The Boomtown Rats to Headline Harmony Live 2018 in Holywood this June. HEADLINERS The three-day event will run from June 1-3 at the Festival Marquee in the Holywood Rugby Club grounds.
Tickets for The Boomtown Rats are £33.50 and available from www.wegottickets.com, Garry’s Barber Shop and Homebird in Holywood.
P
reviously known as the Holywood Harmony Festival, Harmony Live will see big-name acts take to the stage at the main marquee as well as events across several venues in the town. Last year the festival welcomed over 15,000 people into the town and organisers are expecting to top that figure this year having doubled the size of their marquee to accommodate The Boomtown Rats. Festival director Mari Jackson said: “Harmony Live 2018 is set to be bigger, better and more fun with music that will reverberate across
the county. We’re delighted to welcome The Boomtown Rats to Holywood and we know that fans will be eagerly anticipating their June appearance.” Mari said Harmony Live is more than just a music event “it’s a weekend that welcomes involvement from throughout the community” she explained, adding: “Putting Holywood firmly on the map as an exciting music and tourist destination the Harmony Live Festival supports the local economy, working with service providers, vendors and contractors in the area and
improving the footfall into the town and businesses throughout the weekend.” This will be the first appearance by The Boomtown Rats in Holywood and follows on from their successful Belfast date last year. Sir Bob Geldof added: “Is there anywhere in the world better to play Rock ‘N Roll? Is there any crowd more up for it? Are there any people who seem to need it, consume it, rage and rave for it more than that lot up in Northern Ireland? Not in The Rats long experience. The best place to play in. The best crowd to play for. Can’t wait…….” Fans of the Rats can expect hits such as Rat Trap, I Don’t Like Mondays and Looking After Number 1 to blast out from the marquee. Mari said: “We’re really excited to be able to bring The Boomtown Rats to Holywood, it’s a great coup for the festival committee and proves just how far we’ve come from our first year four years ago. The Rats will be a great addition to our list of performers having already welcomed bignamed acts such as Hothouse Flowers, Duke Special, Alabama 3 and Gareth Dunlop. “We’re very proud of the achievements so far. In 2016 we were nominated and shortlisted for Best Tourism Event at the North Down Business Awards and this year we’ve undergone a complete festival rebrand thanks to local company Andy Rice Creative (ARC).”

Burns Pharmacy
Your locally owned and owner-operated pharmacy in Holywood How long has Burns Pharmacy been there? I have owned Burns Pharmacy for the past 22 years but there has been a pharmacy here for over 50 years. I am very proud to be the only remaining locally owned and owner-operated pharmacy in Holywood. Being independent and local makes us unique as we can adapt quickly to customer needs. Myself and the staff all live in Holywood and have a very strong connection with the town and people who live here and in surrounding areas. We are confident that our personal touch and customer service makes us stand out. In addition, we have plentiful, free and easy parking directly in front of the pharmacy and post office. These are just some of the reasons that our customer base stretches from
Holywood to Knocknagoney to Helen’s Bay and the areas in between. What are the roles and names of all the staff? I (Liam Burns MPS) am full time Pharmacist/Owner; Michelle Laverty (MPS) is a full time Pharmacist. Lee-Anne Dunwoody and Betty Crossland (not pictured) are both qualified Pharmacy Dispensing Technicians and Helen Tumelty is a Post Office Clerk and Pharmacy Assistant. The pharmacy has undergone a huge revamp over the last year. What changes have you made? The pharmacy is unrecognisable compared with 18 months ago. Firstly, it has doubled in size. year after the Mace shop closed down. The premises have been completely refitted and the result is a spacious, bright, modern and very welcoming pharmacy and post office. The overall bright, easily accessible and modern premises makes the shop appealing and reflects the professional service we provide. Our customers love the new premises and that is what is most important to us. The private consultation room is a great addition, how important was that in your plans? The spacious, private consultation room has been a valuable addition to the business and is extremely well used for the delivery of a full range of healthcare services including for example blood pressure monitoring, diabetes screening and the flu vaccination service. We also use it for medicine reviews for patients with asthma or diabetes and to provide advice on medicines. In addition, it is invaluable if people want a private discussion regarding any health care issue. What are the full list of services available from Burns Pharmacy? Other services provided in addition to those mentioned above are prescription ordering and collection service, minor ailment scheme, smoking cessation programme and professional healthcare

Beauty
By Deborah Harper
Be Kind To Yourself
INSPIRED
After Mum died I was told ‘to be kind to myself’ so frequently and yet I didn’t really know what it meant or how to do it. A year had passed and I wanted to share some of the ways I was kind to myself - some was easy and some I am still working on.
1. Be Still
Turn off the phone, sit on the sofa or climb into bed. Just rest. Sleep, think, write. Allow the silence to flood all the space around you. Light a candle, breathe deep and slow. It has been in these moments that I have worked out the path I want to take, the jobs that I need to prioritise and the people I need to be around. It brings clarity and I never regret taking the time to be still.
2. Find the Beauty in the Everyday
I created a photo album on my phone and I took photos of the little things that brought me joy. They are little things, like the noise of rain hitting against the window, seeing the little flower begin to peak out of the cold winter ground. The everyday things become a comfort, none more so than a perfectly brewed cup of tea and a bacon buttie.
3. Treat Yourself.
This one I love doing it for other people through working at Deborah Harper Makeup & Beauty but treating yourself can sometimes feel like an indulgence and another thing
to make you feel guilty. But give yourself permission to be looked after. For me a facial is my escapism. The dark room, the candles, all the massage and lotions and potions, having lovely skin after - bonus! If that isn’t your thing, treat yourself to a mood boosting nail paint or de-stressing Indian head massage…I truly believe this is self care at its best.
4. Talk
Share, speak out, communicate. This can be hard to do but not being able to talk can really get you down. Being able to talk takes practice too, often I have to write down my feelings so that I can then communicate them effectively and not go straight into argument mode. I’ve also really benefited from counselling over the years, to be listened to and understood has given me clarity and good coping strategies for moving
forward. Getting stuck in the past is like seeing everything in black and white but moving on and living in the present is colour, it is vibrant and gives you a vision and hope for the future.
5. Say No
As a people pleaser by nature you fear saying no as you do not want to let people down or not being liked. So this one remains the toughest one for me. But over the years I have had to practicing hear myself say ‘No, I just couldn’t commit to that right now.’ My life is a cup, to feel fulfilled and content I need to fill it with things that bring joy. When I try to people please I fill it with more stress, anxiety, worry. When I have said no, the relief is greater than the guilt and my cup gets filled with more time to spend with family, walk the dog, time to keep on top of my accounts, space to be on my own etc etc.
Make a list of the things that bring you joy and promise yourself to do more of those in 2018. Even making the list will make you feel happier! Self care isn’t indulgent, it is an essential, for in loving yourself you are able to love others fully, with greater empathy and understanding. And in an a world that seems to have gone mad we all could do with a little more love.

SHOW CASE
Holywood Young Entrepreneurs Celebrate Success BRAVO A number of students from local schools recently participated in the Young Enterprise programme, showcasing their products for sale to the public at St George’s Market, Belfast.
S
t George’s Market hosted over 700 students from over 60 schools who showcased their start-up businesses at the event, as well as their products, which they developed from conception to production in just three months. The programme takes each student on a business start-up journey that enables the development of business and entrepreneurial skills, while giving them their first opportunity to trade by launching their product for sale at The Big Market. The students are responsible for developing an initial product idea, developing it into a real product for sale, creating a business plan, raising capital to fund production, before marketing and selling their product to the general public –
hopefully generating a profit. The company from Regent House School, named Th13teen, won the Social Media Award at the event for the most retweets. Company Managing Director, Andrew Ritchie (17), said on the day: “We were happy just to participate, but it was an absolute delight to win. Caitlin Reid and Sam Hill were in charge of social media. I’m sure there’ll be a Regent House Grammar team here next year. Donaghadee teenager, Andrew, participated in the programme along with 13 of his classmates, and his enthusiasm was palpable: “As soon as my school told me about the programme, I immediately completed an application form to take part. We created a book that aims to tackle the stigma surrounding autism,
mainly through raising awareness of autism among Key Stage 2 (primary school aged) children. Throughout the development of our product we sought advice from specialists, including Autism NI. We hope our book will allow children to gain a greater understanding of autism.” Carol Fitzsimons, CEO of Young Enterprise, said that every year the Young Enterprise programmes “raise the bar when it comes to product creation, innovation, development, and selling techniques. From fairy doors to craft packs, and artisan coffee to jewellery, mobile apps, gift sets, and more, the selection of products on show at The Big Market 2017 was nothing short of excellent.” “Throughout the day we watched young entrepreneurs execute all their learning from the programmes to connect with, not just their customers, but also their competitors and team-mates on the day. A big thanks goes out to all the schools who support their students in taking part, as well as our mentors, sponsors, and judges, without whom The Big Market simply couldn’t be the success it is.”

Glass WW1 Portraits Brought To life PORTRAITS As 2018 marks the centenary of the end of WW1, Campbell College has launched a year-long project entitled ‘The Men Behind the Glass’ in partnership with the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) which will bring to life the stories of 126 pupils and one member of the school’s teaching staff who died in service during the First World War.
T
he project commences with a series of Primary Schools’ creative workshops which are taking place in East Belfast and beyond throughout January. The project, “The Men Behind the Glass” www. menbehindtheglass.co.uk, which has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, was prompted by the photographic portraits of the fallen which have lined the wood-panelled walls of Campbell College’s Central Hall for decades. Realising that the photographs were starting to deteriorate, the College contacted PRONI to seek advice on preserving them before they were lost forever. This in turn sparked the idea for a wider historical project, not only to restore the images, but to uncover and share the real-life stories of the teenage boys and young men “behind the glass”.
The year-long programme will include schools outreach and curriculum activity, creative exchange events with Germany, community engagement, arts events and the development of an archive website. The activity will culminate in the unveiling of a collaborative archive exhibition on Remembrance Weekend in November 2018 - an exhibition which will then tour various venues throughout the Island of Ireland. Campbell College Headmaster, Robert Robinson MBE said, “Thanks to the support of Heritage Lottery Fund and PRONI we have been able to put together a really exciting range of activities that will open our archive to everyone and allow us to work in partnership with local Primary and Secondary Schools, local history associations, community groups, arts groups and many more. This is about paying respect to our Old Campbellians - the men and boys we lost and telling their stories. It is also about connecting these stories with our lives today and involving as many people as possible in the process.

is about paying respect to our Old Campbellians - the men and boys we lost and telling their stories. It is also about connecting these stories with our lives today and involving as many people as possible in the process. Through the digital side of this project we hope to open up the conversation to the many corners of Ireland - where lives were lost. 100 years on and it is more important than ever that we never forget.” Leading the Primary School workshop, Creative Engagement Co-ordinator, Michelle Young said, “Today, these P7 pupils have been introduced to the story of one pupil, whose story has been recovered through archived letters written home from the battlefield in Northern France. Through role-play and art, the 11 year olds have been given an insight into the lives of local teenagers who, at that time, volunteered to go to war and were actively encouraged to do so by their proud and patriotic families. Little did they know the horrors they would face. It’s gritty stuff but the young people have been really captivated by the storyline and it has definitely brought the story to life for them.” For anyone who has a story to tell or would like to get involved please visit menbehindtheglass.co.uk.

Transport MULTI MODAL
PICTURED: Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway and Claire McLernon from Sustrans. For more information visit www.translink.co.uk/ cycleshelters/ .
PARK UP Cyclists across Northern Ireland can now benefit from 38 new bike shelter/ storage facilities including in Holywood following the completion of a Translink Cycle Shelter Programme.
S
ituated at both Translink NI Railways and Ulsterbus stations, the new facilities will cater for the surge in popularity of cycling across Northern Ireland for both Translink customers and staff. Translink has installed 10-bike parking shelters / ‘cycle d’s’ across most locations that customers can use free of charge. In addition, secure parking compounds have been installed at Holywood Train Station accommodating 30 bikes and at Lisburn Train Station for 20 bikes. Customers can apply online via the Translink website for a Translink key fob to use these facilities*. Their arrival supports a key indicator in the draft Programme for Government (2016 – 2021) to increase the use of public transport and active travel which is crucial to improving physical and mental health as well as reducing environmental impact. Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway said: “This is good news
for all our customers who want to enjoy an active lifestyle enabling them to easily integrate both cycling and public transport into their regular journeys. “Cycling offers a healthy, flexible, inexpensive and environmentallyfriendly way to travel for people of all ages. 65% of everyday journeys in NI are less than five miles – perfect distances for a leisurely cycle. “Existing cycle facilities are popular with many at capacity so this significant development will provide our customers with convenient parking for easy transfer onto the bus or train. 2018 is also the Year of Infrastructure and we will monitor the success of this pilot scheme with a view to future development to ensure our passenger facilities are as attractive and accessible as possible. We’re now encouraging our customers to use these new bike shelter facilities as part of their daily active travel routine,” said Chris.
“
Translink’s New Station Cycle Shelter Programme
“
This offers the opportunity for people living locally to cycle to train and bus stations across Northern Ireland rather than drive these short distances, thus reducing traffic congestion and pollution. Multi-modal journeys are the future and we would encourage more people to consider this as part of their commute or daily routine. Beyond this we’d like to see investment in safe cycle routes to stations and Park & Ride sites

Maximum Impact
With Big Patterns & Statement Pieces
“
Taking hints from Manhattan style icon, Iris Apfel and her panache for eclectic glamour this look is about creating an opulent affect. Mixing genres, colours, eras. Adding pattern over pattern with eccentric statement pieces. More is definitely more! The trick is to NOT be afraid. Don’t hold back! Perhaps don’t create the look in EVERY room, but rather chose a scene or an area – like a dining room, or start smaller in a downstairs loo, hall or cloakroom and add your most lavish of accessories; the quirkiest of lamps; a large patterned wallpaper; mix & match picture frames; mix your Baroque with your Art Deco and basically channel some Iris & your most luxurious glamour and you’ll have yourself one of 2018’s hottest looks.
