LOCAL BOY RECEIVES BOOST FROM ENERGY FOR CHILDREN CHARITY
Connor McNeill (13) recently received a life changing boost from the Energy for Children Charitable Trust, having successfully been awarded funding for a new trike to help with mobility.
C
onnor has a severe learning and physical disability known as Joubert Syndrome, which has left him wheelchair bound and requiring 24 hour care. Connor’s mum, Gillian, applied to the Charity for funding to aid in Connor’s mobility and helping him participate in more social activities. The Charity awarded Connor a new specialist trike, enabling Connor to play outside and ride his trike through the park for the first time, improving his health and wellbeing. Mum Gillian explains, “As Connor is confined to a wheelchair, he finds it hard to join in activities that other children are doing, often simple things like riding a bike through the park. Connor had the opportunity of trying out a trike with his school,
C
Glenveagh Special School, and when we saw the smile on his face we just knew we had to get him a trike of his own. Connor is delighted with his trike and often doesn’t want to get out of it! Thanks to Energy for Children, Connor is now able to play outside and have a much more active social life. We can’t thank Energy for Children enough for their support.” Charity Liaison Officer, Geri Wright, said, “I’m delighted to see how much of a difference this trike has made to Connor’s life. With Connor’s condition restricting him to a wheelchair, it’s great to see him now enjoying outside activities as every child should. This new sense of independence will greatly improve Connor’s health and wellbeing. This is exactly why the
Charity exists, to help local children like Connor who are most in need and I’m thrilled to see the positive impact it is having on the McNeill family”, added Geri. Energy for Children is an initiative of Phoenix Natural Gas and the wider natural gas industry. The Charity was established in 2005 to provide financial support to groups and individuals that may slip through the net of the wider charity network. Founded on the principle that ‘all monies raised go directly to local children and young people’, the Trust aims to reach deeper into the heart of local communities throughout Greater Belfast and beyond in order to really make a difference to disadvantaged children’s lives.
ww.phoenixgroupni.com The trust has helped over 6,000 local children and every month continues to help those who need it most.

MARKS & SPENCER MAKES IT MATTER AT CAMPHILL GLENCRAIG As part of Make it Matter Day (1 June), Marks & Spencer has committed to support M&S colleagues in delivering one million hours of community volunteering by 2025, to help make a difference to the projects and initiatives that really matter in the communities it serves.
M
&S has kickstarted the volunteering at Camphill Glencraig, by helping to develop a woodland path that runs from Seahill Train Station to the North Down coastal path, which will make Camphill more accessible to the local community. Nationwide, employees in every M&S store will join their colleagues by helping to transform local projects that make a real difference. In total, over 50,000 colleagues will support more than 500 community projects across the breadth of the UK. Make it Matter is part of the
recently launched M&S campaign ‘#SpenditWell’, which is about inspiring people to make every moment special by focusing on the experiences, people and things that really matter in life. Angela Robb, M&S Section Manager, said: “We were really excited to come together to support Camphill Glencraig. Volunteering can make a profound difference to the communities in which we live, work and play – we believe that lots of the small actions from lots of people, can collectively have a huge impact.” Vincent Reynolds, Camphill
Glencraig, said: “We at Camphill Community Glencraig were delighted to work with M&S on their new ‘Making Every Moment Special in the Community’ initiative. Camphill Glencraig is a unique community which supports adults, young people and children with learning disabilities and/or complex needs, in a therapeutic setting with a focus on holistic agriculture using bio-dynamic methods. The project, which took place on June 2, helped develop a woodland path that will help increase our engagement with the local community.

VALOUR / #55 / JULY 2017
Centennial Commemoration of John Spencer Dunville VC 26 June was the centenary of the death in 1917 at Epehy in northern France of 2nd Lieutenant John Spencer Dunville who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for exceptional valour.
T
he day was marked with a short commemorative service at the family grave in the old Priory cemetery in Holywood, attended by members of the Blues and Royals Association . Several members of the family were present, including Christopher Dunville, the great-grandson of John’s older brother Bobby, and Kirsten Young, a descendant of his younger brother William Gustavus Dunville. Miles Holroyd whose ancestor left Northern Ireland in the late 18th century, when the family surname was still Dumville, and who has created an excellent website about the fascinating family, also came. A cutting of the box shrub which was planted at John’s grave at Villers Faucon in France is growing beside the Priory family grave This ceremony was followed by a special memorial service in the parish church of St Philip and St James at which the replica stone commemorating the award of the Victoria Cross was dedicated. The service was conducted by the Vicar, Rev Gareth Harron, with the address given by the Forces Deputy Assistant Chaplain General. Separately, last month Holywood Shared Town published a free Community Guide to Redburn Country Park. Compiled by Robin Masefield, with input from many residents, it is in two parts. The first sets out what a visitor to the

Country Park can see all year round. The second part is a summary of the history of the Dunville family and their association with Redburn House. It is illustrated with a number of historical photographs. The Guide contains two easy to follow diagrams, one an illustrated map of the Country Park, the other a sketch of the layout of the original House together with various outbuildings including the Stable Yard which is now home to Holywood Men’s Shed. On the back
cover is a charming painting by Holywood artist Tom Kerr of a scene in the Country Park. Copies of the Community Guide can be obtained from Holywood library, Redburn Community Centre and various other locations in the town. On the last weekend in June, a highly successful forest school for young people (and their families) was held in the grounds of the former Redburn House. Holywood Men’s Shed also plan to organise a foraging day in the Park later this summer.

HOLYWOOD’S AMBER AIMS HIGH WITH ANIMATION L-R Ian Sayers, Giant Training, Rachel Green, Amber Beckinsale, Georgia Graham and Madeline Graham, Into Film.
Amber Beckinsale from Holywood, a year 10 pupil at Ashfield Girl’s High School who is about to embark on GCSE Moving Image Arts, participated in a unique animation masterclass today (Tuesday 14th June) in conjunction with IntoFilm. Ian Sayers from Giant Training led Amber and her classmates through a series of animations whilst at the same time providing them with a wealth of information on how to get ahead in the animation industry. Ian shared a number of film success stories of animators from Northern Ireland which thoroughly inspired the students as they begin their journey along the filmmaking route. Moving Image Arts was introduced into Ashfield Girls’ only 2 years ago and has already inspired a large number of girls to follow the filmmaking route with some students currently involved in the British Film Industry Academy and others having successfully gained places on the BFI Craft Skills Residential in London.
Pupils from Ashfield Girls’ High School, East Belfast, received some red carpet treatment this week (Wednesday 14th June) when their short film, “Fowl Feeders” premiered at the Strand Arts Centre. The film was the result of a seven month afterschool film making project in conjunction with Into Film, the ‘See It, Make It’ initiative and under the professional guidance of director and filmmaker, Matt Curry. Head of Media, Tracy Rossborough said, “This was a fantastic opportunity for the girls who dedicated their time to commit to this project. They met each Friday after school, supported by classroom assistants, to plan, script, storyboard, act in, film and edit to produce their engaging and humorous short film. It gave them the opportunity to work collaboratively across year groups, to share, discuss and compromise on ideas, before agreeing on their final idea. It has provided them with a range of practical skills which will benefit them in the future.”

WORLD FAMOUS ARTIST “INSPIRED” BY ROCKPORT PUPILS’ ARTWORK Colin Davidson recently joined Rockport School pupils as host of an exhibition of their fantastic GCSE artwork.
R
ockport School proudly hosted an exhibition of their GSCE & A Level pupils’ artwork (Thursday 8th June) and enjoyed a captivating account of a career to date, from guest and esteemed artist Colin Davidson. This exhibition was the pinnacle of a year-long arts programme; ‘Stretching the Canvas’ delivered by Visual Artists Ireland and generously brought to Rockport School by Standard Utilities. The evening was a great success with Colin meeting the pupils, discussing techniques and sharing intimate details of his most famous sittings, notably Her Majesty the
Queen and most recently Ed Sheeran. Colin said of the evening, “This programme is great for aspiring Artists. Rockport’s exhibited pieces to me have been inspiring, it’s very clear that the standard of the Arts Faculty and indeed Rockport School is of the very highest.” The programme aimed to give young people opportunities beyond teaching within the classroom and having their work critiqued by Colin, a world famous artist is something they will learn from and take forward into their careers. Paul Lutton, Head of Arts at Rockport School, said, “Stretching the Canvas is about inspiring and
empowering young students with a talent for art, by introducing them directly to those who are making a successful career in the visual arts field. Through this year-long programme, our students will not only broaden their awareness of contemporary visual art but also enhance their verbal, written, decision making and research skills. Young people facing school subject choices and careers decisions desperately need realworld inspiration, role modelling and support in every field, and none more so than in the arts. This programme represents an incredible opportunity for our pupils.”

HOLYWOOD’S KERRY NEVINS SCOOPS INNOVATION OF THE YEAR Babocush has been awarded The Innovation of the Year at the 2017 Aer Lingus Viscount Awards
he awards, which took place in the exquisite surroundings of the Institute of Directors’ headquarters in London, and in association with Ulster Business, have become one of the most respected events on the Northern Ireland business calendar. An idea developed by Holywood based Kerry Nevins, in a bid to combat severe colic and reflux in her infant son, Babocush took 14 years to come to market. Upon launching in November 2015, the product enjoyed significant success internationally, as well as an 1895% increase in sales revenue. Reflecting on her win Kerry commented: ‘When we launched less than 2 years ago I would never have believed I would be receiving an award such as this. It took a long time to bring the product to market and when we did we had nothing in the way of a marketing budget. I engaged with the first few parents and asked
them to post images or videos on our facebook of the product in use. This raw approach really connected with people and it quickly became viral, leading to the product selling out worldwide.’ Andrea Hunter, Business Development Manager of Aer Lingus in Northern Ireland said: “We were hugely impressed again by the calibre of this year’s entrants and while only seven companies left as Aer Lingus Viscount Award winners, the judges agreed that the immense talent and success of the companies present in the room was outstanding.’ ‘Aer Lingus is proud to connect businesses with opportunities internationally every day via our Belfast City to Heathrow route and via Dublin Airport to our transatlantic destinations in the US, including our brand new route to Miami, which starts flying on 1st September 2017.’

Helen’s Bay Woman Graduates as Blue Badge Tourist Guide
Helen’s Bay woman Jackie Gillespie has earned the coveted Blue Badge, acknowledged as the ultimate accolade for professional tourist guides.
J
ackie who was one of just thirty-three people from across Northern Ireland who earned the right to wear the insignia, graduating at a formal ceremony in Belfast’s historic Harbour Office this week. The Blue Badge is awarded on the successful completion of intensive training a followed by a series of comprehensive written and practical exams. Blue Badge guides are expected to have at their fingertips an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of history, politics, geology, geography, heritage, arts and culture, and much more besides. They must be capable of guiding visitors confidently, eloquently and in entertaining fashion, around the region’s tourist attractions and landmarks; from Derry’s Walls to Titanic Quarter; from Fermanagh’s Lakes to the Causeway Coast. Northern Ireland’s first Blue Badge guides qualified in 1992, graduating from a demanding course which was delivered by Queen’s University Belfast and accredited by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. The Northern Ireland Tourist Guide Association was established in that same year and has acted ever since as the professional body for Tourist Guides in Northern Ireland. NITGA Chairperson Cathie McKimm was an original graduate of the class of 1992 and a founding member of the Association. Welcoming the new

Blue Badge Guides into the highest rank of their profession she said, “When we originally qualified the first ceasefires were still two years off and no one, but no one, would ever have believed that we would have a tourism industry such as we have today, or that amongst our visitor assets we would include Titanic Belfast which was acclaimed by World Travel Awards as ‘the Best Tourist Attraction In The World 2016’. That was all the stuff of fairy tales, but sometimes fairy tales come true.” “This year marks our silver anniversary year and what better way to celebrate twenty-five years than with the graduation of thirtythree new Blue Badge Guides? This was the first time that the NITGA has delivered the course and, according to the Institute of Tourist Guiding which is responsible for
course accreditation nationwide, our results were amongst the best in the UK.” Adding her congratulations to the Class Of 2017, Brin Heaton, Course Director and Secretary of the Northern Ireland Tourist Guide Association, said, “The road to Blue Badge status is far from easy, as our students know all too well. Over one intensive year they have visited almost every corner of Northern Ireland to build, then test, their knowledge as they worked towards gaining this internationally recognised qualification for professional tourist guides yet their enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge never faltered. These really are exceptional people and we are confident that they will each play an exceptional role in Northern Ireland’s fast-growing tourism industry.”

ou may remember your grandparents house top to toe in it! Today though, dark wood furniture deserves a rethink. There is such a wonderful array of woods - teak, rosewood, walnut, mahogany and dark stained oak, which can bring welcome warmth to a room. With some creative styling and accessorising, dark wood furniture can slot handsomely into most schemes from modern to eclectic. And this year with the interior schemes looking towards deeper colours such as navy blues and mossy greens on walls; dark wood pieces and antiques will shine brighter than ever as they look amazing beside these colours, particularly those with brass details.
