Helen’s Bay Players Present ‘There Goes the Bride’ Take a hilarious comedy by comedy giants Ray Cooney and John Chapman and you’ve got the delightful ‘There Goes the Bride’, on stage at St John’s Hall, Helen’s Bay, at 8pm from Wednesday 11 through to Saturday 14 January 2017.

It is a classic having all the standard elements of farce which Helen’s Bay audiences have come to expect: mistaken/assumed identities, confused characters and yarn-spinning which spins out of control. The play also has a unique twist - an imaginary character who appears to only one character on stage. The morning of his daughter Judy’s wedding doesn’t go as planned for workaholic Timothy Westerby who works in advertising. He has devised an ad campaign for a bra company based on a flapper of the 1920s and produces a promotional prop. When Timothy gets a knock to the head, the resulting concussion causes hallucinations that begin with the appearance of the 1920’s flapper named Polly Perkins

who has magically come to life. The fact is not apparent to Timothy who is convinced that Polly is totally real. The various members of Tim’s family do not see Polly and they often do not know whether he is talking to them or himself, but they have to deal with Tim insisting that Polly thinks he’s wonderful. A second knock to the head leads to further complications for Judy’s family: Tim now believes he is Fred Astaire, and Polly is his Ginger Rogers. He is so entrenched in his hallucinated world that he starts to audition for a man he thinks is a Hollywood producer. It wouldn’t have been a complete disaster, except that this producer is actually the father of Tim’s soon-to-be son-in-law. This is not at all what Judy had in mind for the

first meeting of the two sets of parents! Can Judy’s family salvage her special day? Will her fiancé’s father forgive her family’s antics? Will her father recover from the concussion? And will her grandfather ever stop laughing? Farce-lovers will be in stitches as the hysterical story unfolds. Says director David Marshall “I think it will be a colourful, happy show with some memorable characters.” Although written more than 30 years ago, this comedy has a fresh, modern feel to it. Tickets (£8 adults, £5 for under 18s) can be purchased in advance from Square Cut in Station Square, Helen’s Bay, through the Ards and North Down Council Visitor Information Centre (or website), or at the door on the night.

City Airport Supports Local Charity Jt Inspires

05

Cathy McAleer and Alan Tate from JT Inspires with Emma Gilmore from the airport’s Community Fund.

George Best Belfast City Airport has funded a local charity enabling them to develop a new website and an app to share information with young adults living with congenital heart disease.

It aims to inspire healthier lifestyles through educating, promoting and providing opportunities for young adults (15 to 25 year olds) with congenital heart disease to live healthy, active lifestyles. Alan Tate, Jonathan’s father and founder of JTInspires, said: “Jonathan didn’t let his condition affect his quality of life, remarkably he developed a career as a personal trainer, inspiring others and contributing to new research in this field. We set up the charity to carry forward Jonathan’s legacy and support the valuable

research being undertaken by academics and clinicians at Queens University and the Royal Victoria Hospital. We’re so grateful for the support from the airport’s Community Fund. The funding has enabled us to build an outstanding website and app that work side by side to help promote and build awareness of JTInspires. More importantly, it provides us with a unique opportunity to communicate with young people living with congenital heart disease allowing them to access information and resources that will benefit and

help them. The new app and website also feature a ‘donate’ button which will further help our charity to supply a rehabilitation nurse in the Royal Victoria Hospital amongst other medical services.” The JTInspires website can be found at www.jtinspires.com, the app is available for both Apple and Android and found on the Apple App Store or Google Play. New £175,000 accommodation for Holywood Nursery School

The Minister with Mrs Beverley Todd, Chairperson of the Board of Governors at Holywood Nursery School, pupils Carl Beck, Martha Nolan, Oscar Mulholland and Lucy Briscoe.

The new £175,000 accommodation was provided through the minor works scheme following an increase in enrolment at the school to meet demand. Education Minister Peter Weir said: “Earlier this year I approved an increase in enrolment at Holywood Nursery School as there was a clear need for additional places in the area. The new modular building provides an additional nursery classroom and toilet facilities which allows for the growth of the school. I am very pleased to be here today at the opening of this much-needed accommodation which I know will make a real difference to the children and staff.” The new accommodation comprises of a main nursery classroom with adjoining toilets, stores and a quiet room. Enhancement works were also carried out to form a new entrance, additional car parking and an associated access path. In conclusion the Minister said: “The increased places at Holywood Nursery School will help meet current and anticipated demand for pre-school places in the area. This is a good day for Holywood and I congratulate all involved in bringing this project to fruition.”

he focus is on food, drink, music, rugby and above all family & friends. Because Stokers isn’t just your local pub and restaurant, it is creating a community hub. For example, with a big sister branch up in Ballyhackamore village, they set their festive table for some important guests of the Christmas season. They fed 25 homeless and volunteers from Hope Harbour & Belfast Helping Homeless. “Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about - be nice” is painted on the side wall and with community support they utilised The Stokers Halt as a platform to spread some joy. Last year their homeless guests touched the owners with heartwarming comments such as “thank you for giving us dignity” and “it’s nice to be

thought of”. They may not have the solution to the homeless situation, but evidently do have the kindness to recognise it and try to support their neighbours who haven’t found a home yet. In addition, each year Stokers Halt invite you, the community to help give back to others. THE APPROACHABLE SHOEBOX is an appeal to wrap a shoebox with your family and provide a gift inside that would benefit a MAN / WOMAN or CHILD who is homeless or surviving homelessness. Items donated last year; Christmas card or letter, food voucher, socks, toiletries, gloves, a hat, scarf, base layers, a book, toys, chocolate bars, crisps, nuts, toothpaste, toothbrush. Participants then kindly left their box under the Christmas

Tree and staff then delivered them to those in need. A great opportunity for parents and children, local schools or an office initiative between colleagues to do some good. Ongoing, The Stokers halt support Hope Harbour & Belast Helping Homeless, SVP, Salvation Army, Welcome Organisation, Simon Community, Refugees in NI and all local Churches. Already they are sponsoring Holywood FC Under 17s, St. Paul’s GAA and are looking for more opportunities, so get in touch. In their new Holywood base, you’ll find an all day food menu, free wifi, catering options, groups or parties, child friendly, outdoor seating, takeaway, table service, walk-ins welcome and more!

GET READY FOR

BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH Grab the chance to get the whole family closer to nature at Belfast’s Window on Wildlife on Sunday 22nd January

N

ature charity RSPB Northern Ireland is encouraging people across Belfast to take part in the world’s biggest wildlife survey! The Big Garden Birdwatch is a chance for everyone to help nature by donating just one hour to count the birds and other wildlife in their gardens. The data gathered from this survey provides a vital health-check of the wildlife that we share our homes with. In 2016 around half a million people counted the feathered friends in their patch, including a record 35,000 people across

Northern Ireland. Starlings swooped into top spot here after being seen in almost 70 per cent of gardens and green spaces. Now this year, for the first time, the charity is extending the Big Garden Birdwatch weekend by another day to give even more people the chance to get involved. To take part, just spend one hour counting the birds you see at any time during 28, 29 or 30 January. You can use the online bird counting tool to identify and record the birds as you see them directly on your laptop, tablet or smartphone. Or, if

you’ve registered in advance, you can fill in a paper survey form and post it back to the RSPB. They’d also love you to log some of the other wildlife you see in your garden – from squirrels to hedgehogs. As temperatures drop, the natural food available for wildlife becomes scarcer and so birds are more likely to visit our gardens in the hope of supplementing their diets. RSPB NI recommends providing a mix of food sources like seeds, peanuts, sunflower hearts and suet balls to help them keep their energy up during the winter months.

Register to take part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2017 www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. Children can also get involved by counting the birds which visit their school grounds until 17 February. Teachers can get involved in Big Schools’ Birdwatch at www.rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch. No garden – no problem! Top five places to do Big Garden Birdwatch in Belfast: Belfast’s Window on Wildlife. 100 Airport Rd West, Harbour Estate, BT3 9ED. Look out for Goldfinches. Botanic Gardens. LLOYD LOOM FURNITURE Since the twenties Lloyd Loom furniture has graced ocean liners, grand hotels and even the royal box at Wimbledon. Although it looks like rattan, the furniture is made from paper and wire, a technique pioneered by American Marshall Burns LLoyd nearly 100 years ago. Aged 17, he began designing woven linen baskets and baby carriages using traditional cane or willow but hit on a cheaper material made from twisted paper and steel wire. In 1919 he sold the patent of the manufacturing process to London salvage merchant William Lusty who set up a company making

furniture. However it was on the brink of collapse when London & North Eastern Railway began using Lloyd Loom furniture in its hotels. Suddenly it was chic. In 1940 the firm’s east London Bow Street factory was bombed but craftsmen continued to revive per-war pieces. Geoffrey Lusty, William’s grandson, still oversees many original designs now produced in the Far East. In 1985 furniture maker David Breese began creating them in Spalding, Lincolnshire. Nowadays a number of companies produce a range of items ensuring the muchloved furniture remains in our homes.

ARTIQUA HOLYWOOD During the First World War, the supply of rattan and bamboo was interrupted. However, Marshall Burns Lloyd refused to close down his production of lightweight, solid furniture and went looking for alternatives for these traditional raw materials. He found the solution in woven paper. ‘Lloyd Loom’ looks like rattan, but is much stronger and, at the same time, softer. In fact, it is Kraft paper which is wound around steel wires and which is then woven into mats on a loom. Hence the ‘loom’ part of ‘Lloyd Loom’
