Further details of the Festival and how to enter visit holywoodmusicfestival.com
HOLYWOOD MUSIC FESTIVAL UNVEIL SPECIAL NEW CUP
Holywood Music Festival is delighted to report that it has been given a magnificent new cup that bears the name of one of Holywood’s bestknown and much-loved residents, who was also a keen supporter of the Festival, the artist Rowel Friers.
T
hanking Rowel’s widow Yvonne for her gift when she handed the cup over, the chairman of the Holywood Music Festival Committee, John Young, noted that there was another, much less well-known, connection between Rowel and the Festival, stemming from the time when he very kindly agreed to design the handsome medals that continue to be awarded every year. The cup will go to the entrant to whom the independent adjudicator gives the highest marks in the advanced piano section of this year’s Festival, which begins on 17 November and continues until 26 November. John Young added : ‘Competition for this
cup is likely to be very keen and, because those who enter the advanced piano class are already very skilled performers, the music they provide will be of very high quality.’ If there are any young or notso-young pianists who read about this cup and are tempted to enter, they should note that the closing date for entries is 17 October. Further details can be found on the Music Festival’s website at www. holywoodmusicfestival.com Referring to the very high quality of the performances expected in the competition for this cup, John Young mentioned that anyone living in or beyond the Holywood area who
was interested in listening to excellent music making would be very welcome indeed to attend on the evening when the competition takes place. And anyone living in the Holywood area or beyond who would like to hear some great piano playing, find out the adjudicator’s opinions and discover the identity of the winner The Festival itself runs from 17 to 26 November and all sessions are open to members of the local community who have an interest in music. We want everyone to feel welcome to join us in celebrating the huge range musical talent that will on the stage of the Queen’s Hall.

CARSON MCDOWELL LEADS LAWYERS IN LOCAL SCHOOLS PILOT [ #22 -PRIORY INTEGRATED COLLEGE / RAISING THE BAR ]
Jacqueline McAleese, programme volunteer and partner at Carson McDowell; Dr Anne Rice, Northern Ireland coordinator for the Citizenship Foundation and Jacqueline Magennis, principal of Priory Integrated College.
Carson McDowell has become the first law firm to deliver the Lawyers in Schools programme to young people in Northern Ireland with Priory Integrated College taking part in the scheme.

he partnership with the Citizenship Foundation, funded by the Legal Education Foundation, will see nine solicitors from the firm volunteer their time to help young people learn about their rights and responsibilities across a number of areas including: social media, employment law, intellectual property and police powers. The series of 12 sessions will run from September until December. Last year over 1,200 students in the UK and Australia were involved in the Lawyers in School programme, receiving mentoring from 500 legal volunteers. As specialists in Northern Irish legislation, Carson McDowell volunteered it’s time and expertise to adapt the programme to the jurisdiction and is supporting the pilot delivery at Priory Integrated College in Holywood, County Down. Michael Johnston, Managing Partner at
Carson McDowell commented: “Volunteering and the legal profession go hand in hand. This initiative is the perfect example of how solicitors should be engaging with young people and encouraging them to discuss current affairs and learn about their rights. Our solicitors also benefit from the programme, developing their own skills and progressing their professional development. Our aim is to get young people interested in the law and to encourage the next generation of legal professionals.” Dr Anne Rice, Northern Ireland coordinator for the Citizenship Foundation commented “Bringing this Lawyers in Schools pilot to Priory Integrated College is a positive step forward for Northern Ireland. Carson McDowell’s support in the delivery of the programme is an essential part of our aim to promote citizenship among young people.”

Its our annual visit up the hill to The Galbraith family who have been farming at Craigavad, Holywood since 1935.
Initially a dairy farm, their focus now is to grow a number of free range bronze turkeys for the Christmas trade. They have chosen to grow the multi award winning Kelly bronze turkeys which are slowly matured over a 22 week period to provide a succulent bird of high quality flavour and texture. Plus there are some new guests this year too with some piglets on the farm. The turkeys are fed a wholesome cereal based diet including locally grown oats and wheat, without any antibiotics or growth promoters. They are full of flavour as they are slowly grown and have
the best of living conditions, enjoying open pasture by day and the shelter of a deep straw filled barn by night. “Traditional processing is carried out on the farm,” says Jeremy, “thus reducing the stress of transport and starts mid December. Once the birds have been hand plucked, they are hung for a minimum of 10 days. This helps to tenderise the meat and develop its full flavour.” In the final dressing of the bird the leg sinews are removed. Turkey crowns can be provided on request. Jeremy continues, “We also have available this year crowns along
with boneless turkey roasts too. Also we have the full range of vegetables and potatoes, all again from a local farm.” Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a traditional turkey dinner so why not treat your family and friends to a bronze Craigavad turkey? Whether you are catering for a large or small group of people, they offer a range of different sized birds to suit all parties. Christmas is a very busy time of year and so to allow you to make the most of your festive season, you can collect when suits you or the family will deliver your turkey at a time convenient for you!

iam McCusker (HFT’s Youth Development Officer) explained “ The group are involved in a 1 Year Global Youth Work & Leadership programme aiming to develop them as young leaders in the world around them. One aspect of this programme was partnering with an international project to take action in helping others, building relationships across cultures, developing understanding of others and challenging themselves”. We were based in the south of India and split our time across Hyderabad & Vijawada. In partnership with the charity Frontline they worked with a local organisation, United Christian Church of India (UCCI). Part of UCCI’s work involves

HOLYWOOD FAMILY TRUST 108 High Street Holywood BT18 9HWT: 028 9042 7842 E: holywoodft@btconnect.com running residential schools in the Indian state of Andra Pradesh. They educate and care for almost 2,000 children and young people from some of the State’s poorest communities. “From the moment we stepped off the plane all our senses were alert to this different culture from the heat, smells, sights, and sounds! The young people were involved in delivering activities and teaching English with over 300 individual students in 4 different schools. We were honoured to spend time with these children who welcomed us with open arms and big smiles! As much as the group gave, we received so much back from the kids who taught us a lot about crossing cultures and learning from each other”
said Rose Wade (HFT’s Youth Support Worker-in -Charge). The group were challenged as they witnessed poverty up-close amidst a life full of colour, culture and smiles. We had the privilege of visiting a well which the group had raised the funds for (in Holywood on May Day 2016) and met the community who would benefit from it in person. This was a moving and eye opening experience for everyone. The group are still processing their time away and face the challenge of bringing their learning home to make a difference through tackling an issue they identify in their local area. The group will complete the programme in November 2016, hoping to achieve OCN Level 2 qualification.

Fan Of The Cloth [ UPHOLSTERY / NICOLAPARKES.CO.UK ]
Upholsterer Nicola Parkes has just moved from London to leafy Crawfordsburn. We caught up with her to get an insight into her fantastic work and her obsession with chairs!
YOU HAVE JUST RECENTLY MOVED TO NORTHERN IRELAND, WHAT WAS THE DRIVING FACTOR BEHIND THE MOVE?
I met my Irish husband 15 years ago and we now have two children. We’ve always had itchy feet to move away from the hustle and bustle. A few years back we started to chat about ‘what if’, and ‘what if’, became, let’s do it. We fell in love with a property in Crawfordsburn, aided by a girlfriend who was determined to get us over here. WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN UPHOLSTERY? At school two of the subjects I loved most were woodwork and needlework. I’ve owned a sewing machine since I was 11 and have made many things throughout my life. I had just had my first child and was dreading going back to work in an office, when my husband read an article in one of the Sunday magazines about an upholsterer and upcycler, he thought it would be the perfect choice for me - he was probably keen for me to stop experimenting round the house!
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS HAVE YOU EARNED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
I spent one week every month away
from home for 18 months, juggling child care to gain my qualification in Traditional Upholstery, The Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers. I was also extremely lucky to train under excellent upholsterers. I worked parttime for one year for one business, then moved to a great traditional upholstery workshop where I trained for a further 18 months. WHAT KIND OF UPHOLSTERY WORK DO YOU SPECIALISE IN? I specialise in traditional upholstery. I love working with hair and stitching the shape in, this takes time and patience. I love the look of hessian and twine, it’s almost a shame to cover up the work. Even though I am traditionally trained, the course and apprenticeships teach you how to work with modern upholstery too, this is a necessity these days, and I now have a real passion for retro chairs, which aren’t traditional - the brighter the fabric the better!
WHAT IS IT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE BUSINESS?
I’m obsessed with chairs! The different styles, seeing how they have been put together, you are always learning, you may think you
have seen everything then you strip another chair down and find another angle, it keeps you on your toes. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHT SO FAR?
I think I’ve been lucky as my business really grew quickly in England - now I have that challenge again in Ireland! I believe that more people want some special pieces of furniture in their homes, and are prepared to buy something which is unique. I love meeting people and working with them to achieve the finish they want. I have also loved working with up and coming fabric designers, it’s lovely to see my work appear on their websites helping to sell their fabrics. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS HARD TO TRAIN AS AN UPHOLSTERER IN NORTHERN IRELAND, ARE YOU LOOKING TO SET UP CLASSES?
I have already been approached in regards to classes, this is something I will definitely look into further down the line, currently I am keen to establish myself in Ireland as an Upholsterer, but please feel free to give me a ‘wee’ jingle - my husband will be so proud I’m picking up the local dialect!

STAY C O O L [ HOTEL D E S IG N / BY OSCAR & JOY ]
If you have visited Belfast City Centre recently you may have noticed a clutch of new hotels underway. This includes the proposed 5 star Linen hotel on Donegal Square, or the 23 storey Windsor House, recently acquired by Hastings to build the “Grand Central Hotel”...
Clockwise from top: First 2 Images W Hotel Amsterdam • W Hotel Seattle • A sample impression of a room in Bullitt Belfast
B
EB
ut it is perhaps the “Bullitt” Hotel, on the corner of Victoria and Ann Street, that has the greatest potential to shake up the industry. Focusing squarely on the millennial generation, Bullitt dispenses with the expensive and under-utilised add ons to focus on what matters most. So out go bell boys and trouser presses, and in come super-fast broadband, espresso bars and live music and events. The traditional hotel restaurant has been ditched in favour of branded venues – “Taylor & Clay” for food, “Baltic Bar” for a beer. So why does this matter? Well, Bullitt reminds me of the iconic W Hotels and their highly
innovative and achingly cool hotel philosophy. Launched in New York in 1998, W Hotels pioneered a new kind of luxury that incorporates popular culture, contemporary design, and an irreverent attitude. More a lifestyle brand than a hotel chain, W employs customer focused retail designers rather than spreadsheet focused hotel designers. It turned its lobby into a living room, and has been known to transform spaces into pop-up art galleries or retail boutiques. It is constantly asking “what’s new” and “what’s next”. As Paul James, Global Brand Leader states, “Design is core to the DNA of the W hotels brand.”
The focus; to provide a customer experience beyond the hotel. And of course in the 21st century experience sells – less than two decades since launch there are now 46 W hotels in 24 countries. If Bullitt can successfully replicate this design led philosophy, it will help deliver a great deal of innovation and excitement into the hotel market – and may have competitors revising their own offer in response. And at Oscar & Joy, whose company mission is to “bring design to life”, we welcome that as a very good thing. The Bullitt is set to open in Belfast on 15th October. Find out more at bullitthotel.com

ontemporary interiors are balancing a wonderful mix of luxury alongside some rougher, rustic but robust pieces of industrial style pieces or interior fixtures such as lighting and shelving. This ‘urban luxe’ creates a rather lovely effect of warm, homeliness but with none of the quaint and twee – more urban edgy. So this means mixing warm tones in fabrics, rugs or ceramics with the rough, rusting metals of a vintage dentist cabinet or Victorian book shelf. Or you can add a softer touch to a vintage piece with some
Ec
left over material or wallpaper. Just line the back of the cabinet or apply to the top of a unit like our example #3 above. Most commonly being used in open kitchen-living areas, it is affording those that are a little more fashion forward to create a modern look even with young families! Having some of the luxury and must-have warmth along with the stuff you just LOVE and have to have. Like a few of those industrial style items you’ve coveted on Pinterest. And - you don’t have to live in a urban area to have it!

WARMTH & WELLNESS [ O U R STAY @ T H E CU L LO D EN ]
Running a magazine in Holywood for the past four years means we have had many meetings and lunches at the delightful Culloden Estate & Spa. But this time we had the opportunity to stay and get the full Culloden experience. And its one we’ll never forget.
T
here aren’t many hotel approaches that beat the tree lined winding road that leads you to the Culloden. What a sight the magnificent building is atop the hill overlooking Belfast Lough and the County Antrim coastline. We had our day mapped out; arrive mid afternoon, get checked in, leisurely peruse the 12 acres of leafy environs and perhaps partake in a quick beverage before and spa treatment and dinner. However the gale force winds and driving rain put paid to the al fresco part of the plan, so we took some time to enjoy the inside of this majestic building. Originally built as an official Palace for the Bishops of Down, it is an impeccable piece of history with striking original features and finishes. A warm welcome awaited and we were shown to our room which had the joy of that stunning view across the Lough. The room was beautifully appointed with a four poster bed, separate living space, marble bathroom, glass enclosed showers and a deep soaking tub. What a start. We tore ourselves away from the vistas and
ET
had time for that quick drink at the bar which was buzzing beautifully in mid afternoon. Then it was time to don the robe and slippers at the Spa which offers eight treatment suites, two pre and post treatment relaxation rooms, Zest Juice Bar, lounge area and access to all the other facilities of the health club. My wife Juanita had the Warmth & Wellness Autumn Spa Experience which included a hot stone back massage, rose quartz facial with pumpkin enzyme mask and to finish; a soothing oriental scalp massage. And what an experience it was. With more knots than a fisherman’s rope, this client was a certainly going to be a challenge for the therapist but the results were incredible. The hot stone back massage features aromatherapy oils and warm volcanic stones to relieve deep muscle tension with the warmth of the stones penetrating the muscles to soothe aches, pains and ultimately rejuvenate. The natural facial peel smoothes, softens and evens skin tone. A brush cleanse, followed by an intense Enzyme Peel containing botanical extracts and Pumpkin
Enzymes deeply exfoliates and removes dead skin cells, followed by an application of soothing Rose Quartz Crystals to help cool and calm. The results? An ultra smooth, glowing complexion and a new person emerges glowing from the tranquilly lit spa area. Meanwhile I had my own little solo adventure in the beautiful pool, jacuzzi and sauna. It would be hard to leave the Zen vibe fully behind, but the robe and slippers would have been frowned upon at dinner. We made our way to the Cultra Inn for a sumptuous Carnbrooke Northern Irish salt aged ribeye steak 12oz and a glass of wine before retiring to the bar for a cocktail. Hard to believe that after a day of doing very little, such a peaceful night sleep followed. The final few hours were taken up by a couple of trips to the breakfast buffet, a walk in the still blustery but beautiful gardens and a final swim in the pool before reluctantly bidding farewell in a new state of body and soul. A good sign of a relaxing stay with all remnants of stress and strife left to swirl in the wind outside.

and enhance the features on the clients face. We also believe the hair should be healthy and beautiful, very flattering and above all make a woman feel and look amazing! So if you feel inspired, get in touch and we can work together on the look that works best for you.

October
Is Wills Month @ Hunt Solicitors Ashling Gray
Solicitor @ Hunt Solicitors
No one likes to think too hard about what would happen if they were no longer here but having a valid Will is an important instrument in ensuring that
your property passes to who you want. Throughout October Hunt Solicitors encourage everyone to take some time to consider making their first Will
or reviewing the terms of their current Will. As a little incentive we are offering all clients half price Wills on all Wills made during the month of October.
Q.What happens to my Will if I get married, enter into a Civil Partnership or get divorced?
charity which is dear to you who otherwise would be excluded without a valid Will.
A. If you have a previous Will and get married or enter into a Civil Partnership after making that Will it becomes invalid. You can however make a Will specifically stating it is in contemplation of your union and that will ensure it remains valid. A divorce affects your Will in a different way in that the Will remains valid but any reference made to your former partner is in effect deleted and all other terms remain valid.
Q. I have recently moved address should I update my Will? A. Your Will does remain valid following a change of address however if you have left a specific gift of your previous property to someone the gift will fail. Although you may not need to make any amendments to your Will we would always recommend reviewing your Wills after life events such as moving house to ensure your Will still contains all of the gifts and terms that suit your change of circumstances.
Q.I do not have any family or close friends I wish to inherit my property, should I make a Will? A. You should most certainly write a Will if you do not wish your family to inherit your property. Without a Will only your family, whether close to you or not, will inherit your Estate. This distribution is governed by the rules of Intestacy and will distribute your Estate between your next of kin in a specific manner. Without a Will you cannot prevent your family inheriting. You may wish to include a
Q. I made a Will years ago is it out of date? A. Will does not have an expiration date so regardless of when you made it the terms remain valid unless you have married or entered into a Civil Partnership since writing it. Keeping your Will up to date is as important as writing your first Will. Most people’s family life and circumstances change over time so it is important to keep a regular review of the terms to ensure they still reflect your wishes.
These are just a small sample of queries we are asked on a regular basis and we will discuss any specific queries that you may have during our consultations. All initial consultations are free and we can arrange to visit you at your home if you are unable to travel to our office.
