Really Tee’d Off Golf Success The Taylor Family from Bangor recently held their annual charity ‘Really Tee’d Off’ Golf Day, at Holywood Golf Club. The event is a huge success year on year and this year was no different with the event raising over £3,000 for local charity, Children’s Heartbeat Trust.

T

he Taylor Family whose son Joel has a congenital heart defect , decided to hold an annual charity event to give something back to the charity who have supported them immensely since Joel’s diagnosis. Previously the family have held bed pushes and sponsored walks before

making the Golf Day their annual fundraiser now for the past four years. To date, the family have now raised a staggering £19,000 pounds for the charity and Joel’s, Dad Robert speaks on the support they have received. “Over the years, we have been blown away by the generosity of

local people and businesses in supporting our charity events for Children’s Heartbeat Trust. We cannot thank everyone enough for their wonderful support and especially to Stuart Campbell and Paul McCormick of Holywood Golf Club for their tremendous work in organising the golf day and evening function. Without them the event would not happen. The money raised this year, will make such a difference to Children’s Heartbeat Trust and other families who need support in the coming months.” Children’s Heartbeat Trust is a local charity that provides emotional and practical support to babies, children and young people with heart disease, and their families. For further info on Children’s Heartbeat Trust please contact 028 9031 2228; email lynn@childrensheartbeattrust.org or you can visit the website childrensheartbeattrust.org

Harland Wines was formed by friends Adam McCullough and Simon Bryans from Holywood who have a mutual appreciation of wines. We get the lowdown on their speciality Georgian wine and how the business began.

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS he mind might automatically place a marker on the map of France, Italy, Spain or Australia when it comes to some of the worlds leading wine producers. But this pair of friends from Holywood have discovered a new place to mark; Georgia, where the ancient tradition of quevri wine-making dates back over 7,000 years. “Adam originally tried Georgian wines in a restaurant in London last year,” says Simon, “and was very impressed with the high quality and pricing. After researching we discovered a rich history to Georgian wines, with them being the oldest in the world and politics having blocked trade with the western world for the last 650 years. We also discovered that there were no wholesalers in Northern Ireland and that there was a gap in the market.” They have a range of three red, three whites and an

T

orange wine, as Simon explains, “All the grape varieties are indigenous to Georgia, the main varieties would be Saperavi which produces our red wine and Rkatsiteli which produces white. Quite a mouthful but the public seem to be embracing them! The orange wine is white grapes fermented like red grapes with the skins left on. This is done in large terracotta pots which are buried underground in a process the Georgians call Qvevri. It is extremely tannic and a very acquired taste but something completely different.” As the business develops they aim to be the go to wholesalers to source interesting and unique wines for restaurants and wine merchants. Ultimatley the plan is to expand the distribution network to really give the grape varieties the international acclaim they evidently deserve. “As success grows with the Georgian wines we are looking

at bringing in other wines from the Black Sea Region and another area we have our eyes on at the minute are Indian wines which are growing ever more popular. We have also been dealing with a man that owns a vineyard down in Lusk outside Dublin. We are starting to import a small amount of his wine which is a Cabernet Merlot blend. Currently the off-licences we supply are The Grange Wine Merchants in Holywood, The Vineyard wine merchants on the Ormeau Road or at the Vintage wine merchants in Antrim or Randlestown. As for restaurants, we currently supply Graze, Shu and Deanes to name but a few. We are always adding to this list and have quite a few top end restaurants lined up for January!” Harland Wines | The Courtyard, 16 Downshire Road | Holywood, 07919 550050 or 07872 902229 sales@harlandwines.co.uk

10 New Jobs Created As Purpose Built Nursery Opens In Seahill Tiger Tots Day Nursery has opened the doors to its first purpose built nursery in Holywood, creating 10 new jobs. Part of the £300,000 investment was funded by Danske Bank.

T

he nursery is the first in Seahill, Co Down, filling a gap in the market and has the capacity for 37 children. The business has already had dozens of enquires, with places filling up fast. This is the first Tiger Tots Day Nursery to be opened. Adele Moore, Owner at Tiger Tots Day Nursery, said: “Opening my own nursery is something I have always wanted to do. I had a vision of the type of nursery I would want to send my own children to and with the support of Danske Bank this is now a reality. We purchased an old scout hall that had laid derelict for the past eight years and carried out extensive building work to transform it into a suitable location for the nursery, replacing the entire roof and carrying out major refurbishments to the interior.”

Pictured L-R is Ellen Matthews, Business Banking Manager at Danske Bank and Adele Moore, Owner of Tiger Tots Day Nursery.

The nursery is divided into age specific rooms with a soft play area and a large lawn outside for the children to play on. Mrs Moore continued: “Every child learns and develops at a different pace, we have a dedicated team who use their knowledge to inspire and engage the children to learn in their own unique way. We are also considering the possibility of an after schools club which means we would be recruiting more staff.” Ellen Matthews, Business Banking Manager, Danske Bank, commented: “Tiger Tots Day Nursery has transformed an old derelict building into a purpose-built nursery which has created new jobs for the area. This latest addition to the Holywood area is a welcome venture and we are proud to have helped Adele open her dream nursery,”

Please Don’t Tell evolved from the frustration of being unable to find any brands a fashion savvy women desires, but was unable to buy here in Northern Ireland. We wanted to provide an effortless, confident wardrobe with a sartorial elegance.

W

e opened our first store in 2011 on the Lisburn Road and from the outset we had a vision of how the store had to look. We discussed our needs with Ian Slater from Slater Design and Terry from Terry Design, two talented creative businesses based in Ireland. They listened to our requirements and the brand ‘Please Don’t Tell’ was born. There were many influences from our travels to London, New York and Paris and our specifics had to include a curved rail, a circular fitting room and a mirrored wall. We mixed modern, clean surfaces with the warmth of parquet. The palette is intentionally minimal allowing the garments to take centre stage. Next came the brands-Like any business, our brand and our choice of brands is always evolving. Where we started 4 years ago is not a million miles away from where we are, but with the insight and desires of our customers we have fine tuned the brands we stock and we do have our favourites. Our brand mix IS exclusive to us in thE North of Ireland

Isabel Marant Isabel Marant Etoile Joseph Helmut Lang Theory Sonia Rykiel

NEXT SEASON We are introducing Chloe and Victoria by Victoria Beckham. Both these brands have gone through a metamorphosis where the influence from the mainline collections along with the designers involvement in the new direction of the secondary line is key. This is very exciting for us and believe all the brands for SS16 will not only compliment each other but offer an even better selection for all occasions and requirements.

LONGEVIT Y

Please Don’t Tell is not so much trend based, as our clothes have longevity that will last more than a season. We focus on design, fabrics and cut. The quality combined with the energy and honesty of our staff is what we thrive on.

GOING GLOBAL

We are proud to part of Farfetch, a global online store with over 300 boutiques worldwide. Each independent boutique is carefully selected for their forward-thinking attitude, unique approach to merchandising and diversity of brands. We are the only ‘Farfetch’ store in Ireland (www.farfetch.com) Previously we have been recognised by Vogue and The Fashion Telegraph as one of the ‘Best Boutiques Outside London’. For a small boutique we were extremely proud.

THE HOLY WOOD CONNECTION

In February this year, Please Don’t Tell opened it’s second store in Holywood, another small boutique offering a taste of what is stocked on the Lisburn Road and giving our North Down customers less of a journey across town.

Loop Mag | December 2015 | Know Your Units

drinkwiseagewell.org.uk

14

ALCOHOL AWARENESS KNOW YOUR UNITS NHS recommends: Men should not regularly* drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day. Women should not regularly* drink more than 2-3 units a day. (*Regularly defined as every day) If you had a heavy drinking session you should avoid alcohol for 48 hours. A guideline for the number of units are as follows:

A can of standard lager, beer or bitter = 1.8 units A pint of standard lager, beer or bitter = 2.3 units A small glass of wine (125mls) = 1.5 units A large glass of wine(250mls) = 3 units A measure of spirits = 1 unit 14 LOOPMAG.NET

Research indicates that around 200,000 people in the UK arrive at work with a hangover every day and over 45 year olds are three times more likely to drink alcohol daily. Liam Burns MPS from Burns Pharmacy advises how your community pharmacy can help make sure you’re in the know when it comes to alcohol intake. HEALTH RISKS The effects of alcohol on your health will depend on how much you drink. Most people who regularly drink more than the NHS recommends don’t see any harmful effects at first. Instead, they tend to have symptoms after a number of years such as liver problems, reduced fertility, high blood pressure and increased risk of various cancers. The World Health Organisation estimates that 20% of alcohol related deaths are from cancer, 15% from cardiovascular conditions and 13% are from liver disease. Scientific research estimates that alcohol is responsible for around 9,000 cancer deaths every year in the UK. THE MORNING AFTER Hangover cures are generally a myth. Although there are no cures for hangovers there are ways to ease the symptoms. Treatment involves rehydrating the body and the best time to do this is before going to sleep. Over the counter painkillers can help with headaches and muscle cramps. Paracetamol based remedies are preferable as aspirin/ ibuprofen may further irritate the stomach and increase nausea and sickness. In some cases an antacid or zantac may be useful to settle your stomach first. Water and isotonic drinks are best for replacing fluids as they are easy on the digestive system unlike energy drinks. The best way to avoid a hangover is not to drink. If you decide to drink, do it sensibly and within recommended limits. In January, Alcohol Concern is launching “Dry January” campaign which encourages people to go alcohol free for the 31 days of January. Participants often report losing weight, sleeping better, more energy, clearer skin plus huge savings. Will you accept the challenge?

Jumper Into The Christmas Spirit With Cancer Fund For Children Cancer Fund for Children is urging people to 'jumper' into the Christmas spirit in December by taking part in the charity's festive jumper day campaign, All Wrapped Up.

W

rap local families affected by cancer up in a blanket of kindness and support this Christmas by donning the fluffiest, cosiest, cheesiest Christmas jumper to be found. All Wrapped Up is the perfect excuse to bring work colleagues, friends, club members, church or class mates together while raising money for local families whose lives have been devastated by cancer. This year, the charity hopes to raise a phenomenal £30k through its flagship Christmas campaign which has generously been sponsored by Bangor Fuels and Fusco Vehicle Sales for a second year. Cancer Fund for Children fundraiser, Ana Wilkinson, said: “Christmas is a time for giving, togetherness and joy but for some families who are living with cancer, the festive season intensifies the negative issues they are already dealing with such as isolation, loneliness and financial struggles. Cancer Fund for Children understands this and strives to support families through initiatives like our Home Heating

Grant which helps alleviate the extra financial strain this time of year brings. Special festive events, grottos and residentials at our Narnia log cabin, are tailored to families’ needs and aim to bring everyone together to lessen feelings of isolation. Cancer Fund for Children receives less than one per cent of its income from the government. Without campaigns like All Wrapped Up, the charity wouldn’t be able to provide our vital support services so that families in Northern Ireland don’t have to face cancer alone. This is why we are urging everyone to dig out their Christmas jumpers and join in the festive fun. We are extremely grateful to sponsors Bangor Fuels for turning up the heat on the campaign and Fusco Vehicle Sales for helping us get the campaign up and running.” Johnny Fusco from Bangor Fuels and Fusco Vehicle Sales said: “We are proud to sponsor Cancer Fund for Children’s All Wrapped Up campaign again this year. It is great to know that with our help, the money raised Cancer Fund for

Cancer Fund for Children’s Sorcha Chipperfield and Johnny Fusco from Bangor Fuels help launch the charity’s All Wrapped Up Christmas Jumper campaign. Children will be able to support even more local families living with cancer. Please join us by registering to take part, putting on your Christmas jumpers and flooding the offices, clubs and schools in Northern Ireland with tinsel and glitter.” Cancer Fund for Children would love everyone to join in its All Wrapped Up campaign but there are more ways to support the charity this Christmas. You may like to take part in ‘Presents for Pounds’ whereby teachers forgo gifts in favour of pupils making a donation to Cancer Fund for Children, buy the charity’s Christmas cards or organise your own festive fundraising event. 12 reasons why books are the gift that keep on giving Northern Ireland is a region of book lovers, with a proud literary tradition. Yet this great heritage appears to be in decline, eroded each year by the growth of e-readers and the closure of local booksellers. Are we facing a future which is on-line only? Christopher from Oscar & Joy is on the case...

here is something of a backlash against both online sales and e-books. Physical sales are up 5%; growth of e-readers have stalled; and last month even Amazon opened its first bricks and mortar bookshop. Perhaps society has collectively realised that local book selling is a tradition we actually wish to preserve? So why buy local books? I think the most important reason is because they are so personal. There is something special about browsing a selection and picking out a book with a specific person in mind. The act of giving feels more meaningful when you are directly involved in the process; and this is

particularly true when it comes to gifts for your own children. Second is the sense of discovery. Although local stores can’t compete on volume they win hands down on the quality of the experience. You can only really understand what a book is like when you pick it up and read it for yourself. Third, there is probably a greater appreciation that local purchases do much more to help the local community, and that’s a win-win for everyone. But the most important thing about books is the quality of the product. So why give a book? Well in the spirit of Christmas let me give you 12 reasons....

Drink driving over the festive period

“Eat, Drink, be Merry” Nearly everyone enjoys a tipple or two over the festive period but what happens when things go wrong? Jennifer Hanna from Hunt Solicitors has the lowdown

A

n extra glass of wine with dinner, driving the morning after a staff Xmas night out... the most common phrase used in drink driving pleas is “I thought I would be ok to drive”. Often we believe a few glasses of wine at dinner or driving the morning after means we will be well under the limit but do you know that 1 unit of alcohol takes on average 1 hr to leave our system? A large glass of wine may take 3 hours for our body to break down the alcohol. This may mean alcohol could still be in our system after a number of drinks the previous evening. A recent survey commissioned by the DOENI indicated that 1 in 4 persons in Northern Ireland said they would drive after one alcoholic drink and 1 in 2 would get into a vehicle with a driver who had consumed an alcoholic beverage. According to PSNI statistics between May 201222 LOOPMAG.NET

May 2015 there were a total of 6591 arrests in Northern Ireland as a result of drink driving or driving under the influence of drugs. So, if you find yourself in a scenario whereby you are faced with a drink driving charge what do you need to know? It’s important to remember that everyone who enters the police station on suspicion of an offence is entitled to Legal Aid regardless of their means. It’s a common misconception that people do not call for the appropriate legal advice as they fear it will be too costly but all advices in the police station are entirely free. The police station can be a very stressful environment and it’s important to have the correct legal advice from the very beginning to get the best outcome possible. The drink driving limit in Northern Ireland is 35 micrograms in 100 millitres of breath. If your reading is borderline you are entitled to request a blood sample which may give a more accurate reading and determine whether or not you will face any prosecution. Another common issue with people facing a drink driving charge is having consumed alcohol when they return home. If police attend at your home some time later; it may be that after consuming alcohol at home the reading of alcohol

in your breath is higher than it was when driving. In this type of scenario a blood test can be carried out and a back calculation performed to ascertain whether or not you would have been over the limit at the time of driving. If your reading is considerably over the limit it’s important to know you still have options. Drink driving usually carries a minimum disqualification of 12 months however you can ask the Court to consider certifying you for a drink driving course which will decrease your period of disqualification by 25%. Having someone to represent your interests and put forward the mitigating factors in your case is imperative. Those who rely on their licence for work purposes would agree that disqualification could have catastrophic consequences for them and their family. Here at Hunt Solicitors we have an experienced team of solicitors who are available 24 hours a day. Phoning a solicitor and knowing your rights can make the difference between retaining your Driving Licence or facing disqualification.

o the person that kindly posted my ‘corrected’ November advert though our door regarding our use of the term Duck Tape. Thank you for taking the time to read my advert in Loop Magazine and to correct it AND then deliver it back to The Zip Yard in Holywood. Well at least I know that people are reading Loop Magazine and more importantly, my advert! Many have been asking about this Duct vs. Duck thing we’ve got going... here is an explanation from Jim and Tim, the Duct/k Tape Guys: Dear Duct Tape Users: “Is it Duct or Duck? The first name for Duct Tape was DUCK. During World War II the U.S. Military needed a waterproof tape to keep the moisture out of ammunition cases. So, they enlisted Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division to

manufacture the tape. Because it was waterproof, everyone referred to it as “duck” tape (like water off a duck’s back). Military personnel discovered that the tape was good for lots more ; They used it for Jeep repair, fixing stuff on their guns, strapping equipment to their clothing etc. After the War, the housing industry was booming and someone discovered that the tape was great for joining the heating and air conditioning duct work. So, the color was changed from army green to the silvery color we are familiar with today and people started to refer to it as “duct tape*.” Therefore, either name is appropriate. We go by both The Duct Tape Guys, and The Duck Tape Guys. And, we use the words Duck and Duct interchangeably on our web site.” Jim & Tim, the Duck/Duct Tape Guys

Secondly A ‘Gaff’ as you refer to is: i A stick with a sharp hook for landing large fish. ii. A slang term when referring to someones house. Whereas, a ‘GAFFE’ is an unintentional blunder, mistake or error... Touché!”

Keep Your Head This Advent

MUSINGS ON MASSAGE

A

fter a full day’s photographic reporting through a troubled Belfast in the 70’s my father often took to the sofa and rubbed his scalp with his fingertips through his big hair. We declined all kind offers to help him; in those days massage, particularly HEAD massage, hadn’t been invented in Ireland; other peoples’ bodies and hairs were taboo and yucky. No longer so... Indian head massage, massage “spiders” and scalp oil are all available at the hairdressers, the shops and on the internet all offering tension-relief and feel-good from the top down. What my father instinctively knew all those years ago is now marketable and consciously enjoyed by the masses. And with excellent reason too. A quick look through Google or YouTube shows how the simplest moves with fingertips through hair, directly on the scalp, soothe and relax nerve endings, reducing feelings of “tightness,” improving circulation and generally slowing down time. It’s a luxurious treat for the scalp to use an oil but just as pleasurable without. A towel round the shoulders or on the pillow will catch loose hair and flakes. The rest can be brushed up afterwards. Fuzz without fuss. How nice.

Same results for face massages but with an added GLOW.. Local beauty and massage therapists will give full facials leaving a person feeling a whole-body’s worth exhilarated and relaxed. In between salon visits, take a few minutes a day to experiment at home. Its as comforting and effortless as slipping into pyjamas or pouring a glass of wine. The hardest steps are the first ones: being bothered and getting started. ALL YOU NEED IS:

GLOW GETTER TREAT YOURSELF TO A DAILY GLOW HERE’S HOW>>> 1) a small ceramic bowl 2) some oil (almond, olive, coconut), 3) few drops of an essential oil that delights the senses...neroli, patchouli, rose. 4) to have removed make-up 5) to be sitting or lying exactly as you please. Mix oils lightly, dip fingertips on both hands in, exhale, begin. Movements are most beneficial swirling upwards and inwards from all along the jaw-bone and chin towards the nose, round the cheeks, round the eyes (gently gently...avoid stretching or pulling), up to the temples, outwards in circles on the forehead, draw along the eyebrows, repeat and continue for as long as desired. This wonderful act of kindness helps clear sinuses, relieve headaches, improve blood flow to the skin thus improving tone and texture, takes care of puffiness and sagging, is a loving way to keep healthy and stay beautiful. Very little effort, very big reward. At Geborgenheit massage we mix rose and marigold petals with couscous into small cotton pouches especially for facial massages with warm coconut oil. These are available to buy or can be prepared very easily at home. For any questions please call, text or email on...
