ith the support of George Best Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund, Holywoodbased charity Friends of Asha has developed a professional Toolkit for secondary schools across Northern Ireland which provides important volunteering information as well as an account of past volunteers’ experiences. The charity, which is a support group for the work of Asha in Delhi, India, has five existing partnerships with schools in

Northern Ireland. Supported by the Community Fund, which to date has provided funding of approximately £250,000 to a number of local community projects, Friends of Asha hopes the Toolkit will inspire other schools to sign up to the volunteer programme and establish their own link with Delhi. The Toolkit introduces many of Northern Ireland’s teenagers to the challenges of third world poverty and contributes greatly to their own self-development.

TRANSPORT TRANSPORT MUSEUM TO WELCOME MUSEUM TO LARGEST GATHERING OF PRE-WAR WELCOME LARGEST GATHERING OF PRECULTRA HILLCLIMB MGS TO 2016 WAR MGS TO 2016 CULTRA HILLCLIMB

The Ulster Folk & Transport Museum is continuing to keep Northern Ireland’s roaring history of motorsport alive by welcoming one of the largest gatherings in Ulster of pre war MGs to the open-air site for the 2016 Cultra Hillclimb.

T

he event, which uniquely combines the competitive element of a Hillclimb alongside the heritage of Irish motors and motorsport, returns to Cultra Manor on Saturday 11 June, and welcomes the MG Car Club Triple-M Tour celebrating prewar MG Midgets, Magnas and Magnettes (hence Triple-M). The Tour will see over 50 MGs touring Ulster and taking the opportunity to visit some of the scenes of MG‘s successes here in the 1930s where they made their mark as one of the most successful British racing marques. As part of the Tour, the cars will also drive the Ards TT circuit, commemorating the three times MG won the race in the ‘30s. Amongst the actual TT cars participating in the Tour will be Goldie Gardner’s C Type (1931), Luis Fontes’s J4 (1933) and Aubrey Ashton-Rigby’s L2 (1934), WWW

and all three of these cars will be at the Cultra Hillclimb in June. The Transport Museum will also be unveiling their recently restored Berkeley sports car which will be on display during the event alongside the touring MGs. Organised in association with the Thoroughbred Sports Car Club NI (TSCCNI), and supported by the Ards & North Down Borough Council, the Cultra Hillclimb will welcome 100 competitors, who will race in cars that span across the past 100 years. As well as the competition, there will be three parade runs throughout the day and a Sprite/Midget shoot-out to close the competition. Mark Kennedy, Road Transport Curator at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum said; “MGs represent a fascinating piece of motoring history, and we’re delighted to welcome the MG

Car Club’s Triple-M Tour to the Cultra Hillclimb for the 2016 event.There will be cars coming from as far away as Australia for the Tour, however one local stand out MG that will be on display at Cultra is the 1933 L2 Magna that was owned and raced by Lloyd Cowdy and his sister Hilda from Banbridge in the 1930s, and subsequently owned and rallied by Ronnie Adams (of Monte Carlo Rally winning fame) from Lisburn.” Also on the day the Museum’s Costumed Visitor Guides will be bringing a taste of the Folk Museum to the Manor with traditional activities for guests to enjoy, while Ards’ Arts Collective and Bangor-based artist group BOOM will be in residence alongside Titanic fashion designs from Jill Edgar Designs and Andrew Cooke’s sculptures of historic racing helmets.

Saturday 11 June 10am-5pm. Major event day pricing applies. Organisers advise advanced booking. Tickets include full access to both Folk & Transport Museum sites.www.nmni.com/uftm.

VOLUNTEER Inspirational, uplifting, frank and funny experiences

Sheila the Wreck

HOLYWOOD RESIDENT LAUNCHES NEW BOOK ‘DARINGLY DISALBED’ THE STORY OF A VERY SPECIAL VOLUNTEER

S

Bangor and North Down branch of Samaritans recently hosted the launch of a book written by one of its volunteers, Sheila Taylor - Daringly Disabled – The adventures of Sheila the Wreck.

heila has been a Samaritan Volunteer in Bangor North Down for 18 years. In 1996 Sheila suffered horrendous injuries in a car crash, and spent almost a year in hospital. Once she got out of hospital Sheila was determined to make the most of life, regardless of her disabilities, and her book is her story of all of her adventures and exploits since that time. Samaritans hope that Sheila’s story will give hope and inspiration to many who may themselves have suffered a similar life changing event and who wonder how they are going to go on. Deirdre Walsh Director of Bangor and North Down Samaritans said: “Sheila’s book is a joy to read. It is inspirational, uplifting, frank and funny and her exploits, travels and experiences, read like a 20 year old’s bucket list. She opted to ride an elephant when her companions preferred to shop; she swam with dolphins; has gone snorkelling, off road driving and water skiing, and she joined the crew of the Lord Nelson ship when she climbed to the Crow’s Nest and became the Captain’s mate. I am very grateful to Sheila for donating the proceeds of her book to our branch. Someone contacts Samaritans every six seconds. We are available round the clock, every single day of the year to provide a safe place to talk for anyone struggling to cope, whoever they are, however they feel and whatever life has done to them. The proceeds

TEL

from Sheila’s book will help us to continue supporting those who need us.” Sheila said, “I am disabled and my aim is to encourage anyone else who might be less able, to try to forget what they cannot do, and make full use of what they can do. There is so much out there for all of us. Working with Samaritans was a real eye opener to me. Whatever my problems are, I’m able to put them aside when I am on duty in Samaritans. It is good to feel you are there to support someone is struggling and who needs to be genuinely listened to. It puts my own problems into perspective.”

SA M A R I TA NS Last year Samaritans responded to more than 5.3 million calls for help from people struggling to cope, with nearly 200,000 contacts to the charity over the festive season alone. Samaritans relies almost entirely on donations to run its 201 branches and train its 21,000 volunteers, who also provide emotional support in schools, workplaces, prisons and throughout their local communities. If you would like to support Samaritans by making a donation, find out how you can help at: www.Samaritans.Org/christmas

You can purchase Sheila’s book at Clandy Newsagents, Clandeboye Road, Bangor. To find out more about Samaritans in Bangor and North Down please call 028 9147 7826.

/// Panzanella Serves 4

“This is my favourite salad, it is one of the rare times I would eat bread. The bread really absorbs the dressing and the flavours from the peppers and tomatoes. Tomatoes and onions are so tasty, fresh and healthy. The two contain lots of vitamin C, beta-carotene and liver strengthening nutrients. The olive oil is great for your skin, heart, memory, joints and helps keep you young, all that and it tastes brilliant too.”

275g / 10 slices day-old Italian bread eg ciabatta, thickly sliced 1 medium cucumber, peeled and cut into chunks 5 tomatoes, peeled, deseeded and diced 1 large red onion, finely sliced 1 red pepper, skin removed, thinly sliced 1 yellow pepper, skin removed then sliced 225g good quality olives 20 basil leaves, torn Dressing 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon red or white wine vinegar

Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 cloves of garlic crushed • Slice bread and soak in cold water for about 2 minutes. • Remove and gently squeeze water out with your hands, then remove excess with a clean tea towel. • Put bread into fridge for 1 hour. • Heat grill to really hot and roast both peppers cut in half, skin side up until skin blackens, remove to a plastic bag and when cool peel off the skin, collect any juice they shed. • Cut a small cross on top of the tomatoes, plunge into a jug of boiling water for 20 seconds, remove, and cool and peel skin off. • Cut tomatoes in half hold over a sieve and bowl, scrap out seeds in sieve. • Half cucumber and scoup out seeds. • In a pretty bowl mix together the cucumber, tomatoes, onion, peppers and olives. • Tear bread into chunks and add to the bowl with the basil leaves. • Let stand for half an hour. • Put oil, vinegar, garlic,

and juices from tomato and peppers, salt and pepper into a screw top jar. Shake well to combine. • Pour over the dressing and toss thoroughly. Serve immediately.

/// Sweetcorn Fritters Serves 2-4

“These are lovely so will serve four only if one fritter is enough! Sweetcorn is amazingly high in fibre and beta carotene. ”

3 tablespoons oil 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 teaspoon ground coriander 325g tin of sweetcorn 6 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced 1 medium egg, lightly beaten salt and pepper 1 teaspoon baking powder sweet chilli sauce from a bottle • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan, add onion and cook gently for about 8 minutes until softened.

/// Sweetcorn Fritters

/// Falafel & Tzatziki

/// Panzanella

• Add coriander, garlic and chilli and cook for a minute stirring to prevent sticking. • Remove from heat • Drain sweet corn and tip into a mixing bowl, mash lightly with potato masher to break down a little. • Add onion mix to bowl with the spring onions and the beaten egg. • Add salt and freshly ground black pepper and sir really well to combine. • Sift the flour and baking powder over mixture and stir in. • Heat another bit of oil in a large frying pan. • Drop 4-5 heaped teaspoons of sweet corn mix into the pan. • With a spatula flatten each to make a 1cm / ½in thick fritter. • Fry for 3 minutes until golden, turn over and fry for another 3 minutes until cooked and crisp. • Remove fritters to plate and drain on kitchen paper. • Keep warm, fry remaining fritters. • Serve immediately with sweet

chilli sauce or other chutney of your choice.

/// Falafel & Tzatziki Serves 6

“This is a lovely light lunch that is easy to prepare especially if you have a food processor. You can make the falafels earlier and leave in the fridge as this helps them to firm up better and not fall apart when you fry them. Rolling the falafels in sesame seeds increases the calcium content, sesame is one of the richest sources of calcium, as well as giving them a crunchy coating. Increase the vitamin content and add interest by putting some salad leaves and grated vegetables into the pitta bread along with the falafels. As a unit this dish contains quality protein from the chickpeas and yoghurt and is also high in fibre.”

2 x 410g tins chickpeas, drained 1 teaspoon cumin 1 onion grated 3 cloves garlic crushed

25g / 1oz fresh coriander leaves ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda 50g / 2oz plain flour 1 large egg beaten 6 tablespoons sesame seeds 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil Packet of wholemeal pitta bread For the tzatziki ½ cucumber, peeled and grated 200g fat-free Greek yoghurt 2 cloves garlic, crushed juice of ½ lemon • In a food processor gradually blend chickpeas, cumin, onion, garlic, coriander, bicarbonate of soda, flour, egg and lots of salt and pepper. • Keep some texture in the mix. • Place sesame seeds on a plate. • Shape falafel into small balls, flatten, roll in the seeds. Chill. • Mix cucumber with yoghurt, garlic and lemon juice. • Heat the oil in a pan, fry falafels until golden both sides. • Serve falafels with the tzatziki in warm pitta bread.

Ashling Gray Solicitor @ Hunt Solicitors

M

any people will already be familiar with the tax systems HMRC have in place to calculate income tax from employment earnings. An employee’s income tax is deducted through the PAYE system which automatically deducts the tax due based on your earnings. Whereas people who are self-employed or have other earnings, such as rental income or savings income, normally must submit a self-assessment form directly to HMRC. In previous tax years interest accrued on savings income (your money in the bank) was ‘taxed at source’ meaning the bank automatically deducted the relevant percentage of tax due and sent it directly to HMRC. The 2016/2017 tax year introduced a new allowance for the first £1,000.00 of savings income (£500.00 for higher rate tax payers) which means that no income tax would be payable on the first £1,000.00 of income generated on savings income. Income from savings interest is now paid to you ‘gross’ which simply means that no tax has been deducted at source and instead you as the tax payer must declare this to HMRC if required. Before any Income Tax is deducted your combined earnings from all sources must be over the relevant annual allowance for that particular tax year (2016/2017 = £11,000.00) all income generated over this

BE PREPARED Your local solicitor on the facts and figures of income tax

Tax Affairs

Income Tax on Death W h at yo u s h ou ld know allowance is then taxed at the appropriate rate. When someone dies HMRC allows the deceased’s personal representatives to apply the full annual allowance towards the income tax for the tax year when death occurred. This means that if during that tax year income tax was deducted on the assumption they would live for the full tax year and they have overpaid income tax this can be reclaimed by the personal representatives and becomes an asset of their Estate. Of course this can also lead to an underpayment of income tax and this will have to be met by the assets of the Estate. HMRC will normally make contact with the personal representatives shortly after a person’s death to ask who is now dealing with the tax affairs of the deceased. From the date of death and throughout the administration period there is no annual allowance available for any income generated by the assets in the Estate. So, for example, if a property was owned by the deceased and rented throughout their life time to generate income and following their death the personal representatives continue to rent the property and generate income this is automatically liable to pay income tax at the ‘Estate Rate’ of 20% or 10% depending on the source of income. There is no minimum level of

income generated by the Estate that would allow a personal representative to avoid having to declare the income to the Revenue. Some income may still be taxed at source which means the personal representatives can rely on the confirmation given that the income tax has been deducted. However with the introduction of the new savings allowance banks are no longer deducting income tax from interest accrued so it is more likely in future the personal representatives of an Estate will need to file self-assessment forms to the Revenue. As the tax affairs of an Estate are the responsibility of the personal representatives it is key to the proper administration of an Estate that the income tax affairs are correctly managed. If a liability goes undeclared to the Revenue they can investigate the matter and seek payment from the personal representatives. This can lead to interest and penalties being applied to the original liability, having to reclaim funds already paid out to beneficiaries or the personal representatives having to settle the liability personally. At Hunt Solicitors we understand that following the death of a loved one their tax affairs are not at the forefront of your mind and we can offer expert help on all aspects of the administration process including the tax affairs of the deceased.

If you have any queries following the death of a loved one or if you have found yourself appointed the Executor of an Estate and require advice contact our office on 028 90 428 600.

EXPERTISE Local school triumph at Young Enterprise Awards

Winning Combination

CAMPBELL COLLEGE WIN RETAIL EXCELLENCE AWARD AT NI FINALS

T

he elite of Northern Ireland’s young entrepreneurs celebrated at the Awards to recognise the hard work and dedication from students who completed the Company Programme this year. Lauren Coleman from Belfast Model School for Girls, and Magician Rodd Hogg provided entertainment on the night, while young Enterprise Alumnus Reuben McFeeters provided an insight into how he started his business. The Company Programme gives young people the chance to run their own business over the academic year with guidance from a business volunteer, sell their products at trade fairs and compete with other schools. Another award went to the Belfast Area on the night, with John Toal, from Everton Day Centre’s Company Crafted Hands, crowned joint winner of the Young Entrepreneur award, beating off the competition from 6 other regional finalists.

Aroma Candle Co. from Campbell College took home the Asda Retail Excellence Award at the Young Enterprise Awards at Belfast City Hall on Thursday night. The award recognises the company that delivered high standards of retail, and provided a positive and engaging customer service.

Campbell College with Host Pete Snodden and Carol Fitzsimons, Chief Executive Young Enterprise NI

Local charity Young Enterprise, with support from Ulster University Business School and EY, staged its annual awards ceremony where the top businesses and individuals from across Northern Ireland were crowned. Aroma Candle Co. from Campbell College was one of 6 finalists, out of almost 100 companies, in the running to become the Best Overall Company. They have developed a range of luxury handcrafted, ethically produced scented candles and candlemaking kits. The process involved a daunting pitch and interview at Invest NI Headquarters in Belfast facing a panel of some of Northern Ireland’s top business moguls including David Elliot, Editor at Ulster Business, and Gerry McGinn, Chairman

of the Strategic Investment Board. Congratulations to all the winners on the night, but in particular Enlighten Hope from St Patrick’s College in Dungannon who took home the award for Best Overall Company and will go on to represent Northern Ireland in the UK Finals in July. Professor Marie McHugh, Dean of Ulster University Business School, commented “Ulster University Business School is delighted to support Young Enterprise, as it aligns with our desire to shape futures and create a more entrepreneurial economy within Northern Ireland. Working alongside Young Enterprise Northern Ireland is an ideal way to prepare our young people for the world of business.”

The Young Enterprise Company Programme runs every year in schools across NI, allowing students to develop their entrepreneurial skills whilst connecting with local businesses. www.yeni.co.uk

The Green Machine

MASSAGE Alison Stevenson aka Geborgenheit Massage tells it like it is

Where The Wild Stings Are STINGING NETTLES & NURSERY NURSES Stealthily appearing everywhere, luscious and bursting with green goodness, I thought I’d write about the many, wondrous virtues of nettles both in the diet and sting-free-dried in a herbal stamp massage...but photos of tattoos came through and caught my attention.

A

small group of girls in their early 20’s have organised a couple of massage evenings at home, hopping on the table like gazelles, experimenting with leafy salads and grains for supper, gracefully sipping on low-alcohol drinks of delicate hues, aware of the beautiful and tangible notion that taking care of oneself is both inside AND out. Most of them are also familiar with the wily ways of the gym. Gorgeous creatures they are, easily as inspiringly fresh as a bunch of nettles :) They explain what they’d like from the massage, choose an essential oil and enthuse about the herbs in the stamps, they believe me when I say that coconut oil is skin-food, talk about the next holidays and concerts in their diaries. Such gentleness and warmth in the massage room, such raucous laughter in the kitchen afterwards. WWW

I n k s p i ra t i o n

I’m 200 years old beside them, Grandma Moses. I’m taken by their tattoos of which there are an abundance. I feel I have permission to read and comment on the phrases and images they’ve chosen. I admire them and mean it. They’re completely happy to send me pictures for an article. Genuine trust and sincerity. How did they get to be so wise so young, I ask. They think this is dead funny, they see themselves as neither. They’re more interested in the new boyfriend and the approaching summer in America. And truly, these topics ARE more interesting than my melancholic pondering. These are young ladies who work hard at various nursery schools, lifting and carrying babies and small children, sorting out small wars and soothing the wounded. Total packages. It’s the WORDS that spring to

mind when working with them that encourage me to write about them...to use the experience to illustrate that the joys and rewards of massage are for the giver as well as for the receiver. I felt energised and bubbling over after a full evening’s work here, nobody was offended when I reclined on the sofa afterwards to text and whatsapp (a thing most extreme adults disapprove of!). I think this then is the message, that best-intentioned Touch is the stuff of life, renews and revives and restores...and all this beside ALL the other benefits. Who could refuse? Where broccoli and spinach appear in any recipe, nettles of meadow and field may be substituted. Full of vitamins and minerals, good for the blood, the liver, the bladder, the prostate. Also excellent chopped into salads and hot, boiled potatoes. Don’t hold the salt or olive oil.

Baroque & Roll

DESIGN LEGACY Jill O’Neill is back & this month it’s all about luxurious, excessive swirls!

Neill Jill O’ nd ReFou JILL O’NEILL FROM REFOUND EXPERIMENTING WITH LOOKS THAT MARRY BAROQUE LUXURY WITH THE VINTAGE INDUSTRIAL STYLE

L

uxurious fabrics, metallics, excessive ornamentation and swirling florals: the Baroque period’s legacy continues to influence design throughout the ages, from fashion to furniture to architecture. The Baroque style reflects a love of over-the-top decoration, lavishness and little regard for functionality – it’s design as pure theatre. It’s heyday was in the royal courts of 17th century Europe where the more luxurious and grandiose your décor, the better. Today however, the look is more subdued with rich, deep colours set against a lighter backdrop and choosing well-considered items to really shine and show off. All this indulgence and excess might seem the complete antithesis to the rugged and rusty look of today’s industrial zeitgeist. Yet the two looks bring drama in completely different ways, creating a pleasing contradiction between rusty and royal, factory and finery. Try combining faded velvets and mottled glass surfaces with distressed painted textures, concrete and harsh metallic shapes – the more decay and distress the better. For colour palette, think black, gold, pewter, rich purples, red and peacock blues (aged, faded versions of these are perfect). Contrast geometric imagery with chandelier lighting and aged gilded frames for a look that is reminiscent of both the lavish legacy of lost centuries and the paired back modernity of the factory age. If you are more industrial lover than baroque dramatist; even a nod to the latter in the form of a chandelier, gilded mirror or ornamental table leg within a purely industrial style room can provide a subtle but striking counterbalance…Woven rugs, oversized furniture and ornately carved pieces mixed with salvaged wood pieces and metallic touches and you have yourself a perfectly modern Baroque-Industrial styled room! for the rest of the year. If you’re thinking about this cut you should ask your stylist for short hair around the perimeter of the face with the option of having varying lengths throughout the top, around the ears, and at the nape. To wear it modernised, keep the same overall length framing the face. Styling it, use a bit of gel to comb it into the desired direction to create a wet, sleek look, or it can be tousled with your hands and a blow dryer into your desired shape.

THE BOB is a classic haircut that never seems to go out of fashion, you

only have to look at the A-listers like Taylor swift who are wearing the style at the minute. It’s also a hairstyle that looks good all year round. You can crop it short for a 1920s style, or grow it shoulder-length for the fashionable lob look, the bob is versatile you can style it tousled or straight, wear it in a side or centre parting or with a fringe.

A C U T that is tapered at the bottom, with more weight at the top. The final shape should resemble a heart or diamond. Since this look is all about bouncy, healthy curls, hydration is key.

AFRO HA IR and its natural texture was fully highlighted on the Spring/Summer 2016 fashion weeks. You can wear it tied up in a chignon (like beyonce), long with full volume or cropped short, the catwalks displayed Afro hair with an emphasis on natural texture and curl. The Afro curl looks will be popular in 2016.

<<L AY E RS are stunning on mid to longer hair, they remove just the right amount of weight to give the hair movement, without making the ends look over-layered and untidy. The most flattering of layers begins right below the jawline. Layers look amazing on all face shapes and depending on how they are styled, they can flatter some face shapes more than others. Removing the weight from your hair by using layers can knock some time off of your blow dry. LONG E R L AYE R S /// SALON: 26 Sandown Rd,Belfast, BT5 6GY.
