GLENCRAIG INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS GET DEAF AWARE Pupils Deaf Awareness sessions as part of Integrated Education week. upils at Glencraig Integrated Primary School in Holywood recently enjoyed Deaf Awareness sessions, delivered by staff and volunteers from Action on Hearing Loss. This was part of the school’s Integrated Education week. The Deaf Awareness for Young people (D.A.Y) session kicked off with a discussion on why some people are deaf before moving on to address the various ways we can protect our own hearing. They now have a better understanding of hearing loss and how to communicate with someone who has it.” Nuala Muldoon, Fundraising Executive from Action on Hearing Loss said: “These

We would encourage any other schools or youth groups who might be interested to get in touch.” Action on Hearing Loss are also looking for more volunteers to help deliver this project, full training will be given.

HOLYWOOD AT WAR 1914-1918 Can you help? Holywood residents are invited to contribute to a forthcoming exhibition to be held in Holywood Library this autumn on the theme of Holywood at War, 1914 to 1918

Contact Contact can also be made with the staff in Holywood Library, or directly with Betty McLaughlin (tel 07880 735795) or Robin Masefield (tel 07966 589091). he exhibition is being organised by the Local History Group of the Holywood University of the Third Age (U3A). It follows not just two successful exhibitions on aspects of Holywood’s past run in the Library, but also a previous exhibition on the theme of Holywood at War, which was held many years ago. Once again it will draw on the rich material in the Library’s historical Archives which are being catalogued by the U3A Local History Group. The War Memorial in Redburn Square records the names of over one hundred men from Holywood and district

T

who made the supreme sacrifice in the First World War. On the 1st of July 1916, no less than 21 soldiers from Holywood were killed at the battle of the Somme. While many Holywood households suffered the loss of a loved one, two local families poignantly each lost three sons in that War, and no less than nine sets of brothers died. John Spencer Dunville of Redburn won the Victoria Cross, posthumously in 1917, and a significant number of other medals for gallantry were also won by Holywood volunteers. The Holywood U3A Branch are, in

partnership with North Down Museum and other local historical societies, jointly researching some of the many fascinating stories about the individual soldiers and their families. This brings home the scale of both the contribution and the loss across the whole of the Borough. In addition, members of the U3A are collecting reminiscences from a range of older Holywood and district residents, including recording their family ties with the First World War and with Palace Barracks. Of course, the First World War did not just affect those who left

our shores to fight; many men and women volunteered in other capacities such as ambulance drivers or nurses. In addition, many also made significant contributions on the Home Front, for example working in ammunition factories. This research has already thrown up some valuable material for which U3A members are most grateful; they would like local residents to come forward who have family connections and memorabilia such as letters, photographs or medals from that time which might potentially form part of a wider display.

After a long trek to the top, they raised a glass to toast his memory. When the sponsorship for their ordeal was totalled they had raised a fantastic £1,210! Robin was a strong, healthy, happy and sporty 36 year old looking forward to the birth of much longed for twins when, without warning, he was

diagnosed with a Grade 4 brain tumour – one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Only 17 months later, when his twins were just 15 months old, Robin died from this dreadful illness. He was only 38 years of age. His devastated family set up the Robin Menary Foundation to raise funds for research into brain cancer. Every penny raised goes directly to research. There are no running costs, no salaries to pay and that has allowed them to make a donation of £17,000 to Queen’s University’s Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology.

About The Robin Menary Foundation

The Robin Menary Foundation is an umbrella group of Brain Tumour Research, a group of 18 brain tumour charities and several other umbrella groups working together to raise desperately needed funds for brain tumour research. Brain Tumour Research was selected as the chosen partner as every pound raised directly funds research into brain cancer, the biggest cancer killer of men, woman and children under forty.

Hair Advice BY SABRINA ROBINSON SR Hairdressing | 26 Sandown Road | TEL : 028 9065 8579 | Email : srhairdressing@hotmail.com

THE EFFECTS OF AGING ON YOUR HAIR The maturing woman should style their hair to their advantage and recognise that hair changes with age. As we age our hair begins to produce less melanin, the same melanin that gives our skin its colour. This is the reason behind our hair turning grey. Grey hair is not always a sign of aging it can appear at any age and is it’s caused by a reduction of pigment (grey hair) or complete loss of pigment (white hair), and the reason it happens is not fully understood. Aging also affects our hair in other ways. As we age our hair is prone to becoming drier, and so requires more moisture than ever before. I would recommend a deep protein moisture mask once a week to replace lost moisture. When the hair is ageing it also loses some of its elasticity and the texture of the hair deteriorates. Some women will notice that their hair becomes thinner and lacks vitality, for others it can appear dry and coarse. This happens because as we age, the size of the hair follicles shrinks and hair growth slows down. As a result there is not enough new growth to replace what we lose. <<< These are three of my favourite hairstyles that epitomise fashionable looks for the mature woman

Hair Colour For Aging Hair

When choosing your specific hair colour to help disguise your grey hair it is vital not to go more than two shades darker or lighter than your natural hair colour. If you are contemplating an even darker or lighter colour be careful as it can produce a dull skin complexion. As we age, we lose definition in our face, and hair color can add that back in, if you’ve gone too blonde in an attempt to cover grey (a common mistake), add in some deeper, warm or natural lowlights. Equally, if you’re on to that jetblack shade, applying a few soft tones throughout can be effective. This creates a contrast that can make the hair

appear more natural. If you like your grey or white hair and want to keep it, it is best to use a hair shampoo and conditioner that is designed specifically for grey hair. And the violet coloured base in the products help neutralise any yellow or greenish tones found on some grey hair. You can also add some highlights to lighten the hair look which blends into a softer natural tone. Highlights or lowlights can disguise any grey by blending them into the rest of your hair. The same as with hair colour, avoid going more than two shades lighter than your natural hair colour to avoid looking older than you really are. With aging your hair

Products

loses its elasticity and this creates problems when styling the hair, by using a weekly deep conditioning treatment recommended for aging hair, this will help to maintain the moisture levels in your hair which makes it easier to style. Thinning hair can be given a thicker appearance by using volumizing products such as shampoos and mousses

Create Younger Looking Hair & Find The Perfect Length

be highly flattering. A classic soft layered bob works perfectly for fine hair and softens facial lines. If hair is thinning avoid an overly layered cut, many women get lots of layers because they believe this adds volume, but if the hair isn’t there the layers won’t help. As an alternative, consider a cut with long layers and subtle graduation, rather than shorter layers throughout. A sweeping side fringe can add a fun youthfulness to the look, and instantly creates fullness toward the front of your head, where women tend to lose hair. Go for a thicker fringe with softened ends as a blunt fringe can be too harsh.

f in the event you ever lost the mental capacity to handle your financial affairs have you prepared for someone to take your place to make your decisions? Are you even aware that this can be done? The Daily Mail reported that ‘just 246,000 powers of attorneys were registered in 2013 - but there are currently 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia’* In England and Wales they use a document known as a Lasting Power of Attorney whereas in Northern

Ireland this protection is offered by way of an Enduring Power of Attorney. What this document offers is the control and security of knowing that if you ever lost mental capacity that you have appointed someone you trust to make the best financial decisions on your behalf. An Enduring Power of Attorney can only be signed when a person has the capacity to understand the document and why they are signing it. Once someone has lost mental capacity

it is too late and their families will have to go through the alternative route of appointing a Controller on their behalf, this process is longer, more expensive and you could end up with a Controller that you would not have ultimately chosen yourself. Putting an Enduring Power of Attorney in place is a straightforward process. You simply need yourself and whomever you wish to appoint as your Attorney to sign the document in the presence of a witness. You can appoint more than one Attorney if you

This in turn has helped create a cleaner, greener environment, and encouraged all of us to think more carefully about how we use our resources.

That’s great news, but at an individual level it has created a new problem. What do we do when we forget our bag? Not to mention the inconvenience of lugging around several large jute totes before we even reach the shops. Fortunately a solution is at hand with the Flip & Tumble 24/7 reusable bag. Designed in the West Coast of America, and available in 10 different colours, these compactable shopping bags exude Californian cool.

One of the biggest changes in retail across the UK and Ireland has been the disposable bag tax. As the name implies, the 24/7 can be used anywhere at any time. Each bag is made from ripstop nylon which is light, strong, and extremely compactable. When in use the 24/7 will hold around 16kgs. When no longer required it will fold to roughly the size of a peach, with a strong double fold to keep it firmly in place. This makes it really easy to use. BLING BLING

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY Alison’s back with some thoughts and inspirations plus news on a fantastic open day at Helen’s Bay Organic Gardens

etty Bling (as she calls herself, to conceal her true identity, although Betty is actually her real name) dances up her sparkly hall to the all-glass front door, in peach, fluffy dressing-gown and leopardskin nightie. Her friend and daughter are also glamorously dressed-down, for today is their regular massage afternoon. With the same loving attention to home and family, Betty has crafted and nurtured these hours of relaxation. Her girlie know-how alone should run for president; The spare room is heated

and ready for scents and secrets. Dinner is prepared for the men returning from the match. The sound of a cork popping off a chilled Prosecco comforts and delights; let the session begin. I always feel I’m a guest and not that I’m at work. And then there are these two young footballers I know; one’s all about warming the muscles before a game and the other has an injury. Massage around the wounded knee (not on or over, please note) will support the healing process during this time of required rest; circulating

fresh, nutritious blood to the area, taking the stress away from the thigh and calf. As good as gold the boy lets me work for half an hour with sweet almond and peppermint oil before taking up the blankets to swop the floor for the sofa for an hour or more of x-box. Let the healing continue. A more vigorous treatment with chopping and clapping, with lavender and chamomile are good anti-spasmodics for the boy who’s due to play. The muscles are warmed, the feet and head are ready to kick-ass. Such is the diversity of the client

and their need...there’s a new gardener on the books too...the third one. Gardeners be mindful of breaktimes and posture :) On the subject of gardens, Geborgenheit Massage will be at Helen’s Bay Organic Garden on May 7th at the community gardeners’ open day. On offer are complementary Singing Bowl massages, refreshments, a farm walk and a cookery demonstration. Was lovely last year and, should the sun shine, will be very wholesome again this year too.
