyone myself when I moved to Belfast. Being a student can be quite lonely at the start as you’re in a big group of people but you might

It’s so worth the time you put into it, honestly. I keep recommending it to my friends. It’s just so fulfilling and worthwhile.

PICTURED: Cliona, who works full time and is also busy planning her wedding, spends a couple of hours each week visiting a client whom she’s been partnered with by her Red Cross coordinator, Lorna.

The Red Cross is currently searching for new Community Connector volunteers in East Belfast. If you are interested in giving a few hours of your time – as much or as little as suits you and your life – get in touch with Elizabeth on 07710 711170 or email ConnectBelfast@redcross.org not connect with them that easily and you’ve also all the pressure of having to suddenly be an adult and take on those grownup responsibilities. I guess that gave me some empathy for lonely people. It’s certainly a big topic in the media these days so I was probably conscious of it as a social problem too, at some level.” Cliona, who works full time and is also busy planning her wedding, spends a couple of hours each week visiting a client whom she’s been partnered with by her Red Cross coordinator, Lorna. “At first I was a bit nervous about going to someone’s home, but Lorna really supported me and I had lots of training. I’ll get to know the person a bit by chatting with them and then gradually see if they’d like to go out somewhere for a walk, or a run in the car, or just a cup of coffee in a local café. and my mileage so it costs me nothing but my time, which I’m more than happy to give.’ ‘Sometimes people who’ve been spending a lot of time alone can lose their confidence and get very anxious about going out. It makes such a difference to them to have someone to go with, a friendly ear and someone who’s not going to judge them or push them too hard. I take things at their pace and offer a bit of gentle encouragement when required. I was going to a knitting group with one client and I thought she was a bit bored so we got her on to some more complicated and challenging patterns and that made a huge difference to her confidence.”And as for what Cliona gets out of it all? Well on that point she’s very clear! “It’s so worth the time you put into it, honestly. I keep recommending it to my friends. It’s just so fulfilling and worthwhile.

STORY TELLERS

Men Behind Glass WW1 Portraits Brought To life LOOKING BACK As 2018 marks the centenary of the end of WW1, Campbell College has launched a year-long project entitled ‘The Men Behind the Glass’ in partnership with the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) which will bring to life the stories of 126 pupils and one member of the school’s teaching staff who died in service during the First World War.

T

he project commences with a series of Primary Schools’ creative workshops which are taking place in East Belfast and beyond throughout January. The project, “The Men Behind the Glass” www.menbehindtheglass. co.uk, which has received funding

from the Heritage Lottery Fund, was prompted by the photographic portraits of the fallen which have lined the wood-panelled walls of Campbell College’s Central Hall for decades. Realising that the photographs were starting to deteriorate, the College contacted PRONI to seek advice on

The winning teams and the runners-up from across the heats will now compete in a Grand Final at Titanic Belfast on 20th February 2018. Siobhan McCartney, Titanic Belfast’s Learning and Outreach Manager, commented, “The search for Northern Ireland’s best Key Stage 3 STEM quiz team is well and truly on! preserving them before they were lost forever. This in turn sparked the idea for a wider historical project, not only to restore the images, but to uncover and share the real-life stories of the teenage boys and young men “behind the glass”. The year-long programme will include schools outreach and curriculum activity, creative exchange events with Germany, community engagement, arts events and the development of an archive website. The activity will culminate in the unveiling of a collaborative archive exhibition on Remembrance Weekend in November 2018 - an exhibition which will then tour various venues throughout the Island of Ireland. Campbell College Headmaster, Robert Robinson MBE said, “Thanks to the support of Heritage Lottery Fund and PRONI we have been able to put together a really exciting range of activities that will open our archive to everyone and allow us to work in partnership with local Primary and Secondary Schools, local history associations, community groups, arts groups and many more. This is about paying respect to our Old Campbellians - the men and boys we lost and telling their

stories. It is also about connecting these stories with our lives today and involving as many people as possible in the process. Through the digital side of this project we hope to open up the conversation to the many corners of Ireland - where lives were lost. 100 years on and it is more important than ever that we never forget.” Leading the Primary School workshop, Creative Engagement Co-ordinator, Michelle Young said, “Today, these P7 pupils have been introduced to the story of one pupil, whose story has been recovered through archived letters written home from the battlefield in Northern France. Through role-play and art, the 11 year olds have been given an insight into the lives of local teenagers who, at that time, volunteered to go to war and were actively encouraged to do so by their proud and patriotic families. Little did they know the horrors they would face. It’s gritty stuff but the young people have been really captivated by the storyline and it has definitely brought the story to life for them.” For anyone who has a story to tell or would like to get involved please visit www.menbehindtheglass.co.uk.

illy stepped into a boxing club with the sole aim of being able to defend himself from others in the school yard. The sport captured his imagination and he was the first Irish man ever to win four world kickboxing titles at four different weights. He now runs Prokick Gym in the heart of East Belfast where his teaching and coaching instils truth, discipline and respect – traits which perfectly sum Billy up.

Health If Your Workout Didn’t Burn Any Calories Would You Still Do It? Health & Fitness

ADVICE

This was a poll that I posted on my Instagram page and I was completely shocked by the results. A huge 53% of people said they would not exercise if it didn’t burn any calories, and quite frankly I find that statistic horrifying!

W

e should exercise because it’s good for our bodies, it’s good for our minds, and the endorphins it helps to release can make you feel on top of the world! We should not exercise because we have to, or we feel we need too. I believe we should love moving our bodies, after-all, we are very lucky to be able to. There isn’t just one type of exercise, there are a million; it’s just about finding the exercise that you like to do. You don’t need to prove yourself to anyone or anything. It’s all about understanding yourself, your lifestyle and your responsibilities. If you find exercise a struggle or you just loathe it why not ask yourself these 6 questions!

New year, new you? Nope not here!

“ “

26

No1: What are your goals? Think about what your actually training for. Have you a goal or challenge in mind that you would like to complete? Hate running? Then don’t do it unless you are wanting to run a marathon or have set a running fitness goal! No2: Can you separate your fitness goals from your weight loss goals? We shouldn’t be in the mindset that the only thing exercise is good for is weight loss! There are many more benefits than losing a few digits on the scale. A happy heart, a happy head. Losing a few lbs is just a positive side affect. No3: Does your exercise program incorporate more than 1 training benefit? Cross fit is a mix of strength and stretching, yoga trains the body and

Just new year, let’s start working on what we already got.

mind, etc. My programmes develop you as a whole person working on mindset as well as your body. You should be able to run, jump, swim and lift comfortably, as well as developing your mind, and being able to focus on yourself. No4: Are you just training your muscles or training your whole self? Are you just focused on lifting weights, do you just mindlessly run? Try focusing on your body as a whole be it breathing, stretching, coordination, balance and not forgetting those joints. Look after your whole body. You only get one! No5: Does your training schedule fit your life schedule? Does your training fit around your life, job, children, pets or just your general being? Is it stressing you out trying to fit it all in? If so just take your time and relax; do a workout at home, go for a walk with a friend instead of going

for that coffee and cake date. Exercise should de-stress you, not stress you out. Trying different things will help you to find what works for you! No6: Does your training programme carry over into your daily life? Are you aiming for a triathlon? No? Then you don’t need to be running, cycling or swimming for miles on end. Are you a power lifter? If not you don’t need to be throwing around 100kgs in the gym. Instead of trying to prove anything to anyone decide what you want to do. And make a suitable plan to get yourself there! Want to get stronger? Great then get a programme sorted that will get you there, want to do a handstand? Perfect then plan the steps needed to get there. The more your training program improves how you think, feel, and move in your daily life, the more likely you’ll be to stick with it.

Do you want to: • Improve Your eating habits • Build your motivation • Work on your confidence • Feel healthier • Improve your fitness • Or just generally work on being a more Happy, Healthy, Confident person? Then contact me for the low down on my new training programme which is NOT solely based on just losing weight. I want you to feel better in every aspect of your life, it’s not just about what the scales tell you!

Visual Inspiration Optical Advice

I have recently been reading some interesting stories of individuals who are determined not to let their visual impairment prevent them from being successful in their field.

41 Comber Rd Dundonald BT16 2AA Telephone 028 9048 6222

While we should value our vision and always take care of our sight, if we encounter challenges with our sight some day, then it does not need to limit what we do.

A

ctor June Brown, who you may know better as Dot Cotton (or Dot Branning) in Eastenders has been playing a character who has been experiencing vision problems. She revealed in 2015 that she has macular degeneration herself and this was then written into her part. The episodes have shown how she became isolated and depressed until she sought help, started to receive treatment and accepted support from those around her. In this story it was the GP who referred her, but often it is a visit to the optician that sets this process in motion. Academy award winner, Dame Judi Dench is well known to us for her many film and TV roles, including ‘M’ the head of MI6 in the most recent James Bond films. In 2012 she announced that she has age related macular degeneration but intended to keep working. “I’m not going to make it something that is going to stop me,” she said. The change she made was to request that her movie script for Spectre was supplied in larger print and she is still appearing on our screens at 83 years of age. For Radio 4 Archers fans you may be interested to know that the actor who plays the character Jazzer, is blind. Ryan Kelly says, “It has never

been a problem, it is what it is.” It is fascinating to learn that he must memorise the scripts as the sensitive microphones would pick up the sound if he was running his fingers over braille. Through voice acting he has created the illusion that he is sighted and so can steal cars and ride motorbikes, which he could not do with his guide dog in real life! In the sporting world there are numerous inspiring examples and we will see many of these on our TV screens at the upcoming Winter Paralympics. After Kelly Gallacher from Northern Ireland won Britain’s first ever Winter Paralympic gold medal in 2014 in Sochi, this time around it will be an English sightimpaired skier, Millie Knight aiming for gold next month in Pyeongchang in South Korea. Just the thought of skiing with impaired vision is absolutely terrifying to me but these men and women with limited vision fly down the slopes at tremendous speed and their sight limitations are not going to hold them back. Maybe there are lessons there for all of us. While we should value our vision and always take care of our sight, if we encounter challenges with our sight some day, then it does not need to limit what we do.

The Best Hair Colour Trends of 2018 By Sabrina Robinson | SR Hairdressing

We’re a month into 2018 and it’s already clear that some trends for the year are developing , when it comes to hair colour. Already clients are embracing warmer, richer tones, going for unconventional shades, and also were making subtle changes to really give their natural features a boost.

Caramel Ombré This is one of my favourite as you can alter the look to suit many people, it’s all about embracing rich, dark hues and complementing them with just a touch of lightness. A mixture of dark brown shades and light browns tones is great for warming the complexion without the commitment of a full colour. Honey Brown This blonde-brown is in perfect harmony colour. Thi s look would be for warmer skin tones, a fairer person or someone who doesn’t wear a lot of makeup could get washed out by this shade, for this look ask your stylist for gold and honey highlights blended over a natural medium brown. TIP : If your going for warmer highlights try and stay natural with the colour base its so much more effective! Dark brown to Golden Brown this is an stunning two tone brown with sunny, golden brown tips. Subtle honey and caramel highlights also perk up her complexion. The highlights are seamless and blended, this colour I would recommend for pale to olive skin tones as it adds colour to enhance them. Golden caramel light Brown Golden highlights still flatter and illuminate the face. Celebrities like Jessica Alba always come back to this colour as it highlights for her skin tone. If you require this look ask your stylist for a light brown base and add highlights around the face out to the ends, gradually getting lighter toward the tips of the layers. Chestnut Brown This colour has always been popular as anyone

could wear it. This chestnut brown shade warms up the complexion and enhances the your eyes. Depending on your skin tone you can go a darker shade which is really effective on lighter skin. For extra kick to the colour you can go for soft reddish highlights to add dimension, making your hair look richer. Light Sandy Brown with Highlights This look has been achieved with the help of many blonde highlights. The combination of blonde highlights and light brown tones provides a ravishing sandy brown tone. This sandy brown hair colour looks absolutely stunning on all different skin tones. Go for beach waves to bring out this incredible colour combo. for a more natural colour. Instead of adding plenty of light highlights to your hair, you can go for a few brighter highlights to create an ashy tone. The highlights are placed only around the face to create a nice frame. The best thing about this look is that it creates a sophisticated hair look without extra effort. This is a no commitment colour as several highlights are more than enough to provide you a modern hair colour. Smoky Brown Because this isn’t the darkest brown or black, it could look great on almost anybody. It’s not going to add colour to your skin, it’s going to be an attractive frame because it’s very natural, soft smoky brown. This shade for dark, olive, or golden skin tones , but for pale skin it can give it a wash out look. But you can tweak it with a hint of a different tone to add that little bit of warmth weather its a touch of mahogany to create an espresso tone. Ask your stylist to see what tones suit your skin tone best.
