Fujitsu Goes The Extra Mile For Macmillan Almost 100 volunteers from Fujitsu’s Belfast offices as well as Holywood donned their running gear and took to Victoria Park for the company’s UK wide ‘5K My Way’ challenge to raise support for its charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

C

ollectively, staff from Fujitsu’s Northern Ireland offices covered over 500 miles and raised almost £7,000 for the leading cancer care charity which aims to improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer. Speaking about the 5K My Way challenge, Fujitsu’s Sinead Dillon said; “From Manchester to Wakefield and Belfast to Derry~Londonderry, hundreds of Fujitsu volunteers from our sites across the UK

came out on force to support the incredible services offered by Macmillan Cancer. This is just the first in a series of special fundraising events we will be holding in aid of Macmillan and the support they offer to those people and their families affected by cancer. While the weather was against us in Belfast, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the runners and I congratulate all those who took part, particularly those

who stretched themselves to complete the 10K route!” As well as engaging in fundraising activity, Fujitsu is working with Macmillan Cancer Support to create a single technology platform to revolutionise the way volunteers engage with the charity. This new platform will enable Macmillan to better recruit and mobilise the volunteers who are vital to ensuring the charity can reach everyone affected by cancer.

Tap your toes and sing along in this splashy adaptation of the celebrated and beloved film. Singin’ In the Rain has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline - the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers. In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item, but behind the scenes, things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen. Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her. T H

he event, hosted by the Ladies Committee, raised funds for the Lady Captain’s nominated Charity, the Samaritans (Bangor and North Down Branch). Visitors included the Director of the branch Ms Deirdre Walshe. Lady Captains and Lady Vice Captains from neighbouring North Down Golf Clubs also attended. The skirl of the pipes and a selection of melodic airs, played by Holywood staff member Robert Lyttle, enhanced the morning’s proceedings and

were greatly appreciated by all present. The scent and colours of the summer flowers on display were also much admired.Throughout the morning and afternoon members competed in a number of golfing competitions and the weather was certainly very kind. An exciting hole in one was scored by Mrs Karen McMillan. Temperatures actually rose by 4 degrees in the afternoon and competitors enjoyed playing a beautifully prepared course. Finn’s World Do What You Love. Love What You Eat.

Most of us start our day with coffee and a commute; Finn starts hers with surfing. With her twin passions of food and the sea, Finn’s philosophy is that as long as she is never far from either, it’s been a good day at the office! WHEN LIFE IS BUSY, IT CAN BE HARD TO FIND THE TIME AND MONEY TO FEED YOURSELF WELL. ENTER FINN’S WORLD, WHERE YOU’LL DISCOVER DELICIOUS, HEALTHY FOOD THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK, ALLOWING YOU TO SPEND MORE TIME FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS. FOLLOW FINN’S TIPS ON HOW TO EAT BETTER TO LIVE A HAPPIER, MORE BALANCED LIFE. ALL RECIPES ARE GLUTEN-FREE.

Sunny Summer Quinoa Salad

There are lots of little bits to this salad – but, oh my God, it’s so good. I use this quantity either as a main event at a summer lunch or I keep it portioned in the fridge to take out with me.

SERVES 3 OR 2 RAVENOUS HUMANS 1 cup (185g) uncooked quinoa 2 cups (470ml) GF vegetable stock 1 fresh or 2 dried bay leaves

½ red onion, thinly sliced 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 bell peppers, sliced 1 cup (170g) green seedless grapes 300g cooked tikka masala chicken – I get Green Farm as it uses certified GF seasoning! ½ cup (25g) fresh coriander leaves, 3 tbsp craisins – dried cranberries, not crazy raisins 4 tbsp toasted seeds – I use sunflower and pumpkin 2 tbsp olive oil salt and pepper to taste

Give the quinoa a good rinse with cold water to stop it getting a bitter taste as it cooks (due to a coating on the outside of the grain). I do this in a sieve, since the quinoa grains are itty-bitty and they fall out of a colander. Add the quinoa, water, stock and bay leaf to a pot and bring to the boil. I don’t tend to add salt as I find the stock cube/pot is usually salty enough by itself. Lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes with the lid on. I find my stove

works best on a lower setting with the lid on – if it’s too high the quinoa can bubble over. After this, I take a teeny bit out and have a nibble. If it’s done (cooked through and no gritty feeling) I take the quinoa off the heat and let it stand for 5 minutes with the lid on to fluffy-ize itself. In theory, you would let this cool down, go off on your merry way and come back later when it was cool to complete the salad. But I’m usually hungry, so that doesn’t tend to happen. Slice the onion in super-thin strips and soak them in the lemon juice. This takes the raw-onion-esque whack off them (and colours the lemon juice pink, which looks cool in the salad). Slice the peppers into long thin strips. Cut the grapes in half lengthways. Find a lovely big salad bowl – I love the turned wooden ones – and layer up the salad: quinoa first (don’t forget to take out the bay leaf), then chicken, grapes and veggies. Chuck the lemon juice on with the onions and sprinkle over the coriander, dried cranberries and toasted seeds. Follow with the olive oil and a little salt and pepper to taste.

SERVES 2 HUNGRY HUMANS 4 large or 6 small shallots coconut or sesame oil, for frying 2 portions rice noodles handful Chinese broccoli 10 GF fish balls can be sour ced from any good A sian market 1tsp fresh ginger, finely chopped 5 thinly sliced mushrooms shiitake 4 large pak choi leaves, shredded 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder splash GF tamari soy sauce ½ Knorr Vegetable Stock Pot or sachet (18g) 2 umami eggs hardboiled eggs that have been pe eled and soaked for 6 hours in 3 tbsp tamari soy and 3 tbsp water fresh coriander leaves

then, in a pan, stir-fry the ginger, chopped fish balls, mushrooms and pak choi, seasoning them with the Chinese five-spice powder. When the broccoli is done, set it aside. Then, when the noodles are al dente, drain them and then pop them back in the pot with 3 cups (720ml) of fresh boiling water. This gives the soup a less starchy base. Add a dash of tamari soy sauce and the Stock Pot or miso sachet and simmer for 3 minutes.

TO SERVE Place the noodles and broth in large soup or ramen bowls. Arrange the stir-fry mix, broccoli and umami egg slices as you To Serve like. Garnish with lots of crispy Beansprouts shallots, fresh coriander, some Chilli and Lime Sauce beansprouts, a dollop of chilli ½ lime, cut into 2 wedges sauce and a lime wedge. Do You Ever Wonder Why Your Hair Won’t Grow Past A Certain Point? THE ROOT CAUSE

By Sabrina Robinson SR HAIRDRESSING

After colouring your hair you see your roots starting to show a few weeks later, but your hair length doesn’t seem look any longer, you’re going without a haircut for months, but your hair is still at that annoying shoulder length. How infuriating it can be, if you’re trying to grow your hair, but it just won’t grow! Why? HAIR BREAKAGE Hair grows at an average rate of half an inch every month. Which means, the average person’s hair grows about 6 inches every year. If your hair and body is not receiving enough nutrients such as vitamins and minerals and is breaking off at the same rate, your hair will stay the same length all year until you change your bad habits! NEW PRODUCT ALERT! The new L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Inforcer products, for strengthening fragile hair. With a Biotin and B6 vitamin-

enriched boost, this reinforcing shampoo and conditioner is designed to target breakage and split ends, leaving hair soft and healthy. Your hair will become more resistant and stronger with continued use. Technology enriched with Biotin amd B6 known for their strengthening properties Recommended use for Fragile and breaking hair. Avaiable at SR Hairdressing.. SPLIT ENDS We’ve all have to deal with split ends, which are literally ends of hair that have split in two, due to the hair not being treated right and not receiving enough nutrients to live a long and healthy life. As a result, the split in the hair goes up higher and higher, resulting in the ends just breaking off. So, although your hair may be growing from the root - simultaneously, it is also breaking off from the bottom, making it seem like your hair is just stuck at a certain length.

GO FOR THE CHOP Once split ends occur, it is not possible to undo them. The only thing you can do is cut those ends off and prevent them in the future. If you leave split ends in your hair they will just get worse and creep up the hair further, leading to more hair breakage. GOOD GENES, BAD GENES Sometimes the hairs health and growth is just based on genetics. Every person has a cycle of hair growth specific to them, once a certain amount of time has passed, the hair will no longer grow and will either break off, shed. Each hair strand has its own growth cycle, which is why we typically have different lengths of hair strands throughout our head. This cycle can be anywhere from 2 to 6 years, and no matter how well you treat your hair, for some people it’s simply down to your DNA.

SKILLS / #56 / AUGUST 2017

LOOPMAG.NET Christine from Colour & Cloth shows you how to create the summer hat look for under £10.

CREATE THE LOOK

Following the trends doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune...with a needle and thread, and in some cases a glue gun you can have the savvy satisfaction of saying ‘I made it myself’ The high street stores and the glossy fashion magazines are brimming with sunhats and this month I show you how to create the look for under £10.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: A WIDE BRIMMED HAT. MINE WAS FROM BARNADOS IN CARRICK FOR £3.00 1 METRE OF BOBBLE OR POM POM TRIM 1 SKEIN OF EMBROIDERY THREAD - ANCHOR IS A GOOD BRAND. 1 EMBROIDERY NEEDLE. 75CM RIBBON - I CHOSE GREY POLKA DOT I put the bobble trim on first. I used my sewing machine and a black bobbin thread and a white top thread. However this can also be attached by handsewing, in which case you

only need a white thread (not the embroidery one!) Chalk out the text for the hat, I chose ‘Summer’ ... here’s hoping! Use the Anchor embroidery thread here. I used a ‘chain stitch’ to create the writing. Secure all the loose threads. Last step...add the ribbon band. There are so many options of ribbons in the craft and fabric stores. I attached mine with 2 small stitches. That means I can easily snip the threads and change ribbons. **QUICK TIP ** Steps 1 & 3 can also be done by glue gun! Bring back that sunshine!
